Open Post | Tuesday, Feb. 2nd (UPDATE 7:00 pm)

Alright, the plan on this NSD eve, is to try and address the remaining realistic targets on OU’s board. So if you don’t see someone below, just hit us up in the comments and we’ll do our best to answer any questions you might have.

Riley Cole, Something Changed?: Two days ago, the father of 2016 LB Riley Cole (Oneonta, AL) let me know that Oklahoma had extended his son a scholarship offer. It came shortly after Cole’s decommittment from Alabama, which resulted in the Tide asking him to take a grayshirt. However with regards to Cole & OU, last night I received a text his father that read, “I don’t think the offer (from OU) is still good.”

Whatever changed with respect to the offer at this point probably isn’t relevant, and it’s our understanding Cole is likely to stay somewhere down south regardless. However, this development did make me wonder if something changed between Sunday and Monday night in terms of how OU feels about LB targets that prompted such a sudden move.

Although we aren’t really sure what exact LB position Cole would’ve played for the Sooners, this is probably coming down to a simple numbers issue. Obviously, the Sooners picked up Mark Jackson yesterday but he had made that decision on Sunday. And if we (and others, I’m sure) got wind of the decision then, I have to assume the staff knew as well.

Which leads me to Caleb Kelly….

Caleb Kelly: I go back and forth on this one. I’ve talked to numerous people about Kelly and even having done so, I still can’t settle on a decision. The Sooners have long been the favorite, and for a while Michigan loomed as the primary threat. However the Wolverines would eventually go another direction for whatever reason, at which point Notre Dame then stepped in.

I look at that two ways. The Sooners have been near the top for so long, there’s no way a late comer like Notre Dame could win. Or maybe Kelly is looking for a reason not to go to OU so as soon as Michigan was out of the picture, the Irish came into the picture.

Kelly has close ties to both members of the Oklahoma staff and several players, and he has visited Norman on numerous occasions. But I’ve been told he also has a close family member who accompanied him on a visit to Notre Dame and said family member may be pushing him towards South Bend.

These things usually play out with the most familiar school winning out and that would clearly be Oklahoma. But right now, I still think there is a chance it could go either way. – (Super K)

Marcel Southall: Not much to say here, we’ve talked to a few sources on both the OU and Texas side of this and from what we can gather, the Sooners figure to be a very, very unlikely pick for Southall. Frankly, we aren’t really sure how heavily the Sooners even really pursued Southall over the past few weeks. – (Brandon & Super K)

Parrish Cobb: Yesterday, K mentioned there was a lot of confusion inside the Cobb household with regards to where the 2016 CB may eventually land. I was told that Cobb and his father sat down with the rest of the family to hash the whole thing out.

I’m told the family is still giving the OU staff assurances that Cobb will sign with the Sooners and that certainly jives with what K has said time and time again; the father wants Cobb at Oklahoma. – (Brandon)

Jared Mayden: Earlier this morning, I was talking to a friend of mine who is a recruiting expert and I asked where he felt Mayden would end up. “I’d bet Oklahoma…he won’t disappoint his family twice,” he said.

Mayden’s family has made it clear to us, and others, that they would prefer their son end up at Oklahoma. But that’s been true for a while now and yet early in his recruitment, OU didn’t even make his Top 7.

Yesterday, 2016 five-star CB Nigel Knott (Madison, MS) committed to Alabama, so we reached out to a couple sources in the Alabama area to see if that would impact whether or not the Tide still had a spot open for Mayden. And according to what we were told, even after Knott’s commitment Mayden is still a definite take for Bama.

It would appear there is a part of Mayden that wants to blaze his own path, but the family pull is undeniably strong and his recent visit to Oklahoma also went well. Again, a tough one to call here but the Sooners do have Mom in their corner, and in a lot of cases that can be enough. – (Super K)

Chris Daniels: Simply put, barring a fairly significant change in the next 24 hours we don’t see this one happening for Oklahoma.

Mykel Jones: We are still waiting to hear if Alabama will have a spot for Jones. If they do, we’ve been told that will be the pick. Of course if they do not, then we expect Jones to end up a Sooner.

– PJ Blue: The Louisville commit recently visited Norman and we believe, assuming OU could make the numbers work, he’d still be a take for the Sooners. However we’ll be 100% up front with you on this one in saying we really don’t have much info otherwise.

– Maxs Tupai: We had an updated on Tupai in Monday’s Open Post and there has been no change since then with respect to where we believe things stand.

– UPDATE (11:03 am): 2016 CB Parrish Cobb has decommitted from Oklahoma.

– UPDATE (3:33 pm): Not sure how much, if anything, there is to this, but for the sake of full disclosure.

– UPDATE (3:42 pm): Evidently 2016 LB & OU offer, Maxs Tupai, isn’t expected to announce his college decision tomorrow as was previously expected.

UPDATE (4:16 pm): Just got a little information from the Notre Dame side of this Caleb Kelly recruitment. I was told that last week ND was feeling pretty confident. Was told that they feel much less confident this week. Oklahoma side of things has been pretty quiet. It’s my belief that Kelly really hasn’t let either staff know and may in fact be still deciding himself. But the decline in confidence on the ND side makes me think that the Sooners in-home visit late last week went well. – (Super K)

– UPDATE (6:05 pm): Best of luck to the young man.

Screw it, I’ll claim second since nobody else has.

    • Framoka says:

nice technical move :). I like the way we are finishing. Kelly, Mayden, a “Jones” and Cobb. Agree, that’s pretty fine. Then BS pulls another Orlando out of the ashes of some SEC school over-recruiting.

    • David Morris says:

      I like it.

  • Lincoln Hawk says:

Interesting that we won’t be taking a DT this cycle, good thing we got some studs last year.

    • Super K says:

I think Bledsoe is a b gap player

      • Lincoln Hawk says:

Haha you lost me in the technical jargon…I played a different sport growing up but I take that as he is indeed a DT. Thanks.

        • Exiled In Ohio says:

I think in simple language he could play DT, but wouldn’t be the Jordan Phillips-type monster in the middle. We didn’t get one of those.

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

I was hoping we could land one after seeing what Clemson did to us, although I know we stocked up last year on the big boys. They will probably make it a priority next year I would assume.

        • JD says:

Between the guard and tackle is the B gap

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

JY, what are your thoughts on the OL class Coach B is bringing in? They seem to be big and nasty!

      • JY says:

Think Kevin Dodd from Clemson that gave the Sooners so many issues up front.

      • OUhomer4life says:

I watched film on mykel. He has good hands, good speed, and good separation. My question is do we really have a chance at this kid?

