Open Post | Weekend, May 22nd – 24th (UPDATE Fri., 9:37 am)

Robert Barnes: Son of former Sooner, Reggie Barnes, 2017 DB Robert Barnes (6’2″ 185 – Southlake, TX) has already been picking up offers this spring. He added an Iowa offer this past week in addition to those he already held from Duke, Boston College, Nebraska & Oregon State.

Oklahoma has been by to visit Barnes a couple times during this spring period and the staff would like to see him in a camp setting. So Barnes is planning to be in Norman next month to make that happen. With a good showing it’s certainly conceivable that he could pick up an offer at that time. At nearly 6’3″ with great range and a solid pedigree, Barnes certainly has the look and athleticism of a Mike Stoops type of safety. – (Super K)

Cam Roane: Another camp attendee next month with be 2017 quarterback Cam Roane (6’2″ 195 – Colleyville, TX), who has been picking up a ton of interest with a number of big time programs in the area having visited this spring. In fact, Lincoln Riley is one of those who has stopped by recently. – (Super K)

– Chris Brown: Kerry Cooks and Tim Kish were in Houston this past week to check in with 2016 LB Dontavious Jackson and while taking in a practice, the OU assistant duo came away rather impressed with Jackson’s teammate, 2016 DB Chris Brown.

We spoke with Brown following the OU offer, and he says the Sooners will be a strong player in his recruitment. And he’s also planning a visit to Norman for later this summer. – (Brandon)

– Brey Walker: I went and watched the stud Southmoore 2018 offensive lineman yesterday during practice and was not disappointed. I’d even go so far as to say Walker is the best freshman OL I have ever seen. Even with being a 2018 kid, the attention has already started and will only continue to increase. OU has already offered, as have a number of other schools, and Michigan — who has been doing a lot of recruiting in the state this past week — also added their name to the hat with an offer on Thursday.

This will be a name you continue to hear more and more about, not only from an OK Preps perspective but nationally as well. – (Brandon)

– Keith Ford: As many of you are well aware by now, Ford is planning to transfer to Texas A&M. And somewhat surprisingly, he has given several interviews in which it can be construed as though he’s bad-mouthing OU and their staff.

It’s hard to see what purpose this serves considering Bob Stoops gave him a full release, preventing any restrictions as to where he would be allowed to transfer, and given the nature of the suspension that led to him being removed from the program this past spring.

Even being as unhappy with your situation as he has led everyone to believe he was, one would think you’d be much better served to at the very least be complimentary of your former school/staff. That’s if you even feel compelled to saying anything at all rather than simply choosing to focus on your future versus the past. And maybe these quotes are being misinterpreted, but again why even put yourself in a position for that to happen in the first place.

But to each their own I suppose. – (TFB)

– Asante Samuel & Benjamin Sapp: The Sooners offered teammates and 2018 defensive backs Samuel (5’10” 163 – Ft. Lauderdale, FL) and Sapp (5’10” 160 – Ft. Lauderdale, FL) on Thursday. Both have fathers who played in the NFL as well as pretty extensive offers lists already, especially for 2018 kids. It’s obviously super early for 2018 offers, but based simply on geography alone one would have to believe OU will have their work cut out for them here. – (TFB)

– Deonte Williams: Cooks continues to flood the market with offers, extending another on Thursday to 2016 DB Deonte Williams (6’1″ 218 – Plano, TX). – (TFB)

– Jordan Elliott: OU failed to make the cut for the 2016 DT, who did hold an offer from the Sooners. – (TFB)

– Ed Oliver: Just wanted to briefly address this topic as it seemingly overtook Twitter on Thursday night. If you weren’t already aware, Oliver is a 2016 DT and, according to many, one of the top players in the country. He committed to Houston last night and a gaggle of recruitniks lost their collective you-know-what on Twitter when it happened.

This isn’t related to OU in so much as despite being his very first offer, the Sooners weren’t really believed to be much of a player in Oliver’s recruitment. That said, if a school like Houston can start to land players like Oliver then it only further increases the difficulty for a school like OU to come in and recruit the state.

However, that is said with two major caveats. First, it’s just one kid. A talented one at that, but still just one guy. Second, it’s VERY much worth mentioning that Oliver has a brother on the Houston team and a former high school coach now on the Cougars staff as well. So in that regard it’s not exactly as though this is some major coup necessarily, but this is also a kid that had offers from schools like Alabama, LSU, Notre Dame, Texas, Texas A&M, and UCLA. So it’s not exactly something that can be completely disregarded either.

The point being we wouldn’t exactly be breaking news in telling you there is a propensity for Texas kids who would prefer to stay close to home if the right opportunity presents itself. And, yes, OU has had more than their fair share of success recruiting the state of Texas in the past, but again you don’t need us to tell you that hasn’t exactly been the case in recent years.

Between Texas A&M, TCU, Baylor, and even at times Texas Tech, the Sooners have missed out on kids that almost never would have been a possibility in years past. So if you’re going to add yet another in-state school like Houston that, in theory, (potentially) becomes a more attractive option, then it simply makes things that much harder for OU to pull talent out of Texas. – (TFB)

– Treyveon Williams: And before you casually dismiss what we were just saying above, check out the tweet above from Jordan Elliott and that No. 4 team as well as this tweet from 2016 RB and OU offer Treyveon Williams.

Admittedly, it’s the smallest of sample sizes but it also illustrates the points we were making above. Certainly no reason to sound the alarms just yet, but it’s just something to keep in mind. – (TFB)

– UPDATE (Fri., 9:37 am): Rivals’ Auburn site is reporting that Michigan grad transfer, Blake Countess, will take an official visit to Oklahoma May 29-31.

Good info today fellas, much appreciated. Hope everyone has a safe and blessed Memorial Day!

      Same to you

You too, Lincoln. And may everyone take a break from the happy fun times this weekend to reflect upon lives lost, both in and out of uniform. I know I’ll be making some visits to honor some old friends.

  • Kevin Fielder says:

While I can’t say I’m not shocked that one of the highest rated DT’s in TX committed to the Cougs, it is early and things can change. I like OU’s renewed “beating of the bushes” in and around their own state, and their willingness to change and look nationwide, especially in areas where there is a large alumni base. The next two years will be critical to the program and to Bob’s decision of a retirement date.

