Open Post | Monday, May 9th

Notable Spring Evaluation Visits: Spring evaluations continue for anotherΒ three weeks, and the OU staff will be making second stops to see some primary targets. Here are a few of note:

Grant Delpit: The Sooners stopped to see the star 2017 safety last week. Delpit hasn’t made a trip to Norman just yet, but has told TFB he still hopes to visit at some point.

Chuck Filiaga: Lincoln Riley visited one of OU’s top 2017 targets, OT Chuck Filiaga (CA) earlier in the eval period. Filiaga tells TFB that Bill Bedenbaugh is expected to stop by this week. Filiaga currently resides in California, but will be moving to Texas later this summer.

Kobe Boyce: 2017 UT cornerback commit Kobe Boyce (TX) tells TFB he is expecting Kerry Cooks to drop by today or tomorrow. If all goes well, we expect an offer to happen. Prior to his commitment to Texas, Boyce was planning a trip to OU.

Stephan Zabie: We’ve mentioned 2017 OT/OG Stephan Zabie (Austin, TX) a lot lately and for good reason. Not only does he have tremendous upside, but it seems the Sooners are dead set on making sure he knows he is a top priority. To that point, TFB has been told the OU coaches will be visiting him yet again later this week. The timing is interesting in that TAMU was thought to be his leader, but had a little bit of a public recruiting snag last week. So it seems the Sooners want to pounce on a potential opportunity.

Ondario Robinson: 2017 DE Ondario Robinson (Hutto, TX) is a name we haven’t mentioned since last year, but he shared with TFB the OU coaches are expected to stop by this Thursday. He also mentioned that Oklahoma has visited him once before, so it would seem there is some real interest there. However, we should note that it’s pretty obvious OU is still trying to decide what direction they’d like to go on the defensive line in this 2017 class. – (Super K)

Ceedee Lamb: Former OU 2017 WR commit Ceedee Lamb confirmed with TFB that he is currently on a visit to Baylor. Our friend Kevin Barrera (Scout.com/@KBScoutBaylor) tipped us off earlier today, and Lamb confirmed the visit via text.

Lamb originally decommitted in order to look around a bit and it seems LSU, Baylor & Texas were the main schools he wanted to see. The Sooners will likely know where they stand with the talented WR once he has completed those trips. – (Super K)

Transfers: As you all know by now, it was announced late last week that RB/KR Alex Ross will transfer. However, he may not be the only one. TFB has been told there is another possible transfer being considered by an offensive player, although a final decision has yet to be made. – (Super K)

    BOOMER

  • Oscar says:

2nd transfer is probably a WR. That would be my guess because of numbers.

  • Oscar says:

Hey Metz, what do you think about conference re-alignment?

  • Sooner Ray says:

Look at what we have here….an OP!

  • Malicong says:

Let the guessing games begin on the possible transfer.
Oscar beat me too it, but it sounds like a WR.

    • ALar03 says:

Wonder if Daniel Brooks would be lookig?

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Nice call. But hopefully not. He should be back on kickoffs, perhaps punts. Another Darrin Sproles? But he is the 4th back at this point.

  • SoonerGoneEast says:

“TAMU was thought to be his leader, but had a little bit of a public recruiting snag last week.”

Haha, I like to call it stupid aggy, but I guess “public recruiting snag” works too.

  • CT2 says:

    Dallis Todd is my guess.

  • Scott says:

D Todd or J Smallwood would be my guess.

  • KJ1123 says:

Saw a few videos on Strike talking about the Buffalo Wings…hilarious.

    • Maverick says:

Seriously, lol. There’s at least 20 “articles” written about his one little soundbite on chicken wings… What a time to be alive. /s

  • Cole says:

I’m guessing Dallis Todd. Got hurt, was apparently fine and never touched the field in the spring game from what I saw.

  • SoonerinLondon says:

I’m guessing a WR. Hope it’s not Brooks, but since Brooksy just moved up the depth chart one spot, I suspect it’s not him.

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

Most likely candidates are Todd, Smallwood or Meier

    • ALar03 says:

I dont think brooks moved up at all…im pretty sure he is the 4th, I would think he is behind Anderson but the both can be utilized in different ways

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

Delpit would be a huge get. Sooners have a better chance at Okudah though

    • hOUligan says:

Love his size. He’s ‘the guy’ if OU is taking another safety this cycle to add to Barnes. If OU wanted to add another lineman, instead, I’d be ok w/ that as expecting to add Josh Proctor 4* from Owasso to SoonerSquad18 plus …

    • SoonerFan92 says:

So you would rather have Delpit over Okudah?

    • Unofficial Longhorn says:

But Okudah wants to play CB and Delpit is a S. So you honestly have the room to be going after both

  • Birddawg says:

“However, we should note that it’s pretty obvious OU is still trying to decide what direction they’d like to go on the defensive line in this 2017 class.”
What does that mean? (scheme or offers?)

  • hOUligan says:

Cannot keep up w/ the transfer talk … Humphrey is leaving, right?? And talk of Quick going to DB?? or is he leaving/left, too?? And could see Todd transferring.

    • SoonerFan92 says:

Where did you see the talk of Quick making the switch to DB? Last thing that I heard was from this site saying that it was just an experiment and he was staying at WR.

    • Cav66 says:

Humphrey is leaving. Ross is leaving. No indication that Quick might be leaving (I hope)but there is some additional offensive player apparently considering a transfer.

  • Maverick says:

Haven’t posted much lately, but how about a shout out to the Foxes of Leicester City (other kind of football, I’m a commie, I know). Leicester was at 5000-1 odds to win the PL. Yes, 5k to 1. Probably the biggest Cinderella story in sports history. It would be like Kansas winning the NC next year.

If you’ve got more space in your locker for another sports team to follow, I suggest picking a BPL team. Soccer at the highest level is really fun to watch. Diving happens, but certainly no worse than in the NBA.

    • Cav66 says:

Dang Commie:) Never got into watching soccer (for the normal American guy reasons), but I’m sure it could be enjoyable once you learned a little about it and got into the teams.

      • Maverick says:

It’s strange to me how it’s not more popular here. Almost every kid grows up playing it. Probably due to a lack of pro popularity.

        • ZW_in_Austin says:

I have played forever – I still play in the adult “relive your glory days” league. Watching it has become much less favorable to me the more I see guys grabbing their ankles, flailing to the ground, and then sprinting off after they get a whistle. That, and everyone here tries to be like the Europeans instead of adopting our own style.

          • hOUligan says:

Nailed it for me. Tried to watch but the flopping and being awarded a free kick which won the game turned me off completely.

          • hOUligan says:

          • Maverick says:

I think our style at the WC was “let’s see how many saves Tim Howard can make and try score scrappy goals”.

Our youth system needs improvement but it’s getting better.

        • Cav66 says:

          5. Played it when I was a kid, but was always more drawn to football, basketball, and baseball (mostly because those sports had all the American sports heroes).
          6. Will probably continue to gain popularity, but will most likely never have the almost universal U.S. popularity of football, baseball, & basketball.

          • hOUligan says:

Yep. American football, baseball and basketball … born in the USA.

          • Maverick says:

I hope you’re using American made equipment to type that statement! Oh wait… No such thing. Nevermind. Carry on.

Mostly joking and having some fun with the sport (and fans). I’m sure there is a lot to recommend it and some great athletic moments, and artful battery, to enjoy. Just not on my current list of favorites.

          • Maverick says:

Lol, fair enough. And for the record the metric system makes way more sense.

          • Cav66 says:

True enough. Logic and good sense really have no place in most of my commentary or attempts at humor.

        • Jed says:

it is partially the flopping…but to me that’s more indicative of the ‘latinization’ of the sport. My favorite era was BPL in the mid 80’s to mid 90’s. When you had the so-called ‘hard men’ running things.
Not that I’d condone such things, but watching Eric Cantona go into a taunting fan’s face with his cleats was deeply satisfying.
Nowadays it’s more the pretty boy crap made popular by Beckham and the Italians. You’re never really sure whether winning the game or getting on a cologne ad (that never mentions cologne but features a Mapplethorpe type b/w photo of the player, mostly nude – shaved chest, but of course) is of higher priority.
As to our American style of play? We should be able to meld Brazil and Holland (circa 1990) and do just fine, thank you.
(twenty years where I could get no football on tv….but had BPL on like a fire hose in every bar…well, one does what one must.)

          • Maverick says:

You’re not wrong, but I do love me some intricate passing moves. (Arsenal supporter)

When I started watching all the time the flopping is a lot less than I had thought. Chris Paul would lead the BPL in flops. You get yellow cards for it now days.

There are still some big time collisions and people getting kicked, but not near like it was. Those type of players aren’t food enough on the ball or fast enough to keep up with today’s attackers.

        • Birddawg says:

          Give it time.
We need the MLS to keep expanding. Make more $$$.
USA mens needs to keep progressing.. A win in the WC Quarterfinals will go a long way.
NFL with its CTE issue is only going to get worse and worse as more players will discover to have that issue. Players will begin to retire early. (30).
Sports like Basketball/Baseball will become options for youngsters. and so will Soccer. You can play soccer until your 38-40 and be in really good health.
There is a lot of $$ in soccer overseas. But if the MLS is able to keep expanding a lot of those HS athletes will start seeing the benefits of a long career in soccer over the physical games in order to be a millionaire.
Like baseball, Soccer usually has a farm team. Upwards of 60-70 players on their payroll.

          • Maverick says:

Agreed about the CTE issue. Would love to see the MLS become relevant. They need to consider changing the league schedule to more closely match Europe’s though.

      • Maverick says:

        • Unofficial Longhorn says:

Yeah, it’s too difficult to find a credible source these days.

    • Malicong says:

Always been a Liverpool fan myself. Most everyone I know that follows the BPL is Man U or Arsenal. I wanted a team that didn’t follow the mold and I was a big Michael Owen fan in college.
My daughter surprised me Saturday morning asking for a Barca #8 (Iniesta) kit for her birthday. BPL is great and my first choice but they are falling behind La Liga with the current generation it appears.

      • Maverick says:

No doubt. La Liga has the big names. BPL is much deeper, but if you’re a top player, La Liga is the place to be it seems.

I have a few friends who support Liverpool. Klopp is going to be awesome for you guys. Wanted him as an eventual replacement for Wenger.

    • DrewChubbs says:

watching soccer is like watching paint dry to me. they need to allow tackling or something.

  • j l says:

Todd or meier. Meier will never play ahead of flowers, and isnt really the right fit since we moved away from the read option. Todd is just buried, and tall WR are a premium, someone would snag him in a heartbeat.

  • Stephen Dale says:

anybody have a guess as to why OU continues to recuit CB’s ? already have three on the commit list……are the coaches wanting to add more in case of a decommitment or two ?

    • Stephen says:

Depth will be an issue after next year.

      • Stephen says:

Basically they have the 3 they want. The talent level in 2017 is way higher than it was years ago and Oklahoma is in a spot where they can finally get some of the top guys. They’re not going to pass up the opportunity.

    • DCinAZ says:

Jordan Thomas probably declares for the draft after this year and Dakota is a Senior so there you have it.

    • Daryl says:

Do they consider all of the CB or is one a S? Also I agree with DCinAZ we will need the numbers for next year.

    • Cav66 says:

My best guess. A couple of these guys are just at a level where you try to make room for them if you can, and we are having a lot of success recruiting DBs this year.

    • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Apparently the board of regents is more to blame than Boren for doing whatever Texas wants with the conference.
    http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/15493767/oklahoma-sooners-regents-chairman-opposes-big-12-expansion

    • Boom says:

Board of Regents – They don’t want to expand because the current teams that have been mentioned don’t add anything. They don’t understand why we/OU will have to build them up. Has nothing to do with UT.

      • SoonerinLondon says:

I don’t understand why we/OU have to build them up either.

      • Walter Sobcek says:

There are some nice upsides for several of the potential teams. Expansion is for the long-term future, not the next three seasons. Memphis and Cincy open up recruiting in sec and Big 10 country, and BYU gives the conference a nationwide following.

      • Ura Hogg says:

If there’s no reason to expand with the pitiful choices available, I get that. But, are they are satisfied with the status quo? The Big 12 is turning into a dumpster fire. Texas set the fire with the LHN. Is the board of regents OK with that? It seems the thinking is, “well at least we made it to the CFP last year, therefore the current Big 12 must not be so bad.”
What are the options being pursued if you take expansion off the table?
Or are they content with ‘going down with the ship?’

There’s a lot to your statement. When you’re on top, everyone is getting up to give you their best game. When you’re the underdog, they’re kinda “meh”.

    • Jeremy Phillips says:

He didn’t like me pointing out certain facts.. Like being in 4 title games, 1 final four & 9 conference titles, oh & he just so happens to be the winningest coach in Sooner history too… I conceded the fact Saban & Urban are better.. But to insinuate Bob is a loser is ridiculous..

    • Bob Edwards says:

First the closer you are to the top, the more likely any motion will be down. In fact, if you are #1 there is no where else to go but down.

Second, funny how the media always blames the coach and the team for being “overrated.” Shouldn’t we blame the media since they are the one that keep overrating him. If he keeps under-performing his ratings then isn’t that the media’s fault for ranking him so high every year.

    • paganpink says:

Last year we were ranked outside the top ten preseason and reached the final four. It goes both ways because not only does no one know the future- the bias of those who do the rankings make them even worse on accuracy then random chance would dictate!

      Suck on those facts Richie…….

Ceedee is visiting Waco, on purpose. SMH Guess there must be good reasons a young man would want to go to Baylor even with their recent unsavory exposure, but what?

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Funny that he would look at Texas (when was the last time they threw a TD pass?) and passing challenged LSU? Baylor okay they throw the ball around. Seems to me that he wants more coeds and a social life…that perhaps Norman doesn’t offer.

      • paganpink says:

Walk past Walker tower tomorrow afternoon and there should be dozens of those missing coeds out there sun bathing, and unless EVERYTHING has changed some of them are absolute knockouts!

Same reason kids wanted to come to OU even after all the bad stuff that happened during Barry’s tenure. That isn’t enough to sway kids.

  • Stephen says:

Most entertaining thing I’ve seen today is Houston fans debating if they should offer Oklahoma and Texas into the AAC. Houston becomes semi relevant and they think they can talk down to powerhouse programs like Oklahoma and Texas.

    • Walter Sobcek says:

We’ll just have ot show them the error of their ways in September. I want to run the ball 50 times for 300+ plus yards. Grind them into the dirt.

      • Stephen says:

I think that’s the way to go. Trying to put on an air show in your first game of the season against a hungry opponent could turn messy. Houston can’t matchup physically against Perine, Mixon, and Anderson for very long.

  • luvsoonersA53 says:

I can’t believe a few people are concerned about OU being rated #1 at the beginning of the season. I have been a sooner fan since 1965. Never in my life time have I ever seen a season where OU did not have a target on their back when rated in the Top 25. Being the target is OU, kicking your a$$ has always been our business. It’s always been an OU tradition to leave the other team broken not beaten. BOOMER!!!!! On a mission getting back to tradition.
