Open Post | Weekend, Jan. 22nd – 24th (UPDATE Sun., 12:57 pm)

Patrick Hudson: In case you missed it, Thursday night TFB was able to confirm an initial report by Rivals that Baylor OL commit Patrick Hudson (Silsbee, TX) will be visiting Oklahoma. I spoke with someone close to Hudson who said the exact date hadn’t been set, but one of the coaches over at Silsbee told me he’s planning a trip elsewhere on the final weekend prior to NSD. So one would assume the trip to Norman will be a mid-week visit.

Hudson has strong ties to Baylor as his h.s. head coach was roommates with Art Briles at Houston. Additionally, Hudson’s twin sister is expected (though I’ve been told things could change) to attend Baylor and participate on the track team. In talking to one of Hudson’s coaches, they mentioned that Baylor and Silsbee run the exact same offense so Hudson is already comfortable in that regard as well.

Having said that, Hudson hasn’t been out much in terms of visits. He recently took a trip to Texas, which I’m told through his coach Hudson said was “eye-opening.” I think in a way taking that trip showed him there is more out there than just one school. Hudson is planning a trip to Georgia this weekend and next weekend I’m told he will take a trip to either TAMU or Arkansas (following what we presume will be his mid-week trip to OU). One of Hudson’s coaches also mentioned there has been no pressure from the Silsbee head coach to attend Baylor.

It seems like an uphill battle for the Sooners at this point, but from what I hear Hudson is a smart guy who marches to the beat of his own drum. If he likes a place, I don’t get the sense he’s going to be swayed by anyone or anything from going there. – (Super K)

Velus Jones: Earlier this week the Sooners did an in-home visit with their primary 2016 WR target Velus Jones (Saraland, AL). Unfortunately, Jones and his coach have gone mostly silent on us since then. Which certainly isn’t always an indicator of things, but often can be a sign not in the favor of those you’re asking about.

Last night there was a report by 247 Sports’ Ryan Bartow that stated Velus is expected to announce he is reaffirming his commitment to USC in the next day or two. We haven’t been able to confirm that report, but we have no reason to doubt it at this point.

If true, this would be a bit of a blow as Jones had emerged as the top remaining wide receiver target for the Sooners in this 2016 class. And was even expected to commit to Oklahoma a couple weeks back before later postponing his announcement. Additionally, at one point Velus had been pretty open with us about wanting to end up in Norman, in part, because his uncle lives near campus and even accompanied Velus on his official visit to OU. – (Super K)

Clifford Chattman: Earlier this week I spoke with one of the coaches over at McDonogh 35 High School in New Orleans about 2016 ATH Clifford Chattman, who was being recruited by Oklahoma but had mentioned to me recently he hadn’t heard much from the OU coaches. Chattman’s coach did say, however, that he expects Oklahoma to visit in the next week.

I also spoke to a source on the Oklahoma side of things and was told there is definitely still interest on OU’s part. However, Florida State has been pushing pretty hard lately for Chattman. The FSU coaches have already done their in-home visit with him, and Chattman will take an official visit to Tallahasee this weekend. So if the Sooners really want him, they’ll probably need to strengthen the lines of communication with Chattman directly. – (Super K)

– Parrish Cobb: There are now multiple reports out Friday morning that 2016 OU cornerback commit Parrish Cobb is unlikely to be in Austin this weekend after several reports earlier in the week indicated he would be. Doesn’t mean there won’t still be a trip at some point prior to NSD, but at the very least this is encouraging news for OU fans (for now). – (TFB)

Team Note | Explosive Newcomers: All this week OU has been doing testing (40s, shuttles, broad jump, etc.) with those members of the football team already on campus. I spoke with a source who mentioned OU early enrollees; safety Chanse Sylvie and Penn State grad transfer WR Geno Lewis participated in the broad jump testing yesterday. The source described both Sylvie & Lewis as “freaks.”

Apparently Lewis had a 10’6 broad jump and Sylvie jumped a 10’3. Those are good numbers! They show a lot of explosion in the hips. – (Super K)

– UPDATE Fri., (9:32 am):

– UPDATE (Fri., 11:08 am):

– UPDATE (Fri., 11:11 am):

PARRISH COBB UPDATE (11:20 am): Just got off the phone with Parrish Cobb’s father. I did ask him whether they would be visiting Texas this weekend (Cobb’s HC had told me earlier this morning that he would be). Cobb’s father said, “Last minute we’ve decided not to go to Texas this weekend.” I also asked if there was a possibility they would visit Austin next weekend, and he would not rule it out.

He added, “so many coaches are coming by the school and it’s just a lot to take in…I’m trying to give Parrish space to figure out what he wants to do.” Cobb’s father indicated that Oklahoma and Texas are certainly two schools under consideration to win Cobb’s signature on signing day, and when I asked if those were the only two schools they are considering he said, “I can’t promise you that.”

Cobb’s father summarized the remainder of the process for his son by saying they will think things through this week, decide if they will visit Texas next weekend, and then make a final decision on or just before NSD. So while Cobb is committed to Oklahoma it seems there is no question that he is torn between at least OU and Texas. – (Super K)

– UPDATE (Fri., 12:05 pm): I was able to catch up with Jared Mayden just a little bit ago who is coming up to Norman for an official visit later today. The talented cornerback let me know he is heading up today at 3:30pm CST. This will be a big weekend for the Sooners being able to get one of the top corner prospects in the country back on campus after they looked completely out of the picture when he committed to Oregon this past summer.

One thing we were wondering is if Mayden could possibly pull the trigger this weekend. And while we have not been told that won’t happen he did let me know that even if he was to commit anywhere before National Signing Day it would be done silently and announced on February 3. Mayden let me know he is coming up with his mom, brother, Jalen Mayden a 2018 QB that OU is recruiting, 2017 LB Riko Jeffers & 2018 WR Drue Jackson.

Jeffers (6’1″ 228-pounds, VIDEO) is a prospect that I like on film. Looks comfortable in space, closes in a hurry, has sideline to sideline speed and is a physical tackler, exactly the kind of traits that you need at LB in the Big 12. Jeffers looks like a guy to keep your eye on moving forward. – (Alex)

– UPDATE (Fri., 12:48 pm): #boom.

– UPDATE (Fri., 6:28 pm): #boom No. 2

– UPDATE (Sat., 9:40 am):

UPDATE (Saturday, 3:37 pm): LBs Emmanuel Beal and PJ Blue are in the house. Sooners clearly going after some taller, longer guys.

– UPDATE (Sat., 7:50 pm): Now former Sooners commit & 2016 LB Pernell Jefferson makes official what many had been expecting for some time.

– UPDATE (Sat., 7:53 pm): As most of you are now aware, QB Cody Thomas has again left the football team to focus on playing baseball full-time, as first reported by SoonerScoop.com.

– UPDATE (Sun., 12:51 pm): Official statement from OU regarding Thomas focusing on baseball.

– UPDATE (Sun., 12:57 pm): Kind of had to figure this was coming after K’s OP update from earlier in the week. Best of luck to the young man in Tallahassee.

    Let’s close strong

  • Lincoln Hawk says:

Rough year for WR recruiting, which is odd since we run the spread. Maybe just focusing on 2017 class?

    • Brian says:

That’s what I’m starting to wonder. We missed on the elite in 2016…maybe just going after the 2017 elite guys

      • Birddawg says:

We are stacked at WR. 12 scholly WRs strong. Nice mix too
I will be worried if we miss out next year.
        Charleston Rambo come on down.

      • Spitting Bull says:

It kind of makes sense with all the depth we have at the position right now. I’m thinking a few of these guys are going to make a big splash this year. They have to.

    • Martin says:

In the past 2-3 weeks, OU has gone from grabbing two more likely WR commits to zero. After the Clemson loss, I honestly think the staff must have re-evaluated the need for any more WRs in this class and put out the vibe to the remaining 2016 WR targets. I think Bob is just about DE/LB/DB until signing day.

Its a big departure from the “Tommy Boy” mission that Riley & Gundy were on in the final days of recruiting last year.

    • Furr-Sure says:

2017 has several elite WR’s OU has made great in-roads with. Rambo comes to mind

  • Atlantasooner says:

Top 30 kids in Texas next year, 10 WRs. I’d shut things down save the ships.

