Some Thoughts On OU vs. Texas Tech

Image via Norman Transcript

OFFENSE

* I couldn’t help but laugh at the tweets regarding Baker Mayfield’s ‘pedestrian’ performance that popped up in my timeline as the game was coming to a close. As though he would have had to throw for 400+ & 5 TDs to exact this stupid revenge the media spent all week talking/writing about. His team won by five touchdowns, I’m gonna guess that’s all the “revenge” he needed.

* So Samaje Perine is still pretty good, huh? Oh and Joe Mixon isn’t too shabby himself. And as much fun as that was, if you’re being honest with yourself then you have to at least acknowledge the quality — or lack there of as it were — of defense OU faced on Saturday.

Which IS NOT to say there is nothing positive to take away from putting up 400+ yards on the ground. The offensive line did play well, maybe even as well as they have all season. But at the same time I think you’d be kidding yourself if you came out of that game thinking that everything is now all fixed up front.

Again though, there were definitely some encouraging signs. In particular I thought Dru Samia played an excellent game.

* But back to Mixon real quick. He’s certainly made some plays in previous weeks, but this was really his true breakout game I thought. There were several impressive runs, but that one for his first TD I think where he just froze No. 18 for Tech in his tracks was pretty filthy.

Have always LOVED the idea of he and Perine on the field at the same time, and am thrilled we’re finally starting to see more and more of it.

* Obviously OU’s success on the ground played a significant role, but it was still kind of shocking how little of a role Sterling Shepard had in this game. Just two catches for 50 yards and it felt like he wasn’t even targeted for the longest time. Certainly nothing to worry about, more so just one of those things that kind of stood out for me.

* We might not see Jarvis Baxter again for a while.

* Much like Mixon, would really like to see an effort to get Dede Westbrook in space a little more often. He seems tailor made for those short crossing routes mismatched on an opposing linebacker. Even those quick screen passes, anything.

* I guess it’s hard to complain when all Mark Andrews seems to do is catch touchdowns, but how he isn’t a fixture of this offense is beyond me. That one, and only one, catch he had for said TD was the perfect illustration of just how easy it is to get him matched up on a LB and/or safety who stands almost no chance of defending him. But what do I know.

DEFENSE

* Thoroughly impressed how effective OU was getting to Patrick Mahomes in this game and, of course, forcing those four interceptions.

* This really isn’t relevant to Saturday necessarily, but take a minute and think about the defensive line talent OU is returning next year. It’s pretty ridiculous. So much so I’ll be pretty disappointed if they don’t go back to a true four man front, if for no other reason than to be better able to rotate all those guys through.

* Given the nature of ankle sprains, I don’t know that it can be considered good news per se. If it was going to happen, it obviously could not have happened at a better time considering OU’s next two opponents (Kansas & Iowa State). I’d expect/hope OU sits him for those games in an effort to try and ensure he’s as close to, if not at, 100% by Baylor.

* Help me understand why Will Johnson wasn’t playing prior to last week?

* Charles Walker is a freaking beast. That is all.

* I thought Frank Shannon looked expectedly somewhat rusty, but was happy for him when he was right place-right time for that INT.

* This is simply a pet peeve and spare me the ‘Stoops always leaves his starters in’ nonsense. Steven Parker, arguably your best defensive player, still being in the game with under two minutes to go in the fourth quarter when you’re up 63-27 is f’ing idiotic. Kahlil Haughton had played earlier in the game when things actually mattered, but with a five touchdown lead you’re suddenly not comfortable enough to run him back out there? Please.

SPECIAL TEAMS

* I suppose odds were it was bound to end at some point, but given how solid Austin Seibert had been up to that point I definitely wouldn’t have expected a chip shot 32-yard FG to be the cause of it. Clearly played no role in the game whatsoever, nor do I think it has any impact moving forward.

* 0 punt returns, 1 kickoff return. Not exactly an eventful evening for the OU return teams.

* Jakeem Grant is one of the better return guys in the country, so it probably shouldn’t be a surprise or possibly a concern he caused OU’s kickoff coverage team some issues.

“* We might not see Jarvis Baxter again for a while.”
I thought this exact same thing when he did it. Stoops is pretty consistent when it comes to ball control.

    • thebigdroot says:

And I’m telling you Mahomes took a swing after Striker got the sack in the 4th QTR. It wasn’t at Striker, I think it was Dimon.

      • Oscar says:

Dimon kinda ground him into the turf. May have said something also. Matt, keep your emotions in the play, not afterwards!

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Can’t fumble like that. But Stoops is inconsistent because Mixon and Perine both fumbled at crucial times against Tulsa and were not benched. So it depends on your value and who is playing behind you.

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

We have Quick, Neal, Andrews, with Shep and Dede. But in my mind, Green, Mead, Baxter have fumbled or dropped too many passes. Where’s Smallwood and Miller?

      • SamSooner says:

The only difference is Mixon and Perine are your best options. I’m sure he’s not happy but who do you trust beyond those two?

      • ComancheJoe says:

I thought it was Cale Gundy that would bench the running backs when they had ball security issues? Maybe coach Boulware is not so quick to pull them out of the rotation.

      • soonermusic says:

It depends upon a lot of stuff, including ball security in practice, and track record on the field in games over time, as well as whether he thinks there were extenuating circumstances on a given play. If he has reason to believe it’s a one time thing, the player may not end up with extended bench time. It’s never been as simple as “he fumbled, you won’t see him for a while,” even if it often appears that way. But it’s definitely a major infraction.

    • brainpimp says:

Exact same thought popped in my head.

    • DrewChubbs says:

Stoops sounded none too happy at halftime when he addressed the turnovers.

  • Indy_sooner says:

Jordan, RE: Starters playing late-Noted greater emphasis on OU playing 4 quarters this year, regardless of who it is. I specifically noticed #10 play his tail off on the last TT drive. Not saying I agree or disagree, just that there’s been an effort to get key DB players on the field longer. It’s not a coincidence that we pull back the offense and leave those guys in. Methinks we’ll need that in Baylor/ TCU

  • Zack says:

FYI, I had to copy link from Twitter, the article doesn’t show up on the home page.

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Jordan, the o line is a work in progress still. I mean we gave up two more sacks. But at least we know that we can implement a short passing game to combat blitzes.

    • Chris White says:

True I don’t think anyone disagrees that this O line hasn’t reached their potential yet but yesterday was still a good game for them. Also one of those sacks I would put on Mayfield, holding on to the ball for to long and trying to run out of the pocket

  • Dick Bump says:

Nice to see the running game come on. We have some stud running backs and the o line is making progress. Great defensive effort.

  • Sooner Ray says:

KSU, TTU, KU, ISU, if your offense doesn’t look good in these games you have major problems. I was thrilled with the running game yesterday and hope Riley can continue to give these guys good touches. Loved the power. The o line group is probably the best we have right now and are showing some promise. Lack of Andrews in the basic offense makes me shake my head.
Defense was really good. Impressive tackling and tight coverage most of the day. Considering the injuries, I was real happy with the quality of depth.

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

I’m not sure why Baxter would not get to play for a while. Mixon, Perine, Westbrook, and Shep have fumbled the ball and missed no time. I don’t think he played Kalil Haughton because of a stupid penalty he got earlier. Or maybe he just didn’t want all young guys back there. I think not playing Andrews has to do with blocking. I don’t know what else it could be.

    • John Murray says:

Coach Cooks answered that yesterday with something to the effect, “most people don’t know or forget Andrews is second on the depth chart to Sterling”. So he isn’t a TE anymore? Confused.

    • brainpimp says:

Because baxter’s fumble along with numerous bad drops is hurting the team.

      • cullison says:

re the numerous bad drops: the “numer” I remember is one. Also remember that in the official stats Alexander is getting half his receptions because they share the #1.

    • Walter Sobcek says:

Andrews backs up Shep, which puzzles me, given the drops the young guys have had. Seems like having Shep and Andrews in at the same time would be very effective.

      • Ed Cotter says:

I would love to see Shep and Andrews in at the same time, especially in the red zone. These are two of our biggest threats in the red zone and at least one would have one on one coverage.

      • soonermusic says:

in case you missed it, on the coaches show last week, Gundy said that getting Andrews on the field more was a major topic, maybe the most discussed topic, in their meetings. That included working on packages with both Shep and Andrews on at the same time. Apparently they had a couple such sets that they were not able to use in previous games for some reason…at which point it starts sounding a bit like coach-speak, but I do have the impression they would love to get them both out there.

    • Billy says:

Mixon, Perine, and Shepard are huge parts of our offense and it should be obviously why 1-2 fumbles by them wouldn’t cause a benching. I do agree with Westbrook though. He seems to get open just as much, if not more, than anyone else. He has had some big plays. However, he has more drops and fumbles than anyone.

  • SoonerOracle737 says:

This offense is insane with having the ability to run the ball between the tackles. I think most of the ability to do so was attributed to the lack of quality of Dline play from TTU. But a good portion of it was our Oline doing their jobs and creating openings. It wasn’t against chopped liver. As for the WR’s, it appears no youngsters want to step up and be consistent catching the ball. The guys with the best hands (in order) are Shep, DeDe, Andrews, Neal, and then Mixon. Everyone else is not catching the ball when the lights are on and the tv cameras are rolling. We need guys like Dahu to catch the frickin’ ball and not let the big moment over power you. The young WR’s need to step up their game and focus on getting up to the ball and aggressively catching it. There will be games in November where we need a couple of catches from the third receiver to make the difference. They have to step up. But overall the team, and especially the defense – played great. I’ll take a game like that any day.

    • Scott Moore says:

I think Neal may be higher than De De now. And I would say Andrews has been fantastic but has had limited targets which to measure by. I think he will be consistent if they do go to him more. But I definitely agree with you. The young guys need to step up. At least one of them. And we will need them very soon.

  • JrsySooner says:

There are 5 guys on the o line…1 or 2 rbs what the hell is Andrews not in based on blocking that’s stupid…what you have is a shinny new toy with so many new cool pieces…Baxter will be back in next week doubt that one play counts against him . ..seeing Parker in there made think Stoops is Autistic or something good grief my parents should have been in there at that point and they are both deceased rip….man this team has a lot of potential it’s no wonder they are #4 in power index

  • hOUligan says:

Defense: thought Austin did a good job. 2nd leading tackler (11) with a pick. Was being targeted and more than held up one-on-one. That was a ‘veteran’ oline for TT and Walker and Tapper went off on them. IMO Shannon looked pretty good 1st game back. Leading tackler.

    • John Tolomeo says:

agree that he played well but being a leading tackler at corner is not usually considered a good thing.

      • Oscar says:

Tech is not a run offense, so it is a good thing with the spread.

      • hOUligan says:

Against a ‘traditional’ team, you’re right. Against a spread where he was 1-on-1 and being targeted, he did really well making those tackles. Had not seen/listened to Stoops post game but he even singled Austin out for his tackling ‘in space’.

