LINEBACKER
While I understand what qualifies as the ‘biggest question mark’ is largely a matter of opinion, for my money linebacker is right at the top of the list. Not only because OU lost three of their four starters, but also because they seem, if I may be so bold, almost ill-prepared as to how they replace said starters. Both from a depth (looking at the current roster, while yet to be updated, and I see all of six scholarship linebackers listed. And one of those six, Jordan Evans, is expected to miss most of spring ball. Even if you include walk-ons, I still have no clue where Bob Stoops is coming up with the 13 he referenced in his presser on Thursday) and experience (I’d challenge you to recall the last time you can remember any current OU linebacker not named Jordan Evans on the field in a non-blowout situation) standpoint.
Now I’ll grant you that whether it was under Brent Venables, Tim Kish, or Mike Stoops, OU has really never been one to rotate a ton of guys in at linebacker. They pretty much play their starters the entirety of every game. And if we’re taking Stoops’ comments at face value, the early departure of Dom Alexander to the NFL Draft came as a bit of a surprise to the coaches. However even with all of that said, one still has to ask why they’re in the position they currently find themselves in having to replace three starters with guys who, for all intents and purposes, haven’t really ever seen the field.
The depth, or lack there of, though is really the biggest issue in my opinion. Again, outside of walk-ons, you’re looking at a current roster with two(!!!) outside linebackers: Ogbonnia Okoronkwo & Ricky DeBerry. That’s it.
And yes they’re bringing in a bunch of guys at linebacker later this summer, but it’s not often realistic for guys who show up that late to come in and make an immediate impact. But they will be asked to because given the current situation, OU won’t have much else of a choice.
WIDE RECEIVER
Not sure why my man Super K’s wide receiver preview only had like 30 or so comments, as I found it to be a quality read that touched on a number of the guys OU will be looking to in 2016. And while I may not entirely share his optimism (SHOCKER for me, I know), I’m also not nearly as down on that group as some might assume.
It’s not a matter of lacking talent rather, much like at linebacker, a matter of inexperience. I firmly believe OU has a number of talented options with which to turn to, but until we see one (or more) of those guys actually step up I think it’s only fair to be at least a little bit skeptical.
I mentioned it on Twitter yesterday after K’s post went up, but I’ll repeat it here again for anyone who might of missed it. If you asked me to bet on one guy “making the leap” in 2016, for me that guy would be AD Miller. Now I’ll grant you at this point that’s mostly a gut feeling type of prediction, although we continue to hear positive things about the work he’s been putting in this offseason. I just kind of feel like of all the guys at WR, Miller has the best combination of size and speed to be that threat on the outside.
After redshirting in 2015, the speed of John Humphrey out of the slot also intrigues me as well. But like K said in his preview, and I very much agree with, in this Lincoln Riley there will be no shortage of either (1) options or (2) opportunity. It’s simply a matter of who, and hopefully how many, prove capable of stepping up and seizing what’s in front of them.
INTERIOR OFFENSIVE LINE
Oklahoma will have two brand new starting offensive guards in 2016 and a center who is shifting over from one of those guard spots after some might say had their own share of struggles at times last season. So yeah, this position group was bound to make the list.
The Sooners are looking to a trio of JUCO guys, two recent arrivals (Ashton Julious & Ben Powers) and one from last year’s squad (Jamal Danley), as well as a redshirt freshman (Cody Ford). Meanwhile, Alex Dalton is another guy who will likely be in the mix at some point as he continues to work his way back from a torn ACL suffered last year during the team’s bowl prep.
However there remains a theory among OU fans that the possibility exists Bill Bedenbaugh could move Dru Samia inside from right tackle. Now that’s 100% speculation at this point, but should someone like Bobby Evans or Quinn Mittermeier prove capable at tackle — be it right or left, then flipping Orlando Brown over to the right, where some believe is his more natural fit — then it could simply be a matter of moving Samia inside in an effort to get your best five on the field. Only time will tell, however, whether this ever materializes into anything more than a theory.
BACKUP QUARTERBACK
While I suspect some might argue this should be higher on the list, I have it beneath the other three above for one simple reason. Those are about starters, this is about a backup. Granted, with Baker Mayfield’s injury history it’s a VERY important position. But it’s still a backup.