  • SoonerMagic76 says:

Good to hear the good news about Cobb – hope it stays that way.

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

They have a great class already in the secondary, add Mayden with who they’ve got and call it a day.

  • SoonerMagic76 says:

The Jones news was unfortunately written on the wall with no news from him after the visit. Hope we can change things, but it’s not looking promising.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

Thanks guys, I kinda think the coaches know who they have and what they are working with. I know they’ve missed on a few guys, but this class might be a special group with all the talent on D they are bringing in. Get Kelly, and a couple others to go with what they brought in last year up front and Bob might just have his best D since 2008 or even farther back, in the very near future.

  • cush creekmont says:

Is a re-set with Chattman a V Jones response? Like many, I don’t understand why we cannot secure tip-top WR talent with our current offense.

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

First year WR coaches, yes even Cale is new at the position. I bet it’s better next year when they have more time with the 2017 guys. Recruiting is a 2-3 year game now.

      • Spitting Bull says:

I think it’s the depth at the position. If he doesn’t go with us lets see what his destination school has to compete against. Kid might just want to play next year and play a lot. Probably not as easy to see that at OU. It seems like only a very few frosh start for us at wr. Only the very best.

      • Birddawg says:

Cale is one of the best position coaches in all of CFB.
        Its the depth/opportunity.

    • MrBigsby says:

I think it has to do with they way we spread the ball around. Today’s prima donnas want to be THE guy and the focal point of the offense. It’s not a team game to them.

  • cush creekmont says:

Is a re-set with Chattman a V Jones response? Like many, I don’t understand why we cannot secure tip-top WR talent with our current offense.

  • Sooner Scoop says:

Is it a recruiting violation if you send strippers to a recruits home?

  • MikeyBoom says:

Great post guys. Doubt Hudson goes anywhere but Baylor. Btw, if anyone’s interested I got the ut fans all riled up on their TFB website. Its so funny how upset they can get. haha thought I would give it a try and my god did it work . haha yesterdays OP if you want to see it

  • Mizuno44 says:

It’s easy to forget guys already on campus who have been developing at WR and DL, plus we’ve added some juco players and Geno Lewis who will be ready to compete and/or contribute. Watching this recruiting cycle has been frustrating, but it seems our emphasis is really focused on 2017.

  • Eddie and Amber says:

Always a little stressful during the 4th quarter of recruiting season. Does anyone know anything about Ryan Parker? Is he eligible, etc.? Wasn’t he suppose too be an early enrollee?

Secondly, I don’t get it. USC has 4 other top WR recruits committed. All rated higher than Jones. Why?

    • Jordan Esco says:

He was, but his grades weren’t in order to enroll early. Never a good sign, but def not at the point you write him off either.

    • Malicong says:

Not only that, they have two of the best returning WR’s next year as well. At best he will get one year of decent production at USC and that is only if the other guys don’t pan out and Smith and Jackson leave early for the draft.

  • Bill Holder says:

I’m starting to think our fans are sounding more like osu fans every day after reading all of the “wait til next year” comments in regards to recruiting. Next year is always greener pastures when it comes to top of the line receivers. Just admit, this group are not closers on the recruiting trail. Moving Cale, our #1 guy to receiver didn’t help.

    • Eddie and Amber says:

Cale has not even had a full year to recruit WR position. Do you really think he just forgot how to evaluate and recruit?

Still a lot can happen between now and signing day. This post may or may not make more sense then.

      • Bill Holder says:

I say it was a mistake to move Cale there and will stick by it til I see different results.

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

      Thank yOU for that

    • Mizuno44 says:

I actually think of OSU every time I see or hear the name Holder

    • Cory Pedersen says:

I will agree that it’s disappointing that we haven’t been able to close, it seems…. However, it’s true that we have talent already at school, we didn’t have a lot in terms of numbers to replace. But I’m also with you, thinking towards the “next year” mentality… 2017 will have to be a big year because we will lose even more. Having Geno Lewis come in is great, but he’s one and done anyway..

      • Bill Holder says:

All but one of the receivers we currently have on campus have had a chance to play and either can’t catch the ball or can’t get separation. It’s a weakness we have dealt with for some time that doesn’t appear to be getting better.

    • Indy_sooner says:

I agree we haven’t been blazing trails on WR recruiting but we haven’t exactly been putting elite WR talent in the league. It’s really hard to close the deal on Elite WRs w/o putting guys in a position of success regardless of who you are. I say you cut the guy some slack, it’s only been 1 year into the switch on WR coaches yet production from the guys on the field has been night and day from 2014

  • Eric Hutton says:

I already love Sylvie. Seems to have great character and wants to do everything he can for the University.

  • Jordan Esco says:

    downdate added

    • Defend Colfax says:

It’s not much of anything. Why bother?

      • Jordan Esco says:

        How so?

Very similar situation to Daniels, IMO. He visited & was committed to OU, then obv wound up decommitting.

Now I’m not saying the same will happen w/ Cobb, but him visiting (again, assuming it does in fact happen) elsewhere this late in the game definitely isn’t a good thing.

        • Kelly Gurbcock says:

Mayden is of the highest priority. Cooks is a helluva recruiter I just can’t see the appeal of a 4 win UTerus team. Shocked we might lose this one.

          • Jake says:

Austin is a city with a lot of allure. Much to do, lots of “hipsters”, etc.

The glamour of the big city is a massive distraction from how lousy the football program is. They know if they can get you there on campus, they can make you forget!

            Welcome to Austin….

          • metzker says:

Worked down there for a year and a half building san marcos high school stadium etc. No thanks but man the girls that float the river———– O my.

          • Jake says:

Will make a young man reassess his priorities, eh?

          • metzker says:

            O yea!

        • Defend Colfax says:

It was confirmed that he’s been an OU commit for a while and it was confirmed that he was visiting Texas. Don’t bring me down for no reason, let me finish my coffee.

        • Fear The Magic says:

Cobb to me would be a much bigger loss than Daniels IMO.
He has all the look of a 5 star DB. I was happy to read the initial report that he cancelled but then saw the downdate….ugh.

    • Mizuno44 says:

Interesting response from Cobb, isn’t that what Daniels said too?

    • cush creekmont says:

Well, sort of down…Don’t know the HS coach enough to guess if his comment is valid.

  • MrBigsby says:

Sorry, but you can’t be “committed to OU” and be visiting Texas. He may eventually sign with OU, but right now I wouldn’t count him as a commit and someone else takes his spot, so be it.

  • metzker says:

UMMMM Guys the open post is up and BOOMEERRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Sooner Magic says:

I love how Stoops runs the program, he does a fantastic job, but when it comes to recruiting there needs to be a major overhaul in this area. Kids these days want different things than what our coaches are promoting and doing on the recruiting trail. I’m not saying do anything against the rules or things that hurt the integrity of our program. I just wish they would get with the times. Look at Harbaugh, he’s recruiting to Michigan that is a lot colder and a terrible team when he got there and he’s got a top class. He climbed a tree for a recruit and that’s embarrassing. I think Stoops and company need to get out of there comfort zone a little if they ever want to land big time recruits. Barry needs to go on the recruiting trail with Stoops and company for a few weeks and show them how its done, legally of course.

    • Maverick says:

Please don’t want Stoops to be more like Harbaugh. That’s insulting. Harbaugh is just new at UM and they’ve been a sleeping giant. They’re the Texas of the midwest. Change tactics, fine, but don’t be more like Harbaugh!

      • Sooner Magic says:

Not at all. I don’t want Stoops to change who he is, he’s a great person. Just change his techniques and things he’s telling these young guys to sway them more in his favor.

    • BigJoeBrown says:

Can you see Swtizer going on the recruiting trail with Stoops? That would be epic, like a reality show.

      • Sooner Magic says:

That would definitely be a show I would watch, lol. Switzer has a way with people and I do think Stoops should pick his brain every chance he got.

    • Fear The Magic says:

I think if B Stoops starts wearing a fur coat ala Barry that would do the trick.

