Open Post | Thursday, Mar. 31st (UPDATE 4:25 pm)

Hunter Rison: 2017 WR Hunter Rison (Ann Arbor, MI) is expected to visit next week, and I spoke with someone earlier this week who is close to Rison that confirmed the trip was still set. However, last night I received word that based on the number of receivers already committed and where things stand with one other particular receiving target, the Sooners may no longer have the room in their 2017 class to take Rison.

As such, we reached out to an individual this morning who is close to Rison and this person told TFB the 2017 WR will no longer be visiting. We hope to have more clarity on this shortly, but for now we can confirm that, as of right now, the visit has been cancelled. – (Super K & Brandon)

Myles Jones: One of the tallest DBs in the 2017 class, Myles Jones (Magnolia, TX), confirmed last night he is still scheduled to make the trip up to Norman today. Jones was an unknown player on the recruiting trail not too long ago, but in the past month or so has picked up offers from Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Baylor, TCU and others.

Jones is listed at 6’4″ and plays cornerback for his high school. We are told the Sooners believe he can potentially play any position in the secondary. – (Super K)

– UPDATE (11:19 am): You may recall from his tweet and/or Monday’s Open Post, but OU defensive lineman Du’Vonta Lampkin was scheduled to have a procedure on his knee today. A source close to Lampkin shared with TFB that the surgery went well, and the doctor’s estimate he should be fully recovered in 4-6 weeks.

– UPDATE (12:02 pm): Hope this isn’t a distraction for Saturday. Also, fwiw, probably not the only assistant OU loses after this season either.

– UPDATE (2:52 pm): We had this in one of the daily posts earlier in the week (and alluded to it in the previous update), but on the chance anyone missed it and/or didn’t know what/who we were referencing in the noon(ish) update.

Bummed about Rison. Just a feeling, but I think he’s going to have an outstanding career.

    • Super K says:

A little bummed myself. Kid is pretty down from what I gather. He was really excited.

      • Boom says:

Things work out for a reason. Rison may/may not be with OU but he will do well. Things change over time so we will see.

      • Lincoln Hawk says:

Do you know if he ever tried to commit?

      • Mark_in_VA says:

Gah. Makes it even worse. Wish we could bring in every kid who wants to be a Sooner.

      • Travis Coyle says:

I hope everything works out for Rison.

      • hOUligan says:

Sorry to hear it. Kid seemed to be ‘doing the right thing’ and visiting before committing. Guess he could have done the ‘current thing’ and committed first then look around. He needs to keep open ’cause it is likely a WR or 2 will de-commit.

  • Lincoln Hawk says:

Wow, mind blower on Rison. I thought he was already locked in. I guess it goes to show you have to pull the trigger early to reserve your spot.

    • RocketCitySooner says:

I wonder what it’s like to have to call someone who you strongly recruited to tell them you’re no longer interested?

      • Lincoln Hawk says:

Probably not pleasant. In all fairness though, they have been telling the recruits to get on the train while there is room. Multiple tweets etc. from the coaches on that.

      • Dick Bump says:

Recruiting a fluid thing, especially with some commits still taking visits. We may not have seen the last of “bad moon” Rison. It’s good the coaches let him know where things stand before the family spent the money on a trip to Norman.

      • MoJoOkie says:

I’m guessing that he somewhat knew the timeline was closing. Played it too close.

    • SoonerMagic76 says:

Yep. Gotta lock in early. It’s tough, but it’s also somewhat of a deterrent of the “wait forever” approach

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

Curious who the other receiver in good standing is?

  • CPSooner says:

So I wonder who the other top notch WR is that we’re in on…hmmm

  • Collin says:

I would imagine the other receiver is Jhamon Ausbon.

  • Swanny says:

Sounds like Omar Manning is all but locked in then

  • Jake says:

Recruits that string out their commitment:

So, when the OU coaches tweet out “Reserve Your Spot”…

    They aren’t just blowing smoke?

  • HardTarget says:

I hope it’s Ausbon. Him and Marvin Wilson are my two big targets. I like Rison but he and a couple of other kids are what I call ‘on the bubble’. These .88 and .89 kids are great, but we need to be targeting AND landing some of these .93 and .94 kids. Ausbon is at .95 I think and that is way too low for him. He has an NFL sized physique and catch radius as a 16 year old. He reminds me of Laquan Treadwell.

