Open Post | Monday, Jul. 11th (UPDATE 7:45 pm)

Marquis Hayes Jr.: As we mentioned last week, OU will be hosting 2017 offensive lineman Marquis Hayes Jr. (Maryland Heights, MO) today. Hayes let us know he made it Norman last night and will be on campus all day today.

Regarding the discussion Hayes has had with Bill Bedenbaugh about a potential offer he said, “We haven’t really gotten into that, but it is a possibility.” – (Super K)

K’Jakyre Daley: Back in April you’ll recall us mentioning 2017 OLB/DE, K’Jakyre Daley (West Palm Beach, FL). The Sooners visited him this past spring and in talking to him it was clear there was strong interest OU.

Early on Daley mentioned plans to use on official visit on Oklahoma, and on Sunday night he confirmed with TFB that visit will take place the weekend of the OU/Ohio St. game. – (Super K)

Team Note | Jordan Parker: In the coming days I (K) hope to do a breakdown of the OU cornerbacks, as it will clearly be a position of focus going into fall camp. The coaches had hoped Dakota Austin or PJ Mbanasor would have clearly asserted themselves in the spring to definitively claim the position, but that did not happen.

And with Michiah Quick making the move to cornerback and having looked pretty good thus far, plus the incoming freshmen — perhaps most notably recent signee Parrish Cobb — the position battle will be made even more interesting.

One cornerback we had yet to really hear much about so far was highly-touted true freshman, Jordan Parker. And it turns out there was a reason why.

TFB spoke with a couple sources recently to check on Parker’s progress and was told he had a “minor surgery” and, as a result, was “limited” for most of June. The goods news is TFB was also told Parker is back and “full go” now, so we hope to bring you all some updates on his progress in 7-on-7’s. – (Super K)

– UPDATE (7:45 pm): No real surprise here, but still good news for OU.

Hoping the early OP means that they have so much info that they will be updating all day.

  • metzker says:

Nice early OP,thanks K!!!!!!!!!!! Now how about some new shirts?

  • cpearc00 says:

Any insight into why PJ is having difficulties separating himself as a starter? He seemed to have all the tools so I’m just curious. Thanks

  • jonnyBgood says:

8th!!! Have a great week everyone!

  • Tony B says:

I’d really hoped Mbanasor would come in and assert himself. The talent is there but evidently there are other issues on why he is struggling to separated himself from others. Hopefully Parker and Cobb will come in and light a fire in these guys with some competition.

    • Nate Broadus says:

I do wonder about the context in that situation.

Brainiacs, when you say that neither Dakota Austin, nor Mbanasor have asserted themselves, are you saying that they’re both playing well and one just has yet to emerge as the unquestioned starter?

    • Bob Bender says:

No separation does not imply neither one is any good.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

The CB situation is scary. Especially with Jordan Thomas

    • Birddawg says:

Plenty time for one of them to take the position.
I will be concerned if we get two weeks until UH and they are still rotating guys splitting 1st team reps.

    • Mark_in_VA says:

Yeah, things are definitely looking shaky at the moment. But a lot can happen before September.

  • Mark_in_VA says:

Boy that’s disappointing to hear about Parker. As a true frosh, he likely needs every bit of the time available to him to have a realistic shot at starting. And he was likely the guy with the most chance of the ’16 class to do that.

    • Jordan Esco says:

Better to happen now than say in fall camp tho.

      Signed,
      Captain Obvious
      🙂

    • Matt says:

IMO no one wants a true freshman starting at corner. Very, very few true freshman look good at corner. I think there’s talent in the upperclassmen there that will sort itself out in camp.

  • SoonerFan92 says:

That news about Mbansor and Austin really sucks. Makes me extremely concerned with the defense if they can’t shore that secondary up. We don’t need to have inexperienced LB’s with a concerns in the secondary.

    • SoonerFan92 says:

But if the reason why Mbansor hasn’t seperated himself is because of the minor foot injury, then I’m a lot more hopeful with him taking the starting role with force.

  • Lincoln Hawk says:

Heard anything on Antoine Stephens or Stanvon Taylor? Would either be in the conversation for a starting spot?

  • Gary Robbins says:

The OU/Ohio State game is shaping up to be a recruiting juggernaut.
Also looking forward to the Bar-b-que bonanza on July 29th.
It’s nice that OU continues to keep their brand in front of the athletes.

  • Jeff says:

Read where some of the 2017 DB not happy OU took Cobb

    • Jordan Esco says:

we’re aware, keeping our ears to the ground. don’t think that is an entirely accurate representative of things at the moment, fwiw.

      • metzker says:

        Hope so!!!!!!!

      • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

It’s just crazy. Trajan was ecstatic during his interviews at the rivals camp and now it seems as if he’s starting to fizzle out. I sure hope we can keep him cuz that dude is the next honey badger and he’s always around the ball.

