– Obi Eboh: Have spoken to a couple folks with knowledge of 2016 CB Obi Eboh’s (Southlake, TX) recruitment and have been told that Eboh may be announcing his decision this Friday night after the Southlake Carroll vs. Tulsa Union game. Obviously things could easily change between now and then, but as of today a decision is expected to come Friday.

I’m told in no uncertain terms that if a decision is indeed announced, the choice will definitely come from one of the two Red River rivals. The Horns just offered Eboh yesterday, in what was described as a potential game-changer. And in speaking with a couple sources on the Texas side, I get the sense the UT coaches feel good about their chances. But at the same time, OU seems to like their chances as well given the longstanding relationship they have with Eboh.

I have been told several OU coaches will be in attendance at the SLC vs. Union game this Friday night. In addition to Eboh, there are multiple other OU targets also playing in the game (Tre Brown for Union & Robert Barnes for Carroll), so the OU coaches presence was almost assuredly planned in advance and not necessarily related to this potential announcement. – (Super K)

– Roshauud Paul: 2017 WR Roshauud Paul (Bremond, TX) tweeted out yesterday that he will be in attendance at this week’s OU season opener. Paul recently decommitted from TCU.

– Bryce Youngquist: The 2016 LB commit tweeted out yesterday that he plans to be in Norman the weekend of the Texas Tech game for his official visit.

– Team Note | PJ Mbanasor: I have been told that true freshman CB PJ Mbanasor has been receiving a number ofΒ first team reps this week in practices. It sounds like Kerry Cooks is trying to ensure he has solid depth at the position for the season ahead, so I am fully expecting Mbanasor toΒ receive significant playing time Saturday night. – (Super K)

– UPDATE (2:13 pm): No. 1 2017 RB in the country according to at least one service.

Even though Malik Jefferson seems like a “stand up guy”, I cannot wait to see Perine knock him on his Texsa butt.

And after Perine knocks him on his ass, the next play Mixon jukes him so hard he falls out of his shoes.

      • Jake says:

        Perine = back breaker
        Mixon = ankle breaker
Pretty hard to play football when your bottom extremities are shattered

        • T. says:

The other ankle will be broken by Dede just for good measure.

          • Jake says:

You know it’s dangerously close to game-time, and we the fans have our crimson & cream shades on, whenever barbaric acts of breaking other teams players seems righteous & justified lol.

        • Doobie74OU says:

Alex Ross = Heart breaker (I am undecided on which team will be most effected by this though)

      • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

@JB991:disqus So you two are saying that Perine is going to undress Malik. Alright. I’ll allow it.

        • Jake says:

I keep seeing all these “face of the program articles” pertaining to Malik. That’s great for TX, they need it.

All I’m doing is issuing a friendly PSA in advance: ***WARNING: All programs’ faces will be rearranged via Perine & Mixon’s wrath.

That SLC vs Union sounds like its a fun one. Any targets on either side besides Oboh?
Loving that PJ is getting reps. Still amazed that the kid stuck with us even through that last year.

Would love to see that one on television.

  • SamSooner says:

I can’t wait to see PJ play. I was most excited about his recruitment than anyone else in the 2015 class.

  • Jeremy Phillips says:

    Frison back on the team?

  • CS says:

Was watching some games from last year. Three things that concerned me the most and could carry over to this year were, Nila couldn’t beat out Dionte/Adam to become a starter, Jordan Evans size – always giving up 2-3 extra yards, even to a moderate sized back, and Ahmad Thomas – every big12 QB juked him, he doesn’t have the start stop nor the speed to cover. On the positive side though, we have other receivers not named Sterling who we have been hearing about, and the CB position with Jordan will be an upgrade from Julian.

    • SoonerMGB56 says:

Actually, the starting position went back and forth all year, between Dionte and Nila. Whomever had the best week of practice started. Nila had like 7 starts last year.

And the number of times Jordan Evans was getting knocked backward was miniscule when compared to Dom Alexander. And Jordan is 12-14 pounds (seems to be good weight) heavier than last year, around 238. Dom on the other hand is still around 222.

But I’m right there with you on A Thomas. He and Byrd scare me. I’ve already got a massive supply of Rolaids ready, for as long as they’re in there.

      • BigJoeBrown says:

Perhaps, that is why PJ is getting in some 1st team reps. He may be called to step up sooner rather than later.

        • SoonerMGB56 says:

Well PJ is a corner, and Jordan Thomas is solid at corner. Just think PJ is getting reps w/ 1’s to be ready, as depth. Anything happens to Sanchez (injuries each of the last two years) or J Thomas, PJ is ready to go.

Khalil, Prentice and Sunderland are the ones we hope come along rapidly, so as to ease our (and coaches?) anxiety with A Thomas and Byrd.

