Weekend Visitor Updates (UPDATE Sun., 2:08 pm)

We’ll go ahead and start adding visitor updates here.

Jared Mayden and Brandon Bowen: Hearing that Mayden and Bowen’s family are having a great time. And apparently the Maydens and the Bowens are friends. Hearing that OU is doing such a good job with both that if these don’t go OU’s way, there really wasn’t much else the Sooners could have done.

Because of Mayden’s family connection we’ve been feeling like the Sooners were seriously players for Mayden. But in talking to a couple folks, we are also getting the sense that OU is giving the Bowens something to think about. It’s definitely big that the families have been able to spend time on their visits together. This wasn’t a visit just to visit for fun for either target…this was about seeing what OU has to offer and it sounds like they are liking what they are seeing. – (Brandon)

Emmanuel Beal and PJ Blue: JUCO LB Emmanuel Beal sent us a picture of him, coach Stoops and Louisville LB commit, PJ Blue.

– UPDATE (Sun., 11:42 am):

– UPDATE (Sun., 11:53 am):

UPDATE (Sunday, 2:08 pm): Talked to a couple people and it sounds like Louisville LB, PJ Blue’s visit went really well. However, we are told that Oklahoma didn’t push for a commitment and Blue will visit Louisville next week.

Why didn’t they push for a commitment? This is where it get’s interesting. The person we talked to said the reason for that was the Sooners are feeling good about both Caleb Kelly and Mark Jackson. That certainly doesn’t mean it’s a guarantee but the staff likes their chances enough with those guys to hold off on pushing for a commitment from Blue. – (Brandon)

    First

  • Lincoln Hawk says:

Sounds promising. As always, appreciate all of the info, good or bad.

  • bjwalker82 says:

    this has been a rollercoaster

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

I think we get Mayden, but I kindof doubt Bowen. This has been a crazy few days. I’m sure we will close strong but the qb situation is quite concerning considering bakers injuries last season. It would have been nice if Murray was available.

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

Maybe they put Dalton Wood on scholarship now and use him as a qb/fb/hb/te

    • Zack says:

Wood won’t be put on scholarship until he is on campus for the season.

      • hemisooner says:

He has to show that he wants to be here.

        • Zack says:

Yep but I imagine if he makes it through the first few games, then he will be the next player put on scholarship. I feel bad for the kid to deal with the BS he’s had to for the last few years and I hope he learns from it. I feel bad because his ex is taking/took his daughter to Germany.

  • Birddawg says:

Kerry cooks has done a tremendous job so far with his DB group.
Bringing in Jared Mayden will make two outstanding classes in a row.
Can never have enough Dbs, especially with Baylor etc on your schedule

  • Kevin Moore says:

If someone told you last year that EVERY QB OU had on scholarship would leave within the year and we would only have 3 walk-ons left what would you think? Sure Mayfield is one, but he hadn’t even won the job yet last year. The other two are redshirt freshmen Reece Clark and Connor McGinnis. Fast forward one year and Mayfield’s a very capable yet concussion prone starter. How do you feel about his two backups? Would we really jeopardize true freshmen Austin Kendall’s psyche and redshirt as next year’s backup? Next year’s title run is getting real interesting real fast. ; )

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

It is what it is. IMHO, Knight’s inablity to move the team nearly cost us the Big 12 title. Thomas still can’t complete a forward pass. So, yeah experience wise we are hurting, talent? Not so sure.

    • Nate Broadus says:

“If someone told you last year that EVERY QB OU had on scholarship would leave within the year and we would only have 3 walk-ons left what would you think?”

That it explains why Heupel was let go. That is poor talent evaluation if you can’t find even one guy that can consistently complete a forward pass in several recruiting classes.

    • brainpimp says:

I just don’t think you can call Mayfield concussion prone. Any human that takes a spearing penalty tot he back of the head can react that way. Any human that takes a knee, thigh to the noggin can react hat way. Those were not “normal” plays, something out of the norm had to occur to even put him in that position.

  • Wilson says:

I’m not believing anything else until spring practice roster is released….

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

or until all the faxes are in on NSD.

Hey guys and few gals. I know today wasn’t exactly as exciting as yesterday was. But the Mens team did get a nice W and well we still have our freedom and had another day to be alive. Its no doubt been a tough one but it is what it is. Much love to all and may you all have a great evening! PEACE OUT for now!

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Don’t get me wrong here, I like that BS will not hold a player back from transferring, however, in light of the fact that the report on SScoop said that Thomas’ decision to play baseball only, did not catch OU off guard, why couldn’t OU really try and get Knight to stay?

Without an experienced back up, Mayfield has to change his playing style. LR needs to incorporate a consistent safety valve (Mixon/Perine) for Baker to dump the ball to. Last time we faced a similar situation, JH was running a read option with the only option being to hand off.

    • Lane Gilstrap says:

Knight is a grad transfer so he can’t be blocked. Plus Austin Kendall might be better anyways.

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Yeah, damn, forgot about that one.

        • hemisooner says:

Don’t get your hopes on that one DHS. Young man has a lot to prove to the coaches and players that he wants to be here before even puts on the uniform.

      • j l says:

If we have to resort to kendall, we are probably hosed anyway lol.

        • Nate Broadus says:

I would have said the same thing with Knight in place of Kendall in your sentence.

TCU was the smoking gun. It was all the evidence I needed that Trevor Knight wasn’t ever going to be the guy. I would rather take my chances on the young gun.

          • j l says:

Knight wouldnt do any better i dont think, just hate to burn kendall’s redshirt. Though he might be #2 by default, and thus probably wont RS anyway.

          • Boomer4life says:

He will probably be #2 again when Murray is eligible.

        • Furr-Sure says:

I’d hope Riley would utilize Baylor’s gameplan vs. UNC before going to Kendall.

Run Perine/Mixon/Anderson behind our o-line. Mix in some jet sweeps and reverses.

          • Nate Broadus says:

Briles had the OL to implement that kind of gameplan on the fly.

OU, meanwhile, seriously overachieved under the circumstances (2 freshmen tackles, a soph guard and the remnants of Patton’s regime).

          • j l says:

Would be worth a try lol.

          • Lane Gilstrap says:

You should take a look at Dalton Woods film. He runs like Blake Bell. Maybe even better.

          • Mark_in_VA says:

Yup. I think this will work out to be Plan B if Thomas really is done. Save AK’s redshirt and work up the Belldozer offense with a bit more passing and see what DW can do. If they go this route, they should probably let DW in there for some short-yardage situations just like the Belldozer to spell Mayfield. Just to give him some comfort and I think the change of pace will be effective.

      • OUBmrSnr72 says:

Am I the only one who watched the TCU game? AK might not be better but he can’t be worse.

        • D Hunter Sanchez says:

I agree. I was using Knight as more of an example. I am excited to have fresh talent. Knight and Thomas are simply below OU standards.

      • Jeff says:

He is a true freshman, if Mayfield goes down OU is in big trouble

    • Wilson says:

If the O-line improves and matures, the run and pass game will be better and BM won’t have to run for his life, hopefully decreasing the chance of injury.

    • Dick Bump says:

I think Cody Thomas will be back in the fall. He’s only a sophomore. Depending on how many offensive changes they make during spring, it shouldn’t take him that long to get up to speed to be the backup.

    • Spitting Bull says:

They aren’t going to change Baker’s style. I like the safety valve though. He needs to do that some regardless.

    • SoonerinLondon says:

I don’t actually feel any worse about the QB situation. Frankly, I haven’t seen anything out of TK or Cody in the last year that makes me think they can play championship level football at OU. Fresh blood couldn’t set us back any, IMO.

  • Furr-Sure says:

I think it’s clear, especially after the past few days, that recruits often tell beat writers what they’d like to hear.

Pro-OU statements to OU writers, pro-Texas statements to Texas writers, etc.

Makes you really respect guys like Perine, Youngquist, and Sylvie who were committed and stayed committed. No BS, no recruiting drama for attention.

    • Hooknladder says:

The drama isn’t always about attention now is it? Think that maybe, JUST maybe, some of these kids actually COULD change their mind? THat just MAYBE they are weighing lots of pros and cons in their minds and are a little confused? ONCE THEY SIGN THEY CAN”T DO A THING. THe adults who recruited them can come and go as they like. Stop bashing 17 and 18 y/os who are making the biggest decision of their lives.

      • Furr-Sure says:

I understand it’s a big decision. I understand that people change their minds while weighing their options, especially 17 or 18 year olds in recruiting with all the pressure.

I’m just saying many recruits enjoy the attention from social media, and it might be best to withhold announcing their decision until they’re absolutely sure. Even if that means waiting until NSD after all their visits

  • TSFFKAG says:

Mayden and Bowen on the field the same time would be more than awesome!

  • David Morris says:

Sounds like a good weekend, I think we take all four.

    • Zack says:

I don’t think we’re flipping blue. We still have Kelly and Mark Jackson on our board as top targets. I think they may be up front with beal and let him know those 2 are the top targets and his spot is there if they miss one, or if he’s willing to wait to make sure we have an open scholarship following NSD.

      • Furr-Sure says:

OU certainly has a shot with Mark Jackson, but everything I’ve read says he’s leaning towards Texas.

But I agree that landing both Kelly and Jackson would be HUGE, and they’re worth waiting for. No offense to PJ Blue

      • David Morris says:

More than Likely but you never know with this year’s recruiting.

  • Steve-O says:

    I want that bocce setup

  • Zack says:

Jordan or K, have you thought about putting a basketball schedule up on the home page like the football schedule?

  • Venom says:

Being reported that Emmanuel Beal committed

  • hemisooner says:

    Did beal commit

  • Dustin Brasel says:

    Beal = Boom?

  • hemisooner says:

    Can we get a BOOM

  • Jason Vos says:

Told you it was a matter of time with Beal

  • Jason Vos says:

    Boom!!

  • Framoka says:

    Double Lackawanna BOOM!

  • Gurry says:

    BA, BA, BOOM!
    Welcome to Sooner Nation!

  • SamSooner says:

My fellow Ohio brethren, who is this Kish is tweeting about?

    https://twitter.com/OU_CoachKish/status/691324808701739008

    Edit: is he referencing Beal?

  • SoonerfanTU says:

Gonna have plenty of options at LB next year it would appear.

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

Kindof crazy that they would take 6

  • Zack says:

That last note about Jackson and Kelly is why I didn’t think they would take beal. I thought they would be clear with both that doucet took the remaining “non held” spot and the other 2 are backup plans. But if they expect someone to leave or move positions (McGinnis to DE) then I guess you have to load up with such a small class of linebackers the last couple years.

    • Mr. Jones says:

If they feel this way, I’m also surprised they would take two juco commits at that.

    • GDO says:

So Erick Fowler is also visiting next weekend; is there much thought to how much interest he has in us?

      • Zack says:

I think he sticks with lsu.

        • GDO says:

I saw an interview recently, and I cannot say that you are wrong, but he did sound like he has enough interest in looking around that OU could at least put some thought into his mind with what they have to offer. But, considering the number of LB commitments up to this point and the perceived interest from Kelly and Jackson, you may in fact be very right. He is certainly a talent that I hope OU exhausts all their resources with regardless because he could sure be a special talent here.

  • Randy says:

BOWEN… BOWEN….. BOWEN is what I want at OLB….. Future top 10 NFL pick at OLB !!! Now for ’16 I love the Doucet and Beal commits could be big time player.

  • Jake says:

    Random question.
What is the AD jersey in the top left of the trophy case in the above pics?
Is it a Pro Bowl jersey or something?
