Mike Leach Confirms ‘Dennis Simmons To OU’ (UPDATED)

Image via WSU Athletic Communications

Washington State head coach Mike Leach confirmed today during a press conference that outside receivers coach Dennis Simmons will accept a position at the University of Oklahoma.

As many of you already know, this has been expected for a while now as it is very much in line with what we have reported previously (here & here).

– UPDATE: TFB’s Brandon Drake was able to speak with now OU signee and former Wazzu commit Dahu Green about the impending hire of Simmons, who was his primary recruiter and looks to be new position coach.

As you all know, Green was committed to Washington State for a couple months prior to his recent signing with Oklahoma. During that time, his main recruiter at Wazzu was none other than Dennis Simmons. Dahu told me that after his recent Sooners offer, he quickly found out about OU’s interest in Simmons.

His relationship with Simmons is a tight one, and Green referring to him as a “great man and coach.” Green was also pretty clear that the expectation Simmons would be coming to Norman was a major factor in his interest in the Sooners, although not the determining factor in his decision to commit. Green said just playing in Norman, in Riley’s system, with “a bunch of dogs at OU” was what sold him the most.

That said, you can look at Simmons’ recruiting background and know he is quite the recruiter. Never in his career has he had the resources that he’ll have at Oklahoma. Which is why I think this is a home run hire. It fits well with the youth being injected into the program and meshes great with the current offensive staff. Simmons coached with both Bill Bedenbaugh and Lincoln Riley at Texas Tech, and was also at at ECU under Riley.

I wonder if he’ll get the whole group or just inside/outside?

You could probably give inside Wr’s and TE’s to Boulware. We shall see.

Kish and Mike are going to be here in 2015. We all need to get over it and support them. I think I understand BGB’s attitude, i.e., we need a defense to hold even the best team to under 28, and we go 12-0 and are in the Final Four. Now, can Mike and Kish deliver that, who the fxck knows? I don’t. Outstanding defenses in the Big XII? There aren’t any. The best team in the conference in all likelihood was TCU and OU should have won the game with an offensive output of over 40 points. 7 points was clearly a gift from the defense, so TCU scored less than their winning 37 points on offense. This is a very strained defense of Mike and his crew, but with Cooks, improvement in quality of players, another year in the Mike ‘system’, and BGB is gambling his career, IMHO, he knows we are closer on defense than any of us want to recognize. The offense, he has gone out and hired someone to do what he truly believes in, and someone he feels comfortable in leaving alone calling plays. So, let’s quit skewering Mike and Kish and let this play out. If it works, we all enjoy. If not, we all get our sharp knives out to invite Caesar to the forum.

    • Fear The Magic says:

If they are here as mentioned then I’d bet anything they have just one year and no more to drastically improve the product that they put on the field last year. This will be their last chance.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Love it. You are right. MS And Kish should not be spoken of in such harsh terms any longer. They are the coaches. However, the rejoinder to give a fair criticism would be that MS and Kish have had two years. OU averaged 36 a game this year. That’s not enough?

      • Katyboomer says:

I would like to go younger and someone better able to relate to these young men at LB. I am ok with keeping mike but think we need a change at LB

      • GreginDestin says:

No, if FUJH and his boy Trevor give away about 7 free ones a game.

      • BoomerDave says:

In fairness, special teams and Defensive scores accounted for about 4-5 pts per gam last year. Also, those numbers are skewed by Kansas, Iowa St and Tulsa. I really only care about how many we scored in our losses.

      • Clint says:

No, 36 is not enough when Baylor is putting up 48 points per game and TCU is putting up 46 points per game. With OU’s talent level, OU should be putting up 40+ points per game.

And OU was still winning outright conference titles in the late 2000s despite the defense already slipping (sans the 2009 season’s salty defense) and Oklahoma was able to do that because of offense, not defense.

        • soonerthunder says:

Note when OU’s defenses were “slipping,” more and more B12 offenses were copying our offense, and all B12 defenses started to slip. Same with Pac12. Half of the Pac12 are running Oregon’s offense and their defensive stats are suffering, too. Look at the SEC. Since MU and A&M have come into the SEC, along with Miss and Miss St last yr running wide-open offenses, you don’t hear anything about how salty SEC defenses are anymore. Last couple of years–ESPN silent as a tomb on how great SEC defenses are. With more and more teams in SEC going to B12 offensive schemes, you’ll see Alabama & LSU lose a couple of times a yr, IMO, when these teams start getting the talent for their schemes, and perhaps start recruiting better QBs. Most important player on the field, by far, is the QB. SEC=no QBs, and make heros of Manziel, who would have been just another B12 QB if A&M had stayed in B12. He definitely wouldn’t have won a heisman in the B12.

        • soonerthunder says:

MU is winning the east every yr in SEC aren’t they? A&M’s average finish in the B12 the last ten yrs in the B12 was 8th! Go into SEC and they become world beaters, b/c they can score, which means, they can go into alabama and beat them @ alabama w/a FR QB.

    • brainpimp says:

Thanks, but I’ll speak any way I damn well please. If they are stinking the place up I’ll feel free to say so. Candy coating crap is still crap. It’s all in the results and they didn’t suddenly get better just because they didn’t get fired.

    • JTrain51 says:

What exactly is this “system” you speak of?

    • ND52 says:

I think it’s safe to say that this is Stoops’ last chance to turn it around. If he pulls a repeat of last year’s baffling playcalling—-on either side of the ball—-I think he’s gone.

      • BoomerDave says:

Whose gone? Bob? You’ve got to be kidding!!

        • ND52 says:

          @boomerdave:disqus

You think Stoops can survive another five-loss season? You think he can make horrendous decisions like re-kicking to OSU while doing so?

          • BoomerDave says:

It depends on how they play. There has to be improvement shown, no doubt. But seriously, there could be drastic improvement and we still lose 4-5 games with our unfavorable schedule next year. You guys act like these recruits are gonna come in and save the day. That ain’t happening folks!

          • ND52 says:

I’m not “you guys” @boomerdave:disqus . Nobody speaks for me, but me

          • BoomerDave says:

Ooooh, didn’t mean to ruffle you’re feathers! You’re just parroting what others have said so I lumped you in with them. Kinda of a birds of a feather thing.

          • ND52 says:

@disqus_BeW3hegp9d:disqus This isn’t political talk-radio so you can stop trying to create “sides” on here. If you need that kinda nonsense so badly, I’m sure you can find a replay of your favorite talking head somewhere online.

          • BoomerDave says:

You started the snark pal. Like I said, just chill out.

          • ND52 says:

            Lol! Okay “you guys”.

          • BoomerDave says:

Think about it seriously. We could play well and lose at Tennessee, at Baylor, at OSU, at K-State and at home vs TCU. That’s not even mentioning a bowl game. This team will NOT compete for NC next season unless we get unexpected miracle play at the QB position.

      • CoachTalk says:

This is what’s wrog with ou fans…

        • ND52 says:

Sorry to disappoint you @coachbrimmer:disqus but I just can’t handle the depression that low expectations causes.

          There’s always OSU though 😀

      • soonerthunder says:

No way. Yes, he can definitely survive another 5 loss season. I think it is “safe to say” there is no way they would fire him with another 5 loss season.

    • Super Keith says:

I’m still not convinced that Kish is staying on staff, but even if so you’re correct. There’s nothing that can be done (especially on our end) to change that. As frustrating as it is, I still hope for the best next year. Going into the 2013 year, everyone was convinced our defensive line would be horrid. That turned out much different. Whats to say the same thing doesn’t happen with the secondary next year.

Mike and Bob both realize that there is no wiggle room (for Mike). This is his make or break year. As a fan, I hope for the best from him.

    • FMsooner1 says:

If you look at the product they put on the field during the Baylor game it was clearly inadequate. West Virginia showed how to defense Baylor with inferior athletes to ours. Even during the game we made little or no adjustments that mattered as it seemed we were too busy having coaches yelling at each other or even players. If that is the product that you have resigned yourself to support, please go ahead. It is certainly not something I support and will continue to lobby for change.

      • soonerthunder says:

And OU scored 45 pts against WV at WV! Does that still mean WV shows us how to play D? Baylor played at WV, had a bad game. Every team will during the year, especially on the road. Baylor broke a B12 record with 18 penalties and over 200 yds in penalities. I”d say that might have had something to do with showing us how to defense Baylor–get the refs to call 18 penalties against Baylor–I predict we win, even if we play badly.
You can’t just take one bad game a team plays and throw that up as an eexample. Maryland, TT, UT also all scored more pts against WV than Baylor did. Are you wanting to argue that they all had better offenses than Baylor? Next yr, Baylor will have at least one or two games where they are not as prolific on offense. It won’t “prove” those teams necessarily can show OU anything.

        • FMsooner1 says:

West Virginia was overmatched by the OU offensive line and we ran the ball. Even when OU didn’t run the ball, the run set up the pass. In contrast to the Baylor vs WV game where Baylor tried to run and pass and fell victim to the constant blitzing by the WV defensive line. While the defensive line was blitzing the corners and safeties were forced to cover for a couple of seconds. This strategy worked most of the time and as you pointed out caused many penalties as the Baylor offense was off balance.
Now we have the OU vs Baylor game in which OU blitzed some of the defensive line but played off the receivers yielding 3 to 7 yards per play on the quick pass to the outsides. If the West Virginia corners could cover, why couldn’t the OU corners for a couple of seconds while you have one some of the best pass rushers in college football going after the QB?
The game plan that OU put on the field during the Baylor game was a joke and the fans knew it by the booing of the defense. It was embarrassing and clearly a half ass effort by the coaches. If that is the coaching you want to support, that is your choice. I choose not to support the half ass effort.

    • Indy_sooner says:

I think this is why they have emphasized depth on the backfield in this recruiting cycle. We signed 6 ELITE DBs yesterday. SIX. People keep saying Bob is oblivious or is not doing what needs to be done. This is just bitchn for the sake of it.
Mike/ Monty focusing on schemes/D- line play, Cooks/ Kish can tag team on the LB/ DBs and Simmons/Linc on QBs and the Air Attack while Coach B/ Cale on the Running game. All expert on what they do- Major differences from where we were at the end of the season.

    • soonerthunder says:

I agree support whomever the coaches are, not sure there won’t be further changes though.
Don’t agree that there are no good defenses in Big12; I’d rather say, there are tremendous offenses in the B12 that are incredibly difficult to defense. Look at Alabama last yr. Auburn scored 28 pts in regulation @Auburn, LSU 17, and no other team in SEC scored more than 10 pts. A&M (with B12 players and offense) and OU (the 4th best team in the B12 in the worst season the B12 has ever had, IMO) scored 42 and 45 pts on Bama. OU, with a FR QB who had only started 3 games! I think if LSU/Alabama played in the B12 we may not be so enamored with SEC defenses (not saying you are).
Anyway, I tend to say the offenses are incredible in the Big12 rather than no good defenses.
And, like you, I don’t like bashing coaches/players, even on the other teams, although I still think there might be a coaching change or two at OU.

  • Fear The Magic says:

Very engaging smile. I’m sure that’ll come in handy when hes out recruiting.

  • Lonnie White says:

I heard James Hale giving Kish high praise for his ability to be a great staff recruiter. I have not heard of many instances this year in which Kish was the lead recruiter and landed a big recruit. Heck I have not heard of his name being involved with one recruit in which he was the lead recruit. I am sure there are some though. I think Bob has really expressed his concern with Kish and Mike on there inadequacies. Luckily they have a solid group of linebackers as there disposal next year. If the D’fense is turned around who gets the credit? Bob? Montgomery or Mike?

    • Sooner Ray says:

Good players make good coaches, bad players make bad coaches……in most cases.

    • BoomerDave says:

The Hulk credited Kish for being the main reason he chose Oklahoma just this afternoonon KREF.

      • BoomerDave says:

Deberry also credited his relationship with Kish as a big part of his decision.

        • BoomerDave says:

And in the end he got two outstanding linebackers to come to OU,

          • Lonnie White says:

Actually everything I read and the interview with Deberry’s dad and alone with Deberry they both said Montgomery was the reason he chose OU and Montgomery alone.

          • BoomerDave says:

Just reporting what they said on the radio today. Dewberry credited both Monty and Kish pretty much equally.

          • JTrain51 says:

Monty got Deberry and helped get hulk. You’re giving Kish way too much credit as usual

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Coming from the players mouth it was Kish.

          • BoomerDave says:

Lol! And how do you know that Monty got Deberry?? Heard it on here? I heard it straight from Deberry’s mouth.

          • JTrain51 says:

            Hmmmmmm

          • BoomerDave says:

You can site all of the recruiting sites you want, dude. It doesn’t change he fact today that Ricky Deberry gave much credit to Coach Kish. Remember what Jordan always says, none of those sites know what they are talking about anyway! 😉

          • JTrain51 says:

And you can take up for Kish all you want but everyone has seen the product on the field, with lb’s looking lost especially in pass coverage and the middle of the field being wide open. We’ve seen Kish miss on lb’s over and over again since he’s been here. We’ve got 11 lb’s on scholarship. Top 2 are seniors. Top 6 are gone after 2016 season. We run a 3-4. We can’t get lb’s to commit and now we are very short on lb’s and that my friend is Kish’s fault. It’s not a difficult thing to see, is he your uncle or brother or something?

          • BoomerDave says:

Chill dude! I was just repeating what the players themselves said today, and you don’t want to believe them. Lol! It doesn’t really matter what you think of Kish, he is staying. I know, I know, K has said that his sources have told him that it’s pretty much a done deal that he is gone, but my source tells me that there are no more staff changes, at least that he is aware of and he should know. He is a high positioned exec in the football program and he hasn’t been wrong yet. He’s the same guy who told me Saturday that Wariboko wasn’t coming to OU relating things about his visit last weekend. I guess we will see who is correct.

          • JTrain51 says:

            hmmmmm

      • Lonnie White says:

Then I stand corrected…..although I though Montgomery was the man who got him….but I am probably wrong.

        • BoomerDave says:

Kish was he primary recruiter all along. Monty came in at the end, but he credited his long relationship with Coach Kish and looked forward to playing for him.

          • Lonnie White says:

Awesome! Then we know he can get the job done.

          • BoomerDave says:

He did finish 2nd on a lot of good LB’s, but I for one will not complain about the 2 that he did get.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Sounds good coming from the players mouth. That’s it then, no more bashing Kish for recruiting. However, we need improvement in the LBS against the pass don’t we?

          • boomersooner says:

that’s all you need. straight from the horses mouth instead of a bunch of john madden’s on the internet. how many of these guys on here do you think played a down past high school? or any sport for that matter?

        • John Garner says:

Kish was always a good LB coach. Now we’ll see just how good.

    • JD says:

I see too many people are just jealous that OU hired a blue collar coach rather than a shiny 5star guy…the facts are that Kish is a fine recruiter…one recruit (Wheeler or Thomas) said they were told we were only taking two backers this year…We got two of our top guys and would only go after other top recruits and not just filled a spot..Kish should be credited w part time starter Romar and Dimond on the Dline as well as KJ Young at wr among his recent guys…Last year he brought in two pretty good hs prospects in Tay Evans and Curtis Bolton (snagged him out of southern Cal) along w Juco star Bond…On sooner sports today DeBerry raved about Kish and says he can’t wait to learn from him…..as for who gets credit for the defensive turnaround next season, that will be Bob…he’s made moves to get dif personnel here and even keep the ones here that are still here and is still very much involved with the defense

      • boomersooner says:

i love this. its always…always the pessimists(well not always, it could be trolls from longhornland or aggieberg) who bring people down or start bullcrap rumors. a lot of people who think they know quite a bit about quite a bit and who also think very highly of themselves think they have their finger on the pulse of what went wrong with the d and where the fault lies, etc. there’s a reason why mike has the job he has and these people in a chat room have the jobs they have

        • JD says:

yep..most recruits I’ve heard talk about Kish love him..think he’s hilarious…just shows people judging a book by it’s cover…99% of those raggin on him have never met the guy or worked with him…you heard of Rob Gronkowski…guess who recruited him…yep..yours truly

          • boomersooner says:

            you’re kish? 🙂

yeah. i agree. just cause it ain’t how they’d do something they gotta rip it to shreds. the awful world we live in nowdays

          • JD says:

i know. i’ve just never heard “yours truly” in reference to someone else

  • Jordan Esco says:

Update added w/ some quotes from Dahu Green on the hire

    • Fear The Magic says:

Jordan I know that you guys got the impression after Dahu’s visit that at that point things didnt look good for OU. Im not sure if it was you or one of the other TFBs that made the comment but could you let us know why Dahu was giving you guys that impression? If its something that you’d rather not address I understand but I was just curious.

      • BoomerDave says:

I thought it was K that said things did not look good for Ozu with Dahu, but according to the coaches at Westmoore, he was sold on OU immediately following his visit thus his almost immediate commitment.

        • Fear The Magic says:

Very well could have been K. Just wonder what gave him that impression though.

          • BoomerDave says:

K said it was from talking to Dahu and those around him. But again, people around Westmoore told me it was a pretty much a done deal on Sunday.

      • Dahu played things close to the vest. He didn’t know, for sure, about Simmons until after his visit. That helped solidify things in OU’s direction.

      • BoomerDave says:

I remember how they were talking about Tech recruiting was on the upswing after they got commitment from Ketchum, and how TTU would dominate OU in recruiting with Kingsbury. Wasn’t their recruiting class ranked about 7th in he Big XII this year?

  • Zack says:

Cale gundy said when they measured the players last week that Anderson has the least amount of body fat. May not mean a whole lot but I believe he’s gonna surprise people like perine when he gets his shot

I think you’re right, I just wonder if Bob saves him a year or throws him right into the mix.

      • Zack says:

I think it depends but I bet they RS him since the running game is likely to be used less and I bet they go with a 1-2 punch of perine then mixon (or ford/Ross) and I do think because the running backs are all good at catching then I would expect some 2 back sets

        • Sooner Ray says:

Yeah, it’s a good problem to have. Didn’t Gundy say somewhere today that there would be several different RB sets and groupings?

But, when I stepped into the house, my wife had cooked some Great Northern beans with ham. They tasted great. Took me back to my childhood. The only thing missing was the unleavened cornbread.

I washed it down with a bottle of beer, “Burning River” bottled by the Great Lake Brewing company. It’s a local brewery that’s famous in these parts. Good stuff. Exiled in Ohio knows what I’m talking about.

I think I might have another one to cap off a great day.

Nice job of keeping us in the loop on the new hires. My guess is that K came across both coaches in the Dallas Metroplex (as they both focused on this region). Curious as to whether Bob & Co make a conscious effort make inroads in Dallas again, or simply unleash these guys on national recruits.

We compete for NC every year. End of conversation!

  • Thegunnfather says:

They shouldn’t have been spoken about like that ever. You think recruits don’t read this stuff. These guys are all lifetime football people. I believe they will adapt with game. We were in picture for NC last year( our worst year in a while) and we will be nxt year. Like it or not the sec is being built on propaganda, if we don’t believe in our program and try and sell it then why should recruits buy it. Stop hating!

Ok, I was waiting for a OU announcement but I am officially elated about the Kerry Cooks hire. He is a 3-4 guy that coaches secondary and even has some experience coaching LBs in the 3-4. This is a piece of the puzzle we have been missing for the last 3 years. Not to mention he is a hell of a recruiter..