      • Sooner Magic says:

He should start driving a ferrari and sleep in it over night outside at the recruit’s house like Barry did, lol

        • Rick says:

If I rem right Bob drives Jags, not sure but I think so. Probably not as blingy to a recruit as a ferrari would be. Maybe one of the $98/hr spammers on this site could load Bob one of the their McLarens.

    • Bill Holder says:

That would be a sight to see……Bob climbing a tree.

  • Maverick says:

I have to believe that when Gundy starts getting in the groove, WR talent will be great. He’s always been our best recruiter. Just hasn’t clicked yet. Maybe he’s a bit too spread out as recruiting coordinator? Or did they hire a different guy for that?

    • Jake says:

I agree. Right now, his pitch is like… “You know Adrian Peterson & Demarco Murray”? Well I coached them and yOU can be the next elite Running Ba….I mean, WR at OU! LOL

    • Rick says:

I don’t know if enough data is in to make a qualified judgement one way or another on his capability of keeping up with his newer responsibilities, (there is always a “but” after the comma) but, what I have seen of Gundy, I really like, and from what I read his players saying he is da bomb. There is an old business axiom (this is paraphrased), that everyone aspires to their level of competency. A janitor who is qualified to be CEO is not as productive as he could be given the right opportunity, and the reverse is also true. I think Gundy is probably HC material, its kinda exciting watching him work and interact with the kids, I think he “gets it”. If he is overworked in the situation, lets get him the help he needs. Good thoughts Mav!

  • Tipman says:

Any backup WR plan in case Velus doesnt work out?

  • Jake says:

Welcome to Austin, Mr. Cobb! Come right in this room, your buddy Chris Daniels “saw the light” of how great our football program is. So can you!

  • Eric Hutton says:

All people on twitter need to take a look at kurtkizz @investment_co This guy is a major troll to alot of OU recruits and currently has Velus Jones going. let this troll know whats up Sooner nation.

  • @DallasSooner says:

That loss in the Cotton Bowl in October still echoes. Man how did we let that happen?

  • Indy_sooner says:

Folks were complaining when we were landing alot of elite skill players. When we reload and shift to beef up on the lines, the same people complain about not landing enough of said skill players….smh

  • Cam says:

3* RB Brandon Stephens (Plano,TX) re-opened his recruitment. He was committed to Stanford. Didn’t we want him at one point?

    • Jordan Esco says:

They did, but from what I’ve seen this a.m. he decommitted b/c Bama has shown some real interest.

  • Kevin Moore says:

What’s the scoop on 4 star OL recruit Erik Swenson who was recently snubbed by Michigan? Any chance OU would take a flyer at him?

    • Tipman says:

Someone said Coach B followed him on twitter after he decommitted. So that means we’re 100% going to get him

    • Malicong says:

I wondered the same thing. Have read he prefers to stay in the B1G geographic area and he likes the academics at certain schools. Northwestern is really pushing for him. Would be a nice get IMO.

Quick has shown flashes but once he got out of the doghouse I don’t know why he didn’t see the field more.

      • Randy says:

Yeah.. Also I think and you would believe that M Andrews would be on the field A LOT more in ’16. So Westbrook, Baxter, Lewis and Andrews would be the primary tagets with Perine and Mixon (also at WR some) in there.

        • Bob Edwards says:

If what Stoops said is true, we should see a lot more of Andrews. He was basically playing in the same slot (pun intended) as Shepherd and we weren’t taking reps from Shep.

    • Brian says:

Definitely need Velus Jones – Hope we can pull off a last minute upset! Looks like we need at least one more inside/slot type

          • Mr. Jones says:

Yeah definitely higher ceilings and they may even be better than Wade and Romar coming out of the Spring. I’m all for getting them on the field at the same time.

    • Dallas Johnson says:

it would also be pretty cool to get a breakdown of guys we have.. and underclassmen we have not seen and what you think our line will look like for this year.. and who the up and commers will be. 🙂 thanks JY for all you do love reading your post!

    • Sooner Ray says:

Happy Friday JY, and I have had a shower today so I’m only an animal.

  • Matt says:

Does anyone else think that Cale is the best option to take over at OC after Riley bolts for a head job? He would stick around forever and could still run Riley’s offense. Riley will be gone within a year or two.

    • Jake says:

Something tells me that Riley is being set up as the heir-apparent if he’s willing to hang around for a few more years and continue to prove his worth.

    • Bob Edwards says:

What’s not clear is his play calling ability. It would be attractive for the reasons you mention, but some people are good position coaches but have a hard time transitioning to play calling. Heupel comes to mind.

    • Collin says:

I think that would be a logical assumption, but I just don’t see OU doing it. It will be interesting to see what exactly is the plan in place for Riley.

    • Maverick says:

I’m not sure he wants it. Has to be a reason he hasn’t taken it yet.

    • JD says:

Im sure its def possible and Bob and Cale both have talked about Cales future at OU. Cale could be happy where he is. Only Bob, Cale and a few others really know

      • Bob Edwards says:

There is some reason to believe this may be true. The guy that recruited both Adrian Peterson and Demarco Murray to OU should have been able to get a small school OC job if he wanted one. I think Cale has other priorities, however if he could stay at OU he might be interested in going that route.

        • JD says:

Yeah Id bet money that they have talked about his ambitions. I would like him back at rb coach though. Let Jay concentrate on STs because it def slacked off from the year before and Im talking return team blocking mainly

    • Tim A says:

I think he would be great option. He is very much committed to OU and I think here for long-term. I hope he can ‘learn’ as much as he can before LR leaves (which I am not looking forward to but know will eventually happen – unless Bob is ready to go then too 🙂

    • Malicong says:

I’ve always thought Cale is holding out for HC when Bob retires.

    • Bob Edwards says:

One of the things I wonder about is why didn’t he get the job before Heupel? After all, he was here coaching when Josh was a player. Seems like he would have gotten a shot if he had wanted it.

  • Jason Vos says:

2 receivers that will step up big this year imo Michiah Quick & Jefferey Mead

  • Collin says:

You think Bob is sweating over the Chris Daniels non-sense? Yeah me neither.

    • Maverick says:

Stoops? Nah. He’s been here to long to lose sleep over it I bet. Maybe if it was at a thinner position.

    • Mizuno44 says:

Nice visual, and I don’t think anyone is sweating either. In fact, your illustration was probably utilized by those who helped change Daniels mind.

      • Collin says:

That’s a great point. If I’m a young buck wanting to come in and start this tells me I’ve got a lot of work ahead.

    • Jason Vos says:

One player does not make a program. Bob Stoops has been there many times. Just last year it was Lampkin

    • Brian says:

To play devil’s advocate though, I only see two guys of comparable size to Daniels. Orso and Lampkin.

      • Collin says:

Fair enough. But, Romar doesn’t pass the eye test and he made huge impact on the field for us this year.

  • Maverick says:

How many times a day do we think OU coaches read the OP’s? Hopefully not the comments. I sometimes get the feeling TFB try to drop some subtle hints like, “now would be a really good time to call this guy!”.

  • Maverick says:

Life’s not fair. These headcoaches follow 16-17 year old boys on Twitter and everything’s cool. I follow the local hs volleyball team around the parking lot and all of a sudden I’m a “creep” and a “weirdo”.

    Double standards.

    Emmanuel Beal – OU
    Max Tupai – OU
    Marcell Southall – OU

        • Kelly Gurbcock says:

I thought the same with Daniels, especially after seeing him wear that Boom shirt. Strong is passing out good drugs and coeds down there, taking a page from the ole mi$$ book.

    • Mizuno44 says:

Agree with all but getting Southall, and think we’ll land J Williams

    • JD says:

      This is the 16 class

    • Maverick says:

    • Mr. Jones says:

      Mark Jackson – OU
      Brandon Bowen – Baylor

    • Eddie and Amber says:

Not sure about that Beal offer. His CC numbers are mediocre at best.

    • Fear The Magic says:

      Tupai – USC

    • Jpsooner23 says:

      don’t forget guidry

    • Bob Edwards says:

That would be a really strong finish to the 2015 class. That would also free up some room for 2016 since that is what we are working on right now. 🙂

      • Jason Vos says:

        huh?

      • RocketCitySooner says:

You at work? Weather doesn’t look too good for the afternoon commute.