      • SamSooner says:

        Super K, good morning.

You wrote a post, sometime last year, why it’s important to get in early with a kid. OU has been doing that. Look at all of the 2017 commits and 2017 offers, mix in the 2018 already going out.

I’d like your take on the Daniels’ situation: how is it that Charlie Strong can offer a kid four weeks before NSD and get a kid to de-commit from a school that has been locked since day one?

How can Charlie Strong spend two years at texsa and pull this off? I have some ideas, more like conspiracy theories.

        • Stephen Dale says:

Charlie played ball with Daniels dad years ago and Charlie played the ‘race card’ in luring Daniels to Austin….

        • SoonerfanTU says:

The kid knows Strong well, and grew up liking Texas. That is why they could wait so long. Just like OU has done with some Oklahoma recruits over the years.

      • Jim Casy says:

        Fantastic frame on that kid.

    • Exiled In Ohio says:

I think the coaches definitely wanted a big DT, but the need wasn’t great enough to go out after a 2nd tier candidate. I’m sure it will be a major priority in 2017.

    • Mr. Jones says:

I agree. Would definitely prefer to bring in at least 1 true DT but bringing in the 3 we brought in last year makes it less of a blow, imo.

  • Malicong says:

Getting Kelly, Mayden, and Jones and keeping Cobb would be great. I thought Southall was an OU lean but if the coaches stopped pursuing him maybe they decided the scholly could be used better elsewhere.

  • Jeff says:

If OU loses Kelly someone needs to be fired!

  • Sooner Ray says:

Hoping we get a surprise tomorrow that no one saw coming, those are always nice.

  • Ryan says:

So if we do not take a DT this class, I assume we will make it the top priority for 2017 correct?

    • Malicong says:

I was wondering that myself but as of right now, the DT position is rather thin next year, especially in the south. Kids can still develop of course so time will tell, but the more I look into it, the less I like not have a DT in this class.

      • Ryan says:

The most important position on a defense IMO. Lots of quality depth there eases any loss caused by injury, draft, etc. I don’t want it to come back and bite us in the butt in the future.

      • Stephen Dale says:

The Wilson kid in Houston will be a major OU target as will the kid in Las vegas……for 2017.

  • SoonerMagic76 says:

Thanks for the updates K! I know you all work hard year round, but I’m sure these weeks before NSD have got to be even crazier than normal. Thanks for keeping us informed!

  • jonnyBgood says:

11th?! Hahaha. It’s nail biting time folks. I have a good feeling about this class and believe we are going to have a few guys end up signing that were thought to be gonzo. It’s just a gut feeling but I think the momentum of this past week combined with parental influence leads me to have a positive outlook on where this class finishes up. I can’t say enough about both the quality and quantity of information this site has dropped on us the last week or so. I’m so grateful as a lifelong Sooner fan to have such a wonderful outlet keeping me updated on the team I love. Thanks for your hard work and know it is very much appreciated! #BOOM

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

just have to say, OU is blessed to have someone as good as Buddy Hield both on and off the court. Much respect for the young man.

How many open spots do the Sooners have left, K? Im hopeful Kelly and Mayden take 2 of them

  • John Garner says:

Hoping for an Orlando Brown-like surprise tomorrow. (Kelly too.)

  • Mizuno44 says:

Good class in 2016 with interesting pieces and gappers, most likely a Phenomenal class setting up for 2017

  • Brian says:

    Anything on Velus Jones?

  • Johnny Greenlantern Otis says:

    just gotta stay positive

  • Exiled In Ohio says:

On the subject of 2017 DTs: I see we have offered Haskell Garrett out of Vegas. Do we still have an “in” with Bishop Gorman or has that relationship cooled off in recent years?

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

Was looking at 247 composite rankings, and if OU gets both Kelly and Mayden(I think there is a good chance they do) 5 of the top 6 players in this class will be on D the other, is the QB.

    I like it a lot!

  • Fear The Magic says:

Two things. First of all the news on retaining Cobb to me would be as big as it gets. I really want this kid to be a Sooner so at least now there’s some hope.
Secondly, I think it would be kind of ironic that if Bama ends up taking Joshua Jacobs that possibly might close off a spot there for Jones thus OU being the beneficiary. Something to think about anyway.
Again K, Thanks so much for hard work and amazing information you supply us with. That goes for all of you at TFB.

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

Cobbs athleticism reminds me of Reggie Smith. I think he’s going to be a starter, probably in 2017(JT will declare for the draft)

      • Fear The Magic says:

I noticed in the All star game that he had hella closing speed as well. Thats what got me hooked on this kid.

        • Soonerfandave84 says:

Yeah, I think OU is really improving on D the past couple classes, now to just get them some experience and on the field.

        • Ryan says:

Lots of talent in the secondary if we get Cobbs, Mayden, and Parker. Along with last year’s class of safeties. Just what the doctor ordered for playing in the Big 12.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

Isn’t Mayden rated much higher than Cobb? Pretty sure he is by ESPN. If it’s one or the other, I’ll take Mayden. Be great to get both though.

      • Fear The Magic says:

I believe on Rivals Mayden is the #11 CB Cobb is #12 and Parker is #13

        • soonerthunder says:

and they have no idea for sure. it’s when they get on campus we find out for sure

        • SoonerSpock says:

The 247Sports Composite which is the average of Rivals, ESPN, Scout and 247Sports list Jared Mayden as the #13 CB, Jordan Parker @ #16 and Parrish Cobb @ #30.

  • Sooner Scoop says:

Who will be the breakout star of this 2016 class? One of the recruits will be a first rounder.

  • SoonerBredCD says:

It sounds like TFB has a really good feel for those who won’t end up Sooners, but not much of a feeling one way or the other for those that are left. Its going to be a long 36 hours.

  • Corey says:

Bama is not taking Mayden, Jones and Jacobs. Whoever is left out of the loop will be heading to Norman.

    • MoJoOkie says:

Thought Jacobs choices were bama and misery. Wouldn’t he flip to the tigers if bama sent him packing?

    • Kelly Gurbcock says:

it just sucks that we have to get left overs, we are these kids second choice. my how things have changed. need to win big again and flip the momentum. or be like UTerus and go 5-7, that seems to be working for them.

      • Exiled In Ohio says:

I don’t feel at all like we are getting leftovers. Another way of looking at it is that the kind of players we want are going to be in high demand, and we’ve got to expect to have heavy competition in landing them. OU is competitive with other big schools, but not in a position to just pick who we want and expect to get them automatically.

