Open Post | Weekend, Sept. 5th – 7th (UPDATE Fri., 4:50 pm)

On the recruiting front there haven’t been many new 2015 names. OU coaches are obviously occupied with the 2014 season, as are recruits with their respective seasons underway as well. Right now the class targets are pretty much set and a lot of what things are about is just waiting for the recruits to get on campus and then hopefully making a decision.

Jamal Danley: We don’t need to tell you that next weekend is going to be a big recruiting opportunity, but while many folks may want OU to pick up a ton of commitments that isn’t necessarily going to happen. This is simply because many of them have other visits scheduled. One player we are going to watch very closely is Jamal Danley. He has told us that he expects to make a decision very soon after his visit to Norman. Most of you know he actually almost pulled the trigger on a commitment a few weeks back but decided against. Right now, it’s all about this trip. If he likes what he sees then he could very well end up a Sooner and in chatting with him, we got the impression it could happen quickly.

Marvell Tell: Greg Biggins of Scout.com reported earlier this week that star safety Marvell Tell has said he will take an official visit to Oklahoma. While we haven’t spoken to Tell, our guess is this is a positive only in that it’s another indication that OU is becoming that brand again where kids see it as a high profile visit.

Joseph Wicker: A player you’re going to want to keep your eyes on is 2015 defensive lineman, Joseph Wicker (Long Beach, CA). Wicker recently told Adam Gorney of Rivals.com that he will visit Oklahoma at some point. Wicker doesn’t currently have an OU offer. However, we have spoken to a source and told that he will have an offer as soon as he takes his ACT. The hold up isn’t about any academic issues that Wicker has, just that when it’s this late in the process OU likes to have an ACT. Additionally, a player can’t take an official without an ACT score (or a practice ACT score).

Before anyone freaks out, this potential forthcoming offer has nothing to do with where OU stands with Neville Gallimore or Gabriel Campbell. Gallimore and Campbell are both serious about OU. That doesn’t mean they’ll end up in Norman necessarily, but OU is certainly one of their primary targets.

Mark Andrews and the Outside WR Threat: Recently we were asked whether Mark Andrews is still with the wide receivers, or if he has been moved to tight end. As most of you recall, many thought Andrews would grow into a tight end during his recruitment. But he was adamant about wanting to play wide receiver in college. However, we have been told that Andrews is now indeed with the tight ends group.

Back in fall camp you’ll recall we told you that OU had been working on trying to develop Jeffrey Mead as a potential outside threat, because they had hoped to have a big outside target in Dorial Green-Beckham (HERE). Mead looked relatively comfortable for a true freshman last Saturday night, but he also showed that he is still a freshman (rounding his routes, etc.). And as most of you saw, Jordan Smallwood struggled catching the ball. So as we mentioned earlier this week, Dallis Todd may be up next. But it’ll also be interesting to see if Andrews gets a chance on the outside if they can’t find someone with size who is ready to be that big threat.

We will say in asking about Andrews we’ve been told that while he is a big guy (230 lbs+), he carries the weight VERY well. He does not look remotely like one of the big, lumbering TEs that might come to mind. He has a very long frame and doesn’t look his listed weight because of how well he’s put together.

General Recruiting Note: We know that a lot of fans want to see commit after commit. And after the Sugar Bowl a lot of people expected OU to take a meteoric rise to the top of the recruiting world. But we wanted to point out that while it may not appear totally obvious, when you really think about it OU’s recruiting really has taken a big step forward. In recent years we’d see a ton of offers going out this fall. And inevitably some scrambling, if you will, towards the end of the recruiting cycle. Recruiting is about filling needs with scheme appropriate athletes. When we look at the position groups we can see that, unlike recent years, there is a lot of clarity in terms of targets and what OU could very well end up with. Consider:

Offensive Line – This position is almost done. If Danley commits, and we already know Barnett should end up a Sooner, then the position group will be full.

Defensive Line – OU is only looking to take one NG in each class and they’ve got that in Marquise Overton (who is actually now starting to recruit 2015 DE Darrion Daniels, by the way). And OU already has two long athletic defensive ends in a class where they would actually be fine only taking two. At this point it’s just about getting that cherry on top, and Coach Montgomery has OU in serious contention for four major DE targets including Gallimore, Campbell, Daniels and Wicker.

Secondary – OU currently has an elite CB prospect committed. And while that doesn’t seem like much, Will Sunderland will also be a Sooner. OU leads for Kahlil Haughton (he confirmed he’s set to make the trip to Norman next weekend). And OU is sitting in a very good spot with Justin Reid as well. Don’t expect to see many, if any, DB offers go out because OU knows they are in very good position with all of these prospects. And if a decision was made today, they’d likely get all the guys we just listed.

Wide Receiver – OU is essentially done at this position. The only receiver that OU will still take at this point, as we understand it, is Ryan Newsome. And, interestingly, OU is in Newsome’s Top 4.

Running Back – OU is believed to be done at this position.

The two positions where things are still a ways from being resolved are at the TE and the Linebacker spots. To be honest, there isn’t really any spin we can put on the LB recruiting at the moment. Hopefully, OU can land some of the targets they’ve got right now in guys like Amante Caban, Cassius Peat, Khaylan Thomas, etc. Recruiting is a lot about leverage. You need a commit or two to create that sense of urgency in other recruits.

Consider a player like Dru Samia, who was all but wrapped up to UCLA, and then takes a visit out to OU. He could have easily said, ‘I’ll make my decision after my official to OU’ (which he won’t take until Bedlam) so that his family can see the school. But instead he committed almost immediately. Simply put, OU needs to create some momentum right now when it comes to their LB recruiting.

– UPDATE (Fri., 12:30 pm): OU has rescheduled their previously announced non-conference home-and-home match-up with LSU for 2027-28. If you’ll recall, OU postponed the LSU series back in late 2013 when they announced a home-and-home agreement with UCLA. Feel free to make all the necessary jokes about how it’s a ridiculously long time from now.

– UPDATE (Fri., 4:50 pm): Doesn’t sound like GameDay will be coming to Norman for those of you who might have been expecting and/or planning on it.

Appreciate the work you guys are doing! BOOM.

  • Jed says:

Give us your thinking on OU’s strategy for QB recruitment over the next three years or so.

    • Zack says:

Take a walk on this year, plus give mayfield a scholarship. Then try to get guarantano or Patterson for 2016. Who knows about 2017, but 2018 the name we will see is Casey Thompson.

      • cpearc00 says:

        What about Buechele?

        • Zack says:

I think he’s 3rd on our list and may end up 4th depending on Torre from Santa Fe, heard some positive news about him from here I believe just don’t know what day that was.

        • Boom says:

I stay away from the QB position as there is way to many tangibles to judge. Leave that one to Huep. There are a lot of arms out there but how many make good decisions. Who can feel the pocket, who can stay in the pocket, how to move within the pocket, so many varibles. To me, that is the hardest eval to do.

    • BigJoeBrown says:

I was thinking that same thing. Trevor Knight is a dual threat, but Cody Thomas was recruited as a pro-style, Justice Hanson duel threat, and the 15′ Gibson is a dual, with 16′ Jarrett Guarantano as a pro.

      • Zack says:

I agree but Thomas and guarantano are mobile pro style guys so they would still have a read option style.

    • Brian says:

2015 – Gibson or bust. Invite Caleb Wilson (Serra QB/Coach Wilson’s son) to walk-on
2016 – Guarantano, Beuchele, or Patterson. We’ll get one of the 3
2017 – Who knows who the elite kids are…they’ll emerge this year

  • Have you guys heard any news on practice this week? Has Mead been playing more or has Todd gotten some time with the ones? Thanks.

    • Super K says:

Basically coaches told Todd that he needs to be ready in case they decide to burn his redshirt. It’s all going to depend on how Mead and Smallwood develop over the next game or two. Almost makes me wonder why OU doesn’t take another look at Dahu Green. He’s already bigger than Mead and is an incredible athlete with great hands.

      • Brian says:

Could we flip Dahu easily? Even closer to signing day?

      • Somebody REALLY needs to step it up. I wish that Mead would have gotten more reps with the ones during the summer. Hopefully ole boy can step his game up. I would LOVE to have a legit deep threat on the outside with a tall WR. Think Dwayne Jarrett from USC back in the day.

        • NickDangerThirdEye says:

Nice thought, but Jarrett was 6’5″ and 205 lbs. as a freshman. Mead has a LOT of time at the training table and Smitty’s workouts to get where Jarrett was.

          • Coach K says:

Jeff is 6’6 without shoes and 184. He will be 205 by his Junior year I think. His body isn’t ready to add that weight yet. He was on high calorie diets in high school and never got any bigger.

He is so long right now he will probably take a little longer to add weight. He will look a lot like Tennell his whole career.

      • Zack says:

I’ve been saying dahu’s name forever it seems. Why not? I mean cavil may be a bust. They moved Andrews to TE. That’s 2 spots open. And dahu looks special I want to see him this year to see if teams can figure a way to nullify him and see if he can overcome that.

        • OUknowitscomin says:

Seems to me Cavil is a bust already. Not giving up, but getting passed right up by so many including true FR, writing is going on wall pretty quickly.

      • SoonerfanTU says:

Surprised Smallwood didn’t look better. They raved about him last year (all year, or during bowl practices), and we heard good things in the spring/fall. Didn’t expect him to falter so much.

      • Coach K says:

When you say bigger do you mean thicker? He isn’t taller and isn’t as long either.

Jeff needs to get stronger but his best days are ahead of him.

Dahu is a big man, and will be a good player.
Jeff has the bigger catch radius and is a little quicker in my opinion. Also an accomplished 3 sport athlete that could have been 4 in HS with track.

  • EasTex says:

    Whitfield, please!

    • Justin says:

      +1000

    • Does he have an offer yet?

      • Super K says:

        no sir

      • Fort Smith Okie says:

He was told to expect an Arkie offer when he camped there, but came away without one and they’re almost bleeding at LB and S. Word was he simply didn’t look the same against better caliber athletes as he looked in game film against lesser competition.

        • Zack says:

I think it’s been awhile since his brother posted here but last I saw from him, the family seemed disappointed that he’s not getting the major offers he wants from ou, osu and arky. Even if we think he’s a talented linebacker as opposed to safety(where I think he would be better) then why not offer, from what I can tell we are not full at linebacker and no one seems close to pulling the trigger.

          • Super Keith says:

“Even if we think he’s a talented linebacker as opposed to safety(where I think he would be better) then why not offer…”

3 or 4 years ago, we may have done that. Things are just different now, and offers are only going out to guys that the staff knows can play. We are sitting right at 84 scholarships right now, and that would be 85 if Mixon wasn’t suspended.

I like Whitfield, but the numbers have to work out. We need LB’s more than anything, and other positions will be thin too, if we don’t make the numbers.

OU’s recruiting is just on a different level now. We’ve never had to worry about getting kids interested, but now we can afford to be more selective.

If Whitfield is as good as we think, the offer will come. If it doesn’t, there’s a reason.

    • Bryan says:

Whitfield is a decent athlete, but his main issue is that he’s a ‘tweener. I’m not sure he has the athleticism or speed for the safety spot and seems to be too small for an OLB. Just my thoughts.

      • EasTex says:

He’s 6’4″ 195 lbs. going into his Sr season. I don’t see size, speed or position as a problem, especially with that extra “it” he seems to have.
Coaches said they wanted to see him play a few games this year before making a decision, hope the young man is putting on a show. Whoever gets his services will be getting a good one.

        • Boom says:

I will take a decent athlete that can play WR, QB, S, CB or anywhere they need him. Based on comments from Trainers who have worked with him at CB, they feel he could play there in college. He will easily be 210lb next year if not more. He’s got fire in his belly due to being overlooked. Trust me, if he played at Jenks from his freshman year, everyone would be wanting him.

          • Soonerbred says:

Reminds me of the Jordan Evans situation. Talented but too small for LB, coaches didn’t know where to put him but offered way late. Guess that worked out.

        • Zack says:

I don’t see what the issue is from ou offering. Have they not been watching cam chancellor in Seattle. If you get this kid in a weight program in February and let him redshirt he could come into his RS freshman season at 6’4 220 and not lose a beat athletically but only get better. I would just hate for this kid to end up at a program that doesn’t develop players the way ou does or even osu for that matter.

          • Super Keith says:

There’s a reason he doesn’t have an offer. I have no idea what that reason is, but I trust our coaches to offer the right guys. Mike Stoops has shown time and again that he knows what talent looks like, and if he’s still holding out, then you have to believe there’s a good reason.

          • Zack says:

            That’s a fair point. I like you’re reasoning

        • Mark Wayne says:

Spiro beat Stillwell 47-40. I wasn’t there but someone posted on Stillwells Facebook page he had a 90 plus yard td run in the first half.

      • Jason Vos says:

In that case he’d be perfect at NB

  • Zack says:

What corners right now are they in great position with for 2015? Haven’t heard much about corners in awhile. Also I like these safeties this year a lot with Reid, haughton, Sunderland (silent commit) and tell all very interest. It’s too bad we won’t land them all.

    • Super K says:

I think with Jordan Thomas, Marcus Green and Tito all showing that they can play outside CB, they aren’t going to be in a hurry to offer CBs. They’ve already got PJ and they’re still pursuing Lane. I still believe they should offer Derrick Baity.

      • Boom says:

        Ross?

        • Super K says:

Ah yes, my bad. Ykili Ross as well! Good catch!

        • Zack says:

Forgot about him. That’s a good one but last I heard USC looks good to get him.

        • Ed Cotter says:

I am going to try to get out tonight to watch Ross play against Colony High if I can get rid of this flu, but he is USC’s to lose unfortunately. Will report back what I see.

          • Boom says:

Ed, based on your last email I had hope he was still interested in OU since his dad said he would make an offical visit. Get well and if there is any news, it’s appreciated.

          • Ed Cotter says:

Thanks, Boom. Saw Ykili a few weeks ago and he said he was coming for the Tennessee game. He has a game Friday night (9/13), but was going to try to get out last that night or early Saturday. Getting him on campus for a visit may work wonders, especially when he sees the atmosphere of game day. Also, USC has picked up some good DB commits, so they may be looking at him as a WR. Some services have him as a DB, some as a WR and others as an ATH. Getting him to Norman is the first step though.

          • Ed Cotter says:

USC actually picked up WRs and only one DB commitment, so it looks like DB is where they are looking at him. Yeah, it would take the grace of God to keep him away from USC. Sooner Magic? Hopefully.

  • Brian says:

Sunderland, Haughton, and Reid/Whitfield will be our safety class. We actually need 3 guys in this class with the lack of depth we have there.

I think you always take 2 corners in a class with how multiple we need to be.

  • Tyler says:

Do we have any shot at Malik Jefferson? Also, are we done recruiting Soso Jamabo?

    • Super K says:

OU led at one time with Soso. In fact he was going to commit. A particular incident made that go off the rails. So yes it’s done. Jefferson is tough to read but based on my conversations with him I’ve always felt he’s TAMU or Texas bound. But his mother vocalized to the OU coaches how big of an impression OU made. We haven’t pulled in a high profile LB in a while though so I’m going to remain reserved in my optimism until I see that change. Many of the big time OLBs were in on are a result of coach Montgomery’s work.

      • Tyler says:

Not to discount Rodney’s talent, but I think Soso is going to be legit. Good thing we’ve got a lot of talent in that position though. Hope our defense continues to play well in hopes of standing out more to Jefferson. Thanks for the reply

        • Zack says:

Soso is going to be good no doubt but how good remains to be seen. Anderson has been timed faster and while it may not look like it, he does play against the toughest competition in the country for high schools. I’m not sure if soso plays in the same class as Anderson. Cedar hill is the number one ranked high school team and Anderson did some really nice things against them last year in the state title game.

          • EasTex says:

Anderson has obviously benefited from excellent coaching. Not only is he a talented RB, he is smart and patient, lets his O-line do their job and create space then he blasts through. Not many young RBs can read their blocks as well and have the patience to wait for the opening.
Soso may be more elusive, but I don’t think he has the football smarts that Anderson does.

          • cpearc00 says:

Will be interesting to see if Anderson can make a name for himself with this 4-headed monster in front of him next year.

          • EasTex says:

He had to wait his turn behind Adam Taylor and still drew attention as a soph with Taylor getting all the attention. I think he will be patient, maybe even RS his freshman year.

          • Tyler says:

I see him getting redshirted as well. Assuming Mixon is back next year, it will be hard to find playing time as a true freshman with all the elite RBs. Back to evaluating Anderson, I agree with you that he shows awareness with reading blocks and timing. I just feel Soso has greater upside even though he might no have the smarts like Anderson. Anderson reminds me of Brennan Clay when I watch his highlights.

          • Zack says:

He does look a lot like clay on film. But if he really is in the 4.45 range he’s faster than clay at 4.64, could make a huge difference.

          • Zack says:

The running back behind him seems pretty good too.

      • lovethemsooners says:

In your opinion, is what’s going on with Frank Shannon going to negatively impact Jefferson’s thoughts on OU?

      • thebigdroot says:

Incident? Can you expand on this or is it something to be kept hush?

      • SavageSoonerEsq says:

Is the “particular incident” that made it go off the rails for Soso publicly known or is it a secret?

      • Bill Duncan says:

If Montgomery is recruiting most of these LB’s, what exactly is Kish doing as a recruiter?

  • Krys Allen says:

Any idea what led them to change Andrews over to TE? It seems like we already have plenty, and in recent history its a position we don’t really utilize. I could see how this could be pretty frustrating for Andrews, especially with the lack of proven talent at wideout. I wonder if he was just that much behind all the others in camp, and they told him TE was his only shot at playing time?

    • Jordan Esco says:

If I were an OU coach, my sales pitch would have been pretty simple…

      Jimmy. Graham. Gettin’. Paid.

      • ToatsMcGoats says:

Yeah, Jimmy Graham’s gettin’ paid, but it looks like Stoops just broke a recruiting promise. That doesn’t look too good…

        • Oscar says:

The coaches do not make a position change without first talking it over with, and getting the approval of the player, although, it can be tough on the player to not want to go against the coaches desires.

          • ToatsMcGoats says:

I can’t remember who posted this yesterday, or whenever it was, but they made the comment that he (Andrews) wasn’t too happy about it.

          • rphdenton says:

just seems somewhat suspicious ………he’s been thru one fall practice and it’s already determined that he move to te, flex te, whatever…..he’ll spend the yr on scout watching for any evidence of te usage in the passing game (we all will)…….if he’s po’d, some rumblings will probably surface

          • ToatsMcGoats says:

I agree. I just hope he doesn’t transfer….especially if he is at TE now. If Bell is playing his first season ever at TE and he’s the starter, we must be somewhat thin, talent wise at the position. Just my opinion.

          • Sooner Ray says:

We are thin there as far as “elite” talent is concerned. If you make it a flex type position we don’t look so bad.

        • Jordan Esco says:

          I can’t disagree.

        • soonermusic says:

Is the recruiting promise a promise to play the kid at a certain position, or is it a promise to give him a shot at that position along with everyone else?

I know some coaches will say anything to get a kid to sign, but I have trouble imagining Stoops telling someone he’s definitely gonna play at one position no matter what, and not leave any options open.

          • ToatsMcGoats says:

When OilSooner broke this on TFB a couple of days back I went looking for an article that confirmed what I had heard, and there were several. This one from MaxPreps is the one I linked to (4th paragraph down says it):

            http://www.maxpreps.com/blogs/maxwire-national-blog/OqBaNkJLvkGYujCr-77VzA/arizonas-no-1-football-recruit-mark-andrews-chooses-oklahoma.htm

          • soonermusic says:

Thanks for the link, Toats. I see what you’re referring to, but I think there’s probably room for interpretation of the choice of words by the time it gets to “the reporter said that the kid said that Bob said” stage. I’m sure Andrews said what he wanted and didn’t want, and I’m sure Stoops told him what his plans were for him with the team. I may be way off base, so when the headline next week is “Stoops promised I’d never have to associate with TE’s,” i’ll feel kinda foolish. But I’m doubting that they can afford to be in the business of promising playing time at a certain position to a guy who hasn’t even been to a practice yet.

          • ToatsMcGoats says:

I see where you’re coming from. This is just pure speculation on my part, obviously, but the way I came to the conclusion is pretty obvious as well. I just remember that sticking out as far as the reason why he committed to OU in the first place, and this article, as well as others confirmed that. At least in my own weird head…

          • soonermusic says:

I hear ya. It will be interesting to see how disgruntled he remains about the change, and for how long, esp if it means playing time. Also, it will be interesting to see if it’s temporary or not. Yet another reason to “stay tuned…”

          • Stats says:

Look how it worked out for Geneo Grissom. Left position to contribute at TE while his position was stacked, came back later and became a starter. “Cross-training” may be a blessing in disguise for Andrews.

          • ToatsMcGoats says:

Good point. You would think that he would want to get on the field ASAP, and with the rep our coaches have for giving players a shot at multiple positions, I would think that this was nothing but a good thing…

        • SCSooner87 says:

Unless he successfully convinced Andrews to make the switch and he wasn’t “forced” to do it.

      • Doobie74OU says:

Like x’s 1,000,000 I can’t believe this kid is so adamant about staying at WR. It should all be about chance to play and projecting to the NFL. With his size speed and athleticism he has a way better chance to be a Top 5 TE than he does being a Top 20 WR. #5 TE is Kyle Rudolph at $7.3 million and #20 WR is DeSean Jackson at $6 million. I would play the odds if I was him!

  • Ryan says:

Who is the linebacker from Virginia we are recruiting? What are our chances of getting him? It sounded like he was really interested if I remember

  • SoonerGray says:

Hmmmm, I realize we’re short on commits but I think we’re sitting ok at LB? We just made up some major ground with the #1 guy Malik Jefferson. We sit pretty with Anthony Wheeler. Ricky DeBerry has been teasing us for over a year and I wouldn’t be surprised if he committed after his official. Casius Peet and Bo Wallace have both said how much the dig OU. I’d say we have an outside shot at John Houston, too.

I guess the only thing I’m concerned about is which one of those guys can play in the middle? Seems like we have plenty of guys to try and fill Striker’s shoes, but who’s the next Curtis Lofton? Jorden Evans and Alexander are young but we have no depth inside and it doesn’t seem like we’ve recruited guys to play in there?

    • Boom says:

I still like Griffin from Florida too.

    • Super K says:

Definately plenty of targets on the board but the difference between having one commit and zero is significant so I’ll feel better when we land one.

      • SoonerGray says:

You know, I def get that. Very good point. Sorta scurry when you’re this far into the year and you haven’t landed a commit. I think that is more related to the level of recruit we’re going after at the position, then the level of recruiting our coaches are producing. I think if we’re going to go after the national guys, we’ve got to be prepared for some more excitement deep into the year and potentially at these all-star games after the high school season is over. Comes with the territory. I’ll take it too! It sucks not having anything to look forward to at those games. Mixon was super exciting last year. I’d like to have 3 or 4 of those this year!

    Question for the Brainiacs…
Does anyone know if Sam Bradford is interested in coaching? I know he’s not done playing, and I absolutely wish him the best in his recovery and hope he gets a chance to resume a very promising career. I’m just curious if we might ever see him back on the Sooner sidelines with a headset on…

    • Eric Hoffpauir says:

      He’s plenty smart, too.

    • Drew says:

I would love it if Sam came back to coach for us.

    • ComancheJoe says:

I was actually thinking about Bradford coaching too when I first heard of his injury. Except I was thinking he should take his guaranteed money and run! QB development at OU seems to have suffered since Huepel’s responsibilities increased with the coordinator role. It would be awesome to bring Sam in as QB coach (graduate assistant?). Along those same lines, replace Kish with The Boz and watch the quality LB recruits come pouring in!

      • paganpink says:

The Boz huh? Now that would be something ComancheJoe! I like the way you think. Is he still doing any acting? Obviously some of the TFB have contact with him. Maybe they should put a bug in his ear!

  • Chandler Welch says:

Campbell committed to FSU, justa heads up.

  • soonerinks says:

Super K, so what is the deal with LB recruiting? Is Kish just not a good recruiter or is he just not a fit for the geographical area? I know he was the LB coach at Arizona and probably has West Coast connections so hopefully we can land some Cali backers. He did land Bolton last year so he has that going for him. I have no doubt that he can coach them up, but he really seems to struggle on getting in on the top Texas talent. Since this is such a big need and the opportunity is there to play on a NC caliber team, it just seems that we should be at the top of the list for some major recruits at this position.

  • rphdenton says:

re lsu………that’s ridiculous………would rather play lsu and get rid of neb
……what does tfb know about this joseph wicker……don’t recall ever seeing him mentioned though he has some good offers

    • Zack says:

Seems weak to me hopefully lsu requested this. I can only imagine the sec fans thinking ou is running away.

      • rphdenton says:

come to think of it, it probably won’t be bstoops vs ‘the mad hatter’

        • Zack says:

That’s probably true if miles is still coaching it will be at michigan I’m sure. Stoops seems like he’s open right now to sticking around longer than most expected. A lot of people thought 50-55 was the age he would retire. Recent comments he’s made make me think he’s got 10 years left in him. I would say he’s done after 2020 though.

  • BigJoeBrown says:

TFB, I got a question. During last night’s “Polo Bowl” against Casady and Heritage Hall. I saw that Casady only ran for 51 yards on 24 attempts. I know it is a team effort and you can’t do everything yourself, but that number seems really low in regards to having a Josh Wariboko at the helm. I just don’t see any of our other o-line recruits having a team run for only 51 yards. What is your take?

Let me end by saying, I trust Stoops, Bedenbaugh and all of our coach’s I know they are way more qualified than I am in regards to assessing talent. I just ask as a insignificant fan.

    • Zack says:

For one thing I think heritage hall is generally a much better team. Second it’s the first game let’s see what happens the rest of the year. Plus he may not have very good teammates on the line or at running back.

  • TheFuerte says:

    On Kenneth Mann:
Watched him play last night. He was easy to spot, as he was the tallest and most physically imposing dude on the field. He clogged two gaps pretty well, but he seemed to stall after making initial contact after the snap. I’m guessing this is because of the way he is coached to read the backfield because he was obviously much stronger and faster than the guys blocking him. He appeared to get into his defender, peak into the backfield, then make a move. He could have had many sacks and tackles for loss had he just jumped in the backfield right off the bat.
The run game up the middle was stuffed all night. Three fumbles were forced in his area, and though I couldn’t tell if he stripped the ball, he caused the turnover for sure. His 5A team lost to a 6A team, but that had less to do with him, and more to do with the defensive secondary on his team.

  • HoustonChiver says:

Do you think they may plan to use Mark Andrews the same way we used Gresham? A tall, big bodied endzone threat could be appealing to a guy who wanted to play outside WR. Still has potential to be a scoring threat and get good stats

    • Boom says:

More like Jace Amaro from TT who was used in their slot with 3 other WR. Total mismatch for S’s & LB’s.

  • Pokerman says:

Disappointed in the LSU reschedule. I was really looking forward to that. Heck, I’m nearly 70 and will have to pull some strings to be around in 2027. Maybe we’ll catch them in the playoffs some year.

  • bjwalker82 says:

I will be 45 when OU plays LSU.

  • Stats says:

    OU Bulletin Board Material:
I just saw an ESPiN video by Adam Rittenberg on the Top 3 Defenses from Week #1:
    – UCLA for Takeaways (3 defensive TDs in a 12 minute span) vs. Virginia
    – Tennessee for Tackling (only 5 missed tackles) vs. Utah State
    and….
    – Texas for Teamwork (apparently they really swarmed to the ball and lots of players were credited with “assisted tackles”) vs. North Texas.

    • Daddy R says:

Pretty telling when they compliment Texass not for awesomeness, but for Teamwork, ha! When did tejas become a kindergarten?

And let’s see only 5 missed tackles from Tenn against the beasts that are Perine and Ford. I could see that happen on 1 play!

    • paganpink says:

Teamwork, huh? And everyone gets a trophy because winning isn’t the only thing when you’re really, really, like, trying hard! LOL! They may be getting more Charlie Strong down there then they counted on!

Is that from yesterday. Saw somewhere last week was rough that his teams starting qb went out early with injury.

    • Super Keith says:

Like watching a video game. That second play is ridiculous, he basically out-maneuvered/out-ran the entire defense.

  • L Davis says:

    • Cory Reedy says:

Good listen. Thanks for the link L Davis!

    • ToatsMcGoats says:

There seems to be a connection between the guys that speak very highly of OU. That connection is the fact that they have taken the time to look at the team and the level of talent and experience that OU has this season. Most of those who would nay say on OU seem to have no clue about the depth that this team has. It’s still only about TK9 to them.

  • satxsooner says:

Was the lack of discussion on QB recruiting an oversight? I would think that is a position that’s a long way from being resolved.

    • Daddy R says:

Well, barring injury or massive struggles, appears Knight is entrenched as QB. Cody Thomas looks solid and promising, same with Hansen who is redshirting I think.. And we have Baker Mayfield next year too.. All 4 are soph or younger.

Seems like a group that could last 3-4 years. I’d bet we look at recruiting 1 QB max each of the next 2 years..

      • satxsooner says:

we generally take 1 a year, and my question is about 2015 recruiting.

        • Daddy R says:

As far as I’ve read, the position seems resolved for now, and we have 4 guys the coaches like. The QB who committed to Ohio St. (Gibson I think) was and is an interest for 2015, but it appears the coaches are OK with not taking a QB next year also.

        • boomersooner says:

i agree with some of the folks below. mayfield is gonna be on scholarship next yr, so in essence that’s 1. and then, gibson, i think his name is, would be another, if we get him. other than that, skip it and get 1 next yr

        • Zack says:

Gibson is the target just because of how special he could be and even if he didn’t pan out at qb he would still be a great wr in most scouts minds. To me the 2015 qb is not expected to eventually be the starter. It appears they think the 2016 guy will be the next starter as a RS freshman the year after knight leaves if he stays through his final year of eligibility.

    • Jordan Esco says:

It appears to be Gibson or nothing in this 2015 class, so I’m just not sure how much there is to discuss. At least until after Gibson visits next weekend and we can get some sort of sense as to whether OU made up ground and has a legit shot.

  • PLAW0720 says:

Okay brainiacs – time to put your sources to work and scoop Boren’s big announcement planned for next Friday afternoon.

  • JJsooner1 says:

In a best case scenario, what MLB comes to OU?

    • Zack says:

I think best case scenario is to get multiple guys who want to play the jack and then figure it out later. It may seem like they want guys with different skill sets but to me mike stoops wants all 4 linebackers to be over sized safeties. This year it just so happens they have a legit nfl sized linebacker in Grissom.
Caban and wheeler would probably be the top 2 ILB. And jefferson, KLS and deberry olb.

  • JJsooner1 says:

Oh my, listening to the Animal……….a caller says Mayfield is better than TK and will start when he becomes eligible. Geezzzz

  • EasTex says:

If they had game day at OU it would be the only time I would ever watch that schtoopid show.
Having it at OU would be an admission that OU actually does exist and I don’t think that is the type of message espn wants mentioned. They can’t get over the bu^*-hurt from the Sugar so pretending OU doesn’t exist is their method for coping.

    • JJsooner1 says:

      Yup!

    • Zack says:

Seems like someone at espn created a “great” idea to show an fcs matchup for college gameday that week. I know they are/were considering Norman because they have a “potential” order from my company for that event if it takes place. I hope this roussel guy knows jack squat but I wouldn’t be surprised if ou doesn’t get it.

      • Daddy R says:

was reading somewhere about a South Alabama vs Mississippi State game that is in Mobile. South Alabama is a feel good story, in SEC country, playing an SEC team. Seems right up ESECPN’s alley…and fits with the quote. But, eh..

      • EasTex says:

Don’t count on it, unless OU and BU are the only undefeated teams in the country when they come to town.

      • paganpink says:

I really thought they were almost certainly coming here. Too bad- for their ratings- if they don’t. They just seem determined to ignore us. I like Kirk Herbstreit,he tries to be more fair in his analysis then a lot of them. Corso is hilarious as a negative indicator. Didn’t the fans even cheer one time when he was here and picked against us since you can make bank on doing the opposite of his picks?

        • EasTex says:

I watched game day a few times in its early years so I don’t know how accurate his picks are.
The only reason I know how he picked OU against Taco Tech in 08 is due to soonerscott.

    • Fear The Magic says:

How obvious can you get. ESPN focusing attention on OU beating an SEC team? not happening.

  • Drew says:

B/R has OU winning this weekend 45-35 . . . lol, why am I even reading this?

  • Daryl says:

I am predicting Purdue vs. Notre Dame. A in-state rivalry of 2 schools that should be undefeated match up. Or Texas UCLA but doesn’t seem shocker enough?

    • Zack says:

Neither of those are off the map IMO. I think this is their lets show the small schools play for absolutely no reason. No offense to division 2 teams but the reason people get excited about college football is not to see teams no one even knows exist.

      • boomersooner says:

Amen brother. Didn’t they go to ND St or some tired place last yr? They’re like the guy who wants to point out all the charity work he does. I’d rather listen to finebaum talk for 17 straight hrs than watch game day from Yazoo City, Ms. or some damn place and hear about the school record 22 catches some guy had 1 yr

    • j l says:

B/R predicted Miss state vs south alabama lol. Knowing ESPN, it wouldnt surprise me.

  • Sooner Ray says:

For future reference, someone might want to keep an eye on Levi Draper from Collinsville. 6″2″ 210 lb inside linebacker/ wide receiver just starting his sophomore year after starting for the varsity as a freshman. Already rated very high in the state physically and academically. Hell of an athlete and his dad is a huge man so he will likely grow into a monster. Says he spends a lot of time working on his speed and strength and studying technique. I don’t know if he’s a Sooner fan but may be able to find out.

  • leatherneck1061 says:

Is there a list somewhere that shows the big OOC matchups we have upcoming over the next several years??

    • boomersooner says:

I think sooner sports has future schedules somewhere

    • Hotrod33 says:

You can go to soonerstats.com and they have future opponents. Go to football and it will give you a drop down list and click on future seasons and it will show you who we got coming up. Very good site for that.

