Open Post | Weekend, Jul. 2nd – Jul. 5th (UPDATE Fri., 1:53 pm)

An early Happy Fourth to all of you! God bless you all, and God bless America!

Parker Boudreaux: As we warned you about last week, stud 2016 offensive lineman Parker Boudreaux committed to Notre Dame earlier this afternoon. And while the news will definitely be met with a certain amount of disappointment, there remains no doubt the OU offensive line is in good hands with Bill Bedenbaugh. We’ll reassess things now that Boudreaux is off the board, but you now may see the Sooners extend an offer to OK Preps product Rowdy Frederick. But again, we’ll work some sources to try and get a sense where OU will turn from here following today’s news. – (Super K)

Tre Jackson: Earlier this week I had a chance to catch up with 2016 cornerback Tre Jackson (5’10” 178 – Baton Rouge, LA), who originally intended to visit Norman last month. However, he was not able to actually make that trip. Although he did visit and camp at the University of South Carolina, where picked up an offer from the Gamecocks.

Jackson’s father actually played wide receiver for Steve Spurrier when he was at Florida, so there is an obvious connection there. In speaking with Jackson, he did tell TFB that he still intends on visiting OU and hopes to do so this month, following the dead period. He did say, though, that South Carolina will be tough to beat. But there is little doubt if Jackson does indeed make it Norman, the OU staff will have a great opportunity to make a strong impression.

As a side note, I did ask Jackson if his father played for the Gators during that same time Bob Stoops was in Gainesville, but Jackson said he did not believe that was the case. – (Super K)

Gary Overshown: Yesterday Oklahoma offered 2016 defensive end Gary Overshown (6’5″ 215 – Mesquite, TX), who is also a recent TCU commit. But shortly prior to his commitment, Overshown had actually camped with OU during their Dallas area satellite camp.

It’s also worth mentioning, for those who may not have already been aware, Overshown is teammates with recent OU commit and 2017 QB, Chris Robison. Alex tells me that Robison and Overshown actually visited OU together earlier this summer. We haven’t had a chance to catch up with Overshown just yet, but Alex should be in touch with him shortly to find out where things stand following this OU offer. – (Super K)

– Team Notes | Sterling Shepard Showing Leadership: I was talking to a friend recently who told me something that happened a week or two ago. As most of you know, OU and other teams do player led 7-on-7 each week during the offseason. Apparently one of the freshman at OU was having a rough day, dropping a lot of passes. I was told that Sterling Shepard and a couple other upper classmen went up to the freshman after practice and insisted that he stay after to catch some extra balls. But they didn’t just tell him to stay after and then go on about their way. They stayed after with him to get some extra work in.

Those are teammates. Those are the kind of guys you want around and within your program. – (Super K)

Team Notes | Joe Mixon: You’ll probably recall that a rumor recently surfaced that Joe Mixon had suffered some type of an injury. You may also recall that I checked with my sources on the matter and, last weekend, reported Mixon had in fact suffered a high ankle sprain (here in the 6:16 pm update towards the bottom). Yesterday, Scout.com’s Bob Przybylo confirmed our report via SoonerSportsRadio.com.

I have since been told that Mixon had not yet returned participating in 7-on-7 workouts this past week. He is, however, walking around fine and the expectation is this won’t be something that lingers on too long.

I will also say that prior to this occurrence, I had been told Mixon and Dede Westbrook were essentially taking turns scoring touchdowns in 7-on-7. – (Super K)

– UPDATE (Fri., 1:53 pm): Couple of tough back-to-back days for OU on the recruiting trail. Yesterday is was missing out on Parker Boudreaux (even though we tried to prepare you for that one), and today it’s the commitment of 2016 DT Mike Williams to Stanford.

https://twitter.com/DevinWilliams_1/status/617042285453144064

Williams was easily one of the top 2016 defensive line targets on OU’s board. Congrats to the young man on his commitment.

love to hear stories about leaders stepping up and leading by example instead of just words

    • Fear The Magic says:

Me too but then the negative me starts thinking, Ok which freshman WR do we have that cant catch the ball.

      • Kuzi says:

My guess is Humphrey because he did struggle some in the spring, but I don’t know for sure. I am excited to see what he can do… guy has some wheels.

        • Fear The Magic says:

Humphrey was my initial thought as well. You probably saw the same posting that I did about how many drops all of the WRs had in the spring and I believe that he had the most.

  • KJ1123 says:

    oooooo 2nd, Im getting closer!!

  • Sam Philbeck says:

Great stuff about Sterling. Can’t wait to see him in this offense this year and can’t wait to watch him thrive so it will shut ol’ Stephen Dale up since he called for Sterling to be benched for Quick. I really like Quick and still think he’ll be a big playmaker, but nothing like Sterling.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

Awesome news about Sterling. Not just a great player but a great teammate. Hope he keeps roots in Oklahoma. He seems to be a great person.

  • Brandon says:

how would you compare manuel johnson juaqin Iglesias and Jermaine Gresham to sterling shepard dede westbrook and mark Andrews on talent not production obviously some of these guys are unproven?

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

Sterling > Manny and Juaquin the rest I can’t say without seeing them on the field

  • Brandon says:

what about DeMarco murray chris brown, mosis madu compared to samaje perine joe mixon and either Rodney Anderson or alex ross or even brooks in the third spot

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

Demarco is the schools all time TD leader, Samaje might be on his way to the OU career rushing record(he’s almost half way there)

  • Jason Vos says:

Even though Parker Boudreaux committed to ND. Its worth mentioning that JUCO Quinn Mittenmeier is enrolled at OU.

He has 3 years of eligibility left, so he is a sophmore. Like I said b4 would love to get Boudreaux, but Mittenmeier kinda makes up for that.

Now its next man up whether its Fredrick or the TCU commit Brown, who has said publicly that he is an OU fan. Whatever the case, Bedenbaugh will get players that fit hi system in here

    • Zack says:

I think bedenbaugh just needs to stay local this recruiting class. 5 or 6 really good OL in the state maybe more than that.

      • Jason Vos says:

He doesn’t need to stay just local, but he does need to offer the local kids, so if the others don’t pan out at least he can still fall back on those Oklahoma kids.

        • KJ1123 says:

I agree, shouldn’t just stay local, if a top kid anywhere has at all any interest and shows it by spending time and money to visit, etc, then you have to pursue. I think OU knows that there’s a good chance of landing a high percentage of local kids, so they have to be mindful of the numbers, which is totally understandable.

        • Zack says:

I’m not saying he has to stay local but I think this year he should. It would give him in theory an easier recruiting road. Then he can start early on 2017.

          • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

            What?

          • Zack says:

I’m saying the talent here is underrated and the okpreps OL talent this year is really good and with big kids 6’4 to 6’6 330+. I think bedenbaugh could lock up some instate kids early and then move on to 2017

      • Brandon says:

speaking of staying local I looked up the other day the number of all americans and all conference players under stoops on the school website. 39 out of the 102 all conference players were from Oklahoma to 36 from texas and 19 out of the 34 all americans were Oklahoma kids compared to 9 texas kids some of both of those numbers were repeat award winners but I thought those numbers were interesting.

        • BoomerDave says:

This just tells me that Stoops and staff have done a very good job of selecting which Oklahoma kids to offer and which to not offer. There haven’t been too many that went without an OU offer that then excelled elsewhere. Some, yes. Many, no.

          • Charles Anderson says:

YOU ARE DELUSIONAL. LOTS OF OKLAHOMA KIDS DO WELL ELSEWHERE THAT ARE NEVER OFFERED BY ARROGANT BOB. BOB’S OU TEAMS HAVE A HISTORY OF BEING QUITTERS IN BIG GAMES AFTER THEY GET BEHIND– A HUGE EMBARASSMENT THAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN ALLIEVIATED BY MORE OKLAHOMA KIDS ON THE ROSTER.

          • WilliamJack says:

Delusional? How many is “lots”? Sounds like many more than several.
How about some names and stats? Any Heisman winners? All Americans? Just curious if I’ve missed something so large over the years. Please enlighten us.

          • boomersooner says:

Congrats on your 1st post. Hopefully it’s your last

    • Super K says:

Yeah, I never worry about Bedenbaugh or the OL. However he gets there I have faith the OL is going to be consistently good.

      • Brandon says:

if we took the top 8 to 12 kids from Oklahoma for the next two to three years what type of talent would we be getting compared nationally? and if we did this and won with that talent would these kids in Oklahoma get ranked higher than they do now coming out of high school

        • Super K says:

In the coming years it’s going to be pretty darn good. I’m actually going to in a roundabout way answer parts of hit question in a post I wrote called “Why Hard Work Matters” that we’ll publish next week.

          • Brandon says:

sounds good ill be looking forward to reading the post next week.

          • Kuzi says:

So much happens between signing day and the end of a college football career. Some kids peak early, others peak late. Some are willing to put in the hours to improve, while others aren’t. There are also things like coaching and fitting a system. That is why I don’t get too overly concerned with “this guy is a 4 star, but our guy is a 3 star” talk because it is all just guess work. If a guy comes from a small school or small state without the exposure, they get downgraded. If they don’t make the summer camps, they may also get downgraded. There are plenty of talented kids out there and only a handful are truly exceptional, transcendent talents (like AD for instance).

I am not saying that everyone is equal talent-wise. There are some guys who are obviously more physically gifted than others. Some of that gap can be made up by hard work, some of it cannot. Raw talent doesn’t always win football games though… there is much more to the game than that.

This Oklahoma team has the potential to be very, very good if they put it all together. They need a QB to step up, they need the DBs to step up, and they need to develop a cohesive, strong offensive line. These are no small tasks by any means. All I hear is how OU football recruiting has fallen off. Maybe we aren’t pulling some of the kids we used to for whatever reason or another, but we are still getting some big-time athletes. The talent gap between Oklahoma and the other big boys is not as large as some would have you to believe, and I think this team can compete on the national level. We will see.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

I think one indication that we can compete with other so-called top programs in recruiting is the fact that OU average star ranking was top 7 in the country. This year is not finished yet, so we cannot logically evaluate it.

          • SamSooner says:

I like the way you think, Kuzi.

          • Brandon says:

It looks like quarter back recruiting has really done well how come we haven’t seen an increase in top wide receiver’s wanting to join Lincoln Riley’s offense? is it more of a wait and see approach with them?

          • SemperfiSooner says:

I think it is a wait and see for the receivers. Having a new position coach might have them hesitating, but once the season starts I think recruits will take notice.

  • Jason Vos says:

We need to get Tyler Brown away from TCU. Hopefully the connection of OU with Horn will allow for Overshown to look our way as well

  • John Garner says:

Parker to ND is no surprise and nothing to fret over. Coach B will find good ones and coach them up.

  • Brandon says:

who was the last 5 star rated kid to come out of high school? I remember Gerald McCoy but has there been any since then?

    • j l says:

      Metoyer

    • Zack says:

      Mixon

    • Zack says:

Clay and ford were 5 stars on at least one site

    • Booooom says:

The closest I can think of was Austin Box. He was a 4 star rated player but ranked 46 in the nation

    • Booooom says:

Gabe Lynn and Ronnel Lewis were 4 stars in 2009, Austin Haywood and Bronson Irwin were 4 stars in 2010, Dylan Dismuke and Kendal Thompson were 4 stars in 2011, Sterling Shepard and Alex Ross were 4 stars in 2012, DJ Ward and Stanvon Taylor were 4 stars in 2013, Justice Hansen and Steven Parker were 4 stars in 2014

    • Sooner 76 says:

In 2009, Gabe Lynn was ranked by Scout as a 5 star #1 CB, but was ranked 4 star #8 by Rivals.

In 2009, Ronnell Lewis was ranked by Scout as 5 star #2 SLBer, but 4 Star #4 OLBer by Rivals.

The last 5 star by Rivals from Oklahoma to sign with OU was Gerald McCoy #1 DT in 2006.

    • JD says:

Gresh should have been a 5 star…he was unstoppable until a kid took his knee out in the playoffs or else they would have gone undefeated

  • Kuzi says:

It is a long time until signing day. OU needs to take care of business on the field this fall, and if they do, the recruits will come.

The way the schedule is, the final month of the season has the potential to be huge for the Big XII. This could equal some good press for the conference for a change.

    • rphokc says:

yeah, reminded that no one has seen the semi-new regime play a down…make some meaningful noise this yr and players will take notice

  • EasTex says:

Love to hear that about Shep.
I do wonder, though, don’t they still use the tennis ball machine like Broyles and Stills used to after practice?

    • John Garner says:

As I recall, the tennis ball drill was introduced by young Spurrier back when Bob first came on board.

      • OohRah Mama says:

Welp, then Bobby should resurrect that.

      • EasTex says:

Okay, but irrespective of when it was introduced is it still being used now? I look at the “hands” OU WRs have had over the years and have noticed a precipitous increase in the number of drops over the past couple of years. Something has changed, either in the quality of the WRs or their training.

        • John Garner says:

Agree, something has changed. Drops on the rise. Especially last season. I was inserting a little history only to remind us of how Spurrier took some DBs and turned them into pass catching wonders. I often think that what made Heupel looks so good during the NC season wasn’t so much his throwing ability but the WR’s great hands and concentration.

  • Jake says:

Other OU news sites & the official OU Football Twitter account would not take the time to “bash” or “refute” TFB’s reporting if they weren’t a legitimate, go-to website for OU Football news.

    While
it’s definitely annoying to see some hate spewed you guys’ way, it’s
ultimately a sign of respect for the quality work that you all provide.

And to that, I say- Keep up the good work!

  • Matt says:

Rewatching the 2012 Baylor game this morning (I lived in Wyoming that year so I had only seen highlights before now). It amazes me the number of man coverage players we had on that team. I realize the run defense was shredded but the fact that they could line up and just play man coverage across the field against a group of receivers like BU with no pass rush? That’s insane considering what we watched last year.

  • Mike Reed says:

I wanted Chris Daniels, and Bledsoe. If those commit somewhere else I will be upset, I still think we only get or need 2 DL in this class and I am sure Reynolds will get 2 maybe not 1st choices but we will be fine.

Another DL swing & miss… At least we got a great haul in the last class cuz this one is not looking good…

Does that mean you have a case of fatigue fatigue?

According to a few on this board our “depth” at DT scared Michael Williams away I think that depth has a combined 1 start between them there are plenty of schools that have have proven depth and still bring in top talent at that position year after year.

    Happy 4th everyone.

    • Zack says:

We did have a huge class last season but the year before wasn’t very strong. I know sone guys think orso will be a solid player but he and Garnett haven’t really made the practice reports that I’ve seen. I know Garnett is likely out this season with an injury

      • Boom says:

Wade started for the most part of a year while Phillips was out. Not saying Wade is the answer but Romar & Walker look to be good prospects and Gallimore could be an option later during the year.
