Public universities are open books by law. Boren knows he is obligated to be public about anything and everything OU. He’s not speaking as a Big12 representative or spokesperson. He’s speaking as the head of OU.

He is very good at it. IMO he’s been the best president OU has had since at least 1970. I know Cross was popular earlier, I don’t know how productive he was. I really don’t care for propping up the Big 12 with weak schools, and all of the candidates I’ve seen mentioned aren’t going to bring much to the conference. I’d rather say adios to the Big 12.
Cross’ architecture dna was lackluster at best. Some of the worst buildings at OU were built on his watch. Just bad.

I hope Boren keeps doing exactly what he is doing. OU is better off in a functioning Big 12, and we aren’t far off from that. Gotta think long term. Add two teams, try to get the Big 12 network, and then see what happens to the ACC. Seems like they may collapse before the Big 12, which would make any number of attractive teams available to the Big 12 and other conferences.
Where the ACC is weak in football, they are strong in basketball and academics. Also, Miami is a sleeping giant.
ACC football is as strong as anyone’s, Clemson, FSU at the top. Most conferences are stacked at the top with bottom dwellers like anyone else.
And they have some kind of rotating schedule worked out with Notre Dame.
As for those wanting to go to the Big 10, why? We have OU and UT. They have Ohio State and Michigan. We have Baylor and TCU, and even OSU are pretty good. They have MSU and ?????
I just don’t get it. They are better set up as a conference right now, but they don’t have better teams/programs than the Big 12. The Big 12 just needs to make some moves to tighten up the conference, such as expansion (doesn’t have to be elite teams), a network (exposure, $’s), and then see what happens with the other conferences. I like where we’d be positioned.
I’d argue that Cincy and BYU/UCONN/????? will have as much success nationally as teams like Maryland, Rutgers, Mizzou, Colorado, and Nebraska.
This only getting here through the posted link is a sophisticated ruse by Jordan to see who really pays attention. He is sifting the chaff from the wheat within his supporters and the TFBers – brilliant! 🙂 But in case it is just an interweb hiccup, we understand.

expansion to the pacific northwest sucks ! if this dipwad conference is going to expand , it should be a 4 team expansion : San Diego St & Fresno St along with UCF & USF….that gives the conference better recruiting inroads to either coast where the population is ever growing…….

One of the things that has worked for the Big 12, prior to adding WVU at least, was having a compact location of teams. Adding some 2nd/3rd tier teams from the coast isn’t the answer.

For now, 10 is just as good as 10 + 2 underling schools. There is a coming change with the BI6 seeking members (most likely Virginia and Georgia Tech). The grant of rights in the ACC has some problems with no ACC network. If there is a play, the SEC will likely move also. Much better choices after this than now.
The problem is that the B12 leadership has shown no ability to move in such a situation. There is also the fact that the B12 conference is paying a lot less to its members than either the SEC or B1G. That means we get the leftovers in that case.

Can’t deny that Bob. The question is whether at this time it is worth adding two lower-tier schools and diluting what money there is. I am skeptical that even a championship game will add enough cash to offset the 1/12 versus 1/10 payoff. I think the BI6 with their new contract talks may just blowup the ACC. Again, I would just wait another season to see.
Should be pretty easy to do the math. I think it’s public info what each Big 12 team got in terms of a payout this past year. I think it’s public data what the CCG used to earn the conference. We can guestimate what adding two teams like Cincy and UCONN (or whomever) would add in terms of tv revenues. I bet it’s pretty close.
Cush, there is a clause in the TV contract that says if we expand, so does the TV revenue. Thus, we don’t dilute the money each school is currently making. Also, adding a championship game would add more $ along with a conf channel. We would make more money along with less travel costs incurred by Athletics dept.
Also, a championship game provides us a round robin like the other conferences. Iowa didn’t play MSU/tOSU/Michigan in conf play. Bama never plays Flordia/Georgia or any one tuff in east which has been down. It helps.
On the other hand, if we go to another conf. I’m curious how we will be treated. OU will not be the lead dog and the grass might not be greener. I don’t have a strong opinion on staying or going but I see both sides of argument.

