Open Post | Thursday, Feb. 18th (UPDATE 4:52 pm)

Roshauud Paul: This week the Sooners offered 2017 ATH Roshauud Paul (Bremond, TX), who tells TFB the OU coaches are looking at him as an inside wide receiver. Paul also mentioned that he’s actually visited Oklahoma before. He was at the 2015 season opener against Akron.

Now that he has an offer, Paul said he wants to make a return trip to Norman at some point this spring but has yet to set a date. – (Super K)

New Running Back Offer: Last night Oklahoma extended an offer to 2017 running back Kennedy Brooks out of Mansfield, TX.

Player Note | Joe Mixon: A quick note on Joe Mixon, I’ve been told that he is, to my surprise, a little heavier right now than where he played at most of last season. Which, to me, sounded like a bad thing as I thought watching him last year he could stand to cut something like 5-10 pounds and be a little quicker.

But apparently despite being heavier, he’s actually leaner now than he was last season. In fact, I was told he’s actually put up better times during workouts as compared to this time last year. Which based on what I’ve been told is a bit of a common theme among the team as a whole, as a number of guys are already in better shape going into the spring than they were at this same point last year. – (Super K)

Defensive Line Coaching Search: The only additional note to add since Wednesday’s update was that I can confirm there has been discussion between the OU staff and Michigan State defensive line coach, Ron Burton.

Again, the Sooners are speaking to multiple candidates about the defensive line position. And while I cannot officially confirm who all those people are, I have good reason to believe one of them likely is Penn State defensive line coach, Sean Spencer. I say that only because he was someone Oklahoma spoke to last year prior to hiring Diron Reynolds. In fact, one source confirmed Spencer actually interviewed for the job a year ago.

Although I continue to hear that Burton is their top target, I’d be pretty surprised if they don’t at least bring in a couple guys to go through the interview process. Both because it’s the smart thing to do, weighing multiple options, and because there is certainly no guarantee they’d be able to snag Burton away from Michigan State. – (Super K & Brandon)

– UPDATE (4:52 pm): Okay, so if you’ve been hanging out at all in the comments today or listening to OKC radio earlier you may already be aware of the comments Dusty Dvoracek made regarding a potential hire for OU’s vacant defensive line coach position. If you’re not already familiar, Dvoracek mentioned there was a chance a hire could be announced as soon as tomorrow (Friday) or possibly this coming weekend.

Now that would lend one to believe Bob Stoops & co. have identified their man for the job. Perhaps even interviewed and/or extended an offer to said candidate. We cannot confirm whether or not that is the case, nor will we speculate as to whether or nor a hire has been made. We are simply deferring to Dvoracek, who in the OKC market has arguably as many ties to the OU program, obviously being a prominent former player, as anyone. So if he’s floating the possibility of something potentially coming down the pike, then it stands to reason the guy probably knows what he’s talking about.

Again, as tempting as it might we’re going to resist the urge to speculate as to who it might be. We can, however, pass along that after hearing Dvoracek’s comments TFB reached out to a number of sources working to confirm a name. And while we’re still waiting to hear back from several people, we did receive word from one source close to the Vanderbilt program. As recently named defensive line coach, and former Sooners QC coach & defensive end, C.J. Ah You was a name many people had thrown out as a possible candidate for the OU job. However, our Vanderbilt source said based on what they know at this time, there has been no indication given that Ah You is going anywhere.

Know that we are chasing this hard right now and when/if we can bring you any more information on things, we will make our absolute best effort to do so as quickly as possible. But as of right now, you know what we know.

  • Matt says:

I posted this question on the daily news and no one responded so I figure I’ll try again. Does anyone know what position Lampkin and Gallimore are playing in the 34? Are they both ends?

    • Golfluvr13 says:

They are both listed as DT’s.

    • Tipman says:

Lampkin is outside and Gallimore is inside but not 100% sure

      • Jordan Esco says:

I’d expect you are correct, but once they start spring ball I’d suspect we can get everyone a more definitive answer.

      • Matt says:

ah ok, a lot of analysts projected Gallimore at end because that’s what he played in high school and he’s so athletic. I’d like to see him and Lampkin rotating at end across from the beast that is Charles Walker.