Also between the QB preview we ran earlier in the week and everything else I suspect you’ve already read addressing the situation, I’m not entirely sure what else really needs to be said. You all know the situation and it’s less than ideal. You hope it’s not something they have to deal with, but in the event it does OU has done everything they can to prepare Austin Kendall and that he rises to the occasion. #analysis
PUNT RETURNER
Now if the plan is to simply have another designated fair catch guy as opposed to an actual punt return threat, then we can quickly eliminate this one from the list. However, I’m cautiously optimistic that won’t be the case again in 2016. I’d like to believe that’s not just wishful thinking on my part and common sense would dictate you don’t voluntarily concede one phase of the game that could easily swing momentum in your favor, but we have really the last two years as evidence to suggest otherwise.
As to the possible candidates, I suppose your guess is as good as mine. In other circumstances I probably wouldn’t be in favor of a guy like Joe Mixon being back there, but given the depth OU has at running back that may be a risk you feel comfortable taking. Along that same line of thinking, personally I’d prefer to not see someone like Dede Westbrook on punt return. Just seems like it would be a Sterling Shepard type of situation all over again.
Quick and Humphrey, I’d suspect, are a couple of other names who could likely be under consideration as well.

Congrats first Boom.

Wearing orange and black lol.

You can return punts? Strange…
I even heard some mumblings last year that you can even have guys BLOCK for the guy who returns the punt. Crazy talk, but still, interesting
Balogne! Blocking on punt team? Preposterous!
Our punt return philosophy was nuttier than squirrel poop. It also changed the game that could have gotten us to the big dance.
the question in my mind about Samia is…Would he be a good guard? He has a chance to be a pretty solid tackle so do people think he could be a better guard? I’m not really seeing him as a OG.
I see Samia as a G due to Bobby Evans talent. I feel Evans would’ve played last year if he wasn’t coming off an injury. Again, my opinion. Also, Samia would be very good guard and prolly one of Bedanboom’s favorite linemen due to the amount of positions he could play.
I’m not an expert analyst by any means and will never try to convince anyone I am so don’t take this the wrong way..What about Samia makes him look like a good guard prospect?
One, he is very good at pulling and going to the second level. Probably our best at pulling. Two, plays with very good leverage and has a good punch. Three, his weakness was handling speed rushers. Wont have to worry about that at G
Power leverage and quickness is needed at G. His quickness is good. Strength has he naturally develops.
Samia can add weight to his frame. Easily 20lbs. ( 6’4 305-315 is perfect)
Wheres JY? He would have some great insight.
I think he can be like Zach Martin of the Cowboys. Same build
Kid played really well at OLine for a true freshman that only had a couple months in the system. Next year he will have had Coach Tiff feeding him up and Coach Smitty bulking him up for an entire year. Can’t wait to see how much he improves.
ah ok that makes sense, IMO the pulling by next years line has to improve big time. Too many times last year, Perine or Mixon were just running right by their blockers because they weren’t able to get to the second level fast enough. But maybe that’s just the Adrian Peterson problem of running past their blockers
I love Darlington but he was more of a finesse blocker( angles was the key for him). I was never a big Nila believer on the field. Off the field outstanding guy. We lost two outstanding leaders on the team in terms of getting on guys when they were slacking or putting in the work. I’m curious who is the leader of the oline now. Brown or Samia. To me that’s the key to the oline this year.
I think part of his problem with speed rushers is he is at the short end for an elite tackle. That extra few inches of reach can make a difference when it comes to a guy trying to get around you on the outside.
that and his back slide needed to be better. Too many times he was reaching for the block
Waiting to see if this ‘theory’ plays out. Always under the impression OU recruited Bobby Evans as a long term answer to left tackle. Athleticism galore just needed to gain strength and mass. Quite the luxury if Brown can slide to RT and Samia inside. And that scenario gets Bedenbooms best 5 on the field IF Evans develops as predicted.
Samia is a good player period. Tackle is a more difficult position to play and he did this well as a freshman no less. Using those abilities, I would only think he would make a great guard. I’m not an OL expert so I’m not going to pretend. However, having more athletic players on the OL will only make them better and put the best 5 on the field.
His highest ceiling is at G. Hes very fluid in his pulls and he has good vision into the 2nd level. Develop his combo power. 4 year starter at OU. Got yourself a drafted G
While I agree with all the areas of concern, I may not agree with the ranking order. But to each his own and I don’t want to squabble about it. I do have great concerns about LB’s, but those new guys have power, size and speed so they will come along just fine. However, we don’t have that luxury with QB’s and that is what scares me the most. Having Baker go down could be the biggest disaster of the season. I hope and pray that Austin Kendall can exceed all expectations and be the quality backup as well as a true freshman can be. I hope he is all that and a bag of chips. However, if there is an agreement on order of concerns, punt returns is definitely at bottom of list! 🙂
Couldn’t agree more with your comment.
I like the returning group of WRs actually. You don’t need to have one guy be a superstar, rather several guys who can get open and catch the ball. Look at the 2008 team… there weren’t any All American type guys out there, but there were a few guys who could run and catch and it was more than enough to be a successful offense.
jermaine gresham,Malcohm Kelly and a guy named Demarco murray.I think Andrews can fill the “TE/WR” role gresham excelled at and Mixon does what Murray did. Those two guys in my opinion were Bradfords security blankets and made him great. With that being said I feel great about the offensive skill guys. I am a little worried about the OL.
and linebacker is definitely my biggest concern too Jordan especially with the spread teams we have coming up in the first three games that really put stress on the linebackers…oy vey
The WR write up was a really good read. Particularly liked his thoughts on Dahu and Quick. I really hope Quick makes that jump Super K said he’s expecting.
I just don’t see Quick making the jump. I’m one of those who believe if a dog will bite, he will bite as a pup, and he hasn’t. Don’t sleep on Andrews being a very huge part and maybe Humphries. Miller also. We need to find one that doesn’t drop the ball when he has a reasonable chance to catch it.
Definitely not sleeping on Andrews; I think Bob even alluded in his press conference to him being used more. I understand your stance on Quick but if Durron Neal can make the progression he made for his Sr year, then Quick has a chance to as well.
Unless Humphries has corrected his drop problems, I don’t think he will see the field. We really need his speed, but we all know how Bob is about holding on to the football.
I agree with the areas of concern. I would put OL as the main concern on the offensive side though. With a solid OLine and the running backs we have, the WR’s don’t have to be that great. However, with a weak OLine,Baker has to scramble more to complete passes, which means the WR will need to be better and he will be more likely to get hurt. Thus exacerbating the other two concerns on offense.
I second your OL comments.
Letting Baker be comfortable and being “spectacular when necessary” will be huge in our run for a championship this year. That is exhausting to spend an entire season having to play superman every single game.
I may be in the minority but the O line is one of my smallest concerns. I am thrilled with the talent we have, to me it’s just a matter of figuring out the best order.
I agree. But, having the OL shored up will do wonders for the offense/rhythm.
I agree. I actually think it will be better than last year. Especially if Dru can slide to guard. I believe Alvarez is an upgrade at C and Ford is an upgrade at G.
The biggest concern with our OLine is not the individual talent or the quality of coaching. It’s the fact that OLine, more than any other unit, requires the members to function as a cohesive unit. That’s hard to do without time spent together on the field. With two of our first three games at Houston and against tOSU, the concern is they gel fast enough to win those games.
I think the offense will be the reason we win those games (if we win), I don’t see the linebackers being ready for those challenges that early in the season so I’m betting that if OU wants to win, they’re going to have to just outscore them
I was thinking the front 7 in general is number 1 for me.. WR is 2…
“When in doubt, slot Mixon out.”
Wasn’t that the motto last year after Shep and Westbrook? Ha
I was leaning toward OL and LB as the areas I am concerned about. Although I am concerned about the QB backup, I think with our run game we can be alright, just depends on how long.
Besides the elite running back duo, no one excites me more and just has 1st or 2nd round NFL pick all over him than Mark Andrews. He’s a flat out stud who i don’t think opposing defenses or coaches have an answer for. And I agree that linebacker is a concern, but after last season, I want to see both lines become more physical and nasty, an OL that can block and get a push and a DL that can actually get into the backfield. A powerful DL would help out the linebackers a lot
1. OLB-very thin and unproven
2. QB-if baker goes down, we have to rely on a true freshman
3. Punt returner- since we don’t return one why worry
In our modern game (2005-2015), game experience is OVER F’ing RATED. OU fans should know this. Players like Dalvin Cook, the three QB’s at Ohio St and Perine prove that if you can play you’ll come in and do a championship level job.
Caleb Kelly is next.
Position of need.
Best LB in HS comes in… get him on the field.
