OU Football Practice Notes 8.14.15 (Corrected Fri. 2:45 pm)

Quarterbacks: I know everyone is understandably VERY interested in the quarterback competition, so let’s begin with my notes on that:

– While most have assumed it’s only a matter of time before Baker Mayfield is named the starter, earlier this week I mentioned that Cody Thomas has legitimately asserted himself into this competition. And that all three guys are legit contenders to eventually win the spot.

– I am told that early in fall camp, the competition really was strictly between Mayfield and Trevor Knight. At the time, a source shared with me they felt it really could go either way. However, I have since been told that this past week Cody Thomas had been playing at a very high level.

– Was told Thomas has been the best quarterback the past 3-to-4 days, and I have multiple sources saying that right now (again, key words) the battle seems to be more so between Thomas and Knight.

– I’m told at times Mayfield makes some absolutely incredible plays. He scrambles around, gets himself out of trouble, and has the ability to give you those highlight reel moments. But again, I’m told that he’s also very risky with the football.

– Source told me that Mayfield rolled out of the pocket yesterday, had nothing open, and forced a throw that led to a “horrible interception.”

– However as I’ve been cautioned and have shared with you many times, this thing changes almost daily (as you would expect with any fluid QB competition). Which is to say it’s certainly far too early to say any one of the three has been written off in terms of the competition.

– One source really praised Thomas talking about his height and arm strength being advantages for him in this competition. I’m told that while Mayfield and Knight may occasionally have balls batted down and/or tipped at the line, Thomas “almost never has a ball batted.”

LET ME BE CLEAR: I am not making, and have never made, a prediction on who will or won’t be named the starting quarterback. In fact, all I’ve ever done thus far is report where things currently stand based on the sources I have.

And based on reports from multiple sources, who attend practice regularly, it’s obvious this is a legitimate competition between all three quarterbacks. As it stands today, the impression I have been given is that Mayfield is not the clear QB1 favorite as has been widely theorized by many.

Additional Notes:

– One of our regular posters mentioned in the comments the other day that true freshman Dru Samia was getting some first team reps ahead of Derek Farniok (thanks for the heads up, btw!). So I checked on that and was told Samia did indeed take the first team reps yesterday.

However, I’ve been told Farniok was having some ankle pain yesterday and the source said this may have been the primary reason for Samia receiving those first team reps. Though it should be noted that Bill Bedenbaugh has praised Samia and at a minimum, it sounds like the true freshman is certainly going to push whomever is ahead of him.

– Was told that another true freshman, Marquise Overton, received a number of first team reps yesterday. However, Matt Romar also sat out yesterday. It doesn’t sound like Romar is suffering from anything serious though. It’s pretty common for guys to get a little dinged up during fall camp and be held out of a practice or two. But as I noted earlier this week, Overton continues to push the veteran guys.

– I tweeted this out yesterday so some of you may have already seen it, but I was also told that AD Miller had a fantastic 35+ yard catch yesterday. Apparently, Thomas threw a beautiful ball and all 6’3″ of Miller climbed the ladder to make the grab. I was told the DB had good coverage, but it was just one of those plays you can’t stop.

– Was also told that Dimitri Flowers had a reception coming across the middle and showed off some great athleticism getting up field quickly picking up another 20 or so yards. Which is exactly what can happen in this offense when you spread things out and get guys in space. You continue to put pressure on a defense to be sound and play with great leverage.

– Apparently Zack Sanchez also sat out yesterday. I asked a source who took the first team reps in his place and was told it was PJ Mbanasor. This is obviously interesting because it would seemingly indicate that, at least for the moment, Mbanasor is third CB behind Sanchez and Jordan Thomas. It’s also interesting because I’ve been told that Mbanasor normally plays right cornerback behind Thomas, but evidently filled in for Sanchez on the left side yesterday.

– One source described the offense as “fun” saying that the ball is distributed to so many different people.

– Source actually said that if any position group has been targeted more than another in recent practices it’s the……TIGHT ENDS!

– A source said that Mark Andrews is a devastating weapon in the red zone and has been ‘targeted frequently.’ Was told by someone that Andrews, “will play on Sundays.”

– Source also praised Connor Knight, who has apparently been receiving a number of second team reps.

– Was also told there are just so many young wide receivers making plays. And was told that although Durron Neal currently runs with the first team, “don’t be surprised if a few of those young guys start taking some of his reps.”

– As mentioned above, I’m told the tight ends are on the field a lot and have been heavily targeted. But I’m also told, and something we’ve mentioned previously, that Lincoln Riley has been putting every kind of personnel group possible out on the field…2 RB sets, 2 TE sets, 4 WR sets, etc.

– Related to the point above, a source said that Riley actually had Joe Mixon line up at one point as an outside WR.

– Perhaps the most interesting note I recently heard from a source was that early in camp, the offense was dominating the defense. But have since been told the defense is really starting to assert themselves. This sounds positive in that it may indicate that Riley’s offense is capable of overwhelming those who don’t have the advantage of practicing against it everyday.

But it may also indicate the defense is improving and perhaps facing so many weapons that (we hope) are being utilized properly has, in part, led to that improvement.

– Have been told the Sooners are expected to practice tomorrow, which may involve something of a more formal scrimmage setting. But we’re still working to confirm the latter.

CORRECTION (Fri., 2:45 pm): Just a quick correction. I’m told that when Sanchez was out yesterday, Jordan Thomas moved over to LCB and Mbanasor took the starting spot at RCB. Also should note that Sanchez was back for yesterday’s evening practice and he practiced today.

  • Super K says:

KJ, thanks for the heads up on Dru Samia!

  • Ryan says:

Taylor McNamara should have stayed…perfect offense for him. Riley would have used him unlike Heupel.

    • Super K says:

Cant’ say whether or not he should or shouldn’t have stayed but I think he would have definitely be utilized more in this offense.

    • Stephen Dale says:

it is often the case for those having left the Sooner program : they left too soon…

    • ND52 says:

He went to USC where they’re (as usual) set at the quarterback position.

  • We are seeing the TEs more because the TEs are basically WRs now. I just think that needs to be clarified. They aren’t playing the typical TE role as much as we have seen in the past. They are flexed. (I imagine that they will play a typical TE role from time to time though — just not as much)

    • Jordan says:

There was a picture OU Football posted on Facebook of Mark Andrews lined up in the traditional tight end position. More often than not they will be flexed, but I would not say it is exclusive.