    • bmrsnr says:

Looks like Tom Herman of Houston is trying to replicate what Miami did, trying to lock down home town players in a talent rich city. While it will make things more difficult for OU, I think this would hurt A&M, LSU and OSU more since they recruit the city heavy.

  • Cole says:

Isn’t countess the one that was in the video that went viral because he was dancing? Lol

  • Cole says:

I think with Keith ford, it’s more of a he got beat out by a freshman and is embarrassed and it is his only way to coop with it. I was happy for him until I heard of him badmouthing the coaches.

    • kokevo says:

      I feel the same way.

    • Zack says:

He’s lucky he had stoops as his HC or else he would be sitting out next year regardless

    • KJ1123 says:

Yeah shows immaturity. If you leave a program, just say it didnt work out. Dont finger point just to save face. Teams change coaches non-stop, EVERY kid playing ball needs to understand that.

    • Malicong says:

I think he went beyond that and was saying aTm was where his heart was out of high school and God made sure it happened for him to go there and stuff like that. I lost a lot of respect for him yesterday.

  • kokevo says:

I cant help but feel so negative about recruiting right now. I know me feeling like this isn’t helping anything but if ou can go win some games next year this should change.

  • Jason Vos says:

Whats the latest with Nick Harvey? Why is he’s transfer taking so long? Keith Ford’s didnt take that long

  • vargo05 says:

In addition to Houston now becoming a possible new combatant in the state of Texas, I’d think that SMU, with Chad Morris and his staff, could potentially be another obstacle OU may have to deal with going forward.

    • Jordan Esco says:

      Good point.

    • Mr. Jones says:

I never thought we’d see the day when the top 3 recruits in Texas were committed to A&M, Baylor and Houston.

    • mgcsooner says:

SMU could be another obstacle to OU/UT and the B12 as a whole, more so if the B12 ever becomes stupid enough to allow them in.

      • SoonerfanTU says:

I don’t think SMU would ever be an option. Houston would be more likely, and I really think they’d do everything possible to stay away from adding another Texas school. But you are right, if they did get into the Big 12, recruiting the state of Texas would become very tough.

  • jdub says:

Given that he’s just a sophomore & already 6’3″ & 185 lbs, & given his bloodlines, does Barnes have the potential to grow to around 220-230 lbs? Seems to me he’d turn into one heckuva sideline-to-sideline OLB.

  • Jason Vos says:

Time to invite Houston to the Big 12. Would affect recruiting, but at least we move away from 10 teams

  • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

Resist it, Keith. You got two more good years. Cut your losses and plow a new path. It won’t be the last disappointment you experience, believe me. #life #hashtagsMakeMeHip #hashbrownsMakeMeSalivate

  • Jason Vos says:

I like coach Cooks strategy, offer 30-35 DB’s, and you will end up with 4-5. Law of averages says so.

He’s used it in the past with Notre Dame, and its worked

  • Boom says:

Keith Ford, If Sumlin has this so called respect for Stoops, then you would think he would pull Ford aside and tell him to cool it on his remarks and focus on moving forward.

    • Rene Goupillaud says:

Sumlin tolerated Johnny Football’s antics. Bob would have set him on the bench. That’s really all one needs to know.

Bomar gets paid When he isn’t working, gone. Johnny gets paid big bucks for autographs, Sumlin (after public pressure) sits him for a half. That’s all one needs to know.

Kingsbury won’t release a walk-on, Bob gives a complete release to a 4/5 star running back who started before he got injured last year. That’s all one needs to know.

There’s a right way and lots of wrong ways to handle things. Glad we have Bob and those schools have their coaches.

  • jlee says:

FWIW: 4 star DB Chad Clay, Peachtree Ridge HS, GA (ATL area) committed to UGA this week, picking ‘Dawgs over Ohio State and FL. According to media report, he will keep recruiting open and will probably visit UGA, Ohio State, Florida, and OU. He must have an offer, but I don’t recall seeing his name here previously.

  • Dallas Johnson says:

Just my thoughts.. maybe because i am a sooner living way too close to Snyderville USA.. But there is a Ton of talent out there that the Brainiacs have been gracious pointing out to the football world.. Even more that probably goes un-noticed..and 3-4-5 star talent really doesn’t mean all that much.. IF you have the coaches to recognize that talent and the ability to coach the kids up.. Even if Houston and some schools like it gains some elite talent.. there is more than enough talent to go around.. But we have to be able to develop that talent.. It happens all over the league.. Baylor, KSU, and other schools have not had the better recruiting classes but have done a better job at coaching the kids up and getting them ready to compete.. Time for the OU Staff to Step Their game up..

  • Chas Taylor says:

I’ve interpreted Keith’s comments as being bitter. In my opinion, I think he sees where he stands on the depth chart and doesn’t want to work to move up. I hope he has a healthy career at A&M, but if we ever play them in the future I hope Keith fumbles every time he touches the ball.

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

I always hope all RBs fumble every time they touch the ball when they play OU 😉

    • ToatsMcGoats says:

It sure seems to have worked out for Brandon Williams…he had a whopping 379 yds. last season…

    • soonermusic says:

Ford is a kid who experienced a serious and debilitating injury while sitting at the top of the world, and suddenly discovered that he wasn’t treated the same once he couldn’t play at that level. He’s clearly been having major trouble dealing with that. Maybe he’s exposing some other issues with his comments, maybe not. I don’t think there’s any way to judge at this point. He should take some serious lessons from his dad about what to say or not say to the press.

  • soonerinks says:

I like the coaching hires made by Stoops last season but our problem in recruiting Texas remains that we have no coaching connections to Texas high school football. And it’s been that way for a number of years. We are currently on the outside looking in and that is never a good place to be.

    • Boomer15 says:

Coaching connections to Texas football is important, I am not denying that, however Jerry Montgomery proved that if you know how to recruit through the right channels and the right ways, OU can still go anywhere in the country and have success (See Gallimore (actually OUOT of country), DeBerry, McGinnis, Campbell and kids like Mbanasor (whom Jerry had a hugely understated influence on in regards to keeping him committed).

IMO, and I am confident in saying I am not alone with the following thoughts, OU is currently finding themselves behind the curve based on slow/poor evaluations, inability to react quickly due to red tape in regards to offering, reliance on history (which is becoming ever more distant) and a serious lack of “swag” in regards to wooing these kids.

