Open Post | Thursday, Apr. 21st (UPDATE 1:05 pm)

John Humphrey Transfer: We spoke to a few sources regarding John Humphrey’s decision to transfer and was given the impression it mainly stemmed from the feeling Humphrey believed he wasn’t likely to crack the rotation this upcoming season. It doesn’t sound like there are any hard feelings on either side, rather Humphrey simply saw a number of other guys in front of him/the depth of the position overall and was concerned about how long it may take to get consistent time on the field.

However, one source did note that Humphrey was close to being the team’s primary punt returner. Showing consistency anywhere on the field could certainly help raise a players status in the eyes of a coaches, but whether that would translate to more WR reps is difficult to say. – (Super K & Brandon)

JK Dobbins: Oklahoma was sitting in a good spot with 2017 RB JK Dobbins (La Grange, TX) before he somewhat surprisingly committed to Ohio State several weeks back. However, that doesn’t mean the Sooners have ended their pursuit of Dobbins.

Earlier this week Dobbins let TFB know the Sooners would be stopping by to see him this week. They are expected to visit today, however, I’m working to confirm with Dobbins whether that is still happening (but at this point I have no reason to doubt it). – (Super K)

– Ceedee Lamb: OU wide receivers coach Dennis Simmons stopped by to see 2017 OU commit earlier today. – (Super K)

UPDATE (1:05 pm): I just exchanged a few messages with JK Dobbins and he confirmed that coach Jay Boulware did stop by to see him today. Sounds like the visit went well. – (Super K)

    Numero Uno?!

  • Maranatha846 says:

Wasn’t Humphries in line to be our fair catch specialist on punts? Oh well.

    • Bob Edwards says:

I heard we are practicing a new play this year. The returner waves for a fair catch, but right before it lands runs out of the way and lets it go out of bounds. It supposed to totally revolutionize our return game. It lowers the number of muffed punts and avoids injuries to our returner.

        Genius!

      • cush creekmont says:

Need some regression analysis on this. There may be significant knee injuries from bolting to the sidelines. It might be best to assign a non-redshirt scout team player to watch the ball go over his head and yell “get away” to the other players.

You are right on that. His “persona” did not fall around his guitar talent so it went under appreciated.

Is OU looking to take 2 high school RBs this year or just 1 with the Juco RB already on board?

    • Randy says:

      Needs to be 2 HS..

    • cush creekmont says:

Indications and comments seem to say YES. TWO HS RBs. Mr. Sermon and one more.

    • Bob Edwards says:

Brooks and Ross graduate and there is a good chance of Perrine and/or Mixon leaving. So I would think you want to recruit three to replace. But you make one a JUCO to even out the scholarships. That seems to fit what we are doing as well as making sense based on the numbers.

      • cush creekmont says:

        Exactly!

      • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

I don’t want Perine or Mixon to leave early but then again the quicker they can get to the NFL and start wreaking havoc the Sooner these recruits will get reminded as to who the real RBU is and start committing. That’s also why I pray that Sterling gets drafted to a team with a quality QB so he can do work as a rookie and give us the ability to say we have an NFL receiver who is legit. We haven’t seemed to have any of our guys (receivers) pan out once they get to the NFL. We need to become an NFL factory where if you’re a junior at OU, you can declare and still have a great chance at rounds 1-2. I want our recruiting classes to all be in the mid twenties bc we constantly have kids leaving for the NFL bc they are that good. Obviously winning on the field will help all of this, but having stars in the NFL is almost just as valuable if not more to most of these kids.
I know that was kind of off subject but I needed to type it lol.

        • Will Narramore says:

Although he hasn’t been a star, Kenny Still has been a solid pro. And what could’ve been for Broyles if he hadn’t gotten hurt…

          • DrewChubbs says:

You can count Mark Clayton in there, too. He had a world of potential, but somehow he couldn’t ever be 100% healthy. He even did some impressive things in St. Louis during Bradford’s rookie season…until the injury bug hit him again.

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Kenny got screwed with the saints trading him and Broyles wasn’t utilized at all. It’s quite unbelievable that a guy who broke every damn receiving record in college couldn’t do anything in the NFL.