      • Agreed. Being able to do it is important though because the TE can seal the edge in running plays. I would sure like to see the run game be emphasized even in this type of offense.

        • Jordan says:

I think the run game will be emphasized, mostly because you cannot ignore the talent at running back. However, I think the pass will set up the run much more this year than in years past. The personnel groupings will be a lot to handle, and if the offense is up-tempo, the running game will be effective whether there are 4 WR’s, or even a tight end.

      • Ryan says:

Would Dalton Wood possibly be our best blocking option at tight end like Brody Eldridge was?

        • EasTex says:

I would think Carson Meier. He has been accustomed to that role since high school.

          • Agreed. I hear Meier is a good blocker at this point…or at least maybe better of the two of he and Andrews. Hopefully they continue to work on it.

          • EasTex says:

Meier’s naturally a much thicker body. Great hands, too.
He impressed me in a losing effort in the state championship game.

    • Super K says:

You’re right but it must also be kept in mind that having TE out there regardless of alignment dictates to the defense that they have to stay in their base package because of the threat of an in-line alignment. That’s when you go five wide with Mixon and you get incredible mismatches without a nickel back on the field 🙂

      • You’re saying that the defense has to account for the TE flexing out or lining up along the line, right? Because to me, when a TE is flexed out, it’s just like having another WR out there and it really wouldn’t change much for the defense. However, if the TE lined up along the line and we change formations, then yeah…that could create those different looks that can cause trouble for a defense. And that’s what I’m hoping that we do!

        • Super K says:

Right. It can force the defensive coordinator to keep his base defense in the game because of the threat that they’ll see an in line alignment. Especially when he knows that the offense may not substitute.

          • I know that Riley wants to go faster with this offense. Do you think he will use the no huddle as well? Having Andrews, Perine, Mixon along with Shep and Westbrook out there, we would pretty much be able to do any formation we wanted to.

          • Super K says:

Agree. And yes I suspect they’ll run plenty of no huddle hurry up

  • LLAdamJ7 says:

Awesome notes guys! I think it was Guerin Emig who wrote that in the past most QB starters were announced around August 22nd or so. Feels like there’s still a ways to go in this race, but I’m glad Cody is getting a chance to show what he can do!

    • Scott Moore says:

That would make sense. You would think they absolutely have to by the 29th. A week for game prep. May the best man win and have their practice game translate to Saturdays.

  • Randy says:

Awesome reports… Super K. The offense will move the ball in between the 20 yard lines. Question will be can we score TDs in the RZ and more specifically inside the 10yd line. Super K can you ask your source if they are practicing this it sounds like Andrews is the RZ target but we have to be able to run the ball down there as well.

    • I would like to see 2 TE sets in the RZ with Meier and Andrews. Heck you could throw in trip TE sets and put flowers there as well and play some smashmouth. Any word of that even being possible. Is there a trip TE set in Riley’s playbook?

      • OUWade says:

I love this idea. Similar to the three TE set with Gresham, Finley, and Eldridge. I’d say that Andrews, Meier, and Flowers are probably a better overall receiving group than the former, which would make them very dangerous just because when we run 3 tightends onto the field, the opposing team won’t know if we are sending in a jumbo running set, or going to spread it out with 3 big receivers… of course, the three of them will need to be able to be good receivers as well as good blockers to make that a legitimate threat, but I like the possibility.

  • Also hearing that mixon is out wide is not surprising at all. He and Perine or he and Andrews/Flowers etc can line up in the backfield together, and then he can motion out wherever he wants. We can really do so many different things because Mixon is a WR AND and RB at the same time hahaha.

    • Super K says:

Indeed. And a swiss army knife guy like Flowers tends to be forgotten but in high school (and flashed last yr) he was very natural as an RB/FB and an receiving threat.

      • I see him as a guy who can be VERY effective. The problem is how do you use all of these weapons when you have Perine and Mixon who NEED to get the ball as well?

        • Jed says:

Give ’em something to do and make sure they understand how what they are doing contributes. If they can’t get/accept that then their careers are over anyway.

        • Ryan says:

Riley is a genius and will prove to be one of very few guys around the country who can utilize all the talent he has.

      • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

Mixon used like Percy Harvin = Good.

        Power
        Inside zone
        Outside zone
        Counter trey
        Inverted Veer variations

        Slot WR
        Outside WR

      • Cush Creekmont says:

Yes. Flowers could go from “Diamond” FB to TE with Mixon split out – many, many sets with the same guys. The defenses had better be just as versatile or the BIG play will hit.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

“Cody Thomas is the Greatest Quarterback of All Time” –Super K

But seriously I still think he is the best OU has right now, and maybe his game is catching up to his ability.

    • Bob Edwards says:

There is a sense in which Cody Thomas being the starter is the best situation. Given the built in bias towards guys with experience and time in the system, him overcoming that bias would suggest that he is playing really well.

      • Super K says:

        Good point Bob

      • Soonerfandave84 says:

Yeah, I just remember watching him in pregame reps last year, his throws are accurate and he doesn’t appear to be “straining” to get velocity on them

      • EasTex says:

I remember Coach Riley stating early on that he appreciates and respects what the guys have contributed in the past, but that no longer mattered. It was a fresh start for everyone to show him who was best.
A fair shot and growing confidence makes this a very interesting QB battle.

      • KJ1123 says:

Not that this really means a whole lot right now. But CT is in on alot of reps in the mini scrimmages. Probably the most out of the qbs in my estimation. He’s still my dark horse in this race. First full scrimmage is tomorrow, should have a pretty good idea of who the front runner is going into the last week of camp.

        • Krys Allen says:

KJ, since you seem to have inside info… have you heard the rumor that there will be no Oklahoma drill this year? Seems strange if that is the case.

          • KJ1123 says:

They haven’t had it yet. But nothing has been said that they won’t have it this year. I assume with all the new installs that they have the OD has taken a little bit of a backseat right now, but again nothing has been said to the effect that there won’t be one this year.

    • Super K says:

haha, won’t surprise me if that ends up somewhere on a message board 🙂

    • Tucker says:

I loved his tape coming out of HS. It would be great to see his game translate to the College level.

