– Jean Delance: OU’s first commit of the 2016 class has certainly caused some angst among Sooner Nation as he (rightfully) continues to listen to other schools while also racking up additonal scholarship offers. But the simple reality of things is if you want early commitments, more often than not this is what you’re going to have to accept. And to his credit, Delance has never once wavered in his stance on things. He is fully committed to OU, but still listening to other schools. And as we’ve said here numerous times now, you may not necessarily like it but the young man would be doing himself a disservice if he wasn’t listening.

That said, I had a chance to catch up with him yesterday and while once again his message to OU fans has not changed, I figured it was still passing along for those of you who continue to worry. “I can’t wait to be in Norman and around my future teammates,” Delance shared with me, which doesn’t sound like a guy who is wavering to me. In fact, he has even recently reassured the OU staff not to worry about his commitment despite some of what is being said. He once again reiterated that he is a solid commitment to OU.

Now, is he planning a trip to LSU? Yes, that unofficial visit is in the works. But it’s also not out of the question OU will ‘wow’ him enough while he’s in Norman this weekend for Jr. Day that he decides no more visits are necessary. The one thing no one can deny, however, is the relationship he has developed with Bill Bedenbaugh and Bob Stoops. I asked him about both yesterday, “coach Bedenbaugh is probably the nicest guy I have ever met. Plus, he’s just a great coach.” Also adding about Stoops, “he is just real. Just a really cool guy that I have a great relationship with. Love talking to him. We talk every week.”

And prior to our conversation ending, Delance asked me to make one thing perfectly clear. So if you take nothing else away from this, listen to the young man himself. “I’m 100 percent OU. I’m not wavering at all.”

So, there you have it. Like I’ve stated on here numerous times, I know him better than any other person covering OU. He and I talk all the time. When I asked him to do an interview, he stopped what he was doing and made it happen, instantly.

We discussed his tweets about he and JP Urquidez being a package deal. And while that’s not exactly set in stone at this point, they do have two schools in common – OU & Texas. Delance told me his relationship with the Texas coaches ‘isn’t that strong,’ so it doesn’t sound as though — despite some recent interviews that may have lead you to believe contrary — there is much to worry about (for now) in that regard. – (Brandon)

* Delance Eval: The type of talent that makes things on film look much easier than they should be. If I had to narrow his game down to one word it would be ‘smooth.’ Looks like a smaller athlete playing in a big man’s body. At no point will he be ‘out-athleted’ at the tackle spot. Projects as a left tackle all the way for me. If there is one thing I look for in a LT, it’s the ability of a player to be technically sound. But when there is a mistake made, are they athletic enough to then recover. In in light of the rawness of his game, I see this ability in Delance.

He’s a natural knee-bender but like a lot of guys his height (6’5″), he has a tendency to play a little high at times. Still figuring out the hand fight aspect of his game, but when he is able to lock onto a guy he shows above average power. Steps with the wrong foot at times, but recovers effortlessly.  In my opinion, the only thing that will hold Delance back from being a great player is himself. If he’s willing to put in the time and effort to hone his craft, the talent is so clearly there. May need a year to redshirt, but following that I believe you’re looking almost assuredly at a future multi-year starter. – (JY)

– J.P. Urquidez: As Brandon mentioned above, Urquidez & Delance have created a bit of a buzz with their social media interaction talking about potentially being a package deal for some fortunate school. With that in mind and the fact that both prospects hold the Sooners among their top schools, we wanted to give you some insight into Urquidez’s game from our resident expert in the trenches.

* Urquidez Eval: Great size at 6’6″ 285 with very strong hands, seems to have a little bit of nasty to him. When technically sound, he is a very strong right tackle prospect. Has offers from all of the big boys and you can see why. Not as quite smooth as a Bobby Evans or Jean Delance, but that shows the differences needed from right to left tackle, athletically. Seems to still be both developing and growing. Can be a touch awkward at times, but as he continues to develop he will smooth off those rough edges.

Needs to work on pad level as he can be a bit of a waist bender at times. Takes good angles in his pass sets, but can have a tendency to drop his hands too low. This may be an issue when quicker DEs get a step on him, as they’ll be able to get on top of him before he can “reload” his hands. I’d like to see him cock his hands up towards his numbers and keep them stationary, rather than doing the ‘wax on, wax off’ thing I saw on the film of his I watched. Reason for that being he has very strong hands and a good punch that could be deadly as he refines it. Will need a redshirt year at the next level to gain strength and flexibility. But I love the hustle and work ethic yout see in his hustle and finishes.

Will end up probably growing another inch and filling out to most likely being about 6’7″ 320 or 330 at the next level. As he matures and gets his grown man body, he will be a beast. – (JY)

– 2016 QB recruiting: We know about Dwayne Haskins & KJ Costello, and we also talked at length yesterday about Mustang’s Chandler Garrett. But I wanted to touch on a couple of the other possible options should Lincoln Riley widen his search. And those names are Joshua Jackson (Saline, MI) and Micah Wilson (Tulsa, OK).

Jackson really started to come in to the picture more recently and heard from Riley yesterday for the first time. His film screams offer to me, and I’m of the opinion the OU coaching staff agrees. He seems to have everything Riley would be looking for in a QB for his system, namely a high football IQ and a strong arm. When I saw his film, I immediately thought of Donovan McNabb. And it wasn’t just because Jackson also wears No. 5, but more so his frame and just his overall approach to the game. Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if an OU offer came relatively soon.

Meanwhile, Wilson is obviously a local product and a name some of you here have even mentioned as someone OU should be looking at. I’ve even spoken with a source that knows the QB position incredibly well, who even went so far as to suggest the name Sam Bradford when discussing Wilson’s game. Much like the former OU Heisman winner, Wilson’s arm may not ‘wow’ you but his ball placement is consistently near perfect. And you know as well as I do, in the style of offense we’re expecting Riley to run you don’t always need to have the strongest of arms. We’ll see how OU and Riley choose to proceed going forward, but I have it on good authority Mike Gundy is a big fan and an offer from Oklahoma State could be coming soon.

As to the QB position as a whole in this 2016 class, at this point it seems pretty clear that Dwayne Haskins Jr. is at the top of OU’s board. KJ Costello is probably not that far behind, but the general assumption is he’s not leaving the west coast so OU doesn’t appear to have much of a shot here. And after those to it would appear as though things are pretty much wide open. As you know by now, Chandler Garrett will be in Norman this weekend and could very well come away with an OU offer depending on where Riley has things lined up on his big board. If I’m guessing, behind Haskins/Costello, I’d say Riley has the guys mentioned here in the following order: Jackson, Garrett & Wilson. But we should know a lot more coming out of this weekend, and certainly in the weeks/months to follow. – (Brandon)

– UPDATE (9:55 am): Just in case any of you weren’t already aware:

We’ll have our usual Bob Stoops Presser live thread up as usual to recap things for you as they happen if you’re not able to watch/listen along live.

– UPDATE (1:26 pm): Per a source, Oklahoma is expecting to receive a visit from recent Notre Dame grad transfer, Matt Hegarty. We have been told the now former Irish offensive lineman is expected to visit three schools, one of which will be OU. Hegarty started 11 of 13 games at center and guard for the Irish this past season. – (Brandon)

– UPDATE (4:21 pm): Sooners have offered 2016 ATH & TCU commit, Sewo Olonilua (Kingwood, TX)

I am hooked on this page. Lol

    • Jordan Esco says:

      And for good reason 😉

Nobody else seems to have much in the way of info blaming it on being “a slow time of year” (and it is, to be fair), but here TFB is cranking out 1,500+ word Open Posts on a random Thursday.

      • Lincoln Hawk says:

Do you know if you guys will have an updates as practice goes along or will the staff keep a pretty tight lid on things? I am (as I’m sure everybody else is) interested to hear anything about the offense being installed.

        • I’m sure we will have some info. Can’t really guarantee a ton, as OU is pretty tight with their info.

        • Jordan Esco says:

We have every intention of bringing you as much as we can but, yes, the OU coaches will do everything they can to prevent that from happening (as they always have).

But I’ve always found that whole deal to be a bit of a slippery slope. I mean I want to know as much as I possibly can just like a lot of you, but at the same time how valuable is second and/or third-hand information?

          • Bob Edwards says:

There is also the fact that how many years have we had the next great ___ in the spring game only to have that player never show up in a game during the season. The best players often are limited to avoid injuries. Etc. etc. etc. Its all interesting, but it does not tell us a lot about what will happen during the season. Of course the only other things that can happen this time of year are collecting points for the Fulmer cup so it is definitely better than that.

          • Jordan Esco says:

            For sure.

While I and others may choose not to believe anything the coaches are telling us, that doesn’t mean we should deprive those who do still want the information. And that’s the approach I will take both here and on Twitter.

          • Bob Edwards says:

Yeah I think most of the time what the coaches say is like the pictures of the super models that have been Photoshopped. The truth is in there, but there have been so many filters applied to it that you might not recognize the real photo if you saw it. I think I am pretty good at decoding it, but I can understand why others don’t even bother. Even when you have decoded it you cannot be real sure you have the correct picture.

      • Andy Sundborg says:

I have to admit when I first heard about you guys in 2013 I was skeptical, thinking who are these guys? But clicked on it and started reading items such as JYs quarter by quarter breakdown and thought wow these guys are awesome and you guys just keep getting better!

        • Jordan Esco says:

And we definitely appreciate that. Hell, I was skeptical before I came on board as well. But couldn’t be happier in my decision to do so, both b/c of the guys I’m working with AND b/c of all the great readers we have here and the community you all are building.

    • Thanks for reading our site! We are nothing without our readers!

      • Jed says:

Now, now. I’m sure your momma would love you just the same even if you didn’t write for a kick azz web site.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Totally addicted. Anyone know where the closest rehab center is?

  • Soonerfan24 says:

Great OP! Is OU is in the running for any big names transfers this year (Matt Hegarty or EJ Levenberry in particular)?

    • Jordan Esco says:

Unless something has changed, OU was not interested in bringing in Levenberry (but, again, that could have changed b/c this is coming from back when he first announced his transfer).

We’re looking into the Hegarty thing to see if there is any interest on either side of things.

      • Soonerfan24 says:

Thanks! I’m kinda surprised we’re not after Levenberry given our LB depth, his skill level and the fact that Kish already has established a relationship with him

        • Jordan Esco says:

As was I at the time, especially given OU’s previously relationship w/ him after recruiting him so heavily.

        • Jack Wood says:

Hegarty was recruited to ND by Cooks if I am not mistaken. Would be nice to have an extra lineman with experience.

  • Sam Philbeck says:

Jackson reminds me alittle of Bridgewater as well.

  • ouwooferman says:

Do you consider Bobs Presser a bit unusual for this time of year? any rumblings on the reasons????

  • Soonerfan24 says:

This is random, but we are so lucky to have Bedenbaugh. He’s an ACE recruiter and an excellent teacher of the game! Hope we can keep him in crimson and cream for a long time

  • vargo05 says:

If OU gets involved with Joshua Jackson, I’ll try to get over next season and get some game video for y’all. Just under 2 hours, so not a bad trip.

  • MrBigsby says:

What school does Micah Wilson play for?

  • Jason Vos says:

I like the Joshua Jackson kid, however the local kid Micah Wilson only completed 58% of his passes last year. This throws up an immediate Trevor Knight type red flag for me.

Lincoln Riley is looking for pass first/accurate QB’s, and 58% completion is just not good enough. On the other hand Joshua Jackson had a 67% completion last season. 64% or higher would be the most ideal for a QB in the Air Raid System.

    • Soonerfan24 says:

I’m really starting to think yards/attempt is a better metric than completion %. You could have the same QB in two different offenses have completely different percentages based on if he throws lots of deep balls or bubble screens in a game. Not saying this is the case with these two QBs though

    • Bob Edwards says:

Would have to look at his WR corps before you make that determination coming out of HS though. Bradford was 56% his junior year (and only improved to 59% his senior year) yet he was one of the most accurate college QB’s around. Could be a lot of dropped balls in there.

      • Jason Vos says:

There are always a few exceptions to the norm. But for the most part a players completion % in HS tells a lot about the accuracy of the QB moving forward

        • Bob Edwards says:

Yep but we are talking the evaluation of an individual here. Statistical models no matter how valid don’t tell you anything about an individual. We will probably only sign one QB this year so statistics don’t help us. We need to evaluate them as individuals and not based on probabilities. If we know there are exceptions then we have to evaluate them for exceptions.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

The evaluation is closer to an NFL combine than stats and the opposition the hs qb faced. Does he make the throws? How’s the motion? Feet? Windows? I am just bothered that a top 5 QB is not on our radar.

        • He plays for a small private school. His receivers and OL aren’t exactly top notch. The source I quoted that compared him to Sam is about as good as it gets. You can argue it all you want, but Mcah is going to be a high D1 prospect before its all said and done

        • brainpimp says:

No, it doesn’t. it doesn’t take many factors into account such as Wr’s. oline play, competition etc. It’s an incredibly simplistic way to evaluate a qb.

      • Brien Brown says:

Bob this Jason dude is obviously a QB guru so let him preach to us uneducated fans that don’t see the big picture. Brandon and you both hit in on the head a kid may not have solid WR’s or O-Line play and their numbers look worse than they are.

    • J.r. Kamm says:

Did you seriously just upvote your own post?

      • Brien Brown says:

Yea cause look at his above statement he is so logical and knows who will easily be our starter next year just by the players HS numbers in a said offense. So he is so sure of himself why not upvote his own post cause he is cool like that.

  • Cush Creekmont says:

Since info from practices is so hard to obtain, I think TFB should get a few video helicopters and send them over…:)

  • Jason Vos says:

Baker Mayfield will win the QB job easily this coming season. Completion percentages in HS

Baker Mayfield (65%) running Air Raid
Cody Thomas (63%) running Air Raid
Justice Hansen (58%) I believe Air raid as well
    Trevor Knight a laughable 54%

This will be a no contest competition. Baker Mayfield will be the starting QB in 2015, and his back up will be Cody Thomas.

    • Jed says:

Bob sends his thanks. Now that that’s been settled, he can move on to more critical matters.

    • Jeff says:

Just hope Baker doesn’t get hurt

    • ouwooferman says:

I fear Trevor’s injury will continue to haunt him (mentally if not physically). So this post is not too far off.

    • nicjams says:

Easily? Now that’s laughable. All of those guys can play.

    • OU_Sooners says:

This is where development comes into play– depends on who the QB coach is. Trevone Boykin couldn’t throw a simple out route before and then you saw what he was able to do this past fall. I’m not saying that Mayfield won’t play, but football is all about being put in positions for success.

    • boomersooner says:

what’s laughable is you chose the word laughable. a grown man trying to demean a kid…

    • Brien Brown says:

No problem with your logic of looking up their stats, but, that’s against HS teams, not D1 schools also part of the problem with that is some of these Kids played in different offenses and different classifications of one another. Baker Mayfield is the logical pick due to the fact he played for Tech so what, he also threw what 7 picks, and what was it like 4 lost fumbles hence why he lost the job at TECH at TECH, does that excite you? Thomas played in a Offense where his own coordinator didn’t know what to do and without the teams best WR. Knight is no way my pick and think Hansen is better than you know and believe he is and Thomas is not as bad as you would like to think. I’d look like a stud if I was Mayfield against our scout team if I was throwing the ball to DGB also. Take that in consideration before you crown someone with your HS comparison numbers.

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Thomas had every opportunity and made us one dimensional. He couldn’t even connect on a swing pass to the RB.

        • Brien Brown says:

Ok so you want to base a kids performance off a few games so my logic that Mayfield won’t be good is based off the logic that he displayed at Tech throwing 7 picks and got benched at Tech. Thomas didn’t have the talent around him to be successful and they asked him to be a dual threat QB when he was a throwing QB in HS and that’s what he wants to do is throw. You better believe that Thomas will make it a closer battle than you “experts” think

  • Drew says:

Huh. I liked Jackson and Wilson a lot, but I came away with some different things than you did. For Jackson, really like his short and mid range ball, but I actually thought his arm strength needed some work; he was really pushing those out. Wilson, on the other hand, showed better arm strength imo, and he dropped a few long range dimes that were simply beautiful. He also seemed a more Knight-esque runner, while Jackson looked a bit more like Bell.

    • The deep out is where I’m talking about with arm strength. Jackson seemed to make that throw effortlessly. Micah places his passes with precision. I love that about him. Especially, his deep passes. His deep outs don’t have the zip that Jackson does. I love Micah’s mobility, as I stated. I see your Knight-esque runner comparison. I likened Jackson to Mcnabb because Donovan was a straight line runner, good footwork and agility in the pocket. Once he breaks out of the pocket, and starts running, he doesn’t have a lot of juke in him. He is all power, for the most part.

      • Drew says:

I guess that’s a good way to compare them: Jackson is strength player, Micah is a finesse player. At that point, it’s really personal preference.

        • Which do you like better?

          • Drew says:

I really like the touch Micah puts on the ball, they seem like they’re really easy to catch every time. And a few of them are just beautiful throws. Jackson seems to have a bit of a problem (not much) with accuracy, throwing behind his guy quite a bit. His long range balls also seem a bit less effortless to me. So overall, I think I prefer Micah, b/c accuracy has been our biggest issue lately, and he has that in spades.

I actually can’t rewatch the tape right now, I’m in class, but that’s how I remember it anyway.

  • Jeremy Phillips says:

I liked the jackson kids film better.. He doesnt have many offers though.. I like Wilson’s size & arm but level of competition is a question.. Will either be attending camps this summer OU or any national QB camps.. Just to see how they stack up with other QB’s nationally..?

  • Jonathan Taylor says:

Really like Wilson and Garnett, but not a big fan of Jackson and comparing him to McNabb the choke artist doesn’t do him any favors for me. Wilson and Garnett seem IMO to make better reads while Jackson has pretty much one read and run. Never been a big fan of that mindset for a QB that is going to transition to the college game, but I understand that there are times when it’s called for. If you were to ask me who I’d rather see offered? It’s Wilson and Garnett hands down. In-State first.

  • Sooner 76 says:

Thanks for the update on Jean Delance. I don’t have a problem with his visiting other schools. As you said, he owes it to himself. Players should enjoy the process; it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

My opinion is that the only rule in the recruiting game is honesty–from both sides.

  • KJ1123 says:

I like that Urquidez kid. I agree with the above observation. He plays high, doesn’t look thick in the lower body so may not be too strong in the legs. Footwork needs a little work technique wise. But man is he explosive. He fires his hips well and gets that pop at the p.o.c. Good active hands too and good size. Losing a few more OLs this year, so another good OL class is a must.

    • Drew says:

Same. I noticed how on essentially every play (at least the pass pro ones, don’t remember about the running) he was the first guy off the ball. We can teach him the technique, but you can’t teach drive, and he’s got it.

  • Chris White says:

I wish Mason Fine was just a little taller, he has great throwing mechanics, accuracy, velocity and can run. He will probably end up at a small school because of his height though but he’s another good OkPreps player

  • Bob Edwards says:

Since I am stuck at home because of the ice storm in Alabama, a second interesting stat of the day:

Last year ECU had 4835 yards passing compared to 2646 for OU.

ECU started a 2* QB and two unrated WR’s

OU started 4*s at all positions.

    • JD says:

As I have been saying since the beginning of the hire…this offense is very qb friendly…I am not worried at all about the qb position (or wr for that matter)…both TK and for sure Thomas will be ALOT more efficient in this system from a passing standpoint

      • Bob Edwards says:

I have just been surprise dhow much more he has been accomplishing with so much less to work with. Either his system is way better than what we have been running or he is a lot better at identifying and developing talent or both. His leading receiver last year had one D-II offer, walked on at ECU, and ended up breaking Ryan Broyles record for career yards.

        • SoonerGoneEast says:

It’s also worth noting their SOS was considerably lower than ours. Not to take anything away from Riley, but it’s not exactly an apples-to-apples comparison. Hopefully though, his abilities translate the same at this level as they did at ECU.

          • Bob Edwards says:

            Fair enough

          • JD says:

They still scored in the 20s against teams like VaTech SCar and Florida …all teams with superior talent on the field…with our talent we should be able to put up good numbers and compete “in a good way” (had to put that in lol)

  • j l says:

What ever happened to keaton torre? I remember his name being mentioned a few times last year as a QB target, but nothing as of late.

  • KJ1123 says:

Just thinking about what Coach said about Anderson. The team has a great looking backfield. Samaje may not repeat the same stats he had from last year because of the RB group. However, all these weapons in the type of Offense Riley runs means OU may have another record breaking season imo.

    • JD says:

Yeah hopefully our Offense can compare to the 08 team (stat wise)…We could very well have two 1000 wrs and a 1000 back…heck if they forced the issue we could have a back have a 1000 running and receiving

  • Jeremy Phillips says:

Put me down as an Abe Anderson fan… I know it’s probably the lazy comparison.. But i see Austin Box in that kids film..

A driving freezing rain storm with thunder started about 6pm Wed, followed by several sleet storms. That was the base, then in the span of about 4 hours got 3-5 inches of snow on top. It was grim this morning, but when the sun came out it started melting quickly even though it was still in the mid 20’s. Got home about an hour ago and it has mostly melted, but there will be some slick spots in the am. Nothing but sunshine and mild temps from now on, spring is only 14 days away.
