BREAKING: Sooners Add CB Parrish Cobb To 2016 Class

Image via Scout

From a strictly football standpoint, with everything that has transpired in Waco this 2016 recruiting cycle will probably go down as one of the strangest maybe ever. And only helping add to that narrative was 2016 CB Parrish Cobb’s decision on Friday to re-join the University of Oklahoma’s 2016 signing class after Baylor granted Cobb a release from his national letter of intent.

Few here need to be reminded Cobb had long been an OU commit prior to changing his mind shortly before NSD staying closer to home and signing with the Bears. After being granted his release, however, Cobb did not lack for suitors now that a top-flight cornerback was unexpectedly back on the market.

Ultimately though it was Cobb’s previous connections to the OU defensive backs coach Kerry Cooks and the staff as a whole that won out in the end and the talented DB is now headed to Norman (again).

    BOOM!
    1 down….

  • soonerthunder says:

fantastic! I think CB is our weakest proven position on the team. Most worried about depth there, so this is huge. now bowen pls, and I’ll be more than happy

  • Scott says:

Welcome to the Family Mr Cobb , Newman your next.

  • Drew says:

So Jordan, do you or the rest of the TFBs know what this means in regards to our 2017 DB recruiting? Are we now full, in that we’ll be backing off of Okudah?

    • Scott says:

Theirs no way OU backs off Okudah.

      • KJ1123 says:

Yeah not a chance. Okudah is the type of player you hold a spot for all the way up until the paperwork is faxed in.

      • Drew says:

That’s what I thought, but we’re already pretty full at DB. Already got 3 CB’s and a safety. Counting Cobb ups it to 4 CBs; adding Okudah as well ups it to 5 . . . that’s a lot of schollys on one position.

        • StL Sooner says:

Cobb is technically 2016. I realize it is still a scholly, but its last years class.

        • StL Sooner says:

Cobb is technically 2016. I realize it is still a scholly, but its last years class.

          • Drew says:

True. Just liked our momentum with Okudah, and worried this might drive him (or one of our ’17 Cbs) off.

          • StL Sooner says:

            Sure hope not!

          • cush creekmont says:

No way that young man is scared off by anyone or any number of other guys.

          • T. Rob says:

Let’s not forget tOSU is stacked with ELITE defensive backs. That doesn’t stop his interest in them. If your that good and you know it, your not worried about other players.

          • Drew says:

Fair enough. My biggest concern was losing one of the guys currently committed, but you’re right, he’s a take regardless.

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Exactly. I want those young bulls going against the best. That’s why I can’t wait to see Tyrese go against Big Marv and City Boy Greg! What’s the deal with that stadium that MISD approved? Is it a joint stadium between all the schools or what?

          • Scott says:

That’s right , Okudah ain’t scared of nothin.

          • SamSooner says:

True. You’d think Okudah would have committed before Cobb if he was concerned.

          • DCinAZ says:

Other commits don’t drive players like Okudah off no matter what.

        • Birddawg says:

From what I understand we were down a scholly in the 2016 DB dept and shouldn’t effect any of our guys committed or not committed yet.

        • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

With defenses being almost all ‘sub’ packages, we can never have too many Db’s, IMO.

          • soonerthunder says:

w/o a doubt. and to find two good enough, three in the nickel, and grooming/having someone who c/fill in–priceless. it’s a position that before this year I didn’t think we were loaded at, I was and am still concerned b/c none are proven except thomas and austin who weighs about 100 lbs but is good imo. then johnson who I think could play the cb position very, very well. very impressed with johnson, but sure liked him how they used him last yr also b/c experience at the position, again priceless. hope j parker, etc, etc are all studs but we don’t know until they are thrown into the deep end. . . I think cobb looks like a stud on film in hs. speed very natural. looks good size and physical. really looks good on film and I’m glad we got him

        • Scott says:

Their will be plenty of open spots after this season.

          • Drew says:

I went ahead and checked the roster, and there were a couple of guys I had missed at CB. Total, we’ll have 4 out of our 6 leaving this year (Austin, Thomas, Taylor, and Owens), so you’re right.

      • StL Sooner says:

        *There is / there’s
Since Dustin is not around :>)

    • Jordan Esco says:

Not w/ that they could potentially lose following this season.

And to the point others have already made, Okudah has a spot in this class no matter what.

  • soonerthunder says:

don’t know if cobb would have started or not at baylor this year, however, I’ve got to think that perhaps some of these guys who signed with ou/ut would have started this year. and obviously depth for this year. this is killing baylor. like a probation. and it will hurt this year. injuries happen. the next guy up could have been some of these guys. think once baylor starts losing this year it will/could get very ugly for them this year.

    • StL Sooner says:

Couldn’t agree more. OU has seen first hand how a down recruiting year or two can have a major impact on the field

  • Wick says:

I just have to wonder how much this decision was dictated by the young man’s father. Hope he does well in Norman

  • LandThieve3 says:

Wonder how this affects the SS17 DB’s already committed.