    • jimintexas says:

They indicated the JUCO may be a utility type of person that will play multiple positions

  • Randy says:

Really want Trey Sermon and Cam Akers but Sermon and Dobbins is fine too..

  • T. Rob says:

What do y’all think are the odds we end up with the number 1 recruiting class come close of business on NSD.

    • T. Rob says:

And does someone know when was the last time we had #1 class or top 3

    • KJ1123 says:

I think it will be tough but we have a great start. Some schools close really well when we get closer to NSD.

    • Daryl says:

I think we have a chance to have the best class but limited scholarship numbers could prevent us from the top spot

    • cush creekmont says:

      T. Rob, I think the “ranking” people have too much SEC prejudice to rank OU #1 even if we have great players. I think we will have a better class than we rank because of this. No matter the rank, SS17 has such GREAT camaraderie that it will be greater than the sum of its parts. .

      • T. Rob says:

I agree on a 1 spot but if we get the right quality depth this class and 18 then you can lock us up as playoff contenders for years to come

        • cush creekmont says:

That IS what it’s about. We all laughed at Mack Daddy for winning year after year in February while Bob Stoops whipped his butt in October. That chemistry the kids are building with one another is what makes me so high on this class. If they impart it to 2018, the sky is the limit!

      • Drew says:

Just look at the 247 composite vs the ESPN rankings: We have 10(?) rivals 300 but only 6 ESPN 300. On the other hand, tOSU is 12/12 ESPN300.

    • Soonerfan24 says:

I think a number one ranking is more likely in the 2018 class

    • Framoka says:

Rankings are rankings; its a formula so its statistically based. Doesn’t matter which team it is. As far as having a #1 class; its going to depend on the D-Line and LB’s IMO. We’re good at QB, DB and I beleive RB and OL will be fine; although our OL depth might scare some prospects off. The two we have coming in are stout; Valentin and the Michigan kid.

      • T. Rob says:

If you look at the last 5 national champs you see they all had top 5 recruiting classes within a 2 yr time. So statistically it does have a factor

        • metzker says:

          Exactly.

        • Malicong says:

Don’t confuse correlation with causation. Ranking doesn’t matter if the parts don’t fit. If OU is running a spread offense, having a 5* option QB wouldn’t matter and vice versa. OU needs to focus on getting the right guys first. Your question was about getting the #1 class, not just getting a top 5 class. The top 5 order many times is subjective, hence that the ranking doesn’t matter as long as OU is the in the top 5. Now there is a huge difference in top 5 vs being ranking 20-25. If they are outside the top 10-15, then yes ranking very much matters.

          • T. Rob says:

I totally agree with you. Being consistently in the top 7 in 2 to 3 year time frame will give you a lot of quality depth to make multiple NC tittlebplayoof runs

    • Scott says:

      I like our odds.

    • ouwooferman says:

This ranking does not matter. Player production counts. UT has had so many top classes but to what outcome? Yeah, guess it would be a nice thing, but in the end…NBD

      • T. Rob says:

Ouwooferman. Rankings do count because your getting the best however you still need great coaching to go along with it. Which is UT problem. You can’t tell me that we got out coached against Clemson…no they had more depth and talent. We been over achieving. Which is great the kids rise up to the challenge

        • Fear The Magic says:

Top ranking probably not. Top 5 very possible.

        • ouwooferman says:

Guess we should not have won the NC in 2000.

          • ALar03 says:

I think recruiting and coaching is far different than it was in the late 90s.. Recruiting is more precise, you still get the diamonds but not as often as it was back then.. And the coaching these kids get now plus all the camps to help them develop make coaching different as well.. To me it’s important to get top classes but get kids in those classes that work to be better.. You can have all the ability in the world but if you don’t put in the work you’re not gonna go anywhere, except to live with Johnny and Josh

          • ouwooferman says:

give me 3* that are blue collar and work their tails off (Sam Bradford is a shining example) over entitlement any day> We have seen what hard work vs Stars did to OUs Mens BBall program.

          • ALar03 says:

I would take a 5* that was ranked around 20th in the country that works his ass off to prove his entire career he should have been number 1.. Not all top players feel they are entitled but I get what you’re saying..

          • Defend Colfax says:

That Adrian Peterson, Gerald McCoy mold.