I’d love to see Myles Jones in a red zone set though, you aren’t throwing over a 6’4 db.

Also love that I don’t have to wait until noon for an OP thanks Jordan!

    • SoonerfanTU says:

      Is Manning not a .93?

      • HardTarget says:

Ausbon weighs 217 and runs a 4.5. Those are NFL combine stats and he looks like a man running through boys out there. Ausbon is probably the most impressive game tape I’ve seen, and he had an IMG Qb throwing the rock to him so you know he can handle the big arms.

        • SoonerfanTU says:

I get that, but you said OU needs to be targeting and landing some of these .93 and .94 kids. Just pointed out that we are (assuming Manning lands at OU).

      • HardTarget says:

ya, manning is composite .9364..he would be a solid add.

  • metzker says:

Super K,Brandon a hint on a silent? O and thanks.

    • Matt S. says:

I’m curious about the same thing. The Rison news makes me think there is a silent commitment already secured from another big-time receiver.

  • Matt says:

KJ…if you’re out there….what can you tell us about Daimler? How is he in pass pro?

  • Sam Philbeck says:

So it’s either Ausbon or Omar Manning they are talking about, but does that mean the tight end from Cali could be off the board as well or are they holding a TE spot open?

  • vexroid says:

Well hopefully Lamb doesn’t go to LSU then.

    • Zack says:

If he does then we just go after Wallace or find someone else. I think cedar hill has 3 guys that will be at power 5 schools and since we already got Rambo, I’m sure we could pull one of his teammate’s as well.

  • Greenlantern Otis says:

so would they still take ausbon and manning? or is there really just on wr spot left?

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

Been awhile since OU has been able to turn away 4* players. Mighty nice position to be in.

  • HardTarget says:

Ausbon cancels visit yesterday and Rison cancels today.

    • RDC212 says:

Most likely manning then. Though Ausbon did cite the weather has his reason. Thanks Gary England…

    • Lincoln Hawk says:

I think there was an effort on twitter the other day with the #WeWantOmar thing, so maybe it is Manning?

    • Greenlantern Otis says:

weather got ausbon it was crappy out to be flying and driving

  • Eric Hutton says:

Not sure why we couldn’t get two more wideouts especially since we can afford to offer 30 scholarships easily. I for one would like to see Rison and Ausbon join the squad. Boomer

    • MikeyBoom says:

exactly my point below Eric. I agree with you a million percent

    • RDC212 says:

Ausbon will have a spot if he wants it.

    • Bob Edwards says:

We don’t have 30 schollies to offer unless we want to break several NCAA rules. We also need some DL, OL, and LB’s in this class. That is the reality of recruiting. Every scholly you give to one position you lose at another position. So unless you are good with playing WR’s at guard and tackle, you have to stop at a particular number. We are there now.

      • MikeyBoom says:

Wrong. Your not counting on the amount of scholarships you have now. You have to take into count the amount of possible transfers that can happen. Look at the amount of WR’s we have on the roster right now. Tell me other than Westbrook and Andrews (TE/WR), who has proven anything? none. That’s why there comes a point in time coaches need to say you know these guys haven’t shown me anything now lets go find someone who will. Its not like Eric is saying we need to take 10 WR’s. I say if we take 4-5 we should be good. We have enough Depth at both lines but could use some. We have no depth at WR

        • Rick says:

This is what our spring roster shows now, we have 4 more coming in 2016 class, while there may not be stars in this group today, there is probably stars in the making, unproven talent. This group makes a total of 19 currently here (does include walk ons) and 4 coming in this summer. Does not leave much room for any more.
          81 Mark Andrews WR 6-5 244 RSo.
          83 Nick Basquine WR 5-11 192 RSo.
          1 Jarvis Baxter WR 5-11 165 Sr.
          84 Grant Bothun WR 5-11 193 RSr.
          88 Eric DeLay WR 6-2 209 RSr.
          87 Parker Fentriss WR 6-2 196 RFr.
          18 Dahu Green WR 6-4 201 So. ,
          2 John Humphrey WR 5-11 169 RFr.
          80 Sam Iheke WR 6-4 201 RFr. D
          89 Connor Knight WR 6-4 248 RSr.
          5 Geno Lewis WR 6-1 201 RSr.
          82 Ezel McIntee WR 5-10 203 RSo.
          15 Jeffery Mead WR 6-5 187 Jr.
          13 A.D. Miller WR 6-3 189 So.
          86 Lee Morris WR 6-2 207 RFr.
          16 Michiah Quick WR 5-11 183 Jr.
          17 Jordan Smallwood WR 6-2 217 RJr.
          19 Dallis Todd WR 6-3 190 RSo.
          11 Dede Westbrook WR 6-0 170 Sr.

