Fall Camp Notes | Impact True Freshmen

Image via OU Football Facebook

As many of you are aware, Oklahoma scrimmaged this morning and I’m continuing to work on tracking down some notes on what went down. Once I get something substantial, I’ll either post it here or in tomorrow’s Open Post. But I did speak with a few sources earlier about yesterday’s indoor practices, and some of what I heard prompted me to want to discuss some of the freshman on this team that could have an impact on the coming season.

– AD Miller: For some time now Miller is a guy I’ve heard about quite a bit in practices. He’s a tall, long guy that has good speed but unlike some of the other ‘big’ receivers on OU’s roster, Miller has that ability to make a sudden stop and come back to the ball. I have been told his route running ability is the most advanced of all the freshman.

* We told you yesterday about Miller hurting his ankle during on Tuesday and having to sit out the remainder of practice that day. I have also since been told Miller was held out of Wednesday’s practice as well. My assumption is he was also held out of Thursday’s scrimmage, but I am working to confirm that.

Dahu Green: Like Miller, Green has good speed as well (though not quite on the same level as Miller). However, Green appears to be particuarly adept in using his hands to keep the more physical DBs off as compared to some of his other teammates.

* I was told Green spent some time rotating in with the 1’s a little this week, but that was likely do to a number of guys missing time and/or being held out (as we’ve mentioned was the case). Related – I was told that as of last night Dede Westbrook had still yet to rejoin the team. I plan to follow up with some people, though, to see if he made it back for Thursday’s scrimmage.

Kahlil Haughton: Another guy we have spoken highly of for some time on the site, and not surprisingly Haughton has also drawn a considerable amount of praise publicly from the OU coaching staff as well. So it was fitting that I heard something rather interesting yesterday regarding Haughton.

* Evidently he has been playing quite a bit of nickel of late. It would seem, as of now, he has taken over Will Johnson’s spot as the 2nd team nickel.

* Somewhat related, I have been told Hatari Byrd continues to have some assignment struggles.

* How are those two things connected? I can’t be certain, but I get the sense the coaches may be working to develop Haughton as a nickel. So that if need be, they can move Steven Parker back to strong safety in the nickel package — which could very well serve as their primary base defense this season — and then move Ahmad Thomas back to free safety.

* As of right now, however, it continues to be Parker at nickel, with Thomas and Byrd at safety. Meanwhile in the base defense (i.e. four DBs) it’s Thomas and Parker at safety. But again, I’m told that Haughton has been playing a lot of 2nd team nickel lately. If he can play that position competently, it could be a way to get the freshman on the field as a cover guy and get Parker back to SS.

Marquise Overton: Overton was a guy we mentioned last week who had really come on and had even probably passed Neville Gallimore on the depth chart. That was confirmed during the week with Bob Stoops singling out Overton’s strong play in practice.

* I spoke with someone regarding Overton yesterday, and was told that he is primarily running with the 2’s but is getting 1st team reps at times.

* He is a guy who has made significant strides during camp. One source mentioned that on the first day of camp – “he didn’t look good” but he has continued to develop and show off his quickness and ability to use his hands. While Matt Romar and Jordan Wade are still ahead of Overton, the fact he’s taking any first team reps would seem to indicate he may actually see the field this year.

– PJ Mbanasor: Yet another guy we’d heard good things about for most of the summer. Mbanasor has been running as a back up to Jordan Thomas throughout camp.

* I was told Thomas sat out yesterday (though it was not injury related) and apparently Mbanasor took all the 1st team snaps opposite Zack Sanchez.

* The expectation is that Mbanasor will play this season, which makes sense as he would almost assuredly be the first CB off the bench right now.

* I have been told he has played well throughout camp, but much like any true freshman corner he’s had his fair share of ups and downs.

– Dru Samia: I’ll be transparent here. I’m not an offensive line guy, so when I ask my sources about the OL it typically involves something to the effect of “how’s the offensive line look?” I rarely ask about a specific player. But Bill Bedenbaugh spoke so highly of him with the media earlier this week, and shortly thereafter I was told Samia had even spent some time at a couple different spots with the first team offense.