          • T. Rob says:

Nothing wrong with 3 stars, they have a chip on their shoulder and are hungry to prove that they are the best. You need them just as well. But those players were also developed and coached well, that doesn’t happen everywhere. Looks at Trent Williams he was a 3 star recruit and now he’s the top paid NFL lineman in the league

          • SoonerSpock says:

First Sam Bradford was just ranked as a 3* but was also ranked as a 4* QB by Scout.

            https://rpiarchive.ncaa.org/Stats%20Library/SB%20Nitty%20Gritty%20thru%20April%2017%202016.pdf

Additionally I have attached a detailed analysis comparing the success of 5*, 4*, 3*, 2* and 1* recruits. It documents team success based on recruiting class rankings. It compares the results of recruiting class * ranking against the other * classes.

While the rankings cannot project the 5* recruit will be a bust it can document that the a 5* recruit is many times more likely than a scrappy 3* recruit to become an All-American, All-conference or starter.

Using Rivals and looking at 2008-2012 All American players the odds of making All American is

          • T. Rob says:

Took the words from my mouth on that one…. Exactly my point BOOM

          • ALar03 says:

Soon!! I’m really ready to see this class take shape and add another trip to the playoff I believe we will stay in the top 5 but I’m not sure were gonna get top d line players this year.. Think it will take a year to get recruiting down just like it has with other positions we had changes too

          • T. Rob says:

It’s a new era. These kids are in highschool creating trained by retired NFL players of their lositions. Competing in combines. That wasn’t going on in the 90s. They are dissected in drills at 15 and 16. Back then you didn’t compete against the elite peers of your high school class like you do now. So it’s a lot more accurate now, however you can never rule out self drive in that particular kid and the coaching staff that can developer him furthermore.

          • ALar03 says:

Yea I’m only in my late 20s and the last few years I was coaching youth football in Tulsa kids that are gonna be in 6th grade this coming year, we had some really good players and personally thought we had the best team in oklahoma.. But it was crazy finding out camps for kids of that age and then being seen with kids from Texas and they end up getting ranked in the top 100 in the country at 10 years old.. Thinking when I was playing we played kids around us and we had a championship, now kids win their city then go to win their state then region… Its just crazy how many people get eyes on these kids and are constantly showing them how to play

          • T. Rob says:

Yeah and us old heads don’t understand the times have evolved right in front of our eyes.

          • ALar03 says:

Yea it’s crazy to think they have had these rules of not being able to lay out a receiver for almost 10 years now… Football has completely changed from a physicality stand point in 15 years

          • T. Rob says:

It’s in favor of offense and higher scoring.

          • ALar03 says:

Whatever helps the ncaa make more money.. Of course that is everything! Football and basketball are competing with each other

          • ALar03 says:

And that’s not even taking about YouTube and the videos of all these young kids

        • ouwooferman says:

We have been getting out coached since Boise State in almost all bowl games (noted exception was Bama 2013) who btw had the No.1 ranked class in 2013.

        • Matt says:

Agree on Clemson. I rewatched the game a few weeks ago for the first time since it happened. I actually came out encouraged for the most part. The game defensively came down to a few missed tackles. Dom hits Gallman in the hole but whiffs on the tackle and he busts a 20 yd gain. They score on that drive. Parker goes for the INT rather than the tackle on Renfro and he makes the catch and runs in untouched. Dom forces a fumble on an option run but Bond knocks it out of bonds. Potential momentum swing if they recover that. IMO the big difference was the offensive line got handled and our linebackers and A. Thomas missed a boatload of tackles. I hope next year is better.

          • Dick Bump says:

I rewatched it recently also. A couple of drive killing penalties and the fake punt hurt as well. I felt it was actually fairly close.

    • Jordan Esco says:

      1,000,000-to-1, at least

    • connie usa says:

“0”. Hard to beat out tOSU the way that State is loaded, and the way he recruits in the East.

    • Dustin says:

Zero. I’m not saying that we won’t have the best class. It just won’t be ranked the best because all the recruiting sites will load the “Top _____” with SEC regional athletes.

  • KJ1123 says:

“Conor McGregor isn’t retired and is still willing to fight at UFC 200, but the UFC featherweight champion is going to need a lighter publicity and promotional schedule to do it, he today announced.” Knock it off dude.