        • SoonerfanTU says:

You can’t take a crazy number of WR’s this year, just b/c we don’t have many proven ones that will be back in 2017. The reason most are unproven, is they haven’t had a shot at playing. They’ll get that shot this year. Enough of them will turn out to be good enough, I’m sure of it.

  • DCinAZ says:

Hmmm…..well if Rison was scheduled to visit in a few days, and he has canceled because the coaches feel good about another WR, then I can only deduce that another BOOM! is coming our way.

  • MikeyBoom says:

I think its not that good of a sign. Lets remember that CeDee Lamb is a soft commit with LSU in his heart. Also, Rambo said when he committed he will still be taking all his OV’s. That shows he’s still interested in looking around. So we could only hope Reagor is a hard commit. If any position was one we need to over sign its at WR, aka the position we have hardly any proven talent other than Westrbook and Andrews. Rison looks legit and I think this could come back to not be a good thing for us, but I hope I’m wrong on all of this lol

    • DCinAZ says:

Rambo is best friends Reagor and they’re going to play together in college. I don’t think him taking visits mean jack other than him wanting to take advantage of the process and enjoy it.

      • MikeyBoom says:

yes because these kids in todays recruiting world have shown that taking other visits means nothing. Remember when we thought Chris Daniels was solid to us only to visit texas? Then he decommits. We’ve had our fair share of guys decommit from us after taking OV’s somewhere else. My point is why not take Rison when WR is a position we really could use all the help we could get at

        • Zack says:

I’m not sure anyone thought Daniels was solid.

          • MikeyBoom says:

I thought he was solid once he made a cake and all committing to OU. That showed me he really put the time and thought into where he wanted to go. But hey I may just me a moron lol

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

            That was before Texas offered.

          • Zack says:

I think he put the thought in to committing to OU but the problem is Texas offered the day before his announcement.

Edit. He wasn’t going to delay his day in the spotlight.

          • MikeyBoom says:

My point is committing somewhere to this generation isn’t our definition of committing. If you commit and still are taking OV’s that shows 2 things. Your smart and your going to enjoy the once in a lifetime process and 2. your still interested in seeing what other programs have to offer you. Rambo is going to do is and so is Lamb. Wont surprise me if Reagor does it also

          • Zack says:

And I think this staff has caught up with the times. They’re taking early commits this year and living with the chance that 3-4 will flip somewhere else but 3-4 flip every year when they try to make kids wait until “they know OU is home”

          • MikeyBoom says:

Your proving my point. That’s why I think whoever is recruiting the WR position should take Rison instead of telling him sorry too late. Because you never know will stick and who will leave

          • MoJoOkie says:

And so now you think Rison would stay but those already committed won’t? lol. Some will come and some will go just like every other year. I don’t think you should offer every WR out there and expect all but 3-4 will move on. Offer the ones you want (think are better) and if they move on, adjust and adapt.

          • MikeyBoom says:

I never said Rison would stay but having him on the board if one of the already committed guys left would hurt less don’t you think? Instead of telling him sorry we cant take you anymore.

          • MoJoOkie says:

So who all do you offer as insurance commits? And if none of the 1’s opt out do you pull a Saban and tell Rison on signing day that the guys you really wanted all stayed around, so “sorry”?

          • Zack says:

I think this just proves where they stand with rison. I think the kd Nixon kid is better and they’ve already been recruiting Nixon as a backup plan. So if they lose a receiver or 2 they have other guys they can look at. There’s also a few in state guys that they could look at late if they lose guys.

          • Rick says:

I was with you on Daniels, but watching the tweets, the texsa staff was playing the race card, and Daniels was deep into the discussion about the young man that was wrongfully charged for sexual assault, ruined his football career and released years later after it was too late. I agree about the racism is all about evil, I Strongly (pun intended) disagree with one staff using it against another staff to move a kid with no basis for truth.

        • DCinAZ says:

You have to keep in mind, most of these kids have never been on a plane, left their city much less left their state.

