Open Post | Weekend, Jul. 1st – 4th (UPDATED Mon., 2:15 pm)

An early happy 4th of July to you all! Have fun & be safe this holiday weekend.

Team News | Jordan Thomas: Hopefully by now you’ve read Thursday’s Open Post, which included some context and the story behind what led to Thomas’ arrest. Since then we’ve been able to gather a few more details and wanted to pass them along to you now.

The coaching staff has gathered and reviewed the necessary information and have met with Thomas regarding the incident. TFB has been told by two sources that Thomas’ punishment will take place over the course of this summer. And so long as he complies with what is asked of him, Thomas is not expected to be suspended for a game/s this fall. – (Super K)

Team News | Caleb Kelly & Mark Jackson: Earlier this month we mentioned (here) that Abdul Adams and Mykel Jones were a couple of freshmen who had impressed folks early on after having arrived on campus. Since then Caleb Kelly’s name is one we’ve heard on a regular basis who has been standing out.

In fact, we’ve been told that Kelly is being singled out by the staff as someone they want to ensure is prepared to come in and play the SAM LB position this season if/when he would be called upon. As you know, the staff is permitted to meet for a specific amount of time over the summer, and TFB has been told that Kelly is already attending meetings with the upper classmen.

During the spring, the Sooners worked primarily in the nickel package as their base defense. The coaches feel comfortable with Will Johnson at that nickel spot, but against 11 personnel (or bigger) the Sooners want to make sure they have the option of playing a true JACK and SAM linebackers. Similar to the way they did when, at times, last season when they were able to book end the line with Devante Bond and Eric Striker.

Another player we checked on is DE/OLB, Mark Jackson. “He’s a quick learner. He asks questions and once it’s explained, he’s got it,” one source shared with TFB.

Physically Jackson is well put together, though, like most freshmen he will need this summer to continue to add good weight. But one of the most difficult things for young players to pick up early is being assignment sound in the face of offensive shifts and changing alignments. If Jackson is indeed the quick learner he was described to be, that will go a long way towards his shot for early playing time. – (Super K)

Xavier Newman: You likely saw this past week the Sooners extend an offer to 2017 OL & Texas commit, Xavier Newman. And it was no coincidence that offer came shortly before another 2017 OL, Creed Humphrey, who had been a top OU target announced his commitment to Texas A&M.

TFB also mentioned earlier this past week that OU was a legit threat to flip Newman, who has long coveted an offer from the Sooners.

To that point, TFB heard from a source on Thursday that OU fans could be on a possible ‘boom’ watch in the near future.

Should that happen the Sooners would have one final spot open for an offensive linemen in this 2017 class, which would almost assuredly be held for an OT prospect. The two most likely targets at this point presumably being Stephan Zabie (we’ll have more on him next week) and Adrian Ealy (who we’ve mentioned a couple times on the site dating back to early May). – (Super K)

Jeffrey Okudah: The standout out 2017 DB was in Norman yet again last week and as we told you then, the visit was initiated by Okudah himself after calling a couple fellow recruits he’s close with to join him on the trip. Since then we’ve had a chance to catch up with Okudah to see how the visit went and where things stand with his recruitment as a whole.

“It (OU) felt like home, as it always does. And just being with the guys they (OU) have committed in the 2017 class, it’s like I’m with my teammates,” Okudah told TFB.

The sense right now is that Oklahoma and Ohio State are likely the two schools on top for Okudah, who has already said he plans to be in Norman the weekend those same two teams square off on the field. The outcome of which could end up deciding the fate of both programs as it relates to Okudah. – (Super K)

– UPDATE (Fri., 3:28 pm): Sooners make the Top 5 for 2017 DL Akial Byers.

UPDATE (Sat., 5:13 pm): It would appear Dallis Todd is not expected to return this fall.

– UPDATED (Sun., 11:48 am):

– UPDATED (Mon., 2:15 pm): Fully realize most, if not all, of these are in the comments below, but wanted to make sure Brandon was properly recognized for chasing down some quality info. As the Sooners are expected to host a large contingent of very talented Georgia prospects for what will be an ‘invite only’ recruiting event on the part of the OU coaching staff.

    Giddy up! ?

  • cdzendolet says:

Love hearing the news about Kelly, but I think we probably all thought he was going to be a special guy. They don’t grow 5-stars on trees – I can’t wait to see him on the field!

I really hope JT learns his lesson this time.

    • cush creekmont says:

That “nothing good happens at 2AM” needs to be put on the apartment and dorm doors for each guy to see.

      • SquidGiant says:

How about, “Act like a champion tonight”

        • ND52 says:

Lol! I can just hear the shouts of some players as they leave the dorms after reading that sign. “Hey, did you guys see what the sign back there said?”

“Yeah, it said drink like a champion tonight.”

“Okay, so we need to…..wait, what? That’s not what that sign back there said man!

“Dude you really, really need to start paying attention in English class cause you’re slippin bro. Oh but don’t you worry—-we’re gonna act like champs at everything we do tonight: eating, drinking, hitting on girls…..”

“So that’s really what that sign means?”

          Yuuuuup!”

        • TSFFKAG says:

Or, as grandma always says, “Unless you have a night job, don’t listen to the jive, the devil owns the hours between 10 (pm) and 5 (am).”

    • JB says:

They seem to grow a lot of 5* players on trees in Cali…

  • Tony B says:

Wow loving this early OP! You all must be leaving for a holiday vacation this morning.

    • Jordan Esco says:

Nah, just knew you all wouldn’t want to wait for good news 🙂

      • cush creekmont says:

Yessir, you got us there. Thanks for digging out the info. You, K, and Brandon have been all over this stuff.

      • Tony B says:

Well thank you all! I hope we hear some more before the weekend’s end. I am talking about a boom and not in the form of my neighbors fireworks that seem to go off about the time I fall asleep. Have a great holiday Jordan.