        • SoonerSpock says:

OU may be competitive with other big schools but we have not been succeeding on par with those top schools for the last 5 years. Progress has been made over the last two years. And I fully expect that 2017 will be the turn around year when we get the full impact of our CFP appearance. This will especially be true if we can follow 2016 with another playoff experience.

The biggest burden we bear is playing the the B12 which is attracting far fewer top talented players than the other Power 5 conferences. This impact is especially felt in Texas where the B12 is getting only about 2/3 of the top Texas kids the conference previously signed prior to aTm’s move to the SEC.

At best this year OU will sign 4 Texas kids (Farrar, Daniels, Mayden and Jackson) assuming Ryan Parker is not going to make it academically. It could be only Farrar and Jackson. For certain OU needs to get

      • Jim Casy says:

Mayden is a get no matter how you slice it.

      • cush creekmont says:

Got a pretty darn good “leftover” from Tennessee – I would take those kind ALL DAY!

      • soonerthunder says:

bama wanted them. they are just as good maybe better than who bama takes. gary gibbs: “recruiting is not an exact science.”

      • Bob Edwards says:

People complain when we aren’t in the mix for the same players Bama is and then when we get some of them they are leftovers. Doesn’t seem like there is any way to win that one.

        • Kelly Gurbcock says:

not complaining about the leftovers, more so stating that we used to have the problem bama has now which is being everyone’s number one choice.

    • PlayLikeaChampion says:

      Mayden and Jones to OU.

  • SoonerfanTU says:

Any chances of a last minute flip from Cleveland? I know TFB’s had said his recruitment was over a few weeks back. I’m doubting a flip, I think he and Oliver have bought into the “stay in Houston” stuff they are selling down there.

    • Malicong says:

I have read that he is possibly flipping to Florida.

      • SoonerfanTU says:

That would be even more dumb than just going to Houston.

      • Ryan says:

Hahaha they do have an amazing passing attack down there. He’s also considering Arkansas (a rushing attack). I really wonder what goes on in these kids’ heads.

        • Clint Lenard says:

Florida literally has the WORST offense I’ve ever seen in my life. Not even being sarcastic. I couldn’t imagine why any WR would want to end up there.

          • Ryan says:

EXACTLY. Yet OU struggles mightily to get these 5 star WR’s coming off an incredible offensive season. The world makes no sense.

          • Malicong says:

The weird thing is the SEC seems to put great WR’s in the league. OU has had some really good college WR’s in the last 15 years but not a single one has panned out in the NFL. 3 of the 4 starting WR’s in the pro bowl this year were SEC guys and 5 of the 8 overall.

          • Soonerfandave84 says:

Which is weird because they are a running league, but to counter that the B12 has 3 of the 4 best RBs in the NFL, AD, Murray, and Jamaal Charles and it’s a passing league.

    • Jordan Esco says:

      very unlikely

    • PlayLikeaChampion says:

Cleveland isn’t as fluid of a running like some want to believe. Oliver is a hoss.

  • soonerborn says:

Here is what 24/7 sports has for predictions on the DT’s OU were courting. sOUthall 75% OU, Taylor 63% that team in Austin, Daniels 43% That team in Austin, and that team in Austin has the lead for Elliott 81% and Christmas-Giles 75%. There is no way they take 4 or 5 dt’s in this class, they also still are in need of a S and RB. So that leaves us with 1 DT I would think. I’m hoping for Daniels or Taylor.

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

I believe they do not have a DT in the last two classes, they might take 4-5 just for depth

      • Framoka says:

I read on the “other” TFB site UT is possibly taking 5-6 DT’s. They are devoid of bodies at that position.

        • Soonerfandave84 says:

Yeah they haven’t been able to land anyone but Lampkin the last two years, and we all know how that went

        • soonerborn says:

I would not sign with a team that’s signing more than 3 at my positions. CRAZY

    • Malicong says:

They are probably taking 5-6 DT’s. Crazy as it sounds, they are in real need of big guys in the middle.

    • cush creekmont says:

texsa pretty much wiffed last year, while OU loaded up. OUr coaches would be silly to reach this year. Given the start on ’17, it makes more sense to push for DTs in that class.

  • kt-raida says:

really hope Kelly and Youngquist makes it to Norman, Southall was a guy i was never really that high on ,but good luck to him wherever he ends up.

    • Mr. Jones says:

If we end up losing both Youngquist and Kelly, that would be a huge blow to our LB class. Obviously it’s of no fault of BY or OU in his case, but still the perception and talent would be considerably lower.

    • PlayLikeaChampion says:

Youngquist is a stud, so let’s hope he has a chance. Regardless, hoping the best for him and his family.

  • Gary Robbins says:

Correct times or changes? Did I miss any of our targets?
    Chris Daniels 7:45 am OU/Texas
    Mykel Jones 8:00 am
    Jared Mayden 9;00 am OU/Alabama
Caleb Kelly 5;30 pm OU/N. Dame
    Joshua Jacobs NSD
    Marcel Southall NSD OU/Miami/Texas
    Parrish Cobb NSD OU/Baylor
    Riley Cole NSD
    Maxs Tupai NSD OU/Utah

  • @DallasSooner says:

Hate missing out on Riley Cole. Staff knows best I guess; but I’d rather have him over that Juco we took.

    • PlayLikeaChampion says:

Different positions, if you are referring to Beal. Doucet is a better prospect football ready now than Cole. Both are 4.5 to 4.55, while Cole is a 4.75.

OU recruited Beal for situational packages for his speed and unique blitzing ability without getting clocked at the line of scrimmage.

  • Mizuno44 says:

We’re most likely not going to see any of the 2016 class on the field this season, maybe one or two. Much more interested to follow Spring ball and see who’s going to step up out of the 2014 and 2015 recruiting classes, more relevant IMO.

  • Tim Wilson says:

Cobb, Kelly, Mayden, and Jones….. 3 out of 4 and I am happy. 4 out of 4 and I’m on cloud 9.

  • Soonerboyz says:

    No DT?

  • Chas Taylor says:

Joshua Jacobs, is OU still recruiting him? If so, what are the chances he ends up at OU?

  • soonerinks says:

Guesses for a surprise commit tomorrow? I will go way out in right field and say Little.

  • David Morris says:

I think I might just drink myself dumb today, so tomorrow gets here quicker. If my posts start to make no sense, you know why.

  • kt-raida says:

Well everybody tomorrow marks one of the best days of my life . Tomorrow will be the most significant day of my life hands down I might take off of work and have a cigar party I don’t know though. I’m speaking of my birthday…. what you guys thought I was talking about national signing day?

  • Maverick says:

Daniels would’ve been nice, but isn’t really at a position of need imo.

