– John Humphrey: Earlier this week OU 2015 WR target John Humphrey released his Top 5 which included: Oklahoma, Texas, Notre Dame, Baylor and Ole Miss. It seemed, at one point, that a decision might be coming later this month, but Humphrey has now pushed his commitment date back significantly. He will also be at the Texas invite only camp event this Friday. He has told us that he’ll be visiting Oklahoma for a second time on August 2nd. We asked if he’s still ‘liking OU’, and he responded by saying “Liking? I’m loving OU!”
That’s all good and well, but with OU looking to only take one (possibly two for the right guys) WR’s then you’re probably wondering the same thing we are…will there be a spot available for Humphrey if he waits until after the season? Or will Oklahoma wait for Humphrey? And could that cost OU a chance at some other players?
So we asked Humphrey if he was worried about OU possibly filling up by the time he is ready to make a decision. He responded by saying, “We (OU coaches and Humphrey) already talked about the situation. It’s all good.”
– Kenneth Mann: Also earlier this week Oklahoma made a new 2015 DE offer to Kenneth Mann out of Burleson, TX. The day of the offer we had a chance to speak to Mann, and he confirmed that his coach will be bringing him up on a visit next week.
Mann holds a number of offers and has said he wants to visit a number of schools, but we get the sense that proximity may end being a factor. Mann is a long, athletic DE prospect. He uses his hands so well at times, it gave us a feel that he’d been playing ball for a long time. And he confirmed that in telling us he’s been playing since he was four years old and primarily at DE for a large part of that time. He said that he’s grown since the season and is now up to 6’5″ 260 lbs.
– Gabriel Campbell:Β Recently caught up with Gabriel and confirmed that he still plans on taking an official visit to Oklahoma, though he hasn’t confirmed an exact date yet. With summer offers out to Kenneth Maan and Tyrell Jacobs, and the fact that OU is still recruiting Campbell and Neville Gallimore, it seems as though OU isn’t going to simply waiting around on former commit Du’Vonta Lampkin.
While OU remains a contender for Lampkin, they are obviously still heavily pursuing other DE prospects. Based on conversations with Gabriel, we feel that even though he hasn’t named his top two, OU and Mississippi State are probably his top schools.
– PJ Mbanasor: Mbanasor let us know yesterday he has confirmed the date of his official visit. He said he’ll be visiting for the Tennessee game. To state the obvious, that game is going to be huge as a number of big names have already confirmed similar plans to be in Norman that weekend.
– Joshua Little: Last night 2015 Millwood DE Joshua Little announced his commitment to Kansas State. KSU looks like a good fit for Joshua especially because, as JY mentioned (here) when we first introduced him toΒ y’all, he’s got a good frame and athleticism, but he’s going to need some development. Bill Snyder and is staff are well known for their ability to develop players.
Joshua was a guy that didn’t have a single D-I offer when we first found and wrote about him. Since then he’s picked up a number of D-I mid-major and high major offers (Purdue, Iowa State, Kansas State, Arizona State, and Washington State). When we first brought him to y’alls attention, we said “This young man is going to see his recruiting really pick up. He’s a high major D_I player on film.” (Source) And when it’s all said and done, “film don’t lie.”
Congrats to another OK Preps player that’s going to get the chance to play on a national stage and represent Oklahoma HS football.
– Ashton Preston: As most of you know, Edmond Santa Fe CB Ashton Preston recently committed to North Texas. But Ashton has also been asked to attend Texas’ invite only camp this Friday. He is a player who really is the epitome of hard work. We’ve had a chance to see this young man develop tremendously over the past year. He has developed incredible footwork and technical ability. He’s been training regularly with coach Clay Mack down in Dallas. After a recent look at some of his camp film, he really has begun to blossom.
– David Richardson: A cornerback we mentioned here (see the post) a month ago, David Richardson from Rockwall Heath, has started to pick up some interest from the Longhorns. In fact, Richardson will be also be in Austin this weekend for the Texas camp. He is a silky smooth, highly polished and fluid CB.
– Tony Jefferson and The Blind Tape Test: Former OU safety and Arizona Cardinal has agreed to take our Blind Tape Test. He is in the process of evaluating safeties: Will Sunderland, McKinley Whitfield, and Justin Reid. We’ve also asked Chris Trulove, former director of pro scouting for the Denver Broncos, to take the test as well for the same three players. We’ve already made our opinion known on all three players, but we figured y’all would enjoy hearing the opinion of some others as well. I mean those two guys just might know what they’re talking about.
– UPDATE (2:57 pm): I (Jordan) suspect K will have plenty more on this to come, but wanted to get this up quick because I know many of you will be happy about it.
#Oklahoma offers 2015 4 Star S Justin Reid (Dutchtown HS, LA) @justinreid_1 @VarsityPreps @SouthRecruit1 #BoomerSooner
— Demetric D. Warren (@DemetricDWarren) July 17, 2014
– UPDATE (5:15 pm): Just spoke to Justin Reid. He’s very excited about the OU offer. Definitely think OU has a chance here. Will have more tomorrow. Justin is one of the better safety prospects in the country. More polished than any other safety we are recruiting and has tremendous athleticism and size. So glad to see that this offer went out. Also, a correction. As most of you know we first mentioned Justin back in the spring when we said coach Bobby Jack Wright had gone by to see him. It was in fact coach Montgomery that had gone by to see him at that time. So apologies for that. Coach Montgomery is also the coach that extended the offer to him today.

Thanks for the updates. I’ll be looking forward to the blind tape tests for those 3. As I’ve been saying for a few weeks now I expect Reid and whitfield to be graded higher than Sunderland.
It’s not a popular opinion among the OU faithful but I completely agree regardless of what anyone says. Not sure how Tony and Chris will come out but it won’t change my opinion one way or another.
Are they going to be viewing film outside of what is on youtube or hudl?
K-Do you influence the evaluators on the Blind Test in any way at all. For example, asking them to take a “hard” look at so and so.
Did Whitfield leave the Arkansas St camp with an offer? My understanding is that he did not. There’s got to be a reason why nobody is offering this kid. Raw athleticism alone is not a reason to offer a kid in a time of limited ships. If we did offer Whitfield as many on here are clamoring for, who do we back off of?
BoomerDave, it’s Arkansas and he will be attending later this month. Also, he’s not “raw” as he has skills now are better than some of the HS players who have been coached for years. A lot of folks have offered and a lot more are in the pipeline. Also, coaches will take a raw athletic kid with a load of potential over a finished HS product. He’s almost 6’4 200 and he’s only going to be a Sr in HS. As far as Mike/Bob, Mike gave him the grand tour of OU and will continues to talk to him. I would bet Whitfield is offered before the Tennessee game.
As a side note, there have been a lot of players at OU that were raw talents – Tapper, Striker, Colvin, and some guy named Bradford just to name a few.
When it comes to DB’s, there are only 2 evaluators that count: Bob and Mike Stoops. Please don’t say that you put more stock in Tony J’s grading than you do the Stoops’.
I am aware that mike and bob are better evaluators. I just think they offered Sunderland early he’s a hometown-ish kind of guy and I’m not saying he isn’t good I just think Reid and whitfield are better and I wouldn’t wait around for Sunderland to decide but I would take his commitment even if we had the 3 safeties committed.
Part of that is because whitfield is an athlete and could end up playing a different position. And I think jamile Johnson could put on 20-25 pounds and play olb where he would probably have more success than he would at safety.
I don’t think that Stoops’ regret their offer to Sunderland. He was fairly recently offered by Ohio State. He holds big time offers from coaches that don’t make a lot of mistakes in evaluations. I don’t question that Whitfield may have tons of potential and back when we had 35 ships to give I’d offer him in a heartbeat. Personally, I’d back off of Johnson before Sunderland.
I agree but Johnson is committed so to me you gotta go with what you got. Now if he talks up another school I would let him visit and do whatever because I don’t think he’s as good as Reid whitfield and Sunderland.
Can’t wait to see Tony’s evals. You guys just keep upping the bar for a great site.
Gotta give the people what they want
+1

Good stuff, Jordan. Thanks for posting!
always
Ahhhhh, Open Post. Yesterday was terrible. A day without the Open Post is like a day without sunshine.
Thanx!! Awesome as ever.
Going to the LA Tech game! Last game I went to a game in Norman was in 2000, when Renaldo Works was beasting UTEP (incidentally, Sooners won the natty that year).
Let’s hope you’re good luck for us this year!
Give us all the magic you got!
you rang?
Yes, yes I did.
You and bjw do that hoodoo that you do.
PJ is becoming more and more of a fan favorite. He will be a great ambassador for OU at the Tennessee game and hope he makes it up for several more unofficials!
I am betting right now that Tony Jefferson will love Reid’s film. One hard hitting safety to the next.
Based off this post, looks like Humphreys is a silent comit, so we will probably only take 1 more receiver
Well and based on what newsome said in an interview with oui, Sunderland is probably the same.
OU hasn’t been too keen on silent commits in the past, but it’s still possible.
Good point deez. I always felt the same but that’s been changing. OU had a couple silent commits last year.
Like who if you don’t mind sharing?
Seems like Mixon and Quick were silent commits to me.
Or Parker.
I’m assuming one of them was Mixon but again I’m assuming.
Is this simply so they can keep enjoying the recruiting process, and taking “free” official visits?
I posted the same comment after you lol. Same thoughts here
Right, with DGB presumably playing next year one more should be all we’ll have room for.
I love the blind tape test! No other site can compete with you guys!
Sounds like the Humphrey kid is a silent commit. Nothing wrong with him wanting his moment, even though it would have been nice to land him well before the game.
Really like Newsome, guess we’ll find out soon enough
He may be a silent commit for now but if texas offers that’s likely to change
I agree. He seems to be an “in the moment” person. Texass will woo him, he will love what he hears and sees and then it will be OU’s turn to court him some more.
True, he could start day one there.
Wouldn’t have a QB to throw to him though.
Mayhaps, but they have a year to get that figured out and the kid from Denton might change all that.
Been kinda quiet on the DL front. Appreciate this info on Mann & Campbell as I really like both of them. However, I would really like to know where we stand with Gallimore & Jacobs too. No snub to Lampkin but we already know a lot about him.
Will Mbanasor become the commit recruiter for ’15 class like Mixon was for the’14 group.
…….1) thxs for the info on mann…….oui is considerably behind on this one ………2) what is a silent commit and what is the logic of it to the player/school
Silent commit is when a recruit wants to do the hat dance at the end of the season…think of blowing out the candles type deal on your birthday…Humphrey is playing in an AA game and some kids like to be on tv and have that moment in the spotlight
……thxs……..I don’t see how a school trusts a silent ‘commit’ if visits are still ongoing………
Coaches know they have to recruit kids until the LOI is signed regardless and a kid would have to be really mischievous to lead a coach on knowing full well he’s going somewhere else…part of the relationship building
Tony Jefferson and The Blind Tape Test: Now this is what I have been waiting for! I can’t wait for this one. Thanks guys!
A nice piece about a home town hero and NFL Hall of Fame QB.
Y.A. Tittle.
Thank god we offered Reid hopefully this means whitfield is next.
Just saw a story about a&m LEGALLY paying about 60k for an insurance policy for their OT Cedric Ogbuehi to help convince him to stay for his senior year. Apparently the policy will pay in the event that a player is injured and their draft status suffers due to the injury. It will pay the difference between what they might have received as a signing bonus prior to injury and what they actually receive. I have NO problem with this rule as I think it will definitely help keep some kids in school, which is rarely a bad thing. Just curious about when this became a rule and if the OU Athletic Department has put it to use? Any one have any info?
Never knew that was legal to do by a University. Always thought that was up to the player and family.
I guess it is a somewhat new rule that is not well known and the article made it seem like it was not utilized by schools often.
Its a nice little bonus to offer kids, but kinda unneeded. You dont have to pay upfront for a lloyds of london insurance policy, so kids can get them without having the money to pay(about 10k per million insured). Marquis lee is getting 5 million from his draft status dropping, but didnt have to pay a dime upfront to get the policy.
I think I read the SEC allows each school like 350 K per year for such things. It could include trips home for funerals, family emergencies, clothes (suit and ties for awards) and insurance policies. I’m sure Lloyds of London would want their premiums at some point and time. I probably need to read the whole article or research the new law.
You pay lloyds with your first pro contract, if its not paid upfront.
Thanks
I think that one of the issues that the NCAA must address, now that College Football is not quite the regional sport it used to be in the 90s and before, is the different rules each conference creates for themselves. College football, more than ever, is a National sport which requires a true governing agency that has clear and equal rules for all that participate. The conferences are in direct competition with one another for revenue and talent and it lends itself to so much corruption, simply allowing each league the freedom to dictate many of their own rules and regulations. It is obvious that sweeping changes are coming to College football in the not too distant future, hopefully this is something that will be addressed.
Good news about Reid. Hopefully no more waiting around for Whitfield offer.
Not to rain on the Reid parade, but it’s important to keep in mind what’s good here (i.e. the offer) could mean something not as good w/ another possible target.
ie. haughton or jamile?
or Sunderland?
Honestly I think were in good shape with him. According to an interview on oui with newsome he hinted to Sunderland being quite the ou lean.
I bet Arky would say the same, though…
Told you you the other day buddy…Sunderland will be a Sooner…take our word for it π
No way we take 4 safties this year? Does it look like McQuinnie is going to get here?
I forgot he was in limbo kinda. I think we would take 3 safeties and whitfield as an athlete if that’s what it took. But if Johnson or haughton doesn’t make it here then it’s kind of irrelevant anyway. It’s a long time until February.
As long as we get the best available, doesn’t bother me if someone gets left out for slow playing the process. Get on or get gone.
Which makes me think Haughton
It would really sux to lose Haughton, he is by far my fav safety recruit this year
Being relatively new hear I have to ask if you guys could go a little more in depth on what all goes into the blind tape test. I mean, I can pretty much assume what it is/will be but was hoping you could possibly shed a little more insight into the process. Thanks as always and keep up the stellar work boys!
Here is the most recent which provides an explanation as to what is involved.
https://thefootballbrainiacs.com/ou-oklahoma-sooners-football-recruiting-2015-chris-trulove-ryan-newsome-james-proche-john-humphrey
The short version is we’ll have a former player and/or former NFL dir. of scouting watch film on a couple guys and offer their thoughts. They don’t have any knowledge of the players’ ranking, # of stars, offers, etc. It’s just pure tape and what they see.
That’s what I thought but now I know for sure. Great idea. You eliminate any chance of bias this way and get a TRUE eval. Thanks man.
Holy wowzers, just looked at Justin Reid’s Rivals page, he has a 4.7 GPA and an ACT score of 28!!
He has offers from Brown, Harvard, Princeton, and Yale. Sounds like he doesn’t even need football.
Very intelligent kid!
As far as the Justin Reid thing goes, it’s about damn time!
Yes.
Now Whitfield, PLEASE!
Still hoping for a Whitfield offer
Lets go tony!! Only my fav Sooner writing for my favorite Sooner news coverage, can it get any better?
You spoke to Eric Reid or Justin? Is his brother helping him in recruiting?
Spoke to Justin. Eric helps him a little.
Fun fact: Justin Reid holds offers from Brown, Princeton, Yale, and Harvard, and holds a 4.7 GPA.
Yep very intelligent kid! No offer from Stanford though just yet.
Ah! I see Stanford hasn’t offered yet, surprisingly. How does one get a 4.7 GPA? That’s a lot of extra credit work.
Probably a weighted GPA. It means he’s taking a lot of AP and Honors type classes. It could also be an unweighted GPA scale. I’m kind of surprised he already has offers from those schools, since they typically don’t make admissions decisions until the spring.
I’ve always wondered how we fair in the recruiting game going up against kids with offers from the Ivys. That’s certainly a conundrum for a youngster to have to consider and the Ivys would be hard to pass up.
I’m not liking it. My girl just got home from touring Stanford. She has a free ride at OU if she would accept it but want’s Stanford or one of the other elite academic institutions on her resume. She’s in the top 5% in the nation right now so we have to let her go if she wants. I sure would like to visit in Norman.
I’m sure she knows that you have a slight interest in the Sooners. Some kids do still look at the future. Of course you have to let her go.
when you take AP classes, they get rated on a scale up to 5.0. I took 6 AP classes my senior year and had a 4.5 that year.
We go after the greats in physics – Einstein, Feynman, Hawking – and not the great universities, but the greater your perception of one these “things,” the universities, the greater the brainwashing.
Even if Stanford does come calling does ou have a chance at swaying him with their “national merit scholar” tradition.
Makes him over qualified for LSU.
If we were taking 3 Safeties from this class and we could have OUR CHOICE which three would it be? (I know Johnson is already committed but if we had a clean slate) Haughton, Johnson, Sunderland, Reid, Whitfield or others? The Floor is now open for all opinions please!
Haughton, Reid and Sunderland. Then take whitfield as an athlete
But if I can’t have it that way then I leave Sunderland off and take whitfield. To me Reid and whitfield are game changers.
That makes bofus.
Agreed!
I like it!
Haughton, Reid and Whitfield in no particular order. Everyone of them can hit. Everyone of them are great in the classroom. Everyone of them are high character kids. Everyone of them can play man coverage or center field. Everyone of them have great frames. Reid is the most polished of them. McKinley is the least polished of them but McKinley’s upside is through the roof.
Agreed!
Tough call but the right call. Would OU tell Sunderland and J. Johnson to look elsewhere?
Very good question. I would go with Kahlil Haughton, DeChaun Holiday, and Justin Reid for the first bunch.
McKinley Whitfield, Will Sunderland, and Jamile Johnson for the second bunch.
With our coaches you probably put the 6 names in a hat and draw out 3 and you could not be wrong.
I wasn’t thinking Cali but good call I need to watch more of dechaun. I liked Marvell tell’s opening footage.
You cheated! He didn’t list holiday as an option π
Certainly would hate to be a coach and pick from all the choices they might have. I know M. Stoops has his criteria and your 3 choices probably are in line with his.
I put “others” at the end to open it up to everyone I thought you would probably have a guy we never heard of before! π
By the way y’all, Tony has sent in his write up and results of the Blind Tape Test for Will Sunderland, McKinley Whitfield and Justin Reid.
Sweet. I’m glad y’all reached out to tony he’s a good follow on twitter.
Looking forward to B.T.T. report in the next few days. September will be here before we know it.
Any chance we can get Tony to send a copy of his evaluations to Mike Stoops cause I think we know how Tony will feel after watching the tape on these guys!
reid = lsu bound
Nah…
Are they going to offer?
Full
You don’t think he wants to make his own name somewhere else though?
Is it just me or does it seem like Jerry Montgomery is recruiting every player in the country and visiting every one of them? He reminds me of a young Mike Stoops, outworking everyone on the recruiting trail.
Jerry is one coach I want to keep around for a long time but he’s destined to become a DC and later a head coach. We better enjoy him while we can.
…..I’m impressed with mont so far, also, but his recruiting prowess is yet to be determined……….several of his players are shipp’s
I was re-watching the spring game and it hit me who A. Ross reminds me of: Allen Patrick but faster.
Bingo!!!!!! I said that on scout about 2 weeks ago, I agree 100%
