Open Post | Weekend, Jul. 29th – 31st (UPDATE Sun., 8:24 am)

The big news this weekend is obviously today’s BBQ, and the many high-profile visitors who are expected to be in Norman. Even day of, we’re still updating the visitor list so be sure to check it out for all the latest.

There should be plenty of news in the coming days, but in the meantime here a few quick notes.

Chuck Filiaga:  We had mentioned that 2017 OL Chuck Filiaga was hoping to make it to today’s BBQ, unfortunately that won’t happen. “I won’t be able to make it, sadly. But I do hope to get up there soon,” Filiaga told TFB. – (Super K)

Anthony Cook: As Brandon noted yesterday, Oklahoma will host one of the best 2018 CBs in the country, Anthony Cook (Houston, TX) today. Cook visited with a couple of his high school coaches for the spring game back in April if you recall. And he will be joined on this trip by his mother, which is never a bad thing when it comes to recruiting. – (Super K)

Kenneth Murray: Sooners will also host 2017 LB Kenneth Murray (Missouri City, TX), which will be Murray’s first visit to Oklahoma. And said visit will be important as Murray is set to decide between his Top 6 (TAMU, Nebraska, Texas, Houston, Michigan, Oklahoma) on August 10th. So the Sooners have a great chance to make their case before he decides.

Earlier this week Murray spoke with TFB about the upcoming trip to Norman. “Man, I’m extremely excited. I’ve been hearing so much about how live and nice it is up there. I can’t wait!” – (Super K)

Levi Jones: One name that seems to be under the radar for OU when it comes to 2017 LB recruiting is that of Levi Jones. The talented Austin product had a brother at Texas before transferring to Arizona, the former of which may explain why some presume the Sooners’ chances may not be that great.

However, one thing working in OU’s favor is the fact Jones’ family is close with Baker Mayfield’s family. Jones was set to visit Oklahoma on Friday for the BBQ, but had to cancel on Wednesday.  Jones did inform TFB, though, that he will be making a visit up to Norman soon. – (Brandon)

2018 Recruiting Following #SoonerSquad17’s Lead: It’s not much of a leap to say 2017 recruiting is as hot as ever for Oklahoma at this point. That’s why the BBQ on Friday could help propel a similar scenario for OU in 2018. The Sooners have all but one committed player (Marcelias Sutton) expected to be in attendance on Friday, including both of their current 2018 commits in Brey Walker and Jordon Austin. With all of these guys on campus at once, the coaching staff would like to see the commits build a bond with those uncommitted recruits they are bringing in for the ‘invite only’ event.

With all that in mind, the Sooners have a pretty deep list of 2018 talent coming in with OU offers like Casey Thompson, Josh Proctor, Joshua Moore, Darrell Simpson & Verone Mckinley. Plus two players we expect to be offered relatively soon (or at least at some point during the season) in 2018 Tulsa Union defensive back Patrick Fields & 2018 Midwest City DE/OLB Jalen Redmond.

TFB had an update on Fields earlier in the week and continue to hear that things are moving in the right direction with regards to an offer being extended. In fact, that offer could come as soon as Friday which would make it Fields’ second Big 12 offer in the last week after receiving one from TCU several days ago.

As far as Redmond goes, the Sooners, along with many other schools across the country, are very interested in the 2018 star with no real film of which to speak. Despite that, Redmond is a big, rangy defender that has actually made his name on the basketball court the last couple years. However, he has since decided to play football again and turned a lot of heads in the spring, even garnering a Memphis offer. – (Brandon)
