Open Post | Tuesday, Sept. 1st (UPDATE 2:45 pm)

Obi Eboh: Well, Obi Eboh tweeted out that he has received an offer from Texas. We’ve spoken to a couple sources around Obi and it seems the Texas offer could change things significantly. Eboh camped at Texas in June. Eboh is a very accomplished young man in the classroom (top 10%), and I’m told he and his mother really like the academics at Texas. Can’t say for certain which way this one will go but based on what I’m hearing from folks around Obi, this Texas offer is a game-changer. Fortunately for OU, coach Cooks has already put together a nice DB class and there are still a number of targets out there that are considering OU. So the Sooners are in good shape overall. – (Super K)

Brey Walker: Star 2018 OT Brey Walker (Moore, OK) tells us that he will be an attendance at this weekends season opener versus Akron.

The more Walker is on campus at OU, the better things are for Bedenbaugh and the Sooners. And Walker will end up being one of the most critical recruits in Oklahoma high school’s recent history. – (Brandon)

Byron Murphy: 2016 CB Byron Murphy (Scottsdale, AZ) released his Top 8 yesterday and the Sooners made the cut. We are checking in with Murphy to see if OU will receive an official visit from the highly sought after cornerback. Murphy’s top 8 included: Arizona, Arizona State, Ole Miss, Oklahoma, Texas, Texas A&M, USC and Washington. – (Super K)

UPDATE (2:30 pm): Levi Draper update…

UPDATE (2:45 pm): As Brandon noted a couple weeks back (here & here), 2016 WR Tyrie Cleveland and 2016 DT Ed Oliver out of Westfield HS, plan on taking an official visit to Oklahoma.  Cleveland just tweeted out the following:

First? Me? Why, I don’t know what to say. This is all so sudden. There’s just so many people to thank. I, uh. I…

  • Zack says:

Is walker the best okpreps prospect since McCoy? Or am I missing somebody?

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

Walker and Casey Thompson have to be 1A and 1B in recruiting for 2018. I know it’s far off but gotta get both of those guys

  • Jason Vos says:

Hey K where do we stand with Tramonda Moore? Would love to get him and Brey Walker

    • Super K says:

Tramonda is very high on FSU. If he stays in-state, OU is going to be in for a fight with OSU. His HC is Rashawn Woods and Tramonda admitted that Woods would like to see him at OSU. I think OU could get him, but at the moment I wouldn’t say OU is the favorite.

      • Steve says:

ive seen rumors that there is very little chance he will qualify academically. heard anything there?

      • Boom says:

BedenBOOM has his work cut out in order to get Tramonda. Bummer, I was hoping we could land him and The Big Little. Bring in Oliver, Tyrie Whaley along with Kelly and I’d say we are doin pretty good.

  • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

    Dear Levi,

I’m just a simple Sooner fan with more titles than talent. My identity is of no real consequence to you. But you, my dude, are an Okie and a balls awesome linebacker. You will be great wherever you go, but not wherever you go will be great. So, you can go and be part of the T. Boone experiment and accessorize your uniforms with all the other CowBarbies, or you can come to Norman and add your name to the football pantheon.

Go the way of the Boz, o’ slobber-knocker. And let the Gundies play dress-up.

    Sincerely,
    The TFB Community

      Stanford offered Levi tonight BTW

  • Walter Sobcek says:

FYI, re-air of the Marucs Dupree “30 for 30” on ESPN2 at 6 CST. Excellent documentary.

  • Jason Vos says:

I dont know why but im real excited to see Daniel Brooks run the ball in this offense. I think he might pose some Darren Sproles type problems.

Like a poor mans Darren Sproles

  • Boom says:

Good news on the Draper front. Hope all goes well and the communications continue to grow in a positive way for OU. I know somewhere in that young man, he likes OU or he wouldn’t have had the OU stuff on his walls. Maybe time will heal all wounds and he will be OU bound.

  • Daryl says:

Hey I understand being a fan of a school, but it is crazy to me that OU can put all this work in on a kid that was on the edge of committing and then another school offers and it all just goes away. Obviously this has happened in OU’s favor before and I loved it, but even then it just seems crazy to me.

  • BigJoeBrown says:

I admit, Josh Wariboko still makes me leery when comes to in-state recruiting. The guy seemed like he was on campus all the time and posted pro-OU stuff, only to committ to UCLA. So for me, my comfort level with Brey Walker or Levi Draper won’t be a given until thier LOI is in.

    • JR says:

It is all about the attitude. Josh wanted to leave the state and wanted to attend USC. If USC had offered, OU would not of had a chance. In the end, it would have taken OU to offer his brother and you cannot play that game with any recruit if you were not already going to offer their brother to begin with.

    • Daryl says:

I know Josh and he loves California and loved his visit UCLA. It was also an education decision for him. They have something’s they can offer in their business school that OU could not. He struggled to the end as to OU or UCLA but just liked them better. Nothing against OU just a matter of comfort

  • Malicong says:

Just read where Jalen Saunders is has been traded to New England. Hopefully he finds a home for while.

    • Shelby is a Patriot says:

It’ll be tough to stay on the roster so close to the final cut but hope he does it! Love seeing Sooners with the Pats.

      • Daddy R says:

Would be surprised NE would trade for him, if they didnt think he would make cut. But, ya never know..

        • Shelby is a Patriot says:

They likely traded for him to add to camp depth. They’ve got guys out with injuries at that position and other guys they want to keep out so they don’t get injured. It could be they traded for him because they really want him, and maybe they do even as just a camp guy, but if that were the case they probably would have made the trade a lot sooner. Regardless, I hope they like what they see enough to keep him.

    • CrimsonNative says:

The one thing I do like about the Pats is they will find a way to get the best out of every player. They can take a guy that might not be that great on another team and make him shine on theirs.

    • Sooner 4Ever says:

Since he is such a small guy, I’m assuming his hands are relatively small so he should benefit from playing for the Patriots where the ball is softer and not quite so big around. BWAHAHAHA.

    • Stephen Dale says:

with a good QB, Saunders may become Wes Welker-redux in NE’s offense….

    • Jason Vos says:

funny enough we recruited that guy hard

      • Zack says:

Luckily for us we did not land him. Although part of him leaving may have to do with the fact he was being recruited hard by power house schools and because of academics he ended up at sdsu.

        • KJ1123 says:

Kids forget sometimes the work you gotta put in after you’re done with HS football…it’s not easy, but it’s great once you are there and have your head on straight. Some kids just don’t love football as much as they love the attention from recruiting.

    • Exiled In Ohio says:

Man, that story is amazingly familiar.

  • CrimsonNative says:

Are we there yet…? This is taking F-O-R-E-V-E-R!

  • KJ1123 says:

Following recruiting is a headache sometimes. I wonder how much recruiting will change for the next 2 years if OU makes some noise. Obviously all starts with this year.

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

Playmakers on offense want to play in exciting systems. Riley will be responsible for that.

      • KJ1123 says:

I really hope the offense just explodes this year. Exciting offensive play attracts top defensive players as well.

        • Soonerfandave84 says:

Yep…If the offense can block and not turn it over this team is going to be just fine. I think the D is going to turn the corner this year, hopefully before a loss

    • DCinAZ says:

OU just needs a QB. Everything else will flow from there. Landry wasn’t a championship caliber QB and neither are any of these guys. I think that’s been our biggest problem.

      • Sooner 76 says:

Plus OL must gel and secondary must improve. Talent everywhere is high.

        • DCinAZ says:

Yep. Secondary was very young. Even with that being the case, if we had a championship caliber OU QB, they don’t look as bad as they did last year.

      • hOUligan says:

Agree QB is pivotal and can help cover other areas. “Biggest problems ” for OU the last few years might have been on the sidelines. One has moved on and the other has moved ‘up’.

      • RBear says:

Landry excelled and wasn’t even in the right system.

    • CS says:

No wonder they are favored in the SEC!! But, I think W/O a QB, it will be still hard to win the big ones.

      • KJ1123 says:

SEC fans get so mad when they think other conferences are getting more love than them, its comical.

        • CS says:

They are stupid that way. But, to be honest, I like watching the SEC play compared to Big10 or Pac12 (ofcourse not Big12 considering my bias). The rough run heavy offenses and the mediocrity of QB play always makes the game even and fun to watch (though SEC fans will argue that as good defense).

          • Walter Sobcek says:

I agree. SEC is always overrated, but the intensity of the rivalries and the syle of play does make for some very exciting football. The fans are mentally unbalanced, and that’s fun, too.

          • CS says:

Never miss the CBS afternoon game and it never fails to surprise.

    • Dustin says:

  • Anne T. Social says:

    Obligatory Tyrie Cleveland hype comment.

  • Anne T. Social says:

  • Mustvid says:

This seems a little dramatic “And Walker will end up being one of the most critical recruits in Oklahoma high school’s recent history.” Care to elaborate Brandon?

  • BoomerDave says:

Just as I predicted months ago, Draper will not stay committed to O-State. In fact, he’s not really committed now, if he’s still entertaining and publicizing recruiting calls from other schools.

  • Anne T. Social says:

Just like Traber, I think next year is our year…………………….

Hello, MY real name is Slick Rick. Sorry if my monicker “anne t social” offends you, but I’m really just here to pass my thoughts and opinions on my beloved Sooners. That’s all, Im new… I’m out there, I am different. Glad to meet y’all!

  • Kuzi says:

    Let’s talk a little football.

I keep hearing how this offense is simple to learn but looks complex from the standpoint of the defense. Exactly how does Riley do this? Is it that he has basic concepts (high-low, flood, 4 verticals, slant-flat, curl-flat) with slight modifications (adding a route here and there) and running those concepts out of multiple formations? I know Leach used to use a lot of simple option routes (sit against zone, run out versus man) so I would imaging he does that as well to add a little more flexibility to the offense. Anyone have any thoughts?

  • soonerthunder says:

Okay here is my predicted finish for the B12:
    1. OU—much better D and O and kicking game this
year. Think OU finishes anywhere from 10-2 to 12-0, 11-1 probably.
    2. BU—reason I think OU takes them this year. Only
B12 team to 3-peat is OU and it will be difficult for BU to copy that. The reason
I think OU takes them this year is b/c they killed OU the last 2 yrs and it’s
hard to get mentally up for a team you’ve creamed the last 2 yrs. OU will not
have problems getting the players attention and OU is a LOT better team than
they were the last 2 yrs.
    3. UT—I think they will be better this year and
will surprise. They have great athletes. I could see UT finishing anywhere from
    3rd to 5th this year.
    4. WV—probably anywhere from 3rd to 5th also.
    5. TCU—yes, I think they fall this year back down
to where they came from. Everything went dreamily perfect for them last year. Don’t
think that happens this year. Probably 4th to 6th place finish for TCU.
    6. KSU—probably anywhere from 4th to 6th finish.
    7. OSU—I don’t get people’s excitement about OSU. If
not for Hill they lose to KU! (and OU). That’s 2 games and a losing season and
not beating a single good team. They don’t have Hill and I don’t see them
getting THAT much better. Maybe up to 5th, but I don’t see them higher than 5th.
    8. TT—I think they have a fairly solid hold on 8th place.
    9. ISU—I think they have a fairly solid hold on 9th place.
    10. KU—no one will beat them out for 10th place.

Most difficult games in order (IMO):
    1. UT—I know people inside the football program and
the pressure on UT to beat OU over every other team is incredible they tell me.
It’s their ONE greatest desire of the entire season. They can take getting beat
by BU or ND or anyone, but they cannot stomach getting beat by OU AGAIN! I
think UT has planned/schemed/drilled/everything on OU far more than any other
team and maybe all the other teams on their schedule put together (just
kidding, but not much). They have great athletes. They have great coaches. They
don’t have a great QB, but they want OU like no other team and I believe it
will be the team we are most likely to lose to if we lose. And, btw, I feel
about them like they feel about us. I’d rather lose to any other team on our
schedule, including BU again or OSU, than UT.
    2. BU—usually I’d pick BU to beat OU this year, but
I think BS is one of the winningest coaches of all time for a reason. I think
OU takes BU this year, but if we lose, BU would be the team I’d pick 2nd
on our schedule to beat us.
    3. UT—think we beat them, but they’d be my 3rd choice of teams to beat us.
    4. Anybody between KSU, OSU, TCU, WV—all about
equal opportunities to beat us, IMO. I think we beat them all, personally.

Before Herbstreet picked OU, I also thought we’d be very good and can beat anyone on the schedule.

    Defense:
D-backs: MUCH improved. I think we have 3 studs:
Parker, JThomas and Sanchez—can play with anyone. AThomas and Byrd will be
better in 2nd yr to see B12 Os, and I am guessing the B12 refs will
help them out by throwing more flags when teams cheat and send OL downfield and
then pull up and throw making them look stupid for giving up the pass—like they
should! Backups much better than we had last year, some Parker-like athletes
themselves having a year probably about like Parker had last year (which was
pretty good). Plus, better communication and more pressure this year on QBs and
I expect to see a jump from 117th to top 50 or better which is a
HUGE jump in overall improvement in our D.

LBs: much improved and much better depth.

DL: Tapper wasn’t healthy last year; he’s better
than he was 2 yrs ago when he was B12. IF, we are not as good in our replacement
of Phillips, we are making up for that in our improvement of Tapper ’15 over
Tapper ’14. He wasn’t well last year. Not real sure we lose any overall play by
losing Phillips for 2 reasons: one, it wasn’t a D that took advantage of his
pressure anyway, and two, he took too many plays off. This will be an attack D
and as a result Romar/Wade/Overton and Walker/Dimon should be better if for no
other reason than that. Much better depth than last year.

Striker will be used to do what he does. He’s as
good a pass rusher as anyone anywhere, but he only attacked the QB about 25% of
the plays if I recall last year. This year look for it to be about 75%. We are
MUCH better all around him and depth: Bond is a stud, plus DeBerry, Obo=very good.

Yes, I think there will be a huge jump in the D performance this year. There should
be a noticeable difference. I’d like to see us average holding teams to about 3
less pts or more than last year. Let me explain. I don’t care about the scores
other teams made last year against special teams or pick 6s. I’m talking about
what teams actually scored against our D. With our O running many more plays
and probably series and as a result, scoring more themselves, a 3 pt less or
more on D would be a big improvement, IMO. It sounds like the D has been making
more TOs in practices which is a mindset; hopefully, that carries over into the season.

    Offense:
QBs: This will be the biggest difference in this
team this year. I think either TK or Mayfield can lead this team to beat anyone
in the country, esp. in this O. And, there is a chance we end the season with
TK b/c we have had a history of QB injuries. I don’t think there is much
difference between the two and we will be already with either one, but as you
know, I’ve always thought I saw that Mayfield was clearly the best QB. Better QB=much
    better team this year.

RBs: Wow. I think people are crazy to forget
Ross, too. Remember: The recently released depth chart is a fluid thing in a
position like RB or WR, but regardless, we are pretty good at RB. I do not
believe that there is a team in the U.S., maybe including some NFL teams, I’d
    trade our RBs for theirs.

WRs: I think Shep is as good as any WR in the
U.S. He’s incredible. He was averaging about 140 yds a game when he went down.
If Dede is anywhere close to him, I don’t have words. Neal will be much better
in this system and will surprise, but 3 starters from last year (Young, Quick,
Neal) have been passed by Dede, Andrews and perhaps others, and they are better
themselves than last year (older). Yeah, we have the system, QB, RBs, to have a
great passing game. I am wanting 2 out of every 3 passes to be completed this
    year (66%). That’s my goal. That’s helps Perine/Mixon/etc. I think if we don’t
go too many times 3 incomplete passes in a row, we should do pretty well on O
    against anyone.

OL: Darlington told me that St. John was
incredibly gifted lineman. He got beat out by Brown—that’s why St. John was
moved to RT, not b/c he was good! Yep, I think, b/c of that, we are pretty good
at OT if those two don’t get hurt. I think Bedenbaugh is basically filling in
one more position, LG, and Alverez was good enough to play some with tons of
experienced guards last year as a FR. I think the OL will be fine.

I am hoping our O scores at least 7 pts more a game than
last year with not more than one TO in the biggest games: UT, UT, BU, OSU, KSU,
WV, TCU. If we only have one TO in those games, I think we win all of them. We
might can win them anyway, but one or less I think we can beat anyone. But, don’t
forget, when you play great teams, they are great b/c they get TOs sometimes,
and hopefully OU can get some themselves and win anyway.

    Coaches:
I don’t think anyone is better than BS. No one. He will go down in history as one of
the very best ever. He ranks last in the B12 of losing games by 3 or 4 pts or
less. Think about it. He’s one of the winningest coaches of all time, and IF
you do beat him, you know that you’ve done something b/c usually you get out
with a win by the skin of your teeth. I think only 2 times has he had this many
returning starters and we were VERY good that next year, and there are too many
areas on this team that we should be MUCH better in this year. We have depth to
absorb injuries in almost every position this year, including QB IMO, except,
IMO, OL and probably D-backs, esp at safety until the talented backups caught
    up with the B12.

Alright, you can’t write that much and not have MANY OU fans
disagree with quite a few points. Let me have it!

    • Kuzi says:

      Scrap it all… start over.

      I kid, I kid.

    • Zack says:

That is a lot to digest and right now I’m just going to comment on your first section and the big 12 order. I don’t disagree much with your opinions there. I think tcu falls back to earth a bit 2-3 losses in conference. I’m not high on osu either but I think they’re better than ksu and might find themselves in a 3 way race for 3rd with tcu and Texas who I agree will be a better team just not quite sure if they will win the close games. I would predict tcu, osu, texas as 3-5.
I do however think Baylor is still better than ou until I see otherwise. I do agree we can win but I don’t think Baylor will sleep on us at all.

      • Zack says:

Also I want to add that I don’t think there’s a team more talented than ou in the league. Our top 22 vs any other top 22 in the big 12 and I take ours every time. I mean is there a better running back in the league than Perine? Maybe mixon is better we will have to see, but he’s on our team too. Then you add in striker, tapper, Sanchez, shep, Westbrook. And baker is probably a top 3 qb in this conference. I think fans should be more excited. I hear a lot of fans say 9-4 would be the ceiling.

      • I think OU wins big12. TCU second with two losses. Baylor crumbles under ego and fallout from rape cases. Many, many in press in Texas calling for Briles to be fired. Not sure about other finishes except Texas goes no better than 7-5 and coach is fired. Baka goes 8-4 or 9-3 and Saban is hired by Texas for 10 million a year. Remember you heard it here first. Rumor is that Saban is getting happy feet again and a sub-par season might be just enough to send him on his way.

    • EasTex says:

You put a lot of effort and time into this.
I have no major quibbles with any of it, but I would like to point out Young is no longer on the team.

    • SamSooner says:

That’s a lot. This deserves a response. It’s clear you put some thought into this. I believe this will be the year. I don’t know if it will be pretty every week but it might.

      Two reasons:
      1. Offense. I won’t go into anymore than saying that Riley will be a mad scientist and he will dream up some sick s**t for defenses to worry about.
      2. Stoops has been stock piling on the defensive line for three classes. It didn’t take long as he’s been working overtime to get DL help. I think this unit will lead the nation in sacks. DBs will be better. They’re young but they have the confidence and short memory you need to be great.

    • eastoksooner says:

Up vote if for nothing but the work alone to think that much. I think you made some great points, could see a lot of that happening.

    • Dustin says:

      14-0. National Champs.

    • kt-raida says:

great thoughts. i want to add i think the Sugar bowl victory was an indication more for this year than last.

    • Kelsta says:

For the record, I hope you are correct. But that’s a lot or writing without much analysis. It reminds me of someone at the roulette table saying “it’s been black the last 5 times…it’s gotta be black again”. Which makes about as much sense as “it’s been black the last 5 times…no way will it be black again”.

I’m not going to address every line so I’ll just jump on the TCU prediction. You said “everything went dreamily perfect” for TCU last year. I watched all of their games and they appeared to be the most talented team on the field in every single game they played. It wasn’t a matter of ‘the ball bouncing right’… they were a great team. I think they would have beat BU 8 out of 10 times. Then, they were unfortunate to not be included in the playoff. It was quiet opposite of dreamily perfect. Every year there are teams that disappoint despite having every reasonable reason to be great. We see it on all levels in all sports. It’s possible TCU falls off this year. I don’t think you could have predicted their rise last year. I don’t think you can analytically predict a fall this year.

To anyone. Did anyone watch the Euless Trinity-De La Salle game Saturday night? If so isn’t it a NCAA violation for a University to host a practice at a prospects high school? Reason I ask is during the broadcast they said Cal held a practice at De La Salle to impress a lineman!
