RECOS

Generally not a fan of Travis and his troll act, not to mention I feel like I wrote a similar version of this same story earlier in the week, but this still accurately sums up the stupidity of the Big 12 considering expansion.

To say this is all over the place would be an understatement, but it’s kind of a continuation of previous appearances and pretty damn funny.

It’s long, obviously, but some interesting stuff in here even if you’re not a Tate/MMA fan.

Didn’t realize Houston played such pansies last year, anybody can get up for a bowl game upset and eventually slip back into #OthersReceivingVotes. But if Sumblin keeps fumblin the takeover may happen.

  • SoonerfanTU says:

Just b/c Cincy and whomever wouldn’t “fix” the Big 12 completely, doesn’t mean adding them doesn’t help at all. I don’t understand that line of thinking. There is no way the Big 12 is going to expand if it costs teams money. And there is no way expansion is going to cost Big 12 teams money. The finances of expansion work.

    • Birddawg says:

The problem lies asking the other 9 teams not named Texsa to take a pay cut knowing that Texsa is making 28-30 mil from their TV deal.
Texsa is blocking it because it doesn’t make sense to add teams.
Boren is seeking LT stability. Getting Texsa to fold their network for a conference network. But a conference network doesn’t come close to the $$$ Texsa is getting.
Everything is staying pat this year.

    • Jim Casy says:

      nope.

    • Defend Colfax says:

You are the main guy beating the expansion drum on this site. BYU, Cincy, KState, ISU, Kansas, Texas Tech. Who wants to watch those games? We might as well take the cyanide if those were OUr options. That slate of games is pathetic, and will not pay for big time coaching salaries or for this stadium situation. There really is no fixing it in sight.

      • jimintexas says:

We would become a reincarnation of the failed SWC

        • Bob Edwards says:

Yeah, we should just go ahead and add Houston, Rice and SMU. and rename ourselves the SWC. Maybe we could convince A&M and Arky to come back and the band would be back together with just a few more players.

      • SoonerfanTU says:

Yes, b/c OU vs Minnesota, Indiana, Iowa, Purdue, Illinois, and Northwestern are SO MUCH more exciting.

        • Defend Colfax says:

I have no interest in the B1G but yes. Those games would be more exciting than the mormons or Bengals. Cincinnati is the Bengals right? Your plan is terrible. The BIGXII is a corpse that Texas has been charging people to view.

          • SoonerfanTU says:

lmao, please explain to me how OU vs Minnesota is more exciting than OU vs Cincy, or Memphis, or BYU? Cincy and BYU have accomplished way more than any of those Big 10 teams in recent decades.

And if you aren’t interested in the Big 10 b/c you think OU is going to the SEC, I’ll bet you any amount of money that OU to the SEC never happens. Not now. Not soon. And not ever. OU is never going to align themselves with that cheating, backwoods conference. Not going to happen.

          • Defend Colfax says:

Whatever makes you feel better boss. You barely posted that 50 mins ago and most comments on here are about you being wrong. It’s a terrible plan. The BIGXII is not salvageable without a miracle or giant realignment.
Although I am not interested in it, the B1G is a much much better route. Those bad games you carefully listed still are against teams with larger alumni bases with actual fans and stadiums. The BIGXII died with the BIG 8. We let NEB, MIZZ, and CU leave. We let Texas money dictate our steps and we lost. We now need to focus on the comeback. Memphis, BYU, Cincinnati? Seriously?

          • Birddawg says:

It would be more exciting earning double the $$$ for capital investments, having LT Stability, and being separated from Texsa.

        • Boom says:

Don’t mean to bash TU but I want expansion but there is no options at this point. I’m an older guy who grew up with the Big 8 but it’s a new day and landscape. Trying to keep this old car running is costing us more than buying a new one.

Here’s a line up that would excite me to drive and buys tickets. How about Arky, LSU, MSU, Ole Miss, Bama, ATM, & Auburn, then maybe a Georgia, Florida, Tenn. hmm. You think TV would market those games?? You think folks from other conferences would tune in?
You think RECRUITS would tune in?
Here’s how it sounds today from some obscure commentator no one’s heard of – It’s a beautiful windy day in Lawrence Kansas where the Jayhawks with their 1-6 record are looking for the upset of Oklahoma.

          • soonerinks says:

My preference is a merger with the ACC to create the first 16 team super conference. If that doesn’t work, then opt for the SEC (great football but a rather sleazy money making conference). B1G does absolutely nothing for me.

