So based off what I have heard. We have in fact been playing good D except on 3rd down, now, missed tackles and penalties are on the players. Now the rushing 3 down line men and not blitzing more often is on the coaching staff. Now rather UH is pushing off and holding, that is on the players to overcome the refs not seeing that and make adjustments and not let it get in their heads. But, I guess I get why everyone is mad and all, but, let’s be real, we knew this D would be a work in progress, Walker, Evans, Thomas, Thomas, and Parker where only proven play makers coming back. The O pulls their head out we will be fine. But, don’t slow down the pace to save the D, run the O and score at will and as fast as you can.

Didn’t see Baker as the main issue today. The receivers creating no separation and the o-line failing to protect were a problem. The fact that we rushed for 70 total yards; big problem. The defense giving up one 3rd and 15 after another was a problem. Baker going 24/33 for 323yds and 2 TDs doesn’t seem like the issue.
Agreed that Mayfield wasn’t the problem. He just bears the burden of being QB on a team that just lost a game it should have won.
Hey R, I’m on your side, HOWEVER, there is nothing wrong with denigrating the team/coaches for laying an egg .. nothing at all. We are fans, and we get wrapped up in this stuff. Why is it wrong to criticize the coaches for not getting the team ready? Stoops does this every year, and we all should be used to this by now. A Sooner football fan has to accept this or simply hit the road. Stoops’ “signature” is OU cannot dominate the season, its’ just that simple.

mayfield and his receivers need to work on their game. mayfield was just holding the ball much too long. offensive line didn’t help much though. but, no separation. we are missing shepherd.
Not just shepard. Where are wr routes? Is anyone coaching them? Freaking unbelievable to me to imagine, that with all the recruits we get, we cant get one wr worth the scholarship? Its confusing to me. Every other team has wr’s. Whats the difference? We need route runners. Ins, outs, slants, curls. EASY completions. Not sure what the hell is going on with wr’s.
I couldn’t figure out what the offense was trying to do at all. Middle of the field seemed open all day and we rarely worked it. We never ran a draw that I can think of.

This game adds more to the argument AGAINST Houston to the Big XII than for them. If we don’t take them, then their Coach will be gone and Houston recruits will go to other members of the Big XII rather than staying in Houston.

It makes me wonder if there’s just no consequences for those penalties during the next week of practice. I mean why else would they continue to happen year after year.
We knew this would be a tough beginning. Hoping we go back and find the same resolve we did last year after the texsa loss.
Good effort from the guys. Bad calls from the officials and some stupid plays cost us. We need to work on somethings, but I like what I saw from the defense. We have gotten the loss out the way, watch us beat Ohio State in 2 weeks and run the table.

We didn’t have the fire that Houston showed the whole game. We looked dominant on the first drive and then acted like we expected them to fold. A couple of bad calls cost us, but we would have lost without them. We need to understand that we have to play every game like we played Baylor last year. We have to play with our hair on fire, or we can’t beat good teams.
Tired of seeing runs out of shotgun with down hill backs. And watching baker hold the ball and leave good pockets. Maybe nobody was open and all their new DBs are just a lot better than ours but I doubt it. Didn’t get to see down field much. Did a good job of shutting down the run which was obviously a focus but didn’t have the backers and corners to back it up. Offensive line obviously needs to get better too, but I can’t put it all on them. Just first glance emotional opinion. BOOMER SOONER!!!

I noticed that. He started at the ball and then had to come at the ball from a shortened run up (And then they run it back for a touchdown. Absolute crusher.) We were on the wrong side of the breaks all day. Too much to overcome.
All the praise for Coach B and his OL and they cant pick up blitzes then Mayfield leaves the pocket early. Fortunately the D did get much better

OU still isn’t equipped to play with the big boys. The secondary is awful, the offensive line is even worse. Let’s not lose sight of the fact that nobody stepped up at WR. Baker scrambled around the whole game, and nobody could get open. This against a secondary replacing 3 starters. We’ll get worked by Ohio St in 2 weeks, and probably twice more immediately following that.
None of those WRs from last year should even be on the field. I’ve been talking about that on here and I’m surprised anybody thinks Baxter, Westbrook, or Mead should be out there at all.
Westbrook, and probably Baxter are fine. The problem is that we don’t have a Shep out ahead of them, and that is what we need. I’ve been saying all offseason WR would be a problem. That said, they aren’t the reason we lost today. Plenty of other places to point the blame.
Its a wonder we dont plan to run the ball more then, and give the wr’s some play action that might actually help them get open.
The secondary isn’t awful. That is a stupid comment. We have some issues at the 2nd CB spot. The rest of them played pretty well.
I saw too many down field routes today, with zero shots across the middle. They are a heavy blitzing team, and I’m certain Riley knew this, yet they never adjusted. They also abandoned the running game game again, way too early. Even with Perine hurt, Mixon is a great talent, they just went completely away from it.

I have never once said we need a change at the top in all of Bob’s time. We have had some bad years and bad recruiting, poor assistants, because of their friendship with Bob and lost some big games at key times. Big game Bob is dead. The fire seems to be out.

We have never won an NC with his own players and 17 years between an NC is way too long. Tom Herman has taken a bunch of 2 and 3 star players and was able to kick the crap out of us today. You know this stopped any momentum on the recruiting trail. Houston lost a ton of players from last years squad and kicked our a$$es today.
I know gut reactions like this are bad, but is it not time to get rid of Stoops? My question is, what would Tom Herman have done with this team? If Charlie Strong is fired after this year and I believe he will, Texas will hire Herman and we will be screwed.

When the dust settled it appears pretty obvious we lost out in the Mike Stoops vs Brent Venables Defensive Coordinator decision.
Long time follower, first time poster. Shout-out to my wife for turning me on to you guys. Food for thought. My older brother works for OU Football and relayed a few things to me during fall camp. Offensive line is horrible. Zeus is overrated, not one guy had a good fall camp. Receivers weren’t much better. no one separated themselves in camp. Baker struggled in camp because he had no one to throw to and his line couldn’t block. I think we saw all those things play into fruition today. But I love my Sooners! Hopefully they can figure some things out.

Time is what we need for their O-Line to come together, but we only have one tune-up game before Ohio St. Time is a luxury we don’t have. We need a major attitude adjustment, and a small miracle for the o-line to start playing better.
I agree. I honestly think it doesn’t help that we abandoned the run and quick passes so early. It worked early and we completely went away from it.
We were dominant on the first drive, and then went flat. It was like we expected them to fold after we shoved it down their throat on one drive. The answer was in front of us and we went away from it.
the houston defense was hitting and playing with swag. we need more swag.

The defense really stunk and the offense was just ok. Had the defense done their job we wouldn’t have lost that game. You can’t let a team score on every possession and win.
Besides stupid penalties OU’s wasn’t that bad.
We got beat on third down consistently even when we didn’t have penalties.
Mikey has always had a problem with a good, mobile QB. I think every defensive coordinator does, but Mikey has no solution.
Crazy thing is he didn’t really attempt to run much. We just let him get comfy back there and tee off.
The defense was pretty good on 1st and 2nd down, but got absolutely murdered on 3rd down all day. No answer for their downfield passing game.
This is why you play games like these in game two and not game one. OU needed a “pre-season” game before you play someone like Houston and Ohio State. Unfortunately that game is next week vs. ULM.

Stupid, stupid penalties. Again. Some bad calls by refs, yes, but dumb plays by several players.
Play calling and offensive gameplan very, very questionable. (not talking mid 3rd quarter on, as you can throw out the plan at that point…)
Very little run gameplan, yet we dont have wr’s that can run routes to get open either?
Db’s make opponents look like they have multiple Michael Irvins.

I will say OU did stop the option attack from Houston , Greg Ward couldn’t run the ball. Now Penalties really killed us on defense today.
Our secondary is a weak point, the Buckeyes and Longhorns will have exceptional receiver talent, Austin won’t have a prayer unfortunately.
I think OU needs to put Will Johnson at Nickel back and sub in a LB when he’s out.

Will Johnson was a really good cover guy last year , i saw alot of promise from OU’s defense in the second half.
I havent read any of the last 300+ comments so its probably been mentioned but the one think that stands out to me the most is that our WRs couldnt get any separation. Often Baker was just staring downfield waiting and waiting to get open and nothing. Really disappointed in our WRs.
Clearly an issue. Baker spent way too much time running around waiting for someone to uncover.
I will tell you Baker is really frustrated with the WR’s right now. Hopefully OU lets the young Pubs like Miller , Green , and Jones get more playing time.

