One Name To Know In The OU D-Line Coaching Search

Image via msuspartans.com

A little less than one year ago when Bob Stoops hired a defensive line coach to replace Jerry Montgomery, it was a name that, for most of us, came out of left field. And despite some of the more familiar names being thrown out at the moment as a possible replacement for Diron Reynolds, I get the sense Stoops could pull another rabbit out of his hat.

With respect to those familiar names we just talked about, by now you’ve surely seen and/or heard two former OU defensive ends mentioned as possible candidates. Calvin Thibodeaux played at OU from 2002-06 and is currently on the staff at Kansas as the defensive line coach. C.J. Ah You also played at OU from 2005-06 and was the Sooners special teams QC coach before just recently named the defensive line coach at Vanderbilt.

I’m not saying it won’t be either of those guys, but when I think back to when Stoops hired Montgomery he was a guy at a major program who could recruit his you know what off. And while Reynolds may not have been a full-fledged asst. coach at Stanford or necessarily known as a dynamic recruiter, he did bring with him a considerable amount of NFL experience.

As to who could be a good fit and in my estimation THE guy Stoops should target, Michigan State defensive line coach Ron Burton (BIO). In fact, TFB has been told by a source that Burton’s name has already been mentioned as one of the names under consideration as a possible candidate.

If you watch enough college football, you should already know just how good Michigan State’s defensive line has been under Burton’s guidance. They are a unit that consistently stops the run and gets after the passer.

In an effort to try and learn more about Burton as a coach, I reached out to someone earlier today who is familiar with both Burton and the Michigan State program. Here is some of what I was told. Again, this is all according to our source.

– “OU will probably have to pay for a premium for Burton because I can tell you that Michigan State loves Ron, and they aren’t going to let him go without a fight. If the Sooners offer him, it’s going to be a bidding war.”

– As much as Burton seems to be respected for his ability to coach, apparently he may be even more valuable as a recruiter. “Before Burton came, the guys (MSU staff) wouldn’t even recruit Chicago because they felt like it was just too hard to pull kids out of there. Since Burton came, however, he’s got a bunch of top recruits out of that area. He even recruits Texas.”

– When he arrived, Burton completely turned the Michigan State defensive line around. He is a guy that commands a lot of respect and gets a lot of out of his players. The turnaround on the line at since his arrival speaks for itself.

– He is very well liked by his players and by really almost anyone that meets him. “He’s a salt of the earth kind of guy, really humble and really cool guy…he can talk about anything and he’s dialed in…he’s not one of those football guys that can only talk about football. He can connect with you on a lot of different subjects.”

My source did mention Burton has a son who is a walk-on at Michigan State and that if OU were to offer, they were not sure what (if any) type of role that could play in a potential decision to leave. Obviously, a walk-on spot could likely be made available at OU if that was a deciding factor.

At this point we do not have any confirmation as to whether or not there has been any contact between Burton and OU. We simply do know his name is one that has been mentioned within the program as a potential candidate.

Either way, my vote is for Burton to be THE guy OU targets in this search. In my opinion, you have to make him tell you no before you move on to anyone else.

That said, odds are there will be other candidates and we will be looking into those over the next several days.

Houston DL coach should be on the list as well

  • PlayLikeaChampion says:

Ron Burton was mentioned by most media outlets the last hire in 2015 before Diron Reynolds was brought on board. Any coach associated with Mich State’s defense has been a hot commodity on the coaching trail over the last few years.

Mich State’s defense is a traditional 4-3, so that’s why many thought Burton wasn’t in the running in 2015 once Stoops recommitted to his 3-4 scheme during the search last time.

Mike Stoops has hired a 3-4 DL coach named Monty and a 3-4 DL coach named Reynolds.

It would be an unconventional approach to hire a 4-3 now just after Mike Stoops had a long presser outlining his 3-4 plans and personnel to finally support his 3-4 base defense.

    I guess anything is possible.

Whoever it is, he better have deep roots recruiting Texsa.

If this guy can open pipelines like he did in Chicago he can go into Texsa and do the same. stick it to charlie strong and his UTerus cronies.

  • Malicong says:

I am ok with Burton. I don’t know if he is the perfect fit but OU could do much much worse.

