2015 JUCO wide receiver Dede Westbrook was in Norman this past weekend and while it was believed he would take his remaining visits evidently things changed as he tweeted out the following Tuesday afternoon.
https://twitter.com/DshizzzNitssss/status/537291498862026752
He had previously told TFB that he would wait until December to announce his commitment. But in speaking with him today just after the news broke, the Sooners simply made too big of an impression on him over the weekend for him to wait any longer.
Westbrook becomes the 16th commitment for the Sooners in this 2015 class and the second wide receiver (John Humphrey being the other). He is also the second commitment OU has received coming out of last weekend’s visitors, with JUCO CB Will Johnson also committing a couple days ago.
Westbrook will join what is expected to be a crowded position group for the Sooners in 2015, but you don’t bring in junior college players if you’re not expecting them to compete for playing time right away. He has two years to play two and as the tweet indicates, he will also be an early enrollee and in Norman for spring ball.

Welcome news and welcome to the Sooner Nation! “Crowded” in the sense there are a lot of bodies but he has a chance to make an immediate impact by pushing those guys to move up or move out of the way.
Well said!
The Kiddie corp WRs need another year experience and Meade needs another 20 lbs…it might not look it judging from this year but I definitely believe theres still potential in that group. Cavil’s leaving tells me that he possibly saw young talent that would surpass him.

Great news! Will be interesting to see our game plan (and personnel) to throw to such a talented group of young receivers
His first step after the catch is unreal! Looks like he could help out in the punt return game too
…….ditto………find somebody to return punts, although it would certainly help if they would block for the returner!……..
To any of the brainiacs: comparing his record coming out of high school to his standing now, he seems to have matured dramatically over the past two years. What can you tell us about his recent history?
Not a lot unfortunately but we do want to have one of the fellas look at his film and maybe see how ut stacks up against his HS film
Wow that helps. WR might be our weakest group this year.
..the other part of the puzzle………..a qb to get the ball to them
I know TFB doesn’t like personal attacks…but why do you have to bring your negativity into a positive situation…honestly it’s uncalled for and downright disrespectful…yeah I get the whole you might be right concept…the fact of the matter is we brought in a really great receiver…ever stop to think that the reason Trevor Knight is not so successful is cuz we don’t have any really good receivers why do you think we’re going for jucos..my apologies to TFB but post like this are the reason I came here in the first place….to get away from it…I’m sure others will agree
relax mujambo……..seems like an over-the-top rx to a pretty benign comment on my part, but if you feel better now………my deepest apologies to your sensitivities………….read on with care
That’s the problem with people like you…your born on third base and go through life thinking you have hit a triple….it’s not my sensitivities. .it’s others…We have Hanson we’ve had Jones Bradford White. Two Heismans and a plethora of passing records I’ll trust our coaches before I trust you…
I agree. Some people will be negative about anything. Lol
Jrsy I know you’ve been here a while so has rph and he’s not the type that makes the rude comments. I think he’s just saying they need to figure out the qb position because it really isn’t just a Trevor knight issue. My hypothetical is that heupel can’t be the OC and the qb coach. So they need to bring in someone to handle the qbs directly.
careful, zack, you’re bordering on criticizing jh and that’s not allowed in ‘jersey’……..lol
I much prefer a coach who can best utilize the talented quarterbacks already on the roster.
Basically I agree with you but TK doesnt seem to have any problem at all hitting Sterling…..so maybe its the WRs more than the QB
TK doesn’t seem to have a problem at all hitting whichever receiver is his primary receiver on a particular play (except he tends to throw too high over the middle). Where TK is lacking as a QB is the ability to make a slow decision, to scan the field and find the open man. He’s already made up his mind where he’s going with the ball based on his pre-snap read.
This is GREAT against an aggressive defense (like Alabama), and you’ll torch them if you’re good enough at making those pre-snap reads. Where it will ABSOLUTELY KILL YOU is when a team only brings 3 guys who don’t break contain (WVU, KSU, Baylor) and plays coverage… then we lose.
I wouldn’t call Bama’s playcalling that aggressive. They don’t really pass rush all that much. They do play aggressive in their technique, though.
Well, what they lack in “aggression” they make up for in arrogance… Bama is going to run a lot of man coverage, and there will rarely be safety help over the top against a 4-wide set… You can read consistently pre-snap, and they don’t care because they think their guys are better than yours.
I agree which is why he throws so many picks ( and pick 6’s ) He locks on to his pre intended target…the LBs/ DBs read his eyes and game over.
NOT in any way criticizing TK, but who is Blinn’s QB? Guy can really fling it. Some of those throws were really long…and accurate. Anybody know his story and who is recruiting him?
I don’t see what was so negative about the comment, we do need better qb play. why be mad about someone’s opinion when it could’ve been way harsher
How many receivers will transfer after this year? Surely this is a sign…it’s too crowded!!
I don’t know that many will leave. Cavil already left but other than that I could only see Neal if he graduates this spring or kj young/Derrick woods. The kids from 2014 class will stick around at least another year or 2.
Yeah. Gotta give the first-year guys some time and Woods got hurt but guys like Smallwood and Bennett needed to step up.
Also if these receivers can’t get on the field and produce then it’s not like a bunch of big time schools are going to be dying to get them. They would end up at Sam Houston or some d2 school.
While this is true for the most part… there are transfers like Justin McCay who end up at a place like Kansas (I realize that’s not much better) that end up getting on the field and making some plays for their new university.
By the way I don’t remember Justin’s situation has far as how long he was with us, why he decided to leave, and I would assume he had to sat out a year.
I would not be surprised if Andrews transfers. Dude was promised to be a WR and we are switching him to a position we don’t even throw to.
I’ll still give that another year or so. Last I heard he’s back in the wr meetings.
good to hear. thanks for that.
Baylor offering says a lot to me. They’ve got an eye for WR talent.
Mildly surprised OU able to keep Dede out of Waco.
Earlier playing time perhaps….
Plus Baylor apparently runs their wr through the tackles like they’re perine. So I don’t think that will sell as much as they thought it would.
did not think of that, nice point
If you’ve ever been to Waco, it shouldn’t surprise you.
You think? 😉 Lol
Can we just have the Baylor WR coach, he’s been bringing in some serious talent the past couple years.
I hate to flame (sorry K!), but you have got to be kidding me! You want to replace Norvell????? Hello????
Most of our good receivers have been transfers (Saunders/Bester/Brown/Kenny) developing young WR hasn’t been his strongest area.
Kenny?
Cameron Kenney
Kenny Stills did not improve under Norvell. He was just as good when Broyles left as when he stepped on campus.
Cameron Kenny, I thought he was a JUCO or transfer, I may be mistaken. I’m not saying Norvell isn’t good, but Baylor is certainly beating us in development and talent.
You know, when I read this I thought to myself that Stephen must be high…especially given Norvell’s experience coaching in the NFL. But then if you go down the list of WRs that have been here, I can’t say I’ve seen drastic improvement in their abilities or route-running in his tenure. Some of them were so good there wasn’t much to improve upon..so maybe that’s why it seems that way. Who knows?
That said, he’s done a pretty good job of recruiting wide receivers to OU, so I’ll keep him.
Would OU still take one of the HS Wr?
Lodge
OU out with Newsome?
Certainly appears so.
dave……………….think that is why ou wound up with westbrook.
K
Don’t get me started. Would love the land Lodge. Any real shot at increasing the interest?
I’ve got to say this is great news now we just need to close the deal with turner and last weekend will be a complete success.
Other thing is this would indicate to me that newsome is going to choose a different school which I expected but also that there’s still 0-slim chance they go late after dahu.
Ima allow it.
Fast. Smooth. Seems to run effortlessly by people. He’ll fit in nicely with the rest of the trees at WR.
Now if JH can see the forest through the trees 🙂
YESSIR!! Welcome Mr. Westbrook
BOOM! Welcome young man…
I like what he brings to the table!
Nice receiver. Soft hands and he can shake and bake.
So what are the odds DGB plays 1 year?
In his interview… elsewhere.. he said of hanging out with DGB, “It was great man. He was a cool cat,” Westbrook said of Green-Beckham. “They’re starving for a championship and we’re about to get it.”
https://twitter.com/OU_CoachStoops/status/537306903429132288
Had to make a late addition to the post. My apologies for not including initially.
Lol
Can we get the QB throwing him the ball too?
Great vision. I think most of the time he’s setting defenders up.
Hopefully will have the same impact as Jalen Saunders
that would be awesome. Saunders was special for OU.
Not disappointed BUT I want LB’s I would say we need 2 LB’s at least in this class
Two? Hell, anything less than four this year will be a fail. Assuming we stick with the 3-4 that is.
We lose 4 senior lb’s plus Shannon. A minimum of 3 commits and 4 would be better.
Obviously a slot guy,so what do you with quick and young (i like him better outside than a slot)? We need one of the big WR to step up next year.
I’ve thought young is better out wide. I would have moved Neal inside and young outside. But instead quick jumped young and now young is the first backup wr.
At times heupel needs to take advantage of having all these wr and go 4 wide.
Great news, I really like Westbrook.
Now get E. Turner ( jc Safety), J. Barnett, N. Gallimore, G. Campbell, 3 or 4 linebackers (we lose 4 seniors and 5 total if Shannon leaves), J. Reid or K. Haughton, and maybe a qb for a total of around 25.