* Another freshman, albeit redshirt, Orlando Brown could be in line to open the season as the starter at left tackle, so it’s difficult for me to see OU going with two first-year players at each respective tackle spot. That said, it sure seems as though Samia has a very good chance of playing as a true freshman even if it is, barring injury, more so from a depth standpoint.

Wait……where is DeDe Westbrook? Did I miss something?

    • Jordan Esco says:

I believe he’s out dealing with some type of a personal issue.

    • LLAdamJ7 says:

I remember a mention of him taking care of a family issue about a week ago. I didn’t think it was a big deal since we never heard about it again. Family always comes first, but I do hope he is able to get back and focus on this season.

Good Stuff guys! Love reading your posts!

  • KJ1123 says:

    AND HERE WE GO!

    • Super K says:

Would love to hear your thoughts on Samia. Based on your comments in other posts I’ve noticed you’ve been following the OL closely and seem to have some good sources and insight!

      • KJ1123 says:

Here’s what I think K. Bill’s a pro at this and I think he REALLY wants to play Samia, but he’s also cognizant of the fact that Samia’s a true freshman and really I think he may not even be 18 yet. I think Samia has outplayed, outworked, out studied the guys at RT in camp, but I feel Bill will start St. John and rotate Samia in to ease him into the games. I truly believe that if Samia continues to progress he will start some games this year, either just by playing well or because the line has to get shuffled. I posted a depth chart for the OL yesterday I think, I believe that hasn’t changed and that’s the rotation they will go into the Akron game wtih barring any injuries, or any unforseen circumstances where Bill has to shuffle the line. Samia for the most part has done a great job, but he’s still young and hasn’t stepped on the big stage yet, however it’s still impressive for a true freshman (and not even the most highly ranked freshman) to be able to come in and get PT his first year. How crazy would that be for two first year players to start at the tackles over the upperclassmen?

        • hemisooner says:

it’s impressive but starting freshmen at those positions is concerning even if they are talented.

          • KJ1123 says:

I agree, but I think we’re in a good position to do so because we have experience in the senior tackles. If there was very little experience behind Samia and Brown…then i’d be extremely nervous.

          • hemisooner says:

Upperclassmen that can’t beat out Freshmen doesn’t give me too much confidence.

          • KJ1123 says:

I think phsycially, these two kids got it, it’s the mental part that needs some attention. Orlando has been around the program for a year so he’s knows what to expect, Samia’s still young and may need to mentally get over how big this is. But I dont doubt their physical tools at all. They can handle it physically.

          • hemisooner says:

Jammal Brown and Wes Simms come to mind. They were ready Physically as well and we seen what happened to them. The QB better be a good scrambler

          • KJ1123 says:

Fortunately for us, 2 of them are. 🙂

          • hemisooner says:

So Thomas will not be named starter, hahahahahahaha

          • KJ1123 says:

            Haha you cracked the code!!

          • hemisooner says:

Thanks for the info by the way.

          • Sooner 76 says:

Sims didn’t start until he was a RS freshman and Brown didn’t start until he was a RS sophomore.

          • hemisooner says:

and they struggled that first year.

          • Mr. Jones says:

Brown being a RS freshman doesn’t make me nervous at all. You develop so much that first year in the weight program. As far as Samia goes, I’ll trust in BB.

          • KJ1123 says:

Yeah Brown is a prototypical tackle, massive kid (6-7 – 6-8), long arms, 310-320 lbs, good feet, he’ll be just fine.

          • Doobie74OU says:

I don’t know anything about his background or where he comes from but Brown looks like what we call “country strong!” Some kids I grew up with that never lifted weights formally or anything but from years of working on the farm just have a natural strength about them and can tear a phonebook in half. I know Brown is massive but has that look like a Larry Allen that there is just so much power to his game! I have thought for a while that when he gets his shot he will be a good one for us!

          • KJ1123 says:

His dad was “Zeus” Sr. Monster of a tackle in the Pros. Unfortunately passed a couple of years back.

          • Stephen Dale says:

games in which OU has a large lead should serve as training time for as many of the rs/fr & true frosh as the staff can get on the field for as long as possible…….they are going to be needed later in the season…….

          • KJ1123 says:

            Agreed

          • SamSooner says:

Hemi, if they are better, it shouldn’t matter. There will always be a difference in age but better is better. I mean, look at Perine. His vision is far superior to Ross’. If Ross had Perine’s vision and patience, he’d be off to the races on every play.