        • Fear The Magic says:

Its funny really because if Trajan doesnt think that he’ll have stiff competiton at Miami as well then hes fooling himself. In the end you have to have confidence in your own ability and your work ethic tthat you will succeed at your goal whatever that might be.

          • T. Rob says:

They are selling him on playing lots of playing time as a true freshman.

          • Fear The Magic says:

The Age old recruiting story. Promise them anything until they sign on the dotted line and then all bets are off.

        • Fear The Magic says:

        • Wick says:

Makes it tough when your home town team is in your ear daily. Richt knows what he is doing and the message is “come help restore the U.”

      • Scott says:

Hopefully it’s not true but if so Coach Cooks needs to show the young Wolves some love.

      • DCinAZ says:

Don’t know why they’d be upset. Pretty good chance we lose most, if not all, of our secondary after this season. Should be wide open.

        • Scott says:

I don’t know why either, I wouldn’t consider Cobb a real threat to Broiles or Bandy.

          • DCinAZ says:

If anything they’re all pretty equal so just go compete. Everything is going to be wide open, especially if Parker and Thomas decide to come out, because Austin and Thomas are both SRs.

          • Scott says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if Will Johnson leaves early if he gets a good draft grade , if OU takes care of business on the field this year I can easily see Jordan Thomas and Stevan Parker entering the draft. Definitely going to be wide open for the recruits to come in and get playing time.

      • Defend Colfax says:

Tell your cousin to chill out.

    • Fear The Magic says:

Im glad that you could find something negative to contribute Jeff. If nothing else you’re at least consistent.

  • AgedBill says:

It could be that Austin’s play has improved too, making it a lot tougher for anyone else to take the spot. My guess is that the competition is close. That doesn’t mean quality is lacking.

    • SoonerFan92 says:

I sure hope that is the situation.

      • AgedBill says:

I think either player will do fine. Other than being a little under-sized, Austin did well last year when he played.

        • Spitting Bull says:

He did very well. Fundamentally pretty solid. The only thing that sticks out is when he tried to pull a Sanchez and jump a route and got beat.

    • DCinAZ says:

Pretty confident that’s the case. Dakota is a senior who’s been in the program for years and has starting experience. He SHOULD be tough to beat out.

  • metzker says:

Who will be our next BOOM?

    • SoonerFan92 says:

I predict it will be one of the following: Marvin Wilson, Jeff Okudah or Anthony Hines… JK but I wish! Maybe Gumbs or Newman that is committed to the shorthorns would be my guess.

    • DR LEO MARVIN says:

      Hayes JR.

  • Jason Vos says:

Well if no one can create separation , then it means the competiton is good. Iron sharpens iron, so may the best man win

  • Birddawg says:

Pass rush directly impacts the secondary.
Loss of striker and tapper doesn’t help.
    Obo/Deberry/Kelly/Jackson/Rodriguez/Doucet
Getting a pass rusher out of this group will go a long way in how our secondary holds well up as well.

    • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Without a doubt. I’m actually of the belief that a dominate defensive line will mask secondary concerns. Sure it’s nice to have at least 1 lockdown corner, but luckily we do have that. I think once the bullets start to fly we’ll be ok. I just need that pass rush to be on point.

    • DCinAZ says:

Not so much worried about the pass rush as I am the DL. We need people who can collapse the pocket. I’m not convinced that our starting rotation is our best rotation.

      • Birddawg says:

Walker/Overton paired up is what I would like to see.

        • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

This is my dream line for us next season lol. Then have Obo and Jackson shooting off the edge? Pffffft. Get off me.

          • Birddawg says:

Obv lots of factors would have to be right
I would like to see Jackson/Kelly play opposite of each other.
            2 true freshmen OLBs.. size/speed.
            That would be a sight.

        • DCinAZ says:

Yeah ya think?!?!?! LOL!!!! Me too…

    • Cornelius Adamski says:

Did D.J. Ward fall off the earth? Had such high hopes for him.

      • Birddawg says:

        This is the season.
He lost a year in HS due to transfer, lost a year at OU due to injury, redshirt etc ( may have that wrong)
The last two years hes played sparingly.
        It takes time.
        But,
Thats full spring.. summer.. two a days if hes healthy. That’s 3 years healthy.
I expect big leap and possible start.

  • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Do the coaches not like Will Johnson at the other corner spot? I know he’s our Nickle, but I mean it’s worth a shot right? What’s his frame like? Idk how tall he is or how much speed to has to burn. I still think Mbonasor wins out. His speed can make up for some of his mistakes. We still have plenty of time! Also, it helps Greg ward isn’t exactly a surgeon with this passing.