OU isn’t cool right now, and since Jerry left it has become even more clear. The OU label/brand can get these coaches in the door in ANY state…the lack of top notch recruiting efforts (all out efforts like Saban produces at Alabama and Meyer at OSU and even guys at SMU and Houston throw out there) is debilitating recent cycles as opposed to what they could have been with more emphasis on making personal connections with the recruits and those who are assisting the recruits with their decision making process.

Jerry went coast to coast and won a bunch of recruiting battles against Top Tier teams. Seems like Jerry was almost ostracized/criticized by some staff members based on his very vocal tactics of recruiting and the praise he received from the Sooner fan base which IMO only, led to some division within the recruiting circles in Norman, which is shameful.

      • BoomerDave says:

Who on the staff ostracized/criticized Monty for his recruiting successes??

      • soonerinks says:

Well written. Montgomery saved our bacon last year and I hate to think what that class would have been without him.

Our history has always been that we recruited 3-5 Okla kids, 10-12 Tx kids (most of our highly rated recruits came from these 2 states) and then filled out the class from other states. That was the norm until about 7-8 years ago.

Our recent history with the high profile TX recruits that we have signed has not been very good. Brandon Williams, Keith Ford, Rhett Bomar, 2 RB’s that came in together ranked 1 and 2 (can’t remember their names but neither panned out), McFarland were all 5* that never worked out for whatever reason.

Losing the state of Texas as fertile recruiting grounds has been a killer. While we still get recruits from Texas we are no longer in the running for the high profile athletes. TCU, Baylor, A&M along with Texas have pushed us way down on the list. OU has been forced to go national and are now trying to make inroads into Ca, Ks and La to open up new recruiting areas to make up for the loss of the Texas pipeline. Unfortunately, I do not see any quick turnaround in reversing the recruiting trend in Texas.

        • SoonerMGB56 says:

Agree we’re not having the successes in Texas that we have had recently. But it is in no way due to any of the bogus reasons Boomer15 said.
And it’s not like we’re not having any success in Texas. Just not the sheer volume of elites that we’ve had in some other years.
We’ve gotten, arguably, the top RB from Texas in each of the last 3 years. Ford, Perine, and Anderson. Pretty sure Ford was consensus top rated in Texas, Perine should have been (if the services could really evaluate talent) and all Anderson did was run for 2,700 yds and lead his team to the 6A championship game, running for 150 or more in every playoff game.
During our best years in Texas, we would get 5 or 6 or so of the top 100 kids in Texas. Recently, it seems we’re getting two. We do need to focus on that better, but Boomer is totally clueless as to why.
Cooks did well in Texas for ND. And Gundy has done well. We just need to work the relationships, put in the effort, and it will improve.
Biggest thing will be to win some more. Smack Baylor, UT, and TCU a few times and we’ll be fine.

          • SoonerMGB56 says:

And I’m totally in the Super K camp, that as important, and maybe more important than stepping it up in Texas, is doing a better job in OK. I think we should be able to get 5, 6, 7 kids a year from OK, to build around. They may not be as highly rated, because OK is small, but I’ve got to believe that more than a couple a year are elite. They may not be as polished, due to lack of access to quality 7 on 7, because the best coaches go to TX because of higher pay, or whatever, but the HS football in OK is still good, and there are 5-10 elite, if unpolished players we can tap every year.

          • BoomerDave says:

I’m all for getting as many Oklahoma kids as possible, but only if they are OU quality. I feel like we offer almost all of the Oklahoma kids that are good enough to play at OU. Now we do not get them all, but for the most part, they get an offer. I was trying to think in the last 10-12 years who from Oklahoma has had great D-1 success somewhere else who never got an OU offer, and I couldn’t think of many. Perhaps you guys can help. Here’s what I came up with. WES WELKER, although no one else offered either until the last second and he was set to attend OU as a preferred walk-on; COLBY WHITLOCK; TYLER LOCKETT, although we wouldn’t have gotten him even if we’d offered; DAVIAN PIERSON, from Millwood, so probably would not have gotten him either. Who else?

          • SoonerMGB56 says:

Well just on the ’16 kids, I think there are 3 or 4 OL that are, as you say, “OU quality”. And there is the LB, Draper. A WR out of Union(?), a DB from Washington(?), a DT from somewhere in the OKC area. Those are just the ones I’ve heard of.
And the only OK offer I’ve heard of is the Brundage kid from OKC area.
You can’t convince me that we shouldn’t have at least 5 offers out to OK kids.
I bet we’ve got 50+/- offers out to TX kids.

          • BoomerDave says:

Again, if they are so obviously “OU quality”, don’t you think that they would have offers from SOMEBODY?? You are criticizing this staff for not offering guys that no one else if offering either. I just don’t get it. Reminds me of the McKinley Whitfield frenzy last summer.

          • SoonerMGB56 says:

Like Mama said, if they jump off a cliff, are you?
Just because other programs under recruit Oklahoma, doesn’t mean we should!
There are valid reasons for many programs, e.g. Bama, USC, Oregon, ND, FSU, etc. not to spend too much time and resources recruiting Oklahoma. A state of 3M population, doesn’t make a ton of sense them spending their limited time and money here. But that excuse doesn’t hold water for OU. This is our backyard. We should know and see all these kids. We should be better in our home state.

          • BoomerDave says:

I guess time will tell. TFB touted a bunch of Oklahoma kids last year as guys OU should have recruited and they ended up at Tulsa or worse. Let’s see how many of them become huge stars.

          • SoonerMGB56 says:

Well I trust my own eyes as well. I actually trust myself better than the services.
I’m telling you that based on the film I’ve seen, OL Filialoa, Tyler Brown, and probably Frederick will start at D1 programs. Filialoa and Brown are some serious athletes in OL bodies. Frederick seems to be the definition of country strong, and a bit nasty.
Stoner is as good as Colvin, IMO. Smooth, great hips, faster than Colvin probably. Low 48’s in the 400 (his state winning 400m time) is serious speed.
And both the NEO kids are “OU quality” Chandler would start right away. And Roberts would compete for time right away. They are both as good or better than kids in our two deep right now.

          • BoomerDave says:

Again, I’m not just talking about Alabama, FSU, tOSU, ND, etc. These kids have no offers or offers only from the likes of North Texas and the La Tech’s of the world.

          • SoonerMGB56 says:

Well if you think we offer every “OU quality” kid in Oklahoma, you know very little about football.
Still never heard any response to the fact that Stoops 2000 NC team had more than 50% Oklahomans.
You are basing too much on the stars that Scout, Rivals and 247 put out there. A), they are not that good at evaluation, and B) they don’t spend resources looking at kids from Oklahoma. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t.
Oklahoma kids that come to OU generally work harder, and have a far greater commitment level than those from elsewhere. Kids like Sam, Jason, Runnels.

          • BoomerDave says:

MGB, please read what I said about the 2000 class above. Next, if you ever bothered to read anything I’ve ever posted on here you would already know that I put less emphasis on stars or recruiting rankings than anyone. Finally, I never said that we offer every “OU quality” kid, now did I? You just made that up. What I did say was that most kids from Oklahoma with “OU quality” get an offer. Again, I asked you a very simple question 3 times now and haven’t gotten an answer yet and it relates to “all of these Oklahoma kids that you say we have overlooked in the past decade or so that had OU quality” just name them. Who has proven the OU staff wrong by succeeding at a high level? I gave you Welker, Whitlock Pierson and Lockett. Another poster added Felix Jones. I’m going back well over a decade to come up with these 5. You’ve implied that there are tons of others. I can’t recall them, so please help me.

          • SoonerMGB56 says:

That would take quite a while to compile. But I’m sure it’s more than one every third year.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

            Coach Stoops 2010: “We’re a national program…we recruit nationally.”

          • Boom says:

Just to be impartial, hindsight is 20/20. There are a lot of recruiting misses. Some kids mature later than others. I agree I would like to see more Okies but they need to be groomed which is what K has stated. I think what BoomerDave is saying is OU wants to do more evaluation on certain kids before they offer. No harm as the maturing process is huge each year in HS. I don’t consider this slow play due to the limited amount of scholly’s.
In Houston, the grooming starts in 5 grade up. There is a trainer or position coach on every field so it’s a different ball game down here.

          • SoonerMGB56 says:

You focused on just the kids that didn’t get OU offers. Over the years, there have been a bunch that we’ve offered, but offered so late as to be offensive, and as such never really had a chance.
All I know is that the best OU teams have had rosters at or close to 50% Oklahomans. That takes signing around 8 or 9 a year.
You can’t tell me the quality of football has gone down that much in the last 15 years that we can’t find 5-8 “OU quality” kids in OK each year.

          • SoonerMGB56 says:

And now we’re slow playing several OL and the Draper kid, and the Jenks CB. We could have easy 4 or 5 more offers out, NOW, to “OU quality” kids. And probably two or three would already have committed.
            Prove me wrong…..I’m waiting…..

          • Boom says:

Draper is in the 2017 class

          • SoonerMGB56 says:

My bad. We still need to offer him, NOW.

          • BoomerDave says:

MGB, Lol, I’m not disagreeing with you man, so chill! Again, you have no idea if Draper or Stoner or the 2 OL guys are OU quality, now do you? You think they are, but you don’t know. Let me ask you this. What OU quality schools have offered any of them? Even OSU hasn’t offered any of them yet you “know” for a fact that they are OU quality?? My point is that there are just a handful of guys in the state that have gone on to D-1 success that were totally overlooked by the OU staff.
As for any OU team in recent memory that had 50% of the roster from OK, prove it! I’m waiting….

          • SoonerMGB56 says:

2000 OU NC team. Look it up!

          • SoonerMGB56 says:

Here are kids that Super K, Brandon and others (whom I respect their evaluations) are D1 quality kids, and per the Brainiacs, kids OU should seriously consider:
OL TJ Filialoa, Lawton, OL Tiller Bucktrot, Stroud, OL Tyler Brown, Lexington, OL Rowdy Frederick, Broken Arrow, OL Logan Roberson, Harrah, OL Luther Harris, Heritage Hall, OL Jace Webb, LB Jimmy McKinney Oologah, CB Dillon Stoner, Jenks, WR Jordan Brown, Stillwater, Brundage the Safety from OKC, and Terry the LB from Tulsa, and the two NEO kids, Chandler (CB) and Roberts (DE).
I’m betting you that 80% of those kids will be quality D1 players. We’ve offered three of them. And as near as I can tell, we’ve only done cursory looks at most of them.
They are two to three star players in most services. And most services seriously under evaluate OK kids. Just look at Sam and Jason, both three star ratings. Both would have been four star or more if they grew up in Texas.

          • BoomerDave says:

You can respect their evaluations, but their careers are not on the line if they are wrong. I just asked a simple question. How many players from Oklahoma in the past 10-12 years that did not receive offers from OU went on to be highly successful at the D-1 level, and so far the answer seems to be, not many. You write that it doesn’t matter if no one else thinks they are D-1 quality, we should offer them anyway based on Super K and Brandon’s evaluations. Not sure that is a proven formula for success.

          • SoonerMGB56 says:

            No response?

          • BoomerDave says:

Lol! You crack me up!! I can’t find a roster with hometowns from 2000. Just a cursory glance at the players I knew where they were from and of course eliminating walk-ons, I estimated about 35-40% Oklahomans. But I will stand corrected if I am wrong. Even if you are correct, that is just 1 year out of the past 45-50. You cannot have a NC quality team with 50% of your roster from Oklahoma, IMO.

          • BoomerDave says:

Thanks for the info. There were a ton of Oklahoma kids on that team and many of them contributes. I stand corrected.

          • BoomerDave says:

I already saw this and replied below.

          • SoonerMGB56 says:

Your math is bad then. There is clearly over 50% Oklahomans on the 2000 roster.

          • BoomerDave says:

Dude, did I not just say below about 30 minutes ago that I was wrong and you were right?? My estimate was without looking at a roster with hometowns!

          • SoonerMGB56 says:

Perhaps, you can’t have 50% today, but certainly more than the 20%+/- we have today.
And history says you’re wrong. All 7 of our NC teams’ rosters had more than 50% Oklahomans, including Bob’s 200 team.
I still suggest that 30-35% would help. Just talking about 25-30 kids on the roster, on average. That’s like 6 or 7 a year. I think the work ethic, leadership and commitment level would be better.
The greatest lacking attribute of recent teams, IMO, is commitment, work ethic and leadership. I think upping the % of Oklahomans would help that greatly. Most of these Cali kids have little to no commitment to the University of Oklahoma. The Texas kids are not a whole lot better. You just wouldn’t see many Keith Ford’s from Oklahoma.
It makes me sick, to have a kid like Ford, whom the staff invested so much in, quit when it gets tough and bad mouth and negative recruit on the way out. It just highlights so much what I think is missing in the team today.

          • BoomerDave says:

Don’t disagree with much of what you just said, however I do know that Oklahoma kids flame out just like kids from other states do. I do feel like there is enough talent in Oklahoma, North Texas, Western Arkansas, Kansas and Louisiana to field an awesome team each year and it would confine our recruiting area and allow our coaches to build better relationships with the HS coaches in that smaller, more confined area.

          • BoomerDave says:

Don’t necessarily disagree with you, but if you are talking about the teams in the early’70’s, that was before scholarship limits were in place. Switzer has said several times that if he had been collared with 85 ship limits such stars as Shoate, Steve Davis, and the Selmon’s would never have received an offer.

          • SoonerMGB56 says:

The 2000 team was over 50% Oklahomans. Look at the roster.

          • Boom says:

Flix Jones from Tulsa who tore it up at Arkansas and was drafted by the Cowboys? Don’t think we offered him. However, the pros didn’t work out so well either.

      • DCinAZ says:

Agreed. I thought Jerry was making the other coaches look bad and Bob’s barbs that he threw out after Jerry left about them “recruiting as a group” and people “trying to be recruiting superstars” kinda showed a pettiness from the staff IMO. Seemed to me like Jerry was outworking everybody else on staff and burning the midnight oil while they were all at home sipping vodka on the back porch.

    • Sooner 76 says:

My friend, you are misinformed. BJW, for one, had tons of connections in Texas.

  • John Garner says:

  • Jared William Reininger says:

I know a ton of people are upset with Ford, and I sure would not say I am happy about the situation, BUT having met Keith on numerous occasions and knowing that he was always extremely respectful (comes from military family) even to me, I am surprised by all that has been said. I won’t comment on what I have heard/believe was the reason for his suspension but I think he took quite a psychological blow. He went from the most promising freshman to a 3rd or 4th stringer. He had a case of the fumbles. And then to top it off he gets hurt. I think he was mowed over with pressure and expectations and people need to keep that in mind. Not defending everything he said but he is what…20…21 I think. He is still pretty young and I think the is at the bitter stage of his issues, which almost everyone goes through at some point, but when he is past that I think that he will apologize and be able to look back and realize what has been done for him. I am sure I am going to get hammered for what seems like apologizing for him or defending him but I just wanted to put a slightly different perspective on things.

    • Rene Goupillaud says:

With all due respect, those are excuses for immaturity. There have been plenty of college football players whose careers took a bad turn and they didn’t blame others. I was a Keith Ford fan. I hope he does well at A& M. But acting poorly doesn’t suggest it will all work out.

      • Jared William Reininger says:

I am not saying it was an immature or correct move on his part. I am saying that I believe there to be other things than those just directly related to football which are causing his outlash. I think it is wrong and I think he is being immature…but then again, he is only 20. I don’t know how things will work out for him and I wish him the best, I just think some people are being WAY too critical of him. Sure be critical because as I said, I don’t agree with what he said, but also take into consideration that he is not perfect and still very young and with time I think he is going to realize his mistake.

  • Jared William Reininger says:

Also Happy Memorial Day to everyone out there…

    • EasTex says:

      Thanks JWR.
Not only do many think it is national cookout day, they also lump in honoring our troops and vets.
Not on this day and as a vet it aggravates me to no end. This one day is to honor those members of our military who gave their lives, thus Memorial Day.

      • Wilson says:

Don’t forget that it is also consider a major shopping day….but not for this vet… I usually go visit a nearby memorial…and reflect…but to each their own…

Most, if not all, of OU’s 2015 signees who are not already on campus are expected to report the first week of June (same time as pretty much every year).

This isn’t really news, but I’ve seen some on Twitter trying to suggest it as such. So I just wanted to briefly address it here for anyone who wasn’t already aware.

  • Cole says:

Which signees will report next Sunday? I seen Sunderland and Dahu. Any one else?

  • pag says:

Especially at the RB position i think OU should always aim at the top guy in the nation, i mean all you need to know is that Coach Gundy has recruited and coached Adrian and Demarco … and now we’re nervous if we’re going to land Trayveon Williams. Not saying he’s going to be bad but come on…

  • rphokc says:

re ford……..he sits out a yr at tam……….does he not think that they have every intention of recruiting over him

  • Sooner 4Ever says:

    63rd!!! WOOOOoooo

  • Daryl says:

I have not been one to complain about recruiting with OU staff but man this stuff just continues to be it good and it is frustrating. I have no idea what the issue is with us not getting kids but the staff needs to find the common denominator and fix it. It’s not wins and losses because if that is the case then Ole Miss and a&m have had plenty of recruiting success without lots of wins and championships and same for Houston. It certainly isn’t a lack of tradition and it is not facilities either. Whatever sales pitch we are giving needs to be revamped and figured out.

While I agree that Ford needs to keep his mouth shut at the same time if he is pissed and wants to hurt OU then slamming coaches in reports that other HS kids will read is a pretty good shot. It doesn’t help OU at all.

    • Brent says:

Nice generalization there by throwing every kid from every state under every educational, athletic, and family background into one basket and asking why not OU.

  • Exiled In Ohio says:

A friendly request: can we just get off of Ford’s case? He’s a good kid who has hit a rough patch in life. Can we just root for him to be successful at TAMU and ignore remarks that I’m sure he will regret in the future?

    • thebigdroot says:

Well its kind of like when someone talks about your family, it’s just not cool. You can say it amongst friends but once it goes public, somebody is going to shut you up.

      • Exiled In Ohio says:

So, he talked bad about our family, and that gives us the right to talk bad about him? If someone attacks us publicly, responding publicly just lowers us to their level. Yeah, I know that sounds cliche, but I still believe it.

I definitely get where you’re coming from; just giving my humble opinion.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

      “He’s a good kid…..”

How do you know? I’m not saying he isn’t, but probably nobody on this board knows enough about him to actually make that comment as a definitive statement.

      • Exiled In Ohio says:

Just giving the benefit of the doubt. Most on this board thought highly of him before this; I don’t think our opinion needs to change radically based on his actions at a low point of his life. I would appreciate that kind of slack from others when I’m going through a rough time.

        • ToatsMcGoats says:

I’m sure he’s not the first to leave OU with hard feelings towards the program, but this is the first that I can remember where the player bashes the school every chance he gets. When he stops doing that, I’ll forget all about him.

    • Bob Edwards says:

The problem here is that when he makes a public comment he invites a public response. Part of a young man’s education is that he learns that his words have consequences. I certainly would not vilify the young man, but it is completely appropriate to point out that he was treated right on the way out and that his comments seem like sour grapes.

      • Exiled In Ohio says:

What’s up, Bob! But what is gained by pointing out that Ford messed up? Everyone on TFB knows he messed up; what good does it do to keep piling on like so many of the posts below continue to do? I would hardly say that put-downs on this site are contributing to his education. I view the comments below as us venting our frustration at his expense.

A good rule of thumb is: “don’t say someone’s name unless you have something good to say about them.” I wish I were better at following that.

        • Bob Edwards says:

Well it is not my purpose to defend everything that is said about Keith Ford. However, this is not simply a case of him saying/doing something stupid. He made public statements about individuals and institutions that most on this forum are associated with in some way. In some cases these statements appear to be factually inaccurate based on what some know about these individuals/institutions. The discussion of that should not be, in and of itself, out of bounds.

Are there boundaries to that? Sure. Have they been overstepped here? Perhaps. However, Mr Ford is not a child and if he is going to say negative things about others in public it is not inappropriate for others to hold him accountable in public for those words.

          • KJ1123 says:

Agree, he is not a child and to me age is not an excuse in this case. He and everyone else on the team has had instructions about dealing with the media. Ford wanted those comments in the media plain and simple. Just be thankful to get a chance somewhere else and move on, nothing else should be said.

    • John Garner says:

Understand exactly what you’re saying but he he hit a rough patch because of his mistakes and failures, not the programs’. I simply cannot imagine Bob allowing any athlete to go without help, tutoring, or any support that is needed and legal.

This is why the BIGXII sucks… The 2015 season hasn’t even started and we already know all of those teams are lame. Yeah TCU isn’t bad but it’s TCU. A small private christian school who wears purple.. Boring. I have faith that TCU could beat most of the 14 teams in the SEC, but you can’t tell me a home and home series with Bama, Auburn, or LSU isn’t drastically more intriguing than any other conference game than Texas. Like it or not the SEC is on top for a reason, football crazy schools in football crazy states. I mean, we are talking about football right?

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

        On top of what?

        • Defend Colfax says:

          Google ” College Football”

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

If you are talking about putting players in the NFL, okay.

          • Defend Colfax says:

Don’t kid yourself. College football isn’t even primetime on the west coast. Oregon can’t travel to a National Championship, no one else in the Pac-12 is either. Except USC. The B1G has a passion for football, but the conference as a whole does not match the SEC.
I’m not trying to pimp the southeastern conference, I’m just being honest. I mean how many teams in the BigXII even sell out their games? OU, Tex, WVU? The mountaineers staidum is like 50-60,000 max.
Not everything positive said about the SEC is an attack on OU.

Doesn’t bother me one iota if OU is forced to go back to recruiting more in-state kids and continue focusing more on Cali, FL, LA, GA, AR, MD, etc. I will become more optimistic about the possibility of a National Championship in the near future if that happens.

  • Stephen says:

Not sure how Houston pulls in a big-time recruit and we can’t even make a top-10 list. This happens nearly every summer and I understand that we don’t like to pressure recruits and we always make a strong finish, but at some point you have to get a feeling this strategy isn’t working.

    • John Garner says:

Maybe it’s close to home. Any numbers of reasons why kids don’t choose OU. No sweat. We’ll get kids. Good kids. Hopefully good character kids. But Boulware coaching RBs might be a mistake. If Devwah lands Norman though, I’ll eat crow.

      • Stephen says:

True, I’m not trying to sound the alarms, but this whole I guess attitude of taking the summer off or not needing to get commits in the summer just seems kind of ignorant in my opinion but that’s just how OU summers are.

        • John Garner says:

I think that, in most cases, they may be waiting to see who develops and maybe get a second look at others. I don’t understand their method entirely, but neither do I doubt them.

  • SamSooner says:

OU has two choices: go after the top notch players that have a plethora of offers and lose out or OU can go after the not-so topnotch players who don’t have offers.

Option 1: recruits drags it out and doesn’t choose OU leaving OU scrambling to fill a class.

Option 2: Class is already full as of May but the recruits aren’t talented enough.

I have no way to support this but I believe OU is the beneficiary of negative recruiting. If it’s not the negative recruiting, it’s probably the bagmen getting the job done. And, this is something we should be proud of, the OU coaches refuse to swim in that infested pool. They are by the book win, lose, or draw.

Bob made it clear and I paraphrase but I believe he said we are going to win and we’re going to it the right way.

I would rather that OU lose honestly than win dishonestly.

    Psalm 37:35,36

Amen! Great passage. I think OU has always had to deal with negative recruiting, but I think every other team does, too. When an athlete has numerous offers and they chose not to go to OU, they are chosing not to go to some other great schools, too. I’ll never forget some truisms from Gary Gibbs and Bob Stoops his first year here recruiting. Gibbs: “Recruiting is not an exact science.” Stoops: “There are a lot of good players out there.”

Also, OU gets some of those guys everybody wants sometimes.

I am computer illiterate so can’t post it here so maybe someone else could post it (saw it on Landthieves). Anyway, it was a nice thing to hear about a very nice guy that we are very lucky to have as our men’s basketball coach. Live about 20 miles from Lon’s hometown of Silver Lake so he is a legend around these parts.

This is a real supportive community for all Sooner sports. It’s refreshing to see fans rally around all of our athletic programs.

  • Zack says:

I’m not going to over react to Houston having some success. For one lets see if those kids stay committed. If so, it’s going to be a few years before that team has some real success so you would have to wonder if the coaches would even stay.
On the other hand I think Houston would have been a better addition to the big 12 than tcu but obviously tcu was and has been a good solid program. I’m just speaking from the fact that the big 12 lost a big area of influence in Houston when tamu went to the sec. And realignment was supposed to be about reaching media markets and making big time money off the tv contracts.

And as far as how this affects OU this year? I don’t think it does. We already found our qb and 2 of his future weapons.

    • rphokc says:

yeah, after tam went sec, I read some remarks attributed to coaches and observers in the houston area that the coverage and interest in the sec eclipsed what was left of the big 12-2……lsu benefited also……..

    • EasTex says:

To me the only thing their commitments change is how higher rated DT offers now have fewer players taking slots at higher rated programs. It makes the compo for the big boys like Mike Williams even tougher.

  • Stephen says:

Finally got to read some of Keith Ford’s comments and have to say that while unproven, they’re probably going to hurt OU when recruiting. I know it’s way too early but the whole Boulware thing should be something to keep an eye out for.

    • EasTex says:

I don’t know if it will or will not hurt recruiting, I would think many would also consider the source and most people don’t care for the wine made from sour grapes.
I haven’t seen his comments and don’t need to. If he said anything other than thanks to OU and Coach Stoops for his two years and unconditional release, it was saying too much.
The expression “parting shot” comes from ancient times when the Parthenians would attack the Roman columns with archers in chariots and would turn and flee causing the Romans to drop their shields, and the “Parthenian Shot” was fired by the fleeing archers.
To this day few know of or have heard of the “Parthenians.”

    • EasTex says:

      Great strike out pitch.
The bama gals weren’t going for her rise ball so she and the catcher made a great adjustment.

    • SamSooner says:

Did you read her lips? She said, “I’ve got it. I’m okay.” Confidence in a tough situation.

      • Austin says:

The idea is that every TD is 7 points. Most of the time the coaches will be happy with that result and the only kick to follow is the kick-off.

However, if the team that scored wishes to go for two they can. Two things can happen, if the point after try fails the TD is worth 6 points; if successful the TD is worth 8.
I like this idea, for several reasons. Extra point kicks are seldom blocked or missed so you speed the game up by not only wasting time with a kick, but the resulting time outs after the extra point kick and the following kick-off.

    • Boom says:

Not much of a fan for this in college. From what I understand, the NFL is 6 pts for a TD and the extra point was moved 15 yards back for a 33 yard FG for 1 pt. 2 pt is what you described. I’m old school and don’t want to see this changed. Lot of teams especially in college have lost games due to missing the extra pt. ie OU for one. But it opens the door for debate which means I could be swayed.

      • EasTex says:

Since I don’t care one teensy bit what the nfl does, I only viewed this proposal for the NCAA.
Sure a blocked/missed extra point occurs, but not very often. I’m old school when it comes to the rules too, but the rules have changed many times in my life time. This one to me is one I could go for whole heartedly, if for no other reason the game would speed up and there wouldn’t be so many irritating commercials during the time outs after the extra point kick and the kick off.

        • Boom says:

I get it. However, I don’t think this would speed up the game. ESPN would only add more commercials to make the game the same length. The money wins out.

          • EasTex says:

If they extended the time outs for commercial breaks even those who don’t already dislike espn would be outraged. They would just have to charge more for the ad time that they do have, the money aspect would not be effected.

          • Boom says:

I wish other networks could broadcast the games on ESPN so you could choose which station you wanted to hear while watching OU.

          • EasTex says:

I wish someone could/would compete more aggressively against espn’s monopoly.
There was a comment during the Sugar Bowl that still grates on my today. After OU went ahead by 7 after Saunders long TD reception the announcer said few thought bama would “give” OU 24 points.
            /grrrrr

          • soonermusic says:

After OU won the softball game by a score of 5 to 2, the commentator’s summation was “OU holds on to win…” I realize the bases were loaded and the theoretical winning run was at the plate, but it was a scoreless inning and I don’t think a 3 run victory is “holding on” to win. JMHO….

          • blaster1371 says:

I remember when ESPN got started and people thought they could not compete with the Big 3 networks. Remember all the odd sports they televised? And then…they got a big hit with Sportscenter. Sports junkies quit watching the 5 minute sports update that came with the evening news. Now ESPN is the sports monolith and the Big 3 networks are playing catch up, while ABC has gotten in bed with the devil (ESPN).

          • soonermusic says:

I think you may be dreaming if you think a rule change will have any significant or even noticeable impact on commercial time during games. From the network side, the games are simply a vehicle to present commercials. The dvr is your friend.

          • EasTex says:

            Indeed it is.

        • blaster1371 says:

It is an intriguing idea. Sounds like it would diminish the impact of regular FGs (3-points) when you consider it would take three of them to surpass aTD +extra points (8-points) score. Also takes away the 2- point conversion we have now. It would be interesting to hear from kickers how being moved to the 15 is different from kicking from the 2.

As an aside—-I had to cringe when you said kickers don’t miss those short FGs or extra point kicks. Hunnicut’s snake-bit game against K-State just began a replaying loop in my mind.

          • Daddy R says:

A nfl kicker the other day said moving to the 15 wont matter much, that he thinks nfl kickers are so good, they’ll still hit 90% from there. The same kicker suggested just moving the goal posts in, shortening the width of the gap… (Cant remember which kicker it was) Seems like it would work though, especially at making the kicker a more specialized position once again, instead of a dime a dozen.

          • EasTex says:

Never said they don’t miss a PAT, just not very often.
As for the two point try, it wouldn’t take it away and it would count the same, the big change would be if you don’t make it the 7 point TD becomes 6.

Let’s go girls! Game 2 and the Series awaits. You got this!

Thanks to all the vets living and passed:

Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Forces:

You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you. In company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-arms on other Fronts you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world.

Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped and battle-hardened. He will fight savagely.

But this is the year 1944. Much has happened since the Nazi triumphs of 1940-41. The United Nations have inflicted upon the Germans great defeats, in open battle, man-to-man. Our air offensive has seriously reduced their strength in the air and their capacity to wage war on the ground. Our Home Fronts have given us an overwhelming superiority in weapons and munitions of war, and placed at our disposal great reserves of trained fighting men. The tide has turned. The free men of the world are marching together to victory.

I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty, and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full victory.

Good Luck! And let us all beseech the blessing of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking.

Game 3 might be a good time to finally take the bats off their shoulders.

    • EasTex says:

And quit tweaking the batting order.

      • BleedCrimson says:

I am ok with any of the girls being in the lineup. Every single one of those girls has abilities, and you never know who is going to get hot at any moment. Callie was on for both of these games. I am guessing Coach saw something in batting practice, it just didnt get realized on the field.

        • EasTex says:

I understood why she was sending all lefties to bat, I just think too much tinkering with the starting lineup hurts continuity.

Thank you for honoring only the fallen on this occasion.
I always think of my wonderful child hood friend on this day.

      • OohRah Mama says:

Honor and condolences for Patrick. Too many Gold Star families for our hearts to easily bear.

One of my earliest memories, haven’t thought of this in years…getting dressed in Sunday best, white gloves, ruffly dress & socks. Driving to the cemetery and seeing men in uniform, old and young together standing board straight and saluting headstones. Everybody with so many little paper poppies; my Uncle Erby handing me a fistful of dollar bills, to buy our own from old faces, stretching spotted, shaky hands that shook my own tiny hand and kissed me on the cheek, whispering “Thank you child”. Church services with a big American flag out front, my Nana and my aunts & uncles talking about about relatives I’d only hear about but never get to meet.

Yes, this day is for the ones we no longer are blessed to have among us. I’m thankful every day my sons came home to us and I’ll embarrass the hell out of them every Veteran’s Day by thanking them and every vet I chance to see on Veteran’s Day. But this day? A somber, grateful and sorrowful Day of Remembrance – MEMORIAL Day.

        • EasTex says:

          You were raised right.
My Dad, his friends, my friends Dad’s, my Sunday school teacher and countless teachers were all WWII vets. We were raised with the same level of respect for those who could not be with us, but would always be remembered.

  • rphokc says:

indy 500……way back when a kid, there was some buzz nationally when this race was upcoming and now it’s buried in all the competing sports …….large crowd but no sell out….I attended several formula 1 races at indy but missed the 500, so far…….great place for racing

    • EasTex says:

Same here, it was big deal in sports for a very long time.
So much has changed and not just more televised sports. I think the rules changes have had a lot to do with it. I noticed that the cars are powered by Chevy’s or Honda. I don’t think Ford even tries anymore, not to mention the many engine builders from the past like McLaren.

      • rphokc says:

you’re correct about the rule changes…..I don’t know how they formed the field way back but I know they allowed more variation in types of cars/engines, eg the first time a car had a turbo, aj foyt I think,, and from where the drivers came from……….now it’s just a stop on the indy racing circuit which is basically a spec series, although they will let in a nascar driver at times…………etx, if you’re watching the race, the driver who caused the turn 2 wreck, sato, has a reputation for doing stupid things on a track as he did many times in f1

        • EasTex says:

Ol’ A.J. What a great career he had. You should have seen the parade in downtown Houston after he won the Indy, huge crowd and lots of ticker-tape.
That wasn’t a turbo that Granatelli introduced, it was a turbine.
I remember all kinds of innovative cars in the past and for the longest time the innovations were for speed and winning, not for safety. Then safety became the biggest concern, and now it is about fuel economy and emissions.
The only F1 race I will watch anymore is at Circuit of the Americas. The Euro tracks are so narrow passing is almost impossible, which means the F1 races are won in qualifying.
I didn’t turn the TV on until lap 2, so I only caught the after blather about the wreck.

    • Dustin says:

      Positive change, IMO

  • Slim Sooner says:

Dreary old day in western OK. No Sooner softball, baseball, basketball…nothing. HATE the off season almost more than Texsa. How long till football season? Well, that’s too long. Need some sunshine and a BOOM!!

  • rphokc says:

indy 500– nice win for montoya after starting at the back and pulling it out…….he catapulted from his only other 500 win into a decent career in f1 and nascar and now back for his second win

    • OohRah Mama says:

I’d choose watching someone watching someone watching someone watch paint dry than watch car racing. But that’s just me.

      • rphokc says:

man and machine testing the limits, sorry you find it boring………however, you’re a hockey fan so you’re ok

        • John Garner says:

Agree if it’s Formula One! But NASCAR and Indy — just high-speed left turns.

          • EasTex says:

The F1 tracks in Europe are terrible, passing is almost unheard of.
Oval racing used to be fine with me, but the day Dale Earnhardt died is when I quit watching NASCAR.

        • EasTex says:

That’s what I have always loved about racing. It is so different now, it isn’t as edgy and exciting as it once was.
Of all the forms of racing today, MotoGP and drag racing are now my favorites.

          • rphokc says:

I’m all for the driver safety improvments that have been developed over the yrs. I remember listening to david hobbs relate how, not too many yrs ago, racing was essentially a driver strapped onto a fuel tank going as fast as possible with some deadly consequences at times.

          • EasTex says:

There was a great documentary about driver safety and the 24 Hours of Le man a few years ago.
The safety improvements are important, yet I still miss the old days and the pioneers of racing. Mortal men with nerves of steel carbon fiber.

        • OohRah Mama says:

And football, basketball, soccer, Cards baseball, horse racing. And shooting – targets, not hunting. But Gawd save me from having to endure NASCAR.

For me the ultimate torture would be strapped down, eyes clamped open and forced to watch golf.

          • Boom says:

C’mon Eas Tex, looking at nature can’t be that bad. If you know the game, it will teach you a lot about yourself, how to act, and how to treat others. I had a hot temper when I was young which helped in some sports, not golf. Once I got in control of myself (took years) I became a good golfer. It has made me more successful as a husband/father & in my career. Just my take.

          • EasTex says:

I love nature, that’s why I hunt, fish and shoot often. Shooters smile and laugh far more than golfers.

          • Boom says:

Oh, I seem to smile and laugh just as much. I fish and smile the same as playing golf. We have a short time so I try to go through life with a smile no matter what i’m doin. : )

          • EasTex says:

            Me too!
Nothing freezes my face into a beaming smile like a belt-fed weapon.
