– Patrice Rene: Yet another new offer from Kerry Cooks, again on the east coast, went out to 2016 CB Patrice Rene (6’2″ 195 – Alexandria, VA). Rene had just left a recent Rivals camp when he first got word OU had offered. Already holding offers from schools like Ohio State, Penn State, Tennessee & Virginia Tech just to name a few, Rene certainly isn’t short on suitors. But did share with TFB that “there aren’t many places like Oklahoma, so it definitely stands out.”
Rene went on to say he doesn’t have a list of top schools at the moment, but now that OU has offered he is hoping to get by for a visit in the near future. Rene said he and Coach Cooks are still getting to know one another so the relationship is still pretty new. He also gave the impression that distance isn’t likely to play that much of a role in his recruitment, which of course can only help OU’s chances. – (Brandon)
– Darez Diggs: We talked yesterday about another Diggs, Trevon, whom the Sooners extended an offer to, but there is yet another Diggs brother, Darez, who OU has also begun the eval process on. The elder Diggs is also a 2016 cornerback, but coming from the JUCO ranks out of Iowa Western. The two brothers have been pretty open about their desire to play together at the next level, so were the Sooners to offer both it would only help to increase their chances of landing the talented duo.
When we spoke with Trevon, we asked if OU offering his brother would put the Sooners out in front. And while he would not go so far as to admit that, he was again adamant about their preference to play together. “Yes, I want to go to school with him (Darez).”
Kerry Cooks is still getting a feel for Darez Diggs (6’3″ 205), but you can quickly see from his film the tools, most notably Diggs’ size, the first-year OU defensive backs coach is looking for in a corner. Even for a kid his size, Diggs is a fluid athlete out on that island.
As we’ve discussed here a number of times now, OU’s secondary numbers in this 2016 class are going to be a little tight. So it will be interesting to see whether or not Cooks pulls the trigger on an offer here. – (Brandon)
– Maurice Chandler: The 2016 NEO cornerback seems to be landing offers almost daily. TFB caught up with him this past Sunday to see how things were going and, of course, to see where things stood with OU following this recent string of offers. Chandler maintains he is still open, but also very high on OU. He’s working on another visit to Norman and continues to speak highly of his would-be position coach, Kerry Cooks. This one could drag out a little longer than OU fans are probably hoping for, but the Sooners remain in a good position to eventually land his commitment. – (Brandon)

First! Love CBs with size…and the Diggs family isn’t a bad one to get in with!
I’m not sure if this has been covered, but are they related to Quandre Diggs at UT?
Stefon Diggs WR, Maryland. soon to be drafted.
Thank you!
No the are related to Stephan Diggs the WR from Maryland.
Thanks!
Taye Diggs son. Ok, not really.
How many DBs are we looking to take?
Expectation is 2 CBs & 1 S, but they could make an exception (or two, maybe) for the right kid/s depending on what their board looks like.
Who would you put as their top two priorities at CB? Mayden and Chandler?
That’s probably fair as it stands today.
Ninth!
…..for the few nhler’s………hope you got to see game 3 of ducks/jets last nite…….one of the best playoff games ever, ducks 5-4 in ot………..what john brooks would call a seat-squirmer….carry on
Saw part of it. Excellent game for certain. I’m old enough to remember John Brooks, & the Blazers at the old FG Arena. Ok, my friend, who was the Raider Line?
got hooked (pun intended) on hockey as a okc teen watching the blazers……remember the packed arena on a weekend nite, blazers/oilers and fights in the stands…..you got me on the raider line, clue me in
Have been watching alot of the playoffs. Caps are my team. Got a much needed ot win last evening. Read where Chi/Nash went 3ot. Sick!
ranger fan here….
the parity is amazing…..
enjoying your series……get the next game, don’t go back to ny down 1….good chance this goes 7…..
watched the hawks/preds marathon…felt sorry for nash, they really needed that and were down one of their best players…….
jets/ducks is a very entertaining war…..could easily be 3 zip the other way…..
good luck with the caps
How about this line up
Maurice Chandler (CB)
Jared Mayden (CB)
Trevon Diggs (CB)
Darez Diggs (S)
And close shop on DB’s unless some really high ranking prsopect is at reach
This sounds really nice. But I would be really happy with just getting mayden.
Wonder how Cale Gundy is doing out there recruiting WR’s. Haven’t heard much from him.
I bet the going is more difficult that b4 when he only had to recruit one great player a year really.
Now he has to get in multiple guys. He’ll be fine though
After the system proves out, it’ll be easier.
Fundamentals of grabbing talent is the same….Cale is a straight shooter ..even with mixon and others, he never promises anything. The kids that truly wanna be here and work hard know that and I think we’ll be okay. Btw,cale and Riley hit the trail hard and pulled in some skill this year
I really like the Rene offer, his technique appears to be very sound.
Love the size that the Rene brings but I didn’t see anything is his DB clips that made me super excited. When the tape shifted to his WR highlights on the other hand then things got really salty. Love the speed.
Do we know what kind of CB’s Cooks is going after? Does he like the bigger guys too?
I’m not a fan. I think going up against the spread, the smaller or more average sized CB’s do a better job. Would it be nice to have a good, big, CB? Sure. But I’d rather had a good, small CB than an average, big CB.
Gotta have physical CBs to play bump and run. We saw what happened last year, w/o that type of CB. Can’t wait to see PJ and Antoine.
If they play like Zanchez then yes.
Agree.
Physical is the key word when talking bump and run coverage. Size doesn’t necessarily equate physical when talking CB’s. Reevis arguably the best at B&R coverage is 5’11”, 195. Lester Hayes “Lester the Molester” one of the all time best at Bump and Run 6’1″, 185. But as 76 put it being physical is a must when playing B&R.

Peter Jayy is coming folks.
Has anyone heard much on the Dline recruiting? Seems really quiet beside the kid from NEO.
Good question. Im 100% sure Diron Reynolds is a good coach but Im beginning to get nervous about his recruiting abilities. I know its early but I want to hear that hes “work’n it” hard.
Im not on twitter so I don’t see what all hes doing but I haven’t heard on any boards about him even being active in recruiting im not saying he isn’t but just no news to read.
I know its a dead horse but Monty leaving is obviously hurting recruiting no disrespect to the other coaches but he seemed to have that “it” factor when relating to recruit, and always maintaining relationships with the family and the kids.
No two ways about it. Monty was a major loss.
No evidence to support your assertion that we’d be doing better with Monty.
I think it is important to not confuse style with results. Monty’s style was to be very visible on social media so we saw a lot of what he was doing. That does not seem to be Reynolds’ style. What is less clear though is how Reynolds’ results will match up to Monty’s. We probably won’t know that until the end of the recruiting cycle.
In my opinion Coach Reynolds is more the teacher than salesman. If you ever listen to Coach Switzer, that man could sell ice to an Eskimo. Not saying that’s bad, but very rare you get both a good teacher and recruiter as well. Just my opinion again, but from what I’ve read, seen and heard about Diron Reynolds, his demeanor more of Tony Dungy…..And that ain’t a bad thing to have.
Its good to be a great teacher but if you dont have very good talent to teach it will only go so far. Thats not to say that Diron wont bring in good talent but personally Id feel more confident if we were getting some solid feedback from a few of the prospects that he’s going after.
You are right….I guess what I’m saying is he seems more laid back than Monty. Time will tell on the recruiting, but I’m with you.
Josh Heupel and Jay Norvell also think talent trumps teaching.
Wanna tell me where I said talent trumps teaching?
Ouch! Felt that one all the way in Cali…
I could definitely understand some recruiting concerns as things have been quiet in regards to his name, but if statistics mean anything and there is an understanding that a defensive line must play well for a defense to be successful then it did not seem to be a problem at Stanford for our man:
2014 Stats:
#2 Scoring defense
#7 rushing defense
#3 total D
#11 opponent first downs
#17 TFL
#6 sacks
What I’m getting at is that the guy can take your “2-3 star” and have him playing like a “4-5 star”
I believe Diron just joined Stanford in 2014 so he certainly wasnt coaching kids that he himself recruited. Again, I have no doubt that hes a good coach. Just concerned about his recruiting abilities thats all.
Very valid point. He doesn’t necessarily need to bring in highly touted blue-chippers because he is capable of getting the most out of them, so hopefully he can at bring in prospects with high ceilings.
We can’t really know until signing day. Last year, with Monty, only two players who committed early stayed with their commitment. OU under Stoops has traditionally closed late.
Sounds like OU has moved from Williams
What Williams? Not registering right now.
OLB – E Striker
DE – C Tapper
DT – M Romar – C Walker
DE – C Walker – D Orso
OLB – J Evans
(ILB) – D Alexander
ILB – F Shannon
CB – Z Sanchez
CB – J Thomas
SS – A Thomas
FS – H Byrd – S Parker
(NB) – S Parker – Will Johnson
How about Will Johnson instead of A Thomas? And you are forgetting about Bond. Walker and Romar will be inside with Tapper/Striker/Bond a combo on DE/LB…
I like Parker at FS and Thomas at SS with Johnson at NB but had to fit Byrd in there someway. I am ok with it, just really like J Thomas at OLB a lot of options with him there and Shannon inside.
Jordan Evans at OLB, my bad.
I would love to see Walker as a 0 tech with Tapper and Orso on 1st down (passing down now days)
I thought Will Johnson was a CB, there’s no way he’s big enough to play as a safety.
He is a cb but he can play nickel fine actually looked really good there in the spring game. And honestly I don’t care if we have a 5’9 180 safety if he can see a play before it happens that’s all we need.
No disrespect, you make a valid point, but until somebody can actually make a play on defense I’d rather not play undersized guys anymore. I know there’s always that undesized guys can as well, if not better, than others at their position but until I see someone really make consistent plays, I’m going to shy away from trying guys out of position.
Is there an app for FB or one in the works? Love this site!!! You can really tell that you guys are passionate about all things Sooner!!
No plans on an app at the moment (or at least none that I’m aware of). Definitely something we can look into down the road tho. Appreciate you reading!
I need something that gets me to the site quicker, lol!!
It’s set as my home page. Keep up there, Sonny. 😉
There’s really no need for an app. It’s a pretty simple site, so just bookmark it for now.
I understand the simplicity, thanks for the heads up
I’m in agreement. I want the site to project on to my bedroom ceiling as soon as I wake up in the morning. Damn lazy of you TFB employees to not already have this available.
Does it seem to anyone else we get in late on a lot of players?
I would somewhat agree with this.
OU never seems interested in getting off to fast start in recruiting. While they’re still going through evals and attempting to build relationships with guys other schools have racked up 9 or 10 commitments from highly rated players. OU just isn’t concerned about pace, but in my opinion if you get a few big time players early, others will follow.
Any update on how it went with the mens bball visitors? Thanks
