OU Football Officially Opens 2015 Fall Camp

Image via @OU_Football

As virtually all of you are already aware, OU officially opened fall camp this morning with their first practice as they prepare for the 2015 season. We are expecting hoping to have some actual practice notes for you later today, or possibly tomorrow, but in the meantime we just wanted to throw this up for now to give you all a place to hang out.

As we’ve now been conditioned in recent years, we receive very little in the way of information from OU during camp. But they have been tweeting out some pictures from practice today, so for those of you who may not be on Twitter and/or already seen these.

We’ll also try to continue updating this post as needed, just FYI.

Not a huge surprise necessarily, but top right pic here is late arrival and JUCO transfer Jarvis Baxter already taking part in practice which is obviously a positive.

Can’t wait for Akron. I’m so fired up for this season.

Can’t wait for the Monday after Akron when I can watch the game on youtube.

        LOL!
        That makes bofus.

I’ll spring for it! Come to Yukon, Eastex!

          • EasTex says:

            Thanks, bruh.
Going old school and listening on the radio after the disastrous results from last year’s ppv. Glitchy mess that I only saw half of and what I did see wasn’t even HD.

          • BleedCrimson says:

I agree, but will probably still use the PPV option. Last years PPV was less than impressive.

          • paganpink says:

They don’t use a lot of camera’s and the announcers are unknown folks but it’s still better then Radio. Besides- you’re really kinda NorEasTex, right? LOL. If it wasn’t for construction and maybe traffic in the big D, you could do it in an hour and a half! Let me know anytime.

          • EasTex says:

            DFW, near Addison and Plano.
Appreciate the invite, but I will be going out of town for a Friday night football game which will be about 5 hours round trip. Won’t be too eager to leave the house on Saturday.

          • paganpink says:

You are serious about those HS games aren’t you? Sounds good. I don’t blame you.

          • EasTex says:

High hopes for the home town team this year.

          • JB says:

Remind me again which is the HS alma mater…Marshall, Carthage, other? I think I guessed longview once and if memory serves, that blew over about as well as a fart in church…

          • EasTex says:

            Marshall High, not Stinkview.

          • JB says:

I always liked Addison on OU-Texas weekend, especially for all the restaurants on Belt Line. My sister lives down there andand when our family would come to visit her we had a routine. We’d hit the original Cantina Laredo on Friday night for dinner, choose a random restaurant after the game (Fogo was pretty common) on Saturday. Sunday, we’d have breakfast at the Original Pancake Haus (sourdough banana pancakes for me, everyone else got the apple pancake), usually an hour minimum wait.

That was when she lived in Flower Mound, then Lantana. Now she lives in North Dallas off Walnut Hill Ln for the past 5 years, so we have a new restaurant tradition. It’s still one of my favorite weekends of the year if not the favorite. Always a blast, especially when OU annihilates texass

          • EasTex says:

I know all those places. Off of Walnut your best bet is either the places on Greenville or Uptown.
OPH is my favorite breakfast place. Such high standards in quality food and cleanliness, it will never be confused with a greasy-spoon.

          • 47 Straight OU Know says:

Open Invite? Or just Eas Tex? I can be there in 15 minutes- 10 if I take the Harley. :-0

        • KJ1123 says:

Making the trek out there for this one…IT’S GOING TO BE THE GAME OF THE CENTURY!
          …ok maybe not…but still

      • John Garner says:

It’s on Youtube? Awesome! I didn’t know that.

      • Gladdman says:

If you are in the Tulsa area, join the OU Club at the Fox & Hound for the game. NE corner of 71st & Garnett.

    • Bill Duncan says:

I can wait.. I’m forced to.

PPV is more expensive than some game tickets… how does that make sense?

      • Scott Moore says:

I hear ya. But when you live 5 hours away. PPV is still much, much cheaper. That’s how I look at it. Especially for a team like Akron. And they keep doing this every year for the lesser opponent. So a lot of people must feel the same.