  • PlayLikeaChampion says:

Michigan State didn’t sign one recruit outside of IL, MI, OH, NJ in their entire recruiting class.

So, no TX, CA, FL, GA…for 2016.

Only three Texans in four years, 1 DB, 1 WR, 1 OL.

    DE – 6’6″ 230lbs / IL
    DT – 6’4″ 287lbs / IL
    DT 6’4″ 275lbs / IL

Ron Burton appears to have great ties in the state of IL.

Since OU is moving to the B1G anyway, Ron Burton can be the area expert.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

You have to take into consideration it’s still MSU. It’s not OSU. But if he came to OU, the recruiting would pick up in many areas. Simply stated, OU has more clout in Cali and the South than MSU…Think of it has a top Insurance guy leaves Paul and Marge’s Insurance House for New York Life. More people are going to open the door for the NY Life rep.

    • Good post. I think if OU moves anywhere though, it will be to the Pac 12. Several years ago Stoops even indicated that was his preference. Guess no one really knows for sure.

  • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

Didn’t read any of the post yet (I will just after this post) because when I saw the picture of Coach Burton from Michigan State I was all “Yes.”

  • Boom says:

While Burton is impressive in all areas, would this hire hint as to what conf OU may end up in? I’m sure this would be reading way to much into it. Curious about the different scheme MS is playing and Burton’s scheme but I’m sure he’s versed in both. Also, how long will it take to make inroads in TX and SE.

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

    Sounds good to me.

  • PlayLikeaChampion says:

    4-3 Sean Spencer – PSU
    3 -4 Tosh Lupoi – Bama
    4-3 Marion Hobby – Clemson
No Idea Dan McCarney – Open (Was Ass-HC/DL Meyer at FL)
3-4 Ben Albert – Duke via Boston College
    No idea Calvin Thibodeaux
3-4 CJ Ah You – Vandy
    3-4 Ed Orgeron – LSU
    4-3 Tray Scott – UNC
    3-4 Bo Davis – Alabama
    3-4 Oscar Giles – Houston

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

This coach from MSU has a track record just short of Orgeron.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

      Add Elston from Notre Dame.

    • Oscar says:

Isn’t Chris Wilson a DL coach also?

      • SamSooner says:

Kent State is my alma mater. A lot of pro players come out of that school.

        • Oscar says:

I have a couple of my ex students there now.

          • SamSooner says:

Great school. They will be challenged, academically.

          • Steve-O says:

Sam, what the hell are you talking about? More NFL players than most MAC schools but fewer than Kansas isn’t “a lot of pro players.” Nor is Kent State a great school.

          • SamSooner says:

            How would you?

          • SamSooner says:

I’m going to assume since there was not a /s in your post that you are serious. How would you know? Name as many players as you can that played football at Kent State, who also made it to the NFL.

Considering the caliber of players available to Kent, that a success rate of 1 player every 4 years is a lot.

          • Steve-O says:

There’s this thing called Google that allows you to search for things like the number of players Kent State has put in the NFL. I think there were seven currently, including Antonio Gates, who didn’t play football at Kent State. Since this list was alphabetical by college, I noticed that Kent State had fewer current NFL players than Kansas. I checked a few other MAC schools, and CMU had more, but the others I checked had fewer. Then I checked a list that listed every NFL player ever by school, and while Kent State had more than CMU, it had fewer than Miami, Toledo, and Northern Illinois (but not Akron). I didn’t check any more. So to answer your question, that’s how I would know.

Saying a school puts out a lot of NFL players is different than saying they put out more NFL players than schools that get similarly talented players. It’s like saying “Kent State puts out a lot of good commenters at TFB.” While that doesn’t seem to be the case as far as I can tell, maybe if you adjust for the caliber of student they get, it’s better than you’d expect.

          • SamSooner says:

Now that you’ve answered that question, tell me what you know about their academics. What are you using to draw your conclusion or qualify your statement that Kent is not a great school? Are you an alumni?

          • Steve-O says:

I know that I would have at some point in my life heard that Kent State was a great school if it was a great school. So I double checked, saw that the middle 50% of their incoming freshmen scored from 20 to 25 on their ACT, and confirmed that it’s not a great school. You’ll probably proffer some idiosyncratic definition of “great school” though, like you did with “a lot of pro players.”