  • Zack says:

Is anyone getting a chance to check out whitfield tonight? Or at least knows someone who will have video highlights

  • Sooner Ray says:

Just got around to watching the FSU/oSu game replay. How could anyone vote FSU the best team in the country? I don’t think they could win that lack luster conference called the Big XII.

    • Stats says:

I browsed an OSU board this week to see how they were feeling about their performance against FSU, and they had several Noles fans stating that OSU can play with anybody and should win the BigXII since they played the Noles so close. I guess that would make sense if the Noles actually played well…

      • Sooner Ray says:

Hears the way I saw the game, oSu played fast just as they always do but they had practiced for this game since last season ended and they won’t have the chance to practice that much for one team the rest of the year. Fsu had the same opportunity and for some reason, either took oSu lightly or just aren’t as good as advertised, they just didn’t appear to be hitting on all cylinders. Bottom line, I say FSU is over rated (except in their conference) and oSu will struggle once they only have 4 or 5 days to prepare for a game. Just my drunk opinion.

        • Zack says:

I agree, no beers tonight saving myself for the morning drinking tomorrow so you’re not wrong. IMO osu didn’t even play as good as they could have. They were down 17-0 at one point and weren’t doing much. My friend was whining early on saying we need osu to look good and I just kept saying back that I’m not getting worked up over the pokes if they suck to hell with them. I don’t get excited about moral victories so to me osu fans shouldn’t be excited about anything at all.

  • Sooner Ray says:

If texsa does much more cutting, they will be able to host the worlds largest calf fry.

  • Gary Robbins says:

Will OU get a real tight end commit for 2015? How many passes will be thrown to an OU t/e in 2014? Seems like OU hasn’t even got a serious whiff from a t/e commitment for 2015.

    • Sooner Ray says:

I may be totally wrong here Gary but I’m not sure OU is interested in a pure TE right now. They seem to like these flex types such as Millard/Rip/Flowers/Bell for example that could line up anywhere depending on play call and force defenses to stay on the field without subbing.

      • Gary Robbins says:

Probably right, would that explain their reasoning to move Mark Andrews from wr to tight end.
Only reason I was wondering is I seen a headline where Austin Cantrell from Roland helped them to roll over Muldrow. Another Oklahoma boy going out of state and I believe he had an OU offer.

        • Sooner Ray says:

The news about Andrews is what got me thinking the way I am. It makes sense if he is as talented as an athlete as we think, the coaches may have convinced him that he could be a lethal weapon appearing as a TE but being able to slide out or even moving into the diamond to get touches from many different angles.

          • Gary Robbins says:

Sure wish OU’s linebacker problems were that easily solved. Like Super K (I believe ) said we just need 1 good lb to commit to get the ball rolling. I’m up here in Kirksville, Mo. Taped the OU game will watch it Monday when we get back. Took OU on my parlay as one of my 4 teams. Can’t remember the others, I picked them during “happy hour” and my copy is home-don’t know who to root for.

          • Sooner Ray says:

We’ll get us a backer, they will be watching this season and there will be one or two slobber over the opportunity they see with this defense. Just wait on it!. Do they have better beer up there in Kirksville?

          • Gary Robbins says:

Can’t say at this point haven’t tried them all! Wife has relatives up in this area. Going to a corn festival tomorrow-whatever that is. Come up on Thursday and just figured out only about 35 miles from Iowa.

          • Sooner Ray says:

Bring some of that corn home! I bet it would rival the famous Bixby corn.

          • OUknowitscomin says:

Best corn around in Iowa. Not even close. Unfortunately it’s late in season and it’s past the prime. Loses some taste and a little rubbery this time of year. Still decent though.

          • Zack says:

I agree and the good thing is almost all our targets at linebacker are still uncommitted. And 3 5 stars KLS, jefferson and deberry (who if he isn’t a 5 star, is one of the top 4 stars) will all be here at the same time. My hope is they get excited about playing together and convince each other that this is the spot. I don’t think those 3 are considering any of the same schools except ou.

  • Zack says:

Well soso had 484 yards and 6 tds from what poster on os said. That’s insane too bad ou is no longer in on this kid.

  • SoonerWarVet says:

Maybe the OU vs. Tennessee game is the “shocker” considering the status of Tennessee as of late. I would consider the game “off the radar”.

  • DCinAZ says:

LOL Game Day doesn’t want to be present when OU destroys another SEC team and we break their stage again and they continue to snub OU.

  • RBear says:

QB Rating is for passing only, not sure on raw- Didn’t know how to figure the cumulative QB passing Rating either so both games are listed, LaTech/Tulsa

Respectable but would have liked to have seen more passing TD’s after these first two opponents.

  • Bennie Owen says:

WTF? when its OU in a prime time matchup vs an SEC team everybody knows is gonna get beat, Gameday decides to go all rogue and focus on some FCS shitbutt schools? The bias is obvious, but for fucks sake it does get tiresome at times.

Bennie, we all feel your frustration. However, can you communicate it a little more PG rated. Thanks bud.