        • Bob Edwards says:

Yeah, I’m planning on packing up the laptop and heading home. Though I’ve seen everything from 3-4 inches predicted to an 80% chance of less than an inch of snow. Still Alabama drivers and icy conditions are a terrible mixture.

          • RocketCitySooner says:

Nothing like Alabama drivers and Cathedral Caverns Hwy. It was those trips up/down Grant Mountain that bothered me. BTW. was in Grant yesterday. We still use the Grant Animal Clinic.

          • Bob Edwards says:

Yeah, that road is great in the dark in the rain. /s

Grant Animal Clinic is great. When we lived in Owens Cross Roads we started taking our dogs to a vet in Hampton Cove. Never got out under $200. When our Golden Retriever was diagnosed with allergies they wanted to send her to Auburn for testing at like $1000. We decided to get another opinion in Grant. They suggested over the counter benadryl. Said she might sleep a bit more. So she slept 23 1/2 hours a day instead of 23. Really good folks.

          • RocketCitySooner says:

I would hate to see what our bill would be in Hampton Cove. Ginger is a 165 pound Great Dane with issues. We rescued her from the pound. She was in such bad shape she probably wouldn’t lived another 48 hours. She’s about seven years old and developing all the old age symptoms. Danes rarely live past eight. Very expensive even in Grant.

          • BamaSooner#12! says:

We’re in Owens Cross Roads. Both you guys like our Facebook page OU Sooner Fans in Alabama. Our tribe is small here in northern Alabama but we get together and watch games throughout the season.

          • BamaSooner#12! says:

            Will do.

    • soonerborn says:

Unless the coaches know of some other departures, you have a few too many names listed. My last count we could only take about 6 or 7.

  • Matt says:

rewatching the first drive of the Orange Bowl…makes me sick..why?! did we get away from the run game and go back to the pre-Texas offense??

    • Maverick says:

I know it’s painful. But they were better than us. Did you see their DL vs our OL? Easy to second guess, but the outcome would’ve been the same friend.

      • Matt says:

They took over when they knew when we were going to throw every down. Run game wears D-lines down. Tennessee game is absolute proof of that. We still might have lost but it wouldn’t have been a blowout.

        • Maverick says:

          Agree to disagree brother.

          • Matt says:

fair enough, I’m just still salty over this one for multiple reasons. The biggest being all the trash their fans and players talked even AFTER the game.

        • SoonerfanTU says:

You can’t do the Tenn game plan against a good offense. Why? Because we can’t count on what we score in the 4th quarter being enough, and we can’t put our defense in bad spots. Tenn offense wasn’t very good. Clemson offense was.

I thought Clemson did a better job of shutting down the run after the 1st drive. I also thought both OU running backs looked slower as the game went on, which we later found out was due to injury. I wonder if the plan wasn’t to limit their carries that game to begin with, given their health.

        • cpearc00 says:

Hard to run when your O-line is getting dominated.

          • Matt says:

again, if they would’ve run more often, the domination might not have been as bad

          • cpearc00 says:

To each his own I suppose. I’m no expert, but to me it seems much harder to run than to pass when your O-line is getting whooped like ours was. Quick slant passes are much easier than trying to make holes in that D-line.

      • Kelly Gurbcock says:

as much as i hate to agree with some loser named maverick (jk btw mav), he’s right. Our o-line got whooped. Starting 3 frosh will do that to you. Also the fact that Darlington (as much as I love the guy) was over matched a lot of times.

      • JD says:

Going with three freshmen on the line didn’t help and that trick punt was a momentum changer that we couldn’t recover from

      • diablodejalisco says:

i don’t know. we won the first half. we need to learn to win the second half too. i think we were not playing to win. we were not attacking and we were playing safe. that never seems to work out well.

    • albsooner says:

And apparently we wanted to ignore the QB’s best friend…a TE

      • albsooner says:

As Mav stated…probably doesn’t change the eventual outcome, but interesting to ponder.

      • Maverick says:

We actually ran that unbalanced line, rollout to a TE, our only “trick play” early to some success. Just didn’t score on it.

  • Maverick says:

Flying in from Denver to OKC this afternoon. Big United hub, what recruits should I be on the lookout for?

  • BigJoeBrown says:

Curious about what players will be able to step up and compete size wise. What i mean is do remember after the Clemson game TFB/Super K spoke about the need to recruit guy’s with size and speed. You want guy’s with heart and toughness but when the guy across the line has heart and toughness plus he is 1st or 2nd round draft pick, the guy across the line is going to win more battles in the end.

    • Mizuno44 says:

It’s an interesting point, and one that another TFB poster (expertise in Health, Nutrition, Strength & Conditioning) responded to very well several weeks ago. He pointed out most of these kids don’t show up on campus as an Adonis, that perhaps there are better strength and conditioning coaches out there who are ripping these guys up. He was eluding to Schmitty, and if our Strength & Conditioning strategy needs to be evaluated and/or upgraded.

    • JD says:

We got beat on the Oline (OUrs). So imo that is the guys that need to step up. Dline wasn’t that bad, we played a good qb that could get outside and was slippery in space. Scheming should fix that

  • SamSooner says:

When I was a kid growing up in Southwest Georgia, we had it bad. We were poor. I mean really poor. We could not wear shoes if we weren’t going to school or church. It was our only choice in order to get as much wear as possible from our meager possessions.

Back in those days, you lived off the land and other people kindness. My older brothers helped farmers, so it wasn’t uncommon for them to give us peas, beans, squash, corn, peanuts, melons, eggs, and sometimes pork or beef.

Winters were especially brutal: nature’s resources were all but gone with exception of sweet potatoes and greens.

We lived in a house with a rusting tin roof. There were holes in the roof and holes in the floor. Evictions were common and there wasn’t a legal process that protected you from being evicted upon notice. My Mom managed to keep us in good graces and we avoided that fate, despite being months in arrears.

My mother stood 5’1″. She had a third grade education. She didn’t have book smarts but she was wise. Despite her small stature, she was an imposing woman. She was phenomenal person that made you recognize her presence.

My attendance in school was outstanding, as that was the determining factor of whether or not I got two meals as opposed to one. Some days the threat of of not eating was real. However, I had faith in my mother. I knew their would be food on the table at the end of the day. She would find a way even if it meant borrowing money from someone she already owed.

Here’s my point: my past is the present situation for some people today. That’s the real crisis, not a 17 year-old kid’s decision. No matter what that kids decides, my past experiences have taught me that I will survive. OU will survive.

So, come on February 3, 2016. Let’s get this over with because no matter what happens, we will all survive.

    • Mike Reed says:

Good story Sam. The reality of what true priorities are in life can be humbling. A young kid making his decision on what college he wants to attend is not that important.

      • SamSooner says:

So true. We are worried about the wrong thing. As for OU, there are enough quality resources/player on the team to keep plugging along. I’m worried about the happiness and well-being of my family. That’s the only thing that is going to get me worked up.

    • SoonerOracle737 says:

      Amen Brother Sam.

    • Mizuno44 says:

My bet is you’re an amazing person to those around you in real life, and most likely touched many lives. Keep paying it forward Brother and shining His Grace.

      • SamSooner says:

Mizzuno, thanks. I try to be kind to everyone. I give everyone the benefit of doubt. What I’ve learned is if you fall get up as quickly as possible. Get on with it. I try to encourage others and stand up for those who can’t defend or care for themselves. I’ve had it hard. If a teenager chooses to commit to OU or not, that isn’t hard.

    • Bill Holder says:

Sam, like you I grew up poor but had a father who instilled in me the importance of commitment. If I couldn’t be somewhere, or do what I said I would do I had to be a man and tell the other person why and apologize. Some kids today are in similar situations but with no one to guide their thinking or choice making. They have he opportunity set before them to make a different life for themselves. They need coaches with good values to help them and shoot straight with them about what commitment means.

      • SamSooner says:

You’re right: accountability is important. All I’m saying who doesn’t sign with OU isn’t the end.

    • soonersd says:

Thanks for sharing your story SamSooner, much appreciated. Stories like yours help us all keep things in perspective.

    • Scott says:

Thank you Sam for sharing that story.

      • SamSooner says:

        Anytime, Scott.
Like a lot of people, I’ve had some hard challenges. I have a pretty good historical baseline that tells me if I’m at critical mass or not. LOL!