    • Framoka says:

Didn’t he lose his last fight? I don’t follow UFC, so I’m not sure what the stink is about. I’m open for a tutorial if someone would like to comment? Isn’t he just wanting more money for doing less?

      • KJ1123 says:

lol yeah he lost, apparently he doesn’t want to do the extensive promotional stuff that leads up to the fight. He’s trying to be a businessman and call his own shots but, imo, UFC fighters don’t make enough money (like boxers) to be able to call those shots. He’s just being a whinner.

        • Framoka says:

got it. So his fellow UFC’s probably like it; its like a hold out deal.

          • KJ1123 says:

            Yes basically.

          • Framoka says:

thanks. He seems like a egomaniac which is surprising since he just got his ass handed to him; but again I don’t follow (I get the headlines, that’s all).

        • Framoka says:

got it. So his fellow UFC’s probably like it; its like a hold out deal.

        • Jordan Esco says:

couldn’t possibly disagree more w/ this

        • Dustin says:

He’s said that all of the promotion hinders his prep work. I can understand that. Surely, he and Dana White can come to some sort of compromise.

          • KJ1123 says:

Yeah I dont understand that either. Im sure they will. Sounds like Dana was playing with him. Either do it or you’re out. And you lose your belt.

          • Dustin says:

Dana stands to lose a lot of money with McGregor not on the card. It seems to be a pride thing at this point.

          • KJ1123 says:

Supposed to be a good card. He’ll fight, not sure it’ll be the biggest draw but it will be a pretty good money maker.

          • Dustin says:

They’ll still make money. Dana has a dedicated and loyal fan base. What he’s going to miss out on is the casual fan money. I’m a casual fan. There’s a handful of fighters I would actually pay money to watch. Conor is one of them. My money is definitely staying in my pocket without a McGregor fight.

          • KJ1123 says:

I hear you, I stopped paying for the fights, just cheaper to go to a bar and watch it for 10 bucks or so. Between UFC and Boxing it was getting pretty expensive. The card has to be worth it to me. The last Conor fight card was a bust to me until the Holm and Connor fight. That was definitely worth my 10 bucks, but I would of been upset if I paid $60.

          • Dustin says:

The 200 fight card is looking SICK. I would definitely buy that and have a fight party with McGregor headlining. Without him, I’m 60/40 against it.

          • KJ1123 says:

Just looked at it really quick. Aldo Edgar should be really good. I think Hendricks Gastelum has the potential to be fight of the night. Both dudes are tough.

          • Dustin says:

Plus a Velasquez fight. It’s a card where you would watch every fight instead of just mingling around waiting for the main event. 200 would certainly be worth $60.

          • KJ1123 says:

I hope Cain busts Browne up. I thought Browne was on a roll a little bit ago, but I think he changed camps and started losing. But yeah a Diaz Mcgregor fight would make it a “no brainer” card to get.

        • paganpink says:

They make plenty of money now- at least at the top of the game. And can make millions in endorsements which is something he may screw up by acting like a prima donna.

          • KJ1123 says:

The reebok deal killed alot of endorsements for the fighters, probably the big one outside of that is still like EA Sports. But yeah he needs to just fight and do the UFC demands him to do.

          • paganpink says:

I will say that it is an ongoing thing that Dana White angers and fights with almost every big star that they get in the UFC. They just have no real alternatives to make big money in the other leagues so you get the impression that the UFC wouldn’t have even half the people that they do now if they had a choice. And in a sport where only the top 1% can make a living at it it’s obvious they have to eat crow or they don’t eat at all.

Anyone think Shep gets drafted late round 1? I’m not optimistic about the rest of our boys (though I love them all).

    • DR LEO MARVIN says:

If he is still around when the Patriots have their pick in round 1 I think he goes to New England. They have expressed interest.

      • Framoka says:

I agree. He’s being devalued as a “slot” receiver and he doesn’t have desired size. Man, he is a absolute stud and a great human being. I feel strongly he’ll get picked no later than 45, but for the moneys’ sake I hope he’s round 1.

        • DR LEO MARVIN says:

He is a play though. If he goes to New England at’least he won’t go to crappy team in the first part of the second round.

        • Stephen Dale says:

one pre draft selection show listed him at #55—going just before the Steelers pick at #58………….just me but I think he goes late 1st rd or early 2nd..

      • Doobie74OU says:

Patriots don’t have a first round pick because of “DeflateGate!”

        • DR LEO MARVIN says:

Got me there. There were some articles about them having interest in Sheppard. Maybe they do some trading or back room dealings. Either way hope he goes somewhere that does not suck.

          • Doobie74OU says:

For sure! They do have the 29th and 30th pick in the 2nd round so they definitely could package some picks to move up in the top 10 of the 2nd round or late 1st.

          • Birddawg says:

Yup I think i read the same thing… He will be gone by the time pats are scheduled as of now to pick.. they could move up

        • Shelby is a Patriot says:

          🙁

      • T. Rob says:

I would then somewhat like to see the Pat’s make a run with him.

      • Scott says:

Also think the Steelers would be a great fit for Sterling. One of their starting WR got suspended for 1 year.

      • Fear The Magic says:

NY Giants. Beckham and Cruz out wide, Shep in the slot. Even Eli Manning couldnt screw that up.

    • connie usa says:

It’d be nice, but I have seen very few “pundits” having him go in the first. He has spectacular hands, is a great route runner, and has a lot of heart, BUT he doesn’t have elite speed. I think he goes mid-late 2nd.

    • Birddawg says:

Early 2nd.. no lower than 40th

  • SooperDave says:

Do you think Abdul Adams redshirts this year? Seems like he could be good at fair catching.

    • Framoka says:

I don’t see how he can get on the field with the depth so yes. I live in Durham, he’s is a absolute stud. I was so excited OU got him, really underrated prospect.

      • SooperDave says:

I was just thinking if SP and JM both leave after this year it wouldn’t hurt to have another back besides Rodney Anderson having some game experience, even if it was just on special teams. I think he is better than Sermon too.

        • Framoka says:

You are right about the “potential” lack of depth next year, so they may play him for that reason. This coaching staff doesn’t strike me as really getting into the minutia of roster management, but that’s just my opinion of course. Kid can catch and is great in space. Faster in pads than on the clock and fairly thick. Like him a lot.

        • Will Narramore says:

If i had to guess, Perine leaves at the end of the year and Mixon returns for one more year as the feature back. So then you’d have Mixon, Anderson, Adams, Sutton as your 4 main RBs probably and then whatever HS guys we get this year either get spot minutes or redshirt

          • SooperDave says:

I think Mixon looks better than ever, but I also wonder how much Anderson will push him. I’d like to see Joe stay another year, but I just don’t know if being the feature back will outweigh the NFL payday.

          • DCinAZ says:

He won’t be able to command much of a payday until he plays as the feature back IMO.

          • SooperDave says:

McFadden and Jones were both first round picks in 2008 out of Arkansas.

          • DCinAZ says:

RBs don’t get drafted that high as much anymore so it’s a little harder than it was back in 08.

          • Birddawg says:

70/30 he’s gone after a well rounded great season.
            (pass pro,catching,running)
            After a natty.. nfl bound

      • Tony B says:

They didn’t necessarily need Anderson on the field last year but they used him as a special teams guy. I think they know if these kids are that talented coming in that they may as well use them up where they can because even with a redshirt year they can leave after a redshirt sophomore season and OU would only get 2 years of playing time out of them. This way they get 3 and get the kid some valuable game time experience as a freshman and add depth in case of injury. Just like we may only get 2 years out of Mixon if he chooses to leave this year and without a redshirt we’d have at least had him for 3 (yes I know they had no choice there and I am not condoning his actions or saying he should’ve been allowed to play as a true Frosh. He screwed up). Just my theory but I could be way out in left field.

    • Jordan Esco says:

They don’t tend to redshirt RBs, just look at Rodney Anderson this past year. And especially w/ what they could potentially lose after this year (Perine, Mixon, Brooks & Ross), I’d be surprised if they redshirt him.

  • Fear The Magic says:

Im not happy to see Humphrey transfer but the fact that he saw his chances of substantial playing time as doubtful is probably a good thing. To me it probably says he saw real talent ahead of him.

  • Dustin says:

    Joshua Paschal?

  • T. Rob says:

What are your predictions for this season record in football?

  • KJ1123 says:

Sammy will be traded to the Broncos.

