Open Post | Wednesday, Feb. 17th (UPDATE 7:57 pm)

– Recent Offers: As you’ve surely seen, the Sooners have made a number of offers over the past couple days. And we just wanted to touch briefly on a couple:

Roshauud Paul (VIDEO) – The Bremond, TX ATH picked up an offer from the Sooners on Tuesday. We’ll catch up with Paul soon, but his initial reaction via text was, “I’m excited!”

Grant Calcaterra (VIDEO) – Rancho Santa Margarita, CA ATH, Grant Calcaterra also picked up an offer from Oklahoma.

Levi Jones (VIDEO) – OU also extended an offer to OLB Levi Jones out of Austin, TX. Jones is the younger brother of former Texas and, more recently, Arizona WR, Cayleb Jones.

Team Note | Stanvon Taylor: Have been told Stanvon Taylor may be switching over to the offensive side of the ball soon. Taylor is currently rehabbing from an injury and as a result hasn’t been participating in 7-on-7 workouts, but we’ve heard the plan for when he’s ready to return is to give it a go at wide receiver (rather than at defensive back, where he has yet to really find playing time). – (Super K)

Defensive Line Coaching Note: To no one’s surprise, I’m told the Sooners are considering multiple candidates to fill the current vacancy on staff. But I continue to hear their top choice for the position is Michigan State defensive line coach, Ron Burton. I’ve been told there is a mutual interest on both sides, but it remains to be seen whether or not OU would be able to lure him away from East Lansing.

As you may recall from a previous TFB update regarding Burton, one source familiar with the MSU program said the Spartans wouldn’t necessarily shy away from a bidding war if that’s what it came down to.

Just to reiterate, they are considering multiple candidates for the position. But based on what I’ve been told as of today, Burton is the name at the top of their list (and as most of you know, I personally believe it would be an absolutely home run hire).

We’ll continue to update you on this situation when/if there are any developments and/or as more information becomes available. – (Super K)

Thanks TFB for getting out an OP. We like to complain, but mostly in jest. You guys are still head-and-shoulders above the crowd when it comes to OU info!

Love Roshauud Paul’s film. I don’t believe he will be playing QB though. That kid can move, I think he would excel at WR.

    • cush creekmont says:

Nice sized kid. Seemed pretty fast too. If he is not locked in to being a QB, he would make a very versatile player – outside wr, slot, or maybe even H if he can carry weight.

      • CrimsonNative says:

I’m not sure what his measurables are but he looks like a shifty slot guy.

        • cush creekmont says:

Max Preps had him at 6′-0″ and 170lbs. He looked taller and bigger in that video. It showed that he played defense and had 5 INT last year and he returned KOs. With a little growth in the next year and half and then some Smitty, he could be a salty outside guy.

  • SoonerOracle737 says:

Burton sounds like the real deal. Hope we can lure him away from the Great White North.

  • ouwooferman says:

opens TFB, shocked, falls over from OP being up. JHF here. Let the bidding begin for Burton

  • Boom says:

Burton is good, no doubt and he would be great for OU. However, I’m curious if this is two sided hire. If OU were to move to the B1G, this hire would really help in recruiting.

  • Lincoln Hawk says:

There have been quite a number of posters here that have been calling on Stanvon to move to O saying he would kill it, hopefully they are proven correct. Best of luck to Stanvon in his new position and recovery.

    • cush creekmont says:

True. Seems like this has been on lots of boards for years. Maybe like with some other players that were passed over, the coaches want to give him a shot. I sure hope it is that rather than the WRs are so bad that we are trying anything – that would be a worry.

    • Spitting Bull says:

Seems like we are so stacked over there. But unproven so I guess he’s got a better shot than D-back.

    • SoonerinLondon says:

Let Stanvon and Quick trade spots.

  • Stephen says:

Not sure if Burton would be a home run but I’m glad they aren’t settling between Ah You and Thibs.

    • Lincoln Hawk says:

I wonder if they are planning on hiring based on recruiting over actual coaching/teaching? Seems like the last couple were a contrast in that regard.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

Always found it funny the same fans that roast Bob for hiring “friends and family”, would have no problems with him hiring inexperienced former Sooner players.

      • Stephen says:

I have no problem hiring former players. I have a big problem with hiring guys that have to learn on the job. That’s what lesser programs are for.

      • Jeremy Phillips says:

Thibs is far from inexperienced & would actually fill a huge need in the recruiting phase.. He’s from Houston & recruited Houston very well for every program he’s worked for so far.. I’m not saying i would hire him.. But i Damn sure wouldn’t write him off..

      • albsooner says:

CJ played in the league…most college players dream is to play in the league.. Plus, he is African American. He has two qualities that can only help, particularly when recruiting and trying to relate to today’s football players.

        • SoonerfanTU says:

I don’t disagree that those are solid qualities to have in a DL coach, but they are way down the line of what we’re actually looking for.

  • KatyOUdad says:

Saw that 247 moved Levi Draper up to #68 overall prospect in the country, #1 in state of OK. Increased his rating to a 95 for what that is worth.

  • soonersd says:

So thankful you guys can now stop metzing around

  • SamSooner says:

Jordan, what is the likelihood that Ou will get Burton?

  • Dustin says:

Anyone headed out to L. Dale Mitchell this weekend? I was thinking about it. Supposed to be beautiful Friday and Saturday.

  • RBear says:

Can someone in the know, please post what DL of note have been coached by Burton.

    TIA

    • SemperfiSooner says:

This was all I could find on his past players. Rick Ricketts to an all-conference year and defensive most valuable player honors in the Independence Bowl. In 2009, Burton led senior Ben Garland to all-conference honors and a free agent signing with the Denver Broncos in the NFL. In 2007, defensive end Jake Paulson was a first-team all-conference choice. Also Burton was the linebackers coach at Indiana Hoosiers football for five seasons (1997-01) where he was responsible for the development of two Butkus Award nominees, Justin Smith and Jabar Robinson

  • DR LEO MARVIN says:

    Burton works for me.

  • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

What, an Open Post for supper? So now what am I supposed to do, hm? I can’t just sit and read and Google for thirty-dang-minutes while my supper gets cold! Who’s in charge here?

  • Sooner Ray says:

Late OP it appears. I guess the decision to pick up my dad and spend the day shooting our AR-15’s was a good one. I’m not all that late. 🙂

  • KJ1123 says:

Jack Burton would be a great DL coach.

    • Jeremy Phillips says:

Old Jack Burton Always says… “Give me your best shot, pal!”

      • KJ1123 says:

        “I can take it.”

        • My only concern is that there is a huge difference in the offenses he will face in the Big 12 than what he faced in the Big 10. Also, what kind of recruiting experience does he have in Texas? Does he open up any recruiting areas we haven’t been in? Good name, good resume, good history, not sure he is the best for our current defense or league.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

“Have ya paid your dues, Jack?”

“Yessir, the check is in the mail.”

    • JD says:

What was that!…6.9 on the richter scale….LOL a lot of one liners in that movie!

  • Daryl says:

Was investigating one of Tupai’s family members on twitter today and was very encouraged to see that there were several coaches and OU accounts being followed but same was true of Utah. If the twitter info is right it would seem to come down to us and Utah for him and I would love for him to pick OU.

  • Cooter Bailey says:

Does Michigan State run primarily a 4-3 or 3-4? I can’t picture their defense in my mind.

  • Doobie74OU says:

Edit : SOAP BOX MOMENT RO MENTAL PURGE NOT SURE WHICH!
It looks like despite money OU could also offer him Co-Defensive Coordinator as well but Michigan State already has Co Coordinators. This is not a hack on Kish cause I have never been on that bandwagon but it would be cool if they got Burton and they stay in the 3-4 then they could let Burton coach the DL and OLB because he has coached LBs before as well. Move Mike to ILB (besides being Coordinator), get rid of Kish, and hire Chip Viney as an Assistant DB Coach under Cooks. This would allow him to get out and recruit away from campus which is were I think he will really shine! We could then get a young guy wanting to get into coaching ala CJ Ah you and hire him at the Quality Control position Viney would vacate and he could help Burton Coach the DL & OLBs. OK! OK! OK! a bit crazy I know but the OP was late and I had a lot of time to think! LOL!

    • OUhomer4life says:

Why would Ah you return to the position he vacated, that is why chip got that Quality Control position.

    • BoomerDave says:

Wasn’t LB the strength of our last recruiting class? Not sure why you’d want to fire that coach in favor of a young coach who has never been on a recruiting visit in his life or who has never been a D-1 coach for that matter.

    • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

I think K has said that OU executes multiple D line techniques and Ron Burton seems to (or had) executed a 4-3 technique.

      • Doobie74OU says:

Yeah Mike Stoops has said they want to keep the multiple fronts with their base being a 3-4 but they have players that can fit a 4-3 as well so lets them go a lot of different directions.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

That would be very disrespectful and unfair to Kish. He is a good coach, and an underappreciated recruiter, IMO.

      • Doobie74OU says:

I agree. I don’t have any problems with Kish at all. He has never been the problem of the OU defense. Down recruiting years were and the last 2 classes he has helped bring in great LB recruits. Would just love to see Viney out on the recruiting trail. Would only build the pipeline to Cali and think he could boost us in other areas as well! Like I said crazy idea just getting crazy waiting on my daily OP fix!

Im going to hooters spread some metz, peace my friends.

    • Sooner Ray says:

Gonna watch his vid after while.

    • Sooner Ray says:

      Strong runner.

      • Zack says:

Boulware needs to land 2 good backs this year. If he can’t then he needs to be gone.

        • Brien Brown says:

Are we upset with just Adams this year? Mean thought he was really are only one. But I get this is a big year for us to sign 2-3 and we need some play makers! But, are we upset with Adams?

          • BoomerDave says:

I’m not upset with Adams, but only time will tell. Can’t be upset with just one RB last class. That is all our numbers would allow. Bob stated that at his recruiting presser.

          • Brien Brown says:

Agreed was just asking if we are upset as a whole with just one this past class.

          • Zack says:

No just that boulware isn’t credited for landing Adams. And this year he needs to bring in 2 studs with the possibility of Perine and mixon leaving.

          • Brien Brown says:

I got ya man was just curious and it seems he is putting in early work. Dobbins will be a great get if we get him. Who else we like this class so far?

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Don’t they initially recruit areas and not necessarily positions? Would you know if this is OU’s procedure?

          • Zack says:

I believe it’s both. For example with Adams, I’m certain Riley is the one who reached out to him because of his contacts in that region. But I’m also certain that boulware recruited him. It’s just Riley was the constant. When Adams got his offer, Cale was still the running backs coach. Whaley I think was boulware’s first offer.

    • OceanDescender says:

Love to see guys from my alma mater get opportunities to play for the Sooners! He’s got that black and gold #OUDNA!

  • Zack says:

Huge news from Bandy. Would be awesome to pull that kid out of Miami.

  • Dick Bump says:

    Come on Bandy!

  • TSFFKAG says:

Ron Burton would be a absolute dream coach for both the program and for the players! I hope OU can afford him.

  • More news of Big12 expansion. TFB, do you think it might really happen this time? Seems like it will based on what I have read. My picks, in order, would be Cinn., U Conn, Memphis or Houston (though not crazy about another Texas team). Then we would go east-west with league split with Iowa State, WVU, Baylor, U Conn, Cinn and TCU in the east and OSU, OU, KU, KSU, Texas Tech and texas in the west. We missed big time when we had a chance to take Louisville and Cinn. a few years ago.

  • rphokc says:

duke 74/ carolina 73…….great game at carolina

    • Framoka says:

Like I have said, I live in and Durham and thought the game was over. I laid down, then in a few heard my wife shriek. I assumed it was good news (from a Duke perspective) and it was. Unbelievable, Roy is a poor bench coach IMO.

  • Matthew Allen says:

A post below shows that Burton runs a 4-3 front at MSU, but I looked up his bio and he coached at Air Force from 2003-2012 and they ran a 3-4 front. So he seems to have experience with both fronts. Here is a video of Air Force in 2012.

    https://youtu.be/AhYeSKk8PiY

  • PlayLikeaChampion says:

Not questioning the coaches, but the last two hires at DL coach have been inexperienced 3-4 hires. Not sure, if OU will buck their 3-4 for an experienced 4-3 guy. That appears counterproductive to Mike Stoops recruiting over the last three years. Mike Stoops has been an expert at the 4-2-5 all of his life, so he truly needs an experienced 3-4 guru.

As some have posted below, perhaps Ron Burton has experience at both. Burton is a well spoken DL coach that commands the room from the videos I’ve watched. I can see him being a major recruiting asset for all the right reasons.

Flip flopping types of QBs is what backed Josh Heupel into a bad corner.

    • Matthew Allen says:

Burton appears to have experience in both fronts. Looks to be a great hire, especially since Mike said he now wants to run a true 3-4 in his post signing day press conference. I like the coaches we have hired recently, hope this one is a home run!