    • Lincoln Hawk says:

I couldn’t help but think about the movie about Dolly Parton’s childhood that was on TV not too long ago. I think it was called “Coat of Many Colors”. Was a great movie if you get a chance to watch it.

    • Bob Edwards says:

One of the things that keeps recruiting in perspective is to remember the orphanages my adopted children come from. When you step back a bit, it’s just not that important.

      • SamSooner says:

Bob, you are one of the people, and there are a lot, I admire and respect. You’re a good man for opening your doors to those less fortunate.

        • Bob Edwards says:

Thanks Sam, but there is only One who is good. I am, at best, a most unprofitable servant doing what his master commands.

      • Lincoln Hawk says:

I’ve been thinking/praying about adopting ever since I went on a trip to Haiti. I applaud you for taking in a less fortunate child and giving them hope and a better life.

        • Bob Edwards says:

Adopting is both the hardest and the most profitable thing we have ever done. If you decide to go down that route, feel free to contact me and I’ll help in what way I can. It’s been more than a decade since our last adoption, but we still might know a thing or two of value on the journey.

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

Bob, I really appreciate it. It’s coincidental because I just asked my wife to start praying about it this morning. If we feel led to go forward with it I will definitely be contacting you, I have no doubts that it will be one of the hardest but most enjoyable things of our lives.

          • Stephen Dale says:

unless whomever you adopt from Haiti kills you and your wife late some night. Adoption means YOU inherit their problems /upbringing/ physical & mental issues….. …contributing to an orphanage would be safer and the child wouldn’t be uprooted –feed em and leave em there and much more economical for you—-and you still get the ‘warm fuzzies’ for helping a person. Lots of people do this instead of adopting.

          • Stephen Dale says:

By the same token, there are kids in this country that need help and could use a home. The OKC tv stations show them nightly….save a lot of paperwork with immigration officials.

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

From what I understand it is very difficult to adopt from Haiti, their officials want to keep their people living in poverty. TBH, I am way more worried about you killing my wife and me in my sleep than I would be my children, however I do have some defense mechanisms in place to make that very difficult. I hope you have a wonderful day and Boomer Sooner SD!!!

          • Gladdman says:

WE have adopted 2 boys thru OK DHS. Would be happy to answer any questions.

      • soonerbred4ever says:

My son and his wife adopted a brother and sister from DHS a year ago last December. They are an absolute joy to be around and are so grateful for everything you do for them.

      • SoonerOracle737 says:

While adopting children is of immense importance, let’s not forget about our furry friends who need adoption too. We have rescued two little doggies who were in dire circumstances and they have been eternally grateful to us, as we are to them. The world can be a cruel place for the unfortunate few who don’t deserve the life others cast upon them.

  • Cedarsooner says:

One time I’d like to hear the parent say ” you know all this attention is fun and very humbling but my son committed to OU(insert any college) a few months ago and we know the coaches are counting on that commitment and planning around him being there and that is what we are doing. Thanks for all the love from all these great universities but my son is not interested in any other school.”

    • Dick Bump says:

That’s a good point. It’s not so much losing a player that you really are excited about, it’s about screwing up the process and losing the work the school has put onto that recruitment, especially at the end when there’s little time to repair the damage. OU will have good players and all but a few will have great characters. Recruits need to do what they think is best for themselves and their future, but I hate to see them screw the school when they change their mind in the last days. An early signing date would help.

    • Daryl says:

I agree with you but if you feel that way then we need to say the same thing about coaches. Coaches re ruining committed players and coaches who have someone committees and then get a call from a”better” prospect and they tell s kid that they are not committed. I don’t feel OU has done that very much but they have done it. So door needs to go both ways.

  • Rick says:

“so many coaches are coming by the school and it’s just a lot to take in…I’m trying to give Parrish space to figure out what he wants to do.” That’s the problem right there. Last I checked, Cobb was committed to OU. So tell the coaches to stop coming. You’re not interested. You’re already committed elsewhere. That’ll fix that problem. What’s Parrish trying to figure out? If he ain’t got it figured out, then don’t be committing!!!

    • Bill Holder says:

Amen to that. If they’re visiting or still talking they’re not committed and need to know no spot will be held and that the coaches are looking for their replacement.

  • Maverick says:

K or Jordan, do you guys have a feel for how many spots are left? We need like a ticker or something. Or maybe how many comittable offers?

  • Kody K. says:

I’d just like to mention that Joshua Jacobs out of Tulsa is a stud. I could definitely see him somewhere in Riley’s offense. Although I have heard some buzz that Texas is giving him a close look. Really shocked at his sparse offer list thus far.

KJ said he heard rumors of a young DB possibly transferring but it wasn’t 100% yet.

          • Zack says:

I saw his comment. So far all I’ve seen is that a couple of older DBs might leave. It would not be good to lose one of the young ones, they all have good upside.

          • MikeyBoom says:

I agree. Wouldn’t mind seeing Byrd leave if he could find playing time somewhere else. But I think its a young DB. Stephens? Sunderland/

          • Glocal Sooner says:

Completely shooting in the dark here but I know Prentice McKinney was suspended here towards the end of the year along with Daniel Brooks and someone else.

          • Zack says:

McKinney and Stephens are the only 2 I can think of that would transfer out.

          • Stephen says:

            It’s not McKinney

          • bmrsnr says:

            Do you know who?

          • Stephen says:

Yes, but he’s more or less weighing his options right now. Not a done a deal.

          • MikeyBoom says:

            Sunderland?

          • Stephen says:

I’d rather not name drop since there is a possibility nothing happens.

          • MikeyBoom says:

Sorry didn’t mean to name drop. Just thought it was weird that Sunderland recently changed his twitter avi, doesn’t mention OU on his bio(like he previously did) and wasn’t at the 2nd to last game of the year vs OSU (Bedlam). I say that because I was at the mall the day before bedlam and took a pic with him n wondered why he wasn’t in Stillwater or wherever the rest of the team is normally the night before. Who knows, lol. I may just be reading into too much. Man I have too much time on my hands. HAHA

          • Bob Edwards says:

The B-12 limits travel squads to 70. That could explain his absence.

          • MikeyBoom says:

I see your point but why wouldn’t they take him with the team if they took him to other aways games. To my understanding he was at most away games. Like I said. I may be reading into it to much haha

          • Bob Edwards says:

If they take the other players they either have to have a ticket to sit in the stands or they have to go against their non-uniformed personnel on the sideline limit. Giving the nature of that game, he may have gotten bumped for someone like Jim Ross or Toby Keith. Not saying you are wrong, given the other info you provided, but saying there are possible explanations.

          • MikeyBoom says:

your guess is as good as mine Bob.

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

They more than likely stay in Norman the day before Bedlam and take a bus to Stillwater on Saturday, especially for a night game. I could be wrong though.

          • MikeyBoom says:

Lincoln, your guess is as good as mine brother

          • bmrsnr says:

            From last years class?

          • bmrsnr says:

            From last years class?

          • Stephen says:

          • bmrsnr says:

  • j l says:

Seems so weird that we were able to grab 4 star WR like clockwork when we were rocking a running based offense back in 13/14, but now we are running the air raid, cant seem to get WR targets.

    • OUn8v says:

And yet, Norvell was fired. /s

      • j l says:

Much like monty, better recruiter than coach, IMO.

        • Stephen says:

Monty wasn’t there for too long to get his guys going. Norvell was there a looong time.

        • OUn8v says:

I wasn’t aware we were “rocking” in 13/14, especially Norvell, but to each his own.

          • j l says:

13 we got cavil, young, bennett, smallwood
14 we got quick, andrews, todd, mead, meier, ilanja(Sp)

You wouldnt consider 5 4 stars in the 14 class rocking?

          • OUn8v says:

Oh, I apologize. As stated in your OP, I thought we were discussing WRs, and those that are actually still on the roster, or that started in 15.

          • j l says:

Well thats true, most of that 13 class at WR is gone lol.

Think im most disappointed with cavil. Looked like the big WR we really needed, and he never even hit the field.

    • Jpsooner23 says:

Could it be that one is related to the other?