          • Sooner 76 says:

I would not be surprised to see PJ take the corner spot by the end of the season from Jordan. Not a dig against Jordan, but PJ will be that good.

I want to see OU in the position they were when they had B Jack or D Hurst at one corner and J Fleming at the other. Two shutdown corners really help the D.

      • CS says:

I missed that then. Because, I was watching KSU, TCU highlights, mostly Dionte and Shead. But, no doubt Nila is a good player, just wondering why he couldn’t even beat Dionte, who is not as good as the others we had last year.

I think you are right about DOM. But, what is glaring in the films are most of the times DOM was not even in the correct area code, while Jordan was always there, just he could not corral the runner at the moment of contact. But, he is a very very smart player and always is near the ball.

Ahmad thomas could be a very good LB imo, he hits viciously and a good run player, but FS, god save us.

        • soonerthunder says:

Heard Jordan is up from 222 last yr to 250 this year. sounds like TOO much to me. From what both Stoops said several times last year Dom was always in the right position and was smart. AThomas will always be a safety and will be better with better recognition and communication and experience this year. Watch, he’ll be a lot better this year, however, he still will probably get beat out by Haughton by year’s end, IMO. He’s too light for LB.

          • SoonerMGB56 says:

J Evans is listed at 239 on the depth chart.

And from what I saw, he was already better at wading through the trash and filling the hole, v Dom. Dom always seemed to get caught up in the traffic, and made contact while standing still or moving backward. Add that to his light weight, and I’ll bet you most of his tackles were 7+ yards up field.

Jordan was better at meeting the runner in the hole, and if he went backward, it was only for a couple.
            JMHO.

          • soonerthunder says:

Teddy Lehman said yesterday he was at 250 and he thought he’d gained too much. If it’s 240 I think that’s good. If it’s 250 I agree with teddy

        • Matt says:

In reference to your Ahmad Thomas concerns, please see 2012 and the improvement in Javon Harris from the previous season.

      • soonerthunder says:

Not only did Nila represent himself well all year at guard, but we had a plethora of excellent, experienced guards he was competing with. I’m not sure we have ever had an OU team with more depth at guard than we did last year.

    • Sooner 76 says:

I think Amad’s biggest issue is not speed of running, but speed of processing information and reacting to it. He was very slow at helping the CBs on the deep passes.

  • Nate Broadus says:

This is the time of year where hope and uncertainty get wrapped up in one tortilla.

So many young cats are going to play, and that, typically, means one of two things.

1.) OU has happened onto some excellent immediate contributors, which usually means the team could be very good for years.

    or

2.) The new contributors are better than what was already here, which means that play on the field could get ugly, at times.

Based purely on the word going around during the off season, it sounds like these freshmen aren’t just out there because the other guys suck. It sounds like some of them just have “it.”

Ordinarily, this many freshmen starting would leave me grasping for some blood pressure medication; this time, I’m as excited for a season opener as I’ve been in the last 15 years. I haven’t been this jacked for a season opener since ’01.

    • CS says:

This is true, it would go either ways, 2010 was a season I remember we had a lot of freshman come in and immediately contribute (Stills, Finch, Brennan, Colvin, Corey Nelson, Gabe, Trey).

    • Stephen Dale says:

and a very small senior class with few real contributors opens a lot of playing time for youngsters as well……

    • Sooner 76 says:

Very young in the secondary, still feeling the effects of poor recruiting by Willie Martinez. No seniors, only 1 RS junior (Sanchez) who was recruited by Mike immediately after arriving.

Last year’s secondary class appears to be awesome. Excited about this year’s (2016) verbals so far.

Depth chart reveals poor recruiting and/or development by Norvell at WR. His guys could always block well, however.

Only 2 of Bedenbaugh’s classes (2014 and 2015) are on campus, so it’s early for his guys as well. His first class was: Dalton, Alvarez, Paul, Frison, and Brown (plus Natrell Curtis who didn’t qualify). Not too shabby.

Now, if only Grundy could recruit a decent RB or 2 (jest).

  • Brian says:

Would be kinda awkward if Eboh commits to Texas with OU coaches in attendance.

  • Fear The Magic says:

Does anyone know if Eboh planned to announce his commitment on Friday before he was offered by Texas?
It seems pretty clear that if the plan to announce was in before the Texas offer then hes OU and if it was after then hes 90% Texas.

  • Jason Vos says:

If Eboh had already made up his mind to go to OU b4 Texas offered, I don’t see how he all of a sudden ends up at Texas just 2 days after they offered.

I might be wrong but Eboh seems like the kind who thinks things through and does not make rash decisions. Like I said I might be wrong, but I dont see how a Texas offer can all of a sudden sway him from committing after only 2 days.

    We will see I guess.

  • Ryan says:

I’m not that excited about Eboh. I’d rather have Jordan Parker.