See you around, Slick. I’ve never met a person I didn’t like upon the first time meeting them.

          • Steve-O says:

In person I’m much less likely to call out people on their BS like Kent State is a great school that puts out lots of professional football players, so you’d probably like me just fine. I’m only an asshole on the internet.

          • SamSooner says:

I would much rather like you. We can start over again if you like.

Hi, I’m SamSooner, nice to meet you.

            What say you?

    • I doubt most of these guys would consider OU. For sure not the Clemson, AL, LSU and maybe not the Mich State guy. ND guy might. Not sure I want a guy from PSU – doubt he has any recruiting experience in the areas we need. NC and Houston guys would surely consider, but neither are from defensive powerhouses. Not familiar with Ben Albert. The Houston guy probably has some good recruiting connections in Texas. IMHO, if we cannot get a very good proven coach, then let’s go after an up and coming young guy that can recruit – both OU guys or the DL coach from Utah.

  • Stephen says:

I don’t know what front we’re going to go with but outside of Burton I think we should look at the coaches from Utah State, Houston, and take a shot at Clemson.

  • RBear says:

Not going to jump on any bandwagon this quick- just like to see a list of candidates develop and for OU to do their due diligence.

    • Jpsooner23 says:

I said the same thing when K posted the write up on Diron. Didn’t think much about it, then BAM. Maybe K is giving us another Nostradamus hint.

      • RBear says:

Supa-K could very well be right- I’d just like to see a few more names being tagged as “strong candidates” by OU.

  • TSFFKAG says:

According to Super K’s reseach, we reeeeeaaally need Coach Burton. He seems like a perfect fit!

  • Randy says:

I like Jimmy Brumbaugh, dont think BS and MS would do that to Mark Stoops. But would be a hell of a hire.

  • Sooner Ray says:

At least he “looks” like a D line coach, big, mean, and all business.

  • Jeremy Phillips says:

Burton’s name was brought up last time as well . it obviously didn’t happen but is someone that fans wouldbe in favor of..

  • j l says:

Current salary is only 202k, surely OU could blow that out of the water, right?

I mean, we paid reynolds 275k coming as a QC coach, so we could make an offer of like 350 k to burton possibly?

  • Zack says:

This seems like a guy anyone should target. Problem for me is that he’s a 4-3 guy. And that would likely mean a change up front for our scheme, which is not a terrible idea but we’ve recruited 3 years now for the 3-4 so switching the front would probably cause attrition.
My guy would be CJ ah you. His familiarity with the staff and the players would be huge as far as continuity goes. He would be able to give us a seemingly advantage in recruiting Polynesian kids.

    • PlayLikeaChampion says:

Any video of CJ in an interview? He was a captain at OU, all Big12, and five years with the Rams. So, his leadership is paying off. Not sure, if Bob or Mike want more experience, but then again as you stated the 3-4 is important. Time will tell.

    • soonersd says:

I’ve heard MS mention that now that he has the personnel he would like to be able to run a little of both 3-4 and 4-3 (we may have done this some last season). Seems like if we have hired 3-4 guys the last few seasons and if that is MS’s specialty that if we are going to run both (or continue to run both) it would make sense to maybe bring in a 4-3 guys for good knowledge/balance of both.

    • Super K says:

Good note Z, but one thing to remember is OU did play multiple fronts/techniques even this past yr. The b gap players play multiple techniques then a gap players play 1 and 2 gap. Ultimately the guys they have on campus are multiple front guys. Neville can play a 0 or a 1. At his current weight, a guy like Campbell probably looks more like a 4 man from weak side end. A lot coaches nowadays teach their guys multiple techniques

    • TSFFKAG says:

I didn’t realize Polynesians were so race oriented? There are plenty of black, white and Hispanic recruit, too. Just sayin’.

      • Zack says:

There’s a reason they like Utah, Washington and Cali schools. Huge Polynesian populations there.

  • Breadburner says:

So Burton is going to get a raise at MSU…..

  • One guy I looked at that I really like is Ilaisa Tuiaka, the DL coach at Utah. Their DL has excelled under him. Another good point is that his recruiting responsibility is Dallas, Central CA, Hawaii and American Samoa. I also like the two OU guys already mentioned. MSU coach would be great, but if he is that good how long will he stay before he heads off to a head coaching job?

  • PlayLikeaChampion says:

Chris Kiffin – Ole Miss DL/Recruiting Coord?

Anybody? Nobody? Heard a horn DB coach was released, coached at Ole Miss.

    No details on either.

  • Dre White says:

I’m Impressed with Houston’s d-Line coach! HomeRun Texas Recruiting ability and that is where our primary dLine prospects come from!

  • Robert Boone says:

I think Burton’s son just signed on to play at MSU.

    • JD says:

      Do walk ons sign

      • Robert Boone says:

He is a preferred walk-on, which means he is guaranteed a spot on the roster, and that coach Burton now has family ties there.

        • MoJoOkie says:

Not sure how you would pull a valued coach from Michigan State for the same level at OU. OU has been my only school for my entire life, but I cab acknowledge that there are other schools with at least similar clout. I don’t see getting him away from MSU especially with his son’s situation. JMHO

        • JD says:

But has he signed anything. Is he currently going to school there. If not then he’s not locked in per se

  • Jeff says:

38-0, the MU line coach is at Miami now he needs to get a call!

  • Cam says:

I was hoping for a new coach for my birthday.

  • Defend Colfax says:

Conference realignment speculation. Nice weather today.

  • blaster1371 says:

Would think there would be some younger position coaches out there for the taking. Those guys seem to have the energy and intensity that attracts players. I don’t think any program is too small to look into; getting a coach from the MAC or CUSA who has demonstrated the coaching ability should trump OU snobbery about not getting a dude from a blue blood program.

  • Robert Boone says:

A&M’s defensive ends coach Terry Price is one of the best recruiters.

  • cbertus6 says:

I know I don’t post very often on here but I just wanted to state that I am on the Tosh Lupoi bandwagon if that is in any way possible. He would be a MAJOR recruiting asset and also has a bunch of California connections. I know people want someone who knows Texas but this guy is incredible. He was even Scout Recruiter of the Year a few years ago.

  • soonermusic says:

Love the report on Burton. it will be fascinating to see how this goes.

Two positive things: Stoops has been actively on the coach search trail more than once lately, so he is even more tuned in than he might otherwise be as to everyone who’s out there. Second, appearing in the playoffs at least gives the appearance 🙂 of a program in strong shape and ready to contend nationally in the immediate future/present. That can do nothing but help make the job more desirable. I know, I know… it’s OU…but every little bit helps sometimes.

I think Stoops is very aware of what balance he needs to strike between aggressive talented recruiter, and fabulous nuts and bolts coach. If he needs to lean in one direction more than the other, I think he knows exactly what he’s looking for, and knowing his staff as he does, would be in the best position to make the proper determination on that.

I would anticipate an exceptional hire.

  • OUBmrSnr72 says:

Let Reynolds take Boulware and Kish with him, move Gundy back to RBs, let Mike coach the LBs (we’d get the same production), and go hire the best WR, SPECIAL TEAMS, and Dline coaches we can get. That’s the only chance OU has of winning a NC before Bob retires.

  • JB says:

I agree. Burton is the caliber of coach we need. We need a technician and recruiter. Monty was the better recruiter, Diron was the technician. Burton would be both. And we need even more recruiters on the staff. And we need to open the purse strings. You get what you pay for in coaching.

  • Jim Casy says:

Texsa looking for a DB coach now…

  • Mr. Jones says:

I’m sure this has been said as I’m late to the party but I would love the addition of Burton. He has (1)proven he can land big-time guys in his school’s natural recruiting area and (2)proven he can coach a group to produce at a high level on the field.

  • TSFFKAG says:

When will Ron Burton be named the new DL coach?

  • TSFFKAG says:

Will the next DL coach sign a 5 year agreement?

  • NVSooner says:

There is something I just like about this…
    – As much as Burton seems to be respected for his ability to coach, apparently he may be even more valuable as a recruiter. “Before Burton came, the guys (MSU staff) wouldn’t even recruit Chicago because they felt like it was just too hard to pull kids out of there. Since Burton came, however, he’s got a bunch of top recruits out of that area. He even recruits Texas.”