Also, I hope the recruiting drama this young man has been through doesn’t effect his work ethic. Get on campus and keep working hard Mr. Cobb, we’re pulling for you! Boomer!

I have one of those shirts awesome.

    • cush creekmont says:

This year’s TFB Boom shirt needs to have some SS17 on it, right?

    • Sooner Ray says:

      Nice.

    • Jeff says:

Now Quick needs to more back to WR with Todd leaving

  • RBear says:

Does this affect the final recruiting class ranking(s)? Not that it matters but…

    • Sooner Ray says:

I would think every recruit would have some affect on the ranking, be it good or bad.

    • KJ1123 says:

Possibly, but really our ranking for 16 was low…alot lower from 17 so to me its not a huge deal.

  • Birddawg says:

All I care about is if his heart is in it. I have to think Stoops had a serious conversation with him about that and–well, Trust in Stoops.

    • cush creekmont says:

I’ll go with that thought. I hope the young man ends up loving OUr Sooners and becoming a fine member of the team. He’s “one of us” now, a SOONER, so good luck Mr. Cobb and do yourself proud!

    • Super K says:

They spoke to him before he signed

      • RBear says:

so is this an exception to the dead period rule?

      • cush creekmont says:

Good to know. All sides have to be happy. I trust the coaches and Mr. Cobb to be all-in.

        Thanks K for the info.

This reminds me of my senior year. Dated a girl for 8 months, thought she was going to be my prom date then two weeks before prom she dumps me for someone else causing me to settle on a prom date only to then try and get back with me before prom. Let’s just say my prom was awkward and awful. I hope everything works out with Cobb, but time will tell how this plays out. I’m just glad he’s not going to be wearing burnt orange lol.

  • Fear The Magic says:

I thank God above that he didnt make me a Bailor fan.
    Welcome aboard Mr Cobb.

  • SoonerOracle737 says:

    BOOM! Welcome aboard Mr. Cobb.

  • ND52 says:

“Cough” Jordan Thomas are you paying attention at all to this? “Cough”

  • SamSooner says:

I was hoping otherwise, but that’s not what happened. He’s a Sooner. Cobb has my support and I will be rooting for him.

    Welcome, Mr. Cobb.

Okudah, if you’re reading this, I still want you to join SS17. Make it soon, please. Christmas is in two days.

    • cush creekmont says:

While it might take a bit, I believe Mr. Okudah has that OUDNA. I’ll add to Sam – Welcome Mr. Cobb and good luck as a Sooner!

    • cush creekmont says:

Love that SS17 group and their MOXIE. P. Cobb, they will join you in the spring!

      • SamSooner says:

You were throwing out big words this morning. I see you’re still at it: while the word has five letters, “moxie”, is a big word. Not many people know about it or know how to use it. Moxie is the word to best describe SS17.

        Moxie: courage and aggressiveness; nerve.

    • Mysterio1 says:

So now it’s done. Cobb is a Sooner.

  • Scott says:

Hopefully Cobb can be our punt returner and kickoff returner this year , I remember Cobb was the one with the 4.3 speed.

    • Drew says:

His film backs that up pretty well. Only showed KR, but he’s very shifty, and I doubt PR would give him any problems.

      • Scott says:

We need to be a threat in the kickoff return department this year.

        • Drew says:

Yup. While the blocking wasn’t really there last year, you could tell Ross’ heart wasn’t in it. I would expect one of the young RBs to do it, but if Cobb’s really that fast, let him at it.

    • Stephen Dale says:

4.3 ? that’s Duvernay speed and Cobb is not THAT fast. He is , however, a very versatile athlete ( WR, CB, Return specialist )

  • Thomas Lenard says:

If he can field a punt/KO AND he can be taught not to slow down at the 5, I say let him loose on the returns!

  • SamSooner says:

Okay, fellas, which me luck. We’re about to board. Heading back to Ohio.

  • TSFFKAG says:

Thank you Parrish Cobb. I think you will find your decision to be a Win-Win! Welcome home!

  • soonerinks says:

I wish the young man a long and storied career at OU. What happened in the past is in the past and obviously the coaches want him and I am good with that.

  • DCinAZ says:

Ya’ll realize how gotdamn ridiculous our secondary is gonna be for years to come?

    • Scott says:

      RIP Big 12 WR’s.

    • T. Rob says:

Pretty darn good. Hopefully it’ll translate to more DBs going to the league from Norman. That is always a big recruiting tool to sell kids…”We put DBs in the league”.

      • DCinAZ says:

That’s what LSU does. I think we’re getting there. Hopefully!

        • T. Rob says:

Yes it is…and they have the stats to back it up. So if your elite, you want to go where you know the coaches will get you there. That’s why we brought Ty to O-lineU. Plus the fact they win a conference championship within every 4 years. Your pretty much guarantee a ring.

