2016 Red/White Game | What I’ll Be Watching

Image via OU Football Facebook

Among other things, OU’s annual Red/White game is the final reminder for fans that the next 4+ months are really going to suck. It’s also an opportunity afforded fans ‘jonesing’ for their one and only real glace of that year’s squad, while an OU coaching staff does everything in their power to show as little as humanly possible. In short, it’s a tradition unlike any other™.

And based on some recent interviews I heard from Bob Stoops this past week, it sounds as though things could look a little different this year. He’s indicated rather than hold guys out, the plan is — at least for the first teamers — to simply not tackle to the ground in an effort to avoid injuries. Mind you I still expect a number of guys to receive limited snaps (Baker Mayfield) or be held out altogether (Samaje Perine), but maybe not as many that would have been otherwise.

However all cynicism aside, as fans it really is our only chance to see the team before they kickoff the 2016 season against Houston in September. Therefore it’s not as if there is nothing of interest for those of us who will be watching, either from inside the still-in-process renovations of Memorial Stadium or from the comfort of our own homes.

So with that in mind, here are a few of those things I’ll have an eye on this Saturday.

* Again as vanilla as we can all but guarantee the coaches will keep things, and with as many guys as we can be sure will either see limited time or held out all together, I’m just not sure how the top story line coming into this thing is anything other than Austin Kendall.

Barring something unexpected — i.e. Cody Thomas’ return to the football team — the true freshman quarterback will almost assuredly be the primary backup to Heisman hopeful Baker Mayfield. Which is asking a lot of any true freshman QB, let alone one on a team with expectations as high as this OU team will have in 2016 looking to get back to the CFB playoff for a second consecutive season.

Now there is an argument to be made that were Mayfield to miss an extended period of time, OU would likely be screwed regardless of who was backing him up. The counter to that being with Samaje Perine and Joe Mixon in the backfield, in theory, you may not necessarily need a superstar at QB to carry the offense.

So while no matter what happens on Saturday it will still be “just a spring game,” but if Kendall comes out and looks sharp it could go a long way towards easing at least some of the perceived concerns having a true frosh as your QB2.

* I guess I’ll be the contrarian in what I have to assume will be the minority of people who “cover” OU and not creating click bait making a big deal about whatever Kyler Murray may or may not do on Saturday. I just don’t have it in me to fabricate why that will be important or something that you “need to watch,” because the fact it is it won’t be and you really don’t.

Which definitely isn’t anything against Murray, believe me I hope — just like I assume all of you — he proves to be the star so many expected him to be coming out of high school. Rather this is simply an acknowledgement of the reality that we won’t actually have a chance to know that for another 18(ish) months.

Would it be fun to see him go out there and tear it up on Saturday? Yeah, sure (although, as with any scrimmage/spring game, such a performance is then immediately met with “Oh no, the defense sucks!”). However, would that be relevant to anything with respect to the coming season? Sorry, but no.

* The WR group really only lost two guys — granted one of them was an all-timer for the program — but for whatever reason it just feels to me like there are so many more new names. I guess that’s because Sterling Shepard was such a focus for the passing game his presence just felt like the equivalent of two or three guys, who knows. Regardless he’ll be playing on Sundays soon and this offense now faces the difficult task of replacing him (and Durron Neal).

You only need a quick glace at the roster to know there are no shortage of options, but for the sake of being concise I’ll try to limit myself to three. They are; AD Miller, Dahu Green & Geno Lewis. Again there are several others, and I’d encourage you to discuss them in the comments if you disagree with my three.

However, I went with these guys because I believe OU should be pretty set with slot guys. Be it Dede Westbrook, Mark Andrews, Jarvis Baxter, Michiah Quick, or whomever, I don’t think this offense is hurting for options on the inside. On the outside, though, things are a bit more fluid as far as I can tell. And all three of the guys I mentioned should have every opportunity to establish a role for themselves in this offense.

Unlike Miller and Green, Lewis really doesn’t have a lot to prove being a fifth year guy coming over from Penn State. His inclusion here is really more about it being OU fans’ first real chance to see him in action. Meanwhile, Miller and Green are bigger guys who should be able to go up and get the ball over defenders but still need to develop consistency and a chemistry with Mayfield.

Mind you I’m not sure how much of a chance either will have at the latter on Saturday considering Mayfield isn’t expected to play a lot, but the former is certainly something both can continue working on now matter who is under center (although if the past is any indicator we probably won’t see much of that, QB actually under center, either).

* Another obvious item of interest will be the battle for that other starting CB spot opposite Jordan Thomas. It’s believed to be primarily a two-man battle right now between Dakota Austin and PJ Mbanasor, although TFB’s reports from practices have indicated redshirt freshman Antoine Stephens is also really starting to come on.

Austin’s size is what it is, but he’s still an aggressive defender who is always looking to make a play on the ball. Meanwhile, you’d certainly like to see some of the progress Mbanasor has made under Kerry Cooks & Chip Viney because his ceiling still seems so high.

I don’t really think anything will be decided on Saturday necessarily, but there is no denying it will play some type of a role. Just how much or how little of one only the coaches could truly say.

* Considering the struggles last year’s offensive line went through early in the season, I’ll be curious to see how this year’s unit looks, especially along the interior, and how well they’ve gelled thus far. I’m also really interested to see how much, if at all, they experiment with Dru Samia inside at guard and what that looks like for the line as a whole.

I have not doubt he can be very successful on the inside, but it then creates an obvious question at RT as all those we’ve heard about as possible candidates for that spot are largely unproven.

* Linebacker is another position that I’d expect would be a popular choice as something to watch, but it’s not really high on my list. For a couple reasons: (1) your top LB, Jordan Evans, won’t (I’m assuming) be out there and (2) several guys who could have a legit chance at playing time this season aren’t even on campus yet.

That said, it would certainly be encouraging to see guys like Curtis Bolton, Ricky DeBerry, and/or Arthur McGinnis flying around out there making plays.

* Had planned to spend some time on OU’s young d-line talent as well, but at this point I’m not sure how much any of them outside of Marquise Overton will probably play. We know Du’Vonta Lampkin (knee) and Charles Walker (wrist) are out after their respective surgeries.

Plus Neville Gallimore and, I believe, Gabriel Campbell have also missed at least some of spring practices dealing with their own injuries, so I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the coaches take a bit of a cautious approach with either (or both).

We’ll be there watching whatever may be……. A few years back I came to a spring game, and there was autograph session after the game, Is that still expected?

  • LandThieve3 says:

Great stuff, Jordan. I believe Mead is a better option than AD or Dahu. Mainly based on the fact he got relatively more PT last year. Would love to see him take the next step. Was disappointed to see he didn’t gain much weight when the new roster was released.

    • LandThieve3 says:

And why does Jake Trotter from ESPN keep reporting how great Geno is? In his article today, he called him a “lock” for the rotation.

Hopefully he will put on some pounds this summer, 10 would be good!

  • Will Narramore says:

On top of all the things listed above, I’ll also be interested to see Rodney Anderson and how he looks coming back from injury. He could be the next great OU runningback if Perine and Mixon both leave. Also although it will be very vanilla, still interested to see how Thibs uses his DLinemen

    Thanks Jordan! All good thoughts.

Hard to ever know how much can be gleaned from the Spring Game, and occasionally the stars that come out of it (looking at you, Trey Metoyer) don’t do much after. But it’s still a good chance to see some new people and get some new looks.

Glad to say I’ll be there Saturday to make sure OU wins!

I would think Mead would have a chance to make an impact this fall……or no???

Great read. Looking forward to the spring game recap. I’m more interested in seeing the OL gel than any other position (including WR).

  • Birddawg says:

Spring game has always been a good time to talk about “what ifs” etc
But nothing really ever comes out of this game.
No injuries and it was a good game.
I’m just ready to the crimson and cream one more time before the epic long dreadful boring four month.
I will go out on a limb and say.. Jordan Smallwood good game

  • Ryan says:

Is the game on FSSW for us DFW folk?

  • BleedCrimson says:

Thanks for taking the time and putting this great analysis together.

  • cush creekmont says:

Thanks Jordan! You are right about how little will be shown. We will just have to pan for little nuggets out of what is there. I am curious about Geno since he is a veteran college player. Anderson’s running interests me along with how the O-line gets “shifted” around.

It won’t be real football, but it will be all we have for months, so the DVR goes on.

    • Slim Sooner says:

Same here, cush. I’ll take anything football and OU and Crimson.

      • cush creekmont says:

Yes. I re-watch the OU over ND win at Leprechaun stadium when I need a “pick me up,”

        • Slim Sooner says:

Me, too. I watch the games I’ve got recorded (wins only) over and over again. Never watch a loss because they’re deleted!! Going to Norman tomorrow, but will still DVR because it’ll be a win!

          • cush creekmont says:

Sure! NEVER keep a loss. Unlike the coaches, we won’t learn anything important from one – just learn to be pissed-off.

  • Ryan says:

Forgot my login for 6 months but I’m back in here and ready to talk Sooner football with you great people lol Boomer

  • Matt says:

Jordan, I’m assuming you left Tay Evans out of the linebacker mentions purely out of oversight…no?

    • Jordan Esco says:

More so that barring a pretty major surprise, he’s virtually assured of starting opposite J. Evans. But you definitely have a point in that it will really be our first chance to see him play/practice.

  • Bob Edwards says:

So prediction time for the Spring Game. Every year we have ‘that guy.’ You know that guy who tears it up in the Spring Game and then during the season everyone is asking who was ‘that guy’ in the Spring Game.

    • cush creekmont says:

One of the back up QBs will throw a nice pass or two against the 3rd team and many will proclaim no worry with a Mayfield injury. An unknown player that has his one, shining moment in the spring game and is never heard from again – Until two weeks ago I had Dalton Wood for this position. Now, I will have to consider and get back to you Bob. 🙂

      • Bob Edwards says:

I don’t know. Dalton Wood almost get’s a special category when ‘that guy’ awards are given out.

        • cush creekmont says:

Like the truly heroic naming of the “Don Key Award,” maybe a “can’t miss, but did miss” award could be the Dalton Wood. Or maybe a “getting to school, but not ‘really’ getting to school” award. I always thought “Smoke” Patterson was more a chat-board myth than an almost-player, but Dalton Wood is working toward legendary status.

          • metzker says:

            Now that was good stuff,Cush!!!!!

          • cush creekmont says:

You know Bob and I like the sarcastic if not the ironic. 🙂

          • Bob Edwards says:

Then there was Hunter Wall. Known as Brick Wall because he was as dumb as. He started at QB, got passed by Brent Rawls (yes that Brent Rawls) and, at one point, Stoops said he was our “fifth string tight end.” He finally left school after being arrested in a burglary where he and a couple of others were reported trying to steal some marijuana from a friends house. Sometimes fact is stupider than fiction.

  • RocketCitySooner says:

Yes, it’s four more months until the season starts. Yes, the spring game will probably be very vanilla. Still you guys need to remember how lucky you are to be able to watch this game. Just remember there are people like myself who are stuck behind enemy lines and won’t be able to do that.

Please, Jordan. Remember those of us who are exiled to other parts of the country and give us a good run down after the game. Thank you in advance.

    • Super Keith says:

I’m in Colorado, and the game is going to be shown on Fox Sports Central here. So, if you have the Fox Sports package, you should be able to check it out. Although, I agree with your statement otherwise.

RCS—couldn’t agree more about the Spring game being ‘vanilla’…the staff won’t show much of anything and OU fans are likely to see a lot from guys who won’t make the 2 deep this fall…that’s okay since nobody wants any key Sooners injured….what all of us can do is cheer the OU spring sports teams and reflect on the UConn ladies WBB champions and how nice it would be to watch the OU women win a title ( might as well dream ) and have a coach who has the impact to recruit nationally sought after talent…maybe Patti gasso can build the softball team into a contender this spring…

Thank’s Jordan good read. Four months to go.

  • Collin says:

I’m excited to see who is going to be the Samaje Perine or Jordan Thomas of this year. This is in no way saying that anyone will be at the level of impact of either player. I just mean there is always one or two players who put in work in the off-season and go from just a number on the team to a household name. Anyone have any thoughts as to who this might be this year?

    • Matt says:

I’m hoping that person is Tay Evans…linebacker needs it big time

      • ⚡️Electric Sooner⚡️ says:

Caleb Kelly being as good as advertised would help!

      • Collin says:

Now that you mention it I would have to agree. We are in desperate need of some depth at middle linebacker.

        • Matt says:

If he can really own ILB so Kapri Doucet could stick at OLB.. I think that would be best….

  • ouwooferman says:

Thanks Jordan for all you do for us. (and to those that deserve the MOD wrath of Kahn)

      • hOUligan says:

And thanks for finally lowering the ban-hammer on that idiot who makes Stephen Dale a joy to be around. Am sure the click count goes way down w/ fools like that posting trash and calling out the regulars.

  • Defend Colfax says:

Everything I’ve heard on McGinnis is that he is a ways out. Have you heard differently @jordanesco:disqus or is he just a personal favorite of yours? I would love to hear we are moving him to DE and going to a 4 front, but..

    • Jordan Esco says:

Definitely still has some work to do based on what I/we have heard. The tools are all there, but he got a little too heavy last year and I think that affected him some.

  • Defend Colfax says:

Any guesses on the walkon everyone will be Googling?

    • cush creekmont says:

One of the QB’s is my guess. A few completions against the walkon DBs and he’ll by proclaimed “better than Mayfield.”

  • metzker says:

Nice end to the day Jordan, thanks metz out——-

    • cush creekmont says:

Enjoy the evening – hit the TFB hard for the “Friday before the Spring Game” conversations.

  • Super Keith says:

Agree with everything you mentioned Jordan. The only thing I would add is that I think Jeffery Mead will play a pivotal role on the outside, so it’ll be interesting to see what kind of reps he (and the other outside guys) see Saturday.

  • hOUligan says:

Looking to get a glimpse of the walk-on QBs who will be #2 in line if the worst were to happen w/ Bake and Cody is a no show in August. And which of the WRs can show some consistency catching the ball. Just want to see how the DL guys like Q and Gallimore are progressing. And finally get a look at DeBerry and McGinnis along w/ Bolton. Yeah, it’s a scrimmage but we can finally see these guys instead of just reading about them.

    • cush creekmont says:

Good point about the two LBs – so much recruiting hype on them and a whole year of redshirt obscurity. Geeking over the spring game and re-watching individual plays seem like such a time waster, but that is ALL we have before August’s “double-secret, practice-spy reports.”

      • hOUligan says:

Yea. About to enter the ‘nucular winter’ of football. Gotta be a camel and store up ’cause there are only DVR moments between here and the ‘almost football’ mirages of the nfl pre-season.

  • SamSooner says:

Great information, Jordan. Really good stuff. I have the suspicion we will all be surprised.

  • Sooner Ray says:

It’s always been hard for me to learn anything from a spring game, more entertainment than anything else. The one thing I watch for is the accuracy of throws and do any receivers drop balls that should be caught. Always hoping for an injury free day.

  • Doobie74OU says:

Going into this season it seems eerily similar to going into 2009. Bradford was coming off a record setting amazing season in 08′ Mayfield playing lights out last year in 2015. Both QBs began the year as Heisman Hopefuls! Both teams come into the year with high expectations. Both come into the season ranked in the Top 5 and playing their first games in Texas! Playing a smaller school with potential to step up and bite you in the a$$ (2009 #20 BYU & 2016 @#12 Houston). Back up QBs are Freshman! Hope this next year turns out way better for the good guys!

  • Zack says:

The spring game is a huge waste. Hopefully Bob has a new energy one of these days in regards to the spring game. This year we could land a few recruits as long as they make it an event rather than a chore like normally do. Bob treats the spring game like a 10 year old treats cleaning his room. Just get everything out of sight as soon as possible and get back to doing what you really want to do.

I do however want to see a couple receivers explode on the scene (not Westbrook or Andrews, and frankly I would sit those 2)

    • JJSoona says:

Hey there Zack. Question for you……….why would you sit Andrews? He made some great plays last year but had some huge drops. I’m not sure about his route running but for me, consistency is vital. Thoughts?

      • Zack says:

I just figure he and Westbrook are locks to play next year. I would like to see the other receivers show us fans something. Also if Andrews isn’t injured and doesn’t have significantly more plays next season, then there’s no doubt his diabetes limits his ability to play. This past year they said they didn’t play him as much because he and shep play the same position, I personally feel like that is total BS. One is 5’10 (can do everything) and the other is basically a 6’6 240 lb TE.

  • DR LEO MARVIN says:

Good read thanks Jordan I’m out.

  • soonersd says:

For me personally, I will be watching the early enrollee freshman and redshirt freshman. Also, I will be keeping a close eye on the receivers, as well as, QB accuracy (whomever is in there). Growth of PJ at CB and the LB’s is what I will be most interested in on the defensive side of the ball.

  • JJSoona says:

Defensive reactions and offensive line is what I’ll be focused on.