  • BigJoeBrown says:

This is absolutley amazing Super K…thanks. I am lovin’ hearing this about the Tide-Ends and spreading the ball around the field!

  • Krys Allen says:

So did anyone get a confirmation that there will be no Oklahoma drill at Oklahoma this year?

Also, I like what CT potentially has to offer, just worried that Tenessee might be a little much for him since it is only the second game of the season…. I still predict Knight will start the first part of the season.

  • SoonerBredCD says:

Great stuff guys! I am really getting excited to see this offense! If it is a three-way tie between the quarterbacks, I’m hoping Thomas gets the nod. You can’t teach intangibles.

    • SoonerBredCD says:

Furthermore, after the 2014 season filled with devastating turnovers (the difference between wins and losses), I don’t think we can afford to go with a gunslinger like Mayfield.

      • If Mayfield is STILL making the same mistakes, to me it shows he isn’t learning anything. If you are doing something wrong…then correct it. If you won’t stop doing the same thing over and over, then you have a learning disability. It sounds like he’s too stubborn to correct his issues. I dunno.

      • ND52 says:

If he had the stature and arm strength of say, a Brett Favre, then I think you give him a shot. But he doesn’t so I’m in agreement with you.

  • Brad Warren says:

    Excellent information. Thank you K!

  • Birddawg says:

    “The TIGHT ENDS!”
    My favorite part. Finally!

    • Exiled In Ohio says:

Yeah, but one of my first thoughts was that the TE may keep a 2nd slot (Quick) or a 2nd RB (Mixon).off of the field. There are just so many weapons!

      • Evan says:

Thats a good problem to have!

      • Nate Broadus says:

A great play maker is an asset. A play making Tight End is GOLD. It’s the most lethal weapon an offense can possess. They’re too fast for LB’s, too tall and big for Corners and Safeties, and pretty much give you a damn near guaranteed touchdown in the red zone.

I am giggling like a school girl that OU is using the Tight End again.

        • Scott Moore says:

You just described Gresham. What a beast. I still can’t stand the fact that we couldn’t beat Florida with that team. Even without Demarco.

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Used on occasion to give the D another thing to worry about

    • Stephen Dale says:

good to hear they are , once again, in the game plan…it would be a shame not to utilize the skills of Andrews,Meier, Knight or , for that matter Flowers or Mixon as a flairing TE…………..

    • paganpink says:

As part of many inexplicable things in our offense last year was that they would praise the play of the tight ends like Blake Bell in practice, and then almost completely ignore them during the games even when we desperately needed some sort of spark or productive play. It sounds like that- along with a lot of other concerns- have been addressed thanks to Coach Riley.

  • Exiled In Ohio says:

K, you outdid yourself today! Much thanks!

  • vargo05 says:

I wanna see them run out an offensive set with Andrews, Meier, Mead, Todd and Dahu. Everybody 6’5″ and above.

  • metzker says:

Awesome days ahead great stuff K

  • Fear The Magic says:

Practicing day in and day out against all of the talented weapons we have, Baylors going to look like a pop warner team when we meet them in Waco.

  • EasTex says:

I just had a thought, after pondering all the talent this team has.
Who will be first off the bus?
    Gallimore–Zeus—Farniok—Paul—–?????

  • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

BIAS ALERT: I have thought and posted that Cody’s overall capacity is likely higher than Trevor’s or Baker’s. Perhaps Cody’s learning trajectory is finally increasing at such a rate that he’s developing faster and to a higher level than Trevor or Baker.

Whoever eventually settles as the starter is fine by me. Just win.

And we shouldn’t be worried about who starts the first game.

    • ND52 says:

FWIW, the only one on campus (at the moment) who has any shot at making the pros is Thomas.

      • Nate Broadus says:

At quarterback. That’s what you meant, right?

Because I count more than a handful of guys on this team that look like they’re headed for Sundays.

        • ND52 says:

Oh of course. Thomas’ physical talents alone will warrant a look from the pros. And then of course you have guys like Perine and Shepherd who’ll be on an NFL roster someday in the near future.

    • Stephen Dale says:

      agreed.

    • Cole says:

Maybe he just needed an offense he can play. I believe he ran this in HS? K, am I right?
Also maybe the coaching is come from a totally different perspective than heupel. Who knows. All in all I could care less who is the QB as long as they win. Isn’t that what you want? A win.

    • Sooner 76 says:

I think that’s true as a true pro-style QB. Trevor’s advantage is that he’s a great runner. So Trevor has the most upside if you want to run zone read with your spread, as long as he takes care of the ball. Cody has the most upside as a pure passer if they cure his poor mechanics from last year. IMO, it’s easier to cure the mechancis than the decision making, but I’ve never coached QBs.

    • Nate Broadus says:

It sounds like Cody is getting back to where he was when he came to OU.

Anyone who followed his recruitment could see, this dude was made to run an Air Raid. We recruited him because he could run well enough and still throw, but this dude was meant to direct a passing offense.

You might as well wipe that slate clean and reset to 0 — this is the first time Cody Thomas is getting the chance to run an offense his game was meant for, and if he wins the job, I won’t be surprised if he shocks some people.

    • Eli Kalika says:

It was so strange watching him struggle in game action. Like he had forgotten how to throw. Based on purely high school film, ceiling is through the roof.

  • mizzOUstu702 says:

Would encourage everyone to watch this video and see how Riley utilizes his TEs. Bryce Williams (ECU) is very similar to Mark Andrews in stature: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGZVKLiIxQ8

One play in particular at about the 5:20 mark is just awesome. Basically an OT lined out wide right, TE hand in the dirt on the left side of the line (where a LT normally is), streaks up field and is wide open because the defense has no clue what to do. Very Leach-Ninja-esque.