As always linebacker commits need to be ready to play.
shannon left
Some think he will be back. But the real question is whether he can come back.
may be out of date info, but the last I heard he was back in tx and not in school……..would need permission to come back and catch up on a ton of hrs missed to qualify……..he never waivered from his innocence and I would think he is thru with ou……..
That’s the same info I’ve heard as well and I don’t know if he would want to come back. I doubt boren wants him back. And I still think they reached on this situation anyways and made an example out of a kid who was caught in a bad situation.
Well and on twitter jordan quoted that jean delance 2016 OT committed too. I think they must be trying to confirm that because right now twitter is still buzzing for Westbrook.
Welcome, Dede. You avoided getting sucked into the mire seeping out of the ground in and around Lubbock. A wise man.
tOSU has signed the #1 and #7 OLB, and the #4 DE. I would guess that reduces the likelihood of DeBerry going there. Unless he stays in VA, we should have a good shot. Man, that would make my day … week … and month!
You mean they’ve committed? No one has signed yet…
Good point!
More good news: https://thefootballbrainiacs.com/ou-oklahoma-sooners-football-recruiting-2016-jean-delance-offensive-line
Guess with the JC receiver on board, that indicates Ryan Newsome is headed elsewhere. Also probably means a transfer or two or three at the receiver spot. They didn’t bring in westbrook to sit on the bench.
If his tweets are any indication, Newsome seems smitten with Ole Miss and Tenessee.
Agree.
I’m worried that this means DGB isn’t staying and they have worries with Bennett and Smallwood
I don’t think DGB is going anywhere. My understanding is that he committed to play at least 1 year, when we gave him the shot. I think you see him at wideout, Shep in the slot, and someone else at the other wide spot. Shep could go there and KJ or Quick in the slot, but I think the coaches want Shep back in his natural spot and are hoping to have someone else outside.
Look for a Mixon/Perine combination in the backfield, with Flowers blocking, and Mayfield or Thomas or TK (I don’t think he plays) or Miller (very doubtful longshot) at QB. Brown and Frison move into the tackle spots and we hope the line develops chemistry quickly.
Gonna be fun to watch.
I hope this comes to be the truth because it is what I am hoping for. DGB, Shepard and Todd as starters; Durron, Quick, Mead as backups. Mark Andrews should go to tight end and Derrick Woods will get the slot rotation also. Shake and Bake Mayfield at QB
Oline: Frison, Kasitati, Darlington, Alvarez, Brown
Semaje, Moxon, Ford, Ross
We showed we could probably use a four man backfield
According to his interview with Cassidy from rivals, Westbrook is under the impression that DGB will be here next year.
He gets open, has good hands, and makes people miss in the open field.
that QB also looks very good.
BOOM!!!
Westbrook’s film looks pretty good…. Welcome to SOONER Nation!
I like it. Load up with all the talent you can find, high school or JUCO, doesn’t bother me at all.
Sounds like DGB might be staying. That needs to be the selling point.
I’m one of the few that has always felt DGB was committed to play one year for us, really hope he does. I think we are just one big time outside, down field threat away from getting our slot receivers back into lighting up the field. The receiver position has so many options right now, there is no reason why we shouldn’t be terrorizing defenses.
I’ve thought he would too but we will have to see what happens over the next few months. I’m surprised he’s only rated the 5th best receiver if he were to enter the draft. He’s top ten on potential…with baggage may knock him down to the second round.
Hopefully he realizes that a good solid college season with no trouble could up his pay day by a large amount. I would love to have a private conversation with him and ask who he would want to be his QB next year out of the choices he currently has.
Jay Norvell has been and continues to be a great recruiter and developer. Whether it’s a JUCO guy or High school player, they still need development and training in our team so to say he doesn’t develop, just because our passing game has been bad this year and we all have to point the finger somewhere, is ridiculous! We have had countless of great receivers and dropped passes can’t be coached. We aren’t much of an air raid offense so what has he focused on developing? Our down the field blocking. Just have some faith in the coaches who show consistency
Losing out on Newsome after a year of hard work and several visits to campus must sting the staff and it will have long term repercussions on the field. Newsome offered the ‘home run’ threat OU has lacked for years. Don’t get the sense Westbrook offers the same talent as Newsome or the explosiveness OU really needs. A pretty good indicator of where OU is as a national power when losing teams like Tennessee can snag a longtime OU target. It also says volumes about how recruits feel about OU & the Little 12-2 conference.
I saw on another site the name KJ Hill refresh my memory where is he from and what position does he play ?
Ok, first. Will Ford and/or Ross transfer with the way Perine is playing and Mixon playing next year.
If they stay and with Shepherd, Green, and Westbrook as receivers, should the coach’s look at going to an option offense. There hasn’t been this much potential talent in Norman for a long time.