  • j l says:

Yep, UT boards are reporting momma wants him to commit to UT, and soon. Sucks, but momma usually wins out in these scenarios.

    • Glocal Sooner says:

My take from yesterday’s open post about him receiving a UT offer made it sound like we need to be resigned to the fact that UT is in the lead. With the news today that he’s committing soon, seems like a slam dunk that he’s committing to UT. When I read the OP yesterday, I crossed him off the list.

    • Stephen Dale says:

she probably got a new job in Austin——this week.

  • SoonerfanTU says:

I hope PJ can play a lot against Tulsa. Should be a game OU controls from the start, and Tulsa is going to run a spread and throw it around, so it would be a perfect game to get PJ some game action against the spread. Get him ready for Big 12 play.

    • EasTex says:

We will need depth and experienced DBs in conference play.

      • SoonerfanTU says:

Yep. A lot of freshman and young guys in the two deep for the secondary. Also a lot of talent. I like that unit going forward, although, I said that same thing when we signed Thomas/Byrd, and I’ve been a little underwhelmed by the both of them.

        • EasTex says:

I saw some improvement with Thomas and Byrd late in the season, with the coaching change I think we will see improvement in the entire secondary.

      • Stephen Dale says:

        yep…

  • Birddawg says:

    Hello everyone,
Do you think we can get either/both PJ and Kahlil to make an impact on this team this year?
They are regarded as the top recruits last year.
I don’t know if it makes sense or not. But I would like to see one of these guys play NB and move Steven parker SS.
PJ getting 1st team reps as a true freshmen seems encouraging.

  • Jason Vos says:

If we dont get Eboh, is it too late to go back to that safety from CA?

  • BoomerDave says:

I just don’t understand why both Quick and Humphrey all of a sudden can’t catch the ball. They caught everything thrown to them in their Hudl videos!

  • Jofield says:

One thing that people should keep in mind about our young DBs is that we really don’t play a high octane passing attack until Oct 24 vs TT. The three best passing teams in the Big 12 (Baylor, TCU, OSWho) we play the last three weeks of the year. This sets up nicely for getting our younger (more talented) DBs experience.

My youngest sister calls me last night to inform me that she has planned her daughters birthday party at her house this Saturday evening. WTF? I asked politely. πŸ™‚ She says I can crank up the radio broadcast on the surround sound or purchase the game from her house….decisions, decisions.

    • Mason says:

Both??? Buy the game on PPV, mute the TV, and crank up Toby and Merv!

    • Billy Jackson says:

Don’t feel bad. My wife’s good friend has a son with a bd party and then her little nephew has one, too. I’m trying to be the good husband, but c’mon, man….. A. it’s the day I train shoulders, B. and most importantly, it’s f-in’ gameday!

    • Dustin says:

Family comes first. That being said, buy the game at your sister’s and bring the party to you. Help cultivate the next generation of Sooners.

      • Billy Jackson says:

You just made me think of the original Vacation movie where Chevy Chase stands with his family, acknowledging the Grand Canyon for about 10 seconds and says “let’s go”.

Here, honey….happy birthday….now go play and let me watch OU…..

        • Dustin says:

Nah, man. Bring all the kiddos in the living room and have them gather around the tv. They’ll thank you later.

          • Bob Edwards says:

If it’s like my house the wife never wanted to have the kids in the room. All the screaming and yelling would upset them. I can get pretty loud too.

    • MoJoOkie says:

I’d say it’s pretty obvious that my relatives know me a little better than yours do you. Mine have their own little invite conversations: “MoJo, would you like to _____ during OU’s game,” “No!” “Oh, OK, maybe next time,” “No!” “Ok, we’ll talk later.”

    • EasTex says:

      Go early…leave early.

I just got off the phone with Dish Network, because I could not order the game from my receiver. The game is $39.99 and is in HD! Yes, it has been ordered!

    • Bart Young says:

So you had to call? Good to know. I haven’t been able to find the channel on any of the viewing guides.

      • Slim Sooner says:

I found it on Dish 458 but time is off and mine doesn’t say it’s HD. Think cost is $39.99. I’m calling today.

        • Bart Young says:

Great! Thanks. I remember seeing the channel in another thread but I couldn’t find it when I went back to look. Much appreciated.

          • eastoksooner says:

It is listed on Dish channel 458 but not HD. Dish channel 469 lists the game as HD. Both are $39.99 Not sure it matters but I’m going with 469 HD.

      • Golfluvr13 says:

Yes, I called and complained that I had the same problem last year (not being able to order online or from my receiver), they said they have a cable I can get to plug my cell phone into my hopper and order it. I said why would I do that when my hopper is plugged in to my internet connection with an ethernet cable. DOH!

    • Slim Sooner says:

Was what you ordered on channel 458 or another Dish channel? I’m fixing to call.

