Open Post | Monday, Apr. 20th (UPDATE 2:33 pm)

– Austin Roberts: NEO has long been a place where schools could go to find football ready players at a position of need, but this year that seems to be even more the case with a trio of players — LB Chris Baccus, CB Maurice Chandler & DE Austin Roberts — starting to draw national attention. Roberts, a June 2015 grad, is someone Diron Reynolds has been talking to quite a bit and working to arrange another Norman visit. Roberts tells TFB the OU staff should be stopping soon relatively soon, especially now that the spring eval period is officially underway.

While OU has yet to offer, Roberts says he has been given the impression it could be simply a matter of time. And even without said offer, when asked where the Sooners stand in his eyes the answer left little room for interpretation. “OU is number one.” – (Brandon)

– Chanse Sylvie & Rodarius Williams: No shame in saying we were just as surprised as many of you when word broke on Saturday that believed OU lean & 2016 CB Rodarius Williams had committed to Oklahoma State. And because the two are teammates, many were quick to ask if Williams’ commitment could affect OU’s chances with 2016 safety Chanse Sylvie.

So we touched base with Sylvie shortly after the Williams news came down and the impression he gave us is that it will have very little, if any, effect on his own recruitment. Sylvie said he still talks to Kerry Cooks on a near daily basis. And while we told you over the weekend he was unable to make the trip to Norman as had been planned, he said he still has plans to get back “very soon.”

With regards to Williams, I spoke with a source close to his recruitment and the feeling is Williams, like most kids, just got enamored with Ok State this past weekend. For whatever it’s worth, most believe his recruitment is still far from over. Time will tell but at this point I’m not expecting OU to just drop him and move on. Having said that, OU did make several new DB offers on Sunday, so they also won’t be simply waiting around for Williams either. Regardless, Williams is a good kid so congrats to him on this commitment. – (Brandon)

– Sione Heimuli-Lund: Last week we caught wind of the 2017 LB making the trip to Norman, and it was a trip looking to kill two birds with one stone. First, to see his family that had moved to Norman two years ago. Second, to visit a school he had long been interested in.

We had a chance to catch up with Heimuli-Lund following his visit and to say the reviews were positive would be an understatement. His exact words were, “ OU was sick!” Now to translate for you old-timers, that means good and/or awesome (sorry, had to crack that joke). He went on to say the visit just really gave him a good feel for everything OU has to offer. He also had a chance hang out with Dennis Simmons, who recruits his area, and QC coach CJ Ah You. Heimuli-Lund said he really enjoyed spending time with them and that OU told him they would be out to see him later this spring. He was not extended an offer while on campus, but this has much more of a ‘when’ than ‘if’ type of situation. – (Brandon)

– Patrick Johnson: Late on Saturday TFB caught word the OU staff had offered 2016 Washington DC defensive back, Patrick Johnson (6’0″ 180). When we spoke with the versatile athlete shortly following the offer, as you might imagine he seemed instantly excited. He said it was a place, “ he had to visit now!”

Johnson admitted he was still getting to know OU as a program, but that he was definitely going to start doing more research.  Johnson holds offers from Michigan State, Wisconsin, Rutgers and Iowa among others. This seems like a player OU has a legit chance to start making in-roads with. – (Brandon)

– Parnell Motley: Evidently the OU staff has had their eye on the D.C. area because they made a second offer on Sunday afternoon to another 2016 DB in Parnell Motley (6’1″ 170). Again, TFB caught up with him shortly after Kerry Cooks extended the offer.

Motley was quick to say he now plans on visiting Norman later this summer. He currently holds 20+ offers but says there are three schools that stand out for him right now. They are Michigan, Michigan State & Miami. He went on to say that although those are his top schools at the moment, it’s early in the whole process and he is still open to everyone. Motley did mention, however, that it was clear the first time he and Cooks spoke that OU’s new defensive backs coach is ‘a very cool dude.’

In speaking with Motley, he came across as a very mature and level-headed young man. He said distance was not going to weigh very heavily in his recruitment, and reiterated he is very much looking forward to visiting Norman. Hard to get a true sense of things so quickly after OU offered and the typical excitement that comes with it, but it does seem like at the very least the Sooners have a puncher’s chance here. – (Brandon)

– Trevon Diggs: Oklahoma was on an offering spree in the D.C./Maryland area this past weekend. Yet another made by Kerry Cooks was that to freak athlete Trevon Diggs (6’0″ 168 – Gaithersburg, MD). The younger brother of former Maryland standout Stefon Diggs, the 2016 athlete was offered Sunday morning before he went out and made the Nike Opening Finals.

We spoke briefly with Diggs following the offer and in a continuing theme, he seemed excited and expressed an immediate interest in getting to Norman for a visit. And it is somewhat interesting to note that while Diggs already holds offers from a number of top schools, most of those are as a wide receiver. Meanwhile, the Sooners have instead offered him as a defensive back. Hard to say at the moment if that will play any type of role with regards to OU’s chances, but I suppose it starts with first getting him on campus and then taking things from there. Regardless, it’s becoming abundantly clear the impact Cooks is already having for the Sooners on the recruiting trail. – (Brandon)

– East Coast Recruiting: Just wanted to quickly address this recent string of offers and that it certainly isn’t a coincidence. Based both on recent events and some of what I’m hearing, I am fully fully expecting more offers to go out in that D.C./MD/VA area. They are talent rich states and the OU staff is looking to establish some connections out east much like they’ve done in the state of California.

It’s never going to be an area where you’re consistently getting five, six, or seven kids out of in a single recruiting class, but you establish enough of a presence in those areas that you set yourself up to have a legit chance with many of the top prospects. Cooks, Bill Bedenbaugh, and Lincoln Riley all have previous experience recruiting that part of the country so it’s certainly not as though the Sooners will be starting from scratch either.

If you looks at guys like Charles Tapper, or recent arrival Will Johnson, or soon to arrive Ricky DeBerry, the first building blocks are already there. It’s a smart move and one that could start to pay off in the very near future if the coaches play their cards right. – (Brandon)

– Tyler Brown: You may have seen some of my tweets from the weekend regarding OU bringing in a very ‘under the radar’ 2016 OK Preps offensive lineman in Tyler Brown (6’5″ 325 – Lexington OK). We spoke with him following the unofficial visit, and Brown spoke very highly of his time in Norman. In fact, he said there are already plans for a return visit this coming Friday at which point he expects to sit down with Bob Stoops. However on this most recent visit he spent most of his time with OL coach Bill Bedenbaugh, who Brown referred to as a ‘really cool and down to earth guy.’

Again, this is a kid that doesn’t seem to be getting nearly the attention he probably deserves. His feet alone on film for a kid his size are a solid indicator of just how much potential he possesses. An OU offer is definitely not out of the question if Bedenbaugh feels as though he has found a local diamond in the rough. – (Brandon)

– UPDATE (1:22 pm): 2016 WR Keith Corbin (6’2″ 175 – Beaumont, TX – VIDEO), first of what we expect to be several new names to emerge in the coming days/weeks now that the spring eval period has officially kicked off.

corbin

– UPDATE (2:33 pm): It would appear as though OU defensive end Matt Dimon has rejoined the team.

Any chance we can get JY’s opinion on Tyler Brown in comparison to the other OK Preps O-Lineman he did the write up on? Thanks for all of the hard work!

    • Defend Colfax says:

I’m sure it would be hard because his team looks horrible and all the competition is 5’10 180 and under. But the kid looks the part and does have nice feet. We’ll know more after the coaches get a better look. From what I can see he does have an offer from North Texas.

    Today’s Open Post was “Sick”

  • dallassooner says:

Sounds like we have tons of open offers out there. Just waiting on some commitments. Are any of the NEO guys Oklahoma HS kids? That would usually be a big help in swaying them if they grew up watching the Sooners.

  • Sooner 4Ever says:

OK, count me as a Tyler Brown fan… I watched his hudl video there and saw the first play where he pulled and pancaked a guy and thought, “yeah, the obligatory ‘first play/ best play’ pancake highlight.” Then I get to the 58 yard return on the Pick6. Then a few plays later I see him pulling from his right tackle spot and getting a pitch on a toss sweep play. The definitely has some feet and serious athleticism for a 6’6″ 325+ player. There’s a lot to work with there.

  • Defend Colfax says:

As much as I wish we’d give more Okie kids a chances I Love the East Coast offers. Shows that OUr staff will go anywhere to find talent. Boomer Sooner coast to coast!

  • hOUligan says:

Huh. Somehow, Sione ‘Hemi’ Lund managed to avoid being starstruck by the brilliance that is Stoolwater and left w/o committing.

  • Jason Vos says:

So if Austin Roberts is offered and commits, he will be able to join the team in July and count towards the 2015 class right?

  • Krys Allen says:

Anyone hearing anything about last weeks practices? Is spring practice over now, or is ther a few more left?

  • jmac45 says:

Who is the QB for Patrick Johnson’s team at Washington D C? Looks pretty good.

  • Drew says:

So, I’m not a big DB guy, but all the D.C./MD offers look really good to me. They’ve got decent size and speed to burn. Johnson looks like a total baller, but I’d take any of them.

  • KJ1123 says:

Ahhh spring football is over…..and football purgatory begins.

  • KJ1123 says:

Diggs film is impressive. He looks bigger than 165. Has a great nose for the ball.

  • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

    Hey, guys,

I think you all messed up on the last video. You accidentally posted a Faces of Death video of multiple people being run over by semi-trailer trucks.

    • jonnyBgood says:

D’Jasper Probincrux III would be proud of your post! I love the death metal music in the background while that monster is just crushing all those poor, undersized kids. Could you imagine being a 145 lb. DB seeing that behemoth heading your way with bad intentions?!?! Holy crap these kids are friggin huge nowadays. Funny post bro, needed that on this Monday.

  • Jeff says:

When will a recruit fall in love with OU and committ on the trip?

  • Randy says:

Any more on Kyle Mayberry seems to have some serious ball skills…

  • RocketCitySooner says:

Was Tyler Brown the “out of left field” visitor?

    • KJ1123 says:

I read that on a different site too. I wouldn’t want to play for them too. Im lying, I would.

    • SoonerinLondon says:

      Kid showing some smarts.

      • Boom says:

Cowboy fan or not, doesn’t seem like a smart thing to do. He’s not in position to call the shots IMO.

        • JB says:

I cannot stand Dallas, so on one hand, I think it’s funny. Then again, if he has another major screw-up left to make, it would be beautiful to see it happen as a Dallas player.

I’m torn about which way to root on that one. Either way, I’m sure Dez will probably do something stupid again.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

Great OP…Talent is talent, no matter where it hails from!

  • BoomerDave says:

This is the first time in many years that I can recall NEO having as many as 3 guys with OU-caliber talent. Can’t even think of the last player that we signed out of NEO. It’s good to see the state’s only JUCO program get back on top of the talent pool. This can only be a plus for the Sooners going forward.

    • hOUligan says:

I was thinking the same thing. Been so long it is really surprising to hear there are possibly 3 guys ‘OU good’. Was thinking Chandler would be the one guy that might get an offer due to depth need at CB but sounding like Roberts close to an offer from Reynolds.

    • JD says:

I think we got a guy named Tim Johnson a few years back…a DE…seems like there were two guys fromNEO that year but my mems kinda shady on that

  • Sooner Ray says:

Scratching my head a bit about Diggs as a DB and not receiver, looks good either way though. We should just sign Tyler Brown as fullback.

  • kokevo says:

In the tyler brown highlight it was hard not to notice number 4 on his team he looks like hes 3 feet tall but moves like a cat on crack.

  • OUhound says:

Geeeez is Diggs an athlete or what? I can see why we would recruit him as a DB. He sure goes to the ball.

  • Jordan Esco says:

    update added

  • Randy says:

I hope Sean McGrew is a new name we hear.. Maybe a long shot, but it seems like it doesn’t matter with the offers that have been going out lately..

  • soonerjunky says:

Nick DeLuca WR from Canada? 6′ 194lbs 4.49 40, 35.8 vertical. Any noise here?