How bout this DB class if we land Cobb, Mayden, Sylvie, and Parker?? Kerry Cooks is lighting it up!

Kelly feels like a Sooner. LB class is huge numbers wise.

The only position I feel like we’ve failed a bit in is Wr. We need to really hope the guys on campus step up.

    • Kelly Gurbcock says:

imo you still have to take a DT in this class. you must continue to build and develop depth.

    • PlayLikeaChampion says:

Always need at least one DT/NG, but that doesn’t necessarily have to be Daniels. OU should have recruited that spot nationally and more aggressively.

      • Maverick says:

Well Lampkin ending up at OU was a huge “get”. And I think we were recruiting nationally before Montgomery left. Confident Coach Reynolds will get a big fish in 17′. Between Gallimore, Lampkin, and Q, I think we can afford to not take one this year.

      • Brian says:

We don’t need a NT – We have Wade, Overton, Romar, and Gallimore. Daniels was just good enough to go after…

    • Jim Casy says:

I was looking and it looked like we had seven? true freshmen this year and 3 more RSFR? Maybe somebody steps it up there.

    • Exiled In Ohio says:

Agree. WR is critical. DT would have been nice, but I think we will be OK if we get a couple in 2017.

      • Brien Brown says:

As I said above WR’s in this class won’t look so bad if Ryan Parker ends up at OU, mix in the PSU transfer who can play this year, Hardy, Farrar, and potentially Motley and maybe M. Jones we won’t look as bad. But, with that said the targets at WR for 2017 is loaded more WR targets than there was this year! DT we only need 1-2 next year the following year would be the year we needed to load up on DT’s IMO!

        • soonerthunder says:

agree. Parker looks really, really good. hope we get him on campus. but lewis will be a good addition, and probably farrar down the line at least. as you said, possibly jones, motley and who knows where hardy will play (I don’t). Jacobs would be an excellent get too at slot/rb/everything.

          • Brien Brown says:

Lewis FWIW looks like he could play in or out, I fully expect to see Westbrook shift over to the Shep spot and be that guy this year!

          • soonerthunder says:

i think we hv some good guys to pick from this yr. riley wants 8 guys, and westbrook, imo, will be a stud like shep this yr, and I could see lewis having the successful yr that brown did when he came from psu a couple yrs back–lewis is a good wr. Baxter will be good, as will mead imo, and green. there are several others who could too,and I think will, esp andrews. but of the new guys, farrar/jacobs/jones look like they might could come in and help as FR. I don’t know anything about hardy or even what position he plays for sure.

I’m probably leaving someone out, but for the 8 rotation I can see westbrook, andrews, baxter, mead, lewis, green being successful contributors this next season. I’m probably leaving someone else out I also think will help this yr, but I could see a farrar/jacobs/jones making their way into that group too.

Personally, I think we have the WRs to run this O successfully. I think it’s the OL giving our QB time and the QB making the right decisions. The running game will be fine, imo. It will be whether coach B and coach riley get the OL and QB prepared and they call the right plays.

          • Brien Brown says:

I think Micah Quick could be special next year as well, just wait on it, the kid is getting bigger and by what I have seen on Twitter is working hard to get better and stronger. I think he is my breakout guy in the WR corp!

          • soonerthunder says:

thanks. me too. sorry I forgot him, but yes he’s going to be good, and very likely a starter. I thought I was forgetting someone, probably some others too (todd, the guy from mcalester possibly–woods–couldn’t think of his name right away)

          • soonerthunder says:

i don’t know if you’d call my guy a breakout guy, but I think it’s going to be westbrook. but I hope you are right. would love to see quick breakout, and would like andrews to have even bigger year, doubling what he had last year, at least.

          • Brien Brown says:

Well I think Westbrook is the X-Factor of the WR’s and will be the Shep this year IMO so he will have to step up in my eyes a lot and be better than last year. Andrews could kill it next year no doubt I’ve said it now more than I should he is Gronk 2.0

    • Brian says:

      Don’t forget Motley!!!

      • Maverick says:

I did! Is he projected at corner?

        • Brien Brown says:

They say he was recruited as a DB but, my gut is he will end up as a slot he looks real good on film as a WR. Hardy, Farrar, and the PSU transfer count as WR’s for this class and still up in the air with Ryan Parker, but, if he shows it won’t have been such a bad WR class def. not if M. Jones ends up a Sooner!

    • soonerthunder says:

maybe a bit, but maybe not, too. I think Lewis is a tremendous pick up, westbrooke will be a stud this next yr, and I love this farrar kid. fantastic speed and height and size. we have guys his height, but not sure they have his speed, and not sure any with his height on the team have his weight–n/counting andrews who I think plays a different position anyway. (someone can correct me about the size and speed for our tall wrs.) also, if we get jacobs or jones, I think we did a super job at wr

      • Jim Casy says:

One website had 4.51 “verified” for Farrar…that looks maybe too fast but who knows…love the way he goes and gets the ball and his height, just a hair below 6’4″.. I think he is a DH/OF in baseball so we aren’t getting some tall goofy guy with no hand/eye coordination,

        • soonerthunder says:

I thought I wanted wims, and some others like him, but when farrar came up, I was pleased. Of course, we don’t know until they get on campus, but I loved his speed and size. very athletic. I’m wanting OU to get a DGBIII or dez bryant or tcu/baylor big/fast/athletic outside WR, and farrar might be the guy. we’ll see. I love Mead, great size, but about 20lbs lighter, I’d imagination (don’t know). farrar looks to me like he’s got the 3 things I would like to have in at least one outside WR: height, weight, and speed. rare

          • Jim Casy says:

I’ve heard some positives about his route instincts for a high school kid. Haven’t heard anything bad about his hands.

    • KJ1123 says:

Yeah Im ok on Daniels, I’ve watched him play and he’s a good player. But we have some good young DLs, I feel well be fine if he decides to go somewhere else. He’ll be a good college player as well.

  • PlayLikeaChampion says:

Not adding 5 star Kyler Murray and 4 star Geno Lewis into the discussion? Major roster additions that sets the bar of competition high.

  • bjwalker82 says:

Chris Daniels….he’ll be a perfect Longhorn.

  • Collin says:

Forward thinking just a bit, I for one am excited for the QB competition after Baker graduates. IMO, Austin Kendall has the capability to be a fantastic college QB as it is. Throw in Kyler into the mix for competition’s sake and whoever takes the field that year is going to be a stud. Future is bright for our program.

    • PlayLikeaChampion says:

Kendall’s improvement from his junior to senior year was night and day. His arm is very live. Kyler just needs to follow Baker’s lead during his redshirt.

  • Boomerman73 says:

We always have surprises but any word on maybe a recruit we don’t have any idea about that could sign? Just saw LR started following Donovan Peoples Jones WR Detroit Michigan? Thought that was interesting.

  • Dallas Johnson says:

so.. am I correct in saying that we are willing to take 4 more.. But not really wanting more than that correct? And those we are wanting are: Kelly, Cobb, Mayden and Jones.. accurate?

  • Will Narramore says:

Is the PJ Blue situation kinda like if the coaches find out early in the day Kelly is going to ND that they tell Blue they have a spot for him if he wants to flip?

    • PlayLikeaChampion says:

I think the coaches already know where Kelly is heading. Blue is more of a SS/OLB. He’s like Beal, but more SS experience.

    • yungkobra says:

This is on Josh Jacobs 🙁

    • SoonerfanTU says:

I’m not convinced Jacobs is as good as some folks think he might be. Guess we’ll know in a few years, but I won’t lose sleep over losing him, especially if we get the Mykel Jones kid.

      • cush creekmont says:

Reading between the recruiting lines, I guessed that the coaches saw him as a possible slot and part-time RB, not the feature. We will need a RB or two next year, but right now, we need WRs – current guys to step up or new guys coming in.

        • Jim Casy says:

I think it is simply a credit to the stockpile we have right now at RB. I love Adams and Anderson…Mixon will probably go one more year and this will likely be Samajes last. Oh, and that Alex Ross guy that got lost in the shuffle…he got one more year?
It is so crazy Keith Ford is in aggyland.

      • Brien Brown says:

Jacobs would be a great fit at TU in their system IMO. He would be a change of pace guy but never a feature back at OU or Bama no way no how! I can see him being used to feild punts and line up as a slot at OU and I think Bama is just pulling his chain that he will be a featured back there he is not the type they usually go for. Just something fishy about the kid but I wish him well wherever he goes. I know the TFB guys liked him but, maybe they see more than I do which they are the experts!

  • Johnny Greenlantern Otis says:

so with moore going the juco route are things still dead with ou?

    • KJ1123 says:

Not necessarily….but he will be off he radar for at least a year.

      • DrewChubbs says:

I bet they keep tabs on him if the mutual interest is still there. He could be a big boost to a future class if he works hard.

    • TSFFKAG says:

Moore really likes OU, and Sooners really LOVE Moore. Its just in God’s timing, if it is to happen.

  • Okie403 says:

Just got my breaking news email update from my old Scout account!! For Jackson!!!! That’s soooo 18 hours ago…thx TFB guys

  • j l says:

Honestly if we just get kelly and mayden, id be ok with that. WR dosent feel so desperate since we got farrar, our 2nd biggest position of need. WIth jackson on board now, kelly is versatile enough to plug any other hole at LB, our biggest position of need.

Going 2 for 2 seems like a very attainable goal.

    You can do eeet!

  • KJ1123 says:

So most likely Kelly, Cobb, Mayden and Jones tomorrow. I like it.

    • Jim Casy says:

I will high five your avatar tomorrow if that happens.

    • Brien Brown says:

      I’ll give it a fist a bump!

    • Mr. Jones says:

Thoughts on who the surprise might be?

      • Higgs Boson says:

        Velus, Mr. Jones

      • Brien Brown says:

At this point Mr. Jones I think there is no surprises unless it’s one of the guys above, the biggest IMO would be Daniels really just my POV. Mean it seems Kelly and Mayden according to everyone else not on this site would be surprises!

      • Bob Edwards says:

If we knew, it wouldn’t be a surprise would it. 🙂

Seriously though, schools’ classes are filling up and people are being told they may need to grey shirt. There are always a few players that suddenly become available right at the end.

        • Mr. Jones says:

Ha! I suppose you’re right. Maybe I should have worded my question differently.

To your point, I will gladly accept any talented players that do become available.

  • metzker says:

Ok guys i cant keep up.Spend an hour in the field come back to trailor and bam,
200 comments behind.Busy day at work, ill check back before my daily drive home.
    O and BOOMER!

  • Brien Brown says:

I still feel in my heart FWIW that Kelly will be a Sooner and if I am wrong well it won’t be the first time nor the last. Mayden I also think will be a Sooner as I think Jones will be also Mykel that is. Would be ok with a Daniels flip but you know. Cobb just it seems weird he would want to go to Baylor or Texas at this point but, that’s the Sooner in me talking!

    • Rick says:

Brian, I like the rest of us want it all, but if we keep Cobb, get Kelly and Mayden, I will be very happy.

  • Dana Rogers says:

At best Coach Strong is 50%|50% on being UT’s head coach after next year. Heck, I’d be surprised if he makes it past the RRR. If your a young man and his family looking to play there that would raise some serious red flags. I know the smart money says Mr. Daniels stays in state but I got 25 cents says he signs with the good guys.

  • Doobie74OU says:

To someone in the know! So is it a situation were if OU gets Mayden it opens a spot for Jones and we loose him to Bama or is it a numbers thing with WRs at Bama and neither decision will effect the other?

    • Malicong says:

I have been trying to figure out Alabama’s scholarship numbers myself. I think it is more of a positional thing. Alabama almost always over-signs so the total number can be ‘worked out’.
They currently have 1 CB committed and another highly ranked CB expected to sign on NSD. They have 2 WR’s committed and 2 ATH and while I don’t know where they are projecting them to play, I have heard one for each side. That would be 3 CB’s and 3 WR’s before Mayden, Jacobs, and Jones.
Best I can tell, they have 17 returning DB’s on the roster. I don’t know enough about them to separate the S and CB’s are some are non-scholarship players. Of those 17, 4 are 5* prospects and 8 are 4* prospects. The majority are freshman and sophomores. Taking 4 CB’s would be a bit much IMO but who knows what Saban is thinking.
At WR, they have 13 returning players (again some are non-scholarship) with 6 being 4* and 5* players and 11 were freshman and sophomores this year. I don’t see them taking 4-5 players there either.

  • Mr. Jones says:

What happened with Garrett Rand? I know there were some rumblings a few weeks ago and then nothing else was said.

  • Indy_sooner says:

Shout out to Burnt Orange Nation for giving credit to K and TFB on the Mark Jackson story. It’s incredible that we were able to overcome the allure of Aggieland and Austin to get this kid.

  • Barry Duren says:

    Cobb to Baylor. Just reported.

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

Well if that is true then Mayden is even more important.

  • Eddie and Amber says:

Good post … it would have been great post without the negative tone/momentum. Damn the ups and downs of recruiting season.