        • Tipman says:

He was up to 340 at one point which is why he had to move inside – I heard he lost weight but not sure where he is at now

    • Super K says:

Gallimore is a nose that the staff believes is quick enough to play either spot. Lampkin was also seen as strictly a DE.

      • Matt says:

ah ok great. Would not want to be an offense facing a line of Walker-Gallimore-Lampkin… Bama showed me what a dominant 34 defensive line can do. I always thought 34 defensive lines were more about stuffing the run but they showed that quick big men can form a great pass rush out of the 3 down line also. Pumps me up.

        • j l says:

Wouldnt lampkin and walker both play SDE though? the other end(WDE) spot is for the smaller kids like bledsoe, ward, roberts, etc.

          • Matt says:

are those two positions different in a 34? I know that Tapper is smaller than Walker but I am wondering if they really want smaller guys there?

          • j l says:

As far as i know, you still have strong and weak side defensive ends in a 3-4. Weakside are the smaller pass rushers i would think.

Wouldnt make sense to me that bledsoe and lampkin would occupy the same position despite 40 pounds difference.

  • SoonerMagic76 says:

Cool to hear we have some guys getting into even better shape. Mixon being a little stronger but still leaner and faster is a scary thought

    • Matt says:

agreed, have you seen the photo of the defensive line together after a workout? They all look like beasts carved out of stone.

They also think Ah You is the best candidate regardless of his lack of experience. Bad article.

      • PlayLikeaChampion says:

It a bad article because they like Ah You over the others? That’s called a bad pick, if OU has access over the others.

        I’d pick:

        #1 Bo Davis
        #2 Ben Albert
        #3 Ron Burton
        #4 Sean Spencer

        • Stephen says:

It’s a bad article because it reads like a quick Google search or its based off a Landthieves post (from a week ago) and they just chose a quick fan favorite.

Jordan/Super K, should we expect a DL coach hire soon? By soon, I mean as early as this weekend. Spring practice is right around the corner.

    • Jordan Esco says:

My guess at this point w/b no, at least in terms of a hire by this weekend. Still a little over two weeks before spring ball starts, s/b plenty of time for them to get a guy in here.

  • Walter Sobcek says:

Sounds like Mixon had added muscle and lost some body fat, which is not unsual for young men of that age who train properly. Looking forward to see how looks in spring ball.

        • Jim Casy says:

Love the Kennedy Brooks kid out of Mansfield. He carried Mansfield to the 6A state final game last year. He is very hard to bring down.

  • Jason Vos says:

players that need to try different positions this year

Stanvon Taylor – CB to WR
Hatari Byrd – SS to ILB
Dwayne Orso – DT to OT

I know a lot of ppl think Quick is better suited at CB. I may be in the minority, but I think he is better at WR

    • rainydaze114 says:

I think Byrd would be better suited on the outside.

    • Matt says:

It sounds like that will happen with Taylor and Orso but IMO ILB has too complicated of reads to learn in one year when you’ve never played it. I know Byrd has good numbers but he may just be a weight room guy.

    • Jordan Esco says:

I believe K told me the Quick @ CB experiment is done (at least for now).

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

I’m excited if Mixon added weight without slowing him down. I wish Perine however would get back to 240 because it seemed like he broke more tackles the year before. Part of that however could have been the experience in the line opening up holes so he could get up to speed though.

  • Himself says:

I said earlier this week that this team was tired…looks like I am right again. Now after last nights joke, they are also suffering from internal disorder! Why is Dying Shanker getting so much playing time? He is history! Better look to next year. This team won’t get past the 16 and will be lucky to get a 3 spot in the tournament…probably a 4 spot away from home. They will lose to WVU & Texas. Looking OUgly!!!

doesn’t sound like it based on the sales pitch recruits seem to be getting

      • Matt says:

Maybe everyone is making too much of this statement but on signing day Mike said he wants to play a traditional 3-4, if that’s true and he wants to keep using a Striker-type, he’s going to have to have the studs of studs to play that position: a big linebacker that can cover and rush the passer.