      • SoonerSpy says:

Jordan, I want to be the 115th reader here to say thanks for all you do.

  • cush creekmont says:

Very early OP – If it cuts into News comments, sorry Jordan. I still really like the NEWS as well – varied topics if FB things are slow.

  • SoonerMagic76 says:

Thanks for the news on both practice notes and recruiting. Hoping that the “boom watch” turns in to a “BOOM!”

  • cush creekmont says:

I guessed the Newman offer and the aggification of Creed Humphrey had some connection. Well, if you want to be a SOONER Mr. Newman, then OUr team wants you!

    • Jim Casy says:

      Aggification. That’s pure gold.

    • soonerthunder says:

rather it be to A&M than ut. also, want bowen badly, and cobb for that matter if coaches do–and they do if he signs with us, don’t care what others here say who don’t know him personally or what’s really going on in his life. OU coaches do, and if they want him they have good reason to want him. if coaches want him and they know 1,000 times more about him and his situation than any fan and some fans say they don’t right now, it’s immaturity from adults who ought to be more sympathetic with sometimes perceived immaturity of a 17/18 yr old they don’t know personally.

  • Randy says:

So If I am reading this right, Kelly (Sam LB = Devante Bond) and Jackson (Jack LB = Striker ) ?

  • Sooner Ray says:

TFB running a trick play this morning, caught me off guard. 🙂

  • disqus_MGlT3IoZ53 says:

Thanks for the news! I am not discrediting the info on Thomas but every player i can remember in the Stoops era has gotten a one game suspension for an arrest. It would be very surprising to me, even if there are no assault charges, that he wouldn’t serve a one game suspension. Either way I am glad it sounds like he wont be severely punished

  • SoonerfanTU says:

Landing Okudah would be huge. This is the type of player that the Bamas and Ohio States have been getting, that OU has not. Having him in the secondary, Kelly at LB, with some of the young studs we have on the Dline, we’ve really upgraded our defensive talent in recent years.

    • soonerthunder says:

steven parker and jordan thomas are as good as bama/osu dbs if not better. very good players. knew parker would be among the great safeties to play at OU barring injuries a/f state 6A championship game. dominated D1 players playing out of position on O, D, and also playing STs. Knew we had something very special then.

      • Mark_in_VA says:

If Parker takes a similar leap from last to this year as he did between Fr. and So., he will have one of the best years any safety has ever had at OU. He could have a TRRW type of Jr. campaign.

      • SoonerfanTU says:

I don’t necessarily disagree with you, and NFL draft position isn’t the end all be all of college football evaluations, but both Bama and OSU have had multiple first round picks from their secondaries is recent drafts. Some pretty high. I doubt if the draft was held today that either Parker or Thomas would go in the first round.

        • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Aaron Colvin has come right in and started after healing. I think another way to look at it is who wasn’t drafted but has become a starter? Colvin, Jefferson. That’s two.

    • Doobie74OU says:

If they were to close the deal on Okudah and Wilson it would be a huge step forward for the defense. I wonder when the last time OU,had 5 star recruits at all 3 levels of the defense!

    • Super K says:

Okudah is also an early enrollee so almost guaranteed to be on the field next fall.

  • David Schulte says:

Hope the report about Thomas is true. He needs to get it together.

  • DR LEO MARVIN says:

    BALLLFOOOT!!!!!!!!!!!!! BOOMER!!!!!!!!!

  • C.A. says:

Landing Okudah would really solidify how solid this #soonersquad17 recruiting class really is. That would really attract other big time recruits of that stature.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

Morning all. Great weekend OP. Thanks Super K

  • Scott says:

Man I can’t wait for this upcoming season. OU is among the Elite in recruiting now. Always feels great to be a Sooner. It’s 8:09 and Texsa sucks.

    • cush creekmont says:

      They do! Especially at FOOTBALL!

    • ALar03 says:

I think we are close.. All it takes is one of these.. Haha

      • Scott says:

I’m really liking our chances with Okudah, Roger’s , Wilson. I can’t wait for that Ohio St game , we may break a record with recruits in attendance that game.

  • Sam Philbeck says:

So what are the chances of a boom from Newman and acouple late additions to the 2016 class in Cobb and Bowen? 50%? 60%

    • Slim Sooner says:

      50-50 chance on each!

      • Bob Edwards says:

Or if you are Dean Bleavins or in Canada 55-55.

        • cush creekmont says:

Canadian football season has started. I watched about ten minutes of a game last weekend. It’s kind of fun to watch almost-football being played on an oversized field. But, it is football (almost) and there is nothing else being played 🙂

        • cush creekmont says:

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

I wonder if there’s any chance Kelly passes Obo by the beginning of the season?

  • BamaSooner#12! says:

By September, we’re going to be saying “what JT arrest?” Moving on…

I’m super psyched to see Kelly and Jackson. I remember Jackson’s video last year and he was in permanent Beast Mode!

  • hOUligan says:

Up early and find an early weekend OP AND it’s full of good news!! BOOMER!!! Need Okudah to make himself a certified OUDNA member of SoonerSquad17 NOW and begin helping w/ the heavy lifting filling out the defense w/ Marvin and Chaisson and Rogers and maybe convince Browning, too.

    • cush creekmont says:

Mr. Okudah looks like he has OUDNA. He just needs to come forth and announce it 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

  • ND52 says:

TFB has been told by two sources that Thomas’ punishment will take place over the course of this summer. And so long as he complies with what is asked of him, Thomas is not expected to be suspended for a game/s this fall.

I had to read this section over several times just to believe it.

    • Rob says:

The best part is that it basically back hand slaps Hoover after the article he wrote. I love it.

    • Bob Edwards says:

Some people forget that an arrest and a conviction are two different things. Sounds like JT’s biggest problem may have been his choice of drinking buddies.

      • SoonerOracle737 says:

        Bingo.

      • ND52 says:

Very true sir. And I think even fewer people know that there’s a difference between being detained by the police vs. being arrested by the police.

        • cush creekmont says:

From what I read, NO charges were filed….

          • ND52 says:

That is correct sir—-as of right now. Now, whether the young man is question didn’t actually do anything or someone “interceded” on his behalf with the Cleveland County DA’s Office is up for speculation.

          • Bob Edwards says:

There is also the fact that the legal system is generally overloaded. Judges, the DA, and the cops are often willing to let a guy go over minor offenses if they know someone is going to handle it. I had a judge force my son to call me and come down when he tried to handle it on his own. Once I showed up and assured the judge it would be dealt with he was released and only ordered to pay court costs. Of course they see a kid too many times and that doesn’t become an option any more.

          • ND52 says:

            Oh absolutely @bobedwards1:disqus

And the only reason we’re discussing this is because he’s a star on a big-time college FB team cause I’m sure OU students are getting arrested by NPD nearly every weekend for similar foolishness.

          • Bob Edwards says:

Correct and if he were a student he might pay a small fine, court costs and be done with it. Given the choice between that and a summer with a pissed off Schmitty I think I’ll take the fine or even a night in the drunk tank.

          • ND52 says:

Yup @bobedwards1:disqus: Jordan Thomas is now officially “that guy” on the OU squad:

            https://media.giphy.com/media/xrgr3MweKDLi0/giphy.gif

    • Slim Sooner says:

Are you in disbelief because you are pleased or displeased with his punishment?

        • Slim Sooner says:

OKie dOKie. Got the vibe you might be displeased about no suspension, guess not. That could still happen if he doesn’t behave until Sept 3.

          • ND52 says:

I hope the young man has a great season and a great career elsewhere but I trust the coaching staff to make this decision in both the best interests of OU as well as this young man.

Look at it this way @slimsooner:disqus: would Manziel have benefitted from some tough love by the A&M coaching staff a few years ago? I’m of the belief that he should have sat-out at least half of his final season down there.

          • Slim Sooner says:

Wow. You have every right to your hopes and opinions. I personally would prefer he gets his act together, serves his punishment, and has a great season and career right here, but that’s just me. I also trust the coaches’ decisions to be in the best interest of the players and university just like they always have been in my opinion. I’m unwilling to compare JT to Manziel. Not even close.

          • ND52 says:

            @slimsooner:disqus

Really—-you see no parallels between their respective behaviors while in college?

          • Slim Sooner says:

No. Jordan Thomas is OUrs and I’m not ready to send him packing to succeed elsewhere. That’s just my opinion at this time. Doesn’t mean a thing to anybody else and every fan has a right to their own view of how he parallels to Manziel. I don’t know enough to go there.

          • ND52 says:

I never sad anything about kicking the guy off the team—-in either player’s case. It’s just that sometimes we—-and coaches as well—-tend to overlook character flaws when it’s coming from one of our own.

            That’s all.

Have a wonderful holiday weekend @slimsooner:disqus!

          • Slim Sooner says:

Ok, sorry if I misunderstood. I thought you meant you hoped he would be playing elsewhere (not OU) in the future. You have a great holiday, too!

  • Jim Casy says:

Need to get some DL up in this mofo

  • kt-raida says:

Great news! If we get Okudah and possibly be in play for Browning….WOW!!!!! Ive always liked Newman more than Creed Humphrey. Lets get Chaisson, bring Lamb back and end it with Big Marvin!

  • BoomerShauner says:

Could you imagine if we got Okudah AND Anthony Hines AND Marvin Wilson?! That would be something. I don’t put much stock in Baron Browning committing to us. But those other three I think are very possible.

  • TSFFKAG says:

Anyone heard anything about the “Injury List” this summer? How is Perine? How is Lampkin? McGinnis? Garnett? Others? Are they 100% …just curious.

    • Bob Edwards says:

I have seen no injuries report so far. There are always dents and dings this time of year, but the major ones usually get reported pretty quick.

    • Daryl says:

Great question and I am very interested to see how our young DL looks when the finally get to do some real drills and work. We need Lampkin, Overton, Gallimore, Mann and company tthat step up. Especially with Campbell leaving.

  • TSFFKAG says:

If Okudah doesn’t have OUDNA, then no one does. I hope he realizes that and comes home. ; )

    • SavageSoonerEsq says:

If OU could somehow land this guy I could see him taking over at some point when Steven Parker leaves. Going into college they’re almost physical clones of each other. This would be a huge get and will help OU finish with a much needed top 5 overall class.

  • Jpsooner23 says:

I want Zabie! LSU fans still feel confident that ealy will stay home FWIW.

  • TSFFKAG says:

Any prediction what round Quick will go in the NFL, or is it way too early? I think he has a much better shot as a DB I the NFL, rather than on offense.

    • SavageSoonerEsq says:

Way too early. He’ll have to find his way into the starting lineup first. I think he will, and agree that the defensive side of the ball gives him the greatest upside & best chance to play ball at the next level.

  • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

    Let’s go! Thank goodness.
Yesterday we had massive storm hit Vegas hard and I drove my car through maybe 4-5 inches of water and my piece of crap made car ( BMW ) hydro locked. I can’t believe it. Everything I’ve read thus far suggests I’ll need a new engine. Hopefully the insurance company will cover this. Anyways I would LOVE to get a Boom today. I hope everyone has a wonderful Friday!

    • SoonerOracle737 says:

Wow. That was a bad day. We had a storm blow through Collinsville, OK yesterday with torrential rain and 70 mph winds. I danged sure wasn’t going driving in that.

      • cush creekmont says:

Not a drop of rain in my part of Tulsa…and not a drop of football either!

      • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

I felt like I was back home in Texas/OK with the storm we had. I was actually driving a friend of mine to go get his car from the shop when the roads just started flooding like crazy. The infrastructure here in town is horrendous and any amount of rain results in flooding.