Damn right. Best man up.
Quarterback at Ohio State is a unique scenario. The other two players you listed are runningbacks. Experience definitely makes huge differences at every other position. That’s why the award winners are rarely freshmen.
That’s a bias against youth…Who was better than AD as a freshman?
Of course I agree that AD was the best in the country but again, thats runningback, I’m saying every other position, experience makes a huge difference.
I agree.
Humbly disagree about game experience. There will always be the odd exception that “proves the rule.” The exceptionally talented running back, usually. But in the case of quarterbacks, it’s usually a combination of great coaching in a particular situation, and a superior level of talent and play every where around them, that allows a not so refined guy to do well until he gains the required experience. I would argue that even a guy as talented as Perine is hugely improved with experience. And for positions like defensive back or O-line where communication and reading are paramount, experience is critical.
So all a QB needs is great coaching and a superior level of talent and play around him to succeed? I wonder if Stoops is aware of this.
No that’s not all he needs, although Stoops has often referenced that the quality of the quarterback’s play is always heavily dependent upon those around him, and often criticisms of what the qb did are misplaced due to errors by others. But the situation at Ohio State was clearly a special case that involved particularly adept coaching along with the rest of the team completely dominating the opponent, it wasn’t just a case of a young guy being so great that he could do it all.

Still Angry! BS unsportsmans call on Jordan clapping as OU had a 1st at Clemson 28 going in. It was going to be 14-3 after 6 minutes. FIND MOTIVATION.
Why you have to bring that up. Still makes me bad. Refs have to call it both ways. Damn you Sanchez hahahahahaha
In Japan freezing my ass off. It pisses me off as well. The defense let us down. MS better devise a plan to limit Greg Ward Jr or Red-heads will roll…Give our Offense a chance.
Uh, the offense didn’t score in the second half. But the clapping penalty still pisses me off too; thanks for reminding me.
Games can be won in the second half you know! OU scored MS D gives up 3. OU is driving and a bs call leads to a punt. MS d gives up a 96 YARD DRIVE. OU lead at half. Clemson moves the ball at will…taking away possessions for the O…
I remember, believe me, I remember.
I do what I can. Let’s kick some big 12 ass again this year!
Losing Walker really hurt us bc Dimon had to play a lot. Ward had to play out of position. Well it’s going to be in the lower 70’s here in Oklahoma. Nice shorts weather just beautiful weather.
Bastard. You can’t bar-b-Q either. There’s a KFC but it has Soy Sauce on the Bird!
Soy Sauce on the Bird, WTH. Well I guess I can’t say anything bc I put hot sauce on everything.
Tabasco is great. I love Japanese food, my wife is a Jap, Oops. Love the Mrs…but missing some bonafide USA grease.
Cholula is my favorite. I even put on peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Every meal was rice and bean and hot sauce when I was going up.
The Belizians stew their chicken (or other meats) in hot sauce and then serve hot sauce with it. Makes the beer chaser taste extra good. Their sauces are all habanero based.
can’t go wrong with too much hot sauce
I was not aware there was such a thing as too much hot sauce.
Hmm… (refresh for image):
That ain’t right.
Bama gave up 40 to Clemmy with all of their starters. OU was down 2 starters including their best D-lineman. Then Shannon gets hurt as soon as he gets in and has to play the whole game hurt. Dimon was sick over break so was playing way underweight too. Mike did a heck of a job last year, I don’t think its reasonable to put that game’s outcome on him.
Okay. Sick or no sick, starting Dimon at 270 lbs is not what I would do.
Win or lose that was a great season. I now hate Clemson and they wear Orange much like the short horns.
True. I don’t think I’m celebrating Halloween this year (WHorehorns, Clemson, Pukes).
I celebrate halloween for one reason hot moms in slutty outfits.

Jordan, you need to amend “Punt Returner” to “Punt Catcher.”
I heard this guy is going to be the one:
http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/graphics/product_images/pDSP1-12448805v750.jpg
Now thats dam funny!
I was at the ou kid’s camp last summer. That guy still had a lot of drops, when Cody Thomas threw it his direction.
LB, especially in the middle, is one of the most difficult positions to learn. Especially given the requirements of our defensive schemes. So I would agree LB is 1. I agree with rainydaze below, in that we don’t really need one guy to step up to Shepard’s class at WR if three or four step up to make a few catches each. OL, we have a little bit of experience going in, so I’m not as concerned there. QB, I hope Kendall is taking snaps as we speak.
I think the talent’s there. Biggest concern will they be ready for game 1?
Houston is no joke. They better be ready.
Greater chance we lose to Houston on road early than home early tOSU.
Both games will be very tough, but with the talent that Meyer gets every year, and his coaching resume’ I believe tOSU will be the tougher game. Hope OU handles both of those teams.
Both are monster games. Both will be close. I think it will be just early enough in the season to get the win against tOSU that only returns 6 starters. I’m super stoked for that tOSU game..
Oklahoma is no joke!
It’s a make or break game 1…ESPN will be all over Houston and putting us on upset alert. Game is no UTEP.
Oh god, I remember that game. We came out so flat.
We do that with Houston that’s a L
We need more of this. Fake to the RB and pass to the TE Mark Andrews

We smacked those candy-asses in the mouth and had 1st and 10 at the 28…
Gotta…
1) not get the pass tipped at the LOS on the first play of the second drive…TD to Shep…14-0.
2) not give up the fake punt…OU’s ball, up 14-0.
3) not get a personal foul on Flowers for “clapping” when we are driving, with the ball inside the candy-ass 30…21-0?
4) sigh…not hang on, like I am…I need to let go.
There there….
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N7Fpp2VT5lk
1) yeah, I think I know which pass you are talking about. It was a TD down the seam if not slightly tipped. Announcers didn’t even seem to acknowledge it.
That worked too easy. Hopefully the 2016 offense will look drastically different (in terms of stability/protection issues) from last year.
2015 Oklahoma Offense (Baker Mayfield typical pass situation):
1) Break 15 tackles
2) 8 Side steps
3) 3-4 reverse spins
4) Launch the ball while simultaneously being sacked (for a touchdown)
Remedy: dump it in the flat for Mixon ala Jones to Murray damn it!
Wouldn’t hurt my feelings!
We hated that too though.

wow! I missed that play of the game, THAT is good play-calling!
That’s a nice use of Mark, Samaje’s running threat, and Baker’s tendencies to run. Apparently, the Clemson players were told to stop Samaje and Baker running, for any number of yards.
Exactly. The threat of Perine and BM running makes that play open ALL DAY.

Ryan Broyles! Man oh man.
Amazing they fit his 15 years at OU in 4 minutes.
I’m going with Dahu as my break out receiver this season. With the obvious guys like Andrews and Westbrook. I just keep seeing a fade to Dahu (he dropped it) but up until it hit him in the hands everything was great. Separating, timing, and high pointing the ball.
I’d like to see Brooks get a chance to return.
Ok, back to lurking I go. Off season sucks…
Boomer !
Lol, “back to lurking”. Good to hear from ya, man!
Brooks seems to be a logical chouce for PR, but there may be an issue with his hands. His quickness and lateral moves should make him very effective.
I remember that play. Left front corner of the end zone. One of the offensive coaches was giving him the business pretty good afterwards lol.
The OL was the weak link vs Clemson on offense.
As for D, a school with the Sooners history at LB being so shorthanded is baffling.
One can only hope that OU decides PR is a part of the game and that they intend to win that aspect weekly
I’m still not a totally comfortable with Thomas on the back end, I would like to see one of the youngsters beat him out.
maybe Haughton or Sunderland would be an upgrade there
me too but unfortanetly. Stoops values experience. Its like gold to him
Every team we play will know that they have a good chance to beat us if they take out Baker.
QB and its not even close.
Backup QB is my biggest Q too
How many losses did Baylor, TCU, and OSU have with their backups?
We also will have a chance to win every game if we take their starter out!
Linebacker and backup QB are crucial. In a way, for these two positions (if backup is a position), OU coaches don’t have a choice but to use who they have regardless of their quality. Could get pretty sticky.
Nice job J,Thanks!
Maybe we’ll have another season where Stoops, other coaches, other teams, and the national media will consider OU’s linebackers to be an exceptionally strong unit, and certain members of the local fan base will argue that they are weak and, more importantly, if anyone is having a good year, Kish wasn’t involved in recruiting him, and probably isn’t coaching him either. 🙂
OK, fire Kish!
attaboy! 🙂
I enjoyed the post, thanks. I have to be honest; I’m concerned about coaching as much as anything. We have real talent waiting; look at the quality players we redshirted last year. I know there are practice limits, but I think Gallimore, Deberry and Bobby Evans will be studs if they learn the system.
I also enjoyed K’s preview of the wide receivers yesterday Jordan. I read the posts here and have since the beginning but don’t comment often so hopefully you aren’t taking the minimum comments as people aren’t enjoying the posts. It’s a great site that gives quality information
Yeah what he said. My breakout receiver is Jordan Smallwood
Think we’ve been waiting for Smallwood for a while now. Coaches like him. Just needs to stay healthy.
No worries. Just keep reading and we’ll be cool 😉
I confess to a bit of apprehension about the new DLine coach, if only because I was so sold on the improvement in the nuts and bolts aspect of the coaching by the departed one.

You tell me.
On second thought, never mind.
lMAO Sam.
What’s going on, Metzker?
Just work Sam and you?
Yeah. My wife is in Florida for the weekend.
I’m heading out for Portland, Maine, Monday-Thursday.
Wow yall are world travelers.
I try to get my traveling done before summer time. I don’t like to do it when the kids are out of school.
Good on you sir!
When I get back, I’ll have a week of normalcy. We will be in Virginia for Easter, visiting a best friend. Hopefully, it will be warm by then.
Hope so pretty country up there.
Hey Sam. How are things in the great north?
Winter wonderland today, hOUligan. Nothing to bad, just a couple inches of snow.
How about you?
Tied my snow shovel to the front of my truck and drove until someone asked me ‘what’s that thing’. Have not missed that or the snow thrower.
Too funny. Where are you from originally?
Born in OK, after grad from OU did what most kids end up doing…no, not build a still…oil field. Moved all around, ended up in NoDakota and MT until this past winter. Enough cold and snow for this lifetime. Didn’t you say you were from ‘down south’? and ended up in Ohio?
“…not build a still.” I’m LMAO.
Yes, I’m from Georgia where rattlesnakes can get to be up to over six feet long. I did a lot of farm work: tobacco, peanuts, corn, you name it. If it grows, I’ve worked in it. From, textile: yuck.
Nothing against it but it wasn’t for me.
Always felt right at home in Georgia. Nice folks and that red clay. Very familiar.
Friendly folks. Always waving at strangers as one car passes another.
Sam! What’s up?!?!
It’s all good. Y
Wishing I could be like you because you da man, Jake. If I had your hands I’d throw mine away.
What’s been going on with you?
Fox is a Fox tough to compete with that.
Great as the loss of SS is, I’m not worried about receivers. Without his safety blanket, BM will learn to spread the ball around more, and OU has plenty of capable of receivers for him to go to. (Would love to see Andrews get more hauls, but with his medical issue he’ll need to be closely monitored.) We have one of the best OL coaches in the business, and BB will have that unit ready to go, and they will be bigger, and perhaps even better. LB is a concern. I think there is an upgrade in speed, size and talent with the underclassmen, but inexperience at that position is a concern with such a tough early OOC schedule. Could be the Achille’s heel. As for protecting BM, Flowers will need to continue to improve his blocking, and Mayfield MUST start throwing to his backs in the flats. Can’t take the number of hits and the punishment he got this year.
Sounds about right, Walter.
So, does anyone have a guess as to what the plan might be if both quarterbacks go down? Mixon?
I have a hunch (and only a hunch) that Cody Thomas will rejoin the team this summer for just such an emergency.
I hope you are right. It makes me a little nervous having only two quarterbacks.
Absolutely. I think Cody is loyal to the team, and will be there if needed. I guess he would have to weigh the risks of a football injury threatening his pro baseball prospects.
With the plethora of defensive linemen available and the lack of LBs in # and experience, makes a pretty good argument for going more 4-3/4-2-5. And we know Mike likes D backs on the field. Interested in seeing how McGinnis is used along w/ Rodriguez. Let the games begin!!
Just not the 3-1-7.
Tried that. Morning’ Metzker!!
True and afternoon hOU.
Dang left coast time. I’m always running behind. LoL
I forgot you were left coast.
It is freakin’ awesomely beautiful but got to put up w/ a lot of left coastedness.
Nice left coastedness good one.
Never.
Now come on Walter we all recall that WV game, worked like a champ/

Tavon still runs wild through any dream I’m having.
Who is this tavon you speak of LOL!
I need to have a “Tavon memory removal” procedure done so I can sleep in peace again.
Ok i understand, just do like a total recall thing.
There’s always Dumbledore’s pensieve.
I had to look that up. Might work, with a fifth of vodka added to the mix.
Hell, the fifth of vodka might work. LOL!
I think Mcginnis needs to find another position. He’d be more effective as a lead back.
He has almost lifted and eaten his way to DE at just south of 260# listed. Right there w/ Ward. Had heard he struggles in coverage/space. You hearing that?
Looks pretty stiff, IMO.
Yes. Heard it pretty much from the beginning of fall camp. But I personally dont like to be too negative on kids. The kid is tough agressive and physical. But is not very instinctive and his tech is not good. He plays out of place way too much. And to quote someone last year “that kid wont play LB here”. I know that sounds harsh but it was pretty evident from last years camp. Now granted thats a pretty big statement especially since it was his first year. But were recruiting some pretty solid true LBs so I feel he’s going be buried in the depth chart unless he makes a switch and dedicates himself.
I was thinking DE but not long enough. He isn’t very fluid going side to side or back. Might as well try to be a FB.
As long as it’s D backs and not D Bags, I’m cool with it.
Been saying the same for some time now.
Knew I’d read that somewhere! LoL Just makes sense from so many angles…so they probably won’t.
Agree on Humphrey at WR being one to watch for- would also like to see Baxter given a shot at PR.
Those RBear-y good points.
RBear, what’s up?
Hey Sam
Zack Sanchez on the Sports Animal just minutes ago:
“Primary reason for wanting to come out early for the draft was because of future injury concerns”. Believed that he was positioned to be a 1st round pick following his senior season with continued success & added weight.
However, a couple of different feet/ankle injuries sustained this past season made him worry about another setback during his senior campaign (i.e., ACL tear).
I get that.
Doubt Zack would be considered a 1st rounder unless he really started to wrap people up better. I’m a bit skeptical as to whether or not he actually sticks in the NFL.
I hear ya. His play-making is really attractive to scouts though (from a coverage standpoint).
They tell 200+ guys they grade as a 1st round pick.
Sup, Jake?
Doing well. Unfortunately I’ve gotta take my son to a doctor’s appointment later this afternoon (fever/congestion).
Other than that, getting ready for baby #3 to be here within the next 3 weeks.
Yourself?
Sick kids is a tough thing. You wish it was on you, not them.
I’m traveling. Other than that, all is good.
That’s the truth! Sounds like what I told my wife. He’s 2 and full of energy/great personality. To see him dragging, low energy and his mouth open (lack of breathing)- sad stuff.
Get him in to see the doctor. Get him started on whatever treatment prescribed. The one good thing is it’s a perfect reason to snuggle up and watch a movie.
Good luck to you and your wife on your newborn to be.
Thanks, brother. We can’t wait for him to be here.
Name?
Royce. Either Royce Jacob or Jacob Royce. My 1st son has one of my names already and so Royce gets the honor of receiving the other ?
Nice. Sorry I dropped off. Max had a swim meet.
No worries, man. How did he do?
He did great. Long course: meters instead of yards.
He’s not wrong. Personally, I really didn’t feel like he had a whole lot to gain from coming back for another year.
Wish him nothing but success at the next level.
J when is OU pro day?
Wednesday
Agreed. Sanchez is “who he is”. A little more meat on his bones isn’t going to fundamentally change his play as a DB, IMO.
Might as well Rush 11 on “punt return” formations. Call me a pessimist, but I don’t forsee a philosophy change.
Might as well just scrap 17% of the ST playbook
I think we’re going to give the punt return a shot this season, if they find the right guy.
With Saunders and Broyles before we ran more so we will just have to see what happens back there..besides you can’t just rush 11 or you will no doubt get beat with fakes (even though we got fooled in the bowl anyways…poor poor STs all around last year besides the kicking)
The kicking started out well, but place kicking with Seibert was a risky proposition toward the end of the season. He needs to specialize in one or the other IMO.
AD has some of the best hands on the team. He should be in the mix alot this year.
Him and Green IMO will make a bigger impact than the rest of the WRs group (not counting Andrews of course).
I have a feeling Cody Thomas will be on the team in the fall if we have an available spot especially if the coaches feel that Austin isn’t ready. They would no doubt reach out to him
If he does, he will be way down the depth chart: I think we’d have to lose our second string QB before he plays.
I think he is # 2 immediately if Austin isn’t ready
Didn’t sound like it coming from Bob yesterday, IMO.
Well that means nothing really…lets wait and see how well the #2 qb is and baseball season is over
it means nothing if the HC gives the strong impression they’re not counting on Thomas returning? okay, i guess
Didn’t he say Right Now..which is during baseball season and would be the farthest from Codys mind and we haven’t even started spring ball with a high school kid as the #2 that hasn’t even taken a college snap in practice yet….Not saying it for sure is going to happen but I wouldn’t be surprised if he did end up coming back this fall if the things I listed were true
any news about the athletically gifted preferred walk on QBs from the last 2 years?
Not really. But they are bringing in a third, fwiw.
Sounded to me like they were gonna prep the new guy as if Thomas isn’t coming back. Then if he does return, they’ll “welcome him back.” Which I assume means they would look at both of them and see whom they like for #2. I agree that there’s no way Thomas would automatically be number two. That wouldn’t be the way Bob has ever done things.
I just made the same prediction in a lower post. I think he comes back as an “in case of emergency, break glass” option out of loyalty to the team.
Didn’t see your post but there is obviously a few things that could make or break this happening. We would need a spot and the coaches (Lincoln) would have a better idea by the end of summer or even fall wither or not Austin would be ready. Id hate to see them hold Baker back because of concerns over the #2 qb being able to play at a high level
Sounds like the makings of a repeat disaster (not letting Trevor Knight pull the ball).
I know right! Baker likely had one or two concussions late in the year..he can’t keep taking those hits. He’s gonna have to learn to get down but hopefully they will let him still run
For some reason I think Kenneth Mann will be a OLB and be a good one.
Man, I don’t know. 6’3″ 263 is awfully big for any OLB, let alone LB in general, we’ve seen from OU in I don’t even know how many years.
It is an ideal size for a rush OLB though
True, but can he play in space? that w/b my biggest ?
I can’t answer that but it would be awesome if he could
Guess that means you’re ruling out Gallimore. LOL.
As an OLB, uh, yeah 😉
And then there’s Rodriguz list as a LB at 6’6 236 last year. Likely see several position changes this spring other than the Orso thing or the Stanvon thing.
I agree on the OU thing,Grissom was close just needed more time there. I think in our D with 4 LBs setting the edge is first then pass rushing. Coverage is important but the idea is not for him (or any bigger OLB) to run with slots down the field just dont turn your back, move your feet, get hands up and cover a small zone area.
Sneaky J, Nice job sneaking the OP in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He ain’t lyin’…
Hey get Byrd up to 220, think he was around 205, and he can be an option at OLB in an emergency… not like he’s going to ever see the field as a safety.
No instincts for S so I’m with you. I’m just wondering if he can play contain from OLB. Also, he had a difficult time with his angles at S so don’t know how that will translate to OLB.
It would be sad that linebackers that have been on the depth chart for 2 or 3 years get passed up by safety that lost his spot.
Don’t think any olbs outside of Obo have been on roster for that long but I agree. I just mean for emergency depth. Not going to help at safety so see if a position change might help.
“Not sure why my man Super K’s wide receiver preview only had like 30 or so comments”
Because why would we listen to what a Horn guy has to say?
Jk, jk.
We need get behind the center more to carry out our fakes then do some bootlegs as well as behind the LB corps and across the middle, and then get some threats.
Hey guys
Is C. Bolton not still an OLB, and wont he be participating in spring practice?
Nevermind. I saw where Stoops said that he will primarily at ILB. I’m good with that, since the guy seems to be a sure tackler, and he has a nose for the ball.
Is C. Bolton not still an OLB, and wont he be participating in spring practice?
Linebacker hasn’t been a strength since Reynolds or T. Lewis and we’re finally getting talent back at the position. Hard to see it as the top concern when expectations are so low. Hard to be worse this year than we were on the interior Oline last year. Experienced tackles and guys that can bench press 225 more that 12 times and we’re vastly improved. Agree at WR….this would be my #1 because we have a great QB that needs targets. Backup QB?….our #2 transferred and #3 quit football and our QB depth might have improved. Bottom line, it’s Baker or 2009 next year. Not sure how corners don’t make the list, they’d be my #2. I’m apathetic about kickoff and punt returns….it’s the only thing that keeps me from throwing my remote through my TV on game days.
