As has been discussed all week, not entirely sure what we can expect to get out of today’s scrimmage. However, at the end of the day it’s still OU Football (well, at least sort of) and that’s never a bad thing. Especially when it will be around four more months before we get any more.
If you didn’t already read it (and care to do so now), we put together some things to watch for today. But we’d love to hear from you all and what you’ll be watching, so let yourself be heard in the comments below.
Otherwise feel free to hang out and discuss the happenings once things get started around 2pm.

Seems like a lot of QBs have more problems with blitzes up the middle than from the edge. Looks like he could be good at that to me.

I can understand that no contact on QB’s. But as poorly as the D tackled in two specific games last year, they need ALL the practice they can get.

I am going say my starting 5 regardless of position plus 5 bench guys would be. Blake, Tisdale, Najera, Buddy, and Price. With Minor, Ere, Bookout, White, and Cousins as my bench. I was blessed to see most of them play!

He’s a lil before my time too, but everybody that is a lil older than me tells me that he put OU B-ball on the map. 4th overall draft pick and NBA rookie of the year. Not a lot of youtube on him, but he was a double double machine at OU. I liked the smoother shooters growing up, so David Little and Tim McCalister were my favorites

Hello from a wintery and snowy Pittsburgh (yes it sucks)! So far I am liking what I am seeing, especially from the newer guys. Overton and Anderson have been doing fantastic, and while it is just the spring game, it looks like there will have to be some rust shaken off for Week 1 at Houston. Boomer Sooner!!

You are right Ura–that’s because he has highly rated recruiting classes each and every year. OU needs to be the same. Got to be more physical on both sides of the ball and playing two hand touch will not get it done.
As the recruiting improves, let’s hope the more physical style of play, including in practices will improve as well. I firmly believe that Stoops would prefer to have that ability.
But if the physical practices happen before there is depth, a couple of injuries in practice could ruin a season. It can become a “cart before the horse” kind of situation.

It was tight coverage, but Green did have both hands on the ball. PJ then grabbed one of his arms. May have caused the drop, but it should have been caught.

Watched some of the Texass A&M spring game. Trevor Knight will have a really good shot at starting there going into camp; maybe even be the favorite.

The not tackling thing made it unwatchable. If they’re not going to tackle then they should do an open practice or something so fans can see more reps. I’m not sure how many plays were ran but if it were a practice I assume they run more plays.
Rarely is Sooner Football unwatchable. Only a few games come to my 57-year-old memory. And those few are stuffed back down and have gasoline poured on them and a match tossed on top.

Not sure what the alternative is. But they always have guys get knicked up in the spring. I get the whole no tackling to the ground but at least make the defensive guys wrap up. There were a couple times a finger touched mixon and they blew it dead. And I’m pretty sure there were only like 25 minutes of actual game time. The clock seemed to have minutes run off between plays.
I don’t think they ever turned the clock off, at least in the 4th Q. Im not a NewsOK guy (can’t really stand them). Kersey made an interesting observation. His opinion was the touch football helped Baker, because he holds the ball too long, gets sacked too often. He got sacked several times today, even a safety. His idea was practicing to touch football might help his get rid of the ball a little quicker. If Baker has a flaw IMO its he does hold too long sometimes, he sometimes makes a miraculous play when he holds too long so kinda catch 22.
It doesn’t appear that the coaches are all that interested in changing baker’s holding on to the ball. I would like to see more quick passes though.

I have the same feeling I get watching these that I do when I have to watch someone demo their software product. It’s all well and good but how well does it work in real life and not this made up case. The games is so unlike a real game that it’s hard to get any real information from it.

Deberry looked ok….he didn’t seem to be moving full speed yet. Several times, to me, he seemed to hesitate very briefly. He is amazing fast though, and McGinnis looked good too. Overall I thought the LB’s looked about the best of any of the separate groups. Obo, Bolton, Hunter and Rodriguez made lots of stop or/and were in on the stops.

DeBerry did alright, hard to get a feel for things when all you do is bump the runner. Tay ran with the 1’s and did ok. Obo filled in nicely and definitely looks more intimating off the edge.

My Thought of the spring game, (sitting on the 50 yard line):
1)Back up QB is not as big as a concern now! Austin Kendall looked really good. get the ball out quick when open, made proper reads and followed to second and third receiver in a timely manner, nice snap on the passes and accurate. had two passes dropped that definitely should have been caught, and another that the receiver had two hands on in the end zone. looked way better than an 18 y/o should
2) (I was sitting right in front of Quinn Mittermeier Dad so I paid special attention to him when he was in there) In my opinion, he did an excellent job at Right Tackle.Overall, I seen some O-line mistakes, hope they clean those up.
3) Dalton Rodriquez tore it up when he was in there. I was also impressed with Curtis Bolton.
4) Obo is the nicest guy on the team, and bigger than I expected.
5) Speaking of Big, Ashton Julius is BIG.
6) I also seen Levi Draper, and he too was bigger than expected.
7) really hard to get a read on first team offense, since they were hampered by the “touch” rule. They ruled the ball down many times, when they definitely would not been able to make a tackle.
8) the constant music over the speakers was more irritating than the touch rule.

It would have done the job, I could barely talk to my sons sitting next to me. Although I can’t imagine them using that many signals as vanilla as the play calling and game play was. but Bob is uber-sensitive to giving away any tips, so that is very possible.

If he can’t move side to side at RB, then he can’t do this at LB. Moving in all directions needs quick hips for LB. Again, if he doesn’t have this at RB, LB would be even a harder position to play. I’m a fan of Ross but like you said, way to much talent around him.
Boom, you make a good point about the lateral movement needed at the LB position. I think the coaches felt his upside was higher. Unfortunately it’s not. Plus, he doesn’t have that look in his eyes that I like to see.

Hey Bear, did you notice that extra gear Anderson had. Ross has some outstanding speed, when he has open field and the goal line in sight, but watching Anderson accelerate was impressive. He kinda reminded me of Murray when he would glide and then turn on the speed.

I don’t even know if it’s his hand, he was just recruiting with it, I think. I was suprized at the low cost of the rings. They are really quite cheap. I think they are very attractive, but inexpensive.

It’s hard to get too excited about a spring game, but there were a few things that really stood out to me:
1. The guys that were expected to play well, played well. Although, without the tackling against the starters, it’s hard to tell much. However, Mixon looked as expected and Baker looks like he could play a game tomorrow. The O-line also looked good for the most part, and it was interesting seeing Powers in at RG.
2. Speaking of the O Line, is anyone else as impressed with Alvarez at center as I am? I LOVE the way the kid plays. He plays like he’s pissed off and has something to prove. It is so hard to find that quality in an offensive lineman, but he has it! As much as I loved Ty and Gabe before him, I seriously think we have upgraded that position.
3. The single new guy that impressed me the most had to be Chance Sylvie. You could tell how much arriving early has benefited him, but I was really surprised to see how well he looked. I guess I wasn’t expecting to see that from a true freshman. That brings up a tough question; Will he get a red shirt? We’re pretty deep back there, but I honestly thought he looked as good as anyone playing in that second group.
4. Curtis Bolton (again) impressed me in the spring game. Surely he’s going to see some time on the field this year. I’ll admit that I didn’t pay a lot of attention to Tay Evans, so he may have outplayed Bolton, but I love Bolton’s size and speed.
5. I think we’re going to be just fine in the WR department. I don’t know that there’s going to be one guy outside of Andrews that will be ‘the’ guy (like Shep was), but I have to think we have a better overall unit than last year.
6. My final thought is the CB position opposite Thomas. I like Austin a lot, but it looked to me like he struggled to stay with some of our receivers. And was overly physical on more than one occasion. Meanwhile, Mbanasor looked to have gotten much more comfortable at the position. I don’t know how that will shake out, but there’s no doubt that the coaches saw the same thing we all did, and that may put Mbanasor ahead of Austin when the season starts.

Agree on all points. Evans, Bolton and Johnson all tied for most tackles (7). I liked Sylvie, Johnson, Parker and Mbanasor in the DB, but was not impressed with some of the others.
Sylvie was front-and-center during the post game talk by Stoops- born leader. Gonna be hard to keep him on the sidelines.