          • hemisooner says:

RB is a lot different than OLine.

          • SamSooner says:

True. But the RB is the last line of protection for a QB. Miss a block and the starting QB is being carted off. You have to know your assignments. Look at the freshmen OT for Bama last year. He did well.

          • boomersooner says:

why? they’ve gotten the same coaching for the most part. learned from the same guy for the most part. this will be their 3rd yr learning from him compared to 1st for the freshmen. could be they had better coaching in high school. developed earlier. anything. sure they haven’t seen the kitchen sink of blitzes that will definitely come at them, but if they are better, they are better. start em and see what happens

          • SamSooner says:

I could not agree more. Well said.

          • hemisooner says:

            agree

          • Soonerfandave84 says:

Goes to show how bare the cupboard was when Bob started making the changes after 2011

          • hemisooner says:

            Damn Skittles

        • Soonerfandave84 says:

the best player should play, and if he needs to be eased in thats what they should do. By week 7 or 8 he will be the full time starter most likely

          • KJ1123 says:

Definitely, best player should play, I think Bill has to determine whether or not Samia is ready mentally as in, is he ready to handle the pressure. Practice is practice, gameday is a whole other level.

          • Soonerfandave84 says:

no doubt, thats why I like the ease him into game situations and let him get up to speed instead of turning him loose to learn on the fly

        • Super K says:

          Thanks KJ! Good stuff!

        • Doobie74OU says:

I really like your take on this! I think he might should rotate OL quite a bit in the Akron game because there is nobody on that team that can physically overwhelm them play after play and all these young guys need that game experience! Nothing better than playing in a real game and no way to simulate it in practice.

  • Jc says:

What’s up with DeDe? That’s the first I’ve heard of him being gone.

    • Jesse says:

If you’re a twitter person just check out some of his tweets from a few days ago. If not, it’s a personal issue. Something with one of his children.

  • cdzendolet says:

    Boomer Sooner!!

  • Mark slavin says:

What about dallis Todd haven’t heard anything about him

  • Kyle Boone says:

Quick poll : Who does everyone want to see at QB? Mayfield, Knight, or Thomas?

    • James Paul says:

My vote would be for Thomas. I think he has the most upside, and will allow our offense to flourish the most considering the multitude of potential playmakers. With that said, however, I would support whomever Riley picks because I have faith in his knowledge of the system and what he is looking for in his QB choice.

    • Doobie74OU says:

Hard without seeing them in a game but I “want” to see Knight because he is the most athletic and gives the defense the most things to have to prepare for but I “think” we will see Thomas cause if everything is as equal as they say then I start the guy that will be here 3 years.

    • Jesse says:

Thomas. But whoever they pick I’ll be okay with. I trust the coaches to give the players/fans the best opportunity for wins.

    • Mr. Jones says:

Hey Boone! I would have said Knight at the beginning of the summer but now I’m leaning towards Thomas.

    • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

      I don’t care. Just win.

    • John Garner says:

The guy who best operates the offense and gets us into the end zone.

    • Lane Gilstrap says:

      Anyone but knight.

    • soonersince57 says:

      Thomas

    • Big Higg says:

      Bradford

    • SoonerMGB56 says:

      Thomas.

    • SoonerOracle737 says:

I’d like to hedge a little bit. Have Mayfield start the season and play 5-6 games and have Cody perform mop-up duty. Then when Mayfield gets dinged up replace him with an advancing and much improved Cody Thomas.

    • Sarosh Nizami says:

Sugar Bowl Knight (although seriously I’m behind whoever Riley/Stoops decide to hand the keys of this offensive engine to)

    • DCinAZ says:

Just heard that Thomas threw 3 picks today and Knight threw 1. I think we’re screwed.

      • boomersooner says:

there ya go. don’t let em play a game. just go with what pops in your head

        • DCinAZ says:

Saw them play games last year…….and all they did was throw picks.

          • Boom says:

Saw Manning and Brady do the same last year but most think they will be 1st ballot HOF. Are you Stephen Dale’s brother/cousin?

          • DCinAZ says:

What? That comparison makes zero sense.

          • Boom says:

QB throw interceptions, nature of the game – Analogy.
Pitcher gonna throw pitches which get taken yard – happens

My point, OL miss blocks, Defenders miss tackles, stuff happens and no one is perfect.

          • DCinAZ says:

The discussion isn’t about individual perfection but okay.

          • Boom says:

It’s about throwing interceptions, right? If that is the case, there wont be a QB who goes through a season on any level without an interception. That is my point. We have some QBs trying to make something happen in practice, get picked off and we’re screwed. Help me understand your point.

          • yungkobra says:

Agreed, pretty sure Manning and Brady are not competing to start. A better comparison would be Ryan Mallett and Brian Hoyer. If either of those guys throws three picks I would bet money they would be out of the running.

          • boomersooner says:

Yep. That’s all they did. Every single throw

          • EasTex says:

And they will never, ever improve.

    • EasTex says:

The one that the coaches choose.

    • Sooner 76 says:

Been going through that almost every day. Yesterday, I thought that the discussion got nasty with certain posters (no names) ganging up on another poster and whitewashing a player to the point that they were being disingenuous;.

  • Doobie74OU says:

WOW Orlando Brown and Dru Samia getting 1st team reps is amazing! I thought for sure St John had LT locked down with Daimler backing him up(now that Frison is out) and Orlando Brown was going to fight Farniok for RT. It is crazy that we have so much good young talent on the OL. This line only looses Darlington, St. John, & Farniok of which only one is a starter right now. That bodes well for the future!

  • Mr. Jones says:

Have to wonder how much of Overton’s development is attributable to Diron Reynolds. Could be a great sign for the future of our D-Line!

  • Jason Vos says:

If Brown and Samia start, they better let them play all 4 qtrs vs Akron. They’ll need all the experience they can get heading into the Tennessee game.

But it makes sense, if the senior OT’s are not that much better than the 2 freshmen, then it would make sense to play the freshmen and let them gain the necessary experience for next season

  • Matt says:

Man I was really hopeful for the secondary this season…don’t like hearing they may have
to completely reshuffle and potentially put a true freshman in a cover position…Even
Parker, as much of a stud as he is, didn’t do too well as a true freshman

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

mike stoops said it way back when, they were going to need the freshman to come in and play

    • hemisooner says:

very troublesome. At this point I would rather have this lineup CB sanchez CB J Thomas with PJ backing them up. SS Parker FS Haughton NB Will Johnson

    • Super K says:

I think the secondary will be better. Corners are a year better. Parker and Ahmad are a year better. And Hatari is a year older as well so either he will play or they’ll find someone better. Hard to see this secondary not being much improved.

    • Bill Holder says:

As bad as the secondary played last year I wouldn’t be opposed to a complete overhaul.

  • John Garner says:

Check out Samia’s highlight film. It’s easy to see why he’s gettng looked at so hard. The kid is a beast. A real finisher.

    http://www.hudl.com/athlete/1605570/dru-samia.

    • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

Would not want to be blocked by Dru, even with pads on.

      • John Garner says:

Really! I know it’s a highlight film, but the pancakes are very impressive. The guy blocks to the whistle.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

Haughton will have a permanent role in the defense by the RRSO. I won’t be surprised to see Mbanasor in the dime package either when they run it

  • Dustin Brasel says:

Guess I missed it. What’s up with Westbrook?

  • Sooner Ray says:

Que is gonna be a beast. First I’ve heard of the DeDe situation, we NEED that guy to be here.

Can anyone ID the Sooners in this photo from today’s scrimmage?

  • Matt says:

Haven’t heard this much about freshman in the secondary since ’05 when Reggie and Nic Harris both got to start some games.

  • thebigdroot says:

I would like to hear “Tapper is becoming a beast”. Need Sugar Bowl play for the entire year.

    • soonerthunder says:

I think the tendency is to talk about the newcomers every yr, but I do expect him to play at that level or better this yr. His problems were taken care of so I see no problems for him in that regard this yr. But, I agree, that SHOULD be a welcome “addition” to this yr’s team.

    • EasTex says:

Coach Reynolds speaks of him glowingly, especially his leadership.

    • DCinAZ says:

If he has any desire to play in the NFL, he better be a beast this year.