          • DCinAZ says:

You got it. I think we have respect with the NFL in regards to OL. Even if they don’t get drafted, the league is willing to give them a shot in free agency. That’s credibility.
I think we’re getting back to 1st round talent on the Oline personally. The league is already licking their chops over Brown. Samia will get drafted too. Our future revolves around getting quality next-level talent on the Oline. If we’re putting kids in the league every year, we’ll be playing at a high level everywhere else. Everything flows from what you have in the trenches. That’s where the game is won or lost. Always has been.

          • cdzendolet says:

Brown is a damn monster, and we have him for two more years! Lots of time to develop into the best LT in CFB

          • BleedCrimson says:

            Yessir!

          • T. Rob says:

I couldn’t agree any more with your statement.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

With that said, can we get a DT? Where’s the beef?

          • j l says:

He will win at least 2 if he stays 4 years. 9 big 12 titles in 17 years =)

          • DCinAZ says:

Yup. Ty is coming in at the right time.

          • j l says:

its always the right time to be a sooner =) good crop of kids these last few years though, should be the most talent on campus since the early 2000’s.

          • T. Rob says:

With last year’s run and this coming season expected to be great, tell Bama, tOSU, Clemson the boys are back in town. We’re coming for the #1 spot

          • paganpink says:

            Damned straight!

          • T. Rob says:

We know we dominate the big 12, but that isn’t enough. We want it all.

          • paganpink says:

And we do it the RIGHT way. There are bag men all over the SEC bold enough to brag to reporters how it all works with the money going to uncles and cousins and the cars as well not in the players name. The money drops come from a kitty put together from only a few big money donors in separate groups who have areas they cover for the folks back home in sham jobs and such for relatives and doled out a few hundred at a time every week so there’s never big money thrown around to draw unwanted attention, etc. I honestly believe we do not do that at Oklahoma after being burned by stuff like alumni car dealers in the past!

          • SamSooner says:

That should be OU’s mantra: “We want it all.”

      • Indy_sooner says:

Agreed. Most recently, Colvin and TJefferson have made us proud. Not sure if Franks is still tearing it up for the Broncos. Ditto Sanchez

I think he’s just taking a sabatical from these boards. A fast if you will. Kind of like many people do with Facebook. This board can consume to much or your life if you let it. And if it becomes the most important thing, you got trouble. I’m thinking Stephen Dale is long over due for a purge.

    • paganpink says:

I do miss him. I thought people were over reacting when they expressed worry over him not being on here after just a few months because he said he was going to take some time off. But I have to confess that I am getting uneasy myself as the months roll by!

      • paganpink says:

he would be perfect with that amazing acceleration he has from a stop!

      • Mark_in_VA says:

That’ll only matter if we stop with the 10-man fake-punt-watch every punt!

As the OB proved, we aren’t gaining a dang thing from that formation anyway.

    • paganpink says:

His acceleration is wicked! He has a stop move that freezes defenses for a moment and then he just outruns everybody within seconds when he takes off again.

Welcome young Mr Cobb. I know it’s been a rocky road but, to paraphrase the Rolling Stones, sometimes we don’t get what we want but we do get what we need. I think you will like it at Oklahoma. Any chance Cobb plays on offense?

    • Slim Sooner says:

I’m sure no expert, but watching his film I’d think so even though they’re his highlights only. He looked pretty good at RB, receiver and DB didn’t you think? I’m not knowledgeable enough to really compare or analyze a kid to what we already have or what’s coming in ’17.

      • SoonerOracle737 says:

He seemed to have good moves with the ball in his hands. Also read the blockers pretty well. I dunno.

  • BigJoeBrown says:

Wow, nice pick up. I’ll admit I didn’t see this one coming.

  • DR LEO MARVIN says:

    Cobb is my homeboy FOOTBALL—————-

  • SamSooner says:

Cobb looks good on film; he definitely has world class speed. But I have to tell you, having watched film on Cobb and Bandy, Bandy looks more polished to me. In my opinion, Bandy could challenge for playing time today and he hasn’t graduated high school.

Bandy is farther along, if you ask me. If I was playing CB at OU, I’d be working on my game.

TFB Mods, what are your thoughts?

    • Boom says:

Bandy will play NB which will fit his skills better. Cobb is good but no matter who, they always need work on their technique. Cobb will put his mind to OU and be an asset for the next 4 years.

      • SamSooner says:

        Good morning, Boom.

I think Bandy is a true CB.

        • Boom says:

Maybe so but the coaches are recruiting him for the NB position per K. No matter where he plays, we are both fans of his.
I realize you’re not a fan of Cobb but I have always been a fan. If Cook & staff likes him, it’s all good with me.

        • Tex'ish says:

Good observations Sam n Boom. Very exciting to see us loading up in the D backfield! Happy 4th!

          • SamSooner says:

Afternoon, Tex’ish. Sorry for the delay in response. I was dressing up/rubbing down 12 racks of ribs.

It’s just my opinion, but I think Bandy is farther along in cover skills. He’s damn good.

    • Scott says:

My thoughts are that Cobb will be a multi tool for OU. He will return punts and kickoff return , I can see Cobb running the jet sweep on offense for us since he has that 4.3 speed.

    • Slim Sooner says:
