Some Thoughts On OU @ K-State

Image via NBC Sports

I’ve been told I am being called out by some commenters, which gave me a little chuckle earlier today when I heard about it. So thank you for that.

OFFENSE

* Hallelujah! So many of the things I, and many other OU fans, have been begging for from Lincoln Riley and this revamped Sooners offense.

Tempo, check.

Short, quick throws to get guys in space, check.

Attacking the edges both on the ground and through the air, check.

It was all there on Saturday and it was an absolute pleasure to watch this offense humming at a breakneck pace. I don’t know why it took until after a loss to really see it, but frankly at this point I don’t really care. Not to get us off on a tangent, but I tweeted this yesterday during the game and meant it.

At this point it’s about what you do moving forward, no point in looking back. Which certainly isn’t to say I believe this team’s issues, be it on either side of the ball, are no magically all fixed, but it serves zero purpose to discuss why we didn’t see this OU offense against Texas. Rather whether or not we’ll see it this coming Saturday against Texas Tech, or Baylor, or TCU.

* Was definitely encouraged by some of what we saw from the OU front on Saturday, but the offensive line is still very much a work in progress and at the midway mark of the season, there is equally as little reason to believe that’s going to change anytime soon. Short yardage conversions have and continue to be an issue for this program. Maybe that comes back to bite them at some point, maybe it doesn’t. Regardless it’s absolutely something for Riley and Bill Bedenbaugh to continue working to remedy.

* I also said something to this effect on Twitter following the game, but just 13 touches for Samaje Perine in this one seemed a tad on the light side for my liking. I get a lot of that was dictated by the game plan and what was working, but I’d still like to see a little more of a concerted effort to get him involved.

* On the flip side of that coin, LOVED what Riley did with Joe Mixon. Can he lower his head and run over guys? Yes. We saw it on Saturday as well as other games this season. But where this kid truly excels is in space. Swing passes, jet sweeps, hell even the Wildcat, I don’t care just get him the ball in space and good things are bound to happen.

* Just the one catch for Mark Andrews, granted it was a touchdown, but he’s another guy I’d still like to see get more involved with this offense. I really liked the idea of what they tried to do one time in the red zone, where they basically just threw up a jump ball for him. But it looked to me like Mayfield just needed to get the ball up a little higher and I think Andrews comes down with it. Still though, credit for trying. That’s all we can ask, right?

DEFENSE

* How can you not be impressed with a shutout? Yeah, I get Kansas State’s offense isn’t the best but it’s still a shutout. They are far from common in this league, so frankly I don’t really care who they come against.

* I don’t know enough about Kansas State’s offensive line to say whether OU’s incredibly impressive performance along the d-line is entirely to their own credit, a product of the Wildcats ineptness, or somewhere in between.

But even with that said, I still think you have to be very encouraged by what we saw on Saturday. There was virtually zero drop off from the first to second unit and, honestly, there might even be an argument to be made the second unit outperformed the starters. The trio of D.J. Ward, Charles Walker, and true freshman Marquise Overton played exceptionally well in my estimation.

* Safe to say the move of Will Johnson into OU’s nickel package was a good one. The JUCO transfer played a very solid game and was routinely in position to make a play on the ball in coverage.

* Sticking with the secondary, the light certainly appears to have come on for Jordan Thomas, huh? And Zack Sanchez just makes plays in Manhattan, plain and simple.

* I don’t believe Jordan Evans’ knee injury is expected to be significant, in fact the impression I got during the game was he could have probably returned if need be. But that will hopefully be something addressed in Stoops’ presser on Monday.

SPECIAL TEAMS

* Mr. Reliable was his usual self. Some minor issues I thought on a couple punts into the wind, but nothing to be concerned about. I had no issue with Stoops going for a fourth down at one point in the first half (if memory serves) for what otherwise would have been a 48-yard field goal. But I’d be lying if I said there wasn’t a part of me that had hoped Stoops would have let Seibert — with the wind at his back, mind you — line that one up just to see the freshman’s leg/accuracy.

* I swore I wasn’t going to bitch about OU’s punt return team, so here is where I would have but now won’t.

* No fumbles on kick return, but also still nothing of note from Alex Ross in that department. Granted, his opportunities were extremely limited in this one what with the Wildcats failing to register a single score but also not something out of the norm for Ross thus far this season.

Really would like to see more of those quick screens out to Westbrook and Quick. They’re both a threat to score every time they touch. Need to keep getting DJ Ward and Overton reps. They both looked good

    • Tim A says:

Quick has shown very good hands this year – his supposed weakness. Reward him with more touches.

  • kt-raida says:

Overton,Ward and Walker was definetly noticeable on the field I think we can make some noise this year, but 16 will be THE year.

  • Zack says:

I think they need to get perine the ball in space too just like mixon on the swing passes and screens. That pass perine caught and took 12-15 yards was quick and will hopefully make defenses line up to contain the backs, that in my mind may open more running lanes between the tackles…just a thought.
But you (Jordan) or someone I follow on Twitter posted that “mayfield ain’t about that check down life” which is so true. I like that he keeps his eyes down field and has been taking care of the ball so far but it would make life easier if he hits those backs for a 5 yard pickup.