  • Randy says:

I hope we don’t mess up the Secondary positions AGAIN !!

  • KJ1123 says:

Someone I haven’t seen talked about much but I know is getting alot of rotation is Matt Dimon.

    • Randy says:

Probably the back up to either 3 or 7 techs. Him and Orso. I don’t know if I expect him to be great but I expect he will play a lot. Really both.

      • Randy says:

        Sorry 3 and 5.

        • Sooner 76 says:

Randy, he’s too small for the 3-tech, IMO. Probably backing up Tapper at the 5 spot, either that or he’s one of the 4 rotating at DE in the 3-4 alignment.

          • Randy says:

I agree, just has a lot of experience and I would trust him in either. Plus he plays at 100MPH

  • Jason Vos says:

Blessed to have been able to attend my baby girl’s surgery thanks to the support of the OU coaching staff and my teammates. Relieved to say she is officially back home and in recovery mode. Now off to Norman to get ready to take care of business. Thanks to everyone for your prayers. They are greatly appreciated.

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Soonersports: Still waiting on TFB but…

The offense found the end zone twice, with both of those touchdowns occurring on the final two drives. Junior quarterback Trevor Knight connected with sophomore receiver Jeffery Mead on a seven-yard scoring play over the top of the defense. Junior signal-caller Baker Mayfield then found freshman receiver Dahu Green on a similar play the next possession after a length-of-the-field drive.

The defense looked really good today,” he said. “The defense is set up where we can be very disruptive. A lot of us were in the backfield today. I think we’re well ahead of where we thought we were going to be. I like our first team a lot. I like our rotation and we have a lot of depth. I’m expecting really big things.”

The Sooners will hold their final practice of training camp on Friday. Classes begin on Monday.

  • Rick says:

Is it my imagination or is SoonerSports.com improving….just a little….maybe….?

  • Defend Colfax says:

    Any walk ons making noise?

  • Jason Vos says:

One player that doesn’t get enough talk is Obo Okoronkwo. He is the most improved player on defense according to Mike Stoops.

He also had multiple sacks today and pressured on a lot of other plays. He is a pass rush nightmare for OT’s

  • EasTex says:

Thanks for the notes, Super K. I think I can safely say we are all anxiously awaiting your scrimmage notes.
Regarding young Zeus at LT, if he is the starter then he has earned it. The motivation he must have to go to Knoxville and kick booty might be what has helped inspire him after the stunt they tried to pull on him.
As for the other young players mentioned as possibly seeing the field, if they have earned it I don’t care how old they are or how long they have been on campus irrespective of the position. True freshmen start at this level all across the nation in good programs every year.

  • Cush Creekmont says:

Man! I finally had to give up and work. So after waiting around two hours, I manage to leave right before a camp notes. Thanks K for the work – But I need a better warning system.

  • Jason Vos says:

Cody Thomas threw a int. He tried to hit Todd in the end zone but was intercepted by Sunderland. Was Todd’s fault though, he let the ball bounce off his hands

Super K – I look forward to your next notes. Playing OU vs OU in the practices and scrimmages, it is worrisome about just “how” good either side is. If you could try to comment vis-a-vis a group against a last year’s group (D-Line now vs then as an example) it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

Shweet! So if Que is super awesome, but is still behind Wade and Romar, does that mean Wade and Romar are super super awesome?

  • KJ1123 says:

The scrimmage itself may not have been as explosive offensively, but I think overall it was a good camp. I think they get this last practice over with tomorrow and then camp will be officially over. Guys are beat up tired from putting in alot of hours day in and day out. Now it’s time to heal up, polish up the assignments, let the excitement build and explode on Sept 5. It sets up nicely for the team in that they have 2 weeks before the first game and they’ve gotten alot accomplished in a short amount of time without and (knock on wood) major setbacks, virtually none.

  • Slim Sooner says:

Appreciate the practice notes, Super K, and good news about the rookies looking like contrbutors. I admit I’m thinking the future looks bright on both sides of the ball. So Ready To Get This Party Started! Can’t wait for Sept. 5.

  • Zack says:

Anyone else having trouble watching the soonersports video from today?

  • sooner8 says:

Just wanted to say that Super K & the Brainiacs complete me!! i don’t post much but read alot of great stuff on this site.Go Sooners!!!!!!!