We did that on the first drive. Swing passes to the backs followed by timely runs. Worked to perfection. Then we inexplicably abandoned that successful strategy and didn’t come back to that as our base the rest of the game.
I agree. 12 rushing attempts between our 2 best players is no where near enough.
I think 3 things caused that; the clock late, the D couldn’t get off the field to let the O work, and Perine getting hurt early. I don’t like it either but I understand it.
Good points but we had an opportunity to come out in the 2nd half and establish it and we chose not to. There has to be a commitment to run. Maybe we could have helped our D get off the field with some ball control. If the WR’s are the inexperienced group and the RB’s are among the best in CFB; then there is no excuse for running your backs to get 12 carries. None
I’ve been saying for weeks that if our passing game is going to be good, one of the freshmen needs to step up and be the guy. Those we have from last year have already proven they can’t get separation nor catch the ball. Westbrook and Andrews are good receivers but can’t depend on my hem to get open when you really need them to.
I think we saw flashes from Dede and Andrews. A little more consistency and Mixon out of the backfield will be a nightmare to defend, especially when teams will also have to account for the run game. Two weeks to get it straight.
They lose 4 secondary guys..5 ol…best linebacker and best receiver and ou still gets thrashed…Bob just can’t get it done

Not worried about any rankings but I am worried that we might possibly start the season 1-3 going up against Fexas. Actually I never get upset when we lose to a better team (which we did), it’s the games that we give away that tear me up.

What the heck was Dakota doing on that play? When I saw that live I knew his head wasnt in the game. Kid was lost most of the day.
I guess everyone is shell shocked. Frankly, I’m not. We’ve seen this play many times. We look out of sync, Qb gets happy feet, secondary can’t cover their grandmother, won’t wrap so miss tackles, go away from what’s working and sticking with what doesn’t, using up timeouts like they are a burden, uneccesary penalties, no sense of urgency, and aboneheaded special teams call. Let me add, lack of emotion and some disorganization on the sideline and on the field.
We came out firing, but the defense couldn’t stop a 3rd and long. Houston scores on every possession including the last of the half. We’re down so I’m thinking we’ll regroup get focused and take control. We look good to start the 2nd half but then call timeouts losing any rhythm. Baker starts running around, receivers either can get open or don’t come help. Offense becomes ineffective. Defense starts playing better, ends up limiting award to 1 yard rushing, but surrenders 320 to a mediocre passer (remember Swopes last year).
Very disappointed in Bob, Mike, Lincoln, Bedenbaugh, Cooks and Gundy. They have a Ferrari that they’re driving like a Nash Rambler.
We all said the same thing, play clean we win…play smart, we dont. And they played like it was their first game ever.
Clean it up on 3rd down D and the game looks completely different. OU can work back into this thing and look good with a loss to a team that should now finish undefeated and in the top 10. Can’t blame the offense or LR. Between the score, clock, and Perine dinged up he had to lean on the pass.
We’ve been out coached for the last 8 years. I admit I was excited about the prospect of this year given the resurgence last year. If your honest though last year was all Baker not Stoops. Stoops continues to look done in my opinion. O line is out of sync and M. Stoops rushing only 3 lineman was asinine. I just keep thinking how many more years of my life do I have to wait to have a N.C., type of team again. 16 and counting
The front 7, aside from Obo’s penalties did a great job. We have had NC caliber teams several times in the last 16 years. The sky didn’t just fall, the defense didn’t get the job done on 3rd down. It will get fixed.
We just got smoked by a non power five team. It wasn’t as close as the score indicated.
Houston is legit, let’s not sit here and act like this was some kind of tune up game.

The refs certainly burned us a few times. But we got out – coached in my opinion. This game shouldn’t have been close.

Well it’s definitely not enjoyable being in Houston right now. I’m in shock still as most of you are. A lot of it feels like a blur but I certainly feel we LOST that game rather than Houston beating us. I mean my goodness, if we figure out what 3rd down defense means this game is over at half time.I surely didn’t believe GW would torch our secondary and was impressed with our defensive line play. Ready to get back to Vegas catch up on work and head out to Norman for the tOSU game! We beat ourselves, and I hate to use that as an excuse but it’s the truth. Was tough at the house; had to be tough in person. Offensive line play had a lot of miscues. Not sure if you were able to see much of the O Line play live, but you will see it if you re-watch the game on video.

We shut down their run game and Ward found a way to throw (something many said he could not do). Houston consistently converted 3rd and long and at least one 2nd and 20+. Catalon can play, Oliver is the real deal, and they have talent. They beat us and that game is over; Louisiana-Monroe up next. We have to get better on every snap.