        • 47 Straight OU Know says:

Remember one time I visited it rained for literally 2 minutes and the streets flooded. You all need some more grass out there to soak up some of that water.

    • Josh Weaver says:

Had that happen to my Nissan when I was in high school. I was told the chances of it happening was slim but does happen. It required an engine swap at the time.

Just like OKC did with the thunder, I believe Vegas natives would latch onto any team, whether it’s an expansion team or even the raiders/ chargers.

We’ve got 6 professors from UNLV who belong in my a rotary group and they said things are on the rise. They are starting to open their check books and pay coaches. They got the bishop Gorman coach as their head coach and he’s doing well recruiting. They are also opening up a medical school next Spring which should help them. My dad went to UCLA and watched them against the Rebs this past year he said the number of UCLA fans was insane compared to UNLV.

          • KJ1123 says:

Thats sad, back in their BB hayday, they were bada$$. Randall Cunningham was good when he was there too.

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

My aunt was raised in Oklahoma and grew up an OU fan but her family moved to Vegas so she attended UNLV during that time. • Gary Robbins says:

A little Dean Blevins % predictions. Listed 10 athletes OU has a chance of signing. I haven’t kept up with their recruiting. A slow morning for me while I wait on Friday happy hours.
    1. Jeffrey Okudah, S, Grand Prairie, Tx.
    2. Xavier Newman, og, Desoto, Tx.
    3. K’Lavon Chaisson, wde, Houston, Tx
    4. Stephan Zabie, ot, Austin, Tx.
    5. Adrian Ealy, ot, Gonzales, La.

    8. Greg Rogers, dt, Las Vegas,Nv
    9. Anthony Hines, ilb, Plano, Tx.

    • KJ1123 says:

      Legit chances too.

    • Katyboomer says:

What about the OT that’s moving from Cal to Texas? I forget his name, but I think we are pretty high on his list as well.

      • Birddawg says:

        Chuck Filagia,

        • Katyboomer says:

          Yeah that’s it

          • KJ1123 says:

Jus my opinion but I like Ealy and Zabie better at OT. I think Filiaga would be a better guard.

          • Katyboomer says:

Wonder if they would go for Filagia as an OG or if they stay with Newman as the main target?

          • KJ1123 says:

Im not sure, I mean Im sure they will love to have either, but how they go about recruiting them depends on factors outside of their control.

          • Gary Robbins says:

For 2017 does OU take over or under 25 total?

I see people talking about getting Okudah at safety. Super K has said he wants play corner in college and I think that would be best for him. He sounds like a Jalen Ramsey clone and FSU used Ramsey to show how much a corner can impact run defense. I would love to get an athlete like him holding down the boundary.

What I think the coaches want to do is use Kelly how they wanted to use Striker. But strike didn’t have all the athleticism people thinks he had. Which is why I think Kelly is going to be great.

    • DR LEO MARVIN says:

Kelly has a lot more of a build to be a true linebacker than Striker did. Striker was great but too small for the next level. Kelly has what it takes to play on Sundays in size alone.

Why does the Oklahoma media insist on getting the Mixon video released? We are so screwed when it finally gets leaks if he’s still on campus at the time. With the way media works now a days I could easily see them calling for heads to roll. I know you all don’t think something like that will happen, but I can’t lie, I’ll be dreading the day that video becomes public record.

I think it plays bad with anyone who doesn’t know any details at all.

We know that members of the media saw it, Boren/Castiglione/Stoops saw it, and law enforcement saw it. A decision was made for his punishment by Stoops and Co. after seeing the video, which is way different than what happened with Ray Rice (with whom everyone would compare it to, even though one is domestic violence, and Mixon’s wasn’t). I think the administration can sleep soundly knowing they had all the information and made a punishment, that was nearly as harsh as kicking him off the team – but it was also a punishment Mixon got to learn from.

Boom by 5PM CST Over/ Under?

  • Boom says:

I find it interesting they will be using Kelly as a Sam backer. I thought he would be an outside guy but it makes sense with his length and coverage abilities, Sam would be a great spot.
Hope Jackson can maximize his summer and be ready to go.

    • Bob Edwards says:

I don’t understand what you are trying to say. The Sam backer is an outside backer.

      • Boom says:

Striker was not a Sam backer, nor was Bond. Last year it was Alexander who played behind the DL.

        • Bob Edwards says:

But playing behind the DL makes him a Mike in the Sam-Mike-Will naming scheme. Sam is Strong side, Mike is Middle and Will is Weak.

          • Boom says:

You are correct and the Sam does play outside in a 3-4 but not on the line. I didn’t communicate this very well as I read my post but I thought he would be more of a Jack or OLB like Bond when we took the NB out.

          • Bob Edwards says:

OK. I know 4-3 better than 3-4 and get hung up on the nomenclature sometimes.

          • Boom says:

Sam is ILB in the 3-4 and sometimes line up in the Mike position on a 4-3. Sometimes he will be outside but not as much which is why I was interested in this position for him. If moved inside, I thought he would be a Will. I’m just glad hes not hype but the real deal and he’s in these meetings.

    • Fear The Magic says:

The good thing about Kelly is that he looks to have a frame that will take another 20-25 lbs. I can see him keeping his speed and athleticism and play at about 235.

  • Bob Edwards says:

I remember walking down the hall with one of the more well known troublemakers in school. He got stopped and I didn’t. Thing is, he had a pass and I didn’t. So, yeah I was pretty much that kid.

Fexas is putting together an incredible recruit class. Appears that the RRR is going to be very interesting for the next couple of years. I am actually glad to see it, the B12 needs Fexas to get back on track. I have missed the anticipation of the 2nd week of October.

    • Boom says:

If they can make the dysfunction function, then yes, they will be good.

      • soonerinks says:

With the pending downfall of Baylor, that leaves OU, TCU and OSU to carry the B12 flag. Fexas assuming their place NEAR the top of the conference is a good thing.

Quick question – I believe I have read all of your opinions on Cobb and whether you want him, but is he still a take for Stoops? It seems his waffling has tempered the OU interest, and his no-show at Texas ended theirs. If not OU, then where for Cobb, TCU?

  • gtq says:

Anyone heard any early scoop on where Brandon Bowen might be heading? Seems like he has gone about the whole leaving Baylor process very discreetly – which I admire. I have heard OU has a chance, but I have not heard one comment that would indicate someone has anything concrete.

After the party got out of hand last weekend we had to wait for things to cool down. Now let me tell you how the TFB party went down last night.
It all started when Walter walked into the bar Jordan was like hey let’s get this party started. Dick brought in a keg of ice cold Budlight and Brown brought the tap and ofcourse tapped the keg. Connie was the first to do a keg stand and that made Ganer jelous. Boom brought in a Boom box and before you knew it we were all listening to Sooner’s greatest hits. Katy lowered the lights and Bgood brought in some BEVo burgers from the kitchen bar.DOC was trying to be responsible and not offend anyone at the party. While Mojo was checking out the margarita machine for quality of taste. Pagan added a fifth of Jose to the machine as he said these drinks are to weak. Slim to it easy on the BEVO burgers as he was trying to Slim down. Hou said Texsa sucks and Root Rooted for that. David brought in a Texsa tombstone with Mack Browns last game on it. 403 said we were going to drink til 403. Inks showed everyone his new Okie Lite sucks tattoo and Mike said he was happy to have Mike Stoops back this year. Sooper brought in some football shaped burritos and said hey these are football related for the TFB party. Ed enjoyed a burrito with an ice cold Budlight while Lane tried to stay in check doing shots at the bar with Soonersd. JiminTEXAS said he wished he lived in Norman since Texsa sucks. Chubbs brought up how good the BBQ is going to be at the red river game next year. Sanchez said man I wish Zach would have stayed one more year and Raida promised a big party in Lubbock next year. Boz showed us one of his big hits books and Ray autographed it for him signed I’M Ray Texsa sucks. Oscar checked the kitchen to see if the additional Bevo was ready yet and CCR and Spolar had already eaten it.Hogg Brought in another keg as we had already finished the last one. CC and rocket showed up in a rented school bus and invited all of the TFB crew on as we were alittle drunk and needed a ride. They took us over to Brandons house where the party continued. Fear had a fear the cops would come as we were offending all of the neighborhood. Bob shot a few bottle rockets at the neighbors with the Longhorn flag and dawg rang their door bell and invited them over for some Bevo. Upon arrival Sam noticed the neighbors Mack Brown tattoo and wouldn’t you know the neighbors name was Charlie. JP asked Charlie to come with him and Sparky assited in giving Charlie a swirley in Brandons bathroom. London showed up as Charlie was leaving and accidently kicked pour Charlie and Jed threw a horns down sign for all to see. T Rob began showing everyone at the party some text on some new five stars coming to OU in 2017 and 47 knew all 47 of them. Jason brought some good film over from last season and we all watched it in the man cave. Super K rolled in with a TFB decaled up YETI cooler filled with more Budlight and the party continued. Cheryl thought the yeti would look good with some lawn chairs around it and brought 75 chairs for the TFB list family. Rick was two handing it with two BudLights and that made Dustin sad because it meant he had to drive Rick home. Matt happened to be the ref that night and said FOOTBALL which made Cush grab a Football and pass it to Mailicongs who set it down to be hit by Golf with a Golf club. The ball was then thrown by 76 76 times back in forth until Alar made an interception and stopped to do a keg stand and happened to fumble it was then recovered by Robertson who almost made it back to the garage and had to lateral back to Woods as the pressure was coming from Bleed after the lateral Dave made it back to Brandons bar and thought he was safe until one drink too many created another turnover of the bottle and the ball. Wolf took the football and got on the roof and passed it down to 72 at the neighbor Charlies door 72 rang the door bell and Charlie did not want to play anymore. Oora said that is ok Texsa sucks pass me the ball. Once he had the ball Big joe received his pass and JR traded him a beer for the football. But all of the sudden Jr decided beer was more important and passed the ball to Markva who took it and ran to the store to buy more beer Zach stole the ball and passed it to Collin who then threw it to Jake who happened to be passing by in the Sooner Schooner and caught the ball with a few fine woman in the back of the wagon. Jake invited Scott on to the wagon and introduced him to the woman who were very good looking. Scott stayed on the Schooner for awhile and Dc hopped on and gave them directions back to the party. When they got back Drew pulled up with a few more kegs as it was getting Rainy we moved the party back inside. Vegas put on the movie vegas vacation and 737 watched some flight videos on his phone. Native said texsa sucks as texsasucks and 92 shotgunned two more beers Shelby got a photograph of this for blackmail and Tex paid her off for the only copy. Wilson talked about being a star in the movie cast away like he does at every party. Pimp rolled up with a few woman in a big crimson limo which doobie got into and there seemed to be smoke coming out of the car from what im not sure. Hawk swooped in and stole the last beer and Brien pulled out a secret stash from a few of the closets. Bear had a feeling the party was coming to an end but Colorado showed up with some coors light as cold as the rockies and told Higg its ok to have a few more. Woof said a few huh and Daryl said how about six more Joe took that as volume and turned up the Texsa sucks sound track six more notches. Kj said man I think we are getting too loud as Ouknow kept singing Texsa sucks hits like Texsa suck the neighbor Charlie was getting very angry now So Lcar and Petron went over and promised to turn it down. Stl and CdZ were sad it was their favorite sound track and Cav talked Framoka in to turning it back up which for wasn’t loud enough for Hwsnb who turned it all the way up after Skeith switched it to Texsa sucks greatest hits Charlie Strong edition. To which Canada and Mikey knew every word and music was even yelling the songs through the megaphone he got from 4ever. Then Casey heard a beating on the door and 89 went and checked Brooklyn then relayed that Dana had been at Charlies and called the fun police.

Fascinating how rather then dwelling about the usual X’s and O’s they call him an artist and suggest that when he’s in the zone he is simply unstoppable. What high praise for a young man they describe as different then any one else this year; quirky, unique, creative. And charismatic because he believes fully in himself. How cool is it that we have someone with that much promise coming up the line and learning the game from an OU perspective. It’s just AWESOME! You couldn’t script a better person to replace the equally creative and confident Baker Mayfield. • SoonerOracle737 says:

      That qualifies as a downdate.

      • Drew says:

Not sure I’d agree. Like most of Norvell’s recruits, Todd never really contributed much, and while I wish he had succeeded here, his moving on (probably due to a lack of playing time) opens up a scholarship for our loaded ’17 class.

        • Daryl says:

It is funny you say that. I was just wondering what the transfer/dropout or not produce ratio was with Norvell recruits. Now let’s be real he did help land Shep Jalen Saunders and Neal but still the survival rate of a Norvell recruit would be interesting to look at.

          • Drew says:

And really, Shep shouldn’t count there at all; he was never going to be anything other than a Sooner. I’ll give you Saunders and Neal, but Saunders was a transfer, and Neal greatly underproduced (he was a higher ranked WR than Shep). But yeah, from what I’ve seen Norvell’s track record was simply awful.

          • paganpink says:

I agree. You can’t credit any Coach other then Stoops (or all the coaches) for Sterling!

          • Bob Edwards says:

My impression is that Norvell was good at recruiting guys with the physical skills but seemed to not do a good job on the intangibles. Some had character issues like Meteyor and Jarboe, others just didn’t seem to progress very well. Most of his successes were transfers like Saunders, Justin Brown, and Lacoltan Bester. Either that or he wasn’t good at developing talent.

          • paganpink says:

I think it was the latter. Occam’s razor says it was the latter!

On the flip side..I do try to talk about the positive stuff…but often times that doesnt happen until the season.

        • cush creekmont says:

Eventhough a lot of you think he is going Arky it won’t happen. He didn’t go to school his Sophmore year of highschool and I think he won’t be eligible. Arkansas hasn’t even offered the guy and there better be a good reason why you don’t offer your top in state recruit.

    • Drew says:

He dropped then; he was number 2. Still, makes no difference to me, the kid is massive and still growing.

  • Walter Sobcek says:

Since so many Baylor recruits ended up at Texas, OU should get credit for two wins after beating Horns this year

  • Kdl says:

Dang… From my perspective we are gonna be hurting at WR depth all of the sudden. ?

    • JR says:

He was 3rd team at best. Not going to knock the kid but this isn’t an issue. Experience is the main issue at WR and this doesn’t change that fact.

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

  • BleedCrimson says:

62 DTG – 2 All Americans wore this number.
Reggie Kinlaw AA 76-78; John Roush AA 72-74; Larry Medice 87-90

  • SoonerfanTU says:

So that leaves us with the following WR’s, not counting walk-ons:

    Andrews
    Baxter
    Green
    Lewis
    Mead
    Miller
    Smallwood
    Westbrook
    Jones
    Farrar

Pretty thin, especially when you consider that 3 of those guys will graduate after this year.

    • hOUligan says:

Oooohh…. CD. You lookin’ at this depth chart? Chance for early PT for some guys willing to put in the work.

    • Jason Vos says:

I’d throw Joe Mixon in there, he will see a lot of playing time in the slot this year

      • BleedCrimson says:

I like it. Good hands and can OUt muscle a DB. Him in open space can be dangerOUs.

    • JR says:

I wouldnt say that 10 WR is thin. Inexperienced for sure but that would have been the case with or without Todd. Also explains why they are looking to add roughly 4 or 5 wr for 2017

      • SoonerfanTU says:

It may not be all that thin from a game day point of view, but from a running a program point of view, it’s pretty thin. I think Riley said at one point he like to have about 8 bodies to play. When you factor in potential injuries, redshirts, scout team players, and just practice in general, that is not an ideal number of bodies.

      • JR says:

I would also include Reggie Turner who will most likely compete for playing time.

    • Jason Vos says:

We are getting the juco slot receiver that is like Jalen Saunders. His name escapes me

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

If it means more Perine, Mixon, and company I’m happy with that

    • SavageSoonerEsq says:

This is where missing on guys like KD Cannon can really come back to haunt a team.

      • Jdizzle says:

To be fair, Baylor got a ton of receivers like him (Briles could recruit receivers). Unless you are talking about him transferring after all the scum came out, he never left.

        • SavageSoonerEsq says:

I’m talking about OU barely missing out on receivers recently. I.e. Being a recruit’s second choice. I’m usually a glass-half-full guy, but with this type of attrition it’s obvious how much we needed guys like KD even though at the time most agreed that it wouldn’t be that big of a deal in the long run. Hopefully it still won’t be a big deal & the WRs we have will step up this year. But obviously KD would’ve been a lock to start & erased a lot of the uncertainty this year at WR.

          • cush creekmont says:

That is NOT new! OU was second choice for Julio Jones back then. Partly the fault of Norvell, OU took all the high-talent, head-cases, but never got the top-talent, good character guys, except the super-legacy of Shep. It’s not an accident that so many transfers and JCs were solid starters for OU.

          • SavageSoonerEsq says:

True & I don’t get it. We got Josh Jarboe instead & we saw how that turned out…Metoyer Etc. & then miss in guys like Meachum & Ginn. So frustrating.

        • SavageSoonerEsq says:

    WR Depth Chart

WR – Geno Lewis /Jeff Mead/ Dahu Green
IR – Jarvis Baxter / Reggie Turner
IR – Mark Andrews / Mykel Jones
WR – Dede Westbrook/ Jordan Smallwood/ AD Miller

Not the strongest WR group, but not bad either. It really doesn’t matter though, we will be running the ball a lot more this year anyway.

Hey Sam. Yes he is, he’s been putting in some major work in the weight room and on the grid iron. He knows the D line he’s gonna face in a year will be much stronger and faster then his high school peers. I told him if you want to really have a chance of early playing time, then you have to be working and training harder then the guys that’s already on campus. Thats your competiion now.

        • Sooner Ray says:

          Good advice.

        • SamSooner says:

TRob, not a lot of people have the kind of support your are giving Tyrese. Thank you for being invested in him and his future. We need more people like you in the world.

        • Drew says:

You’re absolutely right. Look at Samia for example; by all reports he worked his tail off all offseason last year, and he was a full time starter midseason.

    • hOUligan says:

Thanks for the update on Tyrese, T Rob. Young man has ‘it’ … and ‘it’ is desire coupled w/ the willingness to put in hard work. Man… just cannot say enough good things about him and what this SoonerSquad17 class is doing to prepare themselves NOW. Alpha Dawg. Bandy is another.

      • T. Rob says:

Thanks hooligan. There’s a bunch of hungry guys in this class. I love Bandys ambition, he’s going to be a special player. Another guy who I see always working hard this summer is the DE M. CHASSION..who has OU as his top selection, that dude is niceeee…i hope we seal the deal on him. But in all, this class should be one to remember for the record book when they’re all done.

        • hOUligan says:

Thanx, T Rob. Love hearing some ‘inside’ on these young guys and how they are prepping and repping. Really wanted Bowen last year. Browning reminds me of Bowen but would take either and Bowen has more length to add weight. And love Chaisson’s potential. Wish he or Gumbs would commit and get to work on the other recruits. seats on the bus are filling up fast.

  • Doobie74OU says:

Super K or Jordan really whoeverlol! With a couple of WR leaving the program will we be looking to add more to #SoonerSquid17? I know we are still looking to get bake Lamb and making a push for Omar Manning but will there now be more spaces available or will we use the for other positions?

    • Soonerbred says:

Are you suggesting receivers with 8 arms? Lol.

    • Jordan Esco says:

They’re going to have to considering who they will definitely lose (Westbrook, Baxter, Lewis) and/or could leave early (Andrews).

      • Doobie74OU says:

Yeah along with Hardy leaving before he really got here, Todd & Humphrey leaving the program. Quick moving to defense. Seems like there will be a bigger hole after this season!

    • Mark_in_VA says:

I am wishing more than ever they hadn’t shut down Hunter Rison. And for the record, I was really bummed even when it happened as this kid seemed like he was all in on being a Sooner.

      • OohRah Mama says:

With ya on that one. I was very disappointed to hear we’d backed out on him. Burning someone who truly feels that OU DNA is never the right thing to do. It may bite us in the ass.

        • Drew says:

To be fair, we were full. It sucks, and I bet Stoops was just as disappointed as Rison was, but Rison knew we were filling up at the time; that’s just the way it goes sometimes.

          • OohRah Mama says:

Sure. I get it, I do. But to lose Rison for Lamb who promptly decommitted just stank. Rison just shines to me for some reason.

          • Drew says:

I agree with that. Part of the reason I think a lot of us here aren’t really jumping on the train to get Lamb back is it forcing us to turn Rison down. IIRC Rison was going to commit that weekend too.

  • Daryl says:

TFB can you guys get in touch with some “sources” confirming that KD is staying and that Russ will be staying next year too.

No dOUbt. Some of these young guys are going to step up and be on the receiving end. Love the way this offense is evolving. Lincoln is building a monster in Norman. Gonna be like godzilla wearing crimson and cream stomping his way thru the big 12 …. FOOTBALL.

        • UGA Sooner says:

Apparently the only thing keeping Mykel Jones out of top 100 recruit status was a broken leg from the previous season. Not sure where I read that, but I’m excited about him

          • Drew says:

Didn’t know that. Just rewatched his hudl, and I believe it. He looks like a taller, faster Shep in his film.

    • cush creekmont says:

Thanks Ray. Well, at least there will be something to read on the first day back to work…

      • Sooner Ray says:

Good indication that there will be an OP, just hoping it’s one of those early one’s.

  • Coach JK says:

Fellow Brainiacs, I want to wish everyone a happy 4th of July. Have a great day and remember to be safe.

  • Boomer4life says:

    Happy 4th of July?????

  • ToatsMcGoats says:

So, I don’t post much anymore…but I wanted to say that you guys are effin crazy and that you are keeping the board tolerable in the slowest time of the year. Ray, Malicong, hOUligan, Sam, Daddy, Metz, Dr. Leo, KJ1123, Brein, Cush, Doobie, Ooh Rah, TRob, Pagan, Dustin, CcR, FTM, Jed, Boomer4life, Clint Lenard, CIrwin, Dana…etc…you guys make this site worth lurking on every single day. Thanks, and happy 4th!

  • Boom says:

Competition creates attrition. I wish him well but if a WR doesn’t make an impact early normally he won’t make it. WRs who standout from day 1 normally get invited to the draft if they do the right things. Now we have the opportunity to bring a possible game changer in out next recruiting class.

    • Sooner Ray says:

I’m hoping the one’s who haven’t seen much of the field see this as an opportunity and bust their butts all summer to up their game.

    • BleedCrimson says:

      *OUr
I am hoping Bake is hard on these guys all summer, but want them to be harder on themselves. Do not accept anything but greatness. In Ali’s words. “Champions aren’t made in gyms. Champions are made from something they
have deep inside them-a desire, a dream, a vision. They have to have the
skill, and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill.”

    • BleedCrimson says:

I like this kid already! God bless those that have or are serving to keep us free!

    • ToatsMcGoats says:

Saw this on LT…This dude has the right mindset!

      • Sooner Ray says:

That’s where I saw it also. Thought it was a cool enough story to bring over here to be enjoyed.

        • ToatsMcGoats says:

Indeed. Not many kids that put service over publicity, but this kid has found a way to do both! Future general!

          • Sooner Ray says:

Not sure there has ever been a D-1 player narrow his choices to the service schools, and to announce on the 4th is that much more unique.

          • ToatsMcGoats says:

It is cool, and unique. Not only that, but this kid really brings something to the table. Our country needs more kids like this one, for sure.

          • BleedCrimson says:

I think that is very cool. I hope he makes a big splash in sports, but a bigger splash in service. Ex-Navy speaking. 🙂

          • Boom says:

Who is this guy. He’s already an all American in my book.

    • ToatsMcGoats says:

We don’t need no damn cats!

      • Sooner Ray says:

I just watched this on the news and had to go find it, LMAO!

        • ToatsMcGoats says:

Hahaha! Those spats look good, but they don’t win games! Get them dogs in here, they’ll tear this mother up!

      • BleedCrimson says:

That is the kind of coach I wOUld want my kid to play for!

      • OohRah Mama says:

Cat’ll tear a dog’s n**s*** and his face clean off and look cool doin’ it. I’ll take some cats.

Damn, I speak several kinds of South, but that one’s hard to follow. I need some Excedrin. My brain’s smacking my ears for listening to it.

    • BleedCrimson says:

LMAO! That was good. Stealing from Metz’s words… WOOF!

  • Boom says:

All these WRs leaving or transferring makes me think of when we had a ton of RBs. They were highly rated and transferred. Never heard a word from any of them. After they left we got some guys named Perine and Mixon. Hmm.

  • BleedCrimson says:

I think we are looking at a lot of peaches. Is that okay to say?

  • Jason Vos says:

This guy Baron Browning has to be one of the best LB’s i’ve seen in a while. Big, fast, physical and can cover in space. Imagine what Mike Stoops could do with a guy like this in our 3-4 defense setting the edge and rushing the passer at OLB.

  • BleedCrimson says:

Happy fOUrth to everyone OUt there. I wOUld like to thank my brothers and sisters that have served or are serving. Speaking of, haven’t seen Jersey in a while.
I am not much of a word smith, but I would like to express something that is close to my heart.
I have to say that today is a bit emotional to me. It brings to thought all those that have brought forth the freedoms that we enjoy. As I have gotten older, I read more about our forefathers and the choices they made, even when it cost them the ultimate price. Many of us remember the stories of Washington, Adams, Jefferson, and Franklin’s efforts to form this country. I often wonder what it would have been like to be faced with their decisions. One of the reasons that I joined the service was in a single statement spoken by Nathan Hale. “I regret that I have but one life to give for my country”. Some have tried to say that it was a publicity stunt by the PR corps. I believe that it happened then and I believe it now. Which brings me to another name that I will remember not only on this day but many others. His beliefs cost him his life.
PS: the spot that the 1:10 of the clip just makes me sick to my stomach.

  • UGA Sooner says:

Happy fOUrth everyone! Thank you to everyone who has put their life on the line for this country and its people. I’m sure this is common knowledge, but please make sure there are no veterans with PTSD around when setting off fireworks. Also, be safe to all the commoners of this great forum. I don’t want to hear about any JPP stories. Happy holidays fellas!

P.S. As a Georgia kid, all this Georgia talent coming through on the 29th is making me giddy. Let’s get some holiday BOOMS and some BOOMS on the 29th. Let’s make this a month to remember!

  • BleedCrimson says:

Nice update. Glad to see Sermon bringing some friends to the party!

  • LottsSocks says:

Thanks for the updates! Can you clarify, is this a GA-only invite camp or will other states be represented? Thx.

    • thebigdroot says:

A lot of Texas talent will be there as well, several states to be accurate. These are new and due to OU not having a strong pull in Georgia it is worth noting. The recruiting this staff is pulling off is quite the turnaround from a few years ago.

    • This an invite only BBQ. This is a group of kids from GA that are extremely interested in OU. Remember that Cooks has GA ties. I believe he played for Falcons. Also, Coach Simmons and Boulware seem to be pushing the state, as well.

Actually, I’m sure the whole staff is putting forth the effort to make one of the most fertile states its next pipeline. Riley has OU pulling NC kids now. This staff is putting in the work. It is showing with high ranking class and on the field.

To answer your question…. It’s whoever they invite. All the commits( or most) will be there for the BBQ. So will most of the top guys from Oklahoma, Texas and the surrounding area. And we are talking from all classes, as well.

  • Brandon Hargraves says:

Love when we get to make an impact in sec country

    • Defend Colfax says:

We have some good position coaches who understand the weight an OU offer carries. We are a national brand, and have been getting national recruits year after year. The last couple years Texas has been locked up, we have done well in California but with USC getting scholarships back we need to make sure we are looking in places like Georgia, Louisiana, Virginia.

  • Jason Vos says:

Texas layers smh (From left to right Timothy Cole, Caleb Bluiett & Peter Jinkens)

    • Coach JK says:

It’s not as much hate as it is jealousy. They just wanna be like us. Sorry whorns, it will never happen. Just dream, hope, and take your azz whoopins.

    • Mark_in_VA says:

And yet still, not enough. OU gonna give you reasons to hate ’em even more, boys.

  • RBear says:

wonder how many of these kids are teammates/friends already…

  • SquidGiant says:

TFB thank you for helping me celebrate my independence from subscription sites!

  • Fear The Magic says:

Just wondering if anyone has any info on Johncarlo Valentin. I think that hes still not listed on the roster and at this point that seems kind of strange. It would really be bad to lose an OL prospect like him.
