OU Football Practice Notes 8.10.15

Image via OU Football Facebook

Received a few notes from the past few days of practice that I wanted to share with all of you.

– I asked a source about how Joe Mixon and Samaje Perine compared now that both are actually sharing the same field, and thought the response I got was excellent. The source said, “Perine…you can’t stop and Mixon…you can’t touch.” My source further added that Perine may be stronger than Mixon and harder to bring down, but Mixon is more elusive. Which led me to tweet the following this past Friday:

– Was told that the offensive line looks “damn good, but with so much rotation right now it’s hard to nail down one person at any position who really stands out.”

– I know I mentioned last week that one of our sources spoke highly about Perine, Mixon & Dede Westbrook looking like possibly the most dangerous weapons on the team in one particular practice. Which may have come as a bit of a surprise given one Sterling Shepard’s standing within this OU offense. Well, as you might expect we’ve been told Shepard has stood out in recent practices looking every bit the playmaker you’ve all come to expect.

None of which is a surprise to be sure, but following that groin injury that limited him the latter half of the season it’s certainly never a bad thing to hear about Shepard showing out in practices.

– Was told that Jordan Wade appears to have overtaken Mathew Romar as the starting nose guard, for now. Both are rotating in-and-out, but I’m told Wade is getting more reps and is currently running with the 1’s.

– I have again been told the defense is primarily running their nickel package — which very may well wind up being their base defense — with Steven Parker continuing to impress at nickel. Will Johnson is the 2nd team nickel and I’m told that while Parker has the advantage at the moment, there isn’t a huge drop off between the two. So it’s clear the coaches are developing depth at the position.

– After talking to a few people, I get the sense the 2nd team secondary looks something like this: Stanvon Taylor and PJ Mbanasor at CB, Kahlil Haughton at SS & Prentice McKinney at FS.

– Also told that Ricky DeBerry is starting to get some 2nd team reps (Eric Striker & Devante Bond are sharing first team reps) at the stand up DE/OLB spot. If you didn’t see it on Twitter over the weekend, we also heard DeBerry had a ‘pick six’ during one practice. One source said, “he’s doing things Striker couldn’t do when he (Striker) was a freshman.”

– Was told the practices continue to be very intense. Apparently a couple of players got into it a little bit and had to be separated at one point during a weekend practice. Was given the indication that it was because of how hard one of the players was blocking the other. Again, sounded like it was triggered by the intensity of the competition.

– Related to the point above, I’m told that overall there is a lot more player rotation taking place than there has been in years past. There is clearly a renewed desire to develop legitimate depth on both sides of the ball.

– Was told that Jordan Evans continues to be a staple of the first team defense and has snagged multiple INTs during practices.

– Was told that true freshmen Neville Gallimore and Marquise Overton are taking reps at the 1-tech behind Wade and Romar. Have been told that both have looked really good so far. Gallimore is a powerful guy with exceptional quickness for a kid his size and good hand usage. Because of his ability to play both the pass and run, he seems to have a bit of an edge over Overton right now.

But I’m told that Overton is QUICK (a source said he might even be quicker than Gallimore) and can appear unblockable at times on passing downs. Sounds like both of those young guys are doing well, but at the same time it’s hard to imagine them unseating experienced guys like Wade and Romar.

– I was told that are a lot of offensive personnel groupings being utilized thus far. 4 WR sets, 2 back sets, 3 WR and 1 TE, etc.

– I also asked a source to compare Jeffrey Mead and Dallis Todd, who are frequently running with the 2’s at outside WR. Was told that Todd is probably more complete as a route runner and has a more developed route tree, but Mead is a bigger deep threat.

– Sounds like Dahu Green and AD Miller continue to do well. Was told Green had a big catch up in the middle field against the first team defense. Bob Stoops also once again singled both Green and Miller for their play in practices during his fall camp presser on Saturday.

– Overall, I’m told there is a lot of distribution at the WR position. It isn’t just one or two guys like you saw last year, the ball is being spread around quite a bit in this new offense.

    too slow

    Thanks for the updates!

    Thanks guys!

  • Brad Warren says:

Excellent information. Thanks K. I am sooooooo excited to see what we can do this season. I really like the cerebral style that Coach Diron Reynolds utilizes. Obviously time will tell, but imo just an excellent hire. Tapper seems to already have a completely different mindset as a result of the limited time he’s worked with Reynolds.

    • rphokc says:

?…….second time I’ve seen ref to the cerebral style………what does that mean …..thxs

      • BoomerDave says:

I take it to mean he’s more laid back, not so”in your face” style of coaching. He got that from working with pros in the NFL., I would suppose.

      • Bob Edwards says:

My impression was that Monty was more of a rah, rah guy; great at recruiting, great at motivation, possibly not as good at teaching. What I have heard of Reynolds is that he is more of a low key teacher type. He’s not going to get you ready by pumping you up emotionally but by making sure you get all the details right and that you are ready to play.

      • Brad Warren says:

Coach Mike had mentioned he coached in a very cerebral manner. Reynolds had told the guys they were much better athletes than what he had at Stanford, yet they’re D was ranked top 5. He stresses importance of making intelligent decisions. Studying being prepared. This was all on here a day or so ago.

        • hOUligan says:

We’ve heard this since the hire; that he’s very intelligent and a great teacher who gets into the details. Waiting to see ‘on the field’.

      • DCinAZ says:

Means he’s used to coaching smart players and doesn’t need to yell.

  • Jeremy Phillips says:

I know Debbie Downer.. but with all these linebacker picks, sounds like our QB’s still don’t see the middle of the field well..

    • Jordan Esco says:

It’s always a give and take w/ this type of stuff when you’re facing your own teammates. Can’t read too much into either side, IMO.

      • Jeremy Phillips says:

Somebody was gonna say it.. Figured i would beat Stephen Dale to the punch…

      • SamSooner says:

Jordan, what would be your preference as to how much of the playbook they reveal to start the season. They’ve usually held back until they face top tier competition.

        What is your preference?

        • Jordan Esco says:

Honestly, I’ve never really cared about any of that. Run what you want to run and force the other team to stop you. Why go in worrying about something like that?

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

You see a play enough times on defense in practice and you know exactly where it’s going 99% of the time.

    • Brad Warren says:

Admitting you are Debbie Downer is the first step in recovery. Perhaps there is hope for you. But as Jordan stated, as much as these guys go against one another, news of one side having success means little.

    • Bob Edwards says:

Yeah, that fifth string walk-on freshman QB may not get a scholly if he keeps throwing like that.

    • Rick says:

As a defensive player, seeing the offense work on plays repetetively, one tends to cheat to the play to bust it up, to get noticed, to boost the confidence. Pick 6’s last year were the result of coaches not being on the same page, rushing the signal in to the QB with too little time and expecting the QB to process, read and react to the situation with too few moments to achieve the directive. I think this case is more of “I have seen this play before, and I am going to bust it up”.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

Thanks gentleman. I can’t help but feel as though this new found intensity was the missing ingredient the last few years.

  • Sooner Redzone says:

Yesterday Mixon took a handoff and went 80 yards and nobody was really within 20 yards after he broke it. Also Nila is working some at RT. Shep caught a long touchdown pass. I hear the QB’s all look better.

  • disqus_MGlT3IoZ53 says:

Great report – thanks! Still starving for QB news though! I know it will be hard to report on that this early

  • OUWade says:

man, this post was an awesome early morning present. Thanks guys

  • Raymond Chambers says:

Where do I sign up for my prescription to TFB. All this useful information couldn’t possibly be free. THANK YOU GUYS FOR WHAT YOU ARE DOING…..

  • Oscar says:

Very hard to not be excited about the season with reports like these!

  • j l says:

    TFB. Best value…ever.

Thanks for all you do guys

  • Randy says:

    Love the updates… !!

Can we find out how the offense looks inside the 10 or at least reds one offense. We know these offenses move the ball from 20 to the 20, but we need TD’s when we have that chance..

Also, I will say it again (at least 10th time) Jordan Evans will be a All American his year. Side note : we need Steven Parker to be a All American.

  • Hustle Town USA 713 says:

Love this site. Checking it out before I even get any work started. Boomer

  • Ed Cotter says:

Great report. Thanks for getting it out so early.

  • SoonerSouthoftheRed says:

Haven’t heard much about Quick this summer.

  • JY says:

Hoping that we spread the ball around like we did when Coach Stoops first took over. People who weren’t marquee names, became big names once they started making plays. I’m really hoping we have a guy in Coach Riley who knows how to use all of the tools in the shed.

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

a different guy steps each week, like way back when it was Q, then Savage, then Fagan, then Norman etc would be awesome and would keep defenses from focusing as much on Perine and Shepard

      • JY says:

You’ve got legitimate game changers in Mixon, Perine, Humphreys, Westbrook, Quick, Shepard etc, who can take it the distance at any moment. I dare call it talent, but from a pure physical ability standpoint it’s an embarassment of riches.
        Two Questions:
        1. Can we have a qb who can get the ball to the playmakers consistently and prevent turnovers?
        2. Can our offensive line keep our QB upright and open the holes for our stable of backs to storm through?

        • Soonerfandave84 says:

I’m with you on that…OU needs to dial back the turnovers and force a few more…The OL is my real worry for this year. A patchwork OL destroyed the ’09 season

          • JY says:

Bedenbaugh is a true savant at his craft. He has more young talent and depth than any point in the Stoops tenure in my opinion, albeit unproven talent. Good news is that instead of in 09 when Trent was basically your only returnee, now you have a veteran Center in Darlington, Nila can play either of the two guard spots, and Farniok has been around a long time and can play well. So you have some steadiness there with trying to find only another tackle and guard.

Coach B, truly understands how to build a unit that can perform at a high level year in and year out. That’s a big departure from the Patton era. Go over to soonersports.com and check out the names of the oline, there is legitimate talent and depth at every year in the program. I think they’ll be fine, but we have to perform.

          • Soonerfandave84 says:

I just want to see it live, but I know they have lots of guys who can play

          • JY says:

            Yeah me too hoss.

          • rphokc says:

jy……good to see you back on here more often……..before game one, are you going to give your impressions of the oline when the starters are set, or, are you going to delay comments til after the game is played………thxs

          • JY says:

Since we don’t have access, I’ll probably have to see after the first game. I’ll probably get something together for a preview before long, but my preliminary thoughts say that it’ll be…
            LT St. John
            LG Nila
            C Darlington
            RG Danley
            RT Farniok

I’d look for Frison, Mittermeier & Alvarez to provide immediate depth and I’d look for Frison to probably push for more time later in the year. That freshman and 2nd year freshman class is stocked. I can’t wait until the Cody Ford’s of the world are in there.

          • rphokc says:

well, won’t be frison……….thxs for responding

          • Sooner 76 says:

LT – Josiah St. John 55 (RS Sr)
            Orlando Brown 78 (RS Fr)
            Quinn Mittermeier 69 (Soph)
            Christian Daimler 70 (RS So)
            Bobby Evans 71 (Fr)

LG – Jamal Danley 52 (Jr)
            Cody Ford 74 (Fr)

OC – Ty Darlington 56 (Sr)
            Jonathan Alvarez 68 (Soph)
            Dominique Hearne 79 (Fr)
Erick Wren 58 (RS Soph) WO

RG – Nila Kasitati 54 (RS Sr)
            Alex Dalton 63 (RS Fr)
            Dru Samia 75 (Fr)

RT – Derek Farniok 72 (RS Sr)
            Kenyon Frison 73 (RS Fr)
            Sam Grant 76 (RS Jr)
            Joseph Paul 77 (RS Fr)

Not sure where Samia and Paul are playing.

          • JY says:

Yes sir, that’s some legitimate Depth. In years past, the young guys would be thrust in before they’re ready, but you’ve got three seasoned Vets, Danley, St. John and Mittermeier. I’m particularly curious to see how St. John’s progressed. Athleticism has always been there, just needed to focus on some technique.

          • soonermusic says:

your comments on the o-line are highly encouraging as that , imho, will be the main key to whether the offensive plan is successful or not.

          • Clint Lenard says:

            09? The entire team was a patchwork…

        • soonermusic says:

If the answer to number 2 is yes, then I have no doubt that the answer to number 1 will be yes, also. I don’t think you can overstate how much improvement will occur with the addition of even just one more excellent receiver, and it looks like we’ll have more than that. Imho, qb confidence, consistency, execution, decision making, etc. will all look much, much better if receivers are consistently open, where they are expected to be, and are making plays–no matter who the qb turns out to be.

      • Sooner 76 says:

IIRC, when the coaches first go to OU, at the first workout, one of them told Fagan that he was so stiff, he would never play a down at OU.

The biggest bunch of no-names on that 2000 team was the DL. And they got the job done by committee, with 10 players rotating into the games. They were very effective. It helps when you have 2 great LBers and one of the best ever secondaries.

    • hOUligan says:

Hey JY! Been wondering when you would show up. The best thing I took out of these notes is that ‘the oline looks damn good’. And that’s always the key ingredient. Riley will find a qb, but that line has to come together.

    • Steve Cooke says:

      Who are you?? ???

    • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

Your presence makes me smile. I mean, really smile. Cheshire cat-like. I stare past your avatar, and I see film breakdowns. Lengthy, glorious, fatty film breakdowns.

  • cdzendolet says:

I can’t help but feel boundless optimism for the season around this time each year. We have seemingly endless amounts of weapons on both sides of the ball, but what we lacked last year was sufficient coaching to gel it all together. I hope the changes Bob made to the program fix that, and they get back to playing Oklahoma ball the way it is supposed to be played. Boomer Sooner!

    • soonerthunder says:

I’m w/you! Every time this time of year the team and coaches and fans all say that it’s “different” this year, better than in past years. I get that. Every team in the U.S. is optimistic this time of year, but I still can’t help feel good about this team this year.

I think we have at least 5 dynamite O weapons: Perine, Ross (don’t forget this guy), Mixon, Shepherd, Westbrooke. And I like Flowers, and what I hear about several others plus the SYSTEM.

On D I see significant improvement, depth, and the SYSTEM. I like the changes on both O and D. I’m pretty optimistic about this year and we really need to beat both UTs.

  • bjwalker82 says:

I feel like I’m always coming on here with something negative. Just wanted to ask if people had seen Landry last night? Cauuuse he’s apparently going to be released.

    • Daryl says:

where did you read he is getting released? I didn’t watch the whole game but I watched enough to see 2 TD’s dropped and 1 drop that led to an Int. So form the what I watched he was on target and seemed comfortable, confident and showed that arm strength. Not saying he was really good but he looked like a backup QB to me.

      • bjwalker82 says:

There was some local beat reporter who said he was a likely release candidate because they have Tahj Boyd. Anyway I don’t think he had an int. He looked better than he has.

        • Daryl says:

I saw the interception. He hit his TE in the chest and bounced off and straight to the hand of a LB. The same TE also dropped a sure TD pass off of his chest on 4th down. I agree he looked much better than last year.

I could see them releasing him only because I didn’t see a starting QB in him and Boyd could probably have a cheaper contract as backup.

          • bjwalker82 says:

Yeah, I mean he did throw 32 times. So It’s not like he didn’t have his chances.

          • SamSooner says:

He was in with the 3rd team linemen. They couldn’t block a toddler. No one can perform under those circumstances.

        • Jed says:

To me, the key ‘development’ play was when he took off and got a needed first down. Took two hits and kept on chugging. Old Landry would have gone fetal before the first hit or would have simply taken a knee when no passing options were open.

      • Rick says:

I saw it the same way, he was throwing to rookies and 2-3 stringers who dropped passes. I actually thought for the situation he was put in, he did very well. He wound up 50%, with severeral drops.

    • Wild Will says:

I thought he threw some nice balls for a chance at a go ahead TD, but they were all dropped. However, he did not play well in the second half. Maybe without the dropped balls you would’ve seen a more confident Jones in the second half, but we’ll never know. If released, I hope he gets picked up by another team.

    • Walter Sobcek says:

LJ did suffer some terrible receiver drops, especially from the rookie Gardner, who dropped a TD pass, and then later let a nice pass bounce of his chest for an INT. Overall, LJ did OK, but experienced the same issues he had at OU: no awareness of the play clock, and when pressured gets jittery feet and throws off target. I think he’s on the bubble, and not certain last night was good enough.

  • Sooner Redzone says:

Courtney Garrett back practicing this morning

  • Cole says:

Watching snapchat for practice is just getting me more excited. I think Todd will significant playing time this year. I just keep thinking of when he manhandled one the db’s at the spring game. Kinda hoping for a Kenny stills 2.0 type of kid.

  • PLAW0720 says:

The brainiacs are on FIRE! Great job, fellas!

  • SoonerfanTU says:

lol, I always find it a tough line to walk when you hear the good and bad from the OU offense going against the OU defense.

I read that Mixon breaks an 80 yard run with nobody near him, and I get excited until I realize that means our D completely broke down. Then I read that Evans is intercepting passes in practices, and I’m like that greats, but wait, who is throwing all of these picks.

Sounds like we definitely have some playmakers on both sides of the football.

    • Bob Edwards says:

I think the best view to take is that, when you hear these things, you don’t know exactly what was going on. Was Mixon playing against the 1’s? The 2’s? The 3’s? Was the int thrown by TK or the walk-on that just got on campus last week? What was being practiced? A new scheme? A different group of players? What?

It could all be good or all be bad. It’s likely somewhere in between. How you view it tells more about you than what’s going on. There is really not enough information to know for sure. We will have weakness as will everyone else. We will have to wait until the season to see what really happens.

One thing I do is try to follow the stories. Pick some players that you like and see how they are doing. You can have great stories even on bad teams. That was true even during the Blake years. It won’t make a really bad year great, but it will let you see that there are some good things happening even when times are bad.

      • Daryl says:

I think another way to look at it is that the offense and defense are both having success. For me I actually get more nervous when I hear the offense or the defense is dominating all the time.

        • Bob Edwards says:

That’s OK under Stoops since he will run 1’s against 1’s. Under Blake they always ran the 1’s against the 2’s. The 1’s always had success in practice. Not so much in games.

          • DrewChubbs says:

I would tend to be more excited about the reports of competitiveness and intensity than several big plays (though I am excited about those too), for the reasons you mentioned. Also, I know that in the recent past, just going through the motions has been an issue. We all witnessed some of that last year, and it wasn’t pretty. The fact that they are gettin’ after it really, really has me perking up for this season more than any season in a good while.

    • Fear The Magic says:

I know what you’re saying but I tend to be a glass half full kind of guy so when I picture Evans making the interception I think that it was a very good pass but Evans just made a spectacular play on it. Or if Mixon runs for 80 yards untouched I just think, well hes just THAT GOOD. I’m very aware that Im probably fooling myself but it tends to keep my blood pressure down.

    • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

I think we kinda want to hear the offense and defense making plays. If we heard that the offense was lighting it up, but no big plays from the defense, then what would we think? What about the other way around?

If both sides are making plays, then that could be a good thing. It might be a bad thing, too.

  • BigJoeBrown says:

This is just unbelieveable. Because of TFB there will be no “case of the Monday’s”. Crazy to think how big of impact these freshman are having, mixed in with the leadership and the experiene of the elders. Plus the most important thing to me is we are starting to see development. What a great combination, I am starting to think we will be in for a nice surprise this season. A really nice surprise.

  • Christian Taylor says:

I hate to be the guy that reads all this great info and still wants more. But I am human so I will anyway. I was curios who are the receivers working with the 1s and any news on qbs such who is throwing more picks or what the rotation looks like. Thanks

    • Super K says:

I’ll try to write something up on that this week

    • Sooner 76 says:

Neal, Westbrook, and Shepard would be the first team receivers. I think the plan is to move Shepard and Dede around b/t inside and outside to make the opposition’s coverage more difficult.

  • jmac says:

Really appreciate the info K. Thanks for all you do. 🙂

  • rainydaze114 says:

I’m still kinda curious as to how Flowers is going to be used. Haven’t heard too much about him really. Free the Tree!!

  • Cincysooner says:

Hey SuperK, has your sources been able to agree with what Dede Westbrook has been saying about Jarvis Baxter? In which, Dede is saying that Jarvis is as good as him or better.

    • Drew says:

I haven’t seen that myself, but I would probably chalk it up to a mix of humility and trying to build up the guy he vouched for. So, I have no doubt Baxter is good, but I think it’s probably safe to say that Dede was exaggerating a bit.

  • BoomSoon says:

So did anyone ever verify who is throwing the picks in practice? I thought I read where the Pick 6 was not Knight but clarification would be great.

  • Onikuno says:

Great stuff. But there’s one group we all want to know about….QBs? Too early to say?

    • MrBigsby says:

Read between the lines…..Deberry Pick 6, Jordan Evans with numerous INTs.

      • SoonerOracle737 says:

I was thinking same thing. Who’s tossing all the INT’s?

      • BigJoeBrown says:

IMO…I wouldn’t look to much into it. The offense is still learning the system and routes. I imagine Reily knows they can run, judging from last year. But passing/routes/catching, perhaps could be a different story. So they are passing at 80% of the time. So interceptions are going to happen, when you pass so much. IMO….

      • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

Why did the INTs happen? Bad route? Bad throw? Receiver should have caught the ball, but tipped it to the defense? Arm punt?

    • Jordan Esco says:

Just talked w/ K, he has some info. Look for it in a post later this week I’d expect.

      • BigJoeBrown says:

I am curious about QB development. What are some of the changes that the QB’s have experience this year compared to last year, wheter it be drills, footwork, reading, ect…difference between Huepel and Reily.

  • rphokc says:

    sk……..hearing anything about walker?……..thxs

  • KatyOUdad says:

Curious how Matt Dimon is doing. Is he still running with the 2’s or has the competition passed him? Thanks.

    • hOUligan says:

True his name has not come up. He’s one of my favorites. Maybe not as talented as some but plays hard.

    • Fear The Magic says:

Saw this quote if it helps.

@CareyWWLS: One thing I heard today that Bob Stoops didn’t mention is that Matt Dimon is back tearing stuff up in practice.

  • Indy_sooner says:

I can’t recall a higher anticipation for Football, and players like this year. New coaches, new players, new attitude. I like it!
I read that for the first time in probably forever, there was a much longer line for RBs than QBs during the “Meet the Sooners” day this weekend.

  • Corey Muller says:

Go on a week and a half long Field Training Exercise and all I wanna do when I get back is log onto TFB and see what has been going down since I went off the grid. Good to hear our boys are feeling the fire in practice again. Boomer Sooner everyone, get pumped!

  • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

Good to see Gallimore is enjoying his first Okie August. For now…

  • John McCroskey says:

“Will Johnson is the 2nd team nickel and I’m told that while Parker has the advantage at the moment, there isn’t a huge drop off between the two. So it’s clear the coaches are developing depth at the position.”

    THEN PUT PARKER AT SAFETY!!

  • Sooner Redzone says:

My reports from practice today is Mixon is the best player on the field. He is a phenom. Knight looked better than Baker today. Mixon took two the distance. Shepherd caught a long one. Ross had a big run. Mixon went right up the middle and was gone.

    • Fear The Magic says:

You just know Mixon is chomping at the bit to get out and do his thing in front of 85,000 fans. Im already thinking when he makes his first appeance the crowd is going to erupt.

    • cdzendolet says:

my excitement for this season is only going to build one practice report at a time

    • wynwilliams64 says:

So are you hearing that it truly is a two horse race for QB or does CT still have a chance?

      • Sooner Redzone says:

I think that the QB race is ongoing. I keep hearing Baker is more accurate but Trevor more dynamic. I personally think that if we can get Trevor to excel in this offense with the quick reads and with so much concentration and focus required on Mixon and Perine that if they choose to run him he can go from here to Yellowstone without being touched. Trevor don’t forget had the fastest 40 for QB’s and RB’s except for only Ross and Ford in winter testing. Mixon was not timed I think because of his probation. Knight is really a blaze as well. So he outran Rodney and Brooks. I just think the Air Raid is going to open the run game for stupid ridiculous long runs. Now can we run it when we have to? But if they do have to pay attention to the zone read in the redzone I think Knight if he does not start should play in the redzone.

        • Sooner 76 says:

Trevor has the best physical tools. He just has to master the mental aspects, especially the reads. Plus he has to stay healthy. If Trevor starts, I hope they run some true zone read, b/c that would drive Ds insane.

    • pitbull17 says:

If Mixon is half on the field what he is in practice he’ll be somthing special. If he’s all he’s cracked up to be he’ll be amazing. And with Perinne already a proven beast this backfield could give DC’s nightmares.

  • soonermusic says:

I have to join the chorus: These practice reports are KILLER…thanks.

  • Sooner Redzone says:

Mixon just takes it to the house. I was told either we have an awful defense or he is truly a superstar.

    • soonermusic says:

Is the answer to that something that coaches can determine, either from what they see or from practice film, or does everyone just have to hope for the best until game time?

      • Bob Edwards says:

The coaches know. They will know what was called, who was supposed to do what, and whether everyone did what they were supposed to do. Sometime everyone does the right thing and the other guy just makes a great play. Other times it is a bust on the defender’s part. The coaches will know. We probably won’t.

      • Cush Creekmont says:

Usually. Until after the USC game in 1971, there was some concern about the defense because Greg Pruitt killed the D in practice, but he it was him and Mildren’s late pitches.

    • BleedCrimson says:

      Superstar!

  • DCinAZ says:

“Was told that Jordan Evans continues to be a staple of the first team defense and has snagged multiple INTs during practices.”

LBers snagging multiple INTs. This sounds like the same problems we had last year on offense.

“I was told that are a lot of offensive personnel groupings being utilized thus far. 4 WR sets, 2 back sets, 3 WR and 1 TE, etc.”

This doesn’t surprise me at all. I posted on LT over the weekend that I think Riley, if anything, has a TON of weapons on this offense to use and they could be just too much to stop. All the formations would seem to suggest he’s finding ways to use all of them.

  • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

That giddy feeling when you are starting to fall in love. That’s what this place does to me. I hope you’re happy, TFB.

  • h-townsooner says:

No talk of mark andrews lately. That kid stoll showing out?

  • Daryl says:

The pictures and videos of Mixon on Twitter have him looking Swoll!!! I didn’t remeber him looking that size. Could be special.

  • Sooner Redzone says:

The bad news is both my sources are concerned about the OL. Not about Coach B but it is just the reality of the inexperience.

    • Fear The Magic says:

Akron doesnt worry me. Tenn in week two does. If we can come out of there with a win I think our OL will be improving every week and it’ll be fine.

      • Bob Edwards says:

I see us throwing lots of quick hitting plays early on to take some pressure off the O-Line. Can we make that work against Tenn? This may be one of those struggle early teams, become a juggernaut late. The question will be can we win games while the offense has the chance to gel.

        • Fear The Magic says:

I think thats exactly what we’ll do.
The problem here is that OUs weak (inexperienced) position OL is going against Tennessees strongest position the DL. Also playing in a hostile environment of 90,000+ crazed fans will probably enter into the equation as well.
Their DL will be boring in on whoever our QB is from the start. Hence short passes would be the way to go.

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

Hopefully our running game will take the pressure off of both the OL and QB if we can get just enough blocks on the edges to spring the big runs by Mixon/Perine & Company.

          • SoonerfanTU says:

I think we’ll go run and short pass heavy to start that game. Adjust from there. Might see some end arounds, reverses, bubble screens, stuff like that. Try to get some confidence, and hopefully a lead, and go from there.

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

I forsee a lot of swing passes to Mixon to get him in open space. Just a hunch.

          • Bob Edwards says:

I can definitely see the bubble screens. I would think the ends arounds and reverses would tend to get blown up by the DE’s getting penetration against the inexperienced OT’s.

          • Bob Edwards says:

I think we will have to get creative to get guys on the edge. That’s where the OL is the weakest. We are replacing both OT’s. I would see more draws and shovel passes. Try to take advantage of our experience in the middle of the OL.

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

Swing passes to Mixon out in open space?

          • Bob Edwards says:

It would have to be something like that. I don’t see us running a lot of sweeps until we get some experience with the OT’s.

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

I certainly don’t know a lot about OL blocking, etc. but I think this new offense is designed to spread out the defense and naturally opens space with defenders. Plus, there is an emphasis on getting rid of the ball quickly which neutralizes the pass rush and specifically the DL. Am I thinking correctly here? Pass rushing Taco Tech type offense is almost impossible and frustrated me for many years. Can’t we expect to have the same type of results? I know OT’s are wet behind the ears but if the ball is out of backfield in less than 2 seconds we should be good, no?

          • Bob Edwards says:

No you have the right idea. You want quick plays, quick handoffs, short passes, etc. Or you want ones that take advantage of overly aggressive penetration like screens and shovel passes. What you want to avoid are the slow developing plays like sweeps and long passes.

End around and reverses like you mentioned below tend to be slow developing and get blown up by penetration by the DE’s. You probably want to avoid them. However, that is a general trend. You may run some in specific cases because of what the D is doing. For instance if the DE keeps crashing hard on your run up the middle you may run an end around to force him to stay deep. You may not get a lot from the play itself but you at least make him hesitate.

That is how the zone read is supposed to work. If the DE goes for the RB every time the QB takes the ball and runs into the hole he’s left. The problem was last year we never really had the QB keep the ball so the defenses just ignored it.

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

I’m hoping Flowers does his best blocking on the edges.

          • Cush Creekmont says:

Yes. Shovel pass and even draws after a quick slant fake. The “double screen” (fake one side come back to the other) and the bubble screen to Mixon in the slot after a fake to Optimus.

          • Fear The Magic says:

short passes, runs up the middle to begin with. At that point their DBs will be pressing our WRs so we hit them with a play action. 60 yards TD Westbrook.

          • Eric Hoffpauir says:

I’d love to see us keep up the pace. With any success early, those TN DL’s will be sucking air.

The picture (top of the page) above of Mayfield looks like:
“No Cody, Coach Riley called for the “starting QB”- you’re throwing over there with the #2’s”.

  • Jason Vos says:

So who are the 2 starting outside receivers?

  • Stephen Dale says:

  • Matt says:

I just heard Toby Rowland talk about the spring game and
he mentioned that Sanchez lined up on Andrews multiple times. That sounds to me
that they actually are moving corners around and not just playing Left and
Right, is that correct? He also said that Sanchez did a really good job against
him which is encouraging to see Sanchez do well against a physical receiver.

  • Hotrod33 says:

The part I was impressed with is they are having intense practices to the point that they have to be separated. That tells me that they want to play and stay on the field. I will hold my excitement though until we can see them in live action.

  • Jeff says:

Any news about the QB play??

  • OceanDescender says:

Really good to hear Jordan wade taking that nose spot back, he flashed a lot of disruptive capability in 2013 and it teaches young guys that hard work will get you your spot back. Love it.
