Open Post | Monday, Aug. 10th (UPDATE 1:59 pm)

Amani Bledsoe: It would appear OU is going to have a big time 2016 defensive line prospect, Amani Bledsoe (Lawrence, KS), on campus today:

Pernell Jefferson: I spoke with 2016 LB Pernell Jefferson (New Orleans, LA) over the weekend, who let me know he is hoping to announce his decision some time this week. However, he said that he’d like to first consult with his head coach which he plans to do today.

Right now the Sooners seem to be in a very good spot for him, so if he is given the green light to announce it could end up being another good week for Oklahoma. – (Brandon)

Camron Williams: As we expected, OU made the cut last Friday on 2016 WR Camron Williams’ (Dallas, TX) Top 7 list. The list included: OU, OSU, Texas Tech, Kansas State, SMU, Kansas and TCU. I caught up with Williams following the announcement, who spoke very highly of both OU and wide receiver coach Dennis Simmons.

Williams said, “I’ve created a bit of a connection to coach Simmons and I really love the direction they have the offense headed.”  Williams continued by stating that he will be taking an official to OU this fall, but hasn’t set a date just yet. He also said he will be trying to get up for a couple of games on unofficial visits. – (Brandon)

Ed Oliver: Heard some very interesting news this past weekend. I was told that big time 2016 defensive lineman and Houston commit Ed Oliver (Houston, TX) is working on setting up an official to OU.

No date has been set as of yet, but apparently Diron Reynolds and the OU staff as a whole have been heavily recruiting Oliver. – (Brandon)

Jaymest Williams: This past Friday I caught up with one of OU’s top defensive back prospects for the 2017 class, Jaymest Williams (Lawrenceville, GA). Williams holds numerous offers and seems to be open to just about everyone, but as I continued to speak with him the one thing I came away with is his fondness for Kerry Cooks. With OU’s sudden surge in the recruiting game, that probably doesn’t come as a huge surprise. Cooks is at a point now in the 2016 class where he may have to turn away prospects.

Williams enthusiastically said,“ Coach Cooks! That’s my man right there!” There’s also a connection with OU and Williams’ family. His dad played at Del City and was teammates with former Sooners Benny Butler and Mike Woods. Williams says that he plans on trying to get up to OU this season and, here’s the kicker, bring his teammate EJ Price with him. That’s big news since Price is considered one of the top OL in the 2016 class. – (Brandon)

– UPDATE (9:22 am): Sooners make Top 10 cut for one of the top 2016 athletes in the country.

– UPDATE (9:25 am):

– UPDATE (12:16 pm): As we mentioned above regarding an upcoming announcement from Pernell Jefferson, Brandon has been exchanging messages with the 2016 OU linebacker target who shared that (1) he has now spoken with his coach and (2) he is planning to announce his commitment today.

In terms of OU’s chances with regards to said announcement…..#JustWaitOnIt

Ed Oliver would be a great get for this class. Hope we can pull him out of his hometown.

  • Bob Edwards says:

The “My Top 10” thing is so full of meh.

    • Sooner 4Ever says:

Full of meh, with a side of ‘so what’ and covered with little ‘that’s nice’ sprinkles.

Granted, it’s better to be on the list than out for our most wanted recruits… but these guys releasing top 10, top 18, etc., is such a water sandwich. Let me know when you narrow to a top 5 and line up visits, or a top 3 and you’re nearing a decision.

      • Bob Edwards says:

Yeah, I worked for a company that was always in someones top five when they were deciding on a product. We went out of business, because we didn’t make enough number ones.

        • Jed says:

Heh, yes. I worked in semiconductor automation for a while. Three companies were doing the overhead transport systems. It was hilarious to listen to guys try to defend themselves by saying they had ‘made the customer’s ‘top three”.

      • Mr. Jones says:

Your last sentence = my thoughts exactly.

      • Fear The Magic says:

I completely agree. Maybe these recruits that have “narrowed it down” to a top 25 should just start sending roses to those that are still in the hunt.

    • Indy_sooner says:

I agree. But when you put yourselves in their shoes, some of these cats have 20+ offers, so I also see their information overloads.
Still, I can identify with a list of 5 over the top 10, even top 15 lists

      • Bob Edwards says:

I don’t have a problem of them narrowing it to a top ten as part of their process. But why do you have to tell anyone about it other than the coaches who are recruiting you?

      • SoonerGoneEast says:

They might be trying to eliminate some of the traffic on their twitter feed too. I’m sure they’re getting pressured day and night by the various fanbases..

  • BigJoeBrown says:

Crazy to think that OU may have to start turning guy’s down now.

  • SoonerfanTU says:

Kind of strange to think that guys the age of Benny Butler and Mike Woods would have kids old enough to be recruited. Doesn’t seem like THAT long ago they were at OU themselves.

  • Randy says:

I would still like to have Daniels, Southall and Bledsoe. If we could or would take those 3 plus Oliver I would be fine with that too. I just like the versility of the first 3.

  • Mr. Jones says:

Are the coaches counting Jon Michael Terry as a DE or LB? If LB, a Jefferson commitment would shut the door on everyone not named Caleb Kelly, right?

    • Jordan Esco says:

      LB

    • Randy says:

Terry and Kelly would be ILB, and Youngquist and Jefferson would be outside. I would still like them to offer Teton Saltes as a OLB tho.

      • Sooner 76 says:

Interesting. I see Youngquist as a WILL and Terry as an OLBer. I agree about Kelly and Jefferson.

        • Randy says:

Maybe. Just Youngquist seems like more of pass rusher I could be wrong I thought Bolton was a outside guy but seems like he doing good inside. I just really like JMTs feet and instincts inside especially with someone like Kelly.

          • Sooner 76 says:

It’s often hard to tell isn’t it?

          • Randy says:

Yeah.. You want that “thump” in the middle but don’t want to sacrifice sideline to sideline ability for a ILB. And you want that speed and quickness in a OLB but can’t give up the edge on runs. I would take as many Jordan Evans (Caleb Kelly) and Geno Grissoms (Austin Roberts, Teton Saltes) as I could.

          • Randy says:

Oh but I do like Tay Evans as well him being able to Redshirt was great.. Love his ability in the middle.

      • Mr. Jones says:

Some sites have Terry listed as a DE. That would be great cause then we could take Kelly and another LB (Saltes, Marvin Terry ect.).

    • hOUligan says:

and I would be just fine with that. BY, Kelly and Jefferson are all at the top of ‘my wish list’ for LBs. Saltes would be the sprinkles on top but would almost as soon see them take another DB with the excellent ones still on the board for this defense.

    • William Ryan says:

He will play the jack/stand up spot with the move to a more nickel base defence your lbs has to have the speed and quickness to play in space and cover the field sideline to sideline.

  • Sooner 4Ever says:

  • Daryl says:

I would say that Hardman is leaning to the SEC. We need to win that Vols game big time!

  • BoomerDave says:

Intrigued by the Ed Oliver news. I said to myself at the time that I didn’t see this whole “stay in Houston” thing lasting until signing day. To me, big time players want to play on the big stage. One defection, and the whole thing blows up IMO.

    • BoomerDave says:

Awesome how involved the commits are in recruiting the rest of the class.

      • pitbull17 says:

Absolutely, it shows how much these kids want to win. If they were just in it for themselves they wouldn’t be doing any of this.

      • Rick says:

The players seem to really enjoy the feed back on Twitter, (social media, etc.) some really prod it on. It does really provide a platform for the recruits to become recruiters ie Sylvie, Kendall, Youngquist become primary recruiters themselves. I think for a young recruit looking at the recentlly committed recruits being excited enough to extend welcome mats, becomes a powerful tool to gain commitments.

    • SamSooner says:

He’s back? Wow! I can’t wait for him to get to OU.

The past three recruiting classes have been great. We are getting some great DL and OL and now the LBs and Safeties getting on board. OU is going to be salty real soon.

    • Mr. Jones says:

Has Bledsoe said when he plans to commit somewhere?

  • BoomerDave says:

Anyone? Haven’t been hearing much about Calvin Bundage, the state’s top prospect. Are we recruiting him as a Safety or a LB? I’ve heard both. Either way, those positions are filling up fast. His time to commit may be running out.

  • Dustin says:

A b/r video for your top 10? LOL

  • Ryan says:

KU 247 insider gave a crystal ball for Bledsoe to OU this morning. And he is visiting today. Wasn’t it Esco who said we had little chance with Bledsoe?

  • Randy says:

How many RBs will we take this year, I would think we need 2 ?

    • Jonathan Taylor says:

Looking like they are all in on just one as of right now.

      • Randy says:

I know, and that scares me. Even if he does commit. Still think we need one more, maybe take a chance on a local kid or just a prospect that would fit this offense well.

    • Bob Edwards says:

We currently have no Sr RB’s and the the two Jr’s aren’t going to leave early unless they graduate and transfer. So you are really just replacing Ford’s scholarship. We are loaded with talent so you can’t sell early playing time very well. We are taking a small class because of scholarship limitations. I wouldn’t think we would bring in more than one scholarship RB. We might, like Zack says, take a couple of local preferred walk-ons, but I don’t see us taking more than one scholly guy unless someone leaves.

      • Randy says:

The problem is I don’t won’t to wait until they are SR if they are draft eligible I would replace them. Still a year away but always one injury away for depth problems it seems. Maybe I just worry too much too.. Lol

        • Bob Edwards says:

That can be said about every position. We have 85 scholarships divided between eleven offensive, eleven defensive, and a couple of special teams slots. That leaves less than four scholarships per slot. So everyone you give in one position you take away in another position. The spread runs a mix of single and two back sets meaning RB’s occupy about 1 1/2 slots. That is six schollys. That’s what we have allocated right now. (five RB’s plus a FB). So what position do you take the scholly away from to fill another RB slot? Right now we have so much quality depth at RB that we will have a problem getting everyone enough snaps. Does not seem the right place to squeeze out a scholly from somewhere else.

          • Randy says:

I get it.. All spots available with priority but just don’t like not having a guy back there and I mean 2yrs from now. Ofc if we get Whaley that changes some.

          • Bob Edwards says:

Oh, I think we take Whaley. Just don’t think we give two schollys given our current situation.

        • Zack says:

Running back is one of the easiest positions to fill with a quality guy. Look at how many young running backs have success.

        • Sooner 76 says:

The general rule of thumb is that you recruit by position to replace your juniors. It’s a rough rule of thumb, as you can have a huge disparity b/t juniors and seniors at a position.

    • soonerthunder says:

one, imo, Whaley. I want to load up on DBs. I’d love to get 3 safeties and 3 CBs. Of course, along with Kelly, Thompson being one of the safeties and some other positions too. Not not wanting those too, but if we get Whaley that’s all I want at RB. I want the other ‘ships going elsewhere.

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

Is there any buzz around Tyrie Cleveland? Can someone explain the whole green light to be able to commit?

    • Randy says:

Should be, I think he could be the biggest difference in this entire class offense or defense. He is or could be such a game changer. Like Julio Jones was for Bama, Dez is for Okie State. A face or identity of a program especially on offense but not limited to that side of the ball.

      • Mr. Jones says:

I would say Oliver if they somehow made that happen. But Cleveland definitely looks like a game changer.

        • Randy says:

I like Gallimore as a young guy. But we probably won’t see him for a couple more years really entrenched in the defense. Same would be for Oliver. Cleveland would be a instant impact kid day one. Imo

          • Mr. Jones says:

I think Gallimore will have an impact next year. If Oliver is really a top ten player, he’ll play as a freshman. Hopefully we get both and we’re both right!

  • SoonerfanTU says:

Am I the only one that thinks the TCU offense may come back to earth a bit this year? College football history is chalked full of teams that had outstanding seasons (overall, offensively, or defensively) only to return most of those players yet still take a step backwards. They kind of flew under the radar some last year, and had the new offensive system. This year they will wear the bulls eye from day 1, and opposing teams will have a seasons’ worth of tape to study the offense. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Boykin be a little less effective this season.

Or maybe not. They may go out and be even better. I just know it wouldn’t be the first time a team didn’t live up to expectations.

    • BoomerDave says:

I agree. I see TCU being no better than 3-4 in Big XII this season. I look for Baylor to be the cream of the crop.

      • Kelly Gurbcock says:

even though Baylor returns more on D TCU has a proven QB whereas Baylor does not. I think TCU is in better position.

        • Slim Sooner says:

I don’t care a bit which one is better. I hope they both lose every conference game but one and have no shot at Big 12 Champ or NC playoff. I hope we win every game we play and take back our rightful place in this conference and in national ranks. Let Baylor and TCU go back to the bottom where they belong and both lose to Kansas and Iowa State this year. To me it’s bizarro to even be discussing which one is better. ( I’m old and can claim all sorts of mental incapacities.)

        • Scott Moore says:

Only problem with that theory is for one, Baylor reloads on QB better than just about anybody. I mean, they’ve had basically no set back in that position since RGIII. Plus, this kid started early in the year in 2014, be it against a cupcake, when Petty was dinged up. He through for 438 yards and 5 TD’s. Ran for another. So I think Baylor will unfortunately reload once again at QB. Another system QB. Much like Leach did at Tech.

      • SoonerGoneEast says:

If the game against Baylor was at OU this year, we would argue. We might still!

    • Mysterio1 says:

Does make a little sense, nobody saw that offensive explosion coming last year.
DC’s will make adjustments to slow that Boykin kid down.

    • pitbull17 says:

I could easily see that happening. It really wouldn’t suprise me either way. As long as OU beats em I really don’t care what else they do.

    • Lane Gilstrap says:

I think he gets his top 3 recievers back

    • soonerthunder says:

You are not the only one. I believe he will take a step backwards this year. They had a lot go their way last year that I don’t expect to go their way this year. Baylor, yes, I think they have proven they are consistently good, but I’m not sold on TCU. I never care what the media says. They look at last year, as you pointed out, and jump on bandwagons. If you go back the last 3-5 years, it usually who they pick 6-8 in the B12 who finish first. I’m in agreement with you on TCU.

    • JB says:

I think Baylor’s going to take a step back this year.

    • Bob Edwards says:

The Big-12 right now is kind of like a house full of teenagers when the parents are gone. At some point the parents (OU, UT) are going to show back up and there is going to be hell to pay. We will see if it is this year. I think dad (OU) may be home soon. Mom may be a while.

  • Jesse says:

So I know Kelly and Whaley are top priorities for 16 but are there any other recruits that the coaches just absolutely want? Obviously I know if they offer they want a player, talking more like priority recruits.

Kish is the man now! Right?

      • JB says:

He’s doing a lot to silence his critics right now. After reading he was hired to recruit the west coast and seeing very little to no return on investment initially, I was ready to dump him. Seeing Youngquist, Terry and now Jefferson commit, and if Kelly joins that list, it would be hard to argue that he’s not doing a good job of recruiting. Throw in DeBerry & McGinnis from last year, Kish is coming on lime gangbusters. I have been one pf his most vocal critics and I wanted to get rid of him but he’s making me eat my words right now. I bow down to you, coach Kish. Excellent job, sir.

I don’t want to say Jefferson is a lock but…he’s a OU lock. 2 weeks ago he said he didn’t have a list but that OU will be there at the end.

        Projected off momentum =)

        • Soonerfandave84 says:

I think it’s OU too, since Sylvie is recruiting him now and think he even mentioned something about “another from the boot”

          • j l says:

Im sure hoping so. Sylvie has been a godsend, so glad to have him on board.

          • Soonerfandave84 says:

Yeah, it would be awesome if OU got two Booms today(Bledsoe too)

          • Zack says:

Like I said just like Sunderland last year. But I like sylvie’s recruiting more because he’s not from OK so it seems different when he’s trying to get involved in recruiting opposed to sunderland when Norman was in his backyard.

  • Zack says:

Should we be on boom watch with Bledsoe? Seems like the defense is giving us a boost with the 3 recent commits and potential 4th all being defensive guys.

  • Tipman says:

So with Terry, Youngquist and soon to be Jefferson – is the last LB spot being held for Kelly? Also, aren’t all the above Outside LBs?

  • Randy says:

I love the talent we are getting at LB. and I love Striker and the current LBs. But I would like to see MStoops (as OLB coach) recruit more length. Just in the last couple of years we were in on Keisean Lucier South, Cassius Peat, Daishon Neal longer OLB / standup DEs. We have a place for it Grissom will make a NFL career out of the move. I would like to see MStoops take a chance on a Teton Saltes, Romeo McNight or another similar prospect.. With today’s offenses that length on the outside could make a big difference.

  • JR says:

What is the outlook for recruiting the Center position? Currently, I see for next season OU has Dalton and that is it. Alvarez could slide over but he is being looked at for Guard. Roberson is also a Guard and I am pretty sure Hearne, Ford and Paul cannot play Guard.

  • Stephen says:

So Cody Thomas has done away with the awkwardly-shaped Eli Manning helmet. There’s my practice news. (Refresh for pic)

Nap time. Wake me up if there’s a Boom. I’m just waitin’ on it.

What does the Jefferson commitment say about our chances with Caleb Kelly? How many OLBs are we taking?

    • Jesse says:

If Kelly wants to be a sooner he’ll be a sooner. Doesn’t matter how many LBs we pick up haha.

    • Jason Vos says:

Why do people keep asking this question? Does not matter how many LB’s that commit 5 or 100. They will still have room for Kelly

      • Zack says:

Can we pin a Caleb kelly story to the top? It’s almost like saying “would OU still take Adrian Peterson if so and so commits?”

  • Jordan Esco says:

Had said just last week that he would be in Norman the weekend of the WVU game. So much for that.

As long as we get Cam Williams. That’s the guy I want

      • Stephen says:

Reminds me too much of Adron Tennell or Dejuan Miller. Just really rigid. I think he would be an intriguing TE though if they’re looking for a next up for Andrews.

        • Steve Cooke says:

          Adron “hands of stone” Tennell?

          • Stephen says:

Hopefully he has softer hands lol. But his routes in his film present more of a TE feel to me, not a possession WR. Tennell…just never developed routes or muscle or playtime.

    • Randy says:

Good, I want and we need Cleveland and Duvernay.

  • Carl Carter says:

Do you guys think all of these linebacker commits (saying Parnell commits) would push away Caleb Kelly?

  • Troyce Lewis says:

Marvin Terry or Pernell Jefferson who would you take if we had one scholly left?

    • Mr. Jones says:

This is a question I have as well. I’ve watched both player’s film and can’t say I necessarily prefer one to the other. Curious what others think though.

      • Troyce Lewis says:

Well we just got Jefferson so I guess it doesn’t really matter, I still would like to hear more opinions though

          • Sooner 76 says:

76 is the year of my terminal degree from OU. I played in the late 60s early 70s. Had a class with Lee Roy among others. I also played intramurals for 2 summers in Europe as an exchange student and really learned the game there.

          • DrewChubbs says:

That’s really awesome. I didnt know they were playing soccer that early at the school. I, too, got to play some in Europe, though I was only playing in an international tournament during a two week span in the summer of 94. Best time of my life, in regards to playing. I went over with Brian Harvey, who was running my club team at the time.

At any rate, glad to run into another OU futballer on here!

  • Exiled In Ohio says:

“probably doesn’t come as a huge surprise. Cooks is at a point now in the 2016 class where he may have to turn away prospects”

I’m thinking he probably already has been shutting it down since the Cobb commitment, trying to hold slots for the Cali Trio at the WVU game..

This class is turning into a great one!!!.seems like the whole staff is doing a great job!!

  • SoonerGray says:

That is really terrible to read the news about Kenyon…..I can recall a recent report talking about his potential to be one of the best OTs to come through the program in years. The coaches fought so hard to get his sig and now it looks like he’s flushing it all…hopefully he fights back and returns to the team

    • JB says:

Yeah, I thought he’d play a lot of minutes if not ultimately start. It’s a big loss. I have no idea what it’s for but indefinite suspensions tend to be serious. I hope he is a character guy who works through whatever it is and he sticks it out. I hate to hear stuff like this. This is why I hate training camp…injuries & suspensions. Let’s get the season started!

Any word on how bledsoe’s visit went?

  • Brien Brown says:

So to add my two cents worth which about what it’s worth people have been asking about numbers and the kids we can bring in this what I came up with right after 2015 recruiting ended and we went straight into 2016, my numbers may be a little off. Reading on here and other sites this what I came up with we needed 1 possibly 2 QB’s, 1 or none RB’s going all in it seems with Whaley, not taking any FB/TE type players, 2-3 WR’s and 3-4 O-Line, 2-3 D-Line players and 4-5 LB’s, and 3-4 DB’s and no special team types. So with that in account we take 16 guys at the least and 22 at the most. Before Ford, Hansen and the Wood situations I figured we had 19 spots open so with those 3 guys now not on the roster give us the 22 spots. I don’t know that we fill those all up. But, feel Caleb Kelly and Whaley are guys we most def want, keep in mind that Terry is a big bodied kid also and they could move him to DE if need be. I think OU will be fine and will get the kids they want and again, there will always be room for the kids they want, seen on here they will make room for certain kids. Hope this helped some and glad we got another BOOM!!! Love me some #OUDNA #BOOMER #IsTheSeasonStartedYet

  • Bob Edwards says:

So reading the running back preview on soonersports. We have a #1 RB(Mixon), #2 RB (Anderson) and #3 RB (Ross). Plus we have Samaje Perine to back them up.

    • EasTex says:

Hopefully our back up will get some carries in trash time.
      /s

    • Rick says:

All kidding aside, this group of RB’s might be NFL talent about 3-4 deep. Anderson is getting rave reviews. We have heard what Mixon is doing in practice and Perine might be the best “back up” in history.

      • JB says:

We are stacked at RB. Imagine the even greater depth had Ford stuck around. It is an embarrassment of riches. That’s what I like to see.

      • Zack says:

I bet Anderson plays a little this year. No reason to rs a running back these days. But Ross and brooks are good enough to see quite a bit of time as well.

  • KJ1123 says:

No visit from Thompson. Running out of spots?

    • Zack says:

That’s interesting. I wonder if eboh will commit soon. I thought for sure Parker and Thompson were both takes regardless of the 2 corners and 2 safeties were looking to add in 2016.

      • KJ1123 says:

Has to be a numbers issue. Thats a tough call
…..wish we could take em all.

        • Jesse says:

My first thought was maybe a possibility that a different corner/safety was about to commit and that first come first serve thing kind of came into effect eboh maybe? Not sure just random thought, trying to stay positive about it haha.

    • Mr. Jones says:

Maybe they feel really good about Burton and are holding out for him.
