Open Post | Weekend, Jul. 17th – 19th (UPDATE Sun., 8:53 am)

Johncarlo Valentin: Earlier this week, Oklahoma offered 2016 offensive lineman Johncarlo Valentin (Philadelphia, PA). I had a chance to chat with Valentin and it appears he has a connection to OU. Valentin tells me that he and former Sooner/current Washington Redskin offensive lineman Trent Williams “are like brothers.” Apparently Williams is the person that passed Valentin’s name on to Oklahoma and the staff liked what they saw, and for good reason. Valentin currently holds offers from schools like Auburn, Michigan, South Carolina, UCLA, Wisconsin and several others.

He’s a big, athletic guy with a lot of power in his hands. He can really move people.

Valentin told me that he is working on setting up his official visits and is looking at visiting Oklahoma on the weekend of the West Virginia game (a game that both DeMarkus Acy and Shurod Thompson Jr. have already set up official visits for as well). – (Super K)

Chanse Sylvie: Earlier this week I spoke to OU 2016 safety target Chanse Sylvie, who visited Norman this past winter but has not been able to make a return trip since. Sylvie is in the process of setting up his official visits which so far include Arizona, Michigan, Nebraska & Notre Dame.

I asked Sylvie if Oklahoma will also get an official visit, and he said that he’s only using his official visits on schools he hasn’t already seen. But he also said this should not be taken as indication that he isn’t highly interested in OU. In fact, Sylvie said he is very much interested in both OU and TCU. But again, since he’s already visited both he wants to use his officials on schools he hasn’t had a chance to see yet.

Sylvie also also indicated that while there are no concrete plans to do so as of yet, he still hopes to try to take a return visit to Norman before the summer is over.

In talking with Sylvie, I personally get the sense that Oklahoma and TCU are still the frontrunners. Obviously he’s visiting a number of schools and that can make things difficult to gauge, but as it stands now I’d say OU’s stiffest competition is coming from the Horned Frogs. – (Super K)

– Team News | Baker Mayfield: For the straight third week, Mayfield has not participated in 7-on-7 workouts. One of the issues this has caused is limited 7-on-7 reps for the rest of the team. I’ve been told by sources that when a quarterback is out, as Mayfield is, the team does not attempt to increase a quarterback’s reps (i.e. Trevor Knight and/or Cody Thomas), they simply shorten the 7-on-7 session.

Which makes sense because you obviously don’t want to overwork your healthy QBs, but it obviously limits the repetitions of the other players. Which is clearly not ideal when you’re in the first year of installing a new offense. – (Super K)

Du’Vonta Lampkin: I know it seems like this Du’Vonta Lampkin saga won’t come to an end, but I wanted to let you know I have been told it looks like things could get resolved soon. I should have more on this later. – (Super K)

Team News | Rodney Anderson: A bit of good news on freshman running back, Rodney Anderson. I’m told he has come off crutches and is walking on his own power now. I am also told, however, that he is not yet working out with the team, but it does sound like he’s getting close. – (Super K)

– UPDATE (Fri., 8:05 am): Just a reminder in case you missed it earlier this week. OU will be rolling out the red carpet for 2016 LB Bryce Younquist, who is expected to be in Norman today.

UPDATE (Fri,, 11:04 am): I spoke to former OU LB, Reggie Barnes and he tells me that his son 2017 DB Robert Barnes and 2016 OU CB Obi Eboh will be in Norman next weekend. Eboh has been to Norman in the past but only received his offer from OU this summer so a return trip is obviously a step in the right direction. Robert received his OU offer after a satellite camp in June. – (Super K)

– UPDATE (Fri., 11:21 am): Brandon has confirmed Bryce Youngquist made to Norman and is on campus touring things as we speak. We’ll update you with more as it becomes available.

– UPDATE (Fri., 1:00 pm): Sooners extend offer to 2017 DB Derrek Pitts (6’3″ 190 – Charleston, WV).

– UPDATE (Fri., 2:03 pm):

– UPDATE (Fri., 4:46 pm):

– UPDATE (Sun., 8:43 am): I’m assuming most of these made their way into the comments at some point yesterday, but just in case any got missed. Here are several updates from Saturday.

You may recall K saying a week or two back that South Carolina was probably the favorite to land 2016 CB Tre Jackson.

Another miss for OU with top 2017 LB. And could Baylor be on any more of a roll right now?

– UPDATE (Sun., 8:53 am): Kind of figured this is where OU would be coming out of the weekend, but maybe a little more time will help to increase the impression OU made.

      Sooner!

      • RocketCitySooner says:

I attended the KSU game last fall. It was the first time since 1969 that I had a chance to attend a game. It was my wife’s first college game to attend. We loved the back and forth Boomer – Sooner Chant. We certainly didn’t do that back in the 60s.

  • Lincoln Hawk says:

Just curious, are there no other players (former QB’s in high school for instance) that could step in and take some reps in the 7-on-7 just to get the rest of the team some reps?

    • Jordan Esco says:

They have the walk-on kid from Heritage Hall that surely is getting some reps, and I’m sure they have some kids that played QB in h.s. like you suggested. But would those even really be quality reps? I suppose you could make an argument either way.

      • Lincoln Hawk says:

Gotcha, I was thinking more of just for the route running and things like that with the new offense. I figured something was better than nothing but I know that’s not always the case.

    • Indy_sooner says:

Connor McGinnis, the heritage hall preferred walk-on QB may be getting some reps as well, I know some were high on him

    • SoonerfanTU says:

That was going to be my question. Even if the HH kid isn’t throwing good balls, it’s still letting the receivers run routes and all that jazz.

  • boomersooner says:

Seems strange for a kid to not want to officially visit a game day. I’m sure he can unofficial for us and tcu, but that’s a lot of weekends for visits

    • Jordan Esco says:

could always come for an unofficial on a game day, fwiw

      • boomersooner says:

That’s what the last sentence says but that seems busy to add to your own season. Hope he makes the right decision for him and has a good support group

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

Sounds like the kid has a good head on his shoulders. Weigh all his options then make a decision. One he’d likely stick with.

      • boomersooner says:

Oh yeah for sure. I’m glad he’s doing his due diligence. Just struck me that 5 officials plus 2 unofficials to his 2 leaders is a lot. Hope he has fun

        • RocketCitySooner says:

I don’t know what I would do. Part of me says that if I were a four/five star coming out of high school, I would take as many visits as I possible could. It would be such an opportunity. Another part of me says, BS. I would take one official visit to OU and I would take so many unofficial visits to OU that I’d have to rent a room.

          • boomersooner says:

There you go. Haha. But man, that would be sweet to visit some of the big boys for game day. Just weird, I thought, that you wouldn’t wanna see game day of your leaders, unless, like I said, he unofficials. And what bigger boy can you have than OU

          • RocketCitySooner says:

Sure, it would have been sweet. From the time I was in grade school, there was no question in my mind about where I would go to college. I was OU all the way. Never considered another school. Some of my earliest memories are sitting on an old fashioned ice cream freezer while Dad turned the crank. OU football on the radio. Those were the Wilkinson days when the Big Eight was known as “OU and the Seven Dwarfs”.

          • boomersooner says:

That’s awesome. Wish I could have gone

  • Indy_sooner says:

OP *AND* and Update already. Damn

  • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

OU will be rolling out the crimson carpet for Bryce.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Can we please get a commit this weekend? ESPN headlines USC, Baylor, Michigan, and Bama getting commitments. Can we get someone to fall in love with OU?

      • Jeff says:

        Probably won’t happen this weekend

      • Stephen Dale says:

this staff can’t draw flies until the team proves something on the field again…..

        • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Well it seems that’s the case. But isn’t BS and OU allowed to have an 8-5 once in 15 years? I mean, these kids are so fickle, they don’t know the history or what?

  • Marty McFly says:

Open Post AND Morning update??? “YOU’RE THE BEST, AROUND. NOTHING’S GONNA EVER KEEP YOU DOWN, YOU’RE THE BEST, AROUND!”

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

Can we get a commit from Youngquist today please?

  • Jason Vos says:

Best cure for dead arm is rest, no need to risk further injury when you have the time to rest it. I wouldn’t let him throw till August imo

  • Jason Vos says:

any update on Jordan Smallwood’s injury?

  • David Raath says:

Any word on the progress of Courtney Garnett? Would like to have him ready to go and competing for a spot in the rotation along the DL.

  • AlvinMack55 says:

I watched some of Valentin’s film yesterday. That guy is going to be a stud guard for whomever he plays for. He moves well for a big man and plays with a mean streak. And, Like K said, he’s STRONG. Hopefully Coach B can land him.

  • John Garner says:

Mayfield’s injury is beginning to sound more serious than muscle fatigue.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Well, the reported time table was no throwing until August. If he is not throwing by August, then we should hear about season-ending surgery. Shoulder fatigue requires rest.

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

    Anyone ready for Akron?

  • BleedCrimson says:

    G-Day minus 50
We have been blessed with 4 guys to be named All-Americans to wear this number!!!

  • AlvinMack55 says:

So does anyone know if this Mayfield injury is truly affecting the QB battle or will it still be decided this fall in camp? I’m not aware of how much the off-season workouts and such factor in to the decision.

    • Krys Allen says:

My guess would be if they were even before the injury that the extra reps for TK would definitely put him in the drivers seat. I however do think that the competition will still be open come August, but if BM is coming off of shoulder issues he will be rustier and just overall not in top form.

  • vargo05 says:

I’m gonna guess Baker hurt his shoulder making a dance video. Only real logical conclusion.

  • SoonerMGB56 says:

I’ve been vocal on here as being an advocate of spending more time and resources on recruiting Oklahoma kids. Look at this video, and this is why I believe in OK kids. The heart, the commitment, the drive, the leadership.
Heck, I’m ready to do the Oklahoma drill!!!!!!

    • SoonerMGB56 says:

Also after the Davis video, there are links to others. Watch the top 10 RB’s vid if you want to get FIRED UP!!!

    • Ed Cotter says:

Boz, who played HS ball in Texas, calls himself an Okie because of his Grandfather, who lived in OK, and Boz would spend summers with him. Just thought I would add that.

    • roygbell says:

I’m with you on taking Oklahoma kids. However, the video you posted is way out of date. The simple facts are that Oklahoma High Schools aren’t producing the numbers of FBS talent as they did decades past. For the most part the inner Oklahoma City High Schools aren’t producing lots of players. Money, is a huge issue in OKC. Coaches in the inner city aren’t paid sufficiently to recruit and retain good coaches. Facilities are a mess.

Neither Edmond or Norman are producing the talent as in the past. We don’t get the kids from SE Oklahoma as we used to either. So, it isn’t all on the coaches ignoring Oklahoma.

      • roygbell says:

Just to add some numbers. We have four kids from Oklahoma City High Schools with two of them scholarship players [Shepard and Sunderland] and two walk-ons.

From the rest of the metro area we have have about 13 with roughly 10 being walk-ons and three as scholarship players and that is counting DJ Ward who is listed as being from Moore, but actually from Lawton.

It is not a pretty picture.

Just think about all the great kids we used to get from Muskogee, McAlinter, Ada. No Enid kids and the SW Oklahoma kids are few.

I don’t think we have missed out on many great Oklahoma players over the last few years.

        • Rene Goupillaud says:

OK used to have a top 5 running back every 2 or 3 years. We’ve had some nice backs, but you might have to go back to Dewell Brewer to find one considered a top 5 back.

Key for us is to land the top 3 or 4 OK kids every year and make sure we get the occasional Gerald McCoy level player.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

OU doesn’t need to get an in-state rb…Peterson, Murray, Perine, Mixon…

        • SavageSoonerEsq says:

Yeah, and I’m not sure schools in SE OK like Ada, McAlister, Durant, Ardmore and Idabel (and other comparable schools) are turning out talent like they used to.

      • SoonerMGB56 says:

I’m not sure I buy the fact that Oklahoma isn’t “producing” OU level talent. I think there are factors, including the fact that we’re not able to retain the level of coaches, due to financial considerations. Also, the 7 on 7 programs aren’t prevalent like where I live in North Texas, nor are the private trainers like JD Runnels. The economy and population don’t support those types of trainers.
So as a result, a lot of the Oklahoma talent is raw. But I don’t buy that there are fewer elite athletes than a couple of decades ago. Rather the polish is lacking. However, if you can get elite athletes that are raw as football players, but have the athleticism to become elite college players (and beyond) bring ’em in, redshirt them and coach ’em up.
Predominently, IMO, the OK kids will pay dividends in terms of their commitment, work ethic, leadership and love for the program.

      • Rene Goupillaud says:

I think you could add that the game has changed a lot since Switzer’s days. Players are bigger and faster, especially on the DL. States in the SEC seem to produce a lot more players who meet today’s requirements.

        • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Size doesn’t equate to talent. I’ll take 2 Strikers for one Khondro.

      • Mustvid says:

Totally don’t agree. I have a person very close to me that is a respected high school player talent evaluator and he has watched film on more players than most and there a ton of kids that are D1 prospects in Oklahoma. The issue is that these kids aren’t attending camps and don’t have video so they are unknowns. That’s why I like this sight. These guys are helping Okie kids gain visibility and we are seeing that more kids from Oklahoma are D1 quality players.
For whatever reason Bob has always overlooked or slowed played Okie kids and I’ve never understood why. He should be signing 7-10 kids a year from Oklahoma. If they are 3 star players in Oklahoma or Texas but the Oklahoma kid bleeds crimson and cream it should be a no-brainer. We need more of what we heard Steve Davis talking about in the locker room. We won the NC in 2000 with more Okie kids then we’ve had on the team since.

        • SoonerMGB56 says:

Agree. I’d be ok with 6-7 Oklahoma kids per year. I still think Oklahoma produces that level of talent. Maybe 2 or 3 of those are a bit raw and need a redshirt. But I think that if our scholarship roster is at 25 – 30 Oklahomans, we’ll be a better team for it.

          • Stephen Dale says:

OU is going to have to put forth more effort in this state since out of state recruiting is abysmal right now…..letting the Brown kid get away to TCU doesn’t help……..

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

And last year the Okie kid that went to UCLA.

        • D Hunter Sanchez says:

I had some doubts about the recent talent in Oklahoma, but hearing an interview with U Meyer talking about not needing a roster full of 4 and 5 stars to win a title changed my outlook. He said many kids who were the stars of their HS teams do not work hard on special teams and other areas. You need kids that want to do the little things that win games. The Okie kids grow up loving OU and the 2-3 star guys will run through a break wall just to put on the crimson and cream. But BS said in 09′ we are a national program and we recruit nationally.

          • Mustvid says:

I agree. There may not be many 5 star rated players in Oklahoma. But when you understand the fallacy of that system and you see the P5 conference coaches recruiting 3 stars kids from Oklahoma, you can understand that there is more talent there than what we’ve been lead to believe.

I watched Barry expand his recruiting from regional to national and that’s when he started having player behavior issues. Now, it may not be connected issue but then again it might. I just see many of the national kids interested more in playing at a school they can show case their talent at to help them get drafted higher.

I think Bob’s strategy is wrong and I think we’ve seen the results over the last ten years. I’m not saying we haven’t won championship because of the lack of Okie kids but I do think it has a residual effect on the team culture and the impact in the locker room which ultimately effects the on field play. I’ve certainly watched too many games where the players don’t look motivated or inspired.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

I am trying to grasp the connection you made between out of state/nationally recruited kids and in-state players. Are you suggesting, for instance, that players from say Cali have a different upbringing and therefore perhaps a different outlook on things and this negatively affects the team? This is a very interesting concept.

You know, out here (Cali), people are anti-Christian and anti-conservative in a lot of ways…Just saying.

          • Mustvid says:

I just saw what happened to the program when Barry moved from a regional recruiting strategy to a national strategy. It was these kids for the most part who got in trouble and ulitmately created the perception of an out of control program. I think some kids from other states come here to show case their talents to move to the NFL and they don’t truly care about playing for Oklahoma.

I’m certainly not saying it has anything to do with religion or upbringing or cultural difference between states. I might be over simplfying things. It’s more of observation of similar decisions by Switzer and Stoops.

We’ve been hearing for a while about locker room issues and some have questioned player motivation. Does it have anything to do with recruiting less kids from Oklahoma that bleed Crimson and Cream? My observations are anecdotal and not based on any research in the least.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

            Fair enough. It’s possible.

  • Ryan says:

So we have no walk-on qb’s right now on campus?

    • KJ1123 says:

I think there was supposed to be one from Texas, but I dont think he made it to campus yet.

    • Jordan Esco says:

Yes, the Connor McGinnis kid from Heritage Hall

    • JD says:

Think the new walk on can’t practice until school starts

      • Jordan Esco says:

I don’t believe that is the case, but I don’t know that for 100% fact.

        • JD says:

I seem to recall a walk on that couldn’t work out a few years ago until school started…not sure about preferred guys or guys going to summer school…so I could be wrong

      • Cush Creekmont says:

Since the NCAA rules are more confusing than an Alice-in-Wonderland maze with no exit, anything is possible, but I can’t see, for player-led workouts, how the NCAA can bar a willing, non-scholarship player.

        • JD says:

I hear ya about the ncaa but they I believe they gave coaches 8 hours a week for 8 weeks in the summer for film and workouts a year or two ago

      • Exiled In Ohio says:

I believe all players, whether scholarship or not, have to be enrolled for something in the summer. If he’s enrolled, I would assume he can practice.

        • JD says:

You might be right…just recall a guy a few years ago had to wait for school to start..summer school might count too

      • KJ1123 says:

I don’t think any of the guys who came in within the last few weeks are practicing but Im not 100%. Next week is the last week of summer workouts so they may just keep them out until camp.

        • JD says:

Yeah you have to be here for a certain amount of time before you can practice…basically you have to be cleared by Smitty andor the training staff

Man, I honestly didn’t even consider that as not being the case. If (and I say IF b/c I have to assume he is) he’s not there…..that would be a serious ‘wow’

          • Exiled In Ohio says:

I was just thinking about K’s article from a few days back about Butch Jones and the whole staff standing outside when a prospect arrived. We gotta do something to overcome the Oregon wow factor. “We’re building a new weight room and locker room, and it will be almost as cool as Oregon’s” just isn’t going to cut it with some of these kids. Hopefully Youngquist is looking for something more than just eye candy.

          • KJ1123 says:

True, it’s not enough to just have “new facilities” now days, kids want to see all the bells and whistles. The only thing the OU facilities have that is better than OR is the trophies and the memorabilia. If you take that and put it in the type of showroom OR has then that would be impressive to see.

There is a salmon QB on campus too right? Not in the sense of will be start but in the sense of that is a 3rd team for 7on7 instead of just 2.

  • Daddy R says:

Just a curious question, but why can’t HRL (Hot Rod Lincoln) throw some of those 7 on 7 sessions? Seems he would be qualified enough, and might even be a good teaching tool for the other qb’s.

    • Lincoln Hawk says:

Not 100% but I think Schmitty runs the 7 on 7’s not the position coaches. I think Riley only gets so many hours with them in the summer.

Stoops looks like he’s lost some weight. We need 170 lb bob back

    • Boom says:

How did the visit go, you know of any details?

    • EasTex says:

I firmly believe that Bob’s hip replacement has and will make an impact on his overall well being and demeanor.

      • Slim Sooner says:

I believe you’re right. Man was in some serious pain last couple years that wasn’t just due to the losses on the field. A healthier Bob can only be a big plus for the team and overall.

        • EasTex says:

I was watching the replay of a game from this past season and as he was walking towards the bench after chewing on an official, I could tell from the way he was walking that his hip was bothering him.
The pain he was having to endure along with all his normal duties, he must feel like a kid again without it.

  • Stephen says:

Jordan brought up a good point on Twitter, why doesn’t OU hold a “Friday Night Lights” sort of event?

    • EasTex says:

      What exactly is that?
I don’t recall such an event in the book, laughed at the schtoopid movie and never watched the tv series.

      • Stephen says:

I was trying to find anything on their website that explains it but had no luck. It’s basically just another football camp but with fancy marketing that is new and different. That’s how I viewed it. Someone else can probably explain this better than I can.

      • BleedCrimson says:

I think you could be correct, but I believe (could be just hoping) that Simmons has made huge strides with the players development. I think that when you have too many coaches for a section, it can create confusion. By putting all of the DB’s under Simmons’ direction, it should create harmony and understanding that we did not see last year. Just my 2 ¢

        • Sooner Ray says:

I have felt the same way.

        • EasTex says:

I do wonder who will take the leadership role in this defense. Could be Sanchez, but tough for a CB to take charge from his position. Possibly Shannon or it could fall to a young safety like Parker.
That is the one aspect of the D that concerns me. In the future I think Khalil is the likely choice.

          • BleedCrimson says:

I agree, would love to hear some of the conversations during the 7 on 7’s just to get a feel for who is Alpha in each group.

          • EasTex says:

When I heard that Waco Midway shut down Highland Park’s offense in the playoffs and that Haughton was the defenses signal caller I was sold on his football smarts and leadership.

          • BleedCrimson says:

Impressive. Not sure why (other than the talk on here), but I am thinking that PJ and Haughton will see the field on a regular basis shortly into the season.

          • EasTex says:

It wouldn’t surprise me, either. The incoming talent is exciting.

          • JD says:

I hope they are eased into the game unless they are just flat out getting it and well beyond the others…seems like you always see mistakes early in the year with young dbs….get em some reps early and have them ready for later in the year when are schedule tightens up

          • JD says:

You mean Cook and to me the biggestbest change is having the two groups in the same meeting

    • blaster1371 says:

Shannon has to show he still has it. He was a good linebacker but no one will confuse him with the better ones this last decade. Jordan Evans has been progressing each season and with the added weight he may be the thumper we all have hoped for.

    • hOUligan says:

Looking forward to seeing how Riley uses Flowers and probably to a lesser extent, Joe (sp) Phlange (FB position). Also, hoping to see Brooks make a push for #3 RB.

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Rodney Anderson and Ross along with Brooks can flourish in this offense as well. I mean, we have a backfield!

        • BleedCrimson says:

Will be interesting to see how we distribute the ball to so many weapons.

          • EasTex says:

Having looked at the videos of AD, Murray, Mixon and Anderson, both high school and college the physical comparisons of AD-Mixon and Murray-Anderson leap out at me.
Hopefully the two new RBs will become great and memorable Sooners like the other two did.

        • blaster1371 says:

I Think if there are two backs in the backfield both will be RBs. I really don’t see much of a role for the FBs except in short yardage situations. I could be wrong but I don’t remember seeing a FB on the field in the ECU- Florida game.

          • BleedCrimson says:

Not trying to be like the one that must not be spoken, I believe that Bob learned a valuable lesson when we went run and shoot style offense. We had trouble getting short yardage. I think because of that we will see a bit of the FB often enough to keep defenses honest.

          • EasTex says:

Leach probably would have been gone after ’99 if he hadn’t gotten the Taco Tech job. Bob wanted a more balanced attack and Leach wanted to throw even more. I remember reading a story years ago that they had some serious disagreements on the type of offense Bob wanted.

          • BleedCrimson says:

Just as a fan, I kind of got that feeling also. In Bob’s press conferences, he was always saying that he wanted to be balanced, but during the games you didn’t get the feeling Leach wanted much of that style.

          • EasTex says:

The ’99 offense really was a “popcorn” offense.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

            Balanced and multiple…?

          • EasTex says:

What a sight it would be if the offense came out in a wishbone formation with Flowers/Perine/Mixon, then split one RB and put the other in motion, handing the ball to Flowers up the middle. It was either Littrell or Clapp that made some nice runs in the past.

          • BleedCrimson says:

I like your way of thinking

          • EasTex says:

Think of the gaps in the defense if they did that.
I also wonder if we won’t see the OL take wide splits to create gaps for the RBs and slow down the pass rush?

          • BleedCrimson says:

As long as the youngsters in the OL getting the starts can do their job with minimum assist from the backs chipping, we should be good there. I expect a bit of learning curve in the first game. But we can not afford to have breakdowns in the second. I believe Bedenegger will have them ready. Looking forward to watching the youngsters grow up.

          • EasTex says:

I have confidence that Bedenbaugh will have his guys ready.
In a few decades there will be others taking the time to celebrate and remember the great Sooners we are privileged to see now.

          • RocketCitySooner says:

Not sure who would play QB in your wishbone set? TK9 appears to be a bit fragile to take the pounding. How about you replace Mixon with Ross and let Mixon play QB?

Btw, my biggest OU football regret is that I didn’t get to see the great wishbone teams. OU went to the ‘bone the year after I graduated. In my mind, there are few things prettier than a good ‘bone QB coming down the line working the options.

          • Boom says:

TK is a bit fragile. Football is fragile. Look at all of our QB’s over the years and let me know how fragile they are compared to TK. I like all of the QB so this is not slanted towards being a TK fan. I see this comment all the time and I have to say that all our studs over the years have missed games due to injury. Would you call Bradford or White fragile? Curious.

          • Zack says:

Good point. I would like to see him have a Jason white type of finish to his career at OU.

          • Boom says:

Absolutely. Heck, AD only had one year in which he wasn’t hurt at OU. That’s what they said about him in the draft. Injuries happen.
My opinion is we have 3 good (not great) QBs. Riley’s system is built around QB that doesn’t have to be great. That said, these QBs will have a better understanding and rhythm during the game. I feel TK will have a very good year in this offense.

          • Zack says:

I want to see knight play and succeed but no matter what he does, people all over are going to be asking for mayfield. Imagine if tk somehow was putting up heisman type numbers, I’m not saying it will happen but look at Boykin, people are going to think mayfield would do even better unless they saw mayfield do worse.

          • Boom says:

            I agree

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Agree. But you have to admit three pick-sixes and 14-13 TD to INT ratio will not cut it. After 2013-2014 we are fed up. Junior year for Knight let’s go get it…but if he shows signs of 2013-14, he should be benched.

          • RocketCitySooner says:

No disrespect meant to TK9. Consider the great wishbone QB’s like Mildren, Davis, Lott, Watts, or Holieway, etc. I think you would admit that they were more robust than TK9. Guys who can play wishbone QB are a different breed than the QB’s you mentioned. Just different characteristics. Remember, a QB in the ‘bone takes a hit almost on every snap from center.

BTW, I share your assessment that TK9 is probably as robust as any of our current or recent QBs. But that doesn’t mean he would last long running the ‘bone. None of our QBs would.

          • Boom says:

Lott goes down in 1st Q again Ohio State with hamstring issues and doesn’t play again for a couple of games. Holieway blows out his knee and never was the same, Thompson took over.
When you run, you’re less likely to get hurt than when you are a sitting duck in the pocket. Different types of QBs for different offenses.

          • RocketCitySooner says:

I wasn’t saying that our wishbone quarterbacks were invulnerable, only that our current QBs are more vulnerable than the ‘bone QBs. And, I agree that a running back is less likely to take a major hit than a pocket passer. That still doesn’t address the fact that a passer may only take one or two sacks a game. Watch a reply of one of our wishbone teams. Those wishbone QB were hit on every play. It’s cumulative.

          • EasTex says:

I didn’t say run the bone, just line up in it then split one RB and send the other in motion. It would make the defense go bonkers.
As for TK being injury prone, it seemed that way his R-Fr year, but not last year. The dirty shot he took in the BU game would have injured any QB.

          • RocketCitySooner says:

I see your point about play execution versus a formation. In your scheme, TK9 would be a great choice for QB.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Yes, agree. Flowers will excel on special teams I think. A lot of single back with Mixon.

    • Zack says:

I would consider westbrook and quick to be possession type guys too gotta see if they have good hands on the field this year though. Can’t say westbrook will be great until we see it but I do feel good about him. For quick he had a ton of targets in some games but too many drops so hopefully that’s fixed this year.

      • BleedCrimson says:

Maybe they found tennis balls for the tennis ball machine. Hard to argue with results.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

At times, I anticipate seeing Mixon, Shepard, Westbrook, and Perine on the field at the same time.

      • Zack says:

I’m sure we will see that at times but for the running game to do well with that personnel, I think you would have to have flowers in there because I’m not sure how good Andrews or Meier will be at blocking.

        • D Hunter Sanchez says:

In the Air-Raid, even without a FB/HB/TE, a single back can dominate a game running the ball. Remember Quentin G? In recent years, Baylor’s back, and Taco Tech’s backs hurt us…

          • James says:

I’m with you. With 4 wideouts two things will happen, less people in the box and more DB’s in rather than LB’s…… 240lb RB vs 190lb DB….. I like that situation very much!

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

As an OU fan, I’m only asking for one Christmas present this year: Youngquist and Caleb Kelly Cali duo…IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK FOR?

    Kish for President?

  • C.A. says:

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

Does anyone know if Bryce visited any other schools in the area?

    • Zack says:

I think all I’ve heard is OU and then pac 12 schools. Would be nice to land a commitment from another LB. Especially since terry might be more of a DE prospect in a 4-3. I think we eventually will land kelly but it will literally be 2016 when that happens.

      • Lane Gilstrap says:

I just read he was visiting Wisconsin Thursday and gave a similar response with them. I’m not gonna hold my breath with this one.

    • hOUligan says:

More people die from exposure to cold than heat every year.

          • Boom says:

Due to cracking/fracturing/breaking most of my fingers, my hands don’t work in cold weather. I can go skiing and it’s great but I know I will be home in 5 days. Shorts & t shirt is my way of life.

      • hOUligan says:

Having ‘enjoyed’ both growing up in sou OK and residing in ND and MT, I’ve decided I don’t care much for either extreme but actually endure the cold and snow better. The middle path, Sensei.

        • blaster1371 says:

Talking about extremes: I was in San Diego last week for a conference and it was 72 with a light breeze; absolutley great. I got home yesterday and today I got caught up on outdoor chores and its 95 with some stout humidity (for CenCal).

        • EasTex says:

I can deal with any temp, though I prefer not wearing a lot of heavy clothes. It is the inclement weather that comes with the cold that I absolutely hate with a passion. I don’t get angry easily or often, but seeing snow and ice pegs my pi&&ed-off meter.

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Going back over the 2010 Baylor game we win 53-24, 2011 we score 40 points and lose on a last second miracle. We score 40 in 2012 and win. Then what happened? Well 1. Our D seems to have been unable to stop them since the 2011 game why? It’s not freakin recruiting. We get better players. 2012 we’re up by three scores with 11 mins left. Not a close game really. Then in 2013 and 14 we have an inconsistent passing game and again can’t stop their offense. We need LJ, Bradford type QB play…and a DC that can slow them down like in 2010 and 2012.

    • SoonerinLondon says:

QB play is the big difference in our performance. With LJ last year, we beat TCU, KSU and OSU, IMHO.

    • J J says:

Keep in mind the 2013 was actually VERY close ear halftime… Look what happened when Shepherd went down. I’ll honestly bet BUs TOP was huge in 3 rd qrtr… It wasnt Josh’s most shining play calling moment either. As bad as OUs def was in 14 In The 3rd… OUs def just wore out…they played BU pretty solid in 13 well into 3rd qrtr b4 quitting…

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

True. But we need a QB that can keep putting points up like LJ when the Defense can’t stop a team. 50-49 over WV etc…

We need to recruit kids that want to play here. Why would anyone go to Waco?

    • Zack says:

As bad as Waco is, it is only 2 hours or so from 4 great cities (so I’m told).

      • Boom says:

Baylor is in the middle of a run. It has some momentum but it won’t last forever as there are teams in other conferences that have done the same. The key is OU needs to step up and that means all positions, not just singling out the QB.

        • Zack says:

They definitely won’t keep it up. It would be nice if OU and Texas have themselves a run like they did in 2008. I don’t think Texas is close to being ready but if OU gets the right production this year then OU/Baylor will be a top 10 maybe top 5 matchup

          • Boom says:

            same page with you.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Right on. I am just sick of Baylor scoring 40+ on us. 2011, 2013, 2014. We have to pressure the QB this year, not just in the non-conference games.

Tre Jackson was my guy this year. When TFB posted his Hudl, I watched 30 seconds and knew he was the guy. I wanted to call him Boom due to his explosive abilities on the field. Hope we still have a chance.