          • MikeyBoom says:

That means zero. When it comes to figuring out where they want to play college ball, they will take any free transportation given. Especially if its free and your going to be treated like a King when you get on campus for your OV

          • DCinAZ says:

That’s my point. Most of them have never been anywhere and they get free plane tickets to travel and be doted on. I don’t blame them.

          • Maranatha846 says:

Just don’t consider any of them committed til they sign. We talk about the ones we lost, how about the ones we took from someone else?

        • HardTarget says:

Daniels was halfway out already because of family issues.

          • MikeyBoom says:

Daniels was just a recent example. We’ve had our fair share of players committed to us then they take a simple OV for fun and no seriousness then all of a sudden they decommit from us and commit to that program.

      • Rick says:

Built in support system for them, a good deal for them both.

    • Rick says:

This is not the most recent news coming out on him. The most recent stuff is saying he is solid, but still visiting. It is a fun time for young guys.

      • MikeyBoom says:

Exactly Rick. I don’t blame anyone for wanting to take all there visits if someone else is paying for them. That’s awesome and I wish every kid would do it but I think not taking Rison could come back to bite us in the you know what lol

    • HardTarget says:

Honestly OVs are great opportunities to get free stuff, to get to see other parts of the country, to get laid, and to have fun.

I am not worried about Rambo decommitting as I think JR is the better player and he isn’t going anywhere.

      • MikeyBoom says:

LOL totally agree with you there. If I had a kid, I would make him take all his OV’s before committing. But this generation of kids has its fair share of kids who will go wherever they feel loved more and OV’s have a way of making people think twice.

  • Brian says:

Gotta be Omar Manning – I heard Jalen Reagor mention “Omar” in an interview the other day when talking about Rambo and Lamb (as in the OU WRs). All but inevitable..

  • SoonerinLondon says:

    Waaa, waaa, waaa.

It is almost a year before anyone can sign. There will be many planned visits come and go and many commits waver. Any hand-wringing at this point is wasted. Just enjoy the ride and trust the coaches will end up signing the best they can.

  • Will Narramore says:

If there was ever a year to over sign WRs I would think this would be the year considering how little proven commodities we have on campus for next year and especially the years to follow. Shocked we can’t take Rison and Manning when outside of maybe DL this is our biggest need this recruiting cycle.

    • MikeyBoom says:

Boom. Don’t state facts lol some people think committing now means we have signed them already

      • RDC212 says:

Trust the coaches. They’ve got their finger on the pulse of these kids. They know what they’re doing.

        • Will Narramore says:

Hopefully. Parrish Cobb walked last year because they thought they had Mayden and then he committed to Bama. Always some sort of guessing element involved but I’m sure the coaches no exactly what they are doing. Stoops has been doing this for 17 years afterall

          • SoonerfanTU says:

OU didn’t stop recruiting or wanting Cobb last year. He either changed his mind, or got butt-hurt that OU was recruiting other good db’s. Either way, not exactly apples to apples with the WR position this year.

          • DCinAZ says:

I heard Cobb was getting a lot of animosity and pressure from Waco residents to stay home.

  • Robert Boone says:

This is a different year for OU recruiting. You snooze you lose. Let the word be out.

  • metzker says:

I keep losing the TFB and have to fight to get back grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

  • Collin says:

Yes it’s true that there is still a ton of time until these boys are officially sooners. It’s also fair to say that we were shaded a couple of times by some recruits who seemed like locks. However, I think we are completely underestimating the power of this “SoonerSquad’17” atmosphere they’re creating. Now, there is pressure from not one but multiple commits to stay the path and not let the other ones down. I think this will be the biggest difference this year on wavering recruits.

    • Greenlantern Otis says:

yes its not just the fans pushing for it its their teammates and fellow recruits saying he come ball with us lets build somethint special. and youve got one got that flipped from osu leading them that shows how strong ou is and that hey kids flip u just gotta keep goin next man up

    • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

I agree. The bond these kids are forming is going to be too much for them to de commit.

    • DCinAZ says:

I think the way we finished last year in getting left hung out to dry by two late big time defections really pissed off our coaches and they decided to re-evaluate how they do things.

      • Collin says:

As it should have. Sometimes you just need a swift kick in the a** right? haha.

        • DCinAZ says:

I agree. I haven’t like our recruiting process for several years. But what they’ve done in in terms of their current strategy is nothing short of brilliant so I give full credit where credit is due.

    • soonerthunder says:

I’m not sure anyone is underestimating the power of SS17, or at least, I haven’t noticed it. However, along with what you said about them I’d add that I noticed that BS took a much more active role in recruiting than I’ve ever remembered him taking since his first years as coach. That’s the biggest thing, imo.

      • Collin says:

Would definitely agree that Bob is involved more. Very similar to what DCinAZ said below. A full on overhaul was made by our coaching staff in our approach to recruiting.

      • paganpink says:

What about winning? Isn’t that possibly the biggest boon to our recruiting? Playing in the semi-finals for the national championship is achieved by very few teams and none of them have the storied history of OU.

        • Collin says:

You’re right. It’s hard to pinpoint only one specific reason, but I guess the important thing is that the timing has come together quite nicely for all these things.

          • Bob Edwards says:

In fact there is no one specific reason, very seldom is. Each player makes his own decisions and each puts different weight on different factors. In the last couple of years we have gotten a number of hot younger coaches, been in the playoffs, and started a renovation project. Heck we even had a walkon in the Heisman race. All of these and a number of other factors are adding up.

      • Boom says:

Sup Thunder. Hope all is well. SS17 is playing a major factor IMO. I agree with you and think the house he built took more time than any of us realize. Also, the hip didn’t help either but both are behind him and he looks prime.

      • T. Rob says:

Hey I tell you what Bob Stoops would open and hold doors for us on the visit to Norman. After last week scrimmage. He immediately came over to join the recruits on their tour. Hoped on the bus and went everywhere we did. I can’t say that for other Big 12 and SEC schools we visited. That’s one thing that stood out to us on our visits to Norman. He’s really grinding.

  • Will Narramore says:

I still think an Omar Manning, Reagor, Lamb, and Rambo class would be the arguably the best WR haul in the country. Simmons and Gundy really hitting their stride in recruiting

  • Robert Boone says:

Anything on Marvin Wilson’s interest? Does he have a top list yet or made any comments about OU?

  • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Do y’all think the change in coaching hires ( black coaches) have made the biggest impact? I’m not trying to throw the race card out there but there’s got to me some correlation between the two. Or is this more to the success of last year and making the playoff run?

    • HardTarget says:

Most of your elite position coaches are black because most of your elite position players are black. Thats the correlation. A long NFL career is a pipedream for most players, but coaching college ball isn’t.

      • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Fair enough. I personally love all the hires we’ve had. I think keeping up with the culture of today’s players has been the best thing we’ve done thus far.

    • DCinAZ says:

It’s not a “race card” but yes it matters. Who relates better to a young black athlete? A 57 yr old white guy? Or a 31 yr old black guy who grew up the way they did and has already played D-1 ball and been through the process?

    • soonerinks says:

Both are probably the correct answer.

    • Rick says:

I don’t know the answer to your question in reality. Only data crunched into hard and fast facts could prove that answer. IMHO the “best person” for the job is the best person, no matter what color skin they may have. It is evil to discriminate on basis of color, The best person should get the job.

      • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Well I agree but the fact of the matter is it still goes on.

        • Rick says:

To hire a white coach “because he is white”, is down right evil. The same is true of hiring a black coach simply because he’s black. OU has some incredible coaches and have had in the past. I don’t think any of them were great because of their color, rather they were great reguardless of color. Discriminatory hiring does still go on, but I don’t think it’s a problem at OUr school.

    • Rick says:

  • Bob Edwards says:

I continually hear people say, that “Oh, but we will keep a slot for him.” Here is the reality of recruiting in the NCAA. You are limited to 85 scholarships. You can’t sign more than 25 in one class (there can be an exception if you sign an early enrollee). With 22 positions, plus specialist like punters and kickers and differences based on formations, that leaves you with about 3.5 scholarships per position.
What this means is that, if you load up at one position, you have to short another position. Now you can afford one or two of those in a given year, but then you have to go the other way the next year. There are simply limits to how many we can take.
Fortunately, our coaches understand that or we would probably never have enough linemen, fullbacks, or specialists.
We are there with the WR. Now the coaches will keep in touch with these guys and, if another slot opens up, we can revisit them. The good news right now is that we have plenty of time to make it up if we lose one.

      • soonerinks says:

Seem to recall that you are max’ed out at 105 but certainly could be wrong.

      • Bob Edwards says:

NCAA rules allow for 105 players to be rostered before the first day of class or the first game, whichever comes first. When school is in session, there is no limit to the number of players on the roster.

So you can have 20 walk-ons in summer practice, more if you are under your scholarship limit. A “preferred” walk on is someone they guarantee one of these slots to.

    • Dwebb_96 says:

You just answered my question (before i could even ask it) With the mindset of 17 year olds that change week to week or even day by day, when you basically tell someone like Rison, “sorry we are full, thanks for the interest, what is your plan B?” In todays world it is increasingly harder to hang onto these early recruits. OU flips others all of the time, it will happen to us (again). I was just wondering how the coaches get back onto a former recruits radar.

      • Bob Edwards says:

Yep, it’s the reality. You can sit in whine about it, or you can plan on it. Our assistants seem to be smart enough to know that you don’t stop talking until the letters are signed. Even then, you keep in touch. We have had several players over the years that we recruited, went somewhere else, and ended up at OU after a transfer. Seventeen year olds sometimes make the wrong decision.

    • Eric Hutton says:

How did we sign 28 recuits two years in a row before last year? I thought it was just 85 total.

      • Bob Edwards says:

There are some games you can play with early enrollees. If you sign less than twenty five in the previous year or some of the previous twenty-five leave you can assign the early enrollee to the prior year.

  • Robert Boone says:

Recruiting has been great so far, but man, I would love to see them bring some big quality D lineman this year.

re: the WR situation, just wanted to quickly point out/remind that for all intents and purposes, TEs are essentially WRs in this Lincoln Riley offense.

So when it come to a kid, like say, Calcaterra, IMO that’s basically someone who, on OU’s board, is going to count as a WR.

I get that may be a “DUH!” type of comment from some, but I’ve seen so many ?s about why the WR #s don’t make sense so I simply offer this as a possible theory/explanation towards that.

  • Fear The Magic says:

I wonder if Ausbon cancelled his visit because of the weather ( as he stated ) or for the same reason that Rison is cancelling. While I’d be fine getting Calcaterra whos hudl is pretty impressive, Id rather have Manning or Ausbon at this point if we only have one spot open.

The NCAA really needs to come up with a way to “black out” coaching moves during bowl season/playoffs etc. Either make your hire prior to or you have to wait till said team is done for the season. Too many coaching moves during these periods have had very negative impacts to teams and outcomes.

  • Jason Vos says:

So why hasn’t Manning committed yet?

  • T. Rob says:

Hello fellow TFBers. Most Dont want to admit but the Sooner are doing a overhaul in recruiting after last years semi championship with Clemson if you were watching the game you seen OU just plainly out matched by the level of talent with depth Clemson had. We over achieved in way. But now you put a class like 17 with OU staff and we then are rivals to Alabama and Ohio Clemson because we a
lways had the coaches just not the pool of talented players. And that’s no disrespect to last year tewm. Their the reason most believe and want part this year. I rather over acheive then underachieve.

    • Jake says:

      2 words: Baker Mayfield

    • hOUligan says:

Hey T Rob. It’s amazing what can happen when a few top rated kids like Tyrese and Barnes commit early and get others excited about being part of something. New territory for Bob and OU. I’m liking it. A lot.

      • T. Rob says:

Oh yeah no doubt. IMO you put this coaching staff with a top 5 class talent pool they’ll get you tha that national championship within 4 years

    • DCinAZ says:

I said last year on LT that this team wasn’t a national title team because of the lack of difference maker talent in the trenches. I still believe that is somewhat the case until I see more dominance along the lines.

      • Jake says:

Very fair assessment. Here’s to a speedy recovery for Lampkin ?

        & ?

      • T. Rob says:

Need the d line to step up

        • DCinAZ says:

Definitely. I think the Oline will be okay. They were just really young at the OT position and that’s a guaranteed problem on just about any team.

The talent along the Dline is what concerns me most. Outside of Walker, I don’t see any next level talent there. I’m hoping that the younger bulls will get in the rotation this season and take over.

          • Scott says:

Oline will be solid this year , size wise should compete with a Bama and Clemson. Now for the Dline we need these Younger guys to step up and compete for the starting job.

          • Matt says:

sounds like Austin Roberts can be that type of player and the way players talk about Lampkin and Gallimore reminds me of the way players talked about McCoy and Adrian Taylor in practices during their redshirt years. Although, I don’t know that the guys talking about Lampkin and Gallimore are as talented as the guys talking about Lampkin and Gallimore..