    • Wilson says:

Thanks for the video. Note: that was SEC and ACC talent they were carving up. Offense was described as “relentless”.
I’m a defensive guy, but I am excited about this new offensive potential. Let’s Git er done…

    • Cush Creekmont says:

Yes. It appears if the D lines up a little “funny” the TE has no one near him for 10 yards. I can see Mixon in motion taking LBs away and nobody can take the TE

    • Defend Colfax says:

The funny thing about it is all 3 QBs on campus have a better skill set than Carden. That dude’s arm is soup, but everyone is open. He averaged about 30tds/10ints a year. I don’t think the three on campus have 30 tds combined. But in this offense the QBs, while racking up the stats, take a backseat, distribute the ball and let the playmakers make plays.
I like all of the current QBs I think all bring a certain dynamic and edge to the team. Trevor can run the Zone Read better than people think and is a great leader, Baker throws a catchable ball and has that attitude that gives the whole offense a fire. Last but not least is young Cody Thomas ex-multisport athlete built like Sam Bradford cut from the same cool. You need that cool guy back there taking the game as it comes to him, in this offense there should be plenty to take.
Move the chains and wait for the touchdown. I see Cody as the guy more often than not take the cushion and rush for 7 instead of trying to force it into the zone. We need whomever can be that guy. Ironic because combined with his skill set and brand new starting left and right tackles a southpaw Josh Heupel would be a great choice at QB for this team.

  • OUknowitscomin says:

Good to hear O opening things up, as expected. Love hearing D stepping up now. Shouldn’t be a huge surprise the D struggled so badly last year facing Baylor/TCU type O’s. When all they practiced against was our O that was so 1dimensional.
Facing this year’s O all camp should benefit them greatly, iron sharpens iron.
Caveat: any D is going to give up big yards to those types of O’s, perfect illustration is Mich St D in bowl game. They had one of best D’s. But when an O like that isn’t executing perfectly, you need to be able to take advantage of those opportunities. We couldn’t even do that.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Most likely combo scheme and mismatches. Julian W and the safeties just sucked against Baylor.

  • Zack says:

So stanvon to WR…how long before the inevitable?

    • Fear The Magic says:

I think Stanvon would make a better WR than DB but the fact of the matter is we;’re way deeper at WR so more than likely at least for now he’ll stay put.

The unequivocal sentiment across the board on Riley’s hire of was one of smartness. Put all that stuff about the air raid aside for a moment and you get the sense that the man clearly has a direction that makes the best use of his weapons *AND* and puts the players in a position to succeed. Not many have the ability to do both. I feel like we are on the verge of greatness.

“– Source actually said that if any position group has been targeted more than another in recent practices it’s the……TIGHT ENDS!”
How about a NSFW warning? I hurt myself when I fell backwards in my chair. 🙂

    • Fear The Magic says:

Do we have any offers going out to TEs this year? Thats the one position I havent heard anything about.

      • William Ryan says:

Zero offers…..which isn’t a bad thing based on the youth and potential at the position

        • Fear The Magic says:

Youth and potential yes. Depth no. Unless they’re thinking of making Dalton Wood a Hback/ TE

          • William Ryan says:

That’s what the plan was when he committed, with him Andrews and Meier I think we will be fine.

          • Nate Broadus says:

            Agreed with William Ryan.

I always figured Dalton Wood was going to end up at TE. Now that he is actually on campus, that is most likely where he will end up.

        • Sooner 76 says:

We’ll have 4 this year, with walkon Connor Knight as a RS Jr, two RS freshmen (Andrews and Meier), and a true freshman (Wood). Plus you have Flowers, who is only a sophomore.

          • Bob Edwards says:

That’s four schollies (I think Knight’s a walk on) for what is essentially one position. That’s about all you can take before you take from somewhere else.

          • William Ryan says:

That’s what I said earlier I think where going to be fine at that position for a few years

  • westel3 says:

Could you see Mixon being used similar this season to how Oregon used DeAnthony Thomas?

    • ND52 says:

I would say he’s more versatile given that he’s not tiny like Thomas was.

    • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

      Percy Harvin, IMO.

      • soonersd says:

I like the comparison and loved how UF used him in their offense but I feel like Mixon has a few inches in height on Harvin, no? They could still be used the same, nonetheless. Harvin is blazing fast though… I do hope Mixon has that kind of speed.

        • soonersd says:

From a quick search (I understand they may be somewhat inaccurate) Mixon is 2 inches taller and weighs 30lbs more. Once again, I do like the idea of them being used the same but that size and weight advantage could create more mismatches when split out wide. Would guess that Joe packs a little more power with the weight and Harvin could probably take him in the pure speed department.

Getting really excited about what our offense has a chance to become if these coaches and players get on the same page and develop!

          • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

            Joe is bigger, that’s correct.

The idea I’m working with is using Joe in many ways like Percy was used. Percy ran between the tackles (counter), outside the tackles (sweeps; Melvin Gordon did this, too, if I recall), in the slot, and out wide.

  • Matt says:

Is the 4-2-5 Defense with a standup DE they’re running this year basically what they ran in 2013? The 2013 D was pretty good IMO just weak against inside run.

    • James Paul says:

And with improved linebackers compared to 2013, I would imagine they will hold up better versus the run.

    • Sooner 76 says:

No, it’s not the same. That was a 2-gap defense. They played two true DEs and a NT. This D has a 3-technique DT playing next to the standup DE on the weak side and a SDE on the other side.

      • William Ryan says:

So in theory it’s going to look the same with exception of a 3 tech DT instead of a de weakside?

        • Sooner 76 says:

Except that the OLBer (Striker) will be on the LOS and not behind it. And will normally be on the weak side, versus the old eagle defense (4-3-4) where the SAM was on the LOS.

So it might appear the same, but will be executed differently.

  • SoonerfanTU says:

You guys really need to quit suggesting most fans STILL think Mayfield leads this thing. I doubt many at all think that as this point. 🙂

I too think it’s probably down to TK and CT. Mayfield missing time and being INT prone ruins his chance of winning this race, I would imagine.

    • soonerthunder says:

I’ve been nothing but QBs all my life, numerous, numerous camps, coaches, played it, son played it, cousins played QB, etc. Family friends with David Ash (stay at his parents’ house sometimes monthly, know them VERY well, siblings, parents, cousins, uncles/aunts, etc) and his family and friends w/family of David Webb. My son and Sam Bradford friends for years. Know numerous QBs and their families, QB coaches at all levels including NFL, etc. I don’t know any of the QBs at OU, but have talked to TK some and love everything about him. I have no idea what “most fans” think, but I’ve been around QBs my whole life, and I’m still betting on Mayfield, unless there is something more serious with his arm (I don’t think so personally). I’d rate TK 2nd, and Thomas 3rd. Close, closer than last year, IMO, but still I go with that order unless something is more serious than I think w/Mayfield’s arm. Haven’t been to any practices, mind you, but from games (including spring game) I’ve seen all three in, watching nothing but them, to me Mayfield has the “it” factor the other two don’t have. Plus, I think he’s more accurate than the other two, and makes good decisions better than them. He may make bad decisions, too, but I think he makes good decisions better than the other two.