      • j l says:

Some kids say our style of offense dosent get them ready for the NFL, yet baylor gets studs left and right.

        • Jpsooner23 says:

I’m saying maybe the multitude of young players could be scaring some off.

We have a coach there now in Gundy that I believe will make it happen soon. If we are in the same boat next year I will be worried.

          • j l says:

Thats possible, but most of those kids are soph/juniors now. I think humphrey is the only WR that RS last year. With only 1 returning spot likely taken(dede), lots of PT up for grabs.

  • Furr-Sure says:

Can someone tell me who PJ Blue is? I think I missed that offer

  • metzker says:

Anybody watch the Jeffers kids video?

  • Johnny Greenlantern Otis says:

good love the updates today keep em comin

  • Clint Lenard says:

Anyone an SS member? If so, what “big recruit” is OU moving on from?

  • Mark slavin says:

I noticed rivals and scout didn’t show Ryan Parker anymore.

    • Tim A says:

Same with Pernell Jefferson. I heard he was ‘leaving’ but never saw anything on it other than he is not listed any longer on Rivals.

  • Cincysooner says:

I was getting ready to say that Ryan Parker is not on Rivals commit list. That would be my guess.

    • Daryl says:

I thought that Parker was having to put off coming until summer and that is a reason he is not listed. I believe it was credits issue and he was going to need another semester to get those credits.

  • metzker says:

On a lighter note________ theirs a dead skunk somewhere around my job trailor. I will
    blame Golf!!!!!!!!!!!

  • soonerborn says:

OU recruiting seems to be on 1 step forward 2 steps back mode.

  • Tom Turman says:

Anyone have a scholarship chart? By my count, with the current commitments, we are at 83 right now, but we have several more in play. Here’s who I’ve got listed:

    ATH (1) – Adrian Hardy

DB (16) – Dakota Austin, Hatari Byrd, Parrish Cobb, Kahlil Haughton, Will Johnson, PJ Mbanasor, Prentice McKinney, Parnell Motley, Jordan Parker, Steven Parker, Antoine Stephens, Will Sunderland, Chanse Sylvie, Stanvon Taylor, Ahmad Thomas and Jordan Thomas

DE (6) – Amani Bledsoe, Gabriel Campbell, Isaac Ijalana, Kenneth Mann, Austin Roberts and DJ Ward

DT (9) – Matt Dimon, Neville Gallimore, Courtney Garnett, Du’Vonta Lampkin, Dwayne Orso-Bacchus, Marquise Overton, Matthew Romar, Jordan Wade and Charles Walker

    FB (1) – Dmitri Flowers

    K/P (2) – Austin Seibert, Jack Steed

LB (9) – Curtis Bolton, Ricky Deberry, Kapri Doucet, Jordan Evans, Tay Evans, Arthur McGinnis, Ogbonnia Okoronkwo, Jon-Michael Terry and Bryce Youngquist

    LS (1) – Wesley Horky

OL (16) – Jonathan Alvarez, Orlando Brown Jr., Christian Daimler, Alex Dalton, Jamal Danley, Bobby Evans, Cody Ford, Sam Grant, Dominique Hearne, Ashton Julious, Quinn Mittermeier, Joseph Paul, Ben Powers, Logan Robertson, Dru Samia and Johncarlo Valentin

QB (4) – Austin Kendall, Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray and Cody Thomas

TE (2) – Mark Andrews and Carson Meier

WR (10) – Jarvis Baxter, Dahu Green, John Humphrey, Geno Lewis, Jeffrey Mead, AD Miller, Michiah Quick, Jordan Smallwood, Dallis Todd and Dede Westbrook

    Total (83)

  • Zack says:

And the bipolars are back…I’ve been prepared for us to lose Parker for awhile. When he didn’t sign in December I figured he wouldn’t make it.

  • Jordan Esco says:

Assuming Parker can’t make it, or OU simply moves on, Sooners are rapidly approaching the point of having to take a body at WR just for the sake of taking one. And that almost never works out well.

As badly as they need impact guys at WR in this system, if they only bring in one guy — and a talented one at that, but a project by almost anyone’s assessment — it would be hard to see that as anything other than a pretty considerable failure on the part of Gundy/Simmons/Riley.

    • bommer85 says:

i can’t wrap my brain around the lack of interested players this one particular portion of recruiting(WR). flabbergasted is the only word i have.

    • BoomerDave says:

Worked out pretty well when we offered a guy named Broyles at the 11th hour.

    • Soonerfan24 says:

We offered Dahu and AD Miller on January 26th and 27th of last year, and they both seem like they will be big time contributers in the future

      • Jordan Esco says:

Could very well be, yes. And I’m rooting for that to be the case just like you are. But going into next year, are you prepared to say they WILL be?

        • D Hunter Sanchez says:

I need a reason for why good Wrs go elsewhere? Is it that BS tenure lacks many NFL wrs? Clayton, Brandon Jones, Stills, Saunders.

        • Soonerfan24 says:

The fact that the coaches trusted them enough to get them on the field as true freshmen leads me to believe they will be contributors in the future. By no means am I willing to guarantee that they will be making huge plays next year though. My question to you: Would you be happy if OU got two WRs of Dahu/AD Miller caliber b/w now and NSD?

      • Bill Holder says:

I haven’t seen either one of them do anything that even remotely makes me think either one will be a contributor, much less a big time one. Being able to catch a football is something you either can or can’t do. You can teach route running but not catching.

        • Drew says:

That’s pretty harsh. They were both true freshman this year, they were bound to have jitters. I think the fact that they got playing time, when we even had guys like Andrews sitting for a significant number of snaps, speaks to their potential.

          • Clint Lenard says:

The point is that both weren’t good enough to get many chances this season, which is why they weren’t ranked high. A big time recruit will get chances because, well, he’s (usually) good enough.

          • Slim Sooner says:

You’re right, but both still have potential and could develop to be great players just as easily as not. About this time last year we were excited about them, and to be fair neither got enough pt or chances to give us reason to write them off yet. I still don’t think we’ve seen the best of Quick, he could gave a breakout season. All receivers drop passes, even Sterling, but that doesn’t mean Dahu or Miller can’t catch. We just don’t know and can’t see into the future, but that’s true of more than just the wr’s. It’s possible that we could still get a couple wr recruits we aren’t expecting. Anything can happen this time of year.

          • Clint Lenard says:

But they weren’t on that talent level to come in and play ASAP, which is what Velus Jones will give OU now that they picked up his commitment.

          • Slim Sooner says:

Way ecstatic about Velus! This Boom is major for us.

        • Soonerfan24 says:

I disagree. The only two things you can’t teach are size and passion

    • SoonerOracle737 says:

Not sure what is going on here. What is inside scoop on WR recruiting troubles?

      • Jordan Esco says:

They don’t have many and have missed on even more. All w/ supposedly one of their best/most effective recruiters, Cale Gundy, as WRs coach.

    • soonerthunder says:

I remember when eshbach was crying about how terrible recruiting was going for OU in stoops’ first year. Stoops said that he will never sign someone just to sign someone, and I don’t believe he ever has. If we sign a WR it will be someone they think can play. I think people will be very pleasantly surprised with the Penn St wr, a lot like mayfield. Like stoops said that first year, there are a lot of good football players out there

      • Jordan Esco says:

“Stoops said that he will never sign someone just to sign someone, and I don’t believe he ever has.”

I’m 100% confident he/they felt that way at the time, but I think you could pretty easily go back and point out any number of guys where that eventually proved to be the case.

    • Malicong says:

Even as a sunshine pumping eternal optimist, I completely agree with this. Should be one of the easiest positions for OU to recruit. If they don’t flip someone late this is a major issue. It helps having the Penn St transfer and I think last years players could end up good but this is two straight years without a big time high school recruit at an incredibly important position.

      • hOUligan says:

That’s the concern..2 years back-to-back w/ no top wr. Remains to be seen but I’ve read several articles on Geno Lewis being an athletic freak w/ ‘massive hands’ and the speed for vertical routes. Sure hope so.

    • Tom Turman says:

The scroll on the bottom of Sooners Illustrated says Ryan Parker decommitted 6 hours ago, just in case anyone was uncertain at this point.

