Open Post | Monday, Sept. 28th (UPDATE 4:16 pm)

– Trevor Speights: As we noted in this past weekend’s Open Post, OU RBs coach Jay Boulware stopped by to visit 2016 RB Trevor Speights (McAllen, TX) and did wind up getting the OU offer we said was imminent.

https://twitter.com/TSpeightsRB/status/648236042563129344

I caught up with Speights following the news, who told me that he will visit Oklahoma for an official but has not yet decided on a date. That’s obviously a significant thing because Speights already holds a number of big offers, so to immediately decide a visit will happen, despite OU coming in later than most, seems to signify that it’s an offer he was waiting on.

That is corroborated by the fact Speights made a trip up to Norman back in February on his own dime. Credit to and Boulware and Cale Gundy for continuing to recruit guys, offer or not. – (Super K)

Jordan Parker: Perhaps the final piece to Oklahoma’s 2016 DB class will be Jordan Parker (Pittsburg, CA). And it sounds as though OU has a definitive date (for now) on which they’ll know their fate. Parker tweeted out the following over the weekend:

Parker is expected to be in Norman for his official visit this weekend, which follows a trip he just took to see Arizona State this past weekend. Then, as noted above, he expects to announce his decision. So it would appear OU may have the last chance to make a good impression.

Parker has mentioned that he has the closest relationship to Chip Viney out of all the coaches recruiting, which is something you seem to hear quite a bit when it comes to the OU grad assistant. More and more it’s starting to sound like OU is going to need to pull out the check book for Viney and find some way to keep him on staff.

With spread offenses, you need to have elite talent at the cover position. In order to do that, recruiting and the ability to properly identify talent are key. And even in Viney’s somewhat limited role as a GA, he’s done a tremendous job recruiting. – (Super K)

Ed Oliver: Had a chance to catch up with a source who has knowledge about Oliver’s recruitment. As most of you know, Oliver recently took an official visit to Oklahoma. I asked my source whether OU had a real chance, or if Oliver is definitively set on Houston.

This person said, “he (Oliver) enjoyed the visit…he’s thinking really hard on it, but with his brother going to the University of Houston it’s going to be hard…but he is definitely considering the Sooners.”

If I’m OU, I recruit Oliver all the way to the end even as slim as the chances of landing him may be. He is incredibly talented and it seems OU is one of the only schools he’s actually considering other than Houston. – (Super K)

– UPDATE (11:29 am): If you weren’t already aware, OU/Texas has been announced as an 11am (CST) kickoff — I’m sure someone will point out it was only a year or two ago, but when was the last time this game wasn’t an 11am kick? — and will air on ABC.

UPDATE (12:11 pm): Alex just spoke with 2016 LB Marvin Terry (Dallas, TX), who informed Alex that he just got word from OU this morning that it appears, as of now, they are no longer recruiting Terry. We don’t know the specific reason for this occurrence or whether OU may resume recruiting Terry at a later time. But it does appear that at the moment OU and Terry have parted ways.

UPDATE (3:38 pm): I have exchanged a few messages with a coach on the staff at Marvin Terry’s HS (SOC) and he tells me that their staff knows nothing about OU and Terry parting ways. We are still trying to find out if somehow Terry misunderstood or if OU simply hasn’t told the staff at SOC just yet.

UPDATE (4:16 pm): Exchanged a few more messages with a staff member at SOC and they are confirming what Terry was told. The staff member said they don’t know if the parting of ways is permanent, or if it’s just OU signaling that they aren’t going to wait for guys. But as of now, again, OU and Terry seem to have parted ways.

First and I like Speights speed

    • Jim says:

Sonny, if you watch the film, it’s obvious he does not run a 4.38, not even close. I questioned this on a different site, and it was verified by someone that he ran a laser-timed 4.62 at a camp. And you can see by his stride he’s not running a sub-4.4. Most guys’ strides take 1.5-2 steps to cover 5 yards when running that fast. He’s taking 2-2.5. He’s got tremendous change of direction, but he’s not that fast.

      • Sooner 4Ever says:

I was just about to make the same observation then I saw Sonny’s post and your spot-on reply. I like Speights. He has a lot of positives as a runner. Blazing speed isn’t one of them. Not intended as a knock on him; he has plenty of speed to play RB, but 4.38 listed at the start of his video is borderline Bagdad Bob territory.

I’m calling it this is the week/game that the media jumps on the OU hype train. The OU win is impressive the Offense looks amazing and the Defense comes to play and looks stellar. This is the first game off the year that OU plays a complete game and the Media hype vaults OU into the top 10.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

Ed Oliver is worth all the effort even if it is a minimal chance of getting him

  • hOUligan says:

Filed under FWIW – 247 is 100% on Parker to OU. Think, while not necessary, a good showing by the OU D this weekend and a W would make it happen. Hope the crowd is loud!!

  • gocommodores says:

The last time it was at 2:30 was 2007. I know this because the 2:30 kick allowed me to be released from the drunk tank and still make it to the game in time

  • Felix Fuentes says:

Tyrie Cleveland & Jordan Parker close? Cleveland didn’t have any tweets about the ASU visit

  • wynwilliams64 says:

Interesting. Maybe the JUCO LB out of Florida and Kelly as the two other LBs?

  • Cole says:

Well I think the coaches feel confident with Kelly, Juarez and Jackson.

  • Jesse says:

Maybe the coaches got some news that they liked?

  • Soonerfan24 says:

I’m typically an optimistic OU fan, but I’m very nervous about Saturday. I feel like WVU is WAY underrated. Am I the only one or are people getting the same feeling?

    • Jason Vos says:

Don’t see how anyone under rates a team that has dominated their first 3 opponents

    • Jofield says:

I think WV is starting to get that respect though. They are in the Top 25 now. Between WV and Tech, the pudgy middle section of our schedule looks a lot tougher now.

    • Sooner Ray says:

I will be sweating bullets and crushing cans. 🙂

    • SoonerfanTU says:

They haven’t played anybody this year, and typically haven’t played well in road conference games in the Big 12. OU will have to show up and play well, for sure, but if we do I could rather easily see OU winning this thing by 14-21 points.

      • Soonerfan24 says:

I hope you’re right. I just worry because they seem to be extremely talented and their secondary and passing attack are the strengths of their team

    • Randy says:

Me too.. Eerily.. VERY EERILY similar to TCU last year…

    • Stephen Dale says:

NO , you are not the only one…..I ‘m picking WVU by 2 td’s

    • CS says:

They are still a wildcard team, not willing to admit that they are very good based on who they have played.

One thing is certain, they have a really good defense, so our WRs not named Sterling need to step up, and we can certainly exploit their other corners not named Worley.

On the flip side, their offense is definitely not better than their last years offense, which had a very good QB and a stud WR. So, considering how our defense has improved, I will give us a 70-30 edge. But, if we lose the TO battle as we have done all our other games, this could get Tenn close. If we hold on to the ball, this could be a comfortable win.

    • Stephen Dale says:

Only Kansas / Iowa St can be considered a safe, sure win….OU could win most of their other games—or—lose them……..I like WV this Saturday on what seems to be a wet field…….

  • Jason Vos says:

They must have gotten some good news from another LB not named Caleb Kelly

  • Mizuno44 says:

Perhaps we received a silent commit from Caleb Kelly?

  • Daddy R says:

Well at least the Red River game is still on ABC..

  • j l says:

2010 was the last time it was a 230 kickoff.

Basically since UT crapped out its been 11 am.

  • Wilson says:

I hoping this team matures and gets better as the year goes along. I’m just not sure this is the year they reach critical mass (Playoffs) because of the o-line and the new offensive scheme. Still don’t have a real good feel for this team. You see the potential and the flaws. Sometimes its like watching Cinderella slopping the hogs. You know there is potential but will the hog smell get in the way..lol

  • Jofield says:

If OU is turning down a guy like Terry they must feel really good about their commits and silent commits.

    • Stephen Dale says:

or it could indicate OU has identified different needs which need to addressed in the current 2016 class………possibly more DB’s ?

  • Sooner Ray says:

Was hoping for 2:30 playing texsa. I have a business meeting until noon that morning, thank goodness for DVR.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

I shall be optimistic about Terry. OU got the silent commit from Caleb Kelly over the weekend.

  • Doobie74OU says:

Still need 2 LBs I think has been the prediction and even with Caleb Kelly we would still need one. I think they must have got more good news. Hopefully it was regarding another offer like Dontavious Jackson, Jordan Carmouche or Michael Divinity!

    • Sooner 76 says:

Assuming Kelly is coming, then the last LBer slot needs to be an ILBer. Jackson certainly fits that need.

  • Jason Vos says:

I think it might be Jordan Carmouche. That would be my guess

  • Mustvid says:

Trevor Speights is the perfect back for this offense. He does look smaller on film than what he is listed at though. Instant acceleration and long speed is rare.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

    Saw this yesterday. Hilarious

  • Soonerfan24 says:

    Via ESPN ($):

“Riley had built a reputation as an exciting offensive coordinator while operating the East Carolina offense, and has brought the same dimension to the beginning of his tenure at Oklahoma.

Recruits have already taken notice of what the new Sooners’ assistant has done with former walk-on quarterback Baker Mayfield through three games this season — OU ranks No. 10 in yards per game and No. 8 in passing yards per game.

Quarterback commit Austin Kendall is especially excited, given the expectation that he will one day be given the reins of Riley’s offense.

Kendall had some contact with Oklahoma’s previous coordinator, Josh Heupel, but Kendall decided to commit to Tennessee when Heupel was board. Kendall eventually decommitted from the Vols after-then UT offensive coordinator Mike Bajakian left for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Once he decommitted, Kendall heard from the newly appointed Riley, who convinced him to take a visit to see the Sooners.

‘He wanted to get me to campus as soon as possible because Coach (Bob) Stoops likes to offer people in person,’ Kendall remembered. ‘I took a visit and everything went really well. I was blown away with what Coach Riley said he was going to do and what he’s going to bring to the table. Right now he’s doing really well with it.’

Kendall sees the potential for a quarterback to thrive in the offense, which means opportunity for receivers and running backs as well.

ESPN 300 running back Devwah Whaley is one of those backs who sees what Riley is building in Norman and has been a major target for the Sooners.

‘Coach Riley is a great person and coach,’ Whaley said. ‘As soon as he got to Oklahoma he didn’t waste time on starting to recruit me. We’ve built a great relationship and Oklahoma is going to be back on top soon again. He’s an honest man and in recruiting that’s what you want to hear — the truth.’

The biggest challenges are ahead for Riley, as the Sooners still have to take on WVU, TCU, Texas, Baylor, Texas Tech, Oklahoma State and Clemson, but the offense is on the right track to remain successful for many years to come.”

  • Scott says:

So will Bandon Burton play WR?

  • Neworleanssooner says:

So we are in a position to now be turning away 4 star prospects like Marvin Terry?

  • Walter Sobcek says:

Big 12 has five teams in the Top 25. espn glossed over this as quickly as they could without being too obvious.

    • Easton says:

Same ratio as SEC had: half of the conference. And it was meaningless preseason rankings. Rank journalism, and hype show.

  • Borba22 says:

Must have missed it, but what was Esco’s reasoning for shutting down any Mique Juarez talk? He’s set to visit for the TCU game. Get him on campus and anything can happen. He’s also been mentioning OU alongside UCLA (considered his fav if he were to decomit) on his twitter recently as well.

    • Stephen says:

Probably because the chances are too small to measure. He has talked a lot about OU lately but it’s recruiting, there’s no way to decipher whether it’s genuine or for attention.

    • Jordan Esco says:

b/c the OVERWHELMING majority opinion is the kid isn’t leaving the west coast. and these kids say stuff all the time, some of it pans out while a lot of it doesn’t (but I’m sure you’re just as aware of that as I am).

if I, and countless other people much closer to this thing than I, am wrong then I’ll happily be the first person to admit it.

it’s already drawn comparisons to the John Houston situation last year b/c things are so similar. west coast kid that was never likely leaving, but some people had subscriptions they have to sell so they sold OU fans a bill of goods re: the Sooners’ chances. he (Houston) also visited and would talk up OU at times during interviews just like is happening now w/ Juarez.

again, I’d love to be wrong.

      • Easton says:

I’ve taken my view from his twitter page. At present, I don’t take anything from his twitter page to mean he is considering the sooners.

      • Borba22 says:

FWIW, the subscription site is saying the exact same thing you are. Just wanted to know if you guys were hearing the same thing, or it was something else entirely on why OU has 0 chance with JM.

  • Stephen says:

Ed Oliver is a beast! Not sure why so many choose to play for Houston than any other P5 school, must be the the uniforms or facilities…

Anyways, there’s no way Speights runs a 4.3 or 4.4. He makes some pretty good runs but the competition looks mediocre. Anyone from Texas know the level of competition he’s playing against?

    Also, silent commits all around.

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

His brother goes to UH, as for the rest maybe they thought it would be cool to stay home and make UH better but as time passes that idea isn’t as good anymore?

      • Stephen says:

Well not even just him, there’s a lot of highly recruited Texas guys committed or seriously considering Houston.

        • Soonerfandave84 says:

pretty weird but I doubt it holds up all season

          • Stephen says:

I hope not. No way should Houston be beating out Oklahoma for Texas recruits.

          • Easton says:

Well, you should look into what Tom Herman is doing down there. He is building a “…mini-Ohio-State…”, and he is doing an energetic job at it. Its not just a glaze over. There is a reason these kids love Houston in 2015.

          • holieway4ou says:

OU opens next season with UH in Houston. Hopefully Oliver will be on OU’s sideline.

        • Doobie74OU says:

I think it started out that several of them got together and talked and got each other excited about all going there together but it has already started to fall apart a little bit. Oliver may be one of the exceptions though as pointed out that his brother goes there and he is a local Houston Area kid.

          • CPSooner says:

Ask Dom Alexander if he’s glad he doesn’t play with his brother. I believe Derrick is the older brother, but little bro Dom didn’t follow.

        • EasTex says:

The other 5* kid that committed the same week as Oliver dropped his commitment weeks ago and opened his recruiting again.
The new coach there might have had an influence on some kids, after guiding the buckeyes offense to the MNC.

    • EasTex says:

Not sure about the level of compo in that area, you never see a team from the valley advance deep into the playoffs. McAllen Memorial lost in their first playoff game after going undefeated in district, probably to a San Antone school.
In 2014, Speight rushed 238 time for 2,655 yds(11.2ypc) and was High School Sports Magazine’s Player of the Year, a publication I am not familiar with.

      • Stephen says:

I knew I could depend on you, EasTex. Thanks for the info!

        • EasTex says:

No prob. Always have my Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine handy. 🙂
BTW, DCTF chose Katy’s Kyle Porter as Mr. Football at running back for 2015.

    • Jdizzle says:

That and Oliver’s brother plays for Houston…

  • Glocal Sooner says:

Couple of questions. I know it’s just Monday but we’ll be getting a list of visitors for the WVU game right? Are we no longer doing player evals and comparisons? Would be interested in seeing a comparison on some LB’s like the 2 commits and maybe a couple of our top prospects.

    • Doobie74OU says:

Not anybody official but Jordon said a few days ago they were trying to iron out the list because of the early kick off. And I agree about some info on the LBs I am real excited for this class even though it seems to be smaller than usual it will be filled with playmakers!

  • Doobie74OU says:

Trevor Speights has excellent size and speed! Could see him coming in and getting bulked up to about 210lbs and still being a low 4.4 guy. Looks like he would fit well with this offense!

  • KJ1123 says:

Physically Speights does’t jump out at me. What does jump out at me is he has good vision and patience. Would interesting to see what a college S & C program could do for him, like add some explosiveness through the hole.

  • Mike Reed says:

How will the weather affect the game this weekend? There’s a 60% chance of rain in the Tulsa area Saturday. What’s the forcast for Norman?

Mine, stolen from Stoops’ presser: “Hold Serve”.

Im really anxious to see if Farnok starts at LG This week. What you hearing KJ1123?

    • Zack says:

I’m good with that. He played well. I just don’t vote for that if it means Alvarez is benched I thought he played better at center than he has at guard.

    • KJ1123 says:

Late reply: He took reps there (@RG) yesterday. But the ones had the same lineup. Nila and Ty practiced.