  • EasTex says:

Watching the replay of last year’s Tulsa game. Keith Ford was having such a good start to the season last year, just a shame his career at OU ended on a sour note.

  • OUknowitscomin says:

Great stuff, thx K. Loved seeing yesterday that Quick has been coming on. Fun time of year.

  • Atkinson says:

All I have to say about the QB battle is this; remember two years ago when it was “Bell vs some guy named Knight?” We all know how that turned out so I wouldn’t be totally surprised if Thomas does get the nod with all the advantages he has physically against the other two. But what’s important to note is this. Doesn’t matter how much God-given talent you have if you’re a QB, but if your offense doesn’t look up to you as a LEADER, than you’re in trouble. Everyone grows into that role, I just hope whoever it is can lead. Btw, leaving Tuesday at 7:30 for Basic for the Army National Guard. So Super K, if you have it in you to send me an email of what you think will happen, let me know and I’ll give it to ya! So excited for this year and bummed out I won’t get to watch any games until the last weekend of October when I get a 36 hour pass to stay in a hotel with my girlfriend. Looking forward to alone time and Sooner football! So whoever is in charge of making the games available on YouTube, please do it lol

    • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

Baker has better dance moves, though.

      • Atkinson says:

No one can dance his dance moves, that’s a given. All three are intriguing. I’m just saying purely upside has to be Thomas.

      • Scott Moore says:

If it’s close at the wire, I say it’s Baker for his whip…We can call his throwing motion or completions the whip and his interceptions the nae nae…..I don’t want to watch him nae nae…

    • Clint Lenard says:

Some guy named Knight? Most people here knew a lot about Knight prior to him enrolling, much less being in the mix.

      • Atkinson says:

Most people know about every QB that comes to OU becaus they are usually 4 star prospects. I’m just saying that everyone assumed it would be Bell. The “Belldozer” package the year before, the fact he’d been in the system for longer than Knight had been, that’s all I’m saying. All I’m getting that is Bob isn’t scared to go with someone who has been the underdog this whole time like Thomas has. All of them bring something different to the table, I think we’d both agree with that. Knight is undoubtedly the leader. Mayfield is obviously the guy rallies around because he is almost the antithesis of what OU qb’s have been in the past for Stoops. I don’t recall any of them ever busting out dance moves and stuff with the team. Thomas is just the dark horse. That’s all I’m getting at. If only there was a way to have a QB who: 1) was a leader 2) had amazing dance moves & 3) had everyone beat out for the job and we knew who our QB would be for the next two years. But I digress

    • Sooner Ray says:

First off, best of luck with your Guard duty. Second, most games show up online afterwards for viewing. Most important, find the games…….then worry about the GF. 🙂

    • thebigdroot says:

You have a couple of weeks at reception before you go down range. Where is basic? Lenorwood, Sand hill?

    • Shelby is a Patriot says:

      Good luck at basic, man!

    • John Garner says:

“Defense recorded multiple interceptions on the morning:” is not a report I want to read. Good for the D for sure, but who, I wonder, threw the picks?

  • SamSooner says:

Mead seems like he’s a very smart football player. He’s going to be one of those crafty kind of receivers, which will make him doubly scary because he has talent to boot. I’m looking forward to seeing what this young man does on the field.

  • JB says:

What happened to Dede Westbrook? Why is he not with the team? Did he quit?

    • JrsySooner says:

Good Grief man are you insane, post like this will start a riot…
Can I tell you a secret, Dede is a Sheppard clone you wont see to much of him during two a days, you haven’t heard anything about shep have you, this is going to be the best OU team in years if we can find a capable QB….

      • Kelsta says:

Huh?!?! The report above says Dede “has still yet to rejoin the team”. JB, like myself, is wondering where he went. I’m not sure how your thoughts relate to his questions. And the link is great but again doesn’t have much to do with JB’s question.

On a positive note…I love the enthusiasm. I’m hopeful. We have some solid pieces for a great team but there are question marks other than QB that are still unanswered. Hopefully everything falls in to place and we make a great run.

      • JB says:

I was just curious because TFB’s notes said “hasn’t rejoined the team” with no explanation. I don’t read soonersports com because I want information. TFB us my only website for that!