  • BleedCrimson says:

I believe that Eagles traded up to ensure they get the top left OT in the draft. That is a key position for keeping QB’s healthy.

    • KJ1123 says:

Maybe….their LT has been getting injured alot.

    • DCinAZ says:

I read earlier that Sam is upset with the organization because they’re trading up to draft a QB.

    • ALar03 says:

I think they drafted up to take a better deal from someone else.. The real life version of draft day

    • cush creekmont says:

Laremy Tunsil is plenty good, but an extra 1 next year a 2 the year after and 2 3s this year is too much compared to say the ND tackle Stanley, who is likely to be available at 8.

    • SoonerSpock says:

Highly doubtful Sam would be upset if the Eagles were planning to draft a left OT. Most likely they are drafting a QB.

    • Brien Brown says:

Rumor is either Wentz or Goff, which ever one the Rams don’t take. I personally hope the Rams take Wentz as I think he is the better prospect long term. Though Cal kids are not to shabby. I am a Cowboys fan so I am hopeful they won’t take Bosa as we don’t need more head cases.

    • Shelby is a Patriot says:

Eagles already confirmed they’re taking a QB.

  • KJ1123 says:

I heard somewhere that Josiah St. John is the top pick for the CFL draft. Or one of the top picks at least.

      Take care Metz.

    • Oscar says:

Thanks Metz. Tomorrow is another Sooner day!

  • Christian Taylor says:

so with Humphrey leaving who do you think the slot receivers are apart from quick, baxter and andrews?

  • SquidGiant says:

Here’s another nice distinction for OU, and another good reason to go after former Sooners.

    http://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/ncaafb/florida-is-the-best-school-in-the-country-at-producing-nfl-draft-busts/ar-BBs4EY0?ocid=spartanntp

    • shawnee sooner says:

      who were the 3 busts??

      • Slim Sooner says:

I don’t know who they’re counting as a bust. Can’t think of three.

        • SquidGiant says:

It’s not a very well written article, but fortunately people believe pretty much anything they read on the internet. So, if a few current or future recruits see it, oh well. I just like to see good press for the Sooners.

          • SamSooner says:

Squid, thanks for sharing. Another thing to look at is the number of player OU puts into the pros vs. Bama: they are the one with all of the 5* recruits. Must be a development thing.

You would think Bama would have a lot more players in the pros compared to OU.

          • SquidGiant says:

I also had a chuckle at the Cowboy’s 2 out of 4. Low number and bad odds.

          • SamSooner says:

And, consider the fact that some of OU’s players were drafted in the late round or un-drafted who are starters.

  • 47 Straight OU Know says:

JMHO. I can not believe everybody is not exited about the WR position. We have lots of talent at this position. My thought is everybody knew who the star was when Shep was here so there was no ? This year there is no star so it is all out war at practice I am guessing. I mean why would Lewis transfer here, with all the talent? I may be daydreaming, just a thought.

  • Thegunnfather says:

That sh^# was a joke. If anything Felton should be gone

  • Thegunnfather says:

Adams has sisters that could whip him

    • Sooner Ray says:

Wonder how much interest there is from his end.

      • SamSooner says:

I need to check him out. Coach B has been stingy with the OL offers. That should mean something.

        • Sooner Ray says:

Well, his page claims he’s the #1 O-lineman in Louisiana so not a bad offer by coach.

          • SamSooner says:

Taking someone from the $EC is always nice.
I wonder why BAMA’s been coming in our back yard lately.

            Ole Saban burning bridges, perhaps.

          • Sooner Ray says:

It could be that there are some really talented in state players right now, or he’s looking for more intelligent student athlete’s than usually found in sec country….lol!

          • SamSooner says:

That was worth a loud giggle. LOL!

          • Slim Sooner says:

Think we’d have to pry him away from Lester?

          • Sooner Ray says:

Haven’t looked into the kids interests but it is typical for Lester to be in hard for the best in state.

          • SamSooner says:

He honestly might not care anymore. He has one foot out the door.

  • Sooner Ray says:

Tampa Bay advances in the hockey playoffs, great goal in the final minutes.

      • Sooner Ray says:

Didn’t tune in till about mid third period but at least I saw the one and only goal, and it was a sweet one IMO.