  • Jordan Esco says:

    update added

  • NM Sooner says:

There really needs to be an early signing period, this kind of crap must drive the coaches (and the fans) nuts.

  • TSFFKAG says:

The signees will shine even brighter, now.

  • Okie403 says:

If Cobb jumps to BU or UT, then it may be a bummer. Don’t get me wrong, I’d luv to see a talent like that in Crimson, but seriously his actions over last few days give me pause and concern that his “look at me” attitude won’t fit well in OUr teams chemistry. Tried that a few years back and we see what kind of house cleaning that it took to get rid of such a cancer. I don’t think Cobb would be looking to tie anyone’s shoe ala Baker. Esp when you come in saying I’m only stay 3 years or 4 max. This ain’t Calipari’s Kentucky bball team.

    Sorry got on a rant….

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

Okay so does OU try to go after anyone else now that he decommited

  • Mizuno44 says:

Opens a spot for someone else, who will it be?

  • Jason Vos says:

Well, if its true then next man up. I guess we can get PJ Blue or Riley Cole

  • SoonerMagic76 says:

Well. Darn. Hope that’s not true.

  • Sooner Jay says:

I don’t usually drink, but when I do it’s because of college football recruiting!

    • Eddie and Amber says:

Larry Naifee (sp?) doing some WORK.

    • Jim Casy says:

      Yeah. That’s gonna happen.

    • SCKSChief says:

Bwahahahaha! “Please don’t use your First Amendment rights. Thank you.”

    • SoonerfanTU says:

lol, happens literally every second of every day. NO way to police that.

      • Soonerfandave84 says:

in response to what they were saying on the morning animal, I wonder?

Some guy creates twitter acct, trolls Caleb Kelly in OU’s name.

        • SoonerfanTU says:

For lots of reasons (sheer volume being one), but yes, that is another good reason.

          • Soonerfandave84 says:

the length people go to is crazy. You want to say hello and love to see you in Crimson and Cream go for it, anything else is stalking IMO

          • Brad Warren says:

Right. I have tweeted welcome young man when a guy commits but that’s it. Usually they or their parents immediately like it. OU compliance can educate and somewhat control the players – not fans.

    • KJ1123 says:

      yeah good luck with that

    • Fear The Magic says:

Oh ok…and please let us know when we can go to the bathroom as well.

    • KJ1123 says:

Newsflash…..Texsa, ND, Pokie State, and all the other OU haters dont care…

    • Clint Lenard says:

What’s the NCAA going to do, punish a school when they really have no clue where that “fan” is from? That’s opening up a HUGE can of worms if they do…

      • Rick says:

How many times do jerks throw up fake accounts, pose as a fan and troll. The opposite could be true to bait a local compliance dept. from self reporting. “can of worms” would be an understatement.

        • Clint Lenard says:

I can setup accounts with proxies to appear that I live near that school (let’s say Austin), and even an emaip account that says “[email protected]”… let it “bake” nicely for half a year and then SCREAM AT SOMEBODY’S MOM LIKE THIS. This is why recruits shouldn’t trust stuff like that. It’s too easy to hide behind social media accounts.

      • Rick says:

How many times do jerks throw up fake accounts, pose as a fan and troll. The opposite could be true to bait a local compliance dept. from self reporting. “can of worms” would be an understatement.

    • ColoradoSooner says:

      Shut down the interweb!

    • ColoradoSooner says:

      Shut down the interweb!

    • TSFFKAG says:

Sounds like an important topic to discuss at conference meetings. All schools should warn recruits of nuts on the internet saying and doing stupid stuff, unethical stuff, even perhaps illegal stuff. It should be handed out in recruiting packets in large print.

    • PlayLikeaChampion says:

Don’t do it, but the NCAA can’t control it. Too many fake social media accounts to get it right or wrong.

    • kt-raida says:

they can’t govern the Internet dealing with fans.

      • Brad Warren says:

Exactly – that’s ridiculous. So does this somehow mean fake fan that tweets nonsense to recruits like yesterday is okay because he’s not an actual fan or supporter? What about players posting interactive polls begging fans to participate? There is no way to police this. Sorry OU compliance, you’re not that powerful.

    • Indy_sooner says:

Silly, unenforceable rule. So basically anybody that watches college football cannot talk to high school kids.

  • Sooner Scoop says:

    Farewell Mr. Cobb

  • j l says:

I really hope they didnt intentionally tell us Cobb was coming knowing he was going to flip, leaving us no time to replace him.

It sounds like something briles would ask a kid to do though.

  • Maranatha846 says:

Hate to see him flip, but remember……we got one of the farmers commits yesterday, and would gladly take one from someone today. It’s all good.

  • TSFFKAG says:

If he doesn’t like OU why string us along? It’s fascinating, really.

  • Stephen says:

Actually hoping we miss on Southall and Blue

  • TSFFKAG says:

Will Dalton Wood follow Lane Johnson’s path to success? Can he?

  • Randy says:

I fully expect to see a Jarvis Baxter, Austin Roberts type situation after tomorrow. No sure what position or how late or close to the season it will be. But I expect 1 or 2 more prospects to be added to the ’16 class after tomorrow.

    • PlayLikeaChampion says:

No need. OU is full at ships unless they dump Baxter and Roberts and that aint happening.

  • TSFFKAG says:

Is anyone getting together a prospective 3 deep chart for release tomorrow night, for the Houston game? I’m getting antsy this groundhog day.

  • Zack says:

Well I’m gonna take the rest of the day off. See you guys tomorrow. I’m picking Valentin to be the first fax tomorrow, of the non early enrolles.

  • rphokc says:

looking at the times posted for signings tomorrow and it looks like the ‘suspense’ for the uncommitted will be over very early for everyone except kelly which is early evening

  • Rick says:

I was quite sure academics was the problem, this kinda confirms it.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

What a waste. Not much that irks me more than a talented kid who can potentially get paid to play football down the road, that can’t even take care of his HS schoolwork.

      • kt-raida says:

maybe school doesn’t come easy to him, we can’t always assume it’s a lack of effort.

      • kt-raida says:

maybe school doesn’t come easy to him, we can’t always assume it’s a lack of effort.

      • BoomerDave says:

That’s pretty cold seeing as how you know nothing about the kid or how difficult studies can be for some. Also, it’s far from a waste. Many kids have risen through the JUCO ranks to live out their NFL dream. Best of luck to Tramonda and hope to see you in Crimson and Cream in 2 years.

      • Maverick says:

Not many national merit scholars coming from John Marshall.

And like Dave said, going to get immediate paying time at a juco isn’t always a bad thing.

      • Bob Edwards says:

All of my adopted children have struggled academically. Some are very bright but when you spend the first ten years of your life or so in a third world orphanage your options for academic success are limited.

I agree with you that it is frustrating to see young people waste opportunities they have been given. However, without a more thorough knowledge of a young man’s situation, it’s hard to know whether he’s wasting a chance or having some success despite tremendous odds.

        • SoonerfanTU says:

Clearly Moore isn’t suffering b/c he was raised in a third world country.

Look, I fall into this discussion on one of two sides. Either Moore is so developmentally challenged that he shouldn’t be going to college regardless of his athletic ability, or he is “able” enough to make the qualifying grades if he works hard at it. You are right, I don’t know 100% of the details, but I’m willing to make an educated guess that he simply hasn’t put in the work. And even if learning doesn’t come easy to him, it’s still most likely just a case of not wanting to put the effort in. That is a true statement 99% of the time.

Not trying to be a jerk about it, just a pet peeve of mine. HS is not difficult. It’s not difficult to slide by with a 70% in each class. Basically showing up and turning in your homework gets you there. JMO.

    • BigJoeBrown says:

      Lackawana?

    • Defend Colfax says:

You guys can back him for not making it academically and say whatever you want but it is ridiculously simple to graduate high school. Maybe if he would have stayed home from a couple recruiting trips to study for the ACT, this would all be nothing. By the way, you can take that test as many times as you want. Coaches and parents deserve blame.

      • cush creekmont says:

Yes. 100% with you Colfax. And a lot more parents, teachers, etc. of NON-athletes need to make sure their children take school seriously.

      • soonerthunder says:

yes, it’s the parents mainly. Not the teachers. You cannot turn a guy around in one year academically in most situations, esp., those kids who are born to teenagers, who don’t raise their own kids, care nothing about school, and are without discipline. They go to school and teachers try but when there is no nutrition, no care at all when they get home, they don’t care when/if they sleep, the parents (teenagers) themselves are immoral and in gangs, etc, (not saying this was case here or anywhere specifically), a teacher will not turn these kids around in one year. I remember substituting at John Marshall a few times years ago. The kids would not do work. In fact, I knew where the basketball players were–in the gym playing basketball all day long, every hour. I’d been pretty good at basketball if I played 8 hrs a day before practice too. The gym teachers couldn’t do anything because the basketball thugs took the court. Kids like this aren’t going to magically pass the ACT. I’ve seen their parents walk into school and I thought they were younger than their HS student/child. And much less mature too. They sit there and watch fighting and sex on their phones all day long, and many, many of the girls are pregnant in 9th grade, and quite a few have kids before 9th grade. IMO the only way to turn things around in the inner city is to get a good dose of morals. Don’t have sex outside of marriage and stay married, and that would go a long, long way to improving things, but not many want to hear this. They want to blame society, teachers, the government, etc.

        • Jed says:

tend to agree, but the real key is that there’s no ‘they’; there’s only ‘we’. Keep yourself squared away and then get involved in your community. You won’t ‘win’ every fight, but you’ll find yourself less frustrated.

  • Rick says:

Some of you may have missed the Tulsa World story on Jacobs.

    • KJ1123 says:

May be just me but it would seem he would excel better in LRs offense than Lanes offense. Hope he doesn’t get buried in the depth chart if he chooses Bama.

      • Rick says:

Kids can take it too far either way IMO. Some kids think more highly of themselves than they should and wind up wasting on a depth chart, either from not quite talented enough or from not really fitting the program. Other kids take a look at the roster and give up saying, I can’t crack that lineup, I’ll go elsewhere, where I can start right away.

        • KJ1123 says:

Yeah I think kids really don’t think it all the way through. There are some kids who will absolutely destroy it where ever they go. But there are alot of kids that need to really sit down and strategize about where they could go to maximize their talents and possibly get a shot at playing after college. Not just go where the coaches are cool for example.

    • KJ1123 says:

May be just me but it would seem he would excel better in LRs offense than Lanes offense. Hope he doesn’t get buried in the depth chart if he chooses Bama.

So he wants to work in engineering, and he’s particularly interested gas exploration and management. You combine that with football, and how could he be considering any school other than OU?

  • Mizuno44 says:

So, if you’re Tramondous, how do you set a date for your announcement decision between two schools, neither of which you can attend because of grades? Shouldn’t you now that beforehand, maybe?

I think if you go JUCO because of grades, you’re using that associates degree to by-pass the lack of grades. So I think that means it has to be 2 years. If you go JUCO for other reasons, I think you can transfer after the 1 year and still be eligible. But maybe someone with more information than me can chime in.

    • Doobie74OU says:

Texsa just picked up 4 star RB Kyle Porter from Katy HS. He was behind Rodney Anderson. For what it is worth, Riley Cole to announce at 2pm today.

  • Mizuno44 says:

Good article describing today’s recruiting landscape, may explain some of the wild rides we’ve either won or lost…for what it’s worth, a former boss of mine a few years ago had a daughter being recruited for D1 basketball, listened to a lot of his conversations with her recruiters, lots of maneuvering that goes on.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

    from the 4 letter network

“Further, Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield, fourth in the balloting, is really a sophomore, seeing he’s redshirted and played two years. He’s considered a junior only because the Big 12 and Texas Tech, where he was a walk-on before transferring to Oklahoma, have yet to figure out that being petty and officious with a misapplication of rules isn’t what institutions of higher education are supposed to role model.”

    • Okie403 says:

There are some big words in there. You sure the media wrote that??? I may have to Google up a couple of them

    • Mark_in_VA says:

I guess it’d be less of a concern if Mayfield was a sure-fire NFL prospect. But this may be his last stage as a starter, or even at all. And Kliffy can’t bother to lift a pen to give the kid one more year to enjoy his dream? Coach Bro is just a douche.

  • KJ1123 says:

I like what Tupai is doing. You don’t have to sign on NSD. Why not take the rest of your trips. UCLA is interesting, a few Samoan coaches there, he didn’t really like USC but Westwood is a lot different.

  • Matt says:

I’ve said this a ton but I love Mark Jackson’s tape. I’m trying to find a player we’ve seen in CFB recently like him..the only one I can think of is Vic Beasley. Anyone else have somebody different?

Some sports guru’s on twitter are speculating this has everything to do with Cobb decommitting.

      • Hotrod33 says:

Could be. I look at it this way, if he wants to be a Sooner then good. One door closes another one opens for another. Last minute changes are happening everywhere.

      • Nate Broadus says:

If OU gets Maxs Tupai in exchange for Parrish Cobb, I’ll consider that a big time win.