      • cullison says:

Austin’s tackles (from a quick once-over of the play-by-play) were 12p, 6p, 6p, 6p, 18r, 20r, 13p, 8p, 4p and I didn’t find the other two. The 20 yard run was a break of containment up front that he had to chase down. On some drives Tech didn’t go his way at all – and they scored

      • Scott Moore says:

Sure tackling better than gambling and pushing the man toward the sideline when you fail. That was proven on Saturday.

  • james babcock says:

Jordan Esco touch on it a little about the the number’s up front but can somebody tell me why we aren’t seeing more of D.j Ward every time he is in there he makes big plays.

    • blaster1371 says:

Maybe coaches think Tapper is better against the run?Over the last few games Ward seems to be getting some of his aggressiveness back.

    • cullison says:

In general I agree with you, but he did lose contain on a long 3rd down yesterday, I think it was on Tech’s first drive of the 3rd Q, 3rd and 10 at our 48. Mahoney got 20 and they got a FG to make it 35-20.

  • Sooner Ray says:

    OU #13 in coaches poll.

  • SoonerinLondon says:

Wow. A lot of “but’s” in the thoughts this week.

  • Kyle says:

I disagree on resting Parker. He’s only completed his second game playing exclusively at safety and this is the last time our DBs will be tested by this level of passing game before Baylor, TCU and OSU. He needs all the reps he can get along with our young corners.

If we’re up a bunch against Kansas or ISU then I would agree with resting him but not against Tech.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

Tech is terrible on D. But aside from 2 turnovers the offense did what they should do vs an outmatched foe. They dominated. On D they tackled well and got some tip pass INTs. That’s how you beat the spread. Just need to keep improving. On ST the wind looked fierce on KOs in the direction of Seiberts miss.

  • Sarosh Nizami says:

Not that I think these various rankings are the end all be all, but I remember some time back some people on here complaining about ESPN’s FPI having an SEC bias as at that time the top 10 was littered with that conference’s team, many who weren’t really all that quality. Well here’s the latest rankings:

    #1 – Baylor (26.7)

    #2 – OU (24.6)

    #3 – TCU (24.0)

Not a bad showing for the Big 12 haha. Some other rankings of note, USC at #5 with that 4-3 record (which I do think is better reflection of their talent, as displayed against Utah), and Tenn at #12 despite the 3-4 record (again, I think a better reflection of how good they could be .. but maybe I’m biased because them looking good doesn’t exactly hurt us 😉

Here’s the full rankings if anyone is interested – http://espn.go.com/college-football/statistics/teamratings

    • cullison says:

So ESPN’s FPI predicts us to lose at Waco, win at Stillwater and have a .6 to .4 advantage against TCU at home. That’s EXACTLY what I expect unless Seth Russell’s head falls off. Then I give us a .4 chance against the Bears.

    • Walter Sobcek says:

Well, that explains why sec was so quiet about their FPI this weekend.

  • Hunter Frantz says:

Yeah Tech is awful on D but so was Tulsa and Akron is still Akron. So from judging those two games and comparing them to the last two, you can see that our line is getting much better at reaching their assignments.

  • Sarosh Nizami says:

A really good point by Stoops on Dakota – “Dakota I thought was awesome. He didn’t miss a tackle out there. All those one on one tackles aren’t easy when they throw the ball out there with all that space. I thought he really handled it great. My hat goes off to Dakota.”

Tech went after him early and often, and had he not made those clean individual tackles, their WRs may have gone off for longer gains, the offense would have gotten momentum, things could have swung a different way. I think that’ll be the key against the future spreads we face in our end of the year slate .. they’re going to complete passes no doubt, but it’ll be a matter of if our D can slow the receivers down and wrap them up in space (something that was clearly & obviously an issue in Dallas, but looks to have improved in the last 2 games)

    • hOUligan says:

The guy is ‘listed’ as 5’10 157# on the roster but used every bit of that making those tackles. No wonder his undershirt looked so baggy!! And that Int in the EZ was clutch and a great play the way he blocked out the receiver with his body and plucked the ball. Great positioning.

      • Brad Warren says:

Here is a pic of him on the interception. His undershirt is comically big!

        • Brad Warren says:

After I posted that it dawned on me that perhaps he wears that shirt for a reason. Sentimental, superstition or something else which makes it important to him. So while it may look silly, his on field play did not.

          • Scott Moore says:

I think it’s a rain type jersey. It looks like a windbreaker in this picture. I could be wrong.

    • Ed Cotter says:

His getting experience the next two games subbing for Sanchez will pay dividends moving forward. He did pretty well yesterday.

    • Scott Moore says:

Yes, and that’s what we had been missing. I’m starting to think safe is much better at the position. Keep the man in front of you and tackle. Rather than riverboat gambler looking for a pic and trying to push people out of bounce rather that stick em.

  • Sunshine the 2nd says:

Baker played a lot better than is being portrayed. 7 incompletions,, I recall 2 flat out drops & 2 great plays by the only Tech player on D that was worth a damn, the left corner.

  • Kevin Burger says:

Offensively, this is the game plan that I had hoped for, and hope we’ll see against Kansas. When a team can’t stop the run, run the ball. Even if they can’t do the pass either, IMO.

  • Brad Warren says:

A 63-27 crushing and still a comment with profanity lambasting Coach for having Parker in late. Really? That’s completely absurd.

  • Walter Sobcek says:

Agree about leaving starters in too long especially considering Sanchez is injured, which means you have to protect Jordan and give the backups more experience.

    • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

Giving the backups more experience is fine argument. Risking injury? Blah.

    • hOUligan says:

Injuries happen whether on the first play of the game, Sanchez, or the 4th quarter. OU has some youngsters that need game experience. Depth is the main reason I want the starters out by early 4th Q if the game is ‘out of reach’. At the same time, the starters, esp on offense, need to stay sharp in an offense that requires timing and reaction.

    • Jake says:

Stoops has been this way since he’s been here.
Griping about it at this point is tiresome. It’s what he does.
Everyone should be used to it at this point.

      • Walter Sobcek says:

We are used to it. Doesn’t mean we have to like it.

        • soonermusic says:

It’s pretty much standard practice everywhere in D1 football, he’s not an outlier as far as keeping starters in well into the fourth quarter. He subs them out at various times, but I think they were pretty shorthanded in the defensive backfield by the end of the game due to injuries. The list of guys hurt was pretty impressive.

  • Jason Vos says:

I just want to know what happened to Quick. He had been playing well prior to this game. And after Jarvis Baxter got benched for the fumble, I’d though we would have seen Quick in there

    • blaster1371 says:

I thought that as well. Mead is still unreliable as are some of the true freshman WRs. I really want to see what Quick can do when he gets the ball more often. Thought he also showed a good knack for getting open.

      • Brad Warren says:

I felt bad for Dahu on that dropped TD. Perfect throw by Baker.

        • rphokc says:

reminds me of todd a few games back when he gets his one chance and drops one that hit him right in the gut while he was wide open….don’t think he’s appeared since

          • Brad Warren says:

You’re right. I did see Todd in there with Trevor in mop up yesterday, but not at any point when the games were undecided, since the drop.

    • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

Good question. Last week, (was it last week?) Michiah had some sticky hands, played well.

    • Fear The Magic says:

I wanted to see more of Quick as well.

    • cullison says:

Check the highlight photos on the Official site. He’s celebrating a late Perineal TD in the end zone. That’s the only evidence I have that he appeared except on kick coverage.

    • Dick Bump says:

It was a running game. Sterling didn’t get a lot of touches. I think it was just the way the game went. Quick has been playing well.

  • OceanDescender says:

Too many disclaimers in this article for a game where OU scored 63 points and held a top spread offense to 27, I don’t care who the opponent is. That type of win deserves at least one day without complaints against Tech’s defense or a sophomore safety getting more experience against the spread.

    • blaster1371 says:

Preach it brother! Theses pups needed to taste blood and Parker needs as many reps as he can get.

      • OceanDescender says:

Completely agree, Tech was still slinging quick screens out there late and we’ll all be ecstatic about Parker’s extra spread experience when he’s making plays against Baylor and TCU.

    • CrimsonNative says:

I agree. This was a great win for these guys and I don’t think it’s good form to discount the ground dominance on Techs run defense. Perine and Mixon are hungry and it was thier hunger and drive that got those yards. Tech was in good position most of the time to make the tackle but good blocking and the determination to not go down is what got those yards.

      • OceanDescender says:

Right; I think Tech’s 120th or whatever ranked defense would’ve had any other big 12 running back tackled for a loss on Samaje’s first TD run. It wasn’t their horrible ranking that broke those tackles amazingly and scored a man-sized TD.

      Just Jordan being Jordan.

    • Stephen Dale says:

the only negative I saw yesterday was the run defense for the Sooners….Too many ypc for TT and loss of containment a few times ; otherwise, excluding Baxter’s fumble, it was an excellent performance against a dangerous opponent…………..

  • Bill Holder says:

Guess no commits for the weekend?

  • Jason Vos says:

    Any news on Frison?

  • cullison says:

About Mayfield, I think “his” interception was caused by a second receiver straying his route and bringing extra defenders into the space Baker expected to be clear for his real receiver. Certainly that’s what his sideline reaction (and that of the coaches) suggests.

As to Baxter, I’ll let the coaches decide because they see him work all week. In particular they see him block, and his pre-OU highlights showed tenacious blocking both on the edge and downfield.

The only negative plays I’ve seen by Andrews were one goal line play where he couldn’t get loose from the line and Baker got sacked and one against Texas where he became inactive in the end zone and Baker had to thread that great TD pass to the sliding Flowers. The only other thing I can think is that he’s got to pose a more credible blocking threat or else he’s as obvious a passing “tell” as St John’s right foot. All our other receivers block, so should he. (Alternatively, Riley might rather have a lesser TE in on play-action passes and faster WRs.)

    • Fear The Magic says:

Baxter losing that ball could have been a game changer ( if TT had even a decent defense ) however I can understand why he lost it. The tackler came up from behind him and punched it out. Baxter was focusing on the guys in front of him. It sucked but I dont think that he should get benched for it.

      • rphokc says:

at the time it just seemed like an unfortunate good play by the tech player

      • Boom says:

Baxter saw that guy the whole time and tried to get around him. TT guy grabbed Baxter while he had the ball like a loaf of bread. Easy punch out. Baxter hasn’t gone through the Smitty workouts so he will get better and stronger. However, he needs to realize this isn’t juco boys and ball protection is better than 2 more yards.

    • rphokc says:

      the cullison on oui?

  • CrimsonNative says:

This game showed that we have an offensive coordinator who knows how to use what the defense will give him and go with it. If the run is working, why try to sling it around the whole time? His game plan was solid. Run it and throw a few times down field for big yards to keep the defense honest. Love it!

  • DCinAZ says:

My take away from the game is while Tech’s defense isn’t very good, it would be bad news if our young O line wasn’t able to dominate in this game and they were. I’ve always believed that if you want a physical O line and toughness in the trenches, you need to run the ball and let your hogs put their hands on somebody. We did that yesterday and they seemed to be enjoying moving people around against their will. Good day for our youngsters on the line and glad to see Mixon moved from WR back to his natural position which is RB. As everybody saw, he’s dominant back there and I was giddy watching Mixon and Perine both shredding Tech yesterday. That’s the vision I always had of them being on the field at the same time.

    • hOUligan says:

Agreed +++ Your linemen get to be the hammer, attack and deliver blows rather than on their heels in pass protection. Think it was just what this line needed as did the backs.

    • soonermusic says:

“glad to see Mixon moved from WR back to his natural position ” He lined up at wide receiver quite a bit as well, as always.

      • DCinAZ says:

Yes and it’s a waste of time when we could have a WR out there.

        • soonermusic says:

It’s about match-ups. He can move from one position to the other without allowing the defense to adjust/sub. One of the biggest plays of the game was when his defender was overmatched and had to hold him on the two yard line to prevent a td completion.

        • brainpimp says:

Disagree, especially when he comes out of the backfield to split. Screws up defensive sets.

  • Zack says:

Been waiting for speights to commit. What’s taking so long…

  • Jpsooner23 says:

How about Mike stoops game plan? Against air raid, lowest point output of the year, with 3 defensive starters out.

Oh wait, we are supposed to hate him, I forgot.

Really though, it is encouraging to see that. Not Baylor, I know, but encouraging nonetheless.

    • Brad Warren says:

That’s the nature of the beast. He’s done a good job this year and our D is playing well. He got killed after the Tulsa and Texas games but never gets much praise. It’s really silly but reality and will never change.

      • Super Keith says:

Sadly, that’s true for every coordinator (and probably always will be). I’ve already see plenty of Riley hate…and the guy has coached a total of 7 games.

    • ccmosaic says:

Mike has done a great job this year except for the Texas game. Though I do have to admit the way we were tackling against Texas I am not sure Mike could have done anything different. We saw a little bit of the poor tackling Saturday in the second qrt. For most of the game though Saturday and against K-State the kids have tackled pretty well. It makes a huge difference when facing spread teams if you tackle well.

      • Super Keith says:

Which is why I was impressed with the way Austin played. He had several completions against him, but I don’t know that he missed a single tackle. Like you said, that makes a huge difference. Some of those tackles prevented very big gains, if not touchdowns.

        • Scott Moore says:

Exactly, and that has been one of my biggest pet peeves with Sanchez. But I will say, even Zach’s tackling has improved. I think this game proved that we are fine without him. And these next two games will be great experience for Austin and others. We definitely have talent back there.

      • Stephen Dale says:

the players have been afraid of Texas the past three years. Its also a talent matchup problem for OU. Texas is more talented at the LOS and in the secondary….

    • Hollerback says:

Mike ran a lot of 3-4 and 3-3, and played Frank Shannon. Those were good moves. If he had coached like that against texas (not getting so outnumbered in the box), I doubt we give up more than 10 points. He did bring in the 3-2-6 against Tech a handful of times, which TT saw, called an audible and gained big plays.

    • Golden Sooner says:

When coordinators are gettin paid that much money, I’m not going to pat them on the butt when they get torched by Tulsa and then get ran over by Texas, just not gonna do it. I will however, give them credit, when credit is due, and the defense had it going Saturday.

    • ATLJTB says:

And lowest passing output as well. To hold TT to 253 yds passing is impressive for ANY team.

  • Mizuno44 says:

Our performances are trending upward, and a pattern of consistency is developing in all areas (except costly turnovers). It’s a great time in the season to be seeing guys executing better, let’s continue building over the next two games. Let’s also root for Baylor, TCU, and OSU to stay unbeaten until we play each one of them.

    • tfb_fortyseven says:

Yes, I agree that turnovers are costly – in general. However, the two we inflicted upon ourselves were not costly for the game on Saturday. Those two turnovers were not really bad in lieu of the final score. Yes, it’s 20-20, and in a tighter game it may have been the difference, but not today. Against Baylor/TCU/OSU, this will probably hurt us to the point of losing.

    • DrewChubbs says:

That will be sort of tough to do. All 4 of those teams play round robin in November. At least one of those teams will have a loss by time we get to them, i think.

      • Scott Moore says:

I say Baylor and OSU losing helps us more than TCU losing. Since we get them at home.

        • DrewChubbs says:

I agree. But the way the schedule pans out, we get Baylor up first. They should still be undefeated at that point. Us knocking off a no-loss, #2 poll team will carry a little more prestige, in the national perspective. I do hope TCU manages to stay unbeaten until we face them, as well. Bedlam, well, everyone pretty much knows it’s records be damned for that one.

  • rphokc says:

anyone here able to see the steeler game………by stats, looks like lj’s not doing much, has 1 int and pitt is trailing

    • Brad Warren says:

No, I was surprised it’s not on CBS but have been following a little online. He was just charged with a 2nd int. which should’ve been caught by Antonio Brown. KC converted w a td, so it’s now 16-3.

    • Dick Bump says:

Kc16-Pitt 13, 10:13 left. Landry isn’t Ben but they look better than with Vick.

  • Sooner Ray says:

    OU #14 in AP.

  • roygbell says:

I get really tired of the 2nd guessing of every move this coaching staff makes. If they change something and it works then they get criticized for not doing it quicker. If, someone thinks a specific player needs more touches then they bitch about another star not getting enough touches. I have come to the conclusion that there are just some people on this planet who can never find anything positive to say about a coach or a team. In my mind there was not a darn thing about the way OU played offense or defense that justifies criticism. Anyone can find something here and there that could have been better. But, on balance it was a good game for the Sooners. I read lots of posts from OU fans leading up to the Tech game thinking this would be a close game. My guess is OU exceeded the expectations of most OU fans.

OU beat Tech 63 to 27 and had it not been for a fumble it would have likely been much worse. The team played pretty good in all facets of the game. They have improved greatly over the first seven games. They offense is coming along great. The OL is getting better. Perine and Mixon are the best tandem of RBs of the Stoops years and by the time they are done at OU just might become one of the all time best. The defense has made significant improvement from the start of the year as well.

    • Slim Sooner says:

Excellent post. I agree with every word. You said what I’m thinking, only much better than I could.

    • Scott Moore says:

Well, it sparks conversation doesn’t it? We’re always looking for perfection. We get too high and too low. We think we have the best ideas and know more than the coaches. The life of a fan. Got to love it!

  • Simon says:

As a SoCal resident Pac 12 fan, and a closet OU fan, the Sooners are a player or two from being the best in the country. That being said, those missing players could be on the team now..IMHO.

    • ComancheJoe says:

Come out of the closet man……….be loud and proud! I live in Southern California also. I grew up a Sooner and Trojan fan with no conflict of interest until the 2004 National Title game. I was so embarrassed by the outcome of that game that my emotions quickly turned to anger. I tossed all of my USC gear as soon as I got home from the viewing party and now revel in every bit of misfortune that the Trojans suffer?

They say that a person will suffer from buying a new car worried about when that first ding will happen and the best remedy is to just go ahead and give it a small kick somewhere. Siebert was bound to miss one sooner or later and the longer he went, there is a pressure that builds up. I would rather have had that first miss happen now and get the pressure off instead of at Waco with 30 seconds left and the game on the line.

  • Recondo says:

Glad to see you highlight Shannon. I thought he played well with the exception of two plays. In TT’s 1st drive he gave up a pass because he was out of position. On the 2nd, he got outrun and that is just a well drawn up play by TT. Otherwise, he was always around the ball, making tackles, and had that pick.

  • soonermusic says:

While it was expected to be able to move the ball, and run it in particular, against a somewhat suspect Tech defense, stopping the Tech hi powered offense is a whole different matter entirely. With many key players down with injury for all or portions of the game, the defense was remarkable. Tech is a “big play” offense, and they just didn’t have any. Without the gift of two very short fields, this game would have been totally ridiculous, and it was pretty much so anyway.

    • Sooner Ray says:

      I fully support the unrest.

    • Timber Moore says:

I knew the swagcopter would crash eventually

    • BleedCrimson says:

Wonder how much of that is reality. The story sounds a bit like a reporter with an agenda. Not that I care one way or the other, but seems there are a lot of “good” stories with little fact.

  • Hotrod33 says:

I’m liking the depth we have developed and it is paying off on defense. We just need to continue to improve and make those changes each game. We still need to work on getting off the field on 3rd down but it was a good overall effort to see us shut down TT offense to a point. As long as we can progress in the right direction we should be ok. These next two games will determine how focus we are since both are pretty bad.
On offense, I thought the line did a good job throughout the day. Yes, we all know it is tech we played, we you can run for over 400yds that’s pretty good. The line did something right. We have our two tackles for the next 3 yrs going forward. Let these two learn and grow whether we are winning or losing, let them get the playing time they need for next year. I think they will be pretty darn good by the time they leave OU. Even though SS didn’t have to be used a lot, I like that we could count on the rest of the core of WR’s to step up. It just feels like we haven’t really clicked yet on both sides and I hope that it does when we start at Baylor and all the way through the bowl games. I like the direction of how this team is playing.

  • Nate Broadus says:

Quibbling over Mayfield’s numbers after a blowout loss is sort of like saying, “ha, I made you use some energy” while you’re laying on the ground bleeding from your nose and mouth.

  • Walter Sobcek says:

    Has anyone looked at #10 Iowa’s schedule? It’s not even a cakewalk. It’s a cake spoon-fed.

    • rphokc says:

looks like they might have a straight shot at the playoffs if they win out thru the champ game……clemson has a great shot also

      • Austin says:

Yep, but if either Iowa or Clemson lose 1 game that’ll be all she wrote. They have to be perfect imo. Schedules are extremely weak.

        • Zack says:

Clemson might be afforded one loss depending on the way the rest of the teams play out. Clemson looks really good and I wouldn’t want to run into them again.

          • Walter Sobcek says:

Agree. Coach V has a nasty run defense. Hope the sec champ has to play Clemson in the first round if they get in.

    • lefty67 says:

Yeah, but not listed on that schedule is the CCG, where they’ll have to get by either Michigan State or tOSU, in all probability. Also, considering Iowa’s tendency to lay an out of the blue egg (esp. on offense), I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see Indiana give them all they wanted. He may not be terribly proficient on defense, but Wilson does know how to light up a scoreboard.

  • Reuben63 says:

Q overton looked really explosive and dominate when he go in the game. id like to see Q and Walker in there together. i think those two would create so much havoc. Im really not a fan of our 3-4 but since we don’t have any real DE’s i can assume thats why they switched back to the 3 -4. i haven’t been overly impresed with tapper at he 5 or 6 spot but i think he’s a decent 4. maybe move him to the 3 with walker/wade/romar at the 0-1 position and ward play the 5 with striker do what he does. i just hate to watch DL read all the time. i loved the Utah .DL even though they lost they where attacking USC o line almost every play.

  • SamSooner says:

Just started watching the game. I see that our favorite officiating crew, headed by Mike Defee, was calling the game.

    Eww!!

  • Jason Vos says:

    • Sooner Ray says:

He has a good start on the arms we require our RB’s to carry. 🙂

    • CWasha says:

Trevor has a teammate named David (DJ) Johnson. He’s a 6’4″ or 6’5″ WR. I was his AAU basketball coach this past summer. He’s a high D1 athlete. He has a few smaller school looking at him for basketball but I think he’d be equally good at football. Probably has a 35 inch vert and fast. I’m telling you with the proper coaching and development he could be a monster. He’s OU good as an athlete now.

  • SamSooner says:

I’m watching the game just now. All I can say is this team seems to have found some attitude. Orlando Brown is mauling people. Mayfield refuses to take s**t from anyone. Parker is flying all over the place. The DL is pushing the pocket. Wow!

  • CPSooner says:

Hopefully going forward we can find a way to establish a dime package with Sanchez, JT, Will Johnson, Dakota Austin, Ahmad Thomas, and Parker. Please don’t put Hatari in against Baylor. Not trying to be hard on the young man, he just has a hard time covering.

  • stan H says:

    Hope you’re right about Baxter.

    • Defend Colfax says:

He has shown some flashes. Baxter is a real hungry hardworking kid but I do think a year with OUr S&C could do him a world of good. Really good football player, he will do some more good here.

  • SamSooner says:

Welp, Golden is out at Miami.

  • Super Keith says:

Other than the fumble by Baxter and the interception by Baker, I can’t imagine anyone coming up with negatives after that game (unless you’re on staff and watching film, so that you can coach your guys to be better).

I don’t get the negative caveats after this one. Enjoy a quality win!

    • DCinAZ says:

Some people were complaining about the kick coverage that has been fantastic all year but I think that little #11 for Tech is just hella fast and a baller.

      • Rick says:

As good as he is, and he is good. With as many chances as we gave him, what 10 times, you would think he could break one or at least get a really good run back. I thought the coverage was pretty good.

    • Birddawg says:

I was negative only at the fact of those turnovers. They dominated the LOS on both sides of the ball. But they were careless with those mistakes. Could’ve been more of a blowout.
Going into Nov, we need to be more careful of the ball and keep the run lanes open

    • Recondo says:

Shannon gave up a pass in his zone on TT’s 1st series, missed FG, a handful of poor tackles, 2 turnovers, a couple of ridiculous drops. I’m not complaining by any means, just pointing out coaching points for the week. Great game on both sides of the ball.

      • EasTex says:

I thought at the time, and Coach Stoops mentioned it tonight, that pass in Frank’s zone was a good scheme by tech. Frank made his drop when his zone was clear and the receiver then ran through the open area. Frank was following his assignment, but that play never happened again.

        • Recondo says:

I’m no coach so you’re probably right. If so, the good guys fixed that issue quick and kudos to them for it. He also gave up a pass later but he just wasn’t fast enough. It was an obvious case of Tech getting the right athlete in space against our LB. Overall, I was very impressed our LB corps showed virtually zero dropoff in spite of injuries. Maybe the deepest position group in football IMO.

          • EasTex says:

I’m proud of the way they played. Frank admitted to having some butterflys and a rust, but got over it quickly. For not having any significant playing time in over a year he did a good job.
Our depth at LB and DL is the best in numbers and quality in a very long time.

  • EasTex says:

God Bless hambone694 for the OU highlights.
    https://youtu.be/VHXsn1Y_nms

    • Dustin says:

Striker’s pick was amazing. I remember Colvin making a similar play. And huge props to Dakota Austin for seeking out a man twice his size to block.

    • Defend Colfax says:

OUr RB situation is pretty nice. This must be how a bigamist feels. Joe Mixon’s wheelhouse is ridiculous for a redshirt freshman, his patience when running with the ball alone is phenomenal. Perine looks great slimmed down but I still think his future is a back that is 10lbs+ heavier. He has gotten a lot better at picking up the blitz if he continues that trend he is gonna get paid.

  • SamSooner says:

Mixon has developed some patience coming out of the backfield. He has those pitter-patter steps. That just freezes defenders.

  • Brad Warren says:

I’m obviously a Bradford fan and realize he’s struggling but #81 is killing him with drops. Game after game.

    • BleedCrimson says:

Yeah, I have Mathews on my fantasy team. He really needs to catch that for ME. LOL

    • ellisbr says:

if Bradford had a line and some decent receivers he could do great things in the NFL. He’s been running for his life since he came in and when he does get time the receivers do not help him out. that must hurt the confidence.

    • Walter Sobcek says:

Yeah, and he’s supposed to be their top receiver. It’s demoralizing. Austin Miles has some made some good grabs for Sam this year, but the rest of them are not getting it done.

    • Clint Lenard says:

Matthews has dropped more balls this season than most Junior High schools deal with in a decade.

And Murray…up the middle. Up the middle. Up the middle. Fascinating play calling by the offer dive genius.

      • Brad Warren says:

#13 dropped a td earlier. #86 just dropped a pass. Austin just dropped 4th and 9 pass which hit him right in hands. So frustrating.