        • PlayLikeaChampion says:

Mike won’t have a Striker role on the field. That’s why he recruited Mark Jackson to replace that role. He wants 240lbs to 250lbs Spinners over the TE not 218lbs Strikers going forward.

          His words not mine.

          • Matt says:

well I think Jackson could replace Bond and Kelly could replace Striker, Kelly is excellent in coverage. But those two are hopefully at least a year down the road. This year, I can’t see Deberry or Obo being great in coverage, although even Lindley did alright in coverage last year. Maybe Mike knows how to coach big men to cover…

I just feel bad for the current DL guys. Recruited by/ worked under Monty, then Diron. Will be their 3rd DL coach in 3 years. • j l says:

basically you are in school for a year without a scholarship. You can practice, but cant play. It also dosent start your eligibility clock, so you still have 5 years left to play 4.

          • j l says:

Couple edits to that, apparently you dont get to practice with the team, always thought you did.

You also have to take less than a full load(usually 12 hours) so your eligibility clock dosent start.

I saw him on the Daily News thread a couple of days ago, seemed pretty tame at the time. Must of been his stunt-double.

    • cush creekmont says:

I was rather hoping the psychiatric orderlies had found him after he left the day room.

    • Jake says:

himself? Are we talking about Queen?

    • Sooner Man says:

      No ticket

  • OceanDescender says:

Pretty incredible that that is Brooks’ freshman highlight reel and he’s popping off long runs on the likes of cedar hill. Watched him some in the playoffs last fall and the dude is an absolute workhorse (type of kid who would work his butt off to reach greatness at an OU level). I hope we land him!

  • RBear says:

    Slow times call for creativity-

What is the significance of this number next season?

    1,057

  • Jeremy Phillips says:

Dusty just dropped some knowledge.. “I wonder if we might find out who the new DL coach is before the weekend, like tomorrow.” he then went on to talk about Thibs resume.

  • Jake says:

Dusty Dvoracek said on The Sports Animal that an announcement could “possibly come out prior to/or during this weekend” regarding the hiring of a DL Coach at OU.

Cites Calvin Thibodeaux as a “potential home-run hire” (if he ends up getting the job), but said that he would definitely be “an excellent fit” and great “developer/coach for our D-Line”.

Also spoke highly of his ability to recruit the state of TX.

    • Jordan Esco says:

I mean who am I, but I think ‘home run hire’ is a little bit of bias showing from one former teammate to another.

Could it ultimately prove to be a home run? Of course. But on Day 1 will it be viewed as a home run? I’d argue there is very little chance of that being the case.

      • Matt says:

I’m more concerned with a great teacher than recruiter. Montgomery was a great recruiter but the defensive line really wasn’t anything special under him even with a hoss like Philips.

        • Jordan Esco says:

That’s due in large part b/c he wasn’t allowed to utilize the approach/style he would have otherwise done, or at least that’s what I’ve been told.

      • Jake says:

Yeah, I’m not sure if you heard him say it on radio or not. But, he clearly was saying it was more of a great-fit (makes sense) type of hire versus a forgone, home-run hire.

I believe his exact words were along the lines of….

“I don’t know if you could consider it a home-run hire” & then referenced “waiting it out to see”. But his primary emphasis was on the fact that the hire would make a lot of sense and he would fit well within the current coaching staff.

        • Jordan Esco says:

I did. You summed it up perfectly, IMO.

          • Jake says:

            Okay, cool.

I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t misrepresenting him commenting on the prospective hire of Calvin… Like: “BEST THING SINCE SLICED BREAD”, ha.

          • Jordan Esco says:

nonono, didn’t mean to imply you were on my part either, to be clear. I do think some of his ability, or at least accomplishments to this point, in terms of recruiting are being somewhat overstated, but he’s also never walked into a house w/ that OU logo on his shirt so I’m not about to make any final judgments at this point.

          • Jake says:

OU football versus KU football. I could see how there might be a slight bump in recruiting prowess with a logo exchange ☕️?.

Good stuff- thanks for weighing in, btw.

          • Jordan Esco says:

Thank you for convo & recapping Dusty’s comments 🙂

          • Jake says:

Always glad to transcribe some radio talk ?

          • Jassa Langford says:

Who was Bledsoe’s recruiter at Kansas?

        • Jeremy Phillips says:

Thibs attachment to Houston is what could make it a homerun.

          • Jake says:

Exactly. I think everybody is confident in his abilities as a coach and developer. But his recruiting prowess in TX would certainly make him a true home-run hire.

          • Jordan Esco says:

I need someone to provide some specifics as to this “recruiting prowess”, preferably something tangible.

          • RBear says:

Same with Ron Burton IMO- I asked earlier for someone in the know to provide a list of DL he’s developed and didn’t get much in the way of a reply- would like to see that list.

          • Doobie74OU says:

Don’t know a complete list by any stretch but he has Shilique Calhoun in the draft this year. Ranked #53 overall, and #8 DE, 3 time All Big 10+2 and 3 time 2nd team All-American
Also I see that he has 5 former players in the NFL
            Jerell Worthy
            Marcus Rush
            Micajah Reynolds
            William Gholston
            Domato Peko
I don’t know if this means anything, just what I could find real quick!

          • Birddawg says:

Sean Spencer has put guys in the NFL too.

          • RBear says:

Thanks- helps to know that he’s “done that”

          • Jake says:

            Preferably tangible… lol

          • Jordan Esco says:

haha, well I mean something more than “he’s from Houston” or something like that. b/c that doesn’t tell me jack squat about whether or not he can recruit, be it down there or wherever. you know what I mean?

          • Jake says:

For sure. I’d rather not “swing and miss” with our DL Coaching hire.

          • hOUligan says:

OU has some real studs at DL right now and it would be a waste to not get someone in to develop those guys. If said hire can do that over the next couple of years, the recruits will come.

          • Jake says:

            Abso-freakin’-lutely

          • Jordan Esco says:

That’s a dangerous approach to take, and assuming something I don’t think coaches at this level, being paid as much as they are, have the luxury of making.

          • hOUligan says:

Dangerous to do what Bob did w/ his last DL hire, find a teacher who was not an accomplished recruiter? Just my opinion, but I liked that hire and that way of thinking.

          • Doobie74OU says:

Totally agree because a “swing and miss” DL coach makes it look like you need a new LB coach and DB coach as well because their units have no chance!

          • Jeremy Phillips says:

Well, for reference.. Matt Romar was committed to Thibs at Tulsa before Shipp offered him late.. ga’d at Houston, coached at Navarro JC where he recruited Houston, same when he was coaching DL at Tulsa & so on at Kansas.. this isn’t a coordinator hire, this is a position coach hire & Thibs has every bit the experience to qualify him for the job. I’m not saying he should be the no.1 target but he definitely deserves a look & possible interview.

          • Doobie74OU says:

Well all I can find is his top 9 recruits ever are 4 – 3* and 5 – 2* but 7 are from Texas and 2 from Kansas. I am not sure what qualifies as a great recruiter to Kansas Football!

          • Bob Edwards says:

I think you are considered a good recruiter at Kansas if the guy you recruit shows up with all his limbs and can walk.

          • Doobie74OU says:

Agree! I have always said if I was recruiting for Kansas Football my first stop would be Kansas Basketball 3rd String players. Try to convince them come play football and actually play instead of sitting on the bench. I guarantee the worst basketball player KU has is a top 5 athlete on the football team!

      • Bob Edwards says:

No, I think most of us have seen too many of Stoops OJT promotions fall through. The pressure is too high at OU to perform immediately to take a guy that is not ready to step in day one. That is usually a guy who has proven himself at a smaller school so the step up is not as big.

        • Jordan Esco says:

You’re not alone in that thinking from what I can gather, even if it’s a popular former player.

          • Bob Edwards says:

Former players, meh. Blake was a former player. Stoops had no ties to OU. I want the best one out there not blind loyalty to a guy because he did something fifteen years ago.

          • So is one of the best coaches and recruiters we have (a former player that is) – Cale Gundy.

          • RBear says:

Always hard for the “favorite son” thing to pan out

          • Jordan Esco says:

            Not for Mike 😉

          • Mark_in_VA says:

Blake may have permanently caused OU fans to approach popular ex players with at least some skepticism.

          • RBear says:

            FUJH

          • Jordan Esco says:

I don’t have a problem w/ it at all, assuming they are an accomplished coach/recruiter rather than looking to cut their teeth at their first ever or simply first “big time” job at a program the caliber of OU.

My issue is the ‘learning on the job’ aspect, like we saw w/ Heupel. At a place like OU, you should never target and/or have to settle for that type of coach.

          • Daryl says:

Jordan I agree that OU should never take a back seat to anyone in trying to hire coaches. As much as I wanted JH gone in the end when he first was hired as OC I thought he was a brilliant hire. Had shown he could recruit, had shown he could develop QBs, and had worked under two of the most prolific OCs in OU history. Everything said he would be a natural fit and then he crumbled. All that to say nothing is guaranteed so get who you think is the best!

          • Jordan Esco says:

I thought the exact same re: Heupel

    • PlayLikeaChampion says:

The word “potential” being the emphasis of his argument? I get it.

“An excellent fit” because he’s familiar with the program? Sure.

Most experienced? Not at all, but neither was Monty or Diron.

    • Eddie and Amber says:

I think Dusty’s analysis is spot on as a coach with “potential”. His career path is definitely trending up. Add that to his resume as a player and being from Houston … I’m excited if he rejoins the Sooner family as our DL Coach.

    • Doobie74OU says:

I am not saying it would be a bad hire or anything but can’t see Bob Stoops pulling the trigger if established guys like Burton are taking your calls and interested in the job.

  • soonerjunky says:

Anyone know if it’s assigned seating? Cost? I haven’t been since I was in high school.

  • PlayLikeaChampion says:

Who would Nick Saban hire if Bo Davis retired?

Hopefully, Bob Stoops uses that mindset and approach.

  • metzker says:

    Ok I got nothing,so see y’all tomorrow!

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

For the Thibodeaux discussion below, Bob would be wise to continue to hire people from outside his circle, mainly for new ideas and influences to be added.I think there was a good deal of complacency in the coaching staff not that long ago and new faces tend to keep things fresh. Though I am not opposed to CT getting the job, but only if he is the best candidate for the job, not he is getting it based on his former relationship to Bob Stoops.

  • Jordan Esco says:

    update added

    • Jeremy Phillips says:

Fwiw, I tweeted Dusty following what he said on the show today & his response was, “I’m not breaking any news, I’m just saying I researched Calvin & feel he’s qualified for the job. “

    • OUBmrSnr72 says:

Hmmmm…..after reading that update, I feel no more updated than I did before reading the update. 😉 I kid, I kid…….

      • Jordan Esco says:

Well, it sounds like we can probably (key word) rule out Ah You who was a guy at the top of a lot of people’s list. So while I’m obviously biased, I do feel like that is an update of sorts 🙂

        • SoonerOracle737 says:

          Definitely not a downdate.

        • BoomerDave says:

Can’t think Ah You would be on the top of too many people’s list seeing as how he’s never been a coach before nor ever recruited before. But I suppose the same thing could have been said about Reynolds last year and he did a great job on the field and a respectable job recruiting.

      • CrimsonNative says:

        Exactly

  • TSFFKAG says:

From all I hear, I think it’s a done deal. OU is going to hire a DL coach! LOL

  • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

This whole Thibs rumor and discussion has me somewhat nonplussed, just not really moved by it. And, if hired, would have me in an arms crossed skeptical posture for the entire season.

Marion Hobby. Ron Burton. Sean Spencer. Those coaches would get my excitement roaring. However, I’m not confident any would come to OU. Maybe Hobby.

  • j l says:

Burton would have more to work with here than he did at MSU, really hope they pull out all the stops for him.

  • PlayLikeaChampion says:

Hopefully, Bob will hire the candidate by next Friday. Take your time Bob.

Put your Nick Saban hat on and take off that Mike Stoops hat this round as you have two short-timers that just created unnecessary instability in recruiting and player coach continuity.

Swing for the fences this time, EXPERIENCED recruiter and EXPERIENCED 3-4 coach.

Bob throws too much money at inexperience. Josh Heupel was around $675k and Diron was around $275k, while guys like Ron Burton are at $220k.

Just do it right because you pay for it either way!

  • Birddawg says:

    Get the best coach.
Regardless of recruiting ties or coin.

  • SoonerinLondon says:

I won’t believe it until I see percentages from Deano.

  • SamSooner says:

I really hope it’s Burton. I hope they back up the Brinks truck. Make him a Co-DC so he can have some say and put his stamp on the type of defense he prefers. Come to OU where you’re going to be a DC in a few years.

  • RBear says:

The Big XII needs to do this yesterday, partner with Apple to have a Big XII Network stream its games on AppleTV- Win/Win!

    • Sooner Ray says:

Beats what we have now. I would even be for dropping texsa, taking the best of what’s left and joining with the best of the ACC offering Apple the rights to the very first Super Conference.

    • Soonercntry says:

That’s actually a pretty good idea

    • Spolarbear72 says:

      Piss on Apple!

    • Boomer4life says:

Gotta be heading that way eventually. .

    • cush creekmont says:

A forward thinking idea. If one just looks at the disruptive changes in the last 20 years with more of that in the second 10 of that 20, the hard-wired cable TV business is being attacked on all sides from internet based options. In their desperation to keep up, they offer multiple ways of viewing their content (phone, pad, laptop). Beyond the bundling of shows that is a remnant of the government granted cable monopolies, they are simply offering content. The public will move to the content and pricing that best suits them, which will pit cable providers against the hulu, Netflix, Amazon, Apple groups that produce their own content. And at some point, they will partner with or buy out the HBO, Starz, Showtime groups.

If OU’s use of web products and its own productions continues even with a Big 12 network, deep OU content will have a market for the worldwide cadre of Sooner followers. It seems to me that the marketing of OU is strategically well-placed for the future of entertainment transmission.

    • ccmosaic says:

I would create a channel that can be seen on Apple, Amazon, and ROKU. Sell that channel for $20.00 a month and I would trash the satellite in a second.

  • soonerinks says:

I just want the new DL coach to have very strong ties to Tx high school football. We must regain our footprint in Tx.

  • Spitting Bull says:

    Keep chasing and thank you!

    • blaster1371 says:

      Wasn’t he listed at 215 or 225? I’d bet all of Jordan’s money he isn’t even 200lbs.

      • Boomer4life says:

I was thinking the same thing! Get this one with Schimty!

      • Sooner Ray says:

Did you factor in brass balls? 🙂

      • Borba22 says:

Muscle weighs more than fat, and you still look lean. Wouldn’t surprise me if he was 215. Though everyone says he has the frame to add more; just wait until Schmitty gets a hold of him.

        • Bob Edwards says:

Yeah, at 6’3″ 215 is not that big if you are pretty lean. Buddy Hield is 6’4″ 214 for comparison.

        • Boom says:

I saw him last summer up close for several days at the Opening. He’s every bit of 220 and I’m sure by fall, he will be 225-230. He picked a pass in one game and ran 30 for a TD. Good hands.

        • Martin says:

Since he finally signed with OU, I’ll say it. Not to call him a ‘babyface,’ but compared to Perine.. Kelly looks like an 8th grader. Hopefully, he will be in Norman for a long five years and develop into a beast of epic proportions . Given Mixon’s development in just two years, I’d say Kelly is on his way.

      • Lane Gilstrap says:

I would take that bet. I saw him at last years spring game.

    • PlayLikeaChampion says:

I guess the horns down wasn’t even noticed? Caleb Kelly is an ambassador for the horns down.

  • 47 Straight OU Know says:

Probably spouting off wishful thinking, but is it possible that Burton jumped on the chance to get some of this #OUDNA? And we offered more than State was willing to pay?

  • Chris White says:

A part of me wants to go back to a 4-3 scheme. TCU has done fine using it and it is much more effective against the run and when we play out of conference. Just my opinion. I say this because I’m pretty sure Michigan State runs a 4-3 scheme
