Open Post | Weekend, Feb. 12th – 14th (UPDATE Sun., 8:49 am)

Happy Friday Sooner fans!

Defensive Line Coaching Search: We’ve been told the plan as of now is for the staff to meet regarding defensive line coaching hire next Monday & Tuesday. We hope to know more following those meetings.

As we mentioned on Thursday, we’ve also been told the Sooners have already reached out to at least one potential candidate. They are expected to conduct informal phone interviews in the process of setting up face-to-face interviews with potential candidates. – (Brandon & Super K)

Isaiah Thomas: Yesterday many of you may have noted in-state 2017 DE/OLB Isaiah Thomas (Tulsa, OK) picked up multiple offers, including one from OU’s in-state rival Oklahoma State.

I spoke with Thomas last night who said that Mike Stoops invited him to visit Norman this weekend for the OU/KU game. Thomas said that while his mother will not be able to make the trip with him, he will instead be heading to Norman with one of his position coaches. It’s our suspicion the OU staff wants to get an up close look at Thomas and potentially extend an offer in person, but we’ll obviously have to wait and see on that. – (Super K)

Clyde Edwards-Helaire: OU did, however, extend an offer to star 2017 running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire (Baton Rouge, LA) on Thursday night. If you read Thursday’s Open Post, you should be somewhat familiar with the talented RB.

Following the offer, Helaire told TFB it didn’t take long for he and the family to start discussing the possibility of a visit. In fact, a possible trip to Norman for as soon as this weekend was even discussed. While those plans did not ultimately come to fruition, the fact there was such immediate interest in such a trip shows there is clearly some genuine interest there in OU on Edwards-Helaire’s part.

That said, one shouldn’t necessarily expect a commitment from the 2017 running back any time soon. “Right now I’m just enjoying everything and letting it all flow. I’ll stay weighing my options as time goes on.” – (Brandon & Super K)

Trey Coleman: Sticking with 2017 RBs from The Boot, the Sooners are in pursuit of another Louisiana standout Trey Coleman, who says he has been in near constant contact with RBs coach Jay Boulware. The relationship is strong enough that Coleman is set to visit OU, unofficially, this Saturday.

Coleman added that he has been given the impression an offer is very possible while he is in Norman, but admitted despite the connection with Boulware he’s still learning about the Sooners. “I don’t much about them yet. After the visit I will know what I like, for sure, but I’m looking forward to meeting the coaches.” He went on to say, “the other thing is the environment and if I can see myself playing there for four years.”

Will be interesting to see how things pan out with Coleman this weekend if for no other reason than JK Dobbins, another top 2017 RB, will be visiting as well. Coleman holds offers from Tennessee, Colorado State, Tulane and Grambling State, so far. – (Brandon)

DJ Johnson: With the loss of defensive line coach Diron Reynolds, one might assume the Sooners wouldn’t be looking to make any d-line offers at the moment. However it looks as though defensive coordinator Mike Stoops has taken the reins, for now, in terms of defensive line recruiting, and Thursday night M.Stoops extended an offer to 2017 defensive end, DJ Johnson (Sacramento, CA).

It was the first contract between Johnson & OU and from what the Cali product told TFB, M.Stoops seemed to make a great first impression. Johnson said he was “more than interested” in OU and that the Sooners DC “seems like a great person and coach.” Johnson added that OU is already talking to him about a visit, which he is working to set up in the near future. Needless to say, the staff seems to have hit the ground running on the 2017 class, defensive line coach or not. – (Brandon)

Addison Gumbs: Last night, Demetric Warren of VarsityPreps.com reported Oklahoma had offered 2017 DE/OLB, Addison Gumbs (Hayward, CA). Gumbs, I’m told, was offered by Tim Kish and there seems to be strong initial interest from both Gumbs and his family, in part due to OU’s previous successes in the state of California and the scheme fit. – (Super K)

UPDATE (Sat., 9:00 am): 2017 DE Earnest Brown tells us he is on his way to Norman. He’s a guy that could very well pick up an offer this weekend. Brown is heading up with his mother and siblings.

Tre Brown will be heading up to Norman today as well and he’s also guy to keep an eye on for a possible offer.

Another guy you’ll want to keep an eye on is Isaiah Thomas. We expect him to receive an offer as well. Thomas tells me he is on his way to Norman right now.

2017 WR out of Desoto, Laviska Shenault is also heading to Norman today and he’s another player that could be receiving an OU offer.

WR Charleston Rambo is also on his way to Norman. Rambo already holds an offer from OU and this will make his third trip to Norman…

UPDATED (9:57 am): Couple star Desoto players on their way to Norman.

Ingram already holds an OU offer. Shenault, again, is a guy we believe may receive an offer today.

UPDATE (Sat., 8:16 pm): Sooners have offered 2017 DT, Greg Rogers (Las Vegas, NV). Rogers texted me a bit ago and said, “#OUDNA”. I took that as a good sign.

– UPDATE (Sun., 8:49 am): Credit TFB reader RBear for first posting this in the comments, but also wanted to include it here just in case anyone missed it below. Recent OU running back offer winds up committing to LSU after all.