      • Golfluvr13 says:

Sorry, I had to drive for several hours yesterday. What I ordered will be in both HD and SD. They said ordering the game it will show on both channels.

Knowing they will have the full replay at midnight Monday has impacted my decision to listen on the radio.
Not sure if holakyle will have highlights this year after he wussed out on OU after the baylor game.

          • Rick says:

I messaged him about that last year on LT asking him why. He seems to be quite talented editiing vids. I never got a response. I don’t know if there was some sort of legal problem that he was threatened with or what.

          • EasTex says:

He could have said so if there was a legal issue.
Some people asked him WTF in the comments section of his last highlight after he started posting screen shots of his video games.
            I think he wussed out.

          • Rick says:

Some people just have a natural gift for certain things, he did some of the best amature vids I have ever watched.

          • EasTex says:

He certainly did. From his first year in 2010 his highlight videos improved each year. Very talented editor, but disappointed the many fans he had built up with quitting on the Sooners. I cancelled my subscription to his channel.

      • Goz says:

As an OU fan but a BYU grad I have to agree. My freshman year SI ran a cover article labeling BYU the most hated team in America. I don’t think much has changed in that regard.

      1. LSU. I hated them even before MindLes Miles arrived so you can just imagine how I feel about them now.

      3. OSU – For obvious reasons
      4. Texas – See #3

          • EasTex says:

Never heard it called that, always called it Goooh.

          • JB says:

I lived in Louisiana and I never heard anyone pronounce it as “gooks”. I just sick of seeing Geaux Tigers everywhere.

          • boomersooner says:

Well I doubt many people in Louisiana make fun of LSU

          • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

LOL! I just about fell out of my chair laughing at that.

          • EasTex says:

That’s the famous Sports Illustrated photo of the LSU “Chinese Bandit” defense that led them to a natty in 1958. They gave up less than a hundred yards per game.

          • boomersooner says:

Hahaha. No. We used to beat the tar out of a couple frats after they’d start their mouths running. Most were ok. Some just needed that little extra lesson

          • Brad Warren says:

My fraternity at OU was great. We had epic parties. The only big fights we got in were with rival houses for firing golf balls at 2am through their windows. Good times!

          • JB says:

The only “fight” I recall was when a rival house decided they were going to start some stuff with us and it was just us pledges out front working on a party setup. Our whole house emptied and a guy who was one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet (but was quite large) ran straight to the head of the pack and confronted the other house’s vocal leader. The members from the other house quickly retreated, but the one guy kept talking smack to our guy, turned around and saw his bros had left him, so he started walking backwards, talking out his ear hole.

He would have been absolutely crushed by our guy, so it was a smart decision to leave.

      • Doobie74OU says:

I would bet that Baylor has moved from one of the most loved to most hated programs by OU fans over the past couple years. I have a hard time putting them in my top 5 because they were just so good to us for so long! We were 20 and 0 against them at one time. LSU, Miami, USC, Oregon, and osu in some order for my top 5

        • Sooner 76 says:

But they are such a dirty team, I’ve lost respect for them, even before the sexual assault convinction issue.

        • Clint says:

Baylor only proved they could beat Josh Heupel. Now they have to prove they can actually beat Oklahoma. Bennett read Heupel’s offense like a book. He will not have such a luxury this season.

    • Sooner 76 says:

ND is way too down the list. They are beneath contempt.

        LOL! Nice one, Rick.

        • Rick says:

          • Rick says:

I’m very wary of the (conspiracy theory coming) possible plot of the TFB writers, to make us all TFB junkies, and control our thoughts to the very possibility of anxious anticipation of the upcoming daily news, OP, and practice or game notes, in no specific order.

          • Jed says:

Well, crap, now THAT cat’s out of the bag.

    • ouwooferman says:

Like the list, I have to add Oregon and Penn St.

    • Jed says:

First, although they are generically covered, Miami needs special attention. Then we musn’t ignore BYU, they are hate-worthy. Mizzery deserves some hatred, as well. And, finally, both Boston College and Boston U on the grounds that their fans are douche bags and thus the teams must suffer our hatred.
That pretty well covers any holes in the original.

      • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

All great points. Missouri just missed the cut for me. But definitely in the Top 15.

        • Jed says:

Mind you, their T-Shirts commemorating the burning of Lawrence, KS to the ground were instant, and worthy, classics.

          • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

Whoa. You’ve piqued my interest there, my friend. I must consult the Google.

          • Jed says:

Pre-Civil War Pro Slavery Missourians burned abolitionist Lawrence in an attempt to intimidate Kansans.
In essence it was two groups of sh*theads in a street fight. So, amusing for onlookers.

    • woofman says:

Could not agree more with #10. We are SOONERS living in Bentonville area and not only do they believe their program has the tradition of OU, Alabama, USC, etc. They also beat their chest while shouting S-E-C as if they were founding members. How about actually winning the conference just once before using that as your pathetic cry of greatness!! Sorry, alot of caffeine today and needing to vent!!

      • Randy says:

        I couldn’t agree more..

      • stfaulk says:

I couldn’t agree more. I teach in De Queen, AR. I can not tell you how many times I tell pig fans to root for your team and quit jumping on the conference coat tails.

    • Malicong says:

      1. Texsa (any longtime OU will have them near the top)
2a-2o. Any SEC team, especially the ones coached by Nicky Satan
      3. OkSU (at least they have Oklahoma in the name)
      4. tOSU (I am actually a Michigan fan as well)
      5. USC
      6. Oregon (the onside still gets me fired up)
      7. Florida St (this would have been #3 a few years ago but they ended the SEC shampionships)
      8. Notre Dame
      9. Miami
      10. Baylor (this could be higher in a few years if they can sustain the lofty perch)

    • ALar03 says:

Does anyone hate Boise State anymore?? Maybe its just me but they would have to be in my top 5 all because of 1 game!! Still not over it yet, just like I’m not over the screw job we got at Oregon!

    • Cush Creekmont says:

I MUST point to flaws in the lists of some of you great TFB fans & posters. The TOP FIVE simply HAS to be:
      #1 = saxet
      #2 = shorthorns
      #3 = UTerus
      #4 = texsa
#5 = orange clad team from Austin

Now after this TOP FIVE, I can understand some variation of –

cowgirls, little-green-men, the duck-cheats, THE Ohio-Meyers, and moving up the charts from obscurity is the Baylor-Briles future convicts.

  • Birddawg says:

    Berry Tramel’s season predictions:
TCU 8-1 (owns win tie breaker with OSU)
    OSU 8-1
    Baylor 7-2
OU 7-2 ( plus a loss in the Alamo bowl 9-4 for year)
    WVU 5-4
    KSU 3-6
    Texas 3-6
    Tech 2-7
    Kansas 0-9
Dear Lawd, that is not how I had mine the last time I went through it.

    • Rick says:

Berry, is mostly an idiot, yours is probably more accurate.

    • CS says:

Not that high on OSU, more higher on KSU, rest I tend to agree, though OU will have 2-3 losses, imo.

    • Slim Sooner says:

Boo, Berry! Think Boo Berry has been toking something funky.

      • Rick says:

The funny thing is, I think Berry doen’t even have to be toking anything to be off. He’s just so…Berry!

    • Malicong says:

It is not too far from what I had with the big exception being little brother. Does he really expect a team that was WORSE on D than OU (and we know how bad that was) last year with a shaky O-line and nothing proven in the backfield to win two of three vs Baylor, TCU, and OU and beat Texas in Austin and WVU in Morgantown? They could certainly do some of those things, but ALL of them? That would put OSU at 11-1.
A 7-6 team that was closer to 4-8 than 9-4 all of a sudden is a top 5-7 team in the country? He and Traber are way to high on OSU. They are placing way to much on playing TCU, Baylor, and OU in Stillwater. They are no better than 8-4 or 9-3. I have them at 8-4.

    • Bart Young says:

I honestly believe Berry just trolls OU fans to generate controversy. He isn’t dumb; he knows what the result will be when he publishes drivel like that prediction.

    • Sooner 76 says:

The media in Oklahoma is so intimidated by the crybaby osu fans that they don’t dare state the obvious about them. 8-1, no chance.

So Berry thinks we lose to Tennessee as well. I don’t think so.

    • Fear The Magic says:

Trammel must have become drinking buddies with Pat Jones.

    • Zack says:

I’m just not high on osu. They’re being set up to disappoint a lot of people around the Oklahoma media. They were one play away from 5-7 and that one play happens to be one of the worst coaching decisions I can remember in college football.
I’m also not high on tcu.

      • Jofield says:

And that one play(er) is no longer there.

      • BoomerDave says:

Don’t forget, KU was a Hill kickoff return away from beating them last year as well. That being said, I’m drinking their Kool-Aid this year. Schedule sets up great for them. I predict a 10-2 type season, although I’m hoping for a 0-12 one.

        • Zack says:

See I don’t buy the schedule sets up theory. It set up perfect for us last year and we dropped 3 at home. I think they could finish 3rd at best but also as low as 7th in the big 12. And that 7th place finish doesn’t involve a wheels fall off scenario I just think they’re about even with Texas, wvu and ksu.
For ou they could finish anywhere from 1st to 6th or 7th also but for ou to finish that low I think stoops would have to completely lose this team and/or be obliterated with injuries.

          • Jofield says:

I don’t think there will be a lot of difference between #4 and #8. I think Taco Tech will be muddled in there somewhere also if their defense improves (otherwise they are a distant #8).

      • Slim Sooner says:

Yep. Osu is always gonna be osu and in reality everyone knows that, even them. They’re NEVER consistently going to be better than us. No way we lose that game last year without the fluke punt return which should never have happened. Then they kick a field goal in OT and we don’t? Bizarro twilight zone!!!! Crap happens, but 8-1 for them this year is chuckle worthy. (Shakes head in disgust.)

      • soonerthunder says:

They would have lost against KANSAS if not for a game saving play by Hill (and OU). Both games at the end. It would have 7 losses in a row and 8 total. 4-8 but for Hill in two game saving end of the game plays, 2-7 in conference. OU played with a QB completing 45% of his passes for the year, 2 TDs and 4 int. No shep, etc. OU still up by 14 with 5 minutes to go with the ball with a team that is limping. The sad thing for OSU fans is that none of them saw the game. All OSU fans had turned off the game or left the stadium and didn’t get to see them get a rare victory over OU. Funny. None I know saw the ending and the win.

  • Jeff says:

So is Oliver going to visit OU?

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

Yes he and Cleveland…didnt say when on the tweet tho

      • Boom says:

Oliver put out another one that said that was false info. Don’t think that tweet was supposed to go out. I hope Oliver comes but I have no clue. I’m sure TFB will put a list together of the folks visiting each week.

        • Fear The Magic says:

If Oliver comes TFB will probably list as “Secret Visitor”

          • BoomerDave says:

Not sure why they would call him a “secret visitor”. They’ve posted at least 3 times, as recent as yesterday, that he was going to visit. If he was in fact the “secret visitor” that didn’t want to be exposed since he was committed elsewhere, TFB has already blown his cover. I have to believe at this point the the secret visitor is someone else. Can’t think that TFB would either throw a kid under the bus or do anything to hurt OU’s chance at a stud recruit. ,

          • Boom says:

TFB didn’t. Tyrie sent a tweet out saying both were coming for the game.

          • BoomerDave says:

TFB did too! Read the update from yesterday’s OP and click on the links provided by Jordan or whoever. Yesterday, Jordan posted an update with Cleveland’s tweet and said something to the effect that “as Brandon has reported here and here (these are links) Oliver will be visiting……”

      • Zack says:

It’s hard to trump that. Next most hated player then? For me it’s okbah at osu. I just am tired of his hype around here. When you look at his numbers he doesn’t have as much of an affect as you would think after listening to sports radio all summer around here. I think with him it’s boom or bust. Either he makes a play in the backfield or he doesn’t make a play at all. I think striker had 2 less sacks last year but double maybe even triple the number of tackles. And yet striker had a remedial year and okbah had a AA year according to the radio.

        • Finney56 says:

Yeah, I cannot stand the Franchise because they’re all on Okbah (if that’s how you spell it) and he’s average at best…

  • RBear says:

Heard a discussion on Sports Radio on the way home today- the conversation centered around the question:

“Will OU be able to stand toe-to-toe with another team this year if it turns into a slug-fest or do they have that mentality yet?”

Most of their answers alluded to OU being one year away from being mature enough to do this but I feel differently; Does anyone else besides me think that Mighty Joe Mixon has this “put me on your back, I’ll carry you” sort of mentality? I just have a hunch that this kid has gears we haven’t seen in a long, long time and that he can be “that guy”.

    • Cush Creekmont says:

I’d say that Mr. Perine has ALREADY done that and is fully capable of doing it going forward.

      • RBear says:

I agree that Perine showed us a lot last year but I think Joe has the ability to make big plays untouched whereas Perine looks for cantact and is more likely to go down- Joe can get it done in short order.

Not to slight Perine or anyone else on the team, just thinking Joe’s skills are out of this world.

        • Kevin Burger says:

I’m liking Perine for red zone efficiency though. When there’s not a lot of room to work with, I like his odds.

    • Fear The Magic says:

I think that both Mixon and Mayfield have that mentality on offense and Striker on defense.
We should be in good hands attitude wise.

    • Bob Edwards says:

How would we know his mentality? All I’ve seen of the guy is some high school highlights and a couple of spottings on the clips OU releases of practice. Let’s at least see him in a game against over matched Akron befor we declare him the next great thing. For all we know he may be more Marcus Dupree than Adrian Peterson.

      • Fear The Magic says:

Actually Bob we do know something about his mentality.

This is why I mentioned below that I think Mixon will bring more to the team than just his undeniable physical attributes.

        http://www.scout.com/college/oklahoma/story/1581674-joe-mixon-brings-infectious-energy-to-ou

        • Bob Edwards says:

That article tells us nothing about his mentality in a game. He’s a great teammate. He works hard. He does well in practice. yada yada. Sounds like Trevor Knight. No one here is calling him the next great thing.

Doing your thing in practice is a long way from doing it in a game in front of 80K+ people when the game is on the line. Some people wilt under that stress and some shine.

How does this kid handle pressure? I hate to bring this up, but the only case I know where he was under stress was the off field incident. His handling of that sure didn’t turn out well.

Look, I believe Mixon will be a good player. He’s got all the physical tools. But being great is about how you use those tools under pressure. I haven’t seen that from Mixon because I have never seen him play under pressure. Let’s at least see him some game situations before we crown him all world.

          • Fear The Magic says:

This Statement tells me all I need to know about his mentality.

“β€œIt’s one of his most impressive characteristics,” said running backs coach Jay Boulwareabout Mixon’s energy. β€œSome guys are quiet leaders. Others lead by example. And then there are others who pick others up. He’s one of those enthusiastic guys that makes plays and is the first to congratulate”.

As for doing it in a game all we have to go by is how he was in High School and from everything that Ive seen and read he was most certainly a kid who energized his other teammates.
Will he be that way in front of 80,000 fans? We wont know until we see him in action but going by his past history and by what the coaches and teammates are saying about him my bet is that he’ll add a lot to the team with his attitude and mentality.

btw Im not crowning him all world but I think he’ll be very special.

          • Bob Edwards says:

Yeah but you’ve kind of changed the original subject. At least as I understand it. We were talking carrying the team on his back. For most people that means with his play not through motivating the other players to play better. That’s something you can only tell from seeing them in game.

          • Fear The Magic says:

I got the impression that by saying “carry the team on his back” it that he meant overall as in ” help lead the team to a win in a toe to toe fight”. Meaning in all aspects both on the field and through his positive energy.
Personally I believe Joe will be that kind of player for OU but the good news is that we only have to wait 3 more days to find out!

          • Soonerfandave84 says:

He might be. Finally able to find out Saturday well next Saturday.

          • Bob Edwards says:

As far as leadership I get what you are saying and agree that he has the potential to do so. But, when most people use the term “put the team on his shoulders” they mean in their play not through talking to them. There are some players that just take over a game through their play. Perine did that last year against WVU. I won’t argue it anymore because I wasn’t trying to bash Mixon. I just don’t think you can tell how a player will play in a pressure situation until you see them do.

          • Fear The Magic says:

Im pretty sure that he was that kind of guy in high school but again we’ll soon find out. At this point its all conjecture.

          • Bob Edwards says:

            And that was my point.

          • RBear says:

Bob, I understand that you have a lot to add here and for the most part, I enjoy reading your posts but not every post requires a dissertation.

          • boomersooner says:

I didn’t read everything word for word but it seems Bob’s point is let’s not crown someone something before they’ve played a down. The mental midgets will be on here crucifying them if they don’t live up to the hype

          • Fear The Magic says:

No ones been crowning Mixon. The original question implied do you THINK he’ll be able to carry the team on his back. Some of us think that he will thats all lol.

          • boomersooner says:

And it turned into people catching feelings because someone else took a phrase a different way. We all hope he’s better than peanut butter but some don’t want people worshipping at a kids altar before they’ve played a down because that’s how it all starts. That’s my point and 2 cents. Not saying y’all are saying he’s going to the house on every touch but this is how that stuff starts. Tomorrow we’ll wake up and he’s a french model

          • Fear The Magic says:

Well he can be a French model on the interent if he wants to be.

          • boomersooner says:

            Haha. That’s a good point

          • Soonerfandave84 says:

Hopefully he lives up to the hype. I agree let’s see it first

          • soonerthunder says:

A RB doesn’t choke in front of 80k. There is no pressure once they get the ball. Do what they do naturally and best. It’s QB’s that have the pressure. Unbelievable pressure.

          • RBear says:

Oh good God… give me a break.

This guy (Mixon) leaves me with the impression that he’s a leader and that he would, with that kind of infectious energy, impart to the team that he is willing to “put the team on his shoulders” (CLICHE).

I happen to believe that he is capable of doing so and asked if anyone else was like-minded.

            Frickin’ semantics police.

Go ahead and pick that apart too if you’re so inclined.

          • soonerthunder says:

I was criticized for using the word “plethora.”

          • hOUligan says:

NO, man. Not at all. Just having some fun and it was an opp to put up that clip from one of my fav movies. Sorry if I offended but it was meant in fun.

          • Tenkillersooner says:

I completely agree Bob let mixon show his worth on the field. That being said the kid reminds me so much of Joe Washington. (although he is bigger than Joe ) I can’t. Help to be excited to see what he will accomplish this year for the sooners.

        • RBear says:

          BINGO!

          Thanks FTM.

        • Oscar says:

True. He has demonstrated a superb work ethic and comes to every practice with a fire to excel. (as I understand from several coach’s comments)

    • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

To be persnickety, you’re describing that Joe would tell another OU player, “put me (Joe) on your (other person) back, I’ll (Joe) carry you (other person)”?

I understand what you mean. Thus, I don’t know or think that yet. If we’re talking RBs, then I’d say Samaje would be that person. Even then, the anecdotes about what OU’s offense will look like suggests that no one person will put everyone else on their back and carry them.

If OU gets into a boxer brawl, then I’d expect the defense to win the game. Until I see this version of OU’s defense, I will reserve judgment about OU being able to win tight games.

  • Billy says:

So is the game going to be free in Spanish again? Also, I can’t remember, was it live in Spanish or released after? Thanks.

  • blaster1371 says:

Does anyone know what kind of offense Akron runs?

  • SamSooner says:

I just watched Joe Mixon’s Hudl videos. He is going to be special and rare. As I was watching him, Barry Sanders came to mind. Here’s what I mean: it appears his upper and lower body are doing separate things. Contrary to what your eyes are seeing, his upper and lower body are working in unison.

He has a rare talent of baiting the defender into making the first move. Once that happens, it academic.

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

If he’s half as good as the hype he will win 2 straight Heisman trophies

    • Zack says:

I want to believe joe is already great but I have to see if first. His highlights were impressive but I have seen some question the level of competition there. Also usually with these great running backs you hear sub 4.4 low 4.3 forty times and with joe I’ve never seen it talked about that he’s sub 4.5 so I’m trying to keep my expectations in check. All that said I hope he is better than demarco since Switzer said he’s the best back he’s seen since AD

      • Fear The Magic says:

Zack all we have to go on are the various quotes by his coaches and teammates that hes “unstoppable”.
I think thats a pretty good endorsement.

        • Soonerfandave84 says:

It is. I fully agree he has the ability to be amazing just need to see it with the lights on

        • Zack says:

But he’s unstoppable against the ou defense that’s not allowed to hit him or Perine. I hope he is a combo of Peterson and Murray…we’ve just been burned on 5 star backs a little too much. Calhoun, Williams, then clay and ford were contributors but not really enough to live up to their hype.

      • SamSooner says:

What’s up, Zack. I hope things are good. You make some good points.
I know he has to do the work to be great. I was just giving a perspective from my observations. He is very good at making defenders make the first move. I saw that over and over again.

But I understand the cautiously optimistic approach. I get you. That’s fair.

        • Zack says:

Things are good just waiting for Saturday. I hope he breaks out vs Tennessee l don’t expect many carries this week and I hope they only give him and Perine 12-15 carries each then let brooks and Anderson get about 12-15 each since I don’t expect them to get many carries on a big stage.

      • oumike23 says:

I have seen some practice footage in pads…trust me, you won’t be disappointed!

  • Fear The Magic says:

For all those just now coming on to TFB, welcome to Joe Mixon night.
You have about 20 minutes of reading to do.
    Enjoy.

  • Daryl says:

That 2107 Rb can straight up fly! Put him on the track team too.

  • stfaulk says:

Extremely excited for this weekend!! Really enjoy reading everyone’s comments and insight. Maniacs, y’all are the best!

  • Coach JK says:

Brainiacs, I need your help!!!! There is a young man in Children’s Hospital named Easton Petersen. Coach Stoops and Coach Riley and many players have visited him and he has been to practice thanks to a lot of effort from his parents. He is a huge Sooner fan and he is gonna be unable to watch the Akron game on pay per view. If anyone knows this situation please let me know something, I would be honored to pay for this young man to see the game. Thanks

    • John Garner says:

God bless you Coach! I’m in CA or I’d advise you. Hope you succeed.

    • rphokc says:

just a thought, call the hospital and see what the tv hookup situation is and explain your generous idea……..a/o give the ou athletic office a call and perhaps they could help…….hope you’re successful, very kind of you…….thxs

    • Kuzi says:

I think there is an online pay per view also. I will look in to it.

      • Kuzi says:

Well, it seems that the online pay per view is not available in Oklahoma. Bummer.

        • Coach JK says:

Thank you for all the help. I was sure hoping to get something done but I can’t seem to find a way to make this happen.

    • ColoradoSooner says:

I found this site. This help you?

    • Kuzi says:

Hospitals don’t often have cable or satellite that you can purchase pay-per-view events unfortunately. I don’t know for sure about OU Children’s, but every hospital I’ve ever worked in had a limited cable subscription. I had a couple of thoughts:
      1. There is an area called “The Zone” at OU Children’s that might, stress might, have access to more than just the limited number of channels. If you get it for that area, other kids can watch too. I’m sure there are more sick kids who wish that they could see the game.
      2. You could get the PPV yourself, tape it, burn it to a dvd, and take it to him. Yeah, it’s not live, but it is something.

Sorry, I have no other good ideas. You could try contacting the athletic dept and seeing if there was any go-around on the online streaming option. If they would make an exception for a kid in the hospital for the rule that it can’t be streamed in Oklahoma.