    • Birddawg says:

      Big fan of Will Johnson.
He’s damn physical at the LOS.. he will tear through a brick wall to get the screen.
If they move him out of his spot.. that’s not a good sign IMO.
Probably wont end up making that move until half way through two days after giving all the opportunities to PJ/Austin/Quick..
I think one of those three wins out. My money is still on PJ

      • ALar03 says:

I think that is the main reason on keeping him at nickel because that need that extra body for run support with 5 dbs on the field..

      • Scott says:

I’m rooting for Micah Quick to win the spot.

  • Bob Edwards says:

Brilliant move to post some (slightly) negative news. After all the good news from the Opening there was a real risk all the Negative Nancys would disappear (I hear SD is on suicide watch after so much good news). That was probably the reason we were having to manufacture comments yesterday to keep the count up. Not enough bad news to keep people coming back to complain. Once again, brilliant move by our TFB overlords.

    • Bob Edwards says:

      Oh, and FIRE KISH!

    • Stephen Dale says:

      hello Bob……

    • Kdl says:

I mostly lurk here and am curious as to if you are saying there aren’t as many comments or posters as in the past?

      • Stephen Dale says:

could be the amount of myopic ‘sunshine pumping’ on this site ?

      • Bob Edwards says:

No. Over the weekend there were some comments made that comment count was down on the Open Post. One of the mods (Jordan) commented that they might have to start withholding information. Then there was some attempts to get the comment count up through semi humours means. My comment is playing off that and the ever present battle between the Sunshine Pumpers and the Negative Nancys.

Comment count is probably down but it’s more likely from the fact that it is summer and that many of the posters are off on vacation and don’t have good access to TFB at the beach.

  • BigJoeBrown says:

Recruiting as a whole has been pretty exciting. It was a lot of fun watching SoonerSquad17 get pumped and give shout outs to the SoonerNation. Great reps…

I am telling you the Sooners pull off another season like last year and bring home a Big 12 conference title and have some big victories. The next couple of years will be vicious!

  • Scott says:

I think Levi Draper should be ranked the the number 1 ILB in the country. I watched his 1v1 drills against 5 star Najee Harris and Mr Draper schooled him. Then I watched Anthony Hines 1v1 with Najee Harris and Hines got his ankles broken. Draper showed some improvement in coverage , he did struggle once against Tyjon Lindsey but Lindsey has world class speed.

    • Drew says:

You might be right, but I won’t complain after we land both anyway.

      • Scott says:

Hines is really good in coverage but needs to work on run defense , Draper is really good at run defense but needs some work in coverage. I can’t wait to see them destroy the Big12 offenses in the future.

        • Matt says:

Draper was excellent in the 7on7 games…He made the all-tourney team…

        • Boom says:

Hines area he needs improvement is in coverage. He gets caught a lot with his eyes on QB.
Then again, what LB doesn’t need to improve their coverage skills.

          • Scott says:

True but he is a quick or more twitchy LB than Draper which IMO gives him a little bit of an edge against the Spread teams OU has to face each year. Draper is just built for a ILB. Easily the top two ILB in the country.

    • Jim Casy says:

It is hard to judge LBs in shorts. I want Hines and Draper. Love them both. Sometimes I go to Hines’ 247 page just to admire all the little icons from his 90 scholarship offers.

  • Nate Broadus says:

Good to hear that about Jordan Parker. That is one guy I was hoping would come in and have an immediate impact.

  • Farmer Glickstein says:

For all the top recruits that will be attending the games , Oklahoma needs to blacken the buckEYES and the eyes of Texas!

  • j l says:

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this, but according to scout, robison was the only QB who didnt throw an INT all weekend. Thats very impressive considering all the elite backfield talent out there.

Really excited to see what that kid can do once he arrives

    • Boom says:

He’s twitchy with not only his body but his eyes. Makes quick decisions and throws great out routes and long balls. He has good arm strength at only 190. Once he fills out and gets stronger in his legs, butt and core, he will really whip it. He worked hard during the opening. Really looking forward to seeing his progress.

      • j l says:

Stoked about this class. Seems like all the kids worked hard this weekend, had fun, and represented us well.

At minimum robison and calcaterra both earned a bump in their rankings.

    • DrewChubbs says:

Maybe that’s because he wasn’t throwing against OUr guys!

  • UGA Sooner says:

I knew he was bigger than his brother, but he sounds and looks like a grown man already. Focus should be on SS17, but I’m equally excited for ST18 (Savage Team)

    • CrimsonNative says:

      Haha…”Until Baylor went Baylor.” Classic!

    • DCinAZ says:

Funny where he talks about how some of the guys around him talk about how he “only got the offer because of his brother” and the interviewer asked him if he thought it might have opened the door a little and he just said “well yeah….and I appreciate it” LOL!!

      • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Well spoken young man. I usually can’t stand some of the interviews bc the kids are well, let’s just say I don’t enjoy some of them lol. This kid should be a beast for us! Once again, can we get Cooks another raise? Lol

    • Mark_in_VA says:

Did I understand him right when he said, they’re like “Oklahoma State” because they have this and that but never won a championship? If so, ROTFL!

    • OohRah Mama says:

      What about SoonerSavages18?

  • UGA Sooner says:

Probably means nothing, but I noticed that Scout got an interview with all the killer bees except Bandy

  • TSFFKAG says:

Anyone know if Lampkin will be at 100% when Fall practice begins? I’ve had high hopes he would be able to disrupt any pocket.

  • T. Rob says:

HAHA! The Texas side TFB group chat seems to think Hines is 100% guarantee. What are they smoking?

    • SoonerFan92 says:

No idea what they’re thinking, TRob. I feel he is ours to lose, but I noticed that he hardly ever mentions us in interviews. Maybe because he’s a’ready made up his mind that he’s coming here, and doesn’t feel the need to mention us all the time!

      • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Drapers dad posted a pic of them together and made a comment about them being teammates. I personally think he’s made up his mind and he’s ours to lose. I also like that tweet that Barron browning had from Mike stoops ( well his daughter, but Mike was in it ). I just feel like we are clicking on all cylinders. This seasons couldn’t get here soon enough.

    • Scott says:

Smoking something strong because they wear orange and believe they will make the playoffs this year.

For the past year, Charlie has been getting almost everyone he has wanted.. Hines may be the next one …………OU really needs to beat Texas this year…

    • Unofficial Longhorn says:

It was an excerpt from an article that said that. We’re all aware that it’s far from over with him.

      • Boom says:

Your QB had a rough go of it at the Elite 11. Not bashing him as I know his story but he did have some issues that I’m sure he will iron out. Thick kid. Saw Malik too and he’s a beast. He could go pro after this year and I wish they would let him.

        • Drew says:

Can’t he? I thought the limitation was they needed to be out of highschool for 2 years.

        • Unofficial Longhorn says:

Lol I bet you do wish that.

          • Scott says:

I like that top 6 for Jeffery Okudah.

          • Unofficial Longhorn says:

Hey man, congratulations. He’s an ELITE level talent for sure. Too bad we haven’t had enough recent success on the field for him to take us seriously. I’m sure he’d have fit in great with our budding secondary. In all honesty though, I never truly felt like we were a real player for him. I definitely think it’s between OU and tOSU.

  • Zach Evans says:

A while back Jeffrey Okudah tweeted he’d announce his top 6 today, is that still happening?

  • Jordan Esco says:

    update added

  • DCinAZ says:

Okudah will be a gotdamn Sooner.

    • T. Rob says:

I know right. He believes now. Get the best of both worlds. Compete for Nattys and still be only 3 hours away from the DFW. And you know Coach Cooks is going to develop those young wolves. Him and Barnes in the deep secondary is scary.

      • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Scary good. Barnes is such a beast and his fame would allow another 15 lbs of solid muscle easy and same goes for Okudah. Okudah is already generating comparisons to jalen Ramsey who was easily the best athlete in this years draft.

      • DCinAZ says:

Yep. He feels at home in Norman. He says so every time he’s in front of a camera. He’ll be a Sooner in the end.

  • j l says:

Is it surprising that UT didnt make okudah’s top 6?

    • Mark_in_VA says:

Probably not. About 3 months ago, he did a pic with T. Brown and J. Broiles and all 3 of them were holding whorns down.

    • T. Rob says:

Nope. To much uncertainty at UT, with coach strong job stability. He’s smart.

      • Jdizzle says:

You do realize they are literally a QB away from being really damn good, right? I know finding a QB isn’t easy, but they are not far off…

        • T. Rob says:

Yeah and there also another losing season away from letting their coach go. The alumni is growing impatient. And if OU runs the big 12 again this year the heat will really be on. Beating OU last year gave him a pass.

          • Jdizzle says:

You’re right. That is why it is a huge season for them. Their defense will be the best in the Big 12 this year. But you are right,

          • T. Rob says:

Your right about there D line. But the great recruiting class over the past 2 years have kept hope alive for strong at IT. But at some point their gonna have to produce some Wins on the field this year. I’m from Texas and I would love to see them and OU running the big 12 this year. We want competition.

          • cush creekmont says:

Im glad we dont have to deal with the instate team, just thought i had heard a month or so ago they were making up ground with him.

        • T. Rob says:

I agree 2016 was a great class for them. They’ve in fact had pretty decent classes over the past couple of years. But are they developing players, is it showing on the field. You can lead a 4 or 5 star to the field, but can you get the elite play out them.

    • Sooner Ray says:
