Fall Camp | Team Notes: As you’re surely aware by now, the Sooners began fall camp early Thursday morning and are already back at it again today (Friday). As promised, TFB managed to round up a few notes from the first practice to pass along to our loyal readers. Keep in mind, however, that the team isn’t in pads yet. Having said that, though, they certainly aren’t playing patty cake out there either.

So while it’s certainly necessary to take some of what we share with the requisite grain of salt, it’s also not as though there is literally nothing to be gleaned (as some might have you believe) from this type of practice info. But enough with the appe-teasers, let’s get to the main course.

Neville Gallimore: Yesterday I tweeted out…

And I did so after being told that redshirt freshman DT Neville Gallimore was straight bullying people yesterday, which included a first team OL. “Neville looked really improved from last year,” one source told TFB. This corroborates what I’d be hearing all summer, specifically that Gallimore had put in a lot of work over the summer and has considerably improved upon both his build and conditioning.

You may recall that when Gallimore arrived from Canada last year, the OU workouts were, needless to say, a bit of a shock to him in terms of how taxing and difficult they are.

So the positive early report is certainly welcome news for a guy in Gallimore that OU is looking for big things from in 2016. And it’s not just Gallimore, but really all of the talented younger guys, of which the Sooners have several, who will be asked to step up this year. Because having another difference-maker to go along with Charles Walker may not be a glaring need necessarily, but it can only help this team — and the rest of the defense behind them — with respect to their playoff aspirations.

Freshmen Cornerbacks: I also asked about the freshmen cornerbacks and was told Parnell Motley and Parrish Cobb took reps with the third team. The person TFB spoke to said Motley looked ‘more ready’ than Cobb on this particular day, but as you all know Cobb only recently arrived in Norman. However this same source also said in terms of the actual number of reps, Cobb probably received ‘a few more’ than Motley.

Apparently Jordan Parker did not go on Thursday, but we were not given a specific reason as to why.

Receivers: Was told that to begin camp the starters are Dede Westbrook, Jarvis Baxter, Mark Andrews & Jeffrey Mead. It’s probably fair to assume at this point that Westbrook, Baxter and Andrews probably aren’t going anywhere in terms of being starters. And maybe Mead eventually proves to be the same, but for now we expect he’ll likely have to keep fighting guys like AD Miller, Dahu Green and others.

In terms of the actual practice, TFB was told Baxter had a pretty nice one-handed grab during 1-vs-1’s. Also that Westbrook and Jordan Smallwood had some long receptions during the team period.

Will also say that a lot of people I spoke to really like AD Miller. In fact, I’ve had more than one person tell me they feel he’s better than Mead. However, I spoke to Brandon about it who said that from what he’s hearing the staff just feels like Mead is more consistent/reliable right now. But again, these guys are going to have all of fall camp to prove themselves. So we’ll see how things eventually shake out.

One person I (K) talked with did describe Mead as a guy who “maybe doesn’t run the prettiest routes, but he’s so tall and erratic in his movement that you have to respect him.” I get the sense that Miller looks the part, in terms of running cleaner routes and having better apparent body control, but that Mead is effective and gets results.

Cornerback: Sounds like the depth chart at CB as of right now is Jordan Thomas and Dakota Austin with the first team, with Michiah Quick (behind Thomas) and PJ Mbanasor (behind Austin) backing them up. Didn’t hear anything monumental at this spot coming out of the first practice. Was told all the guys looked like they needed to work a little rust off.

I did hear that Quick struggled, as expected, with his technique and with calls occasionally, but that’s not surprising for a first true practice at a new position. We’ll have to wait and see where things are at next week and in the weeks to come.

Offensive Line: The focus of my conversation with a source about the offensive line was in regards to the right side, primarily because we’re of the opinion things from LT – C seem pretty much set. So with respect to that right side, TFB was told the current starting RG, Ben Powers, struggled a little bit in that first practice. Meanwhile, Dru Samia was taking reps at right tackle but the coaches were also having both Bobby Evans and Quinn Mittermeier rotate in there as well.

The impression we were given is that the coaches are definitely looking for a solid option at right tackle in the event they need to move Samia inside. Having said that, Alex Dalton, could potentialy resolve any issues they may have at RG as discussed in Thursday’s Open Post. He’s very athletic guy, but unfortunately he wasn’t able to go on Thursday due to that hand issue we told you about in the OP. – (Super K)

Johncarlo Valentin: TFB asked about the status of 2016 OL signee Johncarlo Valentin to which we were told he is not expected to qualify and likely heading the JUCO route. – (Brandon)

– Adrian Ealy: After not being able to attend the BBQ, it was expected that 2017 OL & OU offer Adrian Ealy would instead make it to Norman at some point this week to take in a practice. However, TFB has learned that will also now not be happening.

Ealy still plans on using one of his five official visits to see OU at some point during the season, but the odds of an unofficial visit taking place prior to that does not seem likely.

Kenneth Murray: Earlier this week we shared some notes from our conversation with 2017 LB and recent visitor, Kenneth Murray (Missouri City, TX). Murray is set to announce his decision next Wednesday (Aug. 10). Murray told TFB the decision will come down to “Texas, OU and A&M. And I’ll be announcing at my school.”

Based on my conversations with Murray, I think the Sooners are the team to beat here. – (Super K)

Patrick Fields: You likely remember the Sooners extending an offer to 2018 in-state DB, Patrick Fields last week when he was on campus for the BBQ. More good news regarding Fields, in that he plans to be back in Norman this weekend.

Fields tells TFB he will spend the night in Norman on Friday and be at OU “all day tomorrow (Saturday).” – (Brandon)

No mention of Lewis with the WR’s? I figured he was brought in to start.

I’m hoping Jones can get a bunch of snaps too. I see him as the next Broyles/Shep type of guy.

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

    Love hearing about Gallimore

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

Thank you gentlemen! Great OP even if Ealy couldnt make it

  • Slim Sooner says:

Lots of great info here, thanks TFB! Good on Gallimore. OUr receiving crew has mucho potential. Extremely excited for this season, as always a homer.

  • SoonerFan92 says:

Goodness I hope that Gallimore starts at one of the DE spots this year.

    • wolfbuilder says:

Only way he starts is if he plays before walker, Dimon is set in stone as a starter imo

      • SoonerFan92 says:

I really like Dimon, but I don’t think he is starter material with the current young guys we have.

        • Boom says:

Comes down the being consistent in their assignments. Flashes are great but they will also get you in trouble if not following the right assignment. If Gallimore puts both together, it will be hard to keep him off the field.

          • SoonerFan92 says:

I totally agree. Dimon seemed to be ok at the start of a game, but as it got later in the contest he was getting wore out from the bigger lineman he was going against.

          • Bob Edwards says:

That’s why depth is important in these days of 90+ play per game offenses.

          • Lane Gilstrap says:

The weight he has gained should help.

          • Bob Edwards says:

Yep rather have a boring guy in the right place than a guy who looks great getting to the wrong place.

        • wolfbuilder says:

He does his job, hits his gaps, ties up blockers, doesnt get out of place, and is almost never out of control

          • Dick Bump says:

Yep. He’s consistent. Plays with passion, too.

          • wolfbuilder says:

I’m not trying to say Dimon is the best d lineman, just saying he does his job everytime, and has the trust of his players and most importantly bob and company

          • Dick Bump says:

I made this comment earlier and it disappeared into cyber purgatory. Dimon has made a lot of plays. I’m not sure why he is getting the criticism other than excitement about the potential of the new guys. Obviously, the coaches don’t see him as a negative…..If this shows up twice, it must be Disqus.

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

No, it’s Metz on Disqus. Always his fault.

      • SoonerFan92 says:

Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t Walker play behind Dimon last year? Tapper was the other DE.

      • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Dude no way. Dimon is good but he’s maxed out. Gallimores upside is far greater than anything Dimon can bring to the table.

        • wolfbuilder says:

100% chance Dimon starts, if he doesn’t it’s cause of off the field issues, sorry he does his job, there is more to playing dline then running up the field to try and sack the qb, setting the line is more important then running g up field and creating running lanes, this is also the reason romar starts he does his job very well

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

I have zero doubts about Dimon starting over gallimore, but do I for one second believe his spot is set in stone like you believe? Hell no. If gallimore takes any starting spot it won’t be from Walker it will be Dimon’s spot. I’m a fan of Dimon but there’s no doubting the fact he gasses out and after that he’s non existent. I hope gallimore steps up enough to allow Dimon the quality rest time he needs to be effective the entire game. I don’t want you to think I’m hating on him because that’s certainly not the case, I just believe that if gallimore takes a starting spot it will be Dimon’s spot rather than our future NFL draft pick at DE in Walker.

          • SoonerFan92 says:

I just can’t agree that he is able to set the line as well as you’re implying.

        • Lane Gilstrap says:

I think Dimon putting on some weight is gonna help him out immensely. He was a little lighter and that hurt a little.

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

For sure, plus the emergence of gallimore will hopefully keep him fresh. We need him ready to go for the opener! He’s going back to his home city so you know he wants to show out.

      • wolfbuilder says:

        Walker played both

    • Cush Creekmont says:

Guys don’t have to start to be significant contributors. Rotating to keep fresh is very important. If he is a disrupting force, he can sub as a step up in the right situations. Two deep as a minimum to keep all fresh.

      • SoonerFan92 says:

True, but the starters usually get the most reps. Except for Walker. I think that he got more reps as a backup.

      • Bob Edwards says:

Until our DL recruiting went down hill our philosophy on the DL was always to rotate two guys at every position to keep them fresh. Hard to do that though when the drop off in talent is too extreme.

        • Cush Creekmont says:

Right. I think (and hope) we are back to having a strong 2-deep. If Gallimore is only used to spell another and/or in likely passing situations, that will be better than we’ve seen from young players (except Walker) in recent years.

  • Cush Creekmont says:

Thanks guys! Very good to hear Gallimore is progressing. Just can’t get enough practice info this time of year – keep it coming!

  • Bob Edwards says:

Good news on Gallimore. The better this DLine is the less I worry about the young LBs and DBs. Putting pressure on the QB and stuffing the run fix a lot of issues with the D.

    • SoonerFan92 says:

Agree. It truly does start up front.

    • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Exactly. Dominant defensive line makes up for a lot. Just look at josh Norman. Dude thinks he’s the best corner and now that he’s on the redskins the dude can’t cover anyone since their defensive line is booty.

  • hOUligan says:

This weekend OP is like a trip to the fair. A roller coaster of news w the big high being Gallimore ‘bullying’. Get the feeling he might have been the reason ‘Powers struggled’. Then downhill w the Oline depth but up thinking on Dalton and Evans. Down w the news on Jon Carlo and Ealy not making it to Norman but the big up w Murray being on BOOM watch next week. Whew. Thanks for the vente’ rush to start my day, K!!

    • Super K says:

He was indeed the reason but I didn’t want to call him out lol

      • Doobie74OU says:

Thanks K! I was thinking like Houlihan above with Powers struggling and Gallimore having a good day. With this in mind do you get the sense that Powers stuggled because Gallimore was playing so well or that Gallimore looked really good because Powers was struggling. I seem to remember a lot of OU lineman “struggling in practice” when lined up across from guys like Gerald McCoy(not to compare McCoy to Gallimore) but we’re still very good lineman because they rarely faced anybody like McCoy so was just wondering if there was a true sense on whether it was a result of Powers struggling (which wouldn’t be all that suprising at his first practice) or Gallimore was just that dominate!

        • CrimsonNative says:

That’s a great question that could bring some clarity to the report.

        • KJ1123 says:

My two cents is this. Everything is relative. For example, there are alot of great blockers (Tackles) in the NFL. But I would say more than 50% of those guys, get totally dominated by JJ Watt. Doesnt mean theyre terrible. IMO powers isnt the answer at guard…neither is Julious….or even Ford. The best guard combos we have I think…are Alvarez and Dalton, then Dalton and Samia, Dalton and Ford, then Ford and Samia. Im sure Coach B will be stressed out through the first week and a half while he figures the right combo out.

          • Doobie74OU says:

Kind of what a was thinking I remember Demarcus Ware used to make Tyrone Smith look silly in practice but not many others did during actual games. Are you thinking Alvarez is for sure the center and thus not a guard option? And what do you see as Samia best position, RT or Guard? (Obviously were he plays will depend on other guys stepping up) I really like what I am hearing about Dalton at RG being so athletic. Seems like a lot of our best and long runs came last year running to the left with Brown collapsing the left side of the d-line and the RG and H-back pulling and leading the way.

          • KJ1123 says:

I dont think Coach B trusts anyone enough to go away from Alvarez at center. But Wren is actually looking ok so it may be an option if the need is there. I think Samia would excel at guard. From what I hear he comes from a family of guards so hes been coached from a young age. But as of right now hes better at tackle.

          • Doobie74OU says:

Cool thanks and just a clarifying question when you say “he’s better at tackle” do you mean he is playing the tackle position better than the guard position or that he is playing tackle better than any of the other options we have?

          • KJ1123 says:

Both Doob. He hasnt had a chance to really play guard yet but I think thats where he will excel.

  • TimPOBSooner says:

I have not seen or heard anything about Lewis. Am I missing something?

    • Super K says:

i didn’t ask about him specifically

      • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

So does AD need to be more consistent in catching the ball? Because if he’s already a better route runner than mead and he’s younger then I don’t really see why he wouldn’t start over him.

        • thebigdroot says:

Would you rather have a guy who makes plays or a guy who runs pretty routes?

          • SoonerFan92 says:

I know it was just the spring game, but he didn’t have trouble catching the ball then.

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Ok, but considering mead has what, 20 receptions in 3 years? I mean come on. We’ve been hearing about him for so long and he’s done nothing to back it up. Obviously I want who ever the best is out there but if AD is slightly behind Mead then I say throw the younger guy in there.

          • Bob Edwards says:

He’s only played two years but likewise only had six catches. It appears he may be the typical Norvell recruit, looks good on paper but missing some element to his game to make him a really good player.

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Exactly. On paper his size is something that had all of sooner nation salivating over, but the lack of production plus the case of the dropsies and the fact the dude can’t gain a pound is what has caused him to ride the pine. I just want that big physical possession receiver we have been missing for years. I don’t care who it is lol.

          • SoonerFan92 says:

Evidently he is up to 200lbs now.

          • KJ1123 says:

I asked about Mead once and the reason I got for why he disappears during the season made me respond “are you kidding me, that makes absolutely no sense” ever since then I dont look to him to contribute on game day.

          • SoonerFan92 says:

Are you able to elaborate at all?

          • KJ1123 says:

Only thing I can say is kids make decisions that they feel are best for them. Just gotta wait and see how things pan out.

          • SoonerFan92 says:

Dang. I figured you weren’t going to able to speak on it much, but thanks for the insight.

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Actually, I want whoever has the better release to get the PT. The consistency will come with whoever is getting the reps. If you can’t separate from the corners then none of this matters.

          • thebigdroot says:

I’m with you on this and was just trying to give another perspective.

        • SoonerinLondon says:

Hard not to be better at catching the ball than Mead. (you’d think)

      • TimPOBSooner says:

Thanks for the quick reply. AS usual, TFB rocks!

  • SoonerOracle737 says:

I really like the talk of unstoppable D linemen. It’s been a while…good to hear it again!

  • ohiosoonerdevildog says:

So any word on when we will be hearing who this secret boom for 17 is?

    • SoonerFan92 says:

I’ve been wondering about that, too.

    • Lincoln Hawk says:

      I have a feeling Mr. T Rob knows….

      • ohiosoonerdevildog says:

He does know. But doesn’t want to steal the kid’s thunder as he put it. I was just wondering when the recruit was going to announce it himself.

        • Lincoln Hawk says:

Gotcha, sorry I misread the when as a who.

        • SoonerFan92 says:

Yeah, would be nice if we at least knew when to expext some news. Either way, I’m happy if we get a BOOM in the end.

          • ohiosoonerdevildog says:

No doubt. Thing is I’m a UPS driver so refreshing on my phone to keep checking isn’t exactly following company policy lol.

        • Lincoln Hawk says:

Speaking of Thunder, how about Russ Westbrook!! STUD!

          • ohiosoonerdevildog says:

Yes he is. Obviously being here in Ohio I root for the Cavs so I hope if they meet in the finals again Durant goes down with Steph and the bunch.

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

I was happy for Cleveland this year. I heard that Durant, OK was trying to change their name to Westbrook, OK. Not sure if true, but pretty funny either way.

          • ohiosoonerdevildog says:

That is hilarious. Even more funny if it were to come to fruition.

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

Yep, now I’m just waiting for Blake to come home (a la Lebron) to win the Thunders first championship.

          • ohiosoonerdevildog says:

That’d be awesome. And much deserved.

          • SoonerFan92 says:

There’s a lot of talk about it. I sure hope it is true.

          • Birddawg says:

            Show the love.
            Buy jerseys. 😉

      • bommer85 says:

Ya T rob said there is a 17 recruit too

      • T. Rob says:

I don’t know much info on 2018, other than OT Sampson IMO is OU to lose. Ty and him train together and I get a good sense from his father OU and tOSU are the 1a and 1b. However I know it will be atleast next summer before he commits anywhere. Also 18′ OT walker and his camp are working hard on selling C. DUNLAP from IMG. So if things play out in OUr favor your starting line in 19’/20′ could look like this B. Walker 6’6 305 Hayes 6’5 320 Newman 6’3 300 Robinson 6’5 305 Sampson 6’7 310. Thats the size of a NFL line.

    • Super K says:

      It’s a 18 recruit

  • Brian says:

    BOOM WATCH:
    Kenneth Murray
    Omar Manning
    Xavier Newman
    K’Lavon Chaisson
    Cameron Rising (’18)
    Patrick Fields (’18)

  • SamSooner says:

I get all of this great news and I have to leave to see a client. Great. It’ll have to wait for later.

Thanks, TFB Mods for the great OP that I get to read later.

    • Cush Creekmont says:

Get that work Sam! We’ll welcome you back to Boom-watch after you seal-the-deal.

    • KJ1123 says:

      Bye Sam

      • Cush Creekmont says:

KJ – Don’t be wasting all your investigating time on here. You have important info to dig out. We old farts can keep watch 🙂

        • KJ1123 says:

Hahaha well the TFB posters are pretty smart when it comes to recruiting they figure most of the Booms and busts out pretty quick. Curious though of we get Murray, how do our numbers for our other targets.

  • DR LEO MARVIN says:

Gallimore sounds ready to knock heads off. Good OP.

  • Dick Bump says:

Love these OPs. It gets you pumped for the season to start. I’ve got to buy a new Delbert McClinton Koozie and I’ll be ready.

  • thebigdroot says:

Who’s backing up the safety positions? Would hate for one of these two to go down and not have a reliable back up.

  • Jeff says:

Hopefully the WR spot will not be a weakness

    • thebigdroot says:

Yes sir. We all remember the year Shep was hurt. That was painful to watch.

    • Birddawg says:

      Not worried.
Having an efficient accurate QB and a creative OC elevates the entire offense.
We are going to score points on the ground and through the air. Balanced

      • KJ1123 says:

As long as we have Andrews and Dede I won’t worry.

        • GrandeBass says:

True, but we still haven’t seen LR use Andrews anywhere but the red zone. I’d like another man or two step up and consistently make big plays before I stop worrying……Ah who am I kidding, I never stop worrying.

      • Jofield says:

Exactly 2014 issues at WR were largely due to coaching imo. Although overall talent has improved.

      • ohiosoonerdevildog says:

Not to mention another year under the players belts in Rileys system.

    • SoonerinLondon says:

I’m picking Mykel Jones to be the breakout guy in the WR group and to be the next great slot player (if you consider Andrews more TE than slot).

You heard it here first. Check back after the season.

  • ohiosoonerdevildog says:

Ok so any of you currently residing in Oklahoma know of any job openings so I can move me and the family down there? My wife doesn’t believe I’d actually move, but I told her if I found a decent enough job there we’d be gone. I’m a UPS driver so I have experience driving. Also have experience in warehouses. And was also in the military ( I know Capt. Obvious statement)?

    • Cush Creekmont says:

Don’t know about any hiring, but UPS and FedEx deliver to my office about every day, so there is a little action in Tulsa.

      • ohiosoonerdevildog says:

Unfortunately as an hourly I cant transfer without losing all of my seniority. Which blows.

      • ohiosoonerdevildog says:

Believe me if I could transfer within the company down there I’d be down there faster than AD running roughshod all over Texas.

  • OUn8v says:

Thanks for the news. I enjoy watching good defense and so it was when I first read about Geneo Grissom when he was still playing at Hutch in high school. Now I read he’s done kicked somebody’s butt in practice with N.E. I only hate that I have to watch the Pats to watch him.

Then, I started following Samia and haven’t been disappointed. It was frustrating to watch at the first of last year until things settled in at RT. I’ve been anxious to see what Gallimore would do and I get to be all excited again. Damn, it’s good to be a Sooner fan!

  • soonerjunky says:

Am I the only one cheering for Jordan Smallwood? He has the physical tools. Local kids who got hurt and has missed some time. He is a senior and I’d like to see him get a chance

    • Brian says:

Absolutely rooting for him! I know he’s been an asset in the blocking game. His physicality should carve a role in the offense. Maybe he can be in the rotation and get a catch or two a game.

    • Dick Bump says:

You bet. Love to see him emerge. He sure looks the part of a football player.

    • Tom Turman says:

He’s actually going to be a redshirt junior this year, so he has 2 years left to make a mark.

    • Birddawg says:

He battled some injuries early on.. probably stunted his growth a bit.
I thought Riley said he wanted to rotate 8 or more guys at WR.. I would like to see him on the field too.

    • Cav66 says:

I’m with you on hoping that Smallwood has a breakout year. He has the build of an NFL receiver, and flashes some great plays now and again. I would love to see him put it all together and have a great year.

    • Maranatha846 says:

I just can’t help but remember all the drops all receivers not named Shepherd had last year. You can teach route running, getting off blocks, etc, but catching the ball consistently is something you either can or can’t do.

  • metzker says:

Great OP K,Disqus is working and im so dam busy i cant post,go figure.

  • Jofield says:

So we likely don’t have a senior starter on the OL? These guys are just going to get better and better!

    • Birddawg says:

Not to mention ’17 Robinson/Hayes ’18 Walker.. Oline has a bright future..

      • Jofield says:

We have already seen what Bedenbaugh does with those diamonds in rough. Can you imagine the elite talents coming in under the master’s tutelage? I’m psyched for OL play going forward!

  • j l says:

Is murray more of a true OLB like kelly, or a pass rush specialist that might hurt our chances with gumbs/chaisson?

  • soonermusic says:

“staff just feels like Mead is more consistent/reliable right now.” Seems to be the coaches’ main concern. The consistent/reliable thing is the issue that all of the great prospects, Mead foremost among them, seemed to struggle mightily with last year and the year before. If he’s conquered that, I’d expect him to see the field a lot.

  • soonermusic says:

Can’t wait to see how the cornerback position shakes out. I keep reminding myself that the ordering, team wise, at this point is often something the coaches use for motivation, so it’s not necessarily a reflection of who’s where. I think they factor in experience as well.

    • Jofield says:

Cooks has shown himself to be great teacher. He will have his two-deep ready to go whoever that may be.

  • Jofield says:

So am I the only one here concerned about the RB position? …[crickets]…

    • Fear The Magic says:

Im a little concerned that they might hurt someone…if that counts.

      • Cush Creekmont says:

Or maybe there will be too many choices for Riley.

        edit –

        • Tony B says:

Hell Anderson and Brooks are a pretty good duo to have as back ups.

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Plus Abdul Adams. Kid will be real solid for us.

          • Tony B says:

I know it’s a rarity for Stoops to RS a talented RB now days but I hope they do with Adams to hopefully give him more time to actually play RB and not just special teams. He, Anderson, and Sermon would be a great trio next year if (god lets hope not) Perine and Mixon were to both leave early.

          • Tony B says:

          • Dick Bump says:

I’d like to see them redshirt more. Realistically, how many 5th year players do we have? It seems like so many leave early, I can see why they don’t redshirt more than they do.

      • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Mixon looks for contact and I love it lol. It’s no secret he’s my man crush, but man I love the way the dude plays.

      • SoonerinLondon says:

As long as they don’t hurt Baker. That’s the only guy that truly has no backup.

      • SoonerinLondon says:

As long as they don’t hurt Baker. That’s the only guy that truly has no backup.

    • Bob Edwards says:

      Yes.

    • Tony B says:

I know what Mixon did last year and we all know how talented he is but I expect he has a breakout year this year. He looks bigger / stronger and I think Riley will use him and Perine a lot more together for a full season this year. Having a quality backup like Anderson will allow them to let both backs do even more than before, if that’s possible.

      • Jofield says:

Yeah it actually took the offense several games to figure out to utilize our two-back sets last year. We start out way ahead of where we were.

    • Boom says:

Just one thing I ask is that they don’t both get nicked up within minutes of each other like they did against TCU. Trevor didn’t play well but with both of them out it didn’t help him much either.

      • SoonerFan92 says:

All I could think of when that happened to them was, “When it rains, it pours.”

        • Jofield says:

Yes and remember that was all exacerbated by Anderson being injured previously. What’s amazing is our RB depth this year is even better than last year!

      • Tony B says:

Hopefully a healthy Anderson this year will help that situation. Ross just was to straight line of a runner in this system. Good luck to him at Mizzou and thank you Mr. Ross for all the quality returns but I think our back up RB position is in a much better place this year with Anderson as back up in lieu of Ross. I know Anderson was hurt last year that led to that but lets hope that’s not the case this season.

    • Mark_in_VA says:

      Only injuries.

  • Boom says:

I know these guys won’t start and some may RS but I’m still interested in how they are doing.

Jon-Michael Terry – outside of being an Okie, his size and speed intrigue me but realize he will need to adjust to the speed of the game.
Amani Bledsoe – Under the radar guy but curious to hear about his athletic ability.
Logan Robertson – Did Runnels get him ready? He’s OL so it may be a year or two but still interested.
Gabriel Campbell – Does he come back more determined than ever?
Kenneth Mann – Will he make the rotation or is he a year of so away
Carson Meier – Will he play any role or will he even make the rotation?
Dwayne Orso-Bacchus – Athletic, yes but does that translate to any playing time this year?

    • Tony B says:

Being from KS and seeing Bledsoe play once against my hometown HS team I am very interested in seeing what he can do, especially since I hear he has added a ton of muscle to his frame this spring and summer. He was a standout to say the least (second best HS player in the state) on the field but was a little lean for a college DE. Very quick and disciplined though.

    • Coach JK says:

      Add Lampkin to that list.

  • CcrBoomer says:

Hearing anything about the defensive tackles this class? Texas cleaned house on all the local talented DT’s last year. I hope OU doesn’t let that happen again this year

  • Tag says:

I apologize if I missed it. What about Geno Lewis ? I haven’t heard anything about him.. Thanks

  • Cush Creekmont says:

In those 2nd practice photos – a Lewis sighting or two.

  • SoonerFan92 says:

Kelly looks to have put on some good size in the link to pics I posted below. Also, you see Tay going agianst Mayfield in one pic (starting for this mornings practice), and what looks like Deberry going against Orlando (Ford was at guard and Alvarez at center). Ward looks to be with some of the guys that are labeled starters as well. I know that you have to take these pics with a grain of salt, but its the offseason so I’m keeping myself busy!

  • Lincoln Hawk says:

Hey guys and gals, I’m heading to Haiti for a week in the morning so any prayers would be greatly appreciated. Hopefully I will come back to a week full of BOOMS and awesome practice reports.

  • Michael says:

I am a bit confused as where guys like DJ Ward and Austin Roberts see playing time in the 3-4/ 3-3-5 defense. Is this a situation where they would only see time when/if we line up in a 4-3? Does anyone have any insight on this, or thoughts? thanks!

    • Matt says:

I think a lot of us Sooner fans are confused about that. I’ve been hoping for a post from the Brainiacs on this for a while

    • Jordan says:

Austin Roberts is the prototypical DE size, 6’6″ 275 lbs. He would play the 5-technique in a 3-4. Ward is a little smaller, 6’2″ 265, but still would play that 5-technique. Our 3-4 alignment, IMO, is a little misleading. While there are 4 linebackers on the field, one is almost always rushing the QB (Striker last year). Occasionally we rush both OLB. I think our 3-4 alignment is misleading. We typically have one OLB who is better at rushing the passer, and one who is better in coverage.

      • Michael says:

thanks for the info. You are saying the rushing OLB is essentially a stand up DE? If so, would it make sense to want your 5 technique to be more of a DT size, much like Walker (300lb), who I believe will be playing there for us this year, rather than Tapper/Roberts/Ward sized guys (270-280lbs)?

        • Jordan says:

Yes, the 3-4 DE size would ideally be somewhere between 280-300 lbs. (see Bama’s D-line). That is why a guy like Mark Jackson and Caleb Kelly are intriguing fits in our D, both could easily weigh 240, rush the passer, and play in coverage. You would like both of your OLB to look like that IMO.

          • Jordan says:

Deberry as well. He is listed at 6’2″ 238 lbs.

          • Michael says:

Awesome…On another note, Kelly is listed on the roster at 221 right now. Has anyone heard anything to suggest he has bulked up any since this weight taking? at 6’3, 220 seems pretty light to be taking on those TE blocks as well as the other big blocks this year. I do agree, he will probably end up somewhere around 240, just wondering if he’s closed any of that gap yet?

          • Scott says:

Having Mark Jackson play the striker position while Caleb Kelly plays the other OLB.

    • KJ1123 says:

Both of them are playing end in a 3-4…with Neville in the middle or Que in rotation.

    • Bob Edwards says:

It’s like football light. It just isn’t real football until they put the pads on. But I will take light over none.

    • DCtitan42 says:

Both Baker and S. Parker mention Tay Evans as someone who will become known SOONER rather than later, I like it.

      • SoonerFan92 says:

Mentioned this above, but Mayfield spoke of Obo as a surprise on defense, too. I’m really hoping that he has a stellar year.

  • SoonerFan92 says:

Is Cesar Ruiz a legit possibility for us?? We seem to be in his top 3 with Alabama and Michigan.

  • JJSoona says:

I can’t tell you how excited I am for this coming season. Am I stupid for wanting a rematch with Clemson in the NCG?

    • Nate Broadus says:

No, you’re not stupid. That said, I just want a championship–and I don’t care who OU has to go through to get it.

      • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Exactly, but another game against Clemson would literally give me a heart attack. I had 12 big boy scotches before our game last year and once that game started I was so nervous I was completely sober lol. If we won a natty beating them then that would be glorious but I don’t know if I could handle another loss to them.

    • metzker says:

I do not want clemsa to sniff the playoffs eva!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Tony B says:

Did anyone see where Stoops said last night Baxter would be the punt returner if the season started today? Also said Mykel Jones is really turning heads though and Westbrook and Mixon would get looks there also.

    • metzker says:

      No,do tell!

      • Tony B says:

It was on 247 OU facebook today. There’s a link that sends you to an article on their web page. Evidently Stoops said it at some public function last night.

  • Walter Sobcek says:

I know I shouldn’t even watch espn, but I can’t help it sometimes. Just saw College Football Live, and one of their “experts” said OU was an overrated team, but, except for the Ohio State game, they had a weak schedule they could “cruise” through.

    • OUn8v says:

      LOL They’re foolish. I don’t watch them.

    • SoonerinLondon says:

OU is an easy pick to be overrated because historically we haven’t performed when ranked in the top 5. We need to prove that we can.

    • Bob Edwards says:

Mathematically you are almost always going to be overrated if you start near the top. If you start at five, there are only four slots you can go that are higher and 123 that are lower.

    • Boom says:

If OU was in SEC, they would rave about how good OU and look for them to compete for a natty.

    • Spitting Bull says:

They said it was because of what we lost on Defense. They said the same about Ohio State. That remark about a weak schedule. Wow…Just wow. That’s a special kind of stupid.

  • ACreativeUsername says:

SuperK or any other mod can y’all find out what the players ab workouts consist of? That picture that Jason Vos posted below… I am extremely jealous and would love to get even somewhat close to those results

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Metz, I was literally going to say in my first comment on this subject that “everyone has a six pack ( metz’s may just be alcohol ) but it’s covered by a layer of fat” but I didn’t know if you’d see it in time so I deleted that part lmao

          • metzker says:

I was put together well when i was your age.10years ago not bad but at 57 F it!!!!!

    • OceanDescender says:

Workout-wise, find a routine that is so demanding it scares you to have to do it again and get yourself over the hump (first 4-5 days of it). You’ll be addicted and transformed in no time after that.

  • Okie403 says:

love the defense talk but cant help but wonder with the ingredients of Perine, Mixon, Anderson, Baker, Andrews, DeDe, Smallwood, Lewis, Baxter, Flowers, etc and Coach B’s OL, what CoachLRiley is cooking up on the offensive side of the ball!?!?

  • KJ1123 says:

Heard that Kelly and Doucet are really fast and can run. Kelly is impressive because of his size. He’ll be monster after the winter.

  • SoonerFan92 says:

Saw that Mayfield listed Obo as his surprise guy for the defense this year before going on to Tay Evans. Really need some guys with size to take command of the starting OLB spots this year.

Whats up with that tweet KJ?

          • KJ1123 says:

No clue, first Im hearing it. I heard an LB talking about leaving though a couple days ago, but that was more like him pouting because he was going to have to fight for a spot. I was like really dude? Whats up with these kids nowadays? Smh.

          • Scott says:

            Who was the LB?

          • ZW_in_Austin says:

            DeBerry?

          • BackWhenOUBoysCabbagePatched says:

Did coaches/upper classmen talk him off the ledge or is he still out there pouting?

          • KJ1123 says:

Hes practicing so well see how it goes. Camp just started kids just have to trust the process.

          • BackWhenOUBoysCabbagePatched says:

Agreed. Surprised to hear bellyaching this early in camp.

          • ALar03 says:

Probably is seeing a freshman get more reps and doesn’t realize showing up and doing the bare minimum won’t get you a spot..

          • T. Rob says:

And there may be even more rumbling next year when ss17 step on campus next summer. Seems you always have some issues when you have classes that were not recruited by the current coaches mixed in with their recruited players. Plus the fact the coaches will play the best man for the job, regardless of their class will put pressure on upper classman if your bringing in talent at the position back to back years. Hopefully its worked out early,

          • KJ1123 says:

Right, it always happens. Nothings a given, have to constantly work for it even if you’re a starter, coaches arent going to stop recruiting.

          • ZW_in_Austin says:

Would you think it is more of a common theme for those that choose a program with the possibility of playing as a freshman or sophomore? Maybe going in as a freshman with only a projected senior starter in front of you, and expecting to move in easily as a RFr or So?

          • KJ1123 says:

Yeah definitely, the REALLY motivated kids are going to gravitate obviously to the program that will give them the chance to play early. But their chance to play starts way before they get to campus. Case and point is Samia. He had 2 seniors in front of him last year at the begining of camp. Came in busted his butt and had a very good first year, almost unheard of and unexpected. I think he was off the scout team by day 3. However I think its really common amongst the Juco players too. I can see them second guessing their choice if they only have a couple years to really make it happen.

          • ZW_in_Austin says:

I think they should show every freshman that picture that’s been posted several times of Baker and the WR group. Point specifically to Smallwood and explain that that’s what a couple years in a college program gets you. There is such an incredible difference in the size (and with that, ability) of a Jr/Sr vs a freshman.

          • Mike Reed says:

With that in mind, I’ve wondered how Alabama is able to continually get 5* talent and have the top recruiting class in the country. Saban has A LOT of talent that sits on the sidelines.

          • KJ1123 says:

Made me smile even more when we beat them in that one game 🙂

          • Brien Brown says:

Well Mike when you win 4 since 2009. Kids see that and regardless of the stars think well chances of getting a championship are good, plus if I make the rotation chances are I’ll be a big part of that which means I get noticed which means I get paid no matter what. Bama hasn’t produced a lot of stars so to speak but, they have kids that just fit them and those kids still wanna go and earn that spot. What Stoops did early on was recruit the kids that fit his system and mixed in the top name kids and it worked. Now Stoops is back to getting the kids he feels fits the system but, is doing a better job of getting big names to come play for him as well. I always felt they needed to recruit kids in state better and get the talent here and then go get the National kids, this is happening now and Oklahoma has produced some real nice recruits as of late. Tulsa to me is the one that if OU and OSU aren’t recruiting them they should be Tulsa has let so much talent leave their back yard to go to other D1 schools, I get Tulsa is a hard school but still!

          • T. Rob says:

Mike have you seen his transfer list. Speaking of that he just did a press cinference today trying to down play a player who just left.
            https://youtu.be/z9AvAfObKy4

          • Dustin says:

If you don’t want to get passed up by an underclassman, you better be putting in the work, because the recruiting classes are only going to get better.

          • Sooner Ray says:

Being the big man on campus through high school then suddenly becoming just another talented guy trying to win a spot is a hard adjustment for many of these kids.

Agreed, cant give up because of competition or where you are on the depth chart.

      • metzker says:

        Maybe,yes.

        • Jordan Esco says:

Granted, we don’t get to see the inside of their helmets very often, if ever, so maybe this isn’t something new. Not sure either way, just a thought.

          • SoonerFan92 says:

If I understand this post then you think that the Sooners label is on the inside of the helmet? It’s actually on the outside of the visor. he got a few weeks ago

          • CrimsonNative says:

            Correct, it’s just a visor.

          • SoonerFan92 says:

Yeah. I believe he bought it personally for his High School helmet, which I don’t think he can wear on gamedays since you can’t have anything darker than a 20% tint. At least Oklahoma HS FB is that way.

          • CrimsonNative says:

I’ve never understood how players can even see with those things on.

          • SoonerFan92 says:

It’s not that bad from the inside. The outside is much darker. The officials want to be able to see your eyes without taking the helmet off in case you get a head injury.

          • Boom says:

Summer time it gets hot inside those visors.

          • Jordan Esco says:

          • SoonerFan92 says:

Ha. I was actually having the same problem as you. Only reason I knew was because he had shown it on his Twitter account earlier.

          • SoonerFan92 says:

Wasn’t there a rumor about a year ago with the Sooners possibly coming out with a black alternate uniform?

          • SoonerinLondon says:

            NO!

          • SoonerFan92 says:

I like the traditional schools unis better, but I’m fine with alternates every ONCE in a while. Seems they have become a must for the recruits. I never was crazy about the alternates that we have now.

          • SoonerinLondon says:

I’m OK with alternates, just not black…too cliché and unrelated to OU. Our tradition is strong enough that we should be able to come up with alternates that embrace and embellish it.

          • SoonerFan92 says:

Idk. I would be ok to the idea of black alternates. No, they won’t be up to par on the tradition aspect of it, but unfortunately most recruits don’t care about that kind of stuff.

          • BleedCrimson says:

YES! I’m old school, but love the alt uni’s. Do not wanna see us change OUr helmet logo, but would love to see some flash in the uni.

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Black with Crimson would look toooooooooo sexy. Oh my! I know a lot of people aren’t fans of it but for a game like Ohio state? Bust out some alternates and win that game and Boom! I hope we wear our alternates for that game.

          • Boom says:

There must be kryptonite on that helmet cause I can’t see in it.

      • Jordan says:

If you are referring to an alternate OU helmet, I would say no. That is probably his high school helmet, with an OU visor.

  • Jake H. says:

I’m sure it’s referenced below somewhere, but does Ealy have a really bad scheduler or does he just not want to be here?

crystal ball for Chaisson to Houston

    • ZW_in_Austin says:

Man I hope we just pummel Houston. Embarrass them even. That’s a team with which we shouldn’t have to compete to this degree.

    • Brien Brown says:

That puts Houston at 11% for Chaisson and OU is at a 56%
and Texas at 33% for Murray which is equal to us. The guy picking usually follows trendy picks and picks late hence why he has an 80% look for Warren’s picks he is usually spot on with his picks and when it applies to OU!

      • ZW_in_Austin says:

But if you are in one train that leaves Houston at 9:00 AM CST headed to Dallas traveling 90 mph, and Warren is in another train traveling 48% of the speed of your train from OKC to Dallas and leaves at 8:15 AM CST, how much faster will your train arrive in Dallas? Please provide your answer in %.

        • Brien Brown says:

Roughly 33% faster give or take a few. Actually IDC but to the point of someone wanting to be a Debbie Downer and letting us all know someone predicted a kid we are in on to another school is not needed. Be a troll another site!

From who’s time frame are we calculating from? Relativity is important, if overlooked.

          • ZW_in_Austin says:

From the time-frame of both Bill Snyder and Les Miles. The Snyder-Miles-Space-Time-Continuum. Where time does not actually exist and the laws of physics appear to be both cockeyed and illogical.

        • Bob Edwards says:

          It’s a trick question.

As stated, you won’t arrive faster since you are traveling a slower speed (48%). Faster refers to speed not time.

However assuming you meant sooner rather than faster which refers to the time, it is still a trick question. He will arrive at 11:39 AM CST you will arrive at 1:02 PM CST.

          • BleedCrimson says:

But you forget. Since Austin is the center of a black hole, time is distorted.

    • Spitting Bull says:

Connecting Mixon with a rape? That’s an ugly stretch. Slanderous. When will this BS stop? Just imagine if he really emerges as a big star/heisman threat. I think Joe needs to address it head on or it will keep bubbling up any chance some hungry reporter gets a chance to exploit the story. Kid should probably show remorse. Publicly apologize. Follow up with coaches and players speaking of his good character and the work he’s done. Better than letting it simmer and hoping it doesn’t blow. It’s gonna blow.

      • Drew says:

I’m pretty sure he can’t apologize. Apologizing is tantamount to assuming guilt, and the girl’s attorney will eat him alive if he does so. Not to mention that, in the eyes of the media, no apology can be made by him that would be acceptable. Any statement made or attention drawn by him gives them an excuse to bring it up yet again.

        • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

It’s such a crappy situation and it just sucks because we all know Joe’s decision he made that night is not reflective of his character.

      • Sooner Ray says:

I think he has always wanted to do those things but was advised not to because of possible legal action pending, and now that the action is in motion, he dang sure can’t speak about it.

Man, upon first glance at today’s photos, I thought Manny Beal was a DB. Hope and assume he has a serious speed game. Does he have a RS available?

    • bommer85 says:

he was one of the perplexing signings for me last year…not sure he sees the field if mark jackson, kelly etc. learn quick

      • BackWhenOUBoysCabbagePatched says:

A package deal with Kapri comes to mind, but I doubt it since Kapri committed before Beal. Plus, as I understand it, we have had package deals of greater need and passed on them as a matter of principle (e.g., Duvernay, Wariboko, etc.).

    • LandThieve3 says:

He’ll be a special teams player

      • BackWhenOUBoysCabbagePatched says:

I hope not. I think he has talent. When I heard we were recruiting him and Kapri, I watched Kapri’s highlight tape, but looked at Beal, and vice versa. I noticed on plays that were not even their “highlight plays” (i.e., plays that were not on their respective highlight videos) they did not take plays off and rarely got beat. Beal looked to pack a lot of speed and intensity, but I am not sure how his game will translate on his current frame. If he struggles with the physicality at this level, I hope they do not burn his RS on special teams.

    • Super K says:

Been saying for a while…they are going to be the team to beat. When I first spoke to Marvin a couple years ago before he had any offers he said Texas was his favorite team. If they win this season…they’ll be the favorite. If they don’t…it opens the door for OU/LSU

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

It just sucks. We can’t get a DT to Norman? What is this?

        • bigrackhunter says:

The one silver lining in this is, since we run the 3-4 we really just need one NG in each class, yes last year we didn’t sign one, but we got Lampkin who could slide down and, Galimore as well. Plus Overton will be the starter after next year, unless Marvin is the second coming of Tommie Harris.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

That’s a relief. Okay, I’ll shut up on this now.

          • soonerthunder says:

Also Roberts, Rodriquez, etc. on the outside. We’ve been recruiting the other DL positions pretty well, and have a lot of young ones who can play the NG.

          • bigrackhunter says:

Was talking stickly NG and the future/outlook of that particular position. Roberts is a DE and Rodriguez is a outside LB. But agree there is 3 underclassmen that can step in and play NG, but in the 3-4 you need him to be your anchor, someone who can handle double teams every single, and keep his lbs clean.

          • soonerthunder says:

            Agree

        • DCinAZ says:

Turnover at the DL position coach job at OU is having an effect with teams neg recruiting against us.

      • bigrackhunter says:

With them signing both Southall and Daniels last year, can you see this playing into his decision, if he’s looking for immediate playing time?

      • KJ1123 says:

Thanks K. I commented above about the numbers, I think some kids dont take that into account which I feel they should. Hopefully in Oct well make a strong statement.

      • bommer85 says:

I think you are totally right, i think that sentiment goes for other big recruits as well. I said the other day that i feel like Texas having a bad year is almost as important as us having a good year for 17 and 18 recruiting

      • LandThieve3 says:

Not just him either. Other recruits will take notice. Which makes it even more important we whip Texass this year

      • SamSooner says:

I will say this: let’em stock up: a weak villain, (texsa) = a weak hero, (OU). A strong villain, (texsa) = a strong hero, (OU).

Edit: what I mean is OU needs texsa to be good in order to viewed accordingly.

      • Scott says:

IMO i think LSU will have another average year so i definitely see Big Marv deciding between OU and Texsa. Personally i love Greg Rodgers, he reminds me of Gerald McCoy.

      • Scott says:

I wanna throw you this scenario . What if Texsa had a 7 win season and makes a bowl game but OU beats Texsa that year and OU makes the college football playoff again. So based off of that whole scenario i gave you , If you had to make a prediction where would Marvin Wilson end up?

      • Lane Gilstrap says:

Whatever happened to Deionte Watts? Are we not recruiting him anymore? Seems like we’ve been fixated on just a couple guys.

      • BackWhenOUBoysCabbagePatched says:

They signed FIVE DTs in the 2016 Class, have five DT offers out now in 2017 (4 uncommitted) and Poona Ford will likely still be there Big Marv’s frosh year. I get that Marv will be BMOC, but hats off to Strong if he can pull him in given that depth.

    • BackWhenOUBoysCabbagePatched says:

Cesar is a bona fide monster. If you put that guy between Ty Rob and Hayes: happy days for Mr. Anderson, Double A and Mr. Sermon. Add Brey a year later and things get real interesting.

  • KJ1123 says:

Lineman looking at Texsa on both sides of the ball need to look at the numbers as well. Unless the coaches are telling them you can start here because the guys we have suck. They have a boatload of OLs and just picked up some really good young DLs.

  • bigrackhunter says:

Not to bash on the kid, because I was really high on him coming here, but seems a certain LB from Virginia is struggling, Via a couple guys in the know… which is concerning giving he’s on the first team defence. Hopefully he just needs to shake some rust off. With that being said the kid still has time to get acclimated and make the proper adjustments, with Kelly and Jackson pushing him.

    • LandThieve3 says:

I keep reading his problem is in coverage, which is what guys like Kelly exceed at. So we’ll see whether he improves or Kelly improves enough to get the nod come first game

      • ZW_in_Austin says:

There’s two from VA. Are you talking about the elder or younger? And if he’s struggling why is he on first time?

        • LandThieve3 says:

DeBerry. Lack of talent at the position and maybe he was the incumbent at his position before Kelly showed up

          • ZW_in_Austin says:

Well shoot. He went to the same high school as me – by that alone I was hoping he’d take off and impress. He’s still just a R Fr though

        • BackWhenOUBoysCabbagePatched says:

I also think because the kid is good and we have had two days of practice. Doubt the staff does anything harsh b/c a young’n is struggling a bit this early.

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

Think a lot of people thought he was a DE

      • bigrackhunter says:

He played exclusively DE in in high school but alot of people thought his ceiling was higher as a 3-4 olb, but sometimes that doesn’t always translate on the field. What seems to be hurting him the most, is he doesn’t “at this point” have that explosive first step that the coaches become accustomed to with Bond and Striker.

        • Soonerfandave84 says:

He looked ok in the spring. I think he will play especially on run downs because of his size

Coach Thib knows and see’s what’s in front of him. I put it in the mind from of NASCAR driver’s history. History has shown that talented young men grown up in the industry are nothing nice when it comes to being their turn on the track. Coach Thib is going to be nothing nice. First you have to deserve the right to be on the team, then earn your place and keep it. I do believe that was the template he was pressed with when he came thru OU. Who was his coach? • soonerthunder says:

ME TOO! Big desire of mine the last few years in recruiting. I wish he was about 3″ taller, but I like his weight. I have been wanting a WR who is fast (4.5 range), tall (at least 6’5″), and weighs at least what Smallwood does (220+).

Most CBs are in the 5’11” and below in reality, and weigh around 190 and under, so these kind of big WRs can be stronger, very physical, jump higher. Look at how valuable Andrews is from day one. Puts a ton of stress on a D. Smallwood has the weight I’m wanting (220), don’t know about his speed, and I wish he had about 3 more inches on him, but good enough to be 3-4″ on most CBs. I am hoping Farrar might be kind of guy too at 6’3″, but not there on the weight (they have him listed at 205 or so). He has the speed.

The smaller WRs out of HS and in college are quite plentiful, but a guy with this size and speed and weight that can catch the ball are pretty rare. They really stress Ds. In fact, with guys like this you can have a pretty otherwise mundane O look pretty good and the average fan won’t realize that it’s b/c so much help has to be given to the CB covering this type of WR. Opens up running game, all other aspects of the passing game, with a guy who may only catch 3-6 passes a game, but is a game changer.

        • SoonerfanTU says:

We’ve recruited quite a few bigger guys in recent years, and even over Stoops’ entire tenure. Outside of Kelly, none have really worked out. I personally think the smaller guys do better in this offense. Guys built like Clayton, Broyles, and Shep. That is why I’m so high on Jones, I think he has a similar build to some other great WR’s we’ve have in recent years.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

Is Lewis working inside? I thought he was an outside guy. Explains why he isn’t running 1st team. He probably isn’t going to beat out Andrews or Baxter.

Another CB to OU this morning for Hines 🙂

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

I wonder if we will have to wait til Monday for more practice notes. I either need more notes or a boom.

  • metzker says:

Busy for a Saturday on here TFB Probably dancing!

  • KJ1123 says:

NFL network at the Giants right now. Shep getting targeted alot…getting highlighted.

  • SoonerFan92 says:

Not to try and start any negative speculation, but I wonder why Abdul Adams isn’t with the other RB’s at Meet the Sooners? Is it supposed to be the starters and backups?

  • SooperDave says:

If you could have one of these players from the Stoops era able to play at their prime on this years defense, who do you think would help the most….. Tommy Harris, Dan Cody, Curtis Lofton, Derrick Strait, or Roy Williams?

    • Mark_in_VA says:

Tommy Harris, Dan Cody, Curtis Lofton, Derrick Strait, or Roy Williams?

      My answer: yes 🙂

    • KJ1123 says:

Tommie….Roy would get alot of penalties nowadays

    • Mark_in_VA says:

For a serious answer, I think the best player is TRRW, but safety is in great shape. Combining need and talent, I’d go with 1) Lofton, 1a) Harris.

    • Sooner Ray says:

Harris, gives us at least a one man advantage on every play.

    • Lane Gilstrap says:

We are in need at linebacker, but if we had Harris to wreck the other teams line we would be in great shape.

    • Daryl says:

      This year Lofton!

    • SooperDave says:

I’m unsure of who I’d prefer, but with the uncertainty with LB and CB I was leaning towards Curtis. Derrick and Roy were both always coming up big, Tommy was unblockable with one person, and Dan could pour on the pressure.

    • Bob Edwards says:

I would take any of them, but their aren’t very many college lineman who could contain Harris one on one. Having him would mean the D would be playing ten on eleven and that makes the whole defense better.

    • Brien Brown says:

That is a good question? Dan Cody was always my favorite player on the D, but Harris was so good, but so was Dusty and McCoy and Harris played with some pretty great D guys, Lofton was good but, so was Lewis, Lehman, Calmus, and Rufus. Strait another guy I loved but, we have had some great DB’s and Roy well in support he was great against the spread I think he would struggle. But to answer the question Harris out of those 5. Cody will always be the DE i’d take, Calmus would be my LB and Strait at CB and probably take Roy as a NB and Everage as my S against the spread especially. Plus LB seems ok with Evans and Evans IMO, and Parker, Thomas and Thomas are pretty special IMO at DB so the bigggest question to me would be the DL so that us why I pick Harris.

    • Dick Bump says:

I like them all, but with Tommy they’ll be so good they’re scary.

    • JBSooner says:

Roy Williams. He was just that special and that versatile. (FWIW…I’d take Gerald McCoy over Tommie Harris or any other DL in the Stoops era.)

    • ALar03 says:

Could you imagine AD in this offense… I mean perine and mixon are great college players but Adrian Peterson is a once in a lifetime type of player! Or you could even throw Mark Clayton in this offense and its over, he was the best receiver after the catch and with the field so spread He would have a field day!

    • BackWhenOUBoysCabbagePatched says:

Tommy without hesitation. Such a force in the trenches. Tommy and Walker would give every team in the country fits.

  • metzker says:

Live press conference on SoonerSports tv right now if anyone is interested.

  • Sooner Ray says:

Bob asked about turning Baker loose, answer- “Baker didn’t get hurt being Baker, he got hurt from cheap shots”.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

I have no problems with 90% of what Baker does. I just want him to be smart around the sidelines. No reason for him to duck his shoulder to pick up an extra yard (unless it’s 3rd/4th down and we need that yard) and take a big hit, when he can step out of bounds and stay healthier. He isn’t a big guy. We need him healthy all year.

    • SamSooner says:

      So, true.

  • HoustonChiver says:

Every time I hear Roll Tide this is what i picture

  • Maverick says:

I’m hearing Matthew Romar may have been injured in the first practice. Sorry if it’s been mentioned already, I didn’t dig through all the comments. Not sure of the severity.

Also heard that Abdul Adams absolutely melted a guy in the secondary. Shook him pretty bad and the whole offense went nuts over it. Exciting player.

    • Sooner Ray says:

Bob was high on Adams as well as Anderson in the presser today.

    • Lane Gilstrap says:

Haven’t heard. Thanks for the info.

    • BackWhenOUBoysCabbagePatched says:

I have been saying for a while that Double A might be special. A few days ago I went back and watched his HS tape vs Rodney Anderson’s. I think Anderson is going to be really good from everything I hear, but just based on what I saw on film, I think Double A is a meaningfully better talent. Future is bright; and even better: so is the present.

Mike was feeling good about the D, Riley speaking now.

  • Sooner Ray says:

Baker says Mykel Jones the most like Shep. Bob and Riley also raved about him.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

I said that very thing below. I really this he has the chance to be our next great WR.

    • Fear The Magic says:

How ironic would that be if because of Velus Jones committing to USC instead of us we ended up with an even better Jones and a Shepard type WR.
The only reason we went after Mykel was because Velus went Trojan.

    • SamSooner says:

      Yay!

I see you follow soccer, BC.

      • BleedCrimson says:

Yep, coached grade schoolers for 6 seasons.

        • SamSooner says:

Once you understand what’s going on, it’s a fun game to watch. It’s amazing how skilled the players are, while never touching the ball with their hands.

          • BleedCrimson says:

            Indeed!

          • BleedCrimson says:

Plus, we know that the French have a history to let down in the second half of games. Make them run from side to side, then attack over when we draw them back. Great game.

          • DrewChubbs says:

I played for 30 years +. I almost always touched the ball with my hands! And i did a lot less running than most soccer players, too.

            GKs do it better!

          • BleedCrimson says:

lol, my son was a Goalie. Once he got to college, he played intramural and coached a girls intramural team. Was a lot of fun for him.

    • SoonerCindy says:

Thanks for the update BC. We are in Kansas City right now at a soccer tourney.

  • Jordan Esco says:

As I was saying about media day….

Enjoy the local guys milking the s$&@ out of that coach speak for stories for the next three days tho 😉

    • Boom says:

If I hear identity one more time, I’m going to run into a wall.

    • BleedCrimson says:

Can you please name one local media person that you are willing to read on a daily basis? Seriously.

      • Jordan Esco says:

On a daily basis, that’s the standard? If so, it’d be literally no one. Though to be fair, the actual beat writers can offer me very, very little. But that’s not their fault, it’s simply a product of their job requirements. If I want anything, it’s the opinion of someone who covers the team every day. But they aren’t allowed to give their opinion in print. Their job, IMO, essentially consists of recapping things as they happen and/or after the fact. And that simply doesn’t interest me as I’m generally watching/listening to the exact same thing they are. So they’re not telling me anything I didn’t already know/see/hear.

        • Sooner Ray says:

          Even Jenni Carlson? 🙂

        • SoonerfanTU says:

Why would somebody with your knowledge want to listen to the opinion of people that don’t have that same knowledge? I certainly don’t want their opinion. I want them to report the facts. I’m smart enough to form my own opinions, and where I’m not, or want other opinions, I’ll come somewhere like here or numerous other players and converse with people that have way more knowledge than the average local media.

          • Maverick says:

Not Jordan, but the beat guys do have more access than the average media person and can pick up things just from being around that they might not be able to report on.

        • BleedCrimson says:

Thanks Jordan. Before I found this site, I had a daily subscription to the OKC paper for all of my Sooner info. No more.

    • Maverick says:

I kinda feel bad for them. Their job will probably be extinct soon. Their target market is basically casual readers over the age of 50.

Not saying that they’re any good, but it’s tough to be a print beat writer in 2016.

    • Sooner Ray says:

That surprised me when I heard it, said as if he plans to be around a couple more years.

      • Scott says:

I dont expect him to leave after this year.

        • SoonerfanTU says:

I don’t think I expect him to either, but he could, it wouldn’t surprise me. How cool would it be to have a great season, and bring back Mayfield, Perine, and Mixon all next year. Not many teams have that kind of talent for 3 years together on the field.

          • Scott says:

It would be crazy. I can see Baker coming back if we win the Natty. When Joe Mixon committed to OU i remember him saying ” I didn’t come to OU just to win a Championship , i came to start a dynasty.”

          • BleedCrimson says:

I love that in the kid. Especially when I expect him to be a huge part of the offense production.

      • SoonerFan92 says:

I didn’t think of it that way. But I’ll take it!

    • Maverick says:

Have heard he’s a great teammate and is very much “bought in” to the program. Just my opinon, but I think he appreciates that we stuck with him through his situation.

  • BackWhenOUBoysCabbagePatched says:

Uh oh. Stoops said that Parrish Cobb had a minor muscle pull and has been out the past day. Kid must have Zika.

    • Maverick says:

Hmmmm, I had heard Fr Jordan Parker had been out as well, but it could be mistaken identity by my source. That or they’ve both missed time.

  • ALar03 says:

Ya know we kinda just let it go that a Sooner Squad 17 member silently committed and I have yet to fully understand who it is… lol My patience is wearing thin!

    • Hotrod33 says:

This coaching staff will figure out what to do.

    • BackWhenOUBoysCabbagePatched says:

I think this kid has the talent to be third in the rotation this year.

      • Jesse says:

Dont overlook Anderson. But when Mixon and Perine are gone, OU will still have a nasty one two punch and that’s for certain

        • BackWhenOUBoysCabbagePatched says:

Not overlooking Anderson, or Brooks for that matter. Anderson sounds like the real deal, I just see an upside to Double A that I have not seen out of Anderson. That said, having the talent to being third in the rotation is not the same as winning the 3rd slot. Going to be fun.

          • Jesse says:

Understandable. I could see Adams getting carries this year for sure. Especially because he’s such a different style of running back than the other 3. I hope there’s a package for Brooks too kid has worked so hard.

          • BackWhenOUBoysCabbagePatched says:

Agree re Brooks. Exemplifies OU to the fullest.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

            Anderson’s been injured. LOL.

          • Katyboomer says:

watched Anderson all his HS days ( son is good friends with him, great young man) He will be great once its his turn . We played teams here in Texas that were top notch and loaded the box with 9 or 10 players at times. Even with that they could not stop him. I think he should be out with SP and JM in the diamond formation.

          • Jesse says:

No lie I thought about this a couple weeks ago… How insane that would be with those three in the diamond. Wow.

          • Katyboomer says:

Plus they said Mixon is 235lbs today in the presser, boy is getting big I think SP is 235 plus too. I think Anderson is around 228 last I heard. That’s some speed and Power.

          • BackWhenOUBoysCabbagePatched says:

Wonder if the Diamond is in Lincoln’s playbook. Did we run it at all last year? Even if not, it would be a great change-of-pace formation with our RB talent.

          • Katyboomer says:

Now that you bring it up, I think you are correct, I don’t think we ever did run the diamond last year. I think we have the backfield to run it this year fore-sure.

          • Coach JK says:

Anderson is the real deal. don’t be fooled, he can carryon the mail!!!!

          • BackWhenOUBoysCabbagePatched says:

            Outstanding!

        • Mark_in_VA says:

Yup. Way I see it, as of now, Anderson and Adams step up to fill the Perine and Mixon roles.

    • Maverick says:

The cupboard is stocked, and they’re all slightly different. I wouldn’t be a bit surprised to see Abdul have a package of plays on Offense and feature on ST.

      Can’t coach speed/elusiveness.

  • Matt says:

Saw that Mark Andrews recently ran a 4.62 after weighing in at 250. That’s big time.

  • KJ1123 says:

Sounds like Samias switch to guard is all but official. Was the starter today at guard with Evans at RT.

    • Scott says:

Do you like Samia at Guard or Right Tackle?

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

I know the question is for KJ1123, but perhaps it is a case of liking Evans and Samia rather than Samia and another guard no?

        • Bob Edwards says:

This is the answer regarding OL. It’s more about the five players that function the best as a unit and less about getting the five best athletes on the field. In engineering it’s called the suboptimization problem. You don’t necessarily optimize a system by optimizing each of its parts separately.

      • KJ1123 says:

Tackle, but I like him at guard better than the options we have. Only thing I worry about is game experience for Evans. Last year we had Akron, thats a really good “get your feet wet” game. Houstons a contender, whole diff ballgame. Id like to have the most experienced guys in.

        • D Hunter Sanchez says:

But as you know, if the less experienced tackle is just plain better you have to go with the talent rather than experience. No? The good thing is that RT isn’t Baker’s blind side and we can run left all day if needed. But, I do see your point. God forbid, remember in 09 against BYU? We started new people and a delayed LB blitz ruined our NO 1 ranking.

          • Spitting Bull says:

Yep D Hunter, I believe we saw that last year especially against Texas. Didn’t see St. John much after that.

        • Scott says:

Hopefully someone steps up at that RG position. I have complete trust that Coach B will get everything ready for game 1.

        • Defend Colfax says:

That 2015 Akron squad had a fairly stout front 7. I wouldn’t put Houston in a class above. They’re coming but Houston isn’t there yet. They’ll come to play but if we show up too, the announcers will be talking about the disparities between the programs and giving Herman props for what he is “building” and we’ll see Austin Kendall.

        • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Evans went to Allen and played at the highest level in high school football. Kid will be fine 🙂 he knows what it takes to win big games and I personally love the idea of Samia playing inside.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

I don’t know why Texas over us? Bigger school? I think we should crush them this year to show Hollywood that he needs to play with the big dogs.

    • KJ1123 says:

Hes going there, unless they totally screw the pooch this year.

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

        Why Texas?

        • RBear says:

          the age-old question

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Are they going to out recruit us again?

          • Jdizzle says:

Believe it or not, the University of Texas brand is just a TEENY TINY bit bigger than OU is Texas and with Texas players. If a kid has been a fan of Texas his whole life, grew up there, who are you to knock him? OU has the same effect on some kids in Texas, just not as many, because, and this is just freaking wild, the kids are FROM TEXAS! If you don’t get why Texas kids want to go to Texas, then I am afraid you are delusional.

          • Defend Colfax says:

He knows this, he just hates Texas…. Because Texas sucks.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Don’t make it out like I personally attacked Wilson. All I asked was why would he go to Texas over OU given the recent history? Remember it wasn’t too long ago that we got the top three players in the whole state to come to Norman. In addition, we have a better class than they do at this time and have a lot of Texas kids. So, I think my question is a legitimate one.

I know Austin is a nice town and Texas has a larger enrollment. BUT…as for football, OU is above them at this time.

        • KJ1123 says:

Friends, family, was his favorite team growing up, etc. But if Chuck is gone this year it may be a different story. LSU may his second school but us winning will help.

        • soonerSD says:

I believe he grew up a UT fan. I know how influential Sooner family/friends are growing up in OK … it’s the same way in Texas

        • soonerSD says:

this ^^^ … and then we can say “come join us…. or get a RRR beat down every year”

      • SamSooner says:

KJ, you’re always in the know.

    • SamSooner says:

      Hey, RBear.

      How have you been?

      That was posted yesterday. Disgusting.

We need McCoy to get back in his ear.

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Sickening. I don’t care if people think Texas being good helps OU. I don’t think it’s true (ex 2015) and I would love to see them go 0-11.

      • RBear says:

yeah, figured it may have been but wasn’t sure… doing ok, trying to stay in the AC when possible. If texsa tanks again this year, we may still have a shot

        • SamSooner says:

I hope the good guys plan on avenging last year’s lost. I want a thorough beat down.

          • RBear says:

we looked inept in that game… no way they should have won but they did… not happening this year

          • SamSooner says:

            I’ll allow it.

          • Scott says:

I love how texsa fans talk about how they completely dominated OU but only won by a touchdown.

          • RBear says:

i was there, we played like poo

          • Scott says:

          • KJ1123 says:

We did. Baker was a little frustrating too, tackling, blocking everything, COACHING. That day sucked.

            lost it on both LOS

          • KJ1123 says:

          • KJ1123 says:

Its to expected though. When we had the down year you know how many times that bama game came up? It was almost a joke. This off season you haven’t heard it once. Texsa has the 15 RRS to hang their hat on for a couple more months. Then we shall see.

          • Scott says:

Their is one thing i have noticed and that is Texsa fans are putting so many expectations on their freshman QB. They’ve already compared Shane to Colt McCoy , also Coach Strong is relying on Shane to possibly save his job. Their has been so much Sunshine pumping around their new QB , their new offense, and their defense.

          • Scott says:

This team will be ready for texsa. Texsa doesnt have that brotherhood mentality that OU has. People dont understand how motivated this team and coaching staff are.

          • SamSooner says:

Scott, I agree. I can hear it in all of their interviews.

          • Scott says:

So many people are calling this team overrated , also this program never gets any respect what so ever.

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Makes me furious. The ESPN reporters the other day just basically said we are by far the most overrated team in the coaches poll and claimed we have an extremely easy Schedule lol. Am I missing something? Lol

    • hOUligan says:

Another high character guy being recruited by Bob and his staff. Cannot help but notice how well spoken and thoughtful this young man is. Would love to have him representing OU as a student as well as an athlete.

    • Defend Colfax says:

Bob is looking a little more spry as well. I know the hip surgery had to help but he has some of that swag he had coming in early on. Bob is still pretty young but he’s got 9 conference titles. 9 is not a small number, that is rare air.

      • Scott says:

I think we will see some more Natty’s before he retires.

        • Jesse says:

I really hope you’re right. This years squad has a great opportunity. Block out the media noise and focus on what is in front of them and it could definitely happen this year. Think about the 17 and 18 classes we’d pull in (as if they weren’t already stacked to this point lol)

      • Scott says:

I think we will see some more Natty’s before he retires.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

And people still want to bash Bob Stoops. 🙂

I know we all wish we had 1-2 more NC’s over that time, but Bob’s consistency with this program, and that is consistency at a pretty high level, has been nothing short of amazing. And that 20 years includes a few lean years before Bob even got to OU. Would love to see that stat for the last 16-17 years.

      • SamSooner says:

Stoops has taken his team there four times and should have won two more. SC was better that year. But LSU and UF were missed opportunities.

His success, without national titles, reminds me of Osborne and Bowden: they had it tough, coming close, but when they broke through, they won a few.

    • Mike Reed says:

OU is 2nd on that list….5 wins behind Ohio State. That’s pretty good!! It’s even better when you think that only 17 years are with Stoops (179-46) and the other three years were with John Blake, who had a miserable record of 12-22. Had he won just 2 more games each year OU would be in 1st place.

  • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

I know it’s not that big of a deal but I’m glad coach Stoops said they will be scrimmaging more so than ever these next 4 weeks. I know it’s a greater chance for injury, but I truly believe that scrimmages are the most valuable kind of practice ( outside of film study ) and it’s going to be vital for us to be ready to go. I really hope Mykel can see some action this season. The coaches are raving about him. He certainly looks the part and if he has hands? I’ll take it lol.

    • SoonerinLondon says:

I think it is a big deal and think you are right to be glad. Teams play like they practice and they can’t be good tacklers or comfortable with the speed of the game without practicing it.

I hope the scrimmage and hope they go to the ground.

If this tweet is gone, it probably means Tony Casilllas sobered up and deleted it.
If tweet doesn’t get deleted, then I will assume Tony is either jealous that OU let “The Boz” talk to the team or he is still butthurt Oklahoma did not want him for defensive line coach.

    • BackWhenOUBoysCabbagePatched says:

Amazingly, he has added to it. The perils of tweeting drunk.

    • Matt S. says:

It’s gone this morning. That dude seems to have some issues.

    • Jordan Esco says:

Was this guy a great, great player for OU? Yes.
Has he since then turned into a bitter, miserable old man? Also yes.

Please stop giving him the attention he so desperately needs that he’s willing to continually trash the school where he made a name for himself.

    • Zack says:

It’s got to be something to do with Boz. He seems to say even dumber stuff when Boz is in the spotlight. Maybe he could learn a thing or two from Boz about redemption.

    • Farmer Glickstein says:

Not only the tweet, he deleted his entire account!

  • SoonerMagic76 says:

    • SamSooner says:

I’m not positive OU will get him after Super K’s post the other day. If texsa is where he wants to be, that’s his choice: I get it. Strong must be using snake oil, again.

247 has Rogers a SC lean, while Watts is 100% OU.

I think it all comes down to performance on the field. We can worry about who we’re not getting and lose sight of what we have. This team is deep at DL and will be set for a few years.

    • Dick Bump says:

It’s a ways to February. I’m sure we’ll see a lot of speculation before then. I think Thibs will have even more impact as the season gets going.

    • SoonerMagic76 says:

Always excellent to hear true freshmen are doing well!

      • SamSooner says:

        Yep, you’re right, Magic.

I hate to think about what this team is going to be like on offense. If we can get great DL play, a regular push to collapse the pocket, that will break a team mentally. We will probably see more disparity in points than we’ve seen in a long time.

Coach Riley after locking down the 2018 class leader. Welcome to the family Mr. Rising.

  • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Just watched risings film and good lord the kid can play some football. His throwing motion looks as if he “pushes” the football, but that’s literally my only concern. Loved the fact the kid has no problem throwing over the middle of the field ( wish baker would do that more ) and his size is real nice. QB is starting to become the RB spot for us with coach Riley recruiting for us. I know people think he’s taking the first decent coaching job available but I just don’t see it. He knows he needs at least 3-4 seasons at a big time program and with his recruiting of kids in the 18 class only proves that he ain’t going nowhere! Boomer freaking Sooner! If we make the playoffs again then that 18 class with be even more stacked than this 17 class is. Man it’s great being a Sooner.

    • Mark_in_VA says:

You know, another guy named Heupel had that push-throw motion, and he did pretty darn well for us. May Cameron exceed even Heup’s success for us!

      • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

I mean I couldn’t care less how he looks when throwing the ball if he’s leading us to more Nattys lol.

        • Mark_in_VA says:

Exactly! And I was just pointing out that because the first thing I thought when watching his hudl was, “Wow, that looks just like the way Heupel threw it!”

    • KJ1123 says:

Dude hes way advanced for that level.

      • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Yeah. I also loved his deceptive athleticism and the fact this early on in his career he is still a pocket passer who also has the wheels to torch you, but he doesn’t rely on them solely.

        • KJ1123 says:

Where hes placing the ball too….there are some pro qbs that cant place it better than that.

          • DCinAZ says:

That’s why he only has 1 INT. Nobody else can catch the ball but his intended target.

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

He trusts his receivers to make the plays because he knows he’s going to deliver a dime and Boom! Perfect strike! Lol.

      • DCinAZ says:

Waaaaaaaaaaaaay advanced. He just completed his sophomore year in High School and he’s already a field general.

    • T. Rob says:

I agree. None of them are leaving until they win a natty with the awesome group of talent they’re collecting up there in Norman.

      • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

I mean Riley will want to coach the kids he recruited at least one year lol. It just doesn’t make sense to me him leaving even after this season if it’s a success.

        • Scott says:

I dont think he would leave just yet. I feel like once Stoops retires the reigns will be given to Riley.

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Honestly man I’m not even thinking about when stoops retires. That’s not going to be for a while and I’m not a fan of the ” head coach in waiting” so we’ll see. I think Riley could make a fine HC but he’s got plenty to learn and I think he’s smart enough to realize that which is why he will be with us another 2-3 seasons, if not more.

    • Drew says:

What I’m wondering is why he’s classified as a PRO style QB and not a duel-threat. He runs a 4.6 40, and his film has him outside the pocket more than inside. The kid can really scoot.

      • BackWhenOUBoysCabbagePatched says:

I had the same observation. Kid has nice scoots.

      • nrising7 says:

He is a Pro style that can run. His coaches do a great job of teaching him to run only when necessary since running QB’s means NFL – Not For Long – unless of course you have the size of Cam Newton. With his brother at 6’5 300 lbs and an uncle at 6’11”, no telling how big Cameron gets. My guess is 6’4 or 6’5 and 225 lbs. We will know soon enough.

        • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

How tall are you? If he got to 6’4 or 6’5 I would be doing back flips! Even if he stays the same height it’s a pleasure to have your son become a part of the Sooner family.

    • Boom says:

That’s not a push. Today’s passing is about quick release which he has based on this motion. Ground up he is solid and has quick hips. He does a good job of rolling out and disconnecting his upper body to his lower body. He’s leaving the pocket a little early but that’s normal. Early in the film, he drifted to his left and knew he was going to get drilled and still made a good throw as he got lit up. To be a good QB, you have to be tough. The beauty, he’s only going to get a lot better. Watch for him in next years Elite 11.

  • KJ1123 says:

    Boom!!

  • OUknowitscomin says:

Where is the BOOM for Rising?
    BOOM!

  • KJ1123 says:

    Jordan hungover lol

  • Jesse says:

Quick question. Rankings are trash, I understand. But how come scout has Rising in the top 50 and 247 has him in the 200’s

    • T. Rob says:

Maybe he performed better at one camp than the other. In the end it’s just press scouts opinions, not coaches.

    • KJ1123 says:

My experience with the ranking sites is I feel scout is generous with their rankings. Rivals is slow with their rankings. 247 is subjective with their rankings. And ESPN ranks hard AND is subjective.

      • Matt says:

I’m fairly certain Scout bases a huge part of their ranking on the number of offers a kid has. If you look at rankbyoffers.com, their rankings follow Scout’s pretty closely. For instance, they have A. Hines as #1 overall and Scout is the only one that even has him as a 5 star. I’m sure they all take offers into account on some level but Scout seems to really depend on them.

      • nrising7 says:

I think you are absolutely correct! The ability to help build the 2018 class was a factor in committing now! Should be an elite class, hopefully!

        • nrising7 says:

Wait a minute!!!! Just realized that I failed to acknowledge the significance of Brey Walker and how important it was for him to be committed. I’ve been telling Cameron that Brey is a once in a decade type OT. He is gonna be legendary!

Thanks for the welcome! We are honored to be a part of the Sooner family and all of its tradition. Yes, my uncle (Cam’s great uncle) lives in Ada and has a beach home at Lake Texoma. We had a blast during our visit.

          • nrising7 says:

I’ve heard that Ada HS was a state power at one time but has fallen off a bit recently.

          • Zach Chaney says:

Yes they call it the mcbroom curse( the mcbroom family has been in the football program for a long time) i believe it has to do with the fact that we didnt start football till 7th grade. Some kid was paralyzed or something so they did away with peewee. I had to go to a school about 15 miles away to play 5th and 6th grade. So Anyway (channeling my inner bob stoops) our new coach wade standley is starting to get the 5th and 6th graders going again.

How is the overall talent level in the district Cameron plays in? There has to be a gazillion different districts/classes/etc in the LA area. Does Cameron play against a lot of kids with D1 offers? His film is amazing, by the way. I’m really impressed with his mechanics and accuracy… hard to believe I’m watching a sophomore!

      • nrising7 says:

California implemented a new playoff and rankings system this year. Teams are placed in Divisions based on past 2 years performance. D1 is the top league and includes St John Bosco, Corona Centennial, Mater Dei, LB Poly, etc. We are in D3 with some very good teams. We play Oaks Christian (D2), Westlake (D2) and Calabasas. Oaks Christian is ranked #10 in the nation and Calabasas is #24 in the nation. Last year, Camarillo was in our league and lost in the state championship after winning the CIF southern section title. Calabasas is loaded and is in our league. They have Darnay Holmes (5 star #1 CB for 2017), Keyshawn Johnson, Jr. (Nebraska WR commit), Tristan Gebbia (Nebraska QB 2017 commit) and Brendan Radley-Hiles (4 star 2018 CB and Top 100). Great football in our area!

        • nrising7 says:

Oaks Christian has the nations #2 rated 2018 QB in Matt Corral (USC) and the #1 2018 TE in the country in Colby Parkinson (Stanford commit). There are 10-13 Divisions overall, we are D3.

Could we borrow a few for a couple of games?

      • KJ1123 says:

Maybe a couple of recruiting visits.

        • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Question is there an issue with Thib’s recruiting skill? I know we are on our 4th DL coach in four years. Is this the issue? Do the coaches feel that not having DT commit at this time any issue?

          • Sooner Ray says:

Hunter, I’m not an interior guy but I’ll share my opinion if it’s ok. I think the turnover has been a mild problem but right now I think it’s an issue of “we too deep”. It’s not like we’re running the 5-2 defense out there. I expect the D line recruiting to pick up after this season.

          • KJ1123 says:

I agree with the turnover. B is just NOW starting to get the line that hes wanted to put together. I think were still one piece away from really being a dominant OL. But B is going on his what 5th year? Need some stability at that coaching spot (DL)

          • Sooner Ray says:

I agree with you KJ but I think Hunter’s concern is the lack of a big time D lineman coming in. Or maybe I’m the one getting confused here. Lol.

          • Sooner Ray says:

Re-read your post (maybe you edited) what you were saying makes sense now. 🙂

          • KJ1123 says:

Probably because im half asleep. And still reading TFB.

          • Matt says:

I’m guessing thats the weakness at one of the guard spots you were referring to the other day? Hopefully the skill guys will make up for that early in the season and they can just develop over the course of the season.

Still weird to me his Twitter account says he’s the DL coach at OU. He seems to be tweeting OU stuff all the time