DB is going to be fine with Cooks; we need linebackers now.

      • j l says:

Like as far as having the scholly available to take him? I dont see the correlation otherwise between a DB and a LB.

A few former Sooners on the Mizzou staff this year. Josh, Shipp, Cooper, Halzle…interesting… the head coach played for Mizzou but is a Maysville/Lawton boy and coached at ADA…

    • Hotrod33 says:

He played two years at Maysville and then his family moved to Ada and he finished his last two years there. Went on to play at Mizzou. His your brother Brad went to OU and then transferred to East Central in Ada.

    • RBear says:

      Finley

I played HS ball with Barry Odom at Ada High. That dude was a beast and so were his brothers. I am so happy for him and wish him nothing but the best unless he plays OU.

  • TSFFKAG says:

Maxs Tupai realizes OU is a bigger platform should he want to be drafted later. But right now, Norman feels a gazillion miles from home.

  • TSFFKAG says:

Bundage is from OKC. Where has his OUDNA been? …Very curious.

  • Nate Broadus says:

Tupai delaying his decision, hopefully, is a good sign for OU. Utah and USC have been in the picture all the while. With any luck, OU’s entry into the equation has shaken things up.

    • RBear says:

IF players can still contact recruits (Tupai doesn’t Tweet), Samia needs to keep the flow going.

    • KJ1123 says:

Almost certain he wont go to USC so may be down to Utah OU and UCLA.

    • TSFFKAG says:

I’m biased, of course, but if he wants the best shot at being a star on a championship caliber team… leading to a life-changing contract in the NFL… the choice is easy.

    • bmrsnr says:

Delaying is bad for us, more than likely means he is visiting UCLA this weekend. They have been pushing for him to forgo signing and visit them.

  • Johnny Greenlantern Otis says:

watching slyvie and lumpkin on periscope was pretty interesting. they didnt seem phased by cobb leaving but excited about mayden possibly

  • KJ1123 says:

I like Bundage, but I’d rather have Tupai.

  • Borba22 says:

Bundage’s renewed interest in OU isn’t exactly mutual.

    • BoomerDave says:

      And you know this how??

      • KJ1123 says:

        Foil caps….duh /s 🙂

      • Borba22 says:

OU hasn’t been recruiting him for awhile, and he might have some incentive to put the OU hat back on the table as the team he is trending to would really like a win over OU.

        • Nate Broadus says:

I never subscribe to conspiracy theories — but I hope that is true.

Jesus Christ, that would be beautiful. And poetic. A team wants a win against OU so bad, they prod a future commit to feign interest just so they can claim a last second “win” on signing day?

That’s worthy of a harlequin tragedy. It’s so funny, yet so gorgeously sad at the same time.

          • Borba22 says:

When you’re competing for the same recruits, especially instate kids, you got to do whatever it takes to make it look like kids are choosing you over the big named instate program.

            Definitely made me chuckle though.

  • j l says:

Where would bundage fit? isnt he like a s/lb hybrid?

    • curt gomer says:

looks that way, seems alot of outlets see him as a DB.

      • j l says:

Feels like we are trying to get away from having too many ‘tweeners, which is probably a good idea.

Think bundage fits that bill, 6’3 CB’s that arent blazing fast are destined to be a ‘tweener IMO.

        • Doobie74OU says:

6’3″ 200lbs may make a good Safety though. Tony Jefferson ran a 4.72 at NFL combine and he had a decent carrier and a lot of Safeties are in the 4.5 to 4.7 range and Bundage is listed a 4.56 so it could work.

          • j l says:

True, but we turned down shurrod thompson(parkers buddy) because we were full at safety. Dont see why we would take bundage at that spot.

  • Brien Brown says:

I am making it official I will be signing on another year with TFB and will be a Brainiac for another year. I fully expect it to be a year filled with drama and more concern then needed. • j l says:

If NSD is the earliest kids can sign, how do mid-term enrollee’s get past that?

    • PlayLikeaChampion says:

Earliest kids can sign NLI. Midterms don’t sign NLIs.

    • Daddy R says:

They are already graduated from HS, so signing rules might differ for them..

    • KatyOUdad says:

They actually sign a financial aid package. As well, they are graduates from HS too.

    • Bob Edwards says:

Early enrollee – High school players who are on track to graduate after the first semester of their senior year and intend to enroll in college in January. These players sign scholarship papers/financial aid agreements but not NLIs. The scholarship papers bind the school to the player, but not vice versa. For example, Josh Malone was an early enrollee in the 2014 class and he signed scholarship papers with Tennessee, Georgia, Clemson and Florida State but ultimately enrolled at Tennessee last January. Enrolling early is beneficial for a player because it allows them to go through spring practice. Early enrollees are beneficial for programs in that they can also “back count” them – a term will address next – to the previous year.

Back counting – Any player who signs a financial aid agreement has to be listed as an “initial counter” and be assigned to a specific recruiting class. If a player is an early enrollee, he can be an initial counter with the current recruiting class or he can be back counted to a previous class that had room available. Early enrollees can help programs navigate around scholarship limits for a specific season and can sometimes lead to “oversigning,” a controversial practice we’ll discuss next. So if school “A” has room for 25 commitments in this class and can back count seven early enrollees to previous recruiting classes, they can actually sign 32 players in this class.

I commented on this a week or two ago. I agree completely.

I liked getting the little tease through the year and then signing day was like the lottery.

It will never be like that again, but if we get an early signing day, we get to at least allow the committed to lock up their schollies and relax. We also allow the coaches to narrow their focus to the remaining players and not have to be running like crazy people trying to hold an entire class together at a time when there is so much more pressure and opportunity to flip.

Been away most of the day so playing catch up.

Would like to say though, in the midst of all the BS from Cobb, etc I think we should pay more attention and give more appreciation to guys like Jordan Parker (just one of several examples). This kid is most likely better than any of the db recruits we have discussed (outside mayden possibly) and we don’t hear a sound about him. He’s all OU and has been since he gave his verbal. These are the kids that are the future champions for us. Not these attention seeking guys. I would take 10 guys like him over Cobb every day of the week.

He’s not the only one, just an example since Cobb has garnered so much attention of late. Several others in this class who are all OU all day every day. Looking forward to these guys excelling while these waffling kids whine, transfer, etc as they have often been known to do.

End of rant. Sorry, just hate this guy gets so much attention (Daniels too) with tweets, videos, blah, blah, blah, while a stud corner which we very much need to be successful calmly does his business. I am calling Parker as an AA by the time he leaves us.

Kudos to you kids that have shown what commitment really looks like.