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

You don’t always need NFL talent to win a CFB title, just great college players. Look at the 2000 D Line. That said, I am not sure that Dimon, Wade, DJ, and Romar are great college players.

      • Bob Edwards says:

There were OU teams in the past where Darlington and Kasitati never would have seen the field even as back ups.

        • DCinAZ says:

On any real OU team, neither would’ve ever sniffed the field. Our talent level dropped dramatically for a few seasons and the people pointing that out mercilessly in the media weren’t wrong.

        • Jake says:

How the hell did Nila survive any time on the field when the dude maxes out 12 reps on the bench press?

          Surely he’s hurt… right?

        • Matt says:

          2007-2008 perhaps?

        • Tony B says:

This years line will be so much more physical than last year it’s not even funny and that should make Joe, Samaje, and Baker smile from ear to ear. The two best players on the line last year were a freshman and a redshirt freshman if that says anything. If you go back and watch any film of last years big games you will see who missed the majority of their blocks or just got manhandled (especially toward the end of the season and bowl game). It wasn’t big O or Samia. Darlington had the spot due to his intelligence to make correct line calls and experience otherwise there’s no way he is out there. Nila was solely because of lack of depth and he being a senior. You’re absolutely correct Bob there are OU teams they wouldn’t have even been on period but the talent around them last year covered up a lot of their deficiencies. We will see a few missed blocks in the first few games while all these newbies gel but once they settle in I believe this young line will be a hell of a group for years to come.

Attrition, death, injuries, unforeseen circumstances are all facts of life. Adversity can reveal character and determination, motivation to win. Just have to believe our team can focus, survive and advance. Saturday is the biggest game of their lives so far. They will give us all their best effort.

I’ll just say this, I’m not too worried about losing Manning to another team right now.

      • Brien Brown says:

So how big would it be to get Manning arguable the best WR on OUr board and then landing perhaps, Wilson and Okudah along with Browning. This class is already too strong but, man those 4 would really be a sweet deal!

        • Rick says:

Brien, do you really think they will take another WR in this class. We currently have 19 on the roster (not all scholly players), and 4 more coming in, in a few months. I don’t see it, unless a 5*, too good to be true, falls in their laps, I just don’t see them taking anymore WR’s. We need some Big Uglies, and a few LB’s still.

          • Brien Brown says:

Rick, I really do. Mean I think we lose what Baxter, Westbrook and Lewis in this coming season. I am also seeing some on the WR’s on our roster are walkons and not scholly players. Yes well have some young talent, but it’s been said some of those guys could be D players instead of O Motley being one. Humphrey, Mead, Todd, Andrews, Green, Jones, Farrar, Hardy, and Miller all seem like legit WR’s but, think that Andrews has a big year this year he could leave early if not this year then the next I am guessing and we don’t want to get in a position we where at before void of talent at WR. I think we need 2-3 more OL guys and 3-4 DL guys and at LB we add Browing or Hines or a long shot in Moses or someone else like Jordan-Sweeling 2 of those guys to go along with Draper we will be good. Kelly, Jackson and DeBerry will be studs IMO. DB’s are set, and that TE kid may count as a WR but, still they won’t walk away from a Manning or a Lewis if the want to come to OU, IMO!

          • Rick says:

If we were Alabama, and used the grey shirt to ruin young recruits careers we could recruit everyone without conscience. We are losing 3, bringing in 4, with 3 verbals for 2017 now. By your number which I agree with you are talking about 10ish, that would make 21, I don’t know what we’re looking at for this class, but I think we have to be close. Give’s the coaches something to think about, and gives you and I something to discuss. It’s all good, when we’re talking about these kind of problems.

          • Brien Brown says:

See I think someone said earlier that Manning is tight with OUr 2 most recent commits and that they train together. And Stephan stated below looking like he is OUrs to lose. Again Idk we say no a talent like that. Mean with the hope he pans out unlike some of OUr previous 5 star guys. I think the coaches know and I think we just want to know lol. But, unlike past years this is a good issue to have. I have felt Stoops has been putting together real good peices here and there the last 2-3 classes maybe not the most glitz and glamorous classes according to some but, the right pieces like he did with his earlier classes and let the play do the talking and the kids will come. Helps the kids we have already are all in and recruiting harder than the coaches lol.