      • Jordan Esco says:

that’s not the case that I’m aware of. my assumption is that’s related to a couple of the services removing him from OU’s commitment list.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

I thought TFB reported that the position coaches recruit areas only? Example, Simmons recruits all positions in California. If not, WTF is going on with wide out recruiting?

    • Jpsooner23 says:

Not saying you are wrong just asking a question. If the coaches are scrambling to find someone why do we keep seeing new 2017 offers going out all over the place? Seems they are spending a lot of time on next years guys right now. If they had nothing in their back pocket I just wouldn’t think they would spend one minute on next year. Dunno?

      • metzker says:

Kinda had those thoughts as well

      • Jordan Esco says:

b/c recruiting never stops. you’re always working on your current class while planning for the next couple.

        • metzker says:

          I stand corrected sir.

        • Jpsooner23 says:

I get that. Not oblivious to this stuff. Just sayin at some point if u r in the panic many imply we may be in u have to drop everything and go get what u can. Not saying the whole staff either. Seeing wr offers for 2017. If we were so screwed at that position this year I gotta think the staff or some portion of it would say they could wait a few more weeks for those guys next year. Not saying anyone’s right or wrong, just an observation. I don’t recall as much 2016 action last year when we were closing out 2015 class.

I’m going to stick with this theory cause it makes me feel better. We won’t know the whole story til NSD anyway.

    • RBear says:

Slightly rhetorical question here but how in the hell does that happen? This is OU, we just made the CFP at least a year ahead of schedule in most eyes- Riley won some awards as an OC, this system and Mayfield have excelled!

What gives with the lack of solid recruiting at the WR position? I’m baffled!!

      • Soonerboyz says:

Agree to the max..recruiting trouble that is unexplained and unacceptable in order to get back to elite status for sure

        • RBear says:

One marked difference from last year to this as far as keeping a pulse on Riley/Gundy and their recruiting trails: last year, they lit Twitter up with where and what they were doing, this year, more like crickets.

    • Zack says:

There’s another blinn college WR that is a burner. I don’t understand this year’s receiver recruiting. This is one of the few places I would be scared of competition at WR.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

A lot of walk-on WR’s on the roster. I don’t know a thing about them, but surely some of them, having been around the team for a year, would be better options than just taking somebody.

  • MikeyBoom says:

        • Jordan Esco says:

I think so, yes. What purpose did it serve him playing those handful of snaps he got? Very little, IMO.

          • bommer85 says:

Also A few other players that should be said for over the past years

          • BoomerDave says:

Hindsight is awesome, isn’t it? I’m sure they didn’t intend to just play him a few snaps. He will have had an undisclosed injury and get his year back.

          • Zack says:

As dumb as its been to not redshirt guys, think about it like this, if they red shirted Darlington he would be here one more year getting pushed around. On the flip side, red shirting may have helped him the weight room.

  • OU85 says:

Just saw Lincoln Riley and Dennis Simmons at Will Rogers in the terminal. Hmmm?

    • Jpsooner23 says:

They must have just read the boards and realized they needed to go get some wr help.

That is correct, as Sapulpa is where I currently live as well. Very nice kid!

        • soonerthunder says:

hey brien, what do you think about: jauan williams, kyzir white, mayden, kelly, jackson, chattman?

          • Brien Brown says:

Mean just IMO only and only my thoughts is. Williams I really don’t know enough about but, seems he is really into us he would be a good get but, IDK where that would leave us with Moore though it’s been stated Moore is a silent but I can not confirm or deny that. Kyzir White IDK enough about either but, with him being a JUCO kid he could come in and help right away I just dont know where think he is a Safety. Mayden would be a huge boost and would help take some sting away if we end up losing Cobb though rather have both. I still think C. Kelly will be a a Sooner in my gut and I am being optimistic but, I do think ND will make it tough. Jackson I think is a real possibility considering he has a great visit as I believe he has already been to Texas and some Texas fans feel he will be a Sooner also FWIW. Chattman mean we discussed this the other day me and another guy we get a Mayden or even a guy like White who was not discussed we back off him unless they like him as a OLB prospect cause I feel he can play there but, with the kids we are recruiting at LB you don’t just give him a spot to just be doing it.

  • Slim Sooner says:

A great and much-needed WR Boom sure can perk up the patrons!!!! Thanks, VJ.

    • Stephen woods says:

Interesting… Sounds like an OU lean again??

    • J J says:

      Good lord…

      • RBear says:

He did re-tweet Velus’ commitment tweet though… stay tuned I guess.

        • J J says:

I am not one to beat down high school kids, don’t think people should be tweeting at them… Honestly, I changed my mind about college easily 3 times between graduation & Memorial Day. It’s a big deal… Having said that I think Daniels is loving all the attention he’s been getting recently

          • RBear says:

I’m not aware of anyone, here or elsewhere, that Tweets at these kids. However, I suppose if they’re going to throw stuff out on Social Media, it’s all fair game for comment by the masses.

          • J J says:

Haha I was referring to myself. I don’t want to be negative towards a kid… 5 years older than my own… That’s why I said “I am not one to beat down”… I am on Twitter, it just seems to me he’s liking all the attention.. And not in a good way. Just not my place to judge.

          • RBear says:

Could be, hard to say. My take is that he’s just like most kids his age, communicating through these types of media is their way. The attention he’s getting is probably a bit overwhelming- I wish him luck whatever he decides.

          • RBear says:

Could be, hard to say. My take is that he’s just like most kids his age, communicating through these types of media is their way. The attention he’s getting is probably a bit overwhelming- I wish him luck whatever he decides.

          • Brien Brown says:

I tweeted him and told him despite the hate and the harshness he will receive regardless that I wish him well in any decision and may God bless him either way, btw I prefer you have that #OUDNA I got a fav from him. I will not beat a kid up over social media and I really would like to see these kid have success even if it’s not at OU!

    • Fear The Magic says:

Honestly I feel that Daniels is a silent commit to UT. Hes waited the appropriate time and now hes gotten a “sign from God”. I expect that he’ll be committing there within a few days.
Hope Im wrong but we’ll see soon enough.

      • Stephen woods says:

You may be right, I kinda had the gut feeling he was UTs. But the sudden spurt of OU commits seems to have him leaning OU again. But just my opinion, what I gathered from his tweets.

      • bigrackhunter says:

Those $100 handshakes and hot prepaid co-eds can be misinterpreted for a sign of a higher power. Plus Texas needs him really bad (zero dt last class).

    • Kevin Moore says:

The sign is currently being put in the South End zone. Very large crimson and cream with your picture on the Jumbo Tron! ; )

    • rphokc says:

      athletes and religion, good humor

  • Zack says:

My take on Daniels is that he did the right thing to open his recruitment since he kept getting asked about whether he would stick with ou. He felt pressure to give Texas a real look but they are not making him a priority and they look to be trying to flip 2 in state kids that are committed outside of Texas (mike Williams and Elliot) add in that the sec schools came in way late with offers (carry the 7) and it adds up to a boom.

    • Brien Brown says:

OU’s wishbone dive plays were the quickest ever…You know the fake to King and the give to Sims…

  • OUn8v says:

Good morning, Brainy ones. I thought I was on LandThieves here a couple of days ago. Read about Stoops “can’t get it done”. “Gundy is in the wrong spot”. Blah blah. What a difference a day makes. That, and about 3 good BOOMs. It’s always good to be a Sooner fan. 😉

    • bigrackhunter says:

I’ve learned to avoid engaging in the comments section anytime something bad happens, or your stuck defending 2×AA’s! No disrespect to Daniels but Bledsoe is a bigger need at the 5 tech spot than another 3 or 1 tech dt. Plus we bought in 2 other first choice guys as well. This train is going to keep roaring I suggest all recruits to hope on before it’s gone.

    • Bob Edwards says:

I found a picture of one of them.

  • Hotrod33 says:

It has been a good week and I hope it continues through the weekend. So far I like this class. It is turning out to be a nice class. I would like to have a couple of silent commits so that signing day is exciting and enjoyable. I hope we get some updates today.

    • Zack says:

I think it will be a good finish.

      • Brien Brown says:

I am hopeful of 1 more BOOM this weekend and possibly 2 and 3rd may not be so far fetched! I think Mayden commits and I am feeling good about Mark Jackson and think we can flip Hudson! But, I am the unreal optimistic type!

        • Brien Brown says:

I know Mark Jackson wasn’t on the visitor list but I think he is a Boom waiting to happen!

          • bigrackhunter says:

            He could get immediately pt.

          • Brien Brown says:

I agree rather its at the Striker spot or as a true DE, I feel Bledsoe could play as a FR as a true DE!

          • bigrackhunter says:

Strikers spot is more of a jackbacker position. Yes it’s more of a true de spot than the 5 tech (Bledsoe likely position), but it’s still a lb position. Our base 3/4 is very much like Bama’s. In that it’s primary pass rush comes off the edge from the jack backer spot.

          • Brien Brown says:

Oh I agree and he is a talent we could def. use and would be well used on OUr squad!!!

          • bigrackhunter says:

What’s good is all three commits comes at a position of need and has vacancies signs flashing. I could see the lb making an immediate impact with his size, speed, and vision.

          • Brien Brown says:

Yea I can’t disagree with that at all, Kelly seems like a kid that could come in and earn PT also. If and I say if as in a big big if we flip Cleveland he would be a great one also

          • Zack says:

I would like to see Bledsoe red shirt and really hit the weights. He can be an absolute beast with a year in the weight room. Sure he looks the part but he will be facing guys who have been in college for 3-5 years and he probably wouldn’t play more than 10% of the snaps.

          • Brien Brown says:

Would OU take a Mark Jackson and a Brandon Bowen with Bledsoe committed or is it a first taker kind of situation? IMO you can’t have enough talented DL especially edge rushers unless they make Bowen or Jackson an OLB!

          • Zack says:

I think Jackson has the athleticism to play OLB in our scheme like bond. From watching the little bit of highlights on Bowen, I see DE all the way reminds me of Ward. I don’t know that we have a real shot at Bowen but I think mike is going to make a real run at him. Much more likely to land Jackson.

          • bigrackhunter says:

He s a tweener, and would make a good jackbacker with his pass rushing skills. He would be perfect for our boundary backer spot and help absorb the loss if Bond.

          • blaster1371 says:

reminds me a lot of …and i just went blank..the DE we got out of Kansas #85..last game was the Sugar Bowl…starts with a G…

            Geno grissom

          • blaster1371 says:

thank you. that name popped in my head but i talked myself into thinking i got the name confused with Gresham.

          • bigrackhunter says:

I see Dan Cody with his size and frame.

        • Zack says:

Mayden said if he commits it will be silent. Sounds to me like he ends up at ou. I think we will flip Mark Jackson and since he’s “committed” to a&m, I think he will announce opening up his recruiting at the very least before NSD, that would be the right thing to do. I’m not sure about flipping Hudson, I haven’t heard much about that and I know we are in good position with Williams and Moore.

          • Brien Brown says:

Which is really good! Both very strong OL prospects it kinda scares me that we could have another FR starting on the OL and I say that cause I think both are talented enough to come in and earn some PT although I think Bobby Evans has the chance if healthy to turn heads. Plus I think CK is coming also. But I think me and you both know there is some surprise flip maybe two as we discussed last night!

  • F1at1ined says:

Morning Sooner brethren. Quick slightly off topic question – I know Oklahoma as a state gets tornado activity but does Norman itself see much activity? Wife is deathly afraid of natural disasters but I was hoping to talk her into either visiting one future game day or ideally relocating there if it’s not a terrible tornado risk lol.

    • RBear says:

prob have a better chance of winning the lottery than to encounter a tornado on a game day visit

    • Sooner Ray says:

We are an earthquake state now.

      • blaster1371 says:

Ive lived in the People’s Socialist Republic of California for 23 years now and have experienced a hand full of earth quakes- little rockers nothing big. My cousins still live back in OK and they had experienced more quakes than I have and that is just in the past five years.

        • cush creekmont says:

I lived in SoCal in the 1970 era and went through a BIG one. It hit in the early AM so I was asleep until everything fell off the wall. For all the Okie twisters, it is much better to deal with them because now there is at least some warning. 7.0 or + EQ has no such warning.

      • Boomer4life says:

A quakenado state if you will.

    • Bob Edwards says:

In the last ten years 78 people died in Oklahoma from tornadoes, in 2010 alone 668 died in traffic accidents. That means you are 85 times more likely to die in your car than from a tornado.

    • Gary Robbins says:

Norman has had a few scares. But Moore, Oklahoma right up the road has had some devastating tornadoes including a F-5. Being a lifelong Oklahoma resident (69 yrs.) it is something you live with. I guess all parts of the country have some type of adversity.

    • paganpink says:

You can go your whole long life and never see one or be bothered by one! Don’t move to Moore though. It seems to have more then science or probabilities would ever account for.

    • Shane Rivas says:

Just get a shelter and watch the weather if you relocate.

    • RocketCitySooner says:

I lived in Oklahoma for 24 years and never saw a tornado. I’ve lived in Alabama ever since and never saw one there either.

Should be fairly easy to talk her into a game day visit. Tornados are very seasonally dependent. Google a bit and find the frequency of tornadoes by month. First, you get her there for a game and then work on the relocation.

    • Zack says:

Norman sees some action but for the most part it misses Norman. The one that hit el Reno a few years ago was about 2 or 3 miles from my house in Yukon, that one was headed toward a highly populated part of NW okc and it turned south but that was as close and as scared as I’ve been due to a tornado. But as it was mentioned if you move anywhere in Oklahoma you should have a storm shelter.

    • Stephen woods says:

Norman always gets missed by tornadoes. there is a path from Chickasha to south OKC that they usually follow. North Moore always seems to get a direct hit. Heres the thing though, we usually know a few days ahead that there is a chance for tornadoes. they don’t jut pop out of a sunny sky.

    • F1at1ined says:

Thanks to all for the replies both serious and humorous. I realize it’s very easy these days with technology advances that forecasting is that much more precise. Wife has experienced first hand typhoons and a big earthquake on Guam so can appreciate it may bother her more than me. I had checked around and didn’t see Norman seemed to get much tornado activity especially considering what Moore and other parts of the state have endured. Living in upstate NY, relocation is never far from my mind. Cost of living sure is better lol

    • Drew says:

I’ve lived in OK my whole life outside of college, and I can tell you that tornadoes really aren’t that big of a deal. Now, I have seen some tornadoes myself, but they’ve always been in the distance, and I’ve seen more in texas.

The thing is though, after you’ve been here awhile, you can just tell when they’re coming. Not to mention that Norman has the top weather school in the country, and there are tons of early warning systems in place. Even if you were to visit in the middle of tornado season during a thunderstorm, odds are you’d have nothing to worry about .

      • blaster1371 says:

True about knowing they are coming. I developed a whole new appreciation for meteorologist in the Norman area when I took two courses on the subject at OU. We also felt pretty safe knowing Gary England was watching the radars.

    • blaster1371 says:

I lived-in Norman for eighteen years. Tornados did not come through there but over it. Sirens would go off seems like a couple of times a season but that was because the clouds were circulating but if they did touch down it was always beyond us and more toward south east side of OKC. Just west of Norman, out in the flats got one while we lived there. Like Drew said below, its not that big of a deal.

  • Tipman says:

If we get cobb and mayden does motley switch to offense?

          • Bob Edwards says:

One report, that I can’t find now, quoted Stoops as saying something to the effect that he would be welcome to come back in the fall, if he wanted to. That’s doesn’t sound like he is planning to come back as it stands now.

          • Dick Bump says:

Might as well. He looks a lot like mayfield in that he’s got good numbers and can play but people aren’t impressed by his height.

      • Brien Brown says:

True but people seem to really underestimate a QB by his size rather than his gamesmanship. Fine is a baller and played his entire career in an air raid system, never had much of a running game behind him but that wouldn’t be the case at OU so give the kid a shot I would bet if he showed up he would be no worse then 3rd on the depth chart.

        • BleedCrimson says:

Maybe give him a chance with a preferred walk-on and let him earn the scholarship.

          • Brien Brown says:

Thats why I said offer him a walk on spot he isn’t a scholarship player yet but kid would bust his butt to get one.

  • cush creekmont says:
