Player Note | Michiah Quick: The ‘will he or won’t he’ switch to CB saga continues for Michiah Quick. As TFB first told you back in early February, the coaches were experimenting with Quick on the other side of the ball but ultimately left him at wide receiver. Where, by several accounts, he really started to come on during the spring.

However TFB got word that in a recent ‘players only’ 7-on-7 session, Quick was once again taking reps at corner.

TFB has since spoken with a couple different sources regarding the matter and it does sound like Quick is, once again, considering a move to cornerback. As of right now, it appears as though the intention this time is to focus on staying at corner. Although this comes with an obvious, yet necessary, caveat that fall camp is still several months away. So another switch back to receiver is certainly still a possibility.

This is something we will certainly continue to monitor throughout the summer. The team will be off until early June, at which point we’re optimistic there will be plenty of summers news to get everyone ready for fall camp and the coming season. – (Super K & Brandon)

– Kobe Boyce: If you read Monday’s Open Post, you already knew OU was expected to visit 2017 CB & Texas commit Kobe Boyce (Lake Dallas, TX) and that an offer was likely to be extended. Tuesday afternoon, Boyce tweeted confirmation of both.

Again as noted on Monday, Boyce was planning to visit OU prior to his commitment. We plan to check with Boyce to see what, if any, affect this offer has with respect to both a visit and his recruitment as a whole. – (Super K)

    First? Why, yes.

  • kt-raida says:

hmmm, why would Quick move to corner? He’s one of the few receivers who’ve seen the field.

    • ⚡️Electric Sooner⚡️ says:

      Definitely a head scratcher!

    • hOUligan says:

Guessing he has not shown as much as some of the young guns. Word was a ‘consistency’ problem/hands. Hope a move is OK w him otherwise could see him transferring. CB roster much thinner than WR.

      • Daryl says:

It could also be as simple as some guy might be banged up and he is just filling in to help out while we get healthy. OORRRRRRRRRRRR

The scarey thing about this to me is that it would seem to single more of a fear or concern about who is going to play across from JT. If that is the reason then that is really scary going into next season

        • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

We would be in a really bad situation if we are trying to convert quick bc of that reason. I don’t think it’s that. I think the WR rotation is going to be (not in order) Andrews, Westbrook, Baxter, Miller, Green, Lewis and who really cares at that point? I think he is buried and he’s trying to make the most of his situation. We really need PJ to step up and take over that second corner spot.

          • Daryl says:

I still think PJ is at least a year away. I know guys talk about the jump from year one to year two, but PJ looked 10 times as lost as Jordan did his freshman year. I still think our best option at this point is Austin and then next year we need to hope that PJ and possibly one of our freshman can step in and take over.

      • SooperDave says:

I have a feeling that Geno Lewis didn’t transfer from Penn St. to not play.

Maybe Quick will play both sides of the ball. Maybe the coaches see his talent and athleticism and just want him on the field so they are seeing what gives him the best chance.

I would like to see Micah Quick stay at WR.

    • Birddawg says:

I disagree. I think we have enough depth at WR for his move to DB.
He’s got good size and feet.
But my main concern is tackling.
I wouldn’t play him at DB unless he wants too and you would be able to see if he wants to by the way he tackles. (perine..mixon..Andrews)
This is most likely a move to get under PJ skin.
Motivate the young guy to step up with some veteran competition.

  • Sooner Ray says:

    In before Metz!

    • hOUligan says:

“Quick … get an OP up!! It’s Tuesday and Metz is in his weekly meeting!”

  • Ryan says:

Woo what a packed Open Post. Y’all have any recruiting news that isn’t on Twitter? Jacob Phillips? Curtis Dunlap? He was gonna commit the other day then nothing happened.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

I like Quicks athleticism. If he can beat Mbanasor and Austin, go for it young man.

    • hOUligan says:

Kinda my thought. Thinking the coaches saw/see something. If it truly is an issue w/ his consistency catching the ball but he has everything else, it makes sense.

    • SooperDave says:

How do you feel about Quick potentially keeping those guys on the bench while we are trying to recruit their brothers?

      • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

I don’t think it would have any impact on Austins brother, but I could possibly see it bothering Mbanasor a little.

        • hOUligan says:

Nelson Mbanasor is a DE is he not??

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

He is. I was simply getting at the fact his brother could lose out on a starting spot and may be a bit salty bc of that which then causes his brother to commit elsewhere. Austin probably never expected to start or quickly realized he was too small. Therefor I don’t think he would “bad mouth” the coaches in any way.

      • hOUligan says:

Any ‘concern’ I have about the recruitment of Jordon Austin is centered around his size at 5’11 170 when all we hear is Dakota is too small at 5’10 160. Not much difference. Could he even get on the field at OU?

      • OUBmrSnr72 says:

Does Mbanasor even have an offer?

I wouldn’t worry about it….very few kids have the ability to switch positions in 4 months at the CFB level…makes for a good off-season conversation though.

        • SooperDave says:

I had seen his name come up a few times in here, but I guess he doesn’t.

      • Soonerfandave84 says:

If they are competitive it won’t affect them

    • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Oh without a doubt. If he is better than either of them then I’ll gladly play him over those two. He’s got great size. I just don’t think we’ve really seen his full potential at WR. He thinks way too much instead of just catching and hauling ass down field. That Play against Clemson still haunts me ?. Enough dancing and get north south.

      • Soonerfandave84 says:

Yeah but that was one of many plays the whole team failed to execute

      • SooperDave says:

He may have decided that he’d rather hit than be hit at D1 level. He seemed to have alligator arms at times.

  • SooperDave says:

It’s good for recruiting and the OU brand when kids who from outside of the region are successful as Sooners. I think it can carry over to future classes, so I hope Quick gets on the field constantly. I’d like to see him stay at WR, since OU is recruiting Jordon Austin and Nelson Mbanasor, brother’s of current players. I know coaches want whats best for the team, but I also know how kids think about stuff being personal/fair.

  • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

ok TFBers, serious question. Has Mayfield been granted another year of eligibility yet? Could y’all imagine if we had him for another two seasons? Gooooood night. I guess Kendall will enjoy that perfectly seasoned beefy offensive line instead ?. A man can dream, can’t he?

    • hOUligan says:

Also dreaming of the time when kids recognize the opportunity they have to get coached up by Coach Bedenbaugh and we just reload the next 4* lineman year after year.

      • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Like when we had Loadholt and big daddy Trent on that left side? Gooooooodnessssssss lol. I miss those days. could have driven a MAC truck between those hole they were opening.

    • KJ1123 says:

I think KM will be BMs heir apparent not AK.

      • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

I’m not sold on him. I think he’s tiny (although muscular) and can’t throw in the middle of the field (mayfields issue too) and I just think Kendall will seize his opportunity. I hope I’m completely wrong about Kyler, bc he’s freakishly quick and a WINNER, but the games they played real competition he looked like a lost puppy. Granted he was a true freshman. I hope this year pays dividends with him down the road.

        • KJ1123 says:

I hear ya. Its hard to compare the games imo because Austin hasn’t played a down of college ball yet. And I just don’t count the spring game at all. This year will obviously tell alot, but I hope Austin doesn’t get any PT this year other than in blowouts because that would mean bad news for us. KM was a consensus 5 star #1 QB in the nation (ESPN) for a reason, hes got that “it”. I don’t give alot of credence to HS rankings for the most part, but if a kid is in the top 10 or 15 of all players across the board, you can bet that they’re legit. Regardless of who takes the reigns, I’m glad there isn’t a feeling of uncertainty at the QB position after BM.

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

I’m excited about the QB battle next year. I haven’t a clue who will win it, but both guys look very good. Each have their own strengths. I wonder if both will eventually wind up playing?

          • j l says:

Robison could come in and beat them both. That kid is a competitor and has the skills to match. Its a good time to be lincoln riley and sooner fans, spoils abound at the QB position.

          • M Shuster says:

You really think Riley is going to be around long enough for those battles to occur? I don’t. My bet is he is gone after next season. He is too good to hang around as OC for too much longer.

          • j l says:

Theres no doubt hes going to be one of the hottest names coming up for head coach positions. Only he knows if he is going to take one, or possibly hang around and maybe take over for bob.

If a power 5 job comes calling though, itll be hard to pass up. I could see him turning down most group of 5 jobs though.

          • Brent says:

I’m starting to get scared he takes Gundy with him as his OC when he moves on.

          • j l says:

I see gundy moving up to OC when riley takes over for stoops =)

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

I guess dude. Just go watch his games last year and it’s quite obvious he needs major time to improve.

          • KJ1123 says:

I dont think he needs major time, Spavital just sucks as a coach, Linc is 10 times better at coaching QBs.

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Well of corse LR is a better coach, he’s OUrs ?. This transfer year will be a blessing in disguise for Kyler. I hope I’m wrong about him. I want him to be a total monster for us, I just don’t see it from him tape last season.

          • John Garner says:

Exactly. KM will prosper under LR. But so will AK. Different skill sets. It may depend on which direction LR wants to take the offense.

          • Boom says:

            Bingo.

  • j l says:

Any idea if the quick change is his choice or mandated? Feels like we have good quality and depth at both positions, seems weird to have him flip flopping.

    • KJ1123 says:

Could just be that he’s better at corner than receiver.

    • LandThieve3 says:

I have a feeling Geno Lewis will be playing a lot. That said, maybe he jumped Quick on the depth chart

      • j l says:

Wonder who takes the slot role. Since dede is the smallest, i figured he would be the main slot guy.

    • Jordan Esco says:

they’re not mandating a position change for any player. it’s surely something they’ve discussed w/ him (a number of times now) and I’m sure feel is best for both sides. and they only need point to this most recent draft as evidence to how many guys his size are drafted at WR vs. at CB.

      • cush creekmont says:

EXACTLY! 6-1 WR is not impressive. A CB at that size is prized. The “if” for OU and Quick is how well he can play with limited experience. Still, if he’s not going to be in the top WR group, both sides are no worse off if he’s not a top corner.

      • j l says:

Thats true, 6′ is a good sized corner, but you’ll be pigeonholed into the slot stigma as a WR.

Hopefully they make him stick with 1 or the other, he needs to max reps

      • McKinzie says:

I seem to remember a dude by the name of Andre Woolfolk doing this and turning into a very good CB.

        • cush creekmont says:

Yep. Also CB turned into a receiver at OU by then “new” coach Stoops.

          • McKinzie says:

Yeah. Was he a freshman on the 2000 team? Seems that he played two years at CB.

    • DR LEO MARVIN says:

That would be a sweet get.

    • Sooner Ray says:

      This would be nice.

    • Dustin says:

      Bama commit. 1,000,000:1?

      • KJ1123 says:

Seems like a Bama type LB, athletic and can run, doesn’t read well…but reacts very well.

        • Dustin says:

“Doesn’t read well” Yep, sounds like a Bama guy to me LOL

        • Matt says:

KJ, how you feeling about the team at this point? You feel like they’re being overhyped or will they be a top tier team again?

          • KJ1123 says:

I like where we are at right now overall. But I really wanna see the new class come in. Expecting really good things. I’m a little concerned about leadership. Other than Baker, I’m interested to see who will step up.

          • Matt says:

yeah, great to have so many blue chips in this class and to see the next class could have even more.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

            Parker in the secondary.

      • bommer85 says:

Add a couple more zeros. It is fun to pretend we have a chance though

    • Scott says:

I really want this kid. Draper , Hines , Cowan and Gumbs as our LB class would be scary.

    • 47 Straight OU Know says:

This would be huge!! Kid looks like he would smile, even while he is ripping your head off your shoulders!!

  • Fear The Magic says:

Weren’t we just hearing how Quick was so improved at WR just a couple of months ago? By the way the coaches were talking it sounded like he was a top 3-4 receiver for us.

    • DCinAZ says:

Honestly, seems like none of Norvell’s guys just weren’t any good. Look at his list of failures:

      http://247sports.com/Coach/Jay-Norvell-172/AllTimeRecruits

      That’s a bunch of fail.

      • Collin says:

Gosh you aren’t kidding. Minus Sterling and Andrews, none of the other recruits really lived up to the hype.

        • Matt says:

Sterling, Andrews and Stills. A TON of blue chip (4 star or better) WRs came through OU in his time and only 3!!! played at that level and technically Andrews hasn’t really done anything yet he made a few plays last year but he’s not a surefire stud at this point.

          • DCinAZ says:

Andrews looks like a surefire stud to me that just hasn’t been implemented into the offense. I don’t think that’s on him. All he does is score.

        • DCinAZ says:

I don’t consider Sterling his recruit. Sterling was literally a son of the program and very close to Bob. He was going to play there no matter what.

  • @DallasSooner says:

I always thought Quick would make a great punt returner.

    • Sooner Ray says:

That was my hope when he first arrived.

    • Bob Edwards says:

The issue I keep hearing with Quick is his hands. If you have any issues with ball security you will never return punts for Bob Stoops.

Quick never consistent at receiver, but a move to corner?? Are we that depleted at CB? Kind of disturbing. How would he find any more playing time than receiver?

    • Coach JK says:

Go back and look at the number of offers he had coming out of HS, most were offers to play corner, he was an unbelievable, lockdown corner in HS.

    • CcrBoomer says:

Quick’s struggles were when TK was QB. He did fine with Baker at the helm

      • michael hammond says:

Umm, Quick caught 25 passes in 2014 and only 9 last year in 1 less played game.

        • CcrBoomer says:

injury bug kept Quick off the field

          • michael hammond says:

No, he played in every game except Akron. Check his bio on Soonersports. He basically disappeared last year had 8 drops.

          • Bob Edwards says:

9 catches and 8 drops pretty much sums up why he’s looking at CB.

        • blaster1371 says:

The fact two JUCO players got playing time from game one tells me that whole group of redshirt Freshmen and sophomore WRs had/have issues.

  • blaster1371 says:

I think the incoming freshmen WRs are going to push for playing time. I’m am speaking mostly about the two late signees (one was from the Austin area an another flipped late). Those two just strike me as ballers.

    • Zack says:

Mykel jones and farrar. Both seem to be ready physically to transition to college but I wouldn’t count on big contributions from the freshmen.

      • blaster1371 says:

I dunno. Shep moving on leaves a big vacuum for playmakers. I don’t see any one current WR producing like Shep did, therefore his stats get spread over two or three guys. I think any of those two freshmen can be as productive as Westbrook was and more so than the JUCO who wore #1 ( I’m drawing a blank). Neither of those two freshmen will be pushing all conference honors but they could very easily be 25-35 catches for a 4 TDs kind of season (each). With the number of wideouts OU runs I see Eight or so WRs getting playing time and whoever is consistent, something none of the current guys outside if Westbrook has proven to be, gets the lion’s share of playing time. We saw the passing game fall apart for Jones when Broyles went down and again for OU when Shep got hurt in 2014. Shep was just the go to guy in 2015 meaning it’s not just his production that will need to be replaced but also his plays in the clutch and making more happen on a play than should have (ex hops at Tennessee and sliding Td against Baylor ).

    • Sooner Ray says:

      Happy for him.

    • John Garner says:

Wow. I’m surprised but happy for him. I’m trying to remember, but did he even start for us? I thought Brown and Samia were the starters at OT.

      • blaster1371 says:

Starts games 2,3 and 4. Which I believe was Tennesee, West Virginia and Texass. He really struggled against Texass causing Samia to take and keep the starting RT position.

He said “there is no way out of the box” OU is looking for an exit. “OU has the best suite on the Titanic right now and they know it”

He said that “OU administration now regrets not leaving in 2011 but glad they’re not in PAC12.”

When asked about possible destination he was unequivocal, “it’s the SEC”. Apparently, the home and home with Tennessee was an “eye opener”.

He’s a credible journalist, in Norman, covering OU for 12 years. He would know about certain feelings and leanings.
