Open Post | Monday, Mar. 23rd (UPDATE 2:05 pm)

– Zack Sanchez: Spoke with a source recently and was told that prior to spring break Zack Sanchez was having some back problems. Apparently it was enough of a hindrance that in OU’s lone practice thus far, Stanvon Taylor had even been getting some of what would normally be Sanchez’s reps. I haven’t been led to believe Sanchez’s back issue is anything to worry about long-term, but it will be interesting to see if Kerry Cooks can bring out the best in Taylor. He’s always been an incredible athlete, but fell behind somewhat in terms of the cornerback competition. – (Super K)

– Matt Hegarty: As we mentioned earlier this month, Notre Dame offensive lineman Matt Hegarty is looking to transfer and Oklahoma is one of the three schools he is planning to visit. Hegarty has already graduated from Notre Dame, so he will be immediately eligible to play this 2015 season. He recently visited Florida State, we are hearing he will be making his Norman visit next month. In fact, it sounds like it could be around the time of the Red/White game. – (Brandon)

– Maurice Chandler: Former OK Preps & Lawton cornerback Maurice Chandler is a name many of you may be familiar with. He signed with NEO out of high school and will be graduating next December. We feel Chandler has elite potential with great length and size for a corner, but he also appears have that rare and coveted speed for someone his size (6’1″ 190).

Oklahoma was interested in Chandler when he was in high school and when we caught up with him this past weekend, it appears the Sooners have been in touch again here recently. Chandler let us know that Dennis Simmons has reached out to him and the two are expected to speak at some point this week. He also mentioned there is a good chance he could be speaking with several other OU coaches this week as well.

As we mentioned previously, OU is planning to take two corners in this class and just one safety. However, exceptions would be made for an elite talent (or two). And on film Chandler looks like an elite prospect, in our opinion. All the size and athleticism you want is there, but he’s also surprisingly polished in his technique for a junior college level corner.

Chandler currently holds offers from Arizona State, Nebraska, Utah, Arkansas State, Utah State & Toledo. We fully expect he and his fellow OK Preps teammate, LB Chris Baccus, to pick up many more offers in the coming months. – (Super K & Brandon)

– Wyatt Davis: An offensive tackle out of Bellflower (CA), Davis is already one of the most coveted prospects in the 2017 class. He holds offers from Alabama, Oklahoma, UCLA & USC. Bill Bedenbaugh has been recruiting Davis diligently, who shared with TFB he is planning a visit to Norman during his spring break (which falls between April 1-9). Davis said he “can’t wait to meet everyone on the staff…especially coach Bedenbaugh.”

It’s still very early but Davis commented on his interest in the Sooners saying, “I’m extremely interested in OU…the tradition is great and, more importantly, coach Bedenbagh is an excellent coach.” – (Brandon)

UPDATE (11:20 am): I had a chance to speak with star 2016 RB Devwah Whaley out of Beaumont (TX), who made his first trip to Norman this past weekend with his family and loved it. He told me that it met all of his expectations. Interestingly, it seems Whaley is being recruited by a number of the OU coaching staff including; Cale Gundy, Tim Kish, Jay Boulware, Lincoln Riley and even the head man himself, Bob Stoops.

Whaley tells me that he communicates with the OU staff every day and, as of right now, he says Oklahoma is his top school! Whaley does, however, want to take some additional visits before making a decision. He visited Alabama last summer and received an offer from the Crimson Tide at the time. He says he hopes to make it back out to Tuscaloosa for another visit. He also said  he’d like to visit the University of Georgia if possible. As far as a timeline for commitment, he’s still thinking about that and admits that things could change. But right now he’d like to be committed sometime before his senior year.

Whaley came away from the visit impressed and the OU staff is clearly making him a major priority, which he says he’s very aware of and appreciates. He also likes the fact that while a school like Texas A&M may be looking to take multiple running backs in this class, OU is only looking to take one.

The Sooners seem to have placed themselves in a good spot with Whaley thanks to the great work of the staff and it’s a good thing, because he strikes me as both an impressive athlete and young man. – (Super K)

– UPDATE (2:05 pm): 2016 QB Augie DeBiase (Neptune Beach, FL) is on campus today for an unofficial visit.

Good morning football BRAINIACS may everyone be blessed on this great Monday morning. What a great weekend for all Sooners in action this weekend.

  • Defend Colfax says:

    awesome thanks guys

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

Not saying its good Sanchez has an injury, but if it works out that Taylor improves and adds depth it could help in the long term.

    • Defend Colfax says:

Anytime you’ve been riding the bench and you get some new blood as your position coach, you have got to take that opportunity. We’ve had a lot of turn over, somebody better be hungry.

      • Soonerfandave84 says:

Yep I agree 100%…time to show what you can do or transfer to an FCS school

    • Super K says:

I would love to see Stanvon shine. Without seeing their testing times Id guess he’s one of the best raw athletes at the DB position.

      • Soonerfandave84 says:

I was very excited when he chose OU, seen some of his highlights he is a grade above when it comes to the physical skills…maybe a new coach can get through to him with his assignments.

    • hOUligan says:

Hoping Taylor along with Austin and Green are making the kind of improvements that get them in the rotation, especially hearing Sanchez has back issues. If it’s spinal and not just muscular, those are tough to overcome.

      • Jed says:

Indeed. Sanchez is a tough character, but, damn, I wince every time I see him get hit. There’s just not that much of him to soak up the punishment.

  • ToatsMcGoats says:

Love it when my fellow Norsemen get shout outs! Go Go NEO!

  • SCKSChief says:

Congrats to the Men’s and Women’s hoops teams. Keep on dancing!

  • Jason Vos says:

Hey K, what are you hearing in terms of Mixon. Is he playing more RB or getting a lot of reps as a split out RB

    • Jordan Esco says:

They’ve only had one practice, in shorts. Hard to really say what anyone has done yet as they are still working to install the offense and haven’t even put on the pads yet. Practice today should still be in shorts as well per NCAA rules I believe, fwiw.

    • Super K says:

He’s at Rb but heard he is doing drills with WRs as well so I’m guessing they’ll use him the way baylor does. But I’ll continue to check

  • Jason Vos says:

I bet Jordan Smallwood has a breakout year with the new offense

    • Tucker says:

It’s very possible. This new offense will be giving a lot of new chances. I’m very excited to see what happens.

    • Brent says:

I hope you’re right, but what do you consider a breakout year?

  • Tucker says:

TFB, any chance we get a practice update today? Loved what you guys were putting out before.

  • Tucker says:

Two things I really like about chandler: (1) Effectively using his body in zone man to ride the receiver in the boundary. (2) Driving his hips through the tackle.

    • Super K says:

Both excellent observations! Noticed them as well.

      • Tucker says:

The only knock I’d give on immediate observation is occasional stone hands. But there is a reason he plays defense right? Ha.

  • BigJoeBrown says:

In your opinion, how is OU’s relationship with Lawton? I say this because Barrett wne to t Neb, in addition to Darrly Patterson’s offer being pulled last year which encouraged him to sign with KSU. Just curious if there is Sooner love in L-town.

    • William Ryan says:

Plenty of Lawton kids go to ou Larry birdine, dj Wolfe, Jamal brown, Antonio Perkins, and on and on. I myself was shocked Barrett went to Nebraska.

    • William Ryan says:

If there was any place in the state that doesn’t show ou love it would have to be millwood

  • Dwebb_96 says:

What a great Monday… Sweet 16 and an Open Post!

  • sodaksooner says:

Any news on Whaleys visit? Or did he make it in?

    • Jordan Esco says:

Definitely made it, posted some pics in the wknd OP. Still trying to catch up w/ him post-visit, though.

  • Jason Vos says:

Oklahoma Players OU should be taking a real hard look at
    1.) Chris Baccus (LB)
    2.) Calvin Bundage (LB)
    3.) T.J Fiailoa (OG)
    4.) Jordan Brown (WR)
    5.) Corey Tipsword (DT)

Especially the 2 LB’s. We need to wrap those 2 up early. That would give us 3 in state LB commits. Then we can focus on some of the other out of state LB’s

  • Dustin says:

    Whaley commit yet?

  • Boom says:

Hoping to hear a BOOM from Baccus & Chandler this spring. Oklahoma boys bringing the Boom would be awesome.

  • Chris White says:

Would Hegarty be a Guard or a tackle? I don’t know much about him besides he would be a proven veteran to add to the line.

  • Tucker says:

Does anyone know if the spring game will be televised this year?

    • Tucker says:

Yeeeep… I remember something the other day on twitter from Kirk Herbstreit bashing OU.

      • Dustin says:

Yeah, something about OU hasn’t mattered for a while. I’m paraphrasing, of course, but I just thought, “One season is ‘a while’?”

        • Soonerfandave84 says:

Think he was referring to the fact OU hasnt been in the NC hunt in November since 2008

          • Dustin says:

Either way, he came across as a huge douche. I always thought if anyone was above all that crap, it was Herbie.

          • Soonerfandave84 says:

Yeah it was douchy thing to say, but unfortunately true too

          • Dustin says:

I don’t care. My allegiances dictate he is now my enemy. 😉

          • Soonerfandave84 says:

            Lol OK then

          • Dustin says:

On the real, though, I ain’t mad. Everything ESPN does just makes me giggle. Cowherd actually used Traber as a reference to confirm his theory about a Durant/Westbrook feud and inevitable breakup.

          • Soonerfandave84 says:

ESPN makes news, they dont report it as much as they used too

edit: I am very glad Rece Davis is taking over CGD too, he is the best ESPN has.

          • Tucker says:

HA! Him and Chris fowler both rubbed me the wrong way this year! However, both are people that I have also enjoyed on ESPN.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

            Fowler got canned.

          • Tucker says:

That’s what happens when you go on a tirade about SEC bias which makes you look even move SEC biased.

          • Buster Rhymes 4 says:

He’s been my enemy since he broke that story that Michigan was hiring Les Miles to replace Rich Rod before N.C. game. Dirty pool in my book…considering he is an Ohio State guy.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Actually, you’re mistaken. If the rankings during a given season mean something than OU was in the hunt for being no 1. Preseason No 3 until Sam Bradford got hurt. 2010 ranked third in the nation at week 7. 2011 preseason no 1, ranked 5th at week 11. 2012 Preseason ranked 4th…by week 8 ranked 7th…,2013 is the only year not in the hunt…sorry but you and Herbie are wrong.

    • BoomerDave says:

Not sure I find anything “hateful” in their re-seedlings. The Big XII was exposed. All we can do is prove them wrong.

      • MrBigsby says:

Not sure why you think they were “exposed”. The Big 12 and ACC are still the best leagues in the country. No one really expected the Big 12 to have multiple final 4 teams, but from top to bottom it’s a very strong league. Saying they were the “best” conference doesn’t mean they have the best individual teams, it simply means they were the most balanced conference. There really wasn’t that much difference between #1 and number #7.

        • cpearc00 says:

I would call having two #3 seeds lose in the first round being “exposed.” I understand your argument, but Baylor and ISU were clearly seeded too high.

          • MrBigsby says:

I don’t think ISU was seeded too high, just had a bad game….it happens. Baylor was seeded too high though. Was UCLA seeded to low then at 11 and now they are in Sweet 16? Hell, they were lucky to even be IN the tournament. It wouldn’t be March Madness without upsets.

          • cpearc00 says:

Of course, but when your conference has 7 teams make it (seeds: 2, 3,3,3,5,9,11) and only two remain (3 & 5 seed), I’d call it underwhelming at best. Maybe you don’t like the word “exposed” and I understand that, but hopefully we can both agree the Big 12 has under-performed in this tourney.

          • MrBigsby says:

How many Big 12 teams did you have making the Sweet 16 in your bracket? I had OU, KU, and ISU. WVU surprised me.

          • cpearc00 says:

I had 4 so I’m admittedly a little upset with the Big 12’s play. But, based on seedings alone, 4 is the correct number and, while upsets obviously happen, anything less should be a disappointment, no?

          • MrBigsby says:

Definitely disappointing, but looking at match-ups, I thought it was obvious Baylor wasn’t getting to the Sweet 16. Also thought KU had the easiest shot of making. So I’m obviously no guru!!

          • cpearc00 says:

I’ll be the first to admit I’m not either!

          • boomersooner says:

i see your side of it, and i would agree with disappointment more so than exposed. ISU played like absolute crap and missed many open shots. i think they just crashed after being too high from all the “hilton magic” bull crap that had been going on in the media for the last month. baylor also played like crap. wv has finally started to look like that pesky sucker they were early in conference play. kansas was overseeded and got handled by a decent wich st. we haven’t played great and still won both games. i think it woulda been fine to move every single team from the big 12 down a line, which woulda kicked tex out, which is also fine

          • Sooner_Ace says:

“… which woulda kicked tex out” – This phrase works for many an item 🙂

          • boomersooner says:

            amen, brother

          • BleedCrimson says:

I hit 14 of the 16 on my bracket. Missed ISU, AZ. Just a bit of luck

          • Stephen Dale says:

            no question about it.

          • Boom says:

I guess Villanova and Virginia were exposed too. A year or so ago Duke was #1 seed and got beat in 1st round. Madness.

          • cpearc00 says:

Lol, the topic is the performance of our conference. I’m not blind to the fact that upsets happen in the tourney. No need to be patronizing.

          • Boom says:

My point was i guess Duke was seeded to high at #2. I’m not patronizing, just pointing to facts. Neither Big 12 team played their best and got beat but is that “exposed”? Not to me.

          • cpearc00 says:

If it only happened to one of the teams, I’d agree with you. It’s hard to argue for the Big 12 when two #3 seeds lost in the first round. So we can agree to disagree, I suppose.

          • Defend Colfax says:

            umm a 16 has never beaten a 1 so…

          • Brent says:

also the 1st round is the play-in game so that would be in even more bizarre for the #1 seed to lose.

          • Soonerfandave84 says:

Duke was a 2 and lost to Lehigh

          • Defend Colfax says:

            This is true

          • Soonerfandave84 says:

Im a Coach K fan but dont like Duke…is that normal?

          • Defend Colfax says:

Duke is just one of those teams, and basketball fans suck.

          • Soonerfandave84 says:

Good point,I bet lots of people think that about the fair-weather OU football fan out there as well

          • SCKSChief says:

Still cannot believe how poorly Baylor played in the final two minutes of that game…

Instead of running clock they miss a dunk, turnover an offensive board and then give up a huge three…in one possession!

    • boomersooner says:

what’s funny is they’ve all been down on mich st all yr, and now they’ve won a couple games in a row, we get to face em and it seems they all are gonna pick mich st not just to beat us but soundly. izzo is one of my favorite coaches, and all accolades he gets he deserves, but the waffling on the pundits part is very very comical. it just always seems like someone in the front office of espn must have had a kid get snubbed by OU and they’ve held a grudge ever since and ask all the bobblehead men that go on tv to ignore us

    • OU_Sooners says:

eh. I don’t necessarily disagree with them. OU has under-performed and has been underwhelming. Their best basketball is ahead of them, so no complaints from me.

  • Jordan Esco says:

    Whaley update added

    • Dustin says:

Answered my first question about how many backs we will take this year. My second question: Do you know if there is a pecking order with the offers or is it a “first come, only served” type of deal?

      • Exiled In Ohio says:

I would suspect there will always be a spot for Whaley. If someone else commits, they will shut down recruiting any other RB except Whaley.

      • Jordan Esco says:

My assumption is Whaley & Abdul Adams are the two guys at the top of their board right now. And I’d bet, yes, at least as it stands today it would be a first come, first served type of deal.

        • Tucker says:

I haven’t really taken a look at their tape. If you had to choose either of them who would it be? Just curious.

          • Jordan Esco says:

Would be perfectly happy w/ either, honestly. Think both are a great fit for what I presume Riley is looking for in a RB for his offense.

  • Bob Edwards says:

So Lon Kruger has taken four different teams to the Sweet Sixteen, in four different decades: Oklahoma (’15), UNLV (’07), Florida (’94), Kansas State (’88)

  • rphokc says:

…..what’s the tfb opinion of the mich st game……..would think the sooners are going to have to play the game of their yr to have a chance…….need big inside games from thomas/spangler

    • Jordan Esco says:

I think if they can limit that PG and at least somewhat contain/limit Valentine, assuming OU doesn’t just s#$% the bed there’s no reason they can’t win the game. Everyone nationally will fawn all over MSU & Izzo between now and then b/c that’s just what they do, but as an OU fan I wouldn’t have it any other way. The team will hear all week how no one is giving them any credit and, hopefully, come out and play w/ a huge chip on their shoulder.

      • Boom says:

Buddy needs to get more in the bucket. I wouldn’t say he’s in a slump but he’s not knocking it out of the park either.

        • Jordan Esco says:

Have always thought he’s a better player when he’s slashing to the rim, rather than simply relying on jump shots.

        • SamSooner says:

Everyone should be looking to shoot. That’s not the case. Too much watching from the team because their number is not called. Kruger needs to tell everyone, if you have a good look, take the shot.

      • Payton Glen Guthrie says:

MSU and Izzo have earned that fawning from the national media.

      • SamSooner says:

I see four things that have to change. Three of those OU must correct. If they do, they could take the whole thing. Here they are:
        1. Protect the ball. Ball possession is so important. You should never give up the ball without having taken a shot. Woodard doesn’t protect the ball and takes head-scratching shots.
        2. Get everyone involved. They are losing precious time on the clock because they are want specific looks, and specific people to take those looks. They have three legitimate scorers: Thomas, Cousins, and Hield. Hell, throw in Spangler and you have four. They are looking to get Hield and Thomas shots. That makes everyone else stand around. Not good.
        3. Defend. This team defends well but loses concentration sometimes which causes them to lose intensity.
        4. Officiating has to be fair and consistent. OU is getting short end too much.

        • SCKSChief says:

That string of 10 empty possessions in a row at the end of the 1st half vs Dayton was just…wow…

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

They need to get back to playing defense like they were midseason holding opponents to the second lowest FG%…maybe they will after yesterdays clamp down in the final 10 minutes…and that block might be what lights Buddy on fire for the rest of the tourney(we can hope).

That being said, going to need Cousins and Woodard to play well too. Rebound and play good defense and OU has the shooters to win their Regional

    • Jeremy Phillips says:

Oklahoma is the better team.. Still need to pay well but Oklahoma is better & should win the game…

      • John Garner says:

Sorry but “should win the game” is the phrase that invariably precedes a piss, poor performance. But I’ve been thinking that OU has been playing to the level of their competition in the first two games. If that’s right and we play to the level of MSU’s intensity then, I agree, we should win the game.

  • Jeremy Phillips says:

Practice is beginning again today right? Will you guys have any availability with coaches or players?

  • Mustvid says:

Maurice Chandler is a shut down corner at the JUCO level based on this Hudl video. He flips his hips with ease and seems comfortable playing off or press. He is also a very good tackler. I hope OU gets this kid. He could really help this defense next year.

    • Super K says:

I agree. He’s as complete as you find. Has a better size to speed ratio than OUs current DBs on campus and looks polished. That NEO DB coach is doing something right or else Maurice is getting private training.

      • Doobie74OU says:

Need to keep an eye on that coach for future employment opportunities if he is coaching them up that well!

  • Jordan Esco says:

update added – 2016 QB on campus today

  • BoomerDave says:

Just heard a nice interview with OL offer JP Urquidez on KREF. Very well-spoken young man. Has over 40 offers with OU in his Top 5. Sounds like Bedenbaugh and Riley working hard for him. Has made 3 visits to Norman already and planning to get back again this spring, perhaps for the Spring Game. One visit is the most he’s made to any other school. I’m liking our chances here.

  • Brent says:

I really hope he is the son of the Million Dollar Man.

  • Dustin Parish says:

I went by the stadium today during practice, and the team was wearing their black practice jerseys. They looked really slick. I would have to imagine once the coaches get used to them an alternate will be on the way.

  • Randy says:

Need more info on this kid, no offers ??

Re: Zach’s back problems: maybe he needs some physical therapy for re-alignment, learning to balance without all that hair. 🙂

  • OohRah Mama says:

WTH?! They’re showing Maryland/Princeton on ESPN2, not our Sooner gals.

    • Sooner Ray says:

It’s on an Alternate espn2 channel, at least on Dish Network. I was cussing for a couple minutes.

  • Sooner Ray says:

Women up by 7 with 6:53 left in first.

  • Sooner Ray says:

Ladies up 4 at the half.

  • EasTex says:

When will the Sooner gals leave the locker room, some imposters have taken their place.

  • EasTex says:

Unless the Sooners get on a roll this one is done.

  • Doobie74OU says:

Sad to hear about McNamara transferring, thought this offense may fit his skill level better than what we have been doing. I guess it leaves another scholly open for next year though!