          • Birddawg says:

            Yikes bro..
That’ wont happen but I would take that over not doing anything.
            BE the first superconference.
BE something or get the hell out.

          • Boom says:

Birddawg, that may work as an option. Reason? ESPN would pump money into a super conference which pitted the best teams from ACC/Big 12. I guess at this point, everything is an option. : )

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

            I’m with you Boom.

          • Defend Colfax says:

That would be a killer slate of hoops games as well.

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

Mine too. But every time I wade into this subject I regret it. Forming a super conference with the best of Big XII and ACC is almost a no-brainer. Maybe coax Golden Domers in too and bam! You have got multiple TV companies banging at the door to televise your games.

          • Drew says:

One thing I think everyone is forgetting is that every other conference WANTS KU . . . for basketball. KU is actually a great partner for OU marketing themselves to other conferences.

          • Boom says:

Agreed. For the purpose of the post, I picked on Kansas. I should’ve just inserted ISU.

          • Drew says:

            Fair enough.

        • cush creekmont says:

The “good” teams comparison might be noted along with the duds versus duds.
TCU, Baylor, WV, texsa, and Ok State versus
Nebraska, Wisconsin, Mich State, Michigan, tOSU (and sometime PSU)

MAYBE TCU, WV, and Baylor (rape U) will stay currently good, but they have a LONG way to get to the legacy status of the others.

Except for the egomaniacal shorthorns, OU is the ONLY storied school left in the Big 12-2.

This without considering the enormous difference in MONEY.

To paraphrase Senor Ferrari – “It would take a miracle for the Big 12-2 to survive – and the shorthorns have outlawed miracles.”

        • Birddawg says:

SEC fits geo, better games, and $$$

          • Defend Colfax says:

“I’ll bet you any amount of money that OU to the SEC never happens. Not now. Not soon. And not ever. OU is never going to align themselves with that cheating, backwoods conference. Not going to happen.”

He doesn’t think it will happen. As much as I can’t stand all the SEC hype, it isn’t hard to look up the states producing NFL talent and see the correlation to SEC winning. There is a reason Vermont produces zero football talent.

          • Birddawg says:

I feel that way with the PAC.
            I don’t really mind either or b1g/sec..
            Just need to get out…

    • Jordan Esco says:

“And there is no way expansion is going to cost Big 12 teams money. The finances of expansion work.”

This just isn’t accurate in the current landscape of cable television. Adding Cincy, BYU, or whomever else is realistically available isn’t going to demand more $$$ from ESPN/Fox. It just isn’t. And no matter what anyone else may try to tell you, $$$ is THE driving factor behind this. It’s not the playoff or anything else, it’s $$$.

      • metzker says:

        Thinks Pink Floyd Moneyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • SoonerfanTU says:

I don’t disagree about the money being the main reason. Well, that and stability.

We’re going to get more money from ESPN/FOX if we add Cincy and whomever. It may not be a lot, but it will partially offset the adding of two new teams. We’ll also likely get an additional team into a bowl game, if not two. And we’ll get additional teams into the NCAA Tourney, which results in a solid payout. And then we’ll have the money from having a CCG. All of that together, I’ve seen, is enough that the Big 12 teams likely won’t lose any money, and should actually end up a bit (not much) ahead.

Somebody laid this out very nicely on another board earlier this week. I’ll see if I can find the post, b/c it’s way more detailed than mine. But you can bet on one thing for certain, there is no way the Big 12 is going to expand if that means LESS money to any current Big 12 member. It’s juts not going to happen.

And I know the Big 12 isn’t the Big 10, but networks are still willing to dole out a lot of cash for rights to games, as seen by the new Big 10 deal(s).

        • Jordan Esco says:

I’d have to know where you’re getting this information that the Big 12 is going to get more $ for adding teams. Literally everything I’ve read, and I’ve read A LOT on this, states the exact opposite.

I mean would they technically get more $ for adding teams? Possible, but even that’s not a given and definitely not the certainty you present it to be.

But even if were to accept the premise that they do get more $ from ESPN/FOX, it absolutely will not amount to a tangible difference on a per school basis.

Thus OU, and the Big 12 as a whole, does not benefit at all from adding teams. Either from a financial standpoint or otherwise, b/c adding two teams like Cincy and BYU (or whoever else) does nothing but dilute your already suspect product as it is.

The problem with this is your argument seems to be based on the premise of them essentially breaking even, but maybe doing a little bit better than that.

And I’d have to challenge why you think the people in charge of making these decisions would expand just for the possibility, NOT a guarantee, of doing maybe a little bit better than breaking even?