    • Exiled In Ohio says:

I”m guessing Samaje is in the doghouse over his blocking. He hasn’t played all that much the past two weeks.

      • Jpsooner23 says:

I think this week was more about keeping health. No reason to put him out there in second half as out of hand as it was.

  • Glocal Sooner says:

Incredible bounce back domination. That said, not sure what KSU was trying to do on offense. That was horrible. If we do that against Tech, KU and ISU then we’re talking. Completely agree with your comments on offense. Incredible job all around. Still concerned about the OLine and lack of run lanes. Hopefully that gets fixed soon.
If there’s one coach in college football that I don’t take pleasure in humiliating, it’s Coach Snyder. Classy guy and great coach. Hate that they didn’t show up.

  • Dick Bump says:

Best game we’ve seen in a while. Both sides of the ball played great.

  • Glocal Sooner says:

Thought you guys might appreciate this. I have a friend who posted this on FB last night.

“I have been an Ole Miss fan for over 35 years. I will be an Ole Miss fan until my last breath. Having said that, I think today is the most disappointed I have ever been as a Rebel fan. Today I realized that I had been fooled into the highest expectations I’ve ever had for my beloved team. Today I realized we will never be an elite team. It’s okay. I just have to lower my expectations and go back to my former way of thinking. Expect 5-8 wins a year and occasional finishes at the lower end of the top 25. Frequent bowl trips to Memphis and Shreveport. But hey, the view from the Bossier City side of the Red River is great!”

Folk, that’s why THERE’S ONLY ONE!!! BOOMER SOONER!!!

    • RBear says:

      Don’t under-estimate Mr. Fuente

      • Indy_sooner says:

And that FedEx money..people underestimate them for some reason

        • Budbarrybob Budbarrybob says:

Yep, but just like our sisters north of us, the duckies out west, and most of the sec, you can throw $$$, marketing spin machines, wear a new sparkly costume each week, and it will never be on the level of the Oklahoma Sooners as the #1 program in the modern era!

    • Budbarrybob Budbarrybob says:

They were on the cover of SI a few weeks ago after the win over bamr. 2 losses since then. Another fraud who cannot stand on it’s own, but like most of the sec schools you would think they were a Bud Wilkinson type dynasty because of the massive media machine, dirty finebaum, etc.

  • Crimson Marc says:

This is still the same KSU team that put up 35 on TCU and 34 on OSU in Stillwater. This is a really encouraging game from the D. I love the changes in the secondary and giving Overton some time. The DL will be a strength in the future with Overton, Lampkin, and Gallimore.

    • Budbarrybob Budbarrybob says:

The 2-4-5 defense last week was bizarre and a total fail. But so long as Mikey doesn’t come out in a 5-4-2 defense this week we should be fine.

    • Golfluvr13 says:

Um, KSU put up 45 on TCU.

  • Ed Cotter says:

Excellent team victory yesterday afternoon. Will temper my enthusiasm until I see how OU fares vs. Baylor, TCU and Okie State. Team needs to continue to make strides on both sides of the ball, especially the Offensive Line and bringing pressure, which it will need to have success vs. the last three teams on the schedule. That being said, I would love to see the Sooners wreck Tech next Saturday. Boomer!!

  • Sooner born, Sooner bred says:

We lose by 7 on a neutral field and drop nine spots in the polls. Win by 55 and a shutout on the road ( hasn’t happened in forever at Manhattan ) and we move up four spots. The polls are a bad joke. Great win for the Sooners on the road…..That is the team I’ve been looking for and expecting to see. Hopefully this is no Jeckyl and Hyde team and they can keep it rolling into November. Boomer! OU☝

    • JB says:

There are only so many spaces you can move up, but plenty more spots to fall. Yes, we blew out and shut out KSU on the road, but that doesn’t erase the fact we lost to a HORRIBLE Texas team. It’s like a bad, set wine stain on a white shirt…virtually impossible to remove no matter how much bleach you use. If OU keeps winning and teams ahead lose, OU will keep moving up.

      • Scott Moore says:

Texas isn’t as good as they were when they played us. They are not as bad as 1-4 coming in either. Two special teams gaffs from most likely being 3-2 coming in with losses to two top ranked teams. Notre Dame and TCU.

    • Sooner Ray says:

Okie St. didn’t even play and moved up three, so the voters didn’t really move us much more than we would have moved anyway due to others losing.

    • Sooner born, Sooner bred says:

The history of The Red River War….you can throw it all out the window ( losses, rankings, etc. ) It’s not like Texas doesn’t have the talented player’s and coaching ( as we found out ). Just look at the record when they’re not ranked against us and a couple of touchdown dogs. Not good. I don’t care what anybody says, Texas will always be talented…..it’s just getting them playing like it. Sound familiar?

    • SoonerinLondon says:

Polls don’t matter. They are mental masturbation now.

    • Austin says:

I wouldn’t worry about the polls too much. Look at it this way, if Ou wins out then they’re the big 12 champs and on their way to the playoff. The only thing we should focus on is Ou’s next 6 games. Ou controls their own destiny.

    • Scott Moore says:

We lost to a 1-4 team. We all know they could easily of been 3-1 when they came in but the pollsters don’t seem to take the time to figure out those little intricacies. I hope the committee does. We just need to keep winning. Polls matter in November.

  • Exiled In Ohio says:

A shout out to Neal. He talked a lot in the off-season about stepping up in his senior year. I wasn’t buying it much … I was wrong.

    • JB says:

Durron Neal has been terrific this year, something I didn’t expect after 3 straight years of drops. Westbrook was supposed to be this major threat, but he is the one who drops balls and fumbles. Quick has also been impressive, showing some great hands. Personally, I’d rather see Durron Neal and Michiah Quick getting more throws and Westbrook fewer. He hasn’t lived up to the offseason hype.

      • SoonerinLondon says:

        Agreed.
I think this might be an illustration that new players need time in the program to succeed.
Hopefully, Quick and Westbrook (and Baxter) are prepping for big years next year.

      • Boom says:

I agree. Both Westbrook and Baxter have had their difficulties going to big time football from JUCO. I think they will get better but I concur with Quick & Neal. Would like to see Mead get more playing time so he feels more comfortable on the field.

        • soonermusic says:

I’m great with Mead playing in garbage time or put in occasionally to get more comfortable, as you say, but I don’t need to see him in critical situations till he shows that he’s much better at holding on to the ball an well as being a willing blocker. He needs to watch the block that Shep leveled on the td run, and start emulating that, and start catching anything in his general area with consistency.

          • Oscar says:

Yep. Mead has had balls that were not maybe perfectly thrown, but were entirely catchable, which he whiffed. Catches he needs to make to become a starter.

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

He never goes up and aggressively gets the ball. Just kills me.

          • Indy_sooner says:

Couldn’t agree more. Mead is the laziest receiver I’ve seen. Every single play, he puts in zero effort, absolutely infuriates me…. I thought I was the only one that noticed this. He has tremendous size, always beats his man…zero production. Compare to the Neal fights

  • Boom says:

I like the quick passes especially over the middle. 1st drive was awesome and if we did this against UT, we would’ve killed them.
What I don’t like is the 2 RB set. Also, I don’t like 2 back set when Mixon go’s in motion and they do a straight hand off to Perine. Mixon isn’t pulling any defender with him and he doesn’t block. To me it’s like running a play with only 10 players. I’m sure there is a reason but I haven’t seen any production from that set.

    • Bob Edwards says:

They ran other plays out of that set. The announcers commented on how much we were confusing KSU with what we were doing out of it. They didn’t really explain, but there was something else that was working with it.

      • Boom says:

Again, Riley forgot more than I know there is a reason for his system. I’ve recorded the short version to watch later tonight. That said, I want to zero in on what the D is doing while Mixon is going in motion.

    • Exiled In Ohio says:

I liked the 2RB set. I also liked it when they split Baker out and ran it as a 2 back Wildcat.

    • JB says:

I think the 2 tailback set could be a potent offensive threat IF we had a quality offensive line. Unfortunately, the OL has proven to be the most deficient unit on this team. As it stands, I think it would make more sense to run a tailback and blocking fullback given the OL woes.

    • Scott Moore says:

The fake to Perine and swing it out to Mixon was a thing of beauty. More of that out of that set and I’ll be fine with it.

  • Sooner Ray says:

Landry Jones is now the QB for the Steelers. Just throws his first TD pass.

  • Daddy R says:

Landry Jones in a qb for steelers, throws 8 yard TD on second throw of game! Go landry GO!

  • DCinAZ says:

Agree on all counts and nice write up, Jordan. Riley called his best game of the season by far. Jordan Thomas is becoming something nasty.

  • Shelby is a Patriot says:

So awesome seeing Landry playing! Boomer!

  • Sooner Ray says:

This team is young and developing nicely. Should be stout on defense next year, need to find our next great speed rusher and Sanchez should seriously consider sticking around to be part of what should be a great secondary.
On offense our O line will still be the biggest concern, all other positions should be solid enough and Riley will be settled in knowing exactly what he has and how to use it.
I like our chances in every game left on the schedule.

    • Rick says:

Agree with all. I think the thing I like best about Sanchez’s game is his attitude. He still makes a mistake here and there, but his attitude seems impeccable.

      • Slim Sooner says:

I agree. I’m thankful he’s a Sooner. He’s not perfect, but I’ll vote to keep him anyway.

      • Recondo says:

He makes mistakes but he played lights out yesterday. 2 INTs, tackled well, timed his blitz perfectly… candidate for a game ball IMO.

      • Indy_sooner says:

You hear people critique his words. When he does play well, those same folks disperse. I’ve been a big fan and will keep being one. As long as he gives it the effort I’ll take it.

      • Scott Moore says:

When he shows up and is consistent with his approach, kid can ball. I’ve been one who has doubted him. It’s obvious he has the talent. He showed that Saturday. Happy for him. Bring it every week.

    • Shelby is a Patriot says:

I’m pretty excited about our secondary, especially Jordan Thomas.

  • Hotrod33 says:

I was happy that we executed in all facets of the game. Right now all I am hoping for is continued progress with the oline and we keep doing what I saw yesterday from here on out. Let’s see what they do against TT this week.

    • JB says:

I really liked the high tempo, quick release aspect of the offense yesterday. It kept the OL from being a factor most of the game.

    • Scott Moore says:

You know Baker is going to light them up. I hope he can keep from over doing it. Tech should be a good test to see if the D is as good as we saw against KSU or if the wildcats were just really bad. Shutting out tech would be a feat I’d like to see. Hard to do. But that would turn some heads and give this D a load of confidence. Heck, hold them to 21 and I bet we score 50 or more.

  • Rick says:

I was sure the polls would have Bama up in the top 5, they only moved up 1 spot. We could have moved up 5 spots and rose 4 spots (Coaches poll). Not bad.

    • Rick says:

OU moves up 2 spots on AP poll. SEC SEC SEC

      • Budbarrybob Budbarrybob says:

SEC Luncacy: Insanity of boasting about a conference as if it’s a real team. Rampant among those whose team can’t stand on its own. Media created sports fraud.

        • tfb_fortyseven says:

Yeah, totally …. Media-Create-Sports-Fraud … memphis and houston to the Big12?? Hmmm …. bring in teams who can whip the SEC? (not sure houston does, but dayum if Memphis didn’t make a case yesterday).

    • Budbarrybob Budbarrybob says:

Bamr top5? not so sure? other than KU, who would their QB start for in big12? they lost at home to a 2-loss olemiss team (who just got beat by double digits by memphis!)

      • Scott Moore says:

On the other hand. We lost in the cotton bowl to a then 1-4 team that had buzzards swarming. You have to look at both sides. I’m actually hoping texass can show up for at least one more game. Baylor anyone?

  • Slim Sooner says:

Thanks for taking time from your Sunday to write this up, Jordan Esco. Agree with your assessments and observations. I’m proud of the overall effort and improvement from last week to yesterday. It’s been quite an emotional swing for us all. Our guys just need to keep on working.

  • Rick says:

Landry just threw another TD pass, iced the game.

  • Shelby is a Patriot says:

    So happy for Landry!

  • Rick says:

    Landry 8-12 168 yrds, 2 tds. Not a bad 1st game.

    • DCinAZ says:

He’s being called a hero and Troy Aikman is giving up the mancrush on him. Pretty good day for our boy!

      • Rick says:

I’ve been harassing Skip Bayless on Twitter (like he really cares about my opinion), seems a lot of people didn’t take kindly to his Landry remarks.

        • DCinAZ says:

Bayless can eat a bag of you know whats. Landry led them on 5 straight scoring drives after the Steelers only had 59 total yards in 1st half.

          • Rick says:

I didn’t count, so I’m just guessing, but about 99 out of 100 tweets agreed with your (and my) sentiment.

        • Jon Nakata says:

Skip’s just still pissed about all of those bad moments that cost OU big games… as are most OU fans ( which skip is ). I say, Get HFJ a psychiatrist and some decent anxiety meds, he may be the best QB in the league…

          • Rick says:

For a guy who is “supposed” to be a Sooner fan, he sure took his shots against both Landry and Stoops today. Personally I think those media types get it in their heads that they are a talent and what they say is somehow important. I can enjoy a game just as much without their input. He made some stupid comment about Stoops not getting the troops ready last week. I reminded him that Perine said Stoops had been cautioning them all week about their mentality and what could happen. He made them watch the 2013 game. I share your love for OUr Sooners, but Skippy not so much, he’s an idiot.

          • Budbarrybob Budbarrybob says:

            Skippy is not a Sooner

          • Jon Nakata says:

Never said he was smart, lol. Alot of those talking heads think that their opinions matter more than they do… happens alot on these comment threads too…

          • tfb_fortyseven says:

If he still has Happy Foot Disease … right now, I’m not so sure he does.

          • Jon Nakata says:

I was really happy for him today, as I have been many times in the past, and I was glad that the Steelers kept him after the draft too. But please dont judge me if I’m still a little skeptical…

          • tfb_fortyseven says:

No way, I’m of the same mindset, but it’s always fun to see an OU QB do well in the NFL no matter the period.

  • j l says:

Secondary could be pretty special next year if sanchez comes back.

sanchez, thomas, parker, johnson, a. thomas/ another young safety would be a group id feel pretty confident in.

    • Rick says:

They like so much of the team are young and are only going to improve. Could be really special..

      • j l says:

They are all around the ball, making plays, and creating turnovers. Thats more of what we are used to from this team. Liking cooks and the improvements the kids are showing.

    • Jpsooner23 says:

Yes and deep as well if some of these freshman develop well this year and offseason

FWIW, I don’t think there is any way Sanchez goes pro. My guess is he probably already knows that too. He made that comment a good while ago. Even if he still thinks he may he will not get a grade good enough to be worth declaring IMO.

      • Brent says:

I actually think he leaves. He won’t improve his draft stock by sticking around for his senior year. Might as well get paid while learning on the job.

        • Scott Moore says:

He could. He still has things to work on. Mostly tackling and consistency. If he would just bring full effort to every play. Be fundamentally sound tackling. All American potential. 2nd to 3rd round pick. Needs to gain weight of course. I’m certainly no expert, but right now he’s a late rounder. As the rest of the defense improves around him, he should elevate.

        • thill says:

He has to get a job in order to learn on it. That is just my opinion but I think he would at best make a practice squad.

  • Jeremy Phillips says:

I still would like to see us in diamond on short yardage.. Or even wildcat.. that’s something we need to improve, the basic run package doesn’t work with this OL in short yardage.. Do something different please…

    • Rick says:

I loved the red zone pass yesterday, showing we were going ot pass right, did pass right, and Andrews was wide open. Overloaded the field, rolled to the right, passed to the right. It looked to me with the D outnumbered that Baker could have walked in if they didn’t try to cover him instead of Andrews.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

We might do that in a game that matters. We ran it against Tenn b/c that game was close. I bet if we’re in a close game against Baylor, TCU, or OSU, you might see it again.

    • Walter Sobcek says:

Yes, going to have to diamond or (in my dreams) a Power I. Can’t run the balll in short yardage in the RZ with what we’re doing.

    • guest says:

That would be nice, unfortunately I have doubts whether the OL is up to the task this year… Maybe an unbalanced line to the right side with a 330lb guard playing the FB position and a 330lb blocking TE on the left who goes in motion to the right and the ball given to someone going off tackle, would be fun to watch.

      • Budbarrybob Budbarrybob says:

Yes, I have heard of NFL teams doing similar things to get their 2 best OL side by side and running behind them with success. And I remember Torrence Marshall at FB in the NC game and other teams pro and college putting their best big athletes in the backfield as lead blockers (ole miss all-american DT, etc. unfortunately he was concussed in the loss to memphis so you are taking a risk)

    • Budbarrybob Budbarrybob says:

Agreed. The Diamond should be run not only in short yardage, but as a wrinkle at anytime with the all the great backs we have and lack of proven WR/TE’s

    • Scott Moore says:

I don’t know why they’ve gone away from the Wildcat. Saving it for TCU and Baylor? Didn’t they first bring it out against Tulsa? I loved it. Want to see Mixon throw out of it.

      • Jeremy Phillips says:

We ran it 4 or 5 times in the red zone at Tennessee.. Had a TD called back for holding on one of those…

  • Recondo says:

    Things I liked:
1- Great rebound after last week. This squad has a resilience last year’s lacked.
    2- WRs in space.
    3- W. Johnson’s physicality in the nickel.
4- O line in-game adjustments. Pass protection improved dramatically in 2nd half.
5- Nobody had to get bailed out. Both sides of the ball held up their end.
6- Andrews only had 1 catch but he was in the game more and even had a nice block.

    Things that had me frustrated:
1- Run blocking inside the 10.
2- Early sacks, although this improved.
3- Nothing against Mixon but Perine is our closer. Feed him the ball late.

    Great game Sooners!

  • rainydaze114 says:

I know I shouldn’t complain about a shutout, but it’s really disheartening to see Sanchez bite so hard on so many double moves. Fortunately for him in this game, their QBs couldn’t hit water if they fell out of a boat.

    • Recondo says:

We got lucky on 2 busted coverages but otherwise the whole secondary played incredibly well.

      • Rick says:

He really only got beat on one of the coverages, (he fell down on the other one, one of the hash marks jumped up and got him). Both could have been fatal with an accurate pass, but neither were. The team part of both were, both times he hurried the throws, because of pressure, both were inaccurate, so both times the team part of the effort helped Sanchez.

        • rainydaze114 says:

Also agreed. Solid team effort. I just don’t like seeing a 4 year starter making rookie mistakes so often still.

          • Rick says:

Zack is not playing it safe. He has a nose for the ball, if he didn’t he wouldn’t be making pics. The problem with tight coverage, even with the best of DB’s is that they occassionally will bite, and get beat, just as he did yesterday. That’s why he made the comment last night that he still needed to improve/work on his game.

A lot of good, aggressive corners bite on the double move, especially when the score indicates that taking chances is okay. His coverage other than that has generally been spectacular and if honing his aggression a little bit is what he needs to do, I’m sure he’ll do it. Those that don’t recognize what a smart player he is, are making a big mistake imho.

          • Scott Moore says:

I think he’s got good instincts. Just takes plays off and doesn’t tackle consistently. But loads of talent and improving on his deficiencies. This is one of the best games I’ve ever seen him play.

          • soonermusic says:

“4 year starter” pretty sure he’s only a junior.

      • rainydaze114 says:

Agreed. Overall they played well, but those busted coverages are touchdowns against any other team.

    • tfb_fortyseven says:

You gotta accept that from Sanchez … the pros most likely will not, but I do ‘cuz his pick six’s are simply da bomb!!!

  • Zack says:

I’m not sure if the so called light has come on for Landry but this is the route he needed to the NFL. Sit for a few years behind a veteran (championship) qb, battle other veterans for a job and now he needs to just keep improving and some team will take a chance on him when his contract is up.

    • Sooner Ray says:

I can’t believe how much love he is getting on the NFL shows.

      • SoonerOracle737 says:

Troy Aikman was man-crushing all over Landry. Props to Landry on a good game.

      • Zack says:

Well for all the reasons fans should regret sh**ing on him while he was here. He’s a great looking qb when he’s on and throws a nice deep ball. I didn’t watch his game today but from everything I’m hearing he was great.

        • Sooner Ray says:

He was typical Landry, made some throws that wow’d the tv guys and were called great, difficult NFL throws, then would throw behind or low. Bottom line, he made the throws to win the game and likely played his way into a starting role next week if Ben can’t come back.

          • SoonerinLondon says:

            Winningest QB in OU history.

          • tfb_fortyseven says:

            Yes, … BUT …

          • SoonerinLondon says:

Yes, but would have loved to have had him here last year with a 1700 yard rusher and a line that gave up only 9 sacks all year.

Will never know, but I suspect we would have lost less than 5 games.

          • tfb_fortyseven says:

That’s fine … you can pump the HFJ sunshine all you want, and you know what I mean by ‘BUT’. I love watching OU QBs be successful at the next level, no matter what the situation and/or length of time, and I can hardly wait to see him in action again (just like Sammy tonight) the next time the Steelers play. IF he overcomes his own fear factor that limited his greatness at OU, he’s going to be VERY special in the NFL. Until I see evidence that he has overcome his own fear, he’ll continue to be HFJ who played as the starting, passing OU QB longer than any other passing QB in OU’s history.

          • SoonerinLondon says:

Haters gonna hate. I understand that.

          • tfb_fortyseven says:

            ummmkay …

          • Jon Nakata says:

Im a Steeler fan, and I was watching the game like… Good Landry or Bad Landry??? TD pass thrown perfect? Good Landry! INT very next play on 2point conversion? BAD LANDRY!

          • Daddy R says:

They had no business even going for two at that point in the game…

          • Jon Nakata says:

yeah we were screaming that too.

      • tfb_fortyseven says:

Dude, didn’t you get the memo? It’s all about the ‘stache!!!

    • Daddy R says:

I’ve been waiting to see him with the number 1 offense for a while. Pittsburgh has so many weapons, its hard for him not to succeed if he gets time. Guy has certainly improved every year in the league too… Hope for the best!

      • tfb_fortyseven says:

He’s the kinda guy who will win lots of games for the Steelers IF they protect him ….

    • Budbarrybob Budbarrybob says:

Sitting for a few years behind a veteran is the route most every QB took for obvious reasons. It wasn’t until recently that changed when they started being overvalued in the draft and were being paid outrageous signing bonuses which luckily was somewhat capped.

      • tfb_fortyseven says:

Wish Bradford would’ve gotten in with New England … he was no match for the Rams’ system. The Rams just about ruined that guys’ chances.

  • rphokc says:

just saw a brief post-game int with lj……….don’t think I heard him speak much while at ou, but he was all smiles after getting to perform for real and pulling it off

  • Chris White says:

    Congrats Landry Jones WOW!

  • Jason Vos says:

I always wondered why Mike Stoops felt the need to always play a safety at the NB spot. I’ve asked multiple times why not play a CB there in 4 wide sets.

Mike Stoops is too hard headed sometimes.

  • Hunter Frantz says:

My thoughts on Perine’s touches were due to the fact that we were up by so much at half time. I wanted him to get into a role running it in he 3rd but then I saw him limp a bit after a play. Then I was like…okay take him out. That’s why he pretty much disappeared later. Also, anybody else realize that KSU’s rush D was ranked first in the conference? With that knowledge, I feel our O line played pretty well overall. that Geary fella is a monster DT

  • rphokc says:

    via LT……..

    1) I wonder what Landry and Vick talk about in the locker room.

    Dogs and Jesus.

    2) Landy: Hey Michael.

    Vick: Sup, rook?

Landry: Do you know what God spelled backwards is?

    Vick: **** you.

  • hOUligan says:

The players are getting comfortable. Think not worrying about Perine’s touches or Mixon’s touches or Shep’s touches but just setting the tempo he wanted with plays that he felt were available allowed LR to make the offense work the way he intends. It’s about winning.

  • Rick says:

I was just peeking at the all time OU passing records, reminiscing about the Landry years. It was interesting that Baker has moved up to #19 all time in 5 games, 1 ahead of Blake Bell needs a couple hundred yards to move past bomar.

  • kt-raida says:

Pretty sure somebody beat me to it, but I am proud of Landry Jones performance

    • Oscar says:

Wish I could have seen his game. Good for him!

    • Fear The Magic says:

So I guess now OU has all of the QB positions locked up in the State of Pennsylvania.
      Not too Shabby.

      • Walter Sobcek says:

Pitt and Philly should be paying royalties to OU.

      • Daddy R says:

You know whats funny about that, the guys that wrote the broadway musical, “OKLAHOMA,” Rogers and Hammerstein, weren’t even in Oklahoma when they wrote it, Hammerstein wrote it from his farm in Pennsylvania…the dude was looking out his window at the waving wheat in Pennsylvania!

      • Stephen Dale says:

now if the games were just televised in Oklahoma !!

        • Tony B says:

We got it in the booming metropolis of Derby, KS (Wichita burb) and I must say as not the biggest Landry supporter I was utterly impressed. He checked down to the right calls, was calm, and no happy feet. He was under big time pressure when Bryant took the 90 yarder to the house and Landry got the ball where it needed to be. He has definitely improved. As a Steelers fan I am not hoping for him to be their back up just yet (need more than a half of the good Landry to make that call) but he might get a shot to stay on the team even when Ben and Gradkowski come back. Vick was just well not good.

        • Mike Drisko says:

I see them both on SundayTicket.
Wasn’t so good at first for Sam and DeMarco though.

  • Walter Sobcek says:

As Jordan mentions, gotta shore up that short-yardage run game in the RZ, because it will hurt us if we don’t. I’ll keep on dreaming of seeing a Power I or Wildcat.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

They’ve used the wildcat. I’d like to see a FB, TB, and two TE’s running a power r or left or a Mayfield boot with an option to pass.

    • rphokc says:

I briefly watched a little of the stoops show……….showed twice getting big plays down to the 2 yd line then kicking fg’s, stoops said nothing………what they didn’t show was that the fg’s followed repeated attempts to run the ball in from the 2 and getting stuffed………deano didn’t ask and stoops didn’t comment

  • J J says:

I called half a hundred on Tuesday…. Didn’t think it be 35 at halftime. Great team performance & taking hand cuffs off the younger ones

  • Sooner Ray says:

LOL, Stoops told the guys in the locker room “from now on we’re checking into hotel rooms at midnight and eating cheeseburgers”.

  • guest says:

“The game against K-State wasn’t to bad. Of course a shut out is good, but the DC should be fired for allowing K-State over 100 yards total offense. As for the OC, well 55 points is over half a hundred, but don’t forget, OU had to settle for 2 FGs. What’s that about! He should be fired, too! We should send Bob Stoops and the entire staff packing for underperforming.” – The Stupid Section

  • Sooner Ray says:

Stoops says the Romar injury was a toe.

  • ToatsMcGoats says:

This was the most complete game this team has played in a long, long time…yet there’s not one highlight film or youtube vid up of the game…what gives???

  • OUknowitscomin says:

REPS: To me that’s what was most important about this game. We haven’t had a complete game by any unit until now, suddenly they all had one.
That’s the great thing typically against early cupcakes, getting good reps & flow, no matter the competition. Due to so many new parts, new O system, they just never got that flow going in those early games, just in spurts.
Solid reps, with sustained drives by O, was a great chemistry builder no matter if KSU crapped the bed or not. Young reps, variable personnel reps, quality reps.
I feel like they grew more as a team in 4qtrs than the previous 20.

    • Scott Moore says:

Good point. We should have three more games of opportunities to get this thing hitting on all cylinders and ready to beat the beasts of the conference. It’s OUr turn.

  • Sooner Ray says:

Jordan Evans undergoing MRI…..step up Mr. Shannon.

    • Zack says:

I think they go with Shannon to see if he can play well but I wouldn’t be surprised if Tay Evans gets a chance to show some things. Shannon is good in the run game but not so much in coverage side to side.

      • Brent says:

isn’t Tay Evans hurt too? I can’t keep track of our injuries.

      • Sooner Ray says:

Someone posted on another site that Shannon was better in coverage but that didn’t seem right to me. Interesting week coming up.

        • Zack says:

We may find out but I never really liked Shannon in space. Very limited speed and not super athletic like Evans.

          • Sooner Ray says:

Yeah, been a while since we’ve seen him in a full game but I remember him being our run stopper.

          • EasTex says:

He made a nice pick on a Colvin tipped pass in the ND game 2 years ago while he was in his drop.

          • Scott Moore says:

I’ve always thought Shannon was one of our best defenders. I think it really hurt us last year not having him. I think it’s hurt him too. Still needs to shake off the rust. Leading tackler in 2013.

          • Zack says:

He’s a good player. If he does get the start I hope he shows out but I do believe Tay and Curtis have a higher ceiling. But at this point in their careers be experience may win out.

  • SquidGiant says:

At one point during the game the announcers pointed out that we have 3 QB’s with starting experience, and I believe used the phrase, “an embarrassment of riches.” Interesting contrast with many thoughts of the OU fanbase, but an obvious advantage given KSU’s situation. Being an OU fan is both a blessing and a curse. Here we are again Evans may be out for a while but we have an experienced senior ready to step up. (On a side note I saw Curtis Bolton on the sideline and he looked huge.)

    • EasTex says:

Evans was on the Sunday night coaches show, seemed fine and Coach Stoops said they came away from the game without additional injuries. We should know more at tomorrows press conference.

      • SquidGiant says:

He has been great this year so I hope so.

      • Sooner Ray says:

He was doing some running on the sideline after injury so hopefully the MRI is precautionary.

        • EasTex says:

If he were hurt I think it would be odd for him to be on the coaches show and not being treated or iced down some where. He was also talking about next week’s game as though he was fired up and ready to go.

          • Sooner Ray says:

I was watching the show also and thought that was odd given this news.

          • SquidGiant says:

Would it be that odd of Stoops (don’t blame him) to conceal an injury?

          • EasTex says:

And have the kid sit beside him during his weekly show? Don’t think that is likely.

          • SquidGiant says:

I’m just thinking back to the fact that most of us following the feeds knew that Bond was unlikely to go versus Texas but it remained a mystery until gameday. I am not questioning your opinion as much as giving Stoops credit for collusion.