      • Sooner4life says:

I agree with some of the things but its hard to count out CT for the “It” factor just yet. Three games and a spring seem very little evidence especially with the scenario he was in (no shep). It just sounds like CT has progressed well which is exciting and like many have said on here I trust to coaches and believe they will put the best qb out there. Also I remember an interview from Riley a few weeks back how during a qb race that someone almost always separates themselves and rarely do you see it close once the first game comes around. I still believe its open between the three and hopefully in two weeks someone has made that stride.

        • EasTex says:

I look back at CT’s first action in the KSt game when TK was hurt. CT just came in and took the offense down the field for a score. He was thrust in with little prep and just played ball. It is the late season CT we saw that got all the prep and over-thinking that gave him the yips.
If he is just allowed to perform I believe we see an entirely different CT.

          • soonerthunder says:

I agree with you on seeing an entirely different CT if allowed the starting spot. He’ll be better than we’ve seen. I just think Mayfield b/c I think he completes the most passes and is the most accurate. JMO, but that’s what I think. I have absolutely NO emotions about this or vested interest in it at all, nor do I care who starts, it’s just what I think when I’ve seen the three. I also think CT runs better than I expected when he has to a little. He’s not like TK, but he runs okay for what can help at times. TK, if he plays, will be allowed to run more, IMO, or should, b/c now we have 2 others QBs and don’t have to hold him back.

          • Scott Moore says:

Well put. Lets hope so. If the game slows down for him he’ll be potent.

        • soonerthunder says:

I wouldn’t count CT out for the “it” factor either, I guess I’m comparing it more in my eyes to CT and TK. Very true on the no shep observation too, but even with shep I think they just planned to run more and not give him too much of a chance to fail. Plus, they didn’t have anyone behind him (Bell I guess) so they couldn’t let him get hurt. I would say from what I’ve seen it’s something like this: 1A Mayfield, 1B TK and 1C CT. Mind you, it’s just my opinion. We’ll see, but as you said, I don’t have tons of evidence to work with, just a few games and spring for CT and not a whole lot for Mayfield. But just from what I’ve seen, it’s in that order. I’m not down on TK like some, at all, BTW. I think Mayfield sees the field better and is makes better good decisions than the other two and is more accurate, also. CT has the best arm strength but I think Mayfield will complete the most passes.

Of course Riley is seeing tons of practices and I think he’ll make the best decision. I don’t think he cares what fans think about TK either. I think whoever he picks will be who has had the best practices, no matter what other insiders at practices or outside of practices think. I just think it’ll be Mayfield.

      • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

You don’t know how serious or long-term Baker’s shoulder issue is or might be.

You haven’t seen any practices this year.

You think Baker is more accurate than the other two, a stat we’ve discussed and is only true by the narrowest of margins (for Trevor).

You think Baker makes better decisions than the other two, but also concede that he makes bad decisions.

        Your argument is nearly unintelligible.

        • soonerthunder says:

Ha! I wife has been saying that for over 38 yrs, and many others. I wouldn’t disagree with you b/c I’d be disagreeing with my wife!

I may not have seen practices, but I’ve seen scrimmages (plural) and games (plural) on all three, which are a much better indicator. I imagine all D1 kids can look good in practice. I think I’ve seen a lot more than usually we get to see of 3 QBs.

BTW, I don’t care. It seems you are emotional about this for some reason. If I pulled for anyone, it would be TK, but just don’t think it’ll be him. It doesn’t matter what any of us say, Riley will tell us sometime, so calm down. The main thing is the main thing: the games.

          • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

Clearly not emotional when I’m deconstructing your argument and showing that your premises are kinda flimsy.

      • Boom says:

Curious, if Mayfield doesn’t start, do you think it’s because of a shoulder/arm issue.

        • soonerthunder says:

Yes, that’s what I think. But, like I said, I think his arm will be okay. In the Dallas game the other night they were talking about a QB who got arm fatigue. I think that that is all it is w/Mayfield.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

I think you are going to have to wait and see about all three.

  • SoonerFreak31 says:

Cody Thomas is the more prototypical QB in an offense like this. I don’t care who it is as long as they don’t make stupid plays and it sounds like Mayfield is that guy.

  • Cush Creekmont says:

Late to say it, but THANKS Super K for this info. I’d love to sneak into a tall campus building and put a long lense on the practice field, but I have to work…a hundred miles away at that.

  • KJ1123 says:

All I know is I hope we get some quality RBs in recruiting this year and next. Because Samaje after this year will be NFL ready and Mixon wont be too far behind.

  • Stephen Dale says:

good report …..good to hear some young players are pressing for additional playing time…competition helps develop skills……….

  • Walter Sobcek says:

I just get too excited reading this. Must breathe, must breathe…

  • OceanDescender says:

Spectacular practice notes; I might go run around the block 999 and a half times after reading this!

  • Cole says:

Also hearing Mixon on the putisde reciever spot doesn’t surprise me. He played WR and RB when he was at the opening a few years ago.

  • BoomerDave says:

Hearing Lincoln Riley say he wants to go with just one QB, I imagine it’s got to be a little concerning to him that no one is separating themselves from the pack thus far in camp. When will there be a full-blown scrimmage? That is usually when things start sorting themselves out.

  • metzker says:

Should there be a BOOM for Dalton?

  • metzker says:

    Hmmmm waits

  • Sooner 76 says:

A couple of LBer notes based on the video. Looked like Obo was back at OLBer/standup DE. And it looked like Shannon and Dom were running with the 1s, and the two Evans were running with the 2s at ILBer. Of course, it’s just one day at practice.

    • kokevo says:

Alexander hasn’t practiced in a few day and is walking around in a walking boot. He’s not with the ones right now.

    • William Ryan says:

Obo just isn’t big enough to play a true de position and him, Striker, and bond coming of the edge in our Nascar package shows how effective he is in that role. Not surprised about Shannon at all he is a perfect nickel lb good speed, can bring the wood and doesn’t get caught up in the “wash” which is something the other lbs struggled at times.

      • EasTex says:

I watched the 2013 hunchback leprechaun highlights the other day. Shannon was everywhere on defense, including an interception when Colvin tipped it.

        • Cush Creekmont says:

I LOVE that movie (er, game). Gimme’ some 14-0 at the 1:00 minute in mark just about anytime.

  • Jeff says:

    Thomas, Thomas

  • KJ1123 says:

    Cue: Hammer

  • Nate Broadus says:

Sounds like Mark Andrews is money in the red zone.

  • Jason Vos says:

I still think Mayfield will be the starter. Because he is the most accurate of the 3.

Not the fastest (Trevor Knight), Not the strongest Arm (Cody Thomas). But the most accurate, which I think will always win out when its all said and done.

    • Eli Kalika says:

How do you figure he is the most accurate? That seems like a conclusion that can’t be drawn.

    • EasTex says:

I will concede he is deadly with the shovel pass, after that…

    • Nate Broadus says:

He may be the most accurate when he reins it in a bit.

That trait becomes less dependable if he continues to try and force things.

    • Fear The Magic says:

The problem is that he seems to be the most accurate to the offense and the defense as well.

    • Daddy R says:

I don’t agree that Mayfield is the “most accurate of the 3.” Not at all. They all have their own issues, but to me, from what we’ve seen and heard, its C. Thomas. I think if its a truly fair competition, then Thomas wins it. Height and those batted balls will play a true deciding factor if all these guys are still close in every other area..

    • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

“…the most accurate of the 3.” <—based on increasingly flimsy evidence.

    • pag says:

One “gift” given to the defense can undo many good throws

    • soonerthunder says:

that’s the way I see it too.

  • SamSooner says:

For you Jordan: – LET ME BE CLEAR: I am not making, and have never made, a prediction on who will or won’t be named the starting quarterback. In fact, all I’ve ever done thus far is report where things currently stand based on the sources I have.

And based on reports from multiple sources, who attend practice regularly, it’s obvious this is a legitimate competition between all three quarterbacks. As it stands today, the impression I have been given is that Mayfield is not the clear QB1 favorite as has been widely theorized by many.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSl211MTz3M

  • Daddy R says:

“Related to the point above, a source said that Riley actually had Joe Mixon line up at one point as an outside WR.”

This has me smiling ear to ear. Was hoping to hear/see this..

Not sure if any of yall are runners or walkers but try running/walking to one of your favorite OU games. Seriously. Even if you can’t watch it while doing so listening is still fun haha

No no never DURING OU games. Saturday’s I’m on the couch watching football and I don’t move haha.

        • Daddy R says:

lol, I misread that a bit it seems.. but it was still funny! Never tried to workout to OU games, would make running walking or biking go by a bit faster…maybe, lol

          • Jesse says:

Pretty funny, made me chuckle haha. Only games you really enjoy never a bad game. I tend to listen to the TTU @ OU game from a few years ago. Tends to put a smile on my face

        • Eric Hoffpauir says:

I’m the opposite. Every commercial, I’m trying to use my nervous energy to get some chore done, like washing dishes, folding laundry, something. I also try to tell myself that my getting chores done is positively affecting the outcome of the game, which became harder to do as the Baylor game wore on last year.

      • Bob Edwards says:

Sounds like time for and upgrade in your game watching environment. I suggest a fridge next to the couch.

The only running I’ll do is if I see a walker #thewalkingdead

Im really trying to temper my optimism, but you guys are making it really tough. lol

  • William Ryan says:

No surprise to hear about the strides Cody Thomas has made here of late a new offensive coordinator that runs a qb friendly offense and I know rankings doesn’t matter at the end of the day, but he was recruited by almost every school in the country! With that being said he does possess a cannon and good pocket presence with his size plus it sounds like he’s been keeping the int at minimal.

    • jimintexas says:

Cody gave up baseball this Spring for the first time, I guess ever. He was a RS Freshman, last year, in what some say was a system that could be confusing. Maybe a “light” has come on with the new system. He was successful playing against some pretty good HS competition. There have been some successful QBs with less than perfect delivery. And with full devotion to FB, maybe those types of things can be fixed.

It seems like a bit much to judge the kid in the environment he was working in

      • William Ryan says:

You just made my point I agree he was handcaped based on the offense we was trying to run plus no receivers other than Sheppard….

    • John Garner says:

Didn’t Cody operate in an Air Raid scheme in HS? If so, he’s probably well schooled in the system.

      • EasTex says:

Looks Air Raid to me, he ran this system as the starting QB from his freshman through Senior year in a very tough district. The Southlake Carroll stadium is directly across the street from the Colleyville stadium.
        https://youtu.be/PDLr1VU3BoM

        • Eric Hoffpauir says:

That play when he started to run, slowed up and gunned the ball to a receiver in the end zone, very nice.

        • John Garner says:

Thanx East Tex, and you’re right: it does look like an Air Raid attack. It wouldn’t surprise me if Cody wins the job. In fact, given BM’s risk-taking and TK’s inconsistent performances of last season, I would be very happy if he did.

          • EasTex says:

He was comfortable, in rhythm, saw the field and made excellent accurate throws.
If he can find that frame of mind in this new offense I see no reason why he couldn’t duplicate what he did in high school, he certainly has better athletes around him.

          • John Garner says:

A better O-Line for sure and awesome speed outside. Not too mention the RBs. He has the skills to succeed in such an environment.

          • EasTex says:

Lots of ball control throws, making first downs and moving the chains. Sure sets up the defense for the deep throws.

          • John Garner says:

You just described the Air Raid.

          • EasTex says:

            Why…yes, yes I did. 🙂

          • John Garner says:

            LOL!

        • JD says:

They only neg I see was most passes were pre determined..he was always getting rid of the ball fairly quick…but maybe thats what are O will do and he will read the D before the snap

          • EasTex says:

That is the idea, pre-snap reads. Rhythm and timing are essential.
Notice that when he was blitzed he didn’t panic and got rid of the ball quickly to his safety valve; also the blitzes came up the middle which I expect to see from nearly everyone. It is the fastest, shortest distance to the QB which is why I favor the big boys like Paul at guard.

          • AdamsHall says:

If Cody does this, he has a really good chance of winning this competition.

        • BleedCrimson says:

Thanks ET. I like that he was hitting guys in stride and can make all the throws. Does not seem to have a problem on ins, outs, stop, or go routes.

        • SamSooner says:

Cody put that ball in some pretty tight spaces, over LBs and in front of the secondary. Most of his passes were not easy throws.

  • bmrsnr says:

Heard anything about the oline? Starting to look concerning. Heard Alvarez is ahead of Danley, has he not been as good as expected?

    • Jason Vos says:

Again Trevor Knight in all the promo vids. ;Like a starting QB usually does

      • Zack says:

I hate to base my opinion of him starting on the limited footage that’s out there. But on soonersports it appears he’s front and center any time the qbs are shown. And he appears to be listening to Riley where some of baker mayfield’s shots are him looking disinterested.

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Perhaps. But if he has not improved, you’ll regret the pumping up of Knight. I want a White/Bradford/Jones style QB.

      • Scott Moore says:

I want the guy that is cool and composed during the game. Knight had that at the Sugar but I haven’t seen it too many other times. Bradford was the epitome of cool and calm even with the pocket crashing around him. Would love to see a QB step up with even half that pocket presence.

I still love how we beat them twice that year. I just think it’s perfect.

    • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

Chase Daniel picked a fight with one of the best LBs in recent memory at OU. That was a mistake.

    • Sooner Ray says:

That was a great time but I chuckled a little when you called it “old school”. 🙂

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

No D Murray again and still won. Snake bit. Should have beat Taco Tech. Would have been in line for the 8th title.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

I have always thought that Mayfield is like Daniels. In addition, Knight is like Zac Robinson. Cody? Hopefully Bradford. Fired up for 2015 and the return of OU to the top.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Love the D: Lofton, Beal, McCoy…Franks…

  • Shelby is a Patriot says:

I’m okay with whoever gets the starting QB job, but that’s great to hear about Cody. I really think there’s a lot more in him than what we saw last year and Riley can bring it out of him. Granted, I’m partial to QBs over 6′ 3″.

    • SamSooner says:

I watched Cody’s delivery in the limited video out there. His delivery looks like it has improved. I remember reading the article on him when he committed. There was a lot of talk about what a hard worker he is.

      • Shelby is a Patriot says:

Yup. I know a lot of people would want a play maker at QB, like Trevor and Baker, but I want the guy who makes the best decisions. I think if our WRs are as talented as we hear, than we don’t need a QB who is going to gamble with football more than he needs to.

        • SamSooner says:

You are correct. This is a very talented team. I don’t know if most people are aware of the amount of talent on this team. I think they’re going to surprise a lot of folks. I mean, look at the OL, I’m not concerned. It truly the next man up.

I don’t recall hearing such positive news about our receivers. The young guys are stepping up. I think the real potential is with the DL. If those fellas get salty, real salty, I don’t believe anyone will move the ball on OU.

          • EasTex says:

            I like this team.

          • SamSooner says:

I have a good feeling. It’s nice to have a team where a skill player has to be the difference maker. This whole team is built to last. I’m sticking to it, it’s a National Championship this year.

          • EasTex says:

That is always the goal and no one would be more disappointed if that weren’t the outcome than these players.
The last month of the season looks like it could be a tough stretch, like October of 2000.

          • Shelby is a Patriot says:

Tough stretch? Well that’s just how we like it.

          • EasTex says:

            LOL!
Got to earn it, fo’sho’. You just never know what the attrition rate will be near the end of the season and all the dents and dings from those games hopefully won’t take a toll.

          • SamSooner says:

I remember looking at the 2000 schedule for Red October and thought that it was the best scenario: they couldn’t look ahead of next week. It kept them focused.

          • ND52 says:

            @samsooner:disqus

They couldn’t——they weren’t talented enough to do so unlike the 03′, 04′ and 08′ teams that were.

          • SamSooner says:

            ???

          • ND52 says:

@samsooner:disqus My point being that other Sooner squads that were more talented failed in regards to mental readiness and game preparation when compared to the 2000 squad.

          • SamSooner says:

            Gotcha. Good point.

          • Scott Moore says:

Agreed. Entitlement and complacency can easily set in when success is had.

          • EasTex says:

They were all like…come at me, bro!

          • Shelby is a Patriot says:

It’s still early, but I definitely think this is one of the most talented teams we’ve had in a while.

          • SamSooner says:

I agree with you. Talent everywhere.

          • boomersooner says:

Yeah with crazy eyes in charge of the line, we’re more than good. Diron seems like dad in every way. If you piss him off he might find a switch. With Lincoln in charge of the o, mcconaughey better be looking for a new product to pitch

          • SamSooner says:

So true, my friend. Crazy eyes? Really? I’m LMAO.

          • boomersooner says:

            Remember…from Mr deeds?

          • boomersooner says:

I wonder if he likes his pizza with oreos and gumballs

          • SamSooner says:

I didn’t see that movie. I will have to watch it now.

          • boomersooner says:

            Sandler

Edit : I believe his was a remake

          • SamSooner says:

Oh, boy. Adam Sandler. I will watch it this weekend.

          • SamSooner says:

            Sandler is a nut.

          • SamSooner says:

            Who’s in that movie?

          • Shelby is a Patriot says:

Haha I have a puppy I call Crazy Eyes. She’s got that look…

          • boomersooner says:

            I love it.

I had a few coaches that were just like dad. Loved you unconditionally but just wait til you piss em off

          • SamSooner says:

Yeah, they treated you just like dad.

          • boomersooner says:

Did they ever. The best thing about a coach, when you get to know him…he’ll wear you out when you get it wrong for sure, but the best will either give you a look or let you know when you get it right

          • EasTex says:

            That wasn’t always my experience.
My OL coach in high school was a t**d, he was also our baseball head coach. We did not get along, he would spit a big wad of tobacco juice right where we were going to put our hands just before we got set. I finally called him on it one day in practice and told him I thought he was a disgusting person. I ran gassers for it, but it was better than giving him the satisfaction of knowing I put my hands in his filth.
When I joined the baseball team, I was the best catcher and best hitting catcher he had, but he wouldn’t let me play even in a blow out.
Got my revenge going into my Senior year, when the booster club asked parents of players if he should be elevated to the head coach position after our HC left, we all said Hell No…he didn’t get the job and left in a huff.

          • boomersooner says:

I had some a holes as well. I’m sure they taught me some stuff too but I don’t remember what it was

          • EasTex says:

He taught me to stand up to bullies. 🙂
He couldn’t bench me in football, the HC and OC wouldn’t have allowed it I was the pulling guard in an option roll-out offense and was All-District as a junior.
Baseball he could and did whatever he wanted, he wanted his lackeys on the field not the best players.
Most coaches I dealt with were teachers and you could talk with them, pick their brains and ask questions. They would both praise and scold, not just scowl like that t**d-knocker.

          • boomersooner says:

That’s brutal. People like that always deserve to be put in their place, in life or after

          • EasTex says:

That guy never gave encouragement or praise, only criticism.
My HC, one game we were playing the #1 Catholic team(and 3 straight state champs) in Texas, Houston St. Thomas. They outweighed us 40lbs per man and their MLB was 6’2′ 245…in 1966. I had to fire out and block him, got to him quick with perfect form at waist level. He just ran through me like I wasn’t there.
My HC pulled me and angrily twisted my face mask and told me to do my job. I kept trying, but the guy was too big-fast-strong. He pulled me again and calmly stated he was wrong, I was just over-matched and to keep working. I eventually wore the guy out and we finally started gashing them for good yards between the tackles by the end of the first half.
We beat those big ol’boys, too.

          • SamSooner says:

The worst coach I ever had has a stadium named after him. He was a racist and a bully. My brother was competing for the starting QB spot. He was a sophomore competing against a senior and the competition was tight.

At one time, spring practiced concluded with a game against a neighboring high school. The announcement came on Thursday, right before the scheduled game on Saturday that my brother would start. It was a front page announcement: ” insert my last name to Start.”

Well, we drove an hour to see the game. My brother was hyped and ready to go. I know my brother well: for a sophomore, he was composed and it didn’t surprise me that he didn’t have any jitters before the game.

My brother takes the first snaps: he hands it off to the RB who accepted a scholarship at Georgia Tech. My brother exits the game after one play, never to enter again.

That pissed me off. But that was common in the South. The coach gave into pressure from the boosters. I’ve never said a word to any of those coaches again. Most of them are dead but occasionally I’ll see one when I’m visiting my family.

          • EasTex says:

            Dang.

          • Sooner Ray says:

The coaches I had would be in prison today for the way they “coached”. Man I loved those guys, but my neck still hurts from having my face mask turned 180 degrees. 🙂

        • Jonathan Taylor says:

Another thing a lot of people seem to over look is Thomas ran the read option last year and showed he isn’t a terrible runner in his own right. I’d almost say he ran the option better than TK did last year in some regards. If memory serves I think rivals had him as a 4.5 40 guy coming out of high school and he was a baseball player. I guess what I’m saying is don’t count him out on athleticism.

  • Ouzena says:

Dalton Wood has already went MIA ! This got to be the last straw for Dalton. He will not answer any OU coaches calls or his former high school coaches ,

    • Mike Reed says:

      How do you know this?

    • John Garner says:

OU Football has released a statement that Dalton “never” reported. We need to let this drama go and move on to the debate about who should be at the helm of our new offense.

  • Matt says:

when can we get an idea of the Kicker and Punter situations?

  • SamSooner says:

EasTex, you asked me about Akron the other day.
I just looked at their past three recruiting classes, as rated by Rivals:

    2013: ranked 118 out of 123 (Average * rating 2.11) signed 17 players
    2014: ranked 111 out of 123 ( Average * rating 2.0) signed 12 players
    2015: ranked 116 out of 129 (Average * rating 2.23) signed 13 players
    2016: ranked 116 out of 126 (Average * rating 3.0) currently committed 2 players

  • Jesse says:

I don’t know how to post it but Jordan’s last tweet was hilarious hahaha

  • Mark_in_VA says:

But it may also indicate the defense is improving and perhaps facing so
many weapons that (we hope) are being utilized properly has, in part,
    led to that improvement.

I have always believed that the Sooner defenses that faced our great offences during Stoops’ tenure have used that to tremendous advantage during the season. When our O has been dull and predictable, the biggest effect seems to be the D looking lost, or at least certainly not sharp and smoothering, during games. Hopefully Riley is kicking the D’s butts in practice and as a result we see a much more steely, sharpened defense this season.

    ERROR APPOLIGIES

  • 22dupree says:

K, Any word on how Cody Ford and Joseph Paul are doing so far? Two Louisiana kids with good size. Any reps at G or T for either? And is Erick Wren (walk-on, who played well in the spring game) in the mix at C or G? Thanks!

    • KJ1123 says:

Cody is getting reps at guard. Has taken some reps with the 1s. JoPaul and Wren have not yet but are working in the interior.

  • KJ1123 says:

Wouldnt read too much into it but Farniok and St John have flipped positions. St John is at Rt now. Coach B just trying alot of different combos.

  • JJSoona says:

Regarding the QB competition………when I look at the skilled players around whoever the QB might be, it has to make his job easier. So much talent and a OC who knows how to use the tightend is going to make this offense down right scary. Just get the ball to any one of them and let them make plays. This is gonna be fun.

    • William Ryan says:

It sounds like Thomas has been keeping int at a minimal with his size and arm strength he is a perfect fit for this offence go back and watch his film he’s running a spread and this kid look pretty special.

  • D.j. Occupant says:

    Nobody expects us.

  • D.j. Occupant says:

    Fix the wagon.

    • Brent says:

      I don’t understand this.

      • D.j. Occupant says:

Err…last year wasn’t something to be very proud of to your typical spoiled OU fan like myself. You could say that the schooner was broken as a figurative way of explaining how we all felt. “No more” broken schooner. Fix the wagon. Boomer Sooner.

  • Easy2120 says:

Haha no one has any clue who the starting QB is, or will be. All the conjecture is hilariously funny. Just wait for Akron and we’ll see.
