Open Post | Weekend, Mar. 25th – 27th (UPDATE Sun., 2:24 pm)

Kary Vincent & Marvin Wilson: Earlier in the week, TFB’s own Andrew started a bit of a stir when he tweeted out that both Kary Vincent and Marvin Wilson would be visiting Oklahoma for the spring game. To clarify, there had been some talk that the two were planning to ride together on that trip, so Vincent was under the impression a ride was secured. However, there was a change of plans and Wilson, along with his teammate Walker Little, will instead be heading to Ole Miss that same weekend.

Wilson has since told TFB he plans on getting to Oklahoma at some point, but a date has still not been set. It’s a similar situation with Vincent as well, who says he would also like to make it up to Norman at some point but unsure at the moment as to when that will be. If the timing and transportation work out, it could be soon. But as many of you know, Vincent is a star track athlete as well so I suspect the scheduling this time of year can be tough.

Bottom line is while neither Vincent nor Wilson have scheduled their visits, both have expressed their strong interest in making it up to Norman at some point. – (Super K)

Isaiah Thomas: A player who did recently visit Oklahoma, however, is 2017 OLB/DE Isaiah Thomas (Tulsa, OK). This week was Thomas’ second visit to OU, and on this most recent trip he spent most of his time with both Mike Stoops and Calvin Thibodeaux. In talking about the latter Thomas said, “he keeps it one hundred, I like him. We talked about where I fit, and he said they’d start me at Jack (linebacker). But if I pick up weight, they’d move me to (defensive) end. He also was saying how the defense they run fits me because they want to be multiple, and I’m a versatile player.”

Thomas played the early part of this past season with his hand in the dirt, but as the season progressed the Memorial coaches stood him up and Thomas made that transition extremely well. The Tulsa product said he feels more comfortable with his hand in the dirt but, as he demonstrated throughout the season, can do both well.

Charles Tapper and Sam Bradford were also at practice the same day Thomas attended, and he wound up spending a good amount of time speaking with the soon-to-be NFL’er Tapper. “He (Tapper) is very nice. I talked to him for a while.” As to the topic of conversation, “some of everything. He was talking about how he started out as a basketball player and didn’t play much football at all. He talked about blocking out distractions while you’re in school, about OU and his time there, and how it ended up being a great place for him. But he told me to make the best decision for me.”

In terms of other trips, Thomas has a visit to Oklahoma State scheduled for early April. As for a decision timeline Thomas said, “I want to wait and see some other places, but I’m definitely feeling OU.” – (Super K)

Chuck Filiaga: 2017 offensive tackle Chuck Filiaga (Murrieta, CA) visited Oklahoma yesterday and afterwards described the trip to TFB as “great.” Filiaga added that he and Bill Bedenbaugh have built a strong relationship, but one of the more interesting parts of the conversation was what Filiaga said partly prompted his interest in OU and this recent visit.

“I’ll be moving to Texas, and Oklahoma is right there next to us. It was a great choice to visit OU.”

Filiaga doesn’t seem to be nearing a decision saying, “I’ll be exploring all my options, and I’ll be visiting Texas, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Alabama, Auburn, Baylor & TCU.” Filiaga added that he plans on transferring to Aledo High School in Texas, which will obviously give OU a proximity advantage they didn’t have when Filiaga was still in California. – (Brandon & Super K)

Jacob Phillips: 2017 LB Jacob Phillips (Nashville, TN) also visited the Sooners this past week. Phillips holds offers from all over the country, so getting a high profile player from SEC territory on campus already is no small thing. And it sounds like the Sooners made as good of an impression one could expect or hope for. “OU made a big jump. They’re very high on my list now,” Phillips said when I caught up with him Thursday night.

Earlier this week 2017 OT Joel Honigford was in Norman and had great things to say about the OU staff, but specifically highlighted the their sincerity and authenticity. Interestingly, Phillips described the OU staff in much the same way. “I liked how genuine and pure the people were. I feel like they can mold me into a better man. They have nice facilities, but those don’t matter much to me. Everyone is competing to have the best facilities, so you’re going to get that everywhere. The number one thing to me is the environment. A place where I feel like I’m being developed, raised up and can be successful.”

Phillips is an exceedingly thoughtful young man and in a time when kids are so enamored with the glitz and the glamour, I really appreciated the fact that he values the important things. Phillips and I also talked about a commitment timeline, to which he said that ideally he’d like to take some official visits early in the season. He added, “I’m trying to make a decision in the first five weeks of my senior season.”

Phillips said he will likely cut down his list soon and Oklahoma is a school he expects to make a cut and be in it throughout his recruiting process. – (Super K)

Kobe Boyce: 2017 CB Kobe Boyce (Lake Dallas, TX) has seen his recruitment pick up lately, receiving offers from Arkansas, Houston and Mississippi State. Boyce has been communicating regularly with Oklahoma, and he shared with TFB the OU coaches are telling him an offer could be coming very soon. Boyce said he will “most likely” be at the Sooners spring game, where he hopes to receive said impending offer. – (Super K)

Grant Delpit: A player who had hoped to make it up to OU this weekend is 2017 safety Grant Delpit (Houston, TX). However, he let TFB know that something came up and he will no longer be able to make that trip. All is not lost though as Delpit maintained he and his father definitely still plan on getting up to Norman for a visit at some point.

Delpit and his family are originally from Louisiana and based on my conversations with him, it would seem LSU will be the team to beat right now. – (Super K)

Greg Rogers: Star 2017 DT Greg Rogers (Las Vegas, NV) is one of the most sought after defensive linemen in the country, and TFB recently had a chance to catch up with him shortly after he took a trip to Notre Dame this past week. The conversation was somewhat brief, but among the highlights was Rogers’ intention to visit Norman. “Yeah it’s coming. Oklahoma is one of my top schools. Definitely got to see Norman, man.” – (Super K)

Trey Sermon: Just a quick note on 2017 running back Trey Sermon (Marietta, GA), who is expected to visit Oklahoma next week. In talking with his coach, Sermon is apparently a huge fan of Adrian Peterson. The degree of fandom for Peterson, as his coach described it, actually reminded me of how big a fan Joe Mixon also was of the former Sooner great. Which, as many of you will recall, played at least somewhat of a role in Oklahoma eventually landing the five-star RB.

Along with the fact that Sermon and his coach are very high on Jay Boulware, the Sooners appear to be real contenders here. – (Super K)

– Team Notes | Offensive Line: Wanted to pass along some of what we’ve heard from a few sources regarding the progress of Oklahoma’s offensive line through the first couple weeks of spring practices.

* The starting five continues to be: Orlando Brown (LT), Cody Ford (LG), Jon Alvarez (C), Jamal Danley (RG) & Dru Samia (RT). However, they are also rotating Christian Daimler in quite a bit at RT. At which point Samia then slides inside to RG.

* Behind Brown at LT is Bobby Evans, who we’re told has looked good so far. One source seemed to think that by the time the season rolls around, odds are Evans will provide some quality depth at tackle.

* Samia and Daimler would be considered your top two at RT, with Quinn Mittermeier the most likely candidate to be 3rd. Have heard some good things regarding Mittermeier, but also been told he’s just ‘a bit light right now’ as was evidenced when TFB detailed those spring roster updates.

* Checking with one source as to how the interior guys are looking given all the replacements, was again told the expectations remain they should be better this year compared to last. “Cody (Ford) moves really well” and Alvarez is “stronger” and has a “more solid base” compared to OU centers past, according to one source. The line is getting used to Alvarez’s timing on things, but that will certainly come with time. Also walk-on center Erick Wren, “looks pretty decent at center.”

* Was also told that early enrollee and former JUCO OL Ben Powers may be the best interior lineman among the group of guys running second team right now. Expect him to provide the Sooners with quality depth as well.

* In general, the impression I get is that the Sooners should have a better starting group on the offensive line this year and more depth overall. – (Super K)