  • trusoonerA53 says:

I can’t help but think that some of these recruit’s that visit, see the competition ahead of them and just simply choose.some other school. Especially when it comes to both.OL/DL. So I do try to keep that in mind as well. You have to bring your lunch bucket everyday at OU, there maybe some not willing to do this. Keep this in mind also. Some of these kids are gifted with no discipline, just ego

    • Boom says:

Not to argue but I would say Bama has some talent on their team and it doesn’t stop recruits from going there. Same with a lot of schools. Lot of factors but I’m excited about the end of this recruiting cycle and looking forward to 2017 with the new coaches. Hopefully they will go on a roll.

    • kokevo says:

This is a poor wore out excuse there are dozens of school that reload every single year in the same positions. With that said I think ou will land a few nice recruits but they need to close on a few of there first choices or even second choices we are down to third on a few of our positions.

  • Jeff says:

I miss the good old days when OU could lock down recruits, I see Kelly going to Michigan

    • Ed Cotter says:

His offer list is ridiculous and Harbaugh has been pulling them in left and right, so you may have called it. I hope not.

    • Zack says:

So who does OU end up landing this year?

    • j l says:

We need the season to start, badly. If we arent better than michigan this year, well then it probably wont matter who we recruit anyway.

    • JD says:

I remember having to wait until signing day or at least the AA games to land the big names

  • Ed Cotter says:

I like Bryce’s picture with the Heisman. OU should have had him take a pic with their FIVE Heismans…..and their Butkus Awards. Does Oregon have even one of those? LOL. At any rate, wish the young man nothing but the best in his college career and beyond.

  • William Ryan says:

Does Chris Baccus the neo lb have a ou offer yet?

    • Zack says:

Looks like his biggest offers so far are Nebraska and Arizona state.

    • Jordan Esco says:

      Not yet

    • JD says:

If he had a red shirt he would be more appealing…he’s 225 and needs to add weight plus both Evans and Alexander would be seniors when he got here..add Tay and Bolton coming up…would add to depth but the coaches may be wanting to try and get the guys they can have for 5 years first and also see how the young guy do this year…depending on that and the injury bug he may get a late offer but as of right now I just see him as mainly a ST contributor

      • Zack says:

        So he’s just a 2 for 2 guy?

      • William Ryan says:

Hes Oklahoma kid that looks the part and he dang sure doesn’t look like a safety couldn’t hurt to have him for depth but the kid is definitely a thumper by the way OUr lb recruitment is going it’s about time for a boom

        • JD says:

Don’t get me wrong..I like him too…just saying why he prob doesn’t have an offer (small class as well)…btw ST is special teams not safety

          • William Ryan says:

I understand the number issue and I relize its only July but I just don’t want to see us scrambling like last year to get a lb commit.

      • William Ryan says:

I knew you referring to special teams but I seen Alexander and Evans getting dragged to much after initial contact hopefully year of experience help but was not impressed with them at all last year

  • Randy says:

Brownings comments are telling.. “Baylor has a brand”..

    • ratman says:

Baylor has won 3 of 4 from the Sooners. The last 2 were blowouts.

      • Tenkillersooner says:

Sorry rat but the discussion was about brand and Baylor has how many NC?

        • boomersooner says:

Don’t mind him. He’s just a wet blanket who can’t help himself

        • kokevo says:

Recruiting now days is what have you done for me lately not so much about how many NC you have.

    • Jordan Esco says:

      Ouch

    • Zack says:

The thing is you don’t hear that much from a LB for a great offensive team. But what it tells me is that their offense allows their defense to be aggressive and I suppose that’s what is going on.

      • Randy says:

And they are winning, fun offensive and aggressive defense. Brand says identity.

      • DCinAZ says:

Just tells me Baylor’s coaches are doing a phenomenal job of selling Baylor’s program. Baylor has never won anything of note and has no “brand”.
I have no idea what our recruiting strategy is.

    • blaster1371 says:

Kinda shows how little he knows about that team beyond the last few years. I wore a Baylor tshirt to the gym a few years back (used to be my third fav big 12 team) and a few people had no idea what state the school was in.

  • Glocal Sooner says:

Not too worried about recruiting just YET. It’s still early and our offer list still has tons of guys available. I’d rather them commit late and stick than commit early then decommit. Of course it’d be great if they could commit early and stay. On paper, I really like the youth of the team. We’ll see how it plays out this season.

  • Walter Sobcek says:

“Shoulder fatigue” implies muscle exhaustion and depletion of glycogen in the cells. That takes, in most cases, about four or five days recovery. Mayfield has now missed three weeks, so clearly it’s more than “muscle fatigue.” Has to be an issue with bursitis or rotator cuff.

    • boomersooner says:

I’ve had dead arm before. Takes longer than 5 days. To me shoulder fatigue implies shoulder fatigue. But I played sports and sucked at science

Handwriting is on the way out, only years away from not using the spoken word. 🙂