          • EasTex says:

Coach Stoops is a stand up guy, don’t know of any instances where he was trying to “catfish” another team with his injured players. At this stage he really doesn’t need to, we have more talented depth at LB and DL than we have had in quite some time.

          • SquidGiant says:

At the same time, he doesn’t provide intel that he doesn’t need to. I really didn’t know much about Evans’ injury until seeing it pop up in the last hour. I totally agree about the “stand up guy” part. Which is also why I feel that if there was some chance of reinjury he will hold Evans out.

          • EasTex says:

I’ve been gone most of the day, this was the first I knew of a possible injury.
If he can’t practice full speed, he won’t start. They need to be prepared to play fast and hard again this week.

          • SquidGiant says:

I feel like this will be a good season, but one that will take years off of my life. Just wanted to quash any debate. As a frequent follower (but rare commenter) I respect your opinion (especially when it comes to creative use of tater tots.)

          • EasTex says:

This is my 59th year of loving Sooner football. Each season, even in the dark years when expectations were low and wins were few, has always added quality to my life. My love for the Sooners will never diminish. I get embarrassed at times by some that call themselves fans, but never by the Sooners.

          • Sooner Ray says:

If he is trying to conceal it he failed because it is being tweeted and posted everywhere. Don’t think that was the plan. I think they just want to be sure there isn’t anything to worry about as far as him practicing this week.

          • EasTex says:

            *Pssst* Ray, almost deer season.

          • Sooner Ray says:

Helped a buddy move some stands around last week and checked some game cams…..there will be sausage this year. 🙂

          • EasTex says:

That’s what I was doing this afternoon. Got the feeders filled up and took a couple of 30gallon bags filled with acorns and spread them around, too.
            Mmmm…sausage and tenderloin.

          • EasTex says:

Jordan sure seemed comfortable sitting next to Bob and talking Sooner football.

          • Sooner Ray says:

I watched the play where he was injured this evening, he sure had trouble putting weight on it as he left the field. If nothing else, he will feel it for a few days.

          • EasTex says:

I missed the play and qtr when it happened. All I knew was I saw #20 out there and thought it was just time for the backups.
Jordan has been having a great year, hope he is out there and healthy this week.

          • Zack says:

Should have been playing backups after the first drive in the third quarter. Hopefully stoops learns this at some point. A blow out like that he needed to start establishing depth.

          • soonermusic says:

“Hopefully stoops learns this at some point.” Hah. He’s caught between depth considerations, versus wanting to give his starters important game reps, and second half stamina both mental and physical for the starters as well. They’re always putting backups in early in blow outs at positions where the fans don’t seem to notice, cause it’s not wholesale subs, but, for Stoops it’s a bold and unusual move to take out the qb before the second drive of the fourth.

          • Scott Moore says:

Ha ha….now that last statement is very true. Bold and unusual indeed.

          • ccmosaic says:

Come on, really? This team is young and needs all the work it can get. Heck many people wanted Perine to still be in the 4th qrter to help him get going.

  • Budbarrybob Budbarrybob says:

As a side note, the game was shown NATIONALLY @ 2:30 on ABC so OU/Texass should never be an absurd morning kickoff @ 11am under the myth that’s the only national slot on ABC. As has been for decades, ABC routinely shows national games @ 2:30, but for some reason many have been fooled, including the local media, into thinking 2:30 is only a regional slot for ABC. Step up Joe C!

  • CoachTalk says:

You guys remember Frank shannon being a big deal… not so much anymore

  • Stephen Dale says:

the offense used Saturday against KST would not have worked against the fast, talented Texas CB’s.. In retrospect, nothing would have worked. OU does not have the ‘deep speed’ at WR to keep Texas db’s off the LOS and OU’s OL is too slow to handle the Texas DL / LB…OU simply does not match up well against superior talent…and the same problem will reappear when Baylor , TCU, and OSU step on the field…..there will be matchup issues……..

  • Tony B says:

I have now been to every OU vs KSU game (home and away) since 2000 and this was the most dominating win on both sides of the ball that I’ve seen in this series by a long way. Can OU just play all home games in BSFS. BS has never lost there and usually they aren’t close. I must say we had awesome tickets (50 yd line 15th row) that my company gave me only because I was taking two of my buddies from Purple Kansas and the owner thought he’d get a good laugh after the kitty’s beat us. The laugh was on him and needless to say I may never get those 4 tickets again. The fans were very cordial and I enjoyed the light ribbing from the gray hairs (I have sat near the student section there before and things were not so PC) and I was only told to sit down once, which I did not. I just turned and gave them a smile and big Boomer! Hell of a game boys now just keep that train rolling, there is still a lot of season left and a lot to prove.

  • JrsySooner says:

First i wont pat myself on the back just yet…this was ou vs ut for ksu. Possibly a fluke for both teams…ksu had way to many injuries to label this beat down of a quality team….6 games in ou has no identity. ..i actually think we will see what this team is made of and their direction
once we play tt..if the same ou shows up watch out the rest of the year could be surprising. ..,struggle and we could easily lose two more games
