– More Coaching Changes: Okay…. breathe…..yes, it’s a bad thing Jerry Montgomery left the program after being at OU for only two seasons. There is, however, some good. The Sooners do still have able recruiters on staff. New DBs coach Kerry Cooks has a strong reputation as a recruiter. Cale Gundy has a track record as strong as anyone. Dennis Simmons and Lincoln Riley are also good recruiters. All of these guys are young and energetic, something one might argue has been lacking with the Sooners coaching staff in recent years.

In terms of possible replacements for Montgomery, we certainly plan to address potential candidates at some point in the near future. We will not, however, just start throwing names out there for no good reason. We didn’t do it for the previous searches for a reason, and we don’t plan on that changing for this search either. When/if we can bring you something tangible, we will certainly do so. But to just start throwing out names because “we” think they make sense, or because so-and-so followed someone else on Twitter just seems somewhat irresponsible.

Bob Stoops made the comment in the statement he released yesterday of already having started the search to replace Montgomery, but based on some of what we’ve heard it’s just that…a start. Now that’s not to say he may already have a name or two in mind as to who he’d like to target, but as we understand it things are still very early in the process of finding a replacement.

– Arlington Lamar: The Dallas-Forth Worth area high school program is loaded this year with numerous D1 caliber talent, which includes OU offer and 2016 QB Shane Buechele. But it also includes recent OU Junior Day invitee and 2016 WR Kofi Boateng.

In speaking with him, Boateng wasn’t actually all that interested in the Sooners initially. That changed, however, when Lincoln Riley was hired and the scheme (presumably) switched back to a  pass-happy Air Raid type of offense. Boateng also shared with TFB that Buechele considering OU has made quite the difference for him as well.

However when I (Brandon) spoke with Boateng on Monday, he had not yet spoken with new OU outside wide receivers coach Dennis Simmons. But I think it’s safe to assume if that hasn’t already changed, it will do so pretty soon. Kofi has, however, been in contact with Cale Gundy and Lincoln Riley quite a bit. He said his relationship with those two has developed pretty quickly over the last couple of weeks. And he is hoping to continue that this weekend in Norman at the OU Junior Day.

– Jared Mayden: Back in late January, 2016 Sachse CB Jared Mayden announced a Top 3 (in no order) via Twitter that included: Ohio State, Oregon & TCU. Even before that, however, in November, the talented corner had a Top 5 which somewhat surprisingly also did not include Oklahoma. We say surprisingly because if you weren’t aware, Mayden is an OU legacy. Thus many assumed that the Sooners would seemingly be a strong contender for his services.

But with Mayden’s lead recruiter, Josh Heupel, no longer on the OU staff and with the retirement of Bobby Jack Wright, some have speculated whether or not the Sooners could get back in with the talented Texas corner.

Well based on the conversation our guy Alex had with Mayden last night, it sounds like he is still willing to listen should OU decide to step up their pursuit. In fact, the recently added Kerry Cooks was recruiting Mayden to Notre Dame. So OU’s new defensive backs coach is definitely familar with Mayden. And we can confirm that since Cooks’ hiring, the two have talked multiple times.

When we asked Mayden what could help OU get back into consideration, he stated “just getting to know the coaches.” And what could be better in that regard than getting some face time with the staff at an upcoming OU Junior Day?

Well, we can tell you that Mayden has been working to set up plans to try and get to Norman this weekend. But at this point those plans have not been finalized. Either way, thought, it seems as if Oklahoma isn’t quite out of this race as some may have thought.

– Mark Jackson: With the news of Montgomery heading to the NFL, OU fans will be very eager to see what kind of impact it has on Oklahoma’s recruiting what with one of their best closers no longer on staff. To that point, Alex was able to catch up with one 2016 pass rusher the now former OU staffer was handling the recruitment of in Cibolo Steele OLB/DE, Mark Jackson.

For those that don’t know or remember, OU was actually Jackson’s first offer which is definitely something he remembers. At the time, Bobby Jack Wright was handling his recruitment but then passed him off to Montgomery.

Jackson — who also holds offers from Baylor, Missouri, Oklahoma State & Texas — actually had not heard the news about Montgomery when we spoke with him. But the good news here for OU fans is Montgomery’s departure does not appear as though it will have that big of an impact on his feeling towards the Sooners. Reason being is that while the two had talked and were starting to build a relationship, it had not yet got to that point where this news was devastating for him. Or at least that is what he expressed to us when we spoke.

One of the main things Jackson likes about OU is their 3-4 defensive scheme, and the chance he would likely have to play the OLB position in that style of defense. He told us that as long as the next guy comes in and looks at him for the same ‘Jack’ LB position, then his interest in OU won’t waiver.

– Tope Imade: Another recent Junior Day invitee, Tope Imade, is a name that caught the attention of the one and only JY. Imade goes about 6’6″ 305 and has put his hand in the dirt at both the guard and tackle spots for Arlington’s Bowie High. JY had a chance to speak with Imade earlier this week and while he doesn’t have an OU offer in-hand just yet, he is hopeful that changes this weekend.

JY is a big fan of Imade’s and has been for some time now. While he may have somewhat of a lean from for a kid his size, he’s a guy that looks like he is still growing. So there is really no telling where exactly he could end up at. He’s most likely a guard at the next level, which is actually where he and Bill Bedenbaugh have discussed him playing.

Imade is somewhat open right now with regards to his recruiting, but it’s worth nothing that he is good friends with current Sooner commit and highly regarded 2016 OT, Jean Delance. So that is something that could potentially play into OU’s favor.

– UPDATE (11:59 am): I’m not sure I can say this is surprising necessarily, but I do believe it will be a good thing for everyone expected to participate.

– UPDATE (12:00 pm): Sooners have offered 2016 CB Byron Murphy (Scottsdale, AZ)

– UPDATE (12:02 pm): Sooners have also offered 2016 safety Deontay Anderson (Manvel, TX)

– UPDATE (12:05 pm): Also from last night, OU reportedly made two 2016 WR offers to Theo Howard (Westlake Village, CA) and Jackie Jones (Long Beach, CA).

– UPDATE (12:48 pm): I don’t know if it’s the lack of a single comment (other than my own) that has me concerned, or if you all really just aren’t aware of the visitor list for this weekend’s OU Junior Day that Alex and Brandon have been working so hard on.

– UPDATE (2:53 pm): Brandon has confirmed the note from above and Jared Mayden will be in Norman this weekend.

– UPDATE (3:36 pm): 2016 DT & Baylor commit, Jordan Elliott (Houston, TX), claiming an OU offer.

– UPDATE (4:08 pm): Demetric Warren reporting OU has offered 2016 DE Damion Dickens (Lexington, MS).

  • Ryan says:

Boateng is ranked as the 79th best receiver in the country and does not have any big time offers. Are Simmons and Riley gonna keep pursuing these kinds of guys because that is what they are used to doing at their previous schools? Surely they know they can go after the 5 star wideouts out there at a school like OU.

    • Stephen Dale says:

None of OU’s receiver signees were ranked above 49 nationally…OU is not going to be able to entice the ‘top 20 ‘ guys till the offense opens up next season and HS receivers begin to envision themselves in Riley’s offense……..by 2017, and if riley is still around, OU should be able to pilfer some of the ‘elite’ receivers once again.

    • Stephen says:

Not necessarily about stars but how they fit into a system but I agree, attack the big time players.

    • OkieRandolph says:

Ratings at this point are to me somewhat of less importance until maybe near the end of Sept on high school players. Many of these kids have been ranked, and there will be LOTS of others who will only be playing their 2nd season of being a starter if they go to a large school where the competition is stout. You’ll see the star ratings change a bunch in the next 6 months.

    • Shawn Cummings says:

I will take a coaches judgement/accessment about a players skill set, abilities and rankings over ANY AND ALL high school player ranking “experts”

      • John Garner says:

Agree. Coaches know better how certain skill sets fit into their scheme.

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Yes. But when a kid does not have offers from other schools of OU’s cailber i.e OSU, Bama, USC, FSU, etc…one begins to wonder.

      • Eric Hoffpauir says:

Yeah, Baylor and TCU have done pretty well with that route the last few years.

        • hushnpa says:

-heard of a couple teams in a big game the other day that had no five stars at all – one teams players’ average high school rating was 2.75 stars or so you probably saw it , it was the Super Bowl 🙂

      • Ryan says:

Yeah that’s really worked out well with the receivers we’ve recruited lately right? Also, why doesn’t this guy have major offers from schools like OU? Those coaching staffs are better “experts” than these ranking “experts”. If you have a chance at an Amari Cooper type player you go all out to sign him.

        • Shawn Cummings says:

Why don’t you go to Rivals and go back about 10 years in the past at recruiting classes. Go see who was top star ranked and look at some of the 3 and 4 stars. I promise you, you will recognize more 3 stars as successful than 5 stars

        • Shawn Cummings says:

BTW, OU could have 10 Coopers and nothing would have come up with them because of QB play and inconsistent play calling

        • Indy_sooner says:

Amari Cooper was special… I saw him play sophomore and knew he would be a beast of the bat. But these guys usually have 30+ offers so chances to land em’ is slim. Same can be said of the Treadwells, Dez Bryants, AJ Green, DGB..etc.

But there are people who are just good at spotting talent whether it is 2 stars of none. Holgo is one of these people. Everywhere he has been, he has grabbed guys that no one knew about and made em’ AA. Wes Welker (@TTU) Bailey and Kevin White (WVU), Justin Blackmon (OSU) Most of these cats were 3 stars. I am not saying that we’ll have the same output, but they are outputs of the airraid that were not that highly ranked. At least give the new guys a chance before writing off their body of work. Different Offensive coaches

    • JD says:

The air raid doesn’t need top wrs to be successful…I can’t think of a top guy that has played for Leach or Riley off the top of my head…an I mean top ranked in hs…I’ll gladly take em but I won’t worry over it…we’ll get some top guys here imo regardless…just let the games begin

    • Indy_sooner says:

No disrespect to you, because I know you are referring to the perceived lack of 5 star offers… I get that, but Justin Hardy, dude that just broke RB85’s reception record @ ECU was a walk-on. Watch that dude play and you will be scratching your head.

re: the site issues – I have been told that the loading issues should now be resolved.

YOU NEED TO CLEAR YOUR BROWSER CACHE & DELETE YOUR COOKIES.

There was a change to the site’s URL address (technical side of things, not the actual name of the site or anything) and unless it’s your first time here, your computer (or however you’re accessing the site) will almost assuredly have the old URL/cache which s/b what is causing most of the problems for people.

You might also try holding down the shift key and hitting refresh, as our IT guy is telling me that will sometimes all you to pull from the actual server rather than the cached copy.

    • Randy White says:

That didn’t work on an IPhone/IPad. I’ll wait and check back later.

    • KatyOUdad says:

Follow the site everyday. I don’t post much, but enjoy the great information and comments. No issues with the site on my MS Surface 2. Everything loads quickly.

      • Jordan Esco says:

Good to hear. It seems to be hit and miss for some people and not across the entire network for whatever reasons. It is, however, incredibly frustrating nevertheless.

    • Jeremy Phillips says:

It’s finally back to normal for me… Thanks guys!

    • Bob Edwards says:

Something humorous about posting instructions on the site on how to actually see the site….

I understand that posting it somewhere else would not help either, but still kind of humorous.

Anyway glad that it is back up.

      • Jordan Esco says:

fair point but it seemed like some were having issues but still able to eventually get here

        • Bob Edwards says:

Oh, I get that. Not much you could do other than post it on the front page and I get why you may not want to do that. Did not mean to criticize, just got a chuckle out of it. Worked at a place once that would send out an email to tell you the email system was down.

        • Sooner Ray says:

Jordan, I have never experienced the problems that some have expressed but I just noticed that I don’t see some of the early morning comments in the news thread and also the comments that were in the Jr. day OP thread prior to today are gone.

      • OkieRandolph says:

Yeah, kinda like Braille on a drive up ATM machine. ha

It’s a great list of attendees. A lot of North TX kids. Maybe it is due to the longer distance, but would like to see more Houston area kids there. Talent is deep here.

    • EasTex says:

I found it interesting so many SouthLake kids are attending. I could also say it’s about time, that program has turned out many good players and too often they went to Texsa.

  • Randy White says:

The sites back up and working. Not sure what happened but that’s the world of 1s and 0s.

  • Zack says:

    Finally back

  • brainpimp says:

Hundreds of comments spun off into the ether. I bet that’s where your list comments went.

  • Boom says:

I know Jordan did an excellent piece if you want to search for it on TFB. However, this is just crazy what happened in 2011. These guys would be our RS Srs for the upcoming year.

    DB Bennett Okotcha
    TE Max Stevenson DanTapko
    QB Kendal Thompson
    RB Brandon Williams
    ATH Danzel Williams

    • BigJoeBrown says:

wow…..that’s a bit depressing, on the other hand it has opened up some scholorships

    • Stephen says:

The 13′ class kind of seems likes it’s heading down a similar path.

    • Sooner 76 says:

That 2011 signing class only had 16 players, and only 1 of them was a DB (Okotcha), who lasted one season. That’s why I say that Martinez left the cupboard bare for Mike.

Shannon and Lindley were the only LBers in the class.

The 2012 class had 25 players, but only 1 LBer (Striker). JUCO Kass Everett was Martinez’s only DB. Mike got Sanchez and Gary Simon at the end after he arrived.

This is why OU has been hurting on D the last year: lack of talent and depth at LBer and DB. OU has two inside LBers who started but one was projected as a OLBer (Evans) and the other a S (Dom)

Things are better now; the sky is not falling.

      • Indy_sooner says:

Great breakdown. Sad part is that those guys would have been capitalizing this year as seniors. That’s why part sympathizes with the coaches. 60% of the class, 4 and 5 stars never panned out, left or got into trouble by year#2

  • mgcsooner says:

Great add. I sure hope OU intends to follow up the effort in Texas with satellite camps this year in DFW & HOU areas.

  • hOUligan says:

IMO good call on TFB not throwing out names for the new DL coach. Leave the speculation to us users so there is no confusion when you guys do get something with some substance. So….hearing anything yet? ; > )

    • John Garner says:

Yeah, like that crap Rivals is peddling. Like they know squat. More like Soonerpoop instead of Soonerscoop.

  • SoonerfanTU says:

Not trying to stir the pot, but didn’t TFB throw out some names that were speculation, or nothing more than “good fits”? Wasn’t there an entire article written about Jim Leavitt? lol

Nothing wrong with speculation if it is presented as just that, speculation.

  • EasTex says:

    Okay…. breathe…..

    Sage advice.

  • D'Brickashaw Ferguson says:

My jaw dropped when watching Deontay Anderson’s highlights. He is dynamite and his offer list is very impressive

  • nicjams says:

I don’t know about anyone else, but that visitor list article doesn’t show up on the TFB homepage.

    • Bob Edwards says:

      I see it.

    • Jordan Esco says:

      It’s on TOP.

I put it there so it didn’t continue to get bumped down the front page. By the weekend, it would have been behind like 15 other posts and I didn’t want anyone to lose track of it and/or not even know it was there.

  • Boom says:

Monty is gone now and OU is unraveling. OU will be horrible next year due to the Stoops brothers and Kish, Now, TFB is unraveling too. This is horrible to have a site that can’t get its act together just like OU. Unreal. Look, this is reality not being negative as you sunshine pumpers would say. This site has just dropped the ball after all this “hype” about how good they beefed up the servers to handle all of the traffic. I will NEVER believe in the hype again much less OUs hype machine.
Hmm, I hope this brought a smile to some of you.

    • EasTex says:

Burn it down….down to the ground.

      • Boom says:

wasn’t sure if I should send it as i was having some fun. Hopefully Jordan will get a laugh out of it since he’s busting his tail on this IT stuff.

        • EasTex says:

Because I know your style, I got it immediately.

          • Boom says:

Starting 7 on 7 in a week so we are geared up and ready to go. pumped and so are the kids. Wish you could be a part of it.

          • EasTex says:

            I wouldn’t be any good at 7on7.
My screaming “hit him” wouldn’t go well there.

          • Boom says:

It’s about working with 12 year old’s more than anything. Amazing how well they are developing today compared to yesteryear when i was playing. Its fast and fun, you would enjoy it.

          • EasTex says:

            I understand you.
I’m just an old lineman, nose guard and pulling guard were my positions, and was also a catcher that played like a nose guard and pulling guard.
I always enjoyed the slobber knocking so I could watch the fast guys running down the field.

          • Boom says:

Funny how some of you slobber knockers know how to call a good game. Seems like a lot of OC are old OLmen.

          • EasTex says:

Yeah, there are many OCs that were linemen.
Of course, most linemen think you should only throw to fool’em and pound the rock the rest of the time. 🙂

    • OkieRandolph says:

Why hell yeah!!! All that money we’re paying and they can’t get their act together any better than this. Guess we’ll have to go to some free site!!!

  • Bob Edwards says:

So in the discussions about people to replace Monty I have heard a number of suggestions. I am not going to comment on an individual name but focus on the reasons various people have given for their choices:

    1) A young guy who relates to the kids
    2) A guy with lots of experience/big time reputation
    3) A guy with 3-4 experience
    4) A former Sooner
    5) Played in the NFL
    6) Never worked with/played for/knows anyone who knows Bob
    7) A good recruiter
    8) Good at developing players

If you read closely, some pretty much contradict others. A young guy with lots of experience? A former Sooner who has no ties to Bob? etc. Obviously we are highly unlikely to get someone who meets all the requirements. We will probably have to settle for someone who does not meet them all.

So what’s your priority? Realize that the order you put these in is a good part of why we disagree with each other on who the best candidate is.

  • Jordan Esco says:

Just had a great (actually kind of scary if you think about it) question posed to me, so I figured I would throw it out there as well.

Name OU’s starting offensive tackles for the 2015 season opener.

  • KJ1123 says:

Jack Jones out of LB Poly is an interesting offer. I came across his film a year ago and he looked pretty good for a Jr. Amazing change of direction skills. He’s a little undersized but it’s good to see OU reaching out to SoCal prospects early.

Still having discrepancies between the number of posts the front page says ought to be there and the number I see. Also when I open some previous posts, like the one announcing Cook and Simmons, all the comments are gone and it says “0 comments.” The one about Jerry Montgomery loads all the comments just fine. This one loads 127 comments, but the front pages says only 17.

      • Exiled In Ohio says:

Wasn’t trying to give you grief; I appreciate all you do! Just wanted to pass on that from my experience this isn’t a cached data problem, and very likely not a cookie issue.

        • Steve Johns says:

Are you guys on a shared or dedicated server?

          • Jordan Esco says:

I believe it is a shared, but not 100% sure on that

          • Steve Johns says:

I’d first look into the mySQL database to see if that is the issue. WP platforms are good but fickle. I know a couple of guys who are excellent at trouble shooting WP that would do it for cheap. Let me know if interested.

        • Sam Sherwood says:

Are you using a WordPress template?
If so, maybe a mySQL database problem.

          • Jordan Esco says:

            Yes, it is WordPress

          • Sam Sherwood says:

Probably want to ask your hosting provider to reboot the webserver as soon as possible. That might get the server’s mySQL service to reset and start working correctly.

  • soonermusic says:

Although it’s missing posts and data and updates, and sometimes the header, what does load, loads lightning fast.

Reminds me of the old story about the pilot who speaks to the passengers of the overseas flight: “Ladies and gentlemen, I have good news and bad news: the bad news: Our navigational equipment has all gone down. I am sorry to report that we are totally lost, no idea where we are and can’t even tell what direction we’re going. The good news is: We’re making very good time! ” 🙂

  • boomersooner says:

sad to hear about tark. his teams were always fun to watch. loved watching them and maramount score a bazillion points. and nothing more touching than that hank gathers/bo kimble story

    • EasTex says:

Lots of people were hating on Tark back in the day, but I too loved watching those teams of his score every other second.

  • Jordan Esco says:

    – UPDATE (4:08 pm): Demetric Warren reporting OU has offered 2016 DE Damion Dickens (Lexington, MS).

  • EasTex says:

Refreshed and still the 12:48 is the latest update.
    Status report purposes only.

    • Zack says:

How many OL do you think we take this year 3 or 4? Only 2 seniors right?

    • Steve Johns says:

Every time I see a #66, still think of Granny! Old timers will know who I’m talking about.

      • RocketCitySooner says:

I met Granny a few times. He and I were dating girls who lived in the same dorm. I’ve never seen a man that big move so much like a cat.

      • Sooner 76 says:

Liggins was a great player. The 67 team was one of my all-time favorites. Made it to every home game.

      • John Garner says:

Granville Liggins — now there’s a blast from the past. Amazing athlete.

      • EasTex says:

I remember, he was my favorite as I was also a nose guard.
I was crushed when he got hurt in the Orange Bowl.

      • Steve Johns says:

More old timers, like me, on here than I thought! A 5-10 200lbs quick as a cat NG, is hard to imagine these days but he was a helluva player. Had a long and illustrious career in the CFL.

        • soonermusic says:

even in those days he was a bit undersized for the position. But it sure didn’t matter. He was the player that represented the turn of OU’s fortunes, I thought. A whole different type of player.

  • Sooner_Ace says:

Interesting take on Monty to GB (from LandThieves poster):

For those of you who are saying that its Monty’s path to the NFL. Read up a little bit on what a QC coach is, and who usually becomes QC coaches. Or, on second thought, I’ll give you a sampling of NFL Defensive QC coaches around the league:

GB current DQC coach John Rushing: 2 years Utah State Secondary coach, 1 year Montana State Secondary, Boise St Grad Assistant
Denver Chris Beake: Air Force GA, Offensive/Defensive/QC assistant San Fran, ATL LB coach for 2 years, Offensive assistant/Off. QC Seattle, Offensive assistant San Fran, Offensive Assistant Cleveland, then Denver
Kansas City Britt Reid: St Johns Prep School assistent OL coach, Temple University Grad Assistant, then KC quality control
Kansas City Mark DeLeone: Iowa Student Assistant, New Hampshire Dir. of Football Ops/assistant OL coach, UF QC, Temple GA, NY Jets Defensive Assistant, then KC quality control
Dallas Ben Bloom: GA defensive line Tufts University, Cle Browns Assistant Team Ops, defensive assistant Cle Browns, Dallas Defensive QC

Jerry Montgomery: 05 North Iowa CC DC, North Iowa GA, North Iowa DL, Wyoming DL, Michigan DL, OU DL, OU co dc

Which one of these is not like the others? The ONLY way this makes sense is if he is being placed in a QC role temporarily until GB either gets rid of another coach or GB knows another coach is moving on and then they will slide him over into a position coach spot. QC coaches and offensive/defensive “assistants” are basically assistants to the position coaches, they aren’t a path to the NFL for a “rising star” (Stoops’ words) at a school like OU.

edit: as were todd haley, steve spagnuolo, brad childress, tony sparano, et al
i get what people are trying to say, but it doesn’t necessarily have to mean anything other than its a foot in the door and he’ll have to pay his dues. not many guys get to be the head coach at mich st then lsu then go straight to hc in the nfl and leave them hanging and then come back to college when the nfl ain’t for them

      • EasTex says:

        Good piece.
With the work ethic Monty exhibited at OU he will do well in his new job and in climbing the ladder.

      • Sooner_Ace says:

granted, i did not look too heavily into, just thought it was food for discussion

        • boomersooner says:

of course and thank you for bringing it over here. i know we usually don’t agree on most stuff but enjoy your thoughts as they are presented in a well thought out thoughtful process. you and toats are 2 of my favorite disagreers because you keep it light. it just does not surprise me that someone on landthieves would be very shortsighted and skew all the way to the negative on a subject which can be debunked in 2 minutes

          • Sooner_Ace says:

Land Thieves as a source not normally a good idea 🙂 And I do enjoy the banter back and forth as well, and occasionally we even agree lol 🙂

    • Steve Johns says:

It really doesn’t matter much now why he took the job.

Good article. Thanks for posting. I dont know what it means in terms of state of the sooner football program, but I think logic tells me things are pretty far from ok. The ND guy we picked up was someone who got demoted and the WSU man came here for family reasons. Not exactly a ringing endorsement of Oklahoma as a big time destination program.

          • EasTex says:

He never celebrates when anything good happens, yet is always eager to wallow in misery.
Have only heard what LT is like, never been there, but based on what I’ve heard this guy seems like he would fit in fine over there.

          • JD says:

I just lurk over the recruiting board during crunch time and thats what I took from guys that actual post..not really my crowd either..like being at a bar w a bunch of smartaces and only a limited number actually know anything about football

          • EasTex says:

            Funny story.
I was the only OU fan at a sports bar in Austin back ’77 with a few hundred wHorn fans. I let them know early on I was there and we all had a good time bantering back and forth, except for one guy.
Whenever things went well for Texsa they would all yell “OU sucks” and that one guy would turn around and flip me off. Whenever things went well for OU I would yell “Boomer,” and that one guy would flip me off.
Finally, late in the game when it was obvious OU wouldn’t be able to come back that guy joined in on the “OU sucks” then double flipped me.
That did it, so I stood up and yelled “if OU sucks then Darrell Royal sucks.”
It got real quiet and there were some mutterings that I had gone too far, I couldn’t talk about their greatest coach like that. So I asked loudly to the few hundred there, “where did DKR go to college?” Minds churned, feet shuffled, change jingled and finally some guy said “Texsa.”
I said no dumbasses, DKR went to OU. Your greatest coach was an All-American football player at OU. Stunned silence.
As we filed out I realized I had just performed one of the greatest buzz kills of all time. Several hundred drinking pitchers of beer for four hours were completely without their buzzes as they left.

          • JD says:

LOL good story (nothing like the Bonnie and Clyde one but still good)…we could get em with Mack but I wouldn’t want to claim him the way he went out

  • BleedCrimson says:

WBB at Baylor in 30 min… Get it girls

  • RocketCitySooner says:

I’m not seeing any new posts. Is there a problem?

  • Stephen Dale says:

the offers to these ‘elite’ prospects make news but OU has little chance but for a fraction of them.. many are already committed or looking a high D-1 schools much closer to home…hopefully OU can sign 3-5 of Scout’s top 300 for 2016. that would make a nice group to head a class of 18-20…..on the other hand, an offer from OU looks good on a prospects offer sheet and give the kid something to brag about…………..makes for nice relations between the staff and HS coaches across the country….

    • Steve Johns says:

You ever thought about becoming a motivational speaker?

    • blaster1371 says:

That is the biggest shot in the dark I have heard here. You have no idea what OU’s chances are with any of the 2016 prospects…no one does. Not enough info out there yet and what is out there probably won’t stand up over the next 12 months.

      • EasTex says:

You reply to him as though his comment is actually serious and based in reality.

      • boomersooner says:

yeah he’s like marshawn lynch or a lost animal or a gremlin. the more you feed him, the more he wants to stick around and get stronger

      • Stephen Dale says:

blaster………..history is pretty clear. OU signs roughly 10%-15% of those offered on a yearly basis….that is not abnormal at the D-1 level ; however, the more successful teams ( Alabama, tOSU, USC, Texas, etc) average closer to 25%-35% signing rate to offer ratio.–and that is expected since young guys flock to high profile programs more readily whether said school is winning or losing… again it has much to do with demographics, location, and conference perception—-3 things OU coaches have no control over………..last season for example, ou signed 24 out of some 150 offers = 16% success rate ….depending on the won-loss for 2015 , that percentage may fluctuate up or down……….

Dayuuummmm, I get caught up in work for a few days and find this out about Monty??? Wtf!! Soooooo does anyone have any idea of the direction we might be headed for his replacement?
We HAVE to keep Bedenbaugh(sp?) have to. I don’t even know who the best candidates would be to replace Monty. I wish him the best. He worked his butt off for us.

    • Lane Gilstrap says:

There are no confirmed candidates yet. They say they are still early in the process so we can only speculate who it might be. I think Mike Elston from Notre Dame would be a solid hire. He already knows the 3-4. A couple good non 3-4 guys are Chris Kiffen from Ole Miss and Brick Haley from LSU.

    • Zack says:

After listening to his radio show and his appearance in the boz 30 for 30, he seems like he has absolutely no touch with fans/audiences…I can’t imagine he would be able to reach 18-22 year old kids

      • Steve Johns says:

Yeah he was/is critical of Bob and the program. That’s why I don’t see him getting even an interview.

        • boomersooner says:

ok so i get it, don’t understand it or condone it, but i get why fans don’t like him. they are deflecting all their angst, anger, vitriol, bitterness, etc aimed at themselves because they went all in on bob since he won it all his 2nd yr in and now they feel let down or whatever since we haven’t won it since. we’ve been there but he doesn’t get credit for that. what is it about former players that some don’t like him? he seems to accommodate them doesn’t he? is it closing practice?

          • Steve Johns says:

From what I can tell he has embraced former players and coaches from the get-go. Years ago there was some friction between Wilkinson & Switzer players, could be something similar now with Switzer vs Stoops guys. Who knows.

          • boomersooner says:

yeah its always seemed to me that he loves having the guys back and help even by just showing their face

    • EasTex says:

I love Ol’Tony, but this isn’t the time or place.

      • Zack says:

I would like his knowledge about the position and what it takes to play at an elite level but he is far from smooth.

        • EasTex says:

He is so far removed from his playing days, much less the fact he has never coached, that the idea isn’t worthy of consideration.
He can throw all the hats in all the rings he wants, it won’t matter.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

His comment, if serious, was a bit insulting to OU coaching. He has never coached. Loved him in his playing days, but come on now.

        • Boomer4life says:

He really isn’t shy about speaking his mind no matter the audience.

      • blaster1371 says:

I think he would end up shoving Mike into a gatorade bottle the first time Mike screamed at him.

I’m officially putting my name in the hat for the DL Coaching Job at @OU_Football!! @OU_CoachStoops!!
Like I said yeserday, Tony brings two super bowl rings to the table, a National Championship, he won the Lombardi Award 12 years in the NFL. Does that mean he can coach, well thats a wait and see but I bet he can recruit! Now get Dusty and Teddy and we could be back on the Defensive Map Nationally. you are a D lineman coach, your in front of a recurit with a superbowl ring and Nat Champ ring kids love the bling bling bling add that to Bob Stoops and tradition hard to turn down

    • Zack says:

If we’re talking about hiring our former players tony would be way down on the list. Yes he has a ton of awards and rings but i can’t see him relating well to kids, I could be wrong though.

    • ellisbr says:

IMO it would be completely ridiculous and irresponsible of BStoops to go around and hire former Sooner greats. Most of them have zero experience at coaching and the ones that do haven’t really proved themselves to be ready to coach at a place like OU. Stoops needs to sit down, find out who is the very best at coaching up Dlines and make a list, offer them a hefty amount and move on down the list until someone takes it….or MAKE someone take it by offering something they can’t refuse. That’s just my opinion though.