          • SamSooner says:

Is it likely that OU throws up their hands and say “We’re done.”

          • Jordan Esco says:

Likely? At this point I’d have to say no, but that’s based more on personal opinion than it is facts.

I just don’t see Boren doing that, but you’ll find any number of people who swear they know I’m dead wrong.

          • Birddawg says:

I don’t see them throwing their hands up alone..
If other teams (WVU/KU) can get invited into other conferences (B1G/ACC) I see another group of teams leaving together much like last time. But that’s at least another year away.
Then again maybe Boren grew a pair and comes in with a bottle of jack drunk slurring words “Fah k u Texsa, we gahhhone”
            (highest pitch voice) “mouthAAAfukAHs”
            Pipe dream I know..

          • SamSooner says:

            Thanks, Jordan.
Personally, I’d like OU to show the other conference what they think of themselves. A bold exodus would send a strong message: “We don’t play around; we’re OU.”

          • Ura Hogg says:

            If only that would happen.

          • SamSooner says:

Wishful thinking, I know. A man can dream, right?

          • Cav66 says:

Have to agree on the financial end of things (the major driver), that expansion does not benefit the Big XII in the short run, and there are no long-term guarantees.
The only potential benefit I see is in terms of perception. A 12 team Big XII allows for a conference championship game on the same basis as the other power 5 conferences. Probably a little hollow in terms of actual value, but it would probably strengthen the playoff argument for an undefeated or one-loss Big XII team that wins the CC game.
It would be a major gamble that any teams we add will put a good product on the field and be at least reasonably competitive. Any perception benefit gained by adding teams would tank pretty quickly if they turn out to be doormats.
Exiting the conference would be problematic ($$) in the short run unless we get a major cushion from the conference we join. Not sure that landing pad exists, but if it becomes available we should probably jump on it and not look back.

          • Ura Hogg says:

Diluting a currently bad product never, never leads to something better.

      • SoonerinLondon says:

I’m generally against expanding the playoff, but the Travis Clay angle actually makes a lot of sense to me…

The problem with keeping the Big XII together, though, is that OU doesn’t get the grant money the B1G would provide, which helps to fill the nearly $1b hole left by lost state funding. This is one of the key points driving the discussion, for President Boren.

  • Clay Davis says:

Hmm, I’m glad for the confidence by SI, but I think we have too many question marks still to garner a pre-season #1.

  • Jason Vos says:

Any list or poles that has OU ranked above Alabama or Clemson to start the 2016 season should be dismissed

    • Cav66 says:

True, but #1 always has a nice sound, even if a little out of place at this point.

    • Bob Edwards says:

Any preseason poll that doesn’t have Alabama #1 until Saban leaves should probably be dismissed.

      • CrimsonNative says:

        The truth hurts.

      • CS says:

Its amazing how bad Alabama’s offense has been over the past years and still they manage to rack up championships. TK is at least two levels above Coker, still they won a ring with the latter. Talks to the intelligence of the defense GURU named NICK SABAN!

        • Bob Edwards says:

Yeah there offense has pretty much consisted of huge offensive line and RB left, RB right, RB up the middle. Discussion on the local radio here in Alabama the other day about how NFL teams are starting to back off on Bama’s RB’s because they are pretty much used up by the time they turn pro. Interesting admission by the Bammers.

          • Brent says:

Amari Cooper was just two years ago. They were able to really spread the field with that dude.

          • Bob Edwards says:

True, but their QB’s haven’t been that great. They do add a passing element but it’s pretty easy to complete passes when you have all day and everyone is at the line of scrimmage waiting for the RB.

          • CS says:

Amari was a beast, I agree. But, if you look at their games, they will pass every 5 plays, and every 10th play will be a deep ball. When you consistently gain 5 yrds a carry you can afford to do that. Also, with their defense, usually they are ending up with great field positions, most of the time.

          • CS says:

Interesting! Also, my thinking goes that the Alabama RBs do so well not necessarily because they are really good, but because the OLine is extremely good. I always admired Henry’s style of running, since the Sugar bowl, he is a good back. But, just looking at his production, you would say, this guy is an unbelievable back, but he is not. Its just the OLine was opening wide open spaces for him to run free.

          • Bob Edwards says:

Just to give you an idea, he had 395 carries LAST SEASON. That is 100 more touches than the entire receiving corps had catches..

          • cush creekmont says:

Wow. That is way more than Murray had at Dallas when the pundits kept saying he would be worn out. Murray may end up being fresher than Henry.

          • CS says:

I think who does well Murray/Henry depends on the OLine blocking, if they are really terrible, then Murray will do better, he has wiggle to make people miss and he is a really savvy runner, if they are extremely good, then Henry is going to take over, since he does well missing safeties/CBs in the open field.

Also, Henry is not a pass catcher, so Murray will be there on third-down, which is also an adv for him.

          • CS says:

            puts it in perspective

          • cush creekmont says:

This draft, their O-line men slipped too. Lack of pass blocking experience may hit some of their players in the pocketbook.

        • soonerguy421 says:

If by “TK is at least two levels above Coker” you mean that Trevor Knight is two levels above Jacob Coker as a QB, then lol

          • Ura Hogg says:

TK has only been better in potential, not in production. Maybe he’ll get his production problems worked out down in College Station.

        • j l says:

Hard not to be a guru with 70 4+ stars on your squad lol.

          • Ura Hogg says:

That’s his most important coaching skill- getting the world-beaters on campus and then teaching them to work together and minimize mistakes. That combination has worked incredibly well.

          • j l says:

you are right, recruiting is so valuable. Not to say that hes not a good defensive coach, but with that much talent, its hard to be bad.

        • Rick says:

Alabama has the best team money can BUY!!!

      • Ura Hogg says:

Big props to Saban and his current dynasty. He’s been on top for a while now.
There are some chinks in his armor though, as evidenced by 2 losses in a row to Ole Mi$$ and a fail against Meyer’s tOSU team the last time they met in the CFP.

  • Tony B says:

The helpful hints on bathroom cleaning are great but being a single guy who works outside my shower gets well pretty nasty from time to time. For all of you who want an easy and fast way to get the nastiness out of a sink, toilet and especially mildew and lime off of a shower use WD-40. It works miracles and wipes down with a rag. Your bathroom may smell like your garage for a few minutes, grunt grunt (in my best Tim the Toolman voice), but will be sparkling clean. PSA of the day. TGIF and Texsa still sucks!

  • ZW_in_Austin says:

Would it be a complete impossibility to peel some teams away from the ACC (say, Louisville, Clemson, and FSU)?

    • Birddawg says:

      Why would they join us?
We have no advantages to anyone unless I’m missing something..

      • ZW_in_Austin says:

No I agree – certainly far fetched. I was just considering that two conferences struggling to be the clear 4th out of 5 conferences might find light in that each are composed of ~ half football schools, half “other”.

        • Birddawg says:

ACC has 15 teams.. 1 shy of a super conference.
          SEC/ BIG 10 have 14..
We are so far behind its egregious.
I mean OU shouldn’t be in a conference that is dead.
Hindsight is 20/20 but we should have left a long time ago..
and it pisses me off that Nebraska.. Mizzou… freaking dumster fire A&M are making more money than OU.. are you kidding me?!?

    • J.r. Kamm says:

Right now, I think the ACC is in a better position than we are. Don’t think you’d be able to convince any of them to leave.

      • j l says:

They make about 3 million less per school on their tv deal, PLUS they dont retain their 3rd tier media rights, which OU made 7-8 million on last year. They make around 10 million less per school than the big 12 does.

    • Boom says:

Currently, Jordan correct me but the ACC is pissed with ESPN. ESPN has the ACC rights but they have been dragging their feet on the conference network. I think this is due to lack of funds brought on by cable cutters. ESPN is hurting so they are not eager to doll out a lot of money right now.
ESPN may doll it out if they could bring the best teams from both conferences B12/ACC. Outside of that, FSU/Clemson isn’t interested.

      • Jordan Esco says:

I mean I’m not aware of all the specifics, but yes the ACC would of course like a network. They’re not getting one and I’m sure their schools aren’t happy about that.

But even with that said, I don’t think it makes the scenario of the ACC folding, FSU/Clemson leaving, or even a merger of some sort any more likely (at this point).

        • j l says:

Dont forget about the ACC’s $50 million buyout now after maryland bailed. Im sure the big 12 would have to eat the majority of that, making it even more unlikely.

        • Boom says:

I agree. If that happened, there would be more shake up than just forming that conf.

    • cush creekmont says:

ONLY if their GOR is invalidated by NOT having a network. Even then, WHY join a dysfunctional group controlled by a delusional bully.

However, the entire college football landscape WILL morph into a 4 “group” super, D1 that will re-align. Whether those groups have current conference names depends on the best marketing. When this happens (for money and marketing of course), 16, 18, or 20 team “groups” will constitute the 64, 72, or 80 super, D1 teams.