    • JB says:

Are you ever not fired up about an upcoming Sooner football season? Lol

      • John Garner says:

Actually, no. But the way last season ended, I’m hoping for a turnaround this season. It starts with Akron. Oo-aa!

  • PLAW0720 says:

From the receiver pics above, it looks like QB’s still have issues hitting the broad side of a barn.

    • KJ1123 says:

Its the WAY back shoulder throw.

    • SamSooner says:

“A picture is worth a thousand words” and you choose to focus on the “QBs still have issues hitting the broad side of a barn.”

How about look at those guys go up and get the ball or great body control by the receiver?

      • Okie403 says:

Look in background…Looks like McGinnis threw to Baxter as his hands are empty while Thomas still has a football. And Mcginnis is leaning for body English like I do after hitting my driver!!

      • Bob Edwards says:

Since we don’t know what the drill was (it could have been one to practice going up for a ball) a person’s response to this tells you more about the person than the players. If you want to be negative, “it’s ooh bad throw.” If you want to be positive, it’s “ooh look at his jumping ability.” No one here knows which is correct because we don’t know what each person was told to do.

    • BleedCrimson says:

Who said those were QB thrown balls?

    • thill says:

      Stephen? Is that you?

    • Doobie74OU says:

Good to remember that there are a couple of Walk-on QBs throwing passes these days too. Not necessarily from one of the 2 guys battling for the job!

    • Fear The Magic says:

Thats what I thought as well when I saw those pics but then ( probably falsely ) placated myself by thinking maybe the QBs are throwing it high on purpose to see which WRs can go up and get em.

  • Matt says:

With the talk about OU’s attrition problem and the disaster that the 2011 class was…What positions would you guys say are thinnest? I’d say safety and O-line. I feel like D-line
is deep just needing experienced. Is my understanding correct or am I
    overlooking something?

    • KJ1123 says:

OL…got thinner before camp even opened.

    • Bob Edwards says:

QB is actually thin. We have three scholarship QB’s. One has shoulder fatigue, and another is injury prone.

    • Doobie74OU says:

I think Safety is a place that is thin on experience as well if Parker or Thomas go down the next guy up may be a Freshman and TE is really thin seeing how the top guy has never played TE before but not sure that matters as much in this offense. Have to wait and see.

    • JB says:

Linebacker is the thinnest position. I’d throw the entire secondary in at 2nd, QB at 3rd.

      • Matt says:

How is LB the thinnest? It is probably the deepest.
        They’re not running the 3-4 anymore…..

        • JB says:

Unless something’s changed and I missed it, they will still be running the 50 look as well as a 4 man front.

We have 11 scholarship LBs, 2 of those are true freshmen and have never taken a snap of D-1 football and arent likely to play unless they are freaks of nature–and one of them is recovering from injury. Two more are redshirt freshmen who’ve never taken a snap either. So that leaves 7 experienced backers, and one of those has been out for a year, two more have played sparingly (although I think Bond will play a lot more this year). So, that leaves us with very little experience at LB, and LB was a glaring weakness last season. So, yeah, I’d say we’re pretty thin at LB regardless of the alignment. I expect to see a lot more nickel package this year.

Same story for DBs. Lots of freshman, lack of experience or quality play.

I could argue QBis thinnest with only 3 scholarship QBs, but I think we’ll be good if Mayfield stays healthy.

          • Matt says:

I agree with you on the DBs, still strongly disagree on the LBs though…There is a big difference between lacking experience and lacking bodies. From my understanding and from what the brainiacs have been writing its going to be about 5 or even 6 (possibly Bond) guys fighting for 2 LB spots.

          • JB says:

So few experienced LBs and Mike Stoops’ recent tendencies is why I think we’ll see a lot more nickel D.