No doubt. That is why I said conf channel which is saying LHN will go away. To me, LHN will not go away unless ESPN pulls the plug. Even if they do, there will be a payout and Horns still come out smelling like a rose. I agree with Cush, throw our demands out and see what happens.
ESPiN could play hardball. It would be in their best interest if OU joined the SEC.
Pluses/Minuses in SEC. Not sure how we would be treated as Bama is the lead dog and we would just be another team. Not downgrading us, just an old conf with old guards. From a financial/travel/exposure, SEC would be my #1 choice. ESPN would love it if we joined and they would push the SEC that much more. Imagine the marketing, OU vs LSU or Bama, ESPN would be on cloud nine.
You can’t blame them either, they are raking in the cash even if the network itself is a failure. ESPN is kicking themselves in the @$$ over that deal.
TV is a wash. T3 rights & OU channel versus the “league channel” is not likely to be a wash. Gain from a championship, but split the NCAA BB money and bowl money (not likely to get more bowl teams). So if the money is a complete wash (more seems very unlikely until the big 12 network is really running well), the only reason for adding 2 teams is the playoff and “stability.” IF (big if) the other 9 schools agree with all three parts of Boren’s “deal,” it will happen. If it does not, things may work out as well or better after other conferences make decisions.
I am NOT a move now, rah, rah SEC, or BI6 is where we belong with Nebraska person! It just seems that sometimes, letting things develop will make for more and/or better choices.
Also, we probably make the expansion teams take a lesser cut than the established Big 12 teams for a few years. That’ll help not dilute the $’s too.
Short term, I believe the exact $ count is less important. The whole thing is Boren’s gambit to get a conference network and stop LHN. If only adding two teams and a playoff game happens without a conference network, it is a failure.
Thanks for keeping us well informed David Boren. It’s our right as a public institution. Your alumni base wants to know what the future holds for the University of Oklahoma not the University of Big12.
OU football isn’t a peon program, so don’t accept mediocre conditions that horns want the Big12 to accept. If OU leaves, the Big12 folds like a tent.

Don’t think the President cares about blowing up the Big XII. I think he cares about putting OU in the best position for long-term, stable success, both academically and athletically. I don’t think the Big XII’s future without OU has anything to do with it.

Just as OU needs to be out from under the shadow of Texas so do the Sooners need the flexibility of not having OSU tag along as a mandatory 2 for 1 package should OU switch conferences in the distant future. OU is a large enough university it doesn’t need OSU for support ….And distancing the Sooners from the Pukes would help instate recruiting , too.
All I would say is too start voting in the Sooners for state reps.

I don’t think we know enough for you to say that, especially about Joe C.
And I don’t think Boren wants to move, UNLESS he doesn’t get what he thinks the Big 12 needs for continued success. Will he get it? No idea. But I think if he doesn’t we look to leave. If he does, I think he’ll do everything he can to make the Big 12 work long term.
I’m pretty confident in what I’m saying, but I think you are correct that President Boren will support staying in the Big XII if he gets the 3 things he’s laid out.
If not, he will push very hard to move. The stability, grant money and prestige are too important to the University, to him and (fortunately or unfortunately) to his legacy.
He can see retirement on the horizon now and is making it a priority to get the University where he feels it will be best served in the long run, in terms of stability, resources, etc.
No doubt he would kill for AAU recognition.
SD, have you taken a close look at the changes in where we have been recruiting the last couple years? It is a roadmap of where BS thinks he needs to prepare for the future.
Where do you think that is, west? I feel like we’ve also recruited Florida and Louisiana harder in recent years. And the Northeast, to a lesser degree. Not sure I’d read too much into that.
I know it sounds a bit like a conspiracy theory, but I’ve heard comments within the athletic department specifically stating that they are building contacts and preparing to recruit in the B1G territories, if needed.
There certainly has been more activity in the Mid-Atlantic area. Getting our OT from Illinois could be a fluke or because we were paying attention to Michigan.
Anyway, time will tell, I guess.

Expansion, maybe with the right data numbers, maybe you can convince the fans to put their money where their butts sit in the expanded stadium, maybe the networks to pay out more money for tv rights, but for the longhorns to shut down their network? Don’t see it happening, especially over anything someone from Oklahoma says.

Have ‘followed AtlantaSooner for many years at many sites. He generally provides some good info and this early breakdown of the top kids OU is in on is no different. Been recruiting Anthony Hines for 2 years. Hoping it pays off big.

I would very much agree if I felt it were anything more than talk/empty threats. Now nothing would make me happier than for DBo to make me look like an idiot for ever doubting him, but until that happens I’ll have to see it be more than just talk to actually believe it.
I agree with your skepticism. Still, in July after this big June confab, he might be forced to start looking hard at a move. It is doubtful that he can make an outright declaration of that intent, but I would hope some real action gets going behind the scenes.

The main problem with moving to another conference seems to be little brother. The problem in the past always stemmed from the state legislators prohibiting OU moving without OSU moving with them. I don’t see conference change without a package deal.
I suspect there would be legal issues with this type of legislation.
Interesting story on Ronda Rousey. Judging by where her heads at and after watching that whole fight ( Its out on youtube now ). I think shes one more fight and done. Holms is that much better.

I felt for her a bit. Yeah she came across cocky and arrogant at times, but during that interview. When she came to realize that fighting all she knows and all she has done where life her walls just crumbled. We see it all the time with athletes, all they know is football or basketball.
I think one of her biggest obstacles is going to be, going from one of the most recognizable faces in the world to wanting to be anonymous. I hope she doesn’t end up on talk shows later on in life just because. It would be nice to see her go back to Judo and helps develop the Olympic teams.

I use McCormick’s Grill Mate Montreal Steak seasoning.
That’s what my wife likes on hers. But I’ve almost got her completely weened off of it with just salt and pepper. Of course it helps when you buy filet or rib eye that was just cut the same day you are grilling it.
It does help. Have you ever grilled a two-week dry-aged filet? If you haven’t, do yourself a favor and find someone who sells beef. We go in each year and split a cow with friends. You won’t want to share beef that’s been dry aged.
Yes I have. That is some tender goodness right there! I like to grill rib eye more than filet because it is hard to find aged filet around here. Rib eye fresh is pretty darn good! I smoked a rack or ribs on my Traeger the day I got it, they were awesome!