  • Jordan Esco says:

update added – re: Matt Dimon

    • Jeremy Phillips says:

Do we know what the deal was? Grade issue, locker room or something else off the field..? Im under the impression it wasn’t a health issue…

      • Jordan Esco says:

Personal issue. Not really our, or anyone other than the kid to be honest, place to offer details, IMO.

    • hOUligan says:

Great news. Really feel like he is primed for a great season.

  • Daryl says:

Man I love the athleticism of Diggs. Great hands and great speed and that is a real need for our DBs

  • KJ1123 says:

I know it’s not May yet but have there been any new information or rumors about Shannon?

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

Dimon definately helps with the depth on the d line. He’s got a great motor.

  • Sooner Ray says:

Great news about Dimon, now get Shannon back on the field and things start to look better.

  • Jason Vos says:

I think Dimon would make one heck of a DT. I dont think DE is his spot

    • Jordan Esco says:

I think in a true four man front, he could easily slide back and forth between the two. In a 3-4, there’s no way he’s a DT (and I don’t think you were suggesting otherwise). But that’s JMO.

      • hemisooner says:

little on the small side for DT in 3 man front. Great motor just limited and will give Tapper a breather.

        • Jordan Esco says:

I think way more than a little on the small side for a NT, but yeah. Much more suited to be a true 4-3 DE, IMO.

          • Sooner 76 says:

I think they have Dimon as backup to Tapper at the 5-tech DE usually on the TE side of the D. Walker backed up by Orso at the 3-tech DT. I expect Gallimore could play either of those positions.

      • Randy says:

I would love to see Dimon, Walker (middle) and Tapper on some pass downs.. Would be hard to get on the field with the HUNH offenses though.

  • EasTex says:

Apparently it went unnoticed on Diggs video that he committed the unforgivable, he actually played off of a guy over ten yards as a DB. Horror of horrors!!!
    Then he intercepted the ball.

  • Ed Cotter says:

Oh man, great news about Dimon. I really like that kid and was bummed when he wasn’t with the team.

  • Jeremy Phillips says:

LR pretty good at the social media, i think they’re in Houston..

    @LincolnRiley: @OU_CoachJay & I getting it done today…hunting down the next great Sooner RB…ELITE COMPANY #WhosNext #OUDNA

  • Dustin says:

Looks like Lauren is gonna hit her record HR on the road. Too bad.

    • Sooner Ray says:

Yeah, but it would be sweet against stoolwater.

      • Dustin says:

It would be. I just wanted her to do it at home. Seems a bit sweeter to do it in front of the home fans.

        • Sooner Ray says:

I agree, I was on the edge of my seat for every at bat.

        • james babcock says:

Yeah but i am worried about Kelsey Stevens we need Shelby Pendley to be our number two pitcher if we are going to make it to Oklahoma City.

          • Dustin says:

That poor girl. She is having such a rough season. I just hope it’s not something serious off-the-field that’s affecting her concentration. In any event, she’s a tough girl. I’m sure she’ll bounce back eventually.

          • Sooner Ray says:

She had several really bad pitches but she threw just as many that the crowd and tv announcers thought were good. Her and the umpire just couldn’t come to an understanding.

          • Dustin says:

Well, I’m rooting for her. Hope she can right the ship. Her team is gonna need her in the postseason.

          • Sooner Ray says:

She hasn’t been right since the end of last season. Whatever it is, mental, physical, or emotional, I hope she gets it worked out soon.

          • Dustin says:

Me too, man. Good talkin’. I’m an hour ahead of ya and I got an early mornin’. Good night. Peace. BOOMER SOONER

  • JSam says:

Good gosh, Tyler Brown. He has an interception with a long run for a touchdown and they give him the ball on a sweep! All this for a mammoth O-Lineman? That kind of size and athleticism doesn’t happen every day. Count me in.

  • Sooner born, Sooner bred says:

I just want to say that ever since I found SoonersEtc. and then TFB I read you guys religiously everyday now. Amazing the amount of good information you guys put out continually and I for one couldn’t be happier I found this sight. I don’t exactly know how it works for you guys but y’all deserve a raise or something. With everything I’ve heard and seen, Sooners are gonna
    kick ass in 2015.