          • Matt says:

Amen to that. The 4-0-7 debacle from the WVU game 3 years ago still gives me nightmares

Anybody have a good site for listening to games on the internet? One that can be trusted

    • EasTex says:

I thought I had one then they didn’t offer the broadcast last year.
I will do some investigating the closer we get to the season, there will always be at least one good source.

      • boomersooner says:

Yeah I hunt and hunt and hardly find anything and if I do it don’t work the next time

      • Jed says:

There used to be a Dallas channel I could get when I lived overseas. Lemme see if I still have it. (OU lists stations on the sooner sports site).

        • SoonerOracle737 says:

There used to be a religious station in Fort Worth that broadcasted the games online the year before last. I think OU clamped down on it’s property rights so no station can broadcast on Interwebs anymore. Only way to get it online is to cough up $100 for a subscription to Soonersports.com. That was my only option to listen to the game when camping at Grand Tetons, WY last year. Listened to Tulsa game on a very slooow connection. Finally gave up and sat in my truck and listened to the broadcast on satellite radio.

          • EasTex says:

So that’s why the excellent innernut broadcast I had for 2013 disappeared last year?
            /dang

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

I also think that is why all practices are closed to other media too. Content is King on Interwebs, and we are all clamoring for Sooner FB content! I blame Joe C, although he is a great guy/ AD too. But still…

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

…meaning one-stop-shop for all Sooner FB content is….Soonersports.com

          • Jed says:

I contacted Mossman around 2005 to see if there was a subscription I could get to get at least radio (I lived in Japan). He offered me an exclusive license for all of Japan at only $1,000,000. I declined. Somehow it seemed we were on different wavelengths.

          • Jed says:

Welp. My info was from 2008, so I bow to your more recent knowledge.

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

I searched the internet as best I could last year and could find nothing. Some station may try to do it online this year, but I would doubt it. I’ll try searching again this year and will post any findings.

          • soonermusic says:

the broadcasts were definitely available from a few different sources last year. It did take some patience to find tho… I usually synced the computer/ radio to my tv

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

Please share if you find a live link. Thanks!

          • PLAW0720 says:

1630 or 1610 is a Christian station that carries the Sooner games in DFW

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

Streaming on in the Internet? I think that was the station I used to get the stream from, but it wasn’t available last season. Their stream contained music just like KRXO and KMOD when the game was in progress.

      • soonermusic says:

It was definitely more of a challenge last year. probably not a good idea to mention it here, when you find one, unless you use a secret code. I suspect the monitors are keeping an eye out ….

    • SoonerGoneEast says:

I have a system at the house that lets me listen to any radio station I want, anytime I want. The house was less than a year old when I bought it and it’s always had that service. I don’t have a clue where it comes from or how it works, I’ve never asked. I just push buttons then sound comes out. I’ll go to work on solving this mystery for my displaced Sooner brethren.

    • JD says:

go to sooner sports and find the stations that broadcast…most will have an online streaming option

      • boomersooner says:

        Thank you sir

      • Stats says:

Yes, but if I remember correctly, they were disabled (and running “normal” programming) since the game was PPV. It was difficult to find one actually broadcasting the game. Someone finally found one, but it wasn’t easy.

        • JD says:

Thought he’s talking about all games…not sure about ppv…maybe it has changed though

          • Stats says:

You’re right, he never said ppv. I jumped to the assumption that he was talking about the ppv game since people usually only look to online radio broadcast when they don’t have television access. And I remember last year thinking I could just listen to the ppv game via an online broadcast and discovered most weren’t broadcasting the game. I tried to pull up last year’s La Tech game thread to see what station finally worked, but the comments have been archived or deleted.

    • Jed says:

…it becomes harder and harder to avoid the conclusion that Josh was not ready to stop being a player and start being a coach/coordinator.

      • DCinAZ says:

Josh was promoted on a fast track program by the Stoops brothers having never accomplished anything at any position.

      • Sooner 76 says:

I maintain that Josh’s failure was about not recruiting the right QBs and developing them, NOT about bad play calling.

        • DCinAZ says:

I think his failure was him trying to be the QB himself from the press box as well as his sloppiness, disorganization, and poor planning.

        • JB says:

Agreed. That, and having a change in scheme forced down his throat, and then not being allowed to run it when Bob realized TK was made of glass. I expect Josh to be very successful at Utah St where he’ll run the scheme he believes in, a Leach Air Raid/Kevin Wilson hi-tempo hybrid.

    • JB says:

Dilfer talking about NFL QB development is laughable since he was so terrible. Lucky for him he played on a team whose defense was so good it overcame how bad of a QB he was. I’m not usually so blunt, but Dilfer sucked. He sucked big time with a career passer rating of 70 (well below the current NFL average of 83 for those who don’t know).

John Gruden was quite impressed with Landry Jones and his skill set, and I value his opinion over some Pittsburgh Post-Gazette geek who probably never even played the game, or a washed up, never was QB from Fresno State.

      • Scott Moore says:

If Laundry Jones can learn to go through his progressions and not stare down receivers he could be a monster in the NFL. He definitely has the accuracy and from what I remember the arm strength. Pocket presence was a little yippy too but with the right development I think he could be a stud. Oh, forgot about leadership. Never mind. 🙂

    • soonermusic says:

The article simply reinforces that college qb’s have an adjustment period when they go pro, especially those who play shotgun in college. Says nothing about JH and QB development, coaching or anything else.

BTW, one of Dilfer’s interesting comments last year was that pretty much all college qb’s throw to their primary receiver virtually all the time (he had a percentage, can’t remember exactly but it was around 85%) of the time, and none of them read the whole field, at at most, half, and mostly not even that–including Heisman winners.

  • JrsySooner says:

      The boy was a wrassler.

  • Matt says:

is Walker the next Mccoy/Harris or is he just an athlete/weight-room guy?

    • JB says:

That’s a hard comparison given Walker is a DE and the others were DTs. Will he be an NFL player? Only time will tell, and expectations to achieve the same level as McCoy are lofty.

      • Matt says:

Well to make sure we’re on the same page I’m talking about
Charles Walker compared to McCoy when he was at OU not the NFL. Even in a 3 man
front Walker will be playing a 5 technique end which is the same position McCoy
would be playing in a 3 man front. From what the Brainiacs have been saying it
sounds like they’ll be using a lot of 4 man fronts this year which means Walker
will be at the 3 tech, the same position McCoy played in college.

    • Daryl says:

There was some rumor floating on a OP a while back that work eithic is an issue with Walker. That he showed up yet again out of shape and little over weight. I don’t know that it is true but if it is he will not Mccoy/Harris

  • Fear The Magic says:

    • Randy says:

Not bad, but I still like Sean McGrew.

    • JB says:

I love his moves but he’s a little too small at 160 lbs

      • Fear The Magic says:

I agree hes small but with the wider gaps in our oline if he can slip through hes a TD waiting to happen.

        • JB says:

That argument works both ways. Easier for a linebacker to slip through and make a tackle. I agree that he’s an elusive athlete, I’m just saying I think he’s too small to be a D-1 RB. Something tells me the OU staff tends to agree given the size of RBs OU recruits these days. We have only 1 RB under 200 and he’s 22 lbs heavier than Kierre. He also is at the bottom of the depth chart.

        • Walter Sobcek says:

I like a small scatback option in a spread offense.

      • Daryl says:

No one said Jalen Saunders was too small and he weighed in at 160 and is currently on a NFL roster too. So move him to WR

        • JB says:

Saunders was a receiver, not a running back. Big, big difference. If he can catch then sure, move him to WR if he’s willing. Chances are that he wants to stay at RB though.

  • MrBigsby says:

Don’t like that all 3 WR’s are having to jump to catch passes. So much for QB accuracy.