      • Scott Moore says:

And Bradford takes all the blame from the announcers most of the time. They seem to expect and want him to fail.

  • Kevin says:

Blocking is getting better. Not perfect yet, but better. Loved that the game plan was tailored to the weakness of the opposing defense. Definitely once everything clicks for everyone it will let LR adjust much better. I like that LR will call the same play several times in a row if the defense isn’t adjusting to it, and that he will stick with the game plan even if a play gets blown up. In the last few years, the play-calling seemed a bit random.

Tackling is also much improved. Dakota had a tremendous game, hopefully he’s not too banged up. Hopefully in the next few games everyone will rest up and get healed in time for Red November.

  • Walter Sobcek says:

The Eagles just keep making one mistake after another. It’s hard to watch. Sam’s receivers don’t seem to get open much, and drop the passes when they do.

  • Walter Sobcek says:

Can’t ANYONE get open for the Eagles? This is ridiculous.

    • Sooner Ray says:

I voted but looks like Austin has a big lead.

    • Drew says:

Well, obv ESPN doesn’t want Samaje to win . . . they didn’t even show his 1st TD in his highlights.

    • SquidGiant says:

Just want to point out that despite you and someone else jumping all over me last week Evans remained questionable all week and didn’t play. Stoops has always (unless obvious, like a break) made guys questionable. There’s a difference between being a liar and using doubt to your advantage. I was just a little shocked at the way a couple if you came after me for mentioning a report I saw. I will go cast a vote for Samaje. He and Mixon were incredible.

      • EasTex says:

Honestly, I don’t know what you are talking about.

        • SquidGiant says:

That’s fine I was really just giving you a hard time. When I mentioned last Sunday that it was great to have Shannon since Evans was questionable, you and someone else mentioned that he was on the coaches show and thus must be playing against Tech. It’s fine though, that’s why I’m a follower but rarely comment, people start acting silly.

      • SoonerinLondon says:

Who cares about accurate injury information except Vegas? What difference does it make what is said during the week?

All that matters is that coaches say what the NCAA rules require them to say and then play the players on Saturday.

        • SquidGiant says:

See below comment. After Sanchez went out Tech targeted Austin consistently. They would gameplan to do the same thing to any backup. It’s called smart coaching.

          • SoonerinLondon says:

I don’t understand your point. My comment is about whether BS is miscommunicating about injuries.

All he has to do is meet NCAA requirements for injury information, no more, no less.

He certainly isn’t required to give details.

          • SquidGiant says:

Actually, that was the point I made originally. Don’t you think Kingsbury (not just Vegas) would also have liked to have accurate injury information on OU as well? “Questionable” is about as vague as the information gets…

          • SoonerinLondon says:

            LOL.

Actually, I think we must be in violent agreement, here.

          • SquidGiant says:

Just a pair of passionate Sooners. Again see below, much respect.

  • Sunshine the 2nd says:

Where’s Juaquin Inglasias, Manuel Johnson, & Jermain greshem when you need them? The Eagles receiving corp is crap.

  • SoCalSooner says:

Think about this offense if Mark Andrews replaces Baxter. Seems like a no-brainer to me. 2 smurfs in Shepard and Westbrook all over the field and then the big fella catching everything over the middle.

  • Tucker says:

Any word on reaction from the visits?

  • IslandersFan says:

Didn’t you see the Baxter fumble a mile away? Soon as he caught it I was yelling at the TV like a moron for him to Secure it. I feel bad for the kid, worked his tails off..but he’s a fumble waiting to happen.

  • William Ryan says:

Perine finally had his break out game, Mixon is our most versatile back since Murry, Shannon should be the starter for the rest of the season, and with the addition of the predator back next week this d is going to be scary.

  • Scott Moore says:

You didn’t say it, you swore off of it, so I’ll say it for you. Sterling Sheppard still doesn’t have a clue returning punts. He has sure hands but very poor decision making. This game he waved for a fair catch, then started to run when he figured out he could of grabbed 15 to 20 yards easy. Too late. I guess we don’t have anyone better? Sure hands over yardage? Or is it a bit of the cronyism? Sterling is one of the most important players on the team. Why risk injury and why not opt for someone not afraid to take those shots that are presented? Do we not have anyone else you can trust? I say the next two games would be perfect opportunities to hold try outs at the position.

  • Great post, Jordan. Agree with everything. OL played great. Our 63 points did not mean near as much to me as our holding their offense to 27. They have a great offense. I agree on Johnson – why was he not playing earlier? Maybe some stuff like being on time or something. For me now, the next two games are the most important. Do not play down to the level of competition – and vs Iowa State it could get you beat. Hopefully we will continue to play every game with the same intensity – like Baylor does only better.

  • OUknowitscomin says:

    “* I guess it’s hard to complain”
Lol. From a 63-27 win, my count has 9 negative points & 8 positive points in your post with many of the positive points, also containing a caveat of negative counterbalance.

Progress…I guess. Hate to see what a non dominant win would bring….wait.

Don’t expect or want all sunshine, always things to improve on & point out. But when they outweigh the positives in a game like this……’here’s your sign’

God bless you for trying though. I’m patient & not expecting immediate results, just like with team. 😉

  • Waldo says:

I’m late to this discussion, but I just watched the highlights. Did anyone notice that Baker got a block 40 yards downfield on Mixon’s 45 yard run? 14:36 mark of the 3rd quarter, look at the left hash mark (20 yard line).