Bolton looks like a guy who should be on the field in passing situations. He can drop deep into coverage and I think that will catch some QBs off guard to see a linebacker drop 20+ yards with ease. Receiver will be worrisome early on IMO until some guys step up each week. You see flashes from dahu and Miller. I do think Westbrook is going to have a good year if healthy he made a great decision to stay one more year and really help his draft stock.
But again, Dahu drops a touchdown ball. This is getting to be consistent with him. Gotta be a mental thing.

Agreed. Bolton looks really good, and tailor made for some passing downs. I also agree about Dede, and I think he’s set for a big Jalen Saunders type year.

Had this been a real game, Austin would of been flagged on almost every play. He kept holding his man.
That’s what I saw too, but for whatever reason the refs didn’t make the calls. Mike Stoops still seems to think he’s the guy right now (based on some of his post game comments), but there’s a long way to go between now and Houston, so I suppose things could change one way or the other.
Maybe he was just needing some human contact. /s
We have about 5 receivers that look like anyone could carry the load. I think Coach Riley will keep platooning until those that will start begin to rise above the rest. Obviously Andrews, but Quick, Smallwood, Miller, Mead, all looked good.
Agree with Alvarez. Looks good. I think our OL is going to be markedly better next year. I’m excited about the OGs; looks like we have some to pick from that look like they could be maulers. And look to have some depth at center and guard. Not completely sure about OT yet.
I don’t see how we can not RS Sylvie. It looks like we are finally deep at safety with talent. But, having said that, I’ve seen Sylvie like guys not be redshirted before, so we’ll see.
I’m most concerned with backup QB and CB. I just don’t see how Austin can play that position. I know, he’s done it some already, but he’s so small. Surely he can’t make it an entire year as a starter at that size. Which means, it seems to me, that we have to have Mbanassor and the FR coming in step up and be great this year. It’s not unprecedented for a true FR to come in a be good.
I think we’ll be okay with who we have on campus already at the LB position, so if a true FR comes in and starts, it means he’s a real stud.
Lots of WRs. I think we have 8-10 and don’t worry about replacing any starter who their backup. Same at RB position and DL and safety. Pretty much not worried about backups stepping up and starting at any of those positions. Not feel completely that way about OL, but close to feeling that way. Don’t feel that way about CB or QB yet, although Kendall looked good at QB. Like what I’m hearing about him rarely throwing an interception. That bodes very well for his/our success as a team.

Rodriguez had some flashes at OLB. I wonder how much of that was due to the way the refs called the game though. On the other hand he probably won’t face many QBs that have better escapability than that of baker.
He did spend a lot of time in the backfield, even when he didn’t get a tackle.
yeah going against Kyler or Baker will be good for all their developments . its like chasing a chicken in the open. a chicken with dance moves.
I didn’t notice any drop off but as the aforementioned no tackle policy it was really hard to get a clear picture of how good they might be.
I always enjoy seeing the freshman, guys coming off redshirt seasons, transfers etc. Liked seeing Anderson, Murray, AD MIller, AK, Geno Lewis, DeBerry, PJ, Rodgriguez, Gallimore, and so on.
Having said that, trying to get a feel for LB play when it’s touch football is pretty much impossible.
I enjoyed being in the stadium with my 4 boys, atmosphere and seeing the team, coaches and recruits on the field. Got a great dose of Crimson and new gear for the family $$$$$$. We saw the BB team honored and several OU alums on campus. Also enjoyed the game despite the already mentioned quick whistles, no tackles, irritating music and running of the game clock. We had a great day and quality time together. The stadium is gonna be >awesome. To me, it wasn’t a waste of time or completely worthless effort. Long long time till Gameday.

I went back and watched a little more of the game and I liked Dwayne Orso at RT.
I will have to go back and watch him. I focused on Daimler and the guards. Daimler isn’t bad at run blocking and got to the next level pretty quickly. On pass plays he seemed clumsy on his feet getting caught more than once with his ankles together.

There’s nothing about this I don’t like.
You know you’re skinny when you have to jump twice to get your boobs to bounce.
There is no doubt talent on this team. Like most years when a team is full of talent it’s all going to depend on development in areas we are young and LEADERSHIP. I think it will be harder to replace Ty, Shep, Tapper, Striker and Sanchez’s leadership than it will be their talent. You have to have a core group of leaders and then all 85+ kids buying in to coaching and staying together as a team on and off the field to get back to the playoff, IMO.
I feel good with Baker, Perine and Mixon in the backfield. Despite Mixon’s early troubles off the field, you can just tell he is having fun out there and is all about team first.
Not sure who is going to be the leader on the Oline but it’s important to have a strong leader in that group and a lot of times it’s the center for obvious reasons. Anyone with Oline insight know if any of the guys have proven to taken on that roll yet this year?
Receiver position worries me a little cause I don’t feel like anyone has proven themselves enough and receivers personalities tend to be the most fickle. Westbrook could be that guy but I don’t know his personality well enough. Geno Lewis being a 5th year guy or someone who has been around a while like Smallwood could prove to be the guy but they will have to earn the others respect on Saturday’s I would think first.
Dline? Don’t know who the leader is in this group?
I’m confident about Jordan Evans, Steven Parker and JT with the LB’s and DB’s. All proven players who appear to have the personalities to lead the younger guys.
They did a great job building a family environment in the the locker room last year and you could tell all the guys genuinely liked one another and were willing to sacrifice for the sake of the team. I have a good feeling that is going to carry over in to next season but it only takes a bad loss, an injury or two, or a hand full of young guys not buying in for a team to end up in the Sun Bowl instead of the playoff. The good news is we will find out a WHOLE lot about this team game 1 on the road at Houston. BOOMER
Agree on the leadership. Have heard Bob say Orlando has taken on some of the leadership in the Oline. He’s said to be a hard worker and very intense. A bit young for the role but sets a good example. Hoping some of the ‘nasty’ rubs off on the others as well. On D would think the core SRs, Wade, Dimon, J Evans along w/ JRs Walker and Romar. Pretty solid group.
Ya a player of Orlando’s caliber (NFL talent) definitely can become that guy if he has the work ethic and the personality to hold the other guys accountable.
Agree, that those veteran Dline guys can do it by committee. I really hope Walker can become more consistent this year. I don’t know for certain but he comes across as a guy that relies a little too much on his talent. He needs to to focus this season since it’s apparent his plan is to leave early after this year.
I think Alvarez will rise to be the leader of the oline. He has played two positions on the line and is said to be smart and picks things up quickly. Brown is always a dumbass penalty away from killing a drive. Then again, I have only in-game time to evaluate and know nothing about what takes place anywhere or anytime else.
I think you may be right about Alvarez and that would be great. I had forgotten ’til I watched Stoops post scrimmage presser that Alvarez played center was recruited as center and played it in high school. Also, really glad he gained so much experience last year. I have high hopes for this line.

Good post. The keys to a great offensive year are two things, I believe: 1) Can the receivers become great route runners to be able to consistently get open and give Baker good targets,
2) Will the O line be even better than last year to give Baker more time instead of having to rely on last minute scrambles.
On Defense: we need vocal respected leaders. I think Tay Evens is going to have a huge year.
I think the WR unit will be fine. We don’t need great receivers in this system – just good, reliable ones who can also block. I believe the O line will be better, especially given how well Alvarez is already doing at center. And having Anderson healthy gaves us a three-headed monster at RB. More size and athleticism at LB will hopefully compensate for a little less experience. Secondary is set. D line will all depend on whether Walker can stay healthy. He’s a difference maker, but there are some other talented guys as well. This team will be dangerous.
I want one other playmaker on the Dline to go with Walker… I think that guy might be Q Overton this year. Ward, Dimon and Romar (hopefully Gallimore) can give us the consistency but I’m hoping for some serious disruption in the backfield like we haven’t seen in a while.
I think you are right on WR. If this Oline gels like I expect it to, two possibly three NFL RB’s to for D’s to account for, Andrews, and WRs/Baker 2nd year in LR’s system… leaves a lot to be optimistic about.