The treager I have has an auger on the side opposite of the stack. You buy pellets from ACE or one of those places or online. I use Hickory or Mesquite and it’s a great for any kind of food.
Sales Pitch – My neighbor used to be on a traveling BBQ team (texas) and he gave me a ton a shi- for buying an electric pit. I smoked a pork butt and when I took it off the grill, he had a bite. One week later he has one in his backyard. I bet I’ve sold over 30 in the neighborhood. Costco has a special on these once a year and they set up a place in the store. Due to all my sons friends, I have the 36″ cause on weekends, I have a lot of mouths to feed and they are becoming big kids.

They have a hopper you put the wood in, then it has an auger at the bottom that feeds it to the fire pit. No you cannot use charcoal.

Last year the following were 1st year starters at their position: Baker (kind of), Samia, Brown, Alvarez, Andrews, Dede and Baxter. This year we only have 2 1st year starters (both OGs). Agree or Disagree?
Agree, I think from his perspective Shep and Ty were clear cut senior leaders that he looked up to. Not any multiple year starters with that kind of leadership heading to Spring. Totally agree with you though. I’m thankful and confident he and Samaje are up for the challenge.

Layoffs should be higher imho. Right the ship on these INFLATED pay scale rosters and get them back to reality. Oil and gas at $35 at one time was a smile in the office. Good for upstream and good for downstream. A geophysicist shouldn’t be at $275k to $300k plus bonuses in any oil and gas market in my opinion. Layoffs will result in those $300ks being hired back at $175k to $200k. Right the ship in personnel and procured items where oil and gas can smile again at $40 to $50 depending on conventional or unconventional.
I’ve said on here many times that I’m not in favor of adding 2 no-name teams to the Big 12 just for the sake of getting back to 12 teams. But for those of you that think it is a must, pick two out of Cincinnati, Boise State and BYU and tell me how you would divide all of the teams into 2 divisions from both a geographical and competitive standpoint. Texas, Texas Tech, Baylor, TCU, OSU and OU in the South division and everyone else in the North is a total non-starter for me. Yet, geography, for travel purposes, is how it’s been said the divisions will be determined.
You might have to leave UT BU and TCU KU KSU in south, move OU OSU north with the rest to at least get some balance or a variance of this….OU north, KU south….
Take 4 teams. Cinci., UConn, UCF, and USF, put them and Iowa
St., in the east with WVU.

My handicap is that I am no good at golf.
It’s not about being good. It is about enjoying the time. I enjoy going out and playing with my father, father-in-law, and my wife. It is usually a great day, even if we have a crappy game.
You and me both brother. When I was a “sales” guy, I was single digit. I am the head guy now and it’s 16 and still climbing. Too inconsistent when one does not play often. Just to show you, back in the fall I had a front nine that went:
double, double, birdie, double, par (#1 handicap hole), double (17 handicap par 3), birdie, double, triple (6 on a par 3) – I have to take a break now after just thinking about the weird shots and god awful chips.
Before my kids were born I was single digit and could crush my drives, almost always in the fairway. After they came along, I’m ecstatic to break 90. My short game has improved as I get older, I think from patience, but the rest of my game has went to crap. Of course where I play golf you might see your ball but it is lost because it has a rattle snake by it. Not much fun if you aren’t in the short grass.

Heck yes. All the time. I also use my 7-iron near the green. And on our course the green side bunkers are great for allowing you to use a putter to get out of them. I love doing that.
I hate those kind of bunkers.

I will often do that, but where I play, the greens are small, elevated and have thick grass around them most of the time. When I was better, I would trap the ball with a sand wedge and do the one-hop and stop thing. Alas, all shot take practice and that takes time.
I played two tough courses last summer, the same weekend: I had a total of 8 birdies. I shot an 81 and 84. I played the next weekend and shot 98. Arrgh. I wanted to quit playing forever.

Didn’t get married till I was 38. I was playing or practicing 6 days a week and was scratch. I played on the BBQ Texas tour for 5 years but those guys were really good. Once married, I had 2 kids in 15 months and I’ve coached youth sports for 10 years now. I play maybe 10 – 12 times a year. I will shot 75 one day and 85 the next.
What people don’t understand is when you get older, it ain’t about golf, it’s about being around your buds and having a beverage. I play barefoot now and it doesn’t matter. Feels good and I have a good time and they normally tell me what I shot. I don’t care as long as we had some good laughs.

Best time is in the evening as there is nothing better to me then finishing while the sun is setting. I’m at peace and very relaxed.
I prefer just when the sun comes up. I want to be the one on the first green knocking the dew off the grass. Plus in the evening here in the summer it’s over 105 degrees and the wind is blowing about 50MPH.
105 don’t bother me but 50 mph of wind is no savvy.
Yeah, that’s the part that bothers me too. The wind here starts calm and continues to go up throughout the day.