It could get interesting if the 64 team version happens because the current P5 plus ND total 65.

      • ZW_in_Austin says:

Well in that case, let’s go ahead and combine with ACC and give the boot to KState, KU, ISU, BC, Duke, etc… Just call it the Big 20.

      • Ura Hogg says:

You’d have to lose Texsa and get some former members to return to make the Big 12 attractive to anyone. And that’s not happening. The Big 12 is Texsa. Even though they can’t win a thing. Money talks, and they’ve got it.

    • Jeremy Phillips says:

Better chance of getting Zona & ASU.. Pac12 network is losing money.. the teams are getting zilch from thatare contract.. Schools are unhappy with the commissioner.. Won’t happen, but a better chance than getting ACC schools

There’s a new hallmark movie coming out in June –

It’s called; “As the Conference Turns”

It is a sad and weepy tale of bitchy ADs back-stabbing one another and endless cat-fights among university presidents trying to mark their territory with inferior equipment.

How about some football talk. Anyone have any inside information on shoe sizes or anything? It’s a slow time of the year.

    • DrewChubbs says:

The only information I have regarding shoe sizes comes from Brent Musburger. Back when Texsa also had a Roy Williams, I think Brent spent a minimum of an entire FB quarter (of each and every Big 12 game he called) reminding we viewers that Williams had a size 16 shoe.

      • Cav66 says:

Brent had a strange habit of becoming fixated on certain things outside of the game (see Katherine Webb) as he moved along in years.

        • DrewChubbs says:

Yes, but at least Katherine Webb is HOTT, if not necessarily interesting on the surface. I do agree though. I think Brent is full of utterly useless knowledge beyond whatever he is doing at the time.

      How about these cleats————

  • Oscar says:

Anyone think Spangler might one day give pro-football a try? Could be a nice tight end.

  • metzker says:

Im guessing the OP when it appears will be rocking, they been working on it for 2 days.
Or K and all are still battling from cinco hangovers.

    • Cav66 says:

I sat through a two hour meeting yesterday to discuss courses of action for a project that I’m pretty sure no one wants to take on (including me). No OP magic came out of that fiasco, so I guess I’ll just have to be patient. Enjoyed a little Cinco celebration with fajitas and cerveza afterwards, so life is good.

    • metzker says:

I just watched that wow glad the vid stopped before brains were shown

      • DrewChubbs says:

My guess is any guy not getting paid big $$$ to try such a stupid stunt probably didn’t have a lot of brains to spill anyway. Hell, he might have had a few extra smarts implanted in the collision!

    From Dr. Saturday:

Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze said Thursday he was caught off-guard by the comments made by former offensive lineman Laremy Tunsil, who said during the opening night of the NFL draft that an Ole Miss coach had given him money.

β€œI know nothing,” Freeze said. β€œI’m not involved in the fact-finding process. I was shocked like everyone else (last Thursday night) living it out in real time but confident that our administration is going to find the facts and then give us a new report on it”

          • SamSooner says:

Yeah, when you answer is to what you’ve been asked, it’s easy to do. And, we know Metz hasn’t. He told a bold face lie about an OP being up. LOL!

But I learned that he best lies have some truth. Something like this: “Yes, I did see your wife today but I didn’t sleep with her.”

          • SamSooner says:

Is “pulled” not an option? Is this a regional thing?

          • metzker says:

            pulled pork from pinkies.

          • Boom says:

good stuff. dang, that sounds good. Off to lunch, see you fellers.

        • MoJoOkie says:

          I use “I can’t remember” and that’s legit.

          • SamSooner says:

That’s a good one: memory is just like pain: no one can tell you how much of it you have. Another good post, MoJo.

    • Ura Hogg says:

“I know nothing,” is always a good line coming from a head coach. lol

      • Cav66 says:

Doesn’t usually fly for the guy in charge, politics being the notable exception.

      • John Garner says:

It kind of worked for Pete Carroll. He landed a helluva gig after jumping ship at USC.

        • Ura Hogg says:

“Kind of” worked is right, since he had to jump ship, and run away from the NCAA. The NFL didn’t really care what he did at USC that broke rules, as long as he could coach.

    • Oscar says:

Freeze “I was shocked like everyone else, cause I was told we gave him credit cards”

    • DrewChubbs says:

I like this. At least as much as I could ever like the Giants. This NFL season should be an adjustment. The Giants have always been my 4th most hated team in the NFL. I will root for Shep wherever he is…but I’ll have to really get used to pulling for the Giants on a regular basis.
