Open Post | Weekend, Apr. 17th – 19th (UPDATE Sat., 6:09 pm)

– Sione Heimuli-Lund: Not to dredge up the past, but one of many positive moves Jerry Montgomery made in regards to OU’s recruiting was his work establishing connections within the state of Utah. It paid dividends with the signing of Kenyon Frison, who has a legit chance to be the starter this year as a redshirt freshman, and the Sooners have also shown interest in 2017 WR Chaz Ah You (the nephew of former OU defensive end and current special teams QC coach, CJ Ah You). So it shouldn’t really surprise anyone that even with Montgomery having since moved on, the OU staff has continued to mine the Beehive State for talent. Most recently in the form of 2017 LB Sione Heimuli-Lund, who we told you yesterday will be in Norman this weekend for an unofficial visit.

We had a chance to catch up with him yesterday, and the young man was very up front in saying he’s always had a great interest in Oklahoma. And that interest only increased after the Sooners added Dennis Simmons to the staff, because the new OU assistant and Heimuli-Lund already had a previous relationship. Additionally, Heimuli-Lund told us he actually had some extended family who moved to Norman about two years ago. So he figured this visit would be a great chance to see them and take in a couple schools who have shown interest in his recruitment.

Again, we told you yesterday Heimuli-Lund does not currently hold an offer from the Sooners but that could change on Friday when he meets with the OU staff. And he told TFB if that offer does indeed come, it would be ‘huge’ and it would immediately make OU one of his top schools. And one would have to believe having family nearby could only help the Sooners’ chances down the road. It’s still very early with regards to the 2017 recruiting cycle, but coming out of the weekend we should have a much better idea of where things stand between the two parties. – (Brandon)

– More Weekend Visitors: Certainly wasn’t the busiest week in terms of news, but since we’re talking about visitors for this weekend we might as well remind you about Monday’s Open Post. With 2016 teammates Rodarius Williams and Chanse Sylvie expected in Norman this weekend, their third such trip to OU’s campus, a commitment from either, or even potentially both, may not be out of the question. – (Brandon)

– Abdul Adams: You may recall one of the very first offers that went out under new OC Lincoln Riley was to 2016 RB Abdul Adams (6’0″ 185 – Washington DC). Since then things have been a little quiet between the two, so we checked in with Adams earlier this week to get a feel for where things stand today.

Adams told he us is still ‘very high on OU’ and is just working to cut his list of schools down to around ten. He spoke highly of his relationship with OU’s offensive coaching staff. And added that he talks to them all, which shows they are making him a priority.  Adams says he would love to try and make it to Norman on an unofficial visit, but admits that potential travel plans have been an issue. However he was pretty adamant that if he can’t do so before then, he definitely plans to use one of his five official visits to check out Norman.

He went on to say in addition to OU, that Georgia and Iowa are the schools recruiting him the hardest right now. The talented 2016 RB is also pushing close to 30 offers. – (Brandon)

– UPDATE (Sat., 4:01 pm): In a bit of a surprise, 2016 CB Rodarious Williams has committed to Oklahoma State. Going to go out on a limb and say the OU visit that was planned for later this weekend probably doesn’t happen now (but that’s just a guess). Still a number of other prospects out there, but Williams was believed to be one of OU’s top targets prior to today’s commitment to their in-state rival.

– UPDATE (Sat., 6:09 pm): Couple quick updates before you all hit the town tonight. First, Brandon was able to confirm a couple things. (1) As expected, Rodarius Williams will no longer be making the trip to Norman this weekend following his commitment to Ok State. (2) Chanse Sylvie was not able to make the trip at all.

Also just in case this got missed from Friday, we wanted to post it here again regarding another visitor from this weekend.
