With spring football starting on Saturday, we figured now was as good a time as any to preview where things stand with this Oklahoma football program. Coming off a disappointing loss in last year’s CFB playoff and returning 14 total starters, there will be no shortage of expectations for this 2016 squad. The plan is to preview things by position group, both as to where things stand in the spring and project how things might play out later this fall. So let’s get started.
* As tempting as it might be to start with the high profile incoming transfer (who we’ll of course get to in a minute), coming off a remarkable 2015 season we’d be remiss starting anywhere other than with Baker Mayfield. He’s clearly ‘the man’ heading into 2016 and while he won’t necessarily be expected to carry the offense considering what OU has returning in the backfield, there will still be a considerable amount of pressure on Mayfield to at least put up something similar to that of what he did in 2015.
The only real concern when it comes to Mayfield is his health. He reportedly suffered multiple concussions last season and has a tendency to put himself in precarious situations on the field always fighting for that extra yard/big play. To that point, Mayfield certainly won’t be held out entirely during spring practices but it is probably reasonable to expect the coaches limit him to a certain extent.
* While there is certainly no real drama heading into the spring with regards to QB1, behind Mayfield there are really nothing but question marks following Cody Thomas’ decision to focus primarily on baseball this spring. And while there remains a chance Thomas could still rejoin the football team in the fall, one would have to assume the coaches will adopt a ‘hope for the best, plan for the worst’ type of approach in terms of not relying on Thomas’ return as Plan A.
Which means the pressure of backing up Mayfield falls squarely on the shoulders of true freshman and early enrollee, Austin Kendall. Prior to Thomas’ departure, it was expected Kendall would have the luxury of redshirting in 2016 but that will no longer be the case. Kendall has the obvious advantage of already being on campus and taking part in spring practices, in which you’d have to believe Bob Stoops & Lincoln Riley will make an concerted effort to get him as many snaps as possible to help accelerate his development. Both because Kendall will need to be ready if/when he’s called upon and because there doesn’t figure to be a huge need to have Mayfield take a ton of snaps in an offense he’s already very familiar with.
* And now we arrive at the guy who more people are probably talking about than anyone, former Texas A&M QB and uber-recruit Kyler Murray, even though he won’t be eligible to play in 2016. However much like Mayfield was a couple years back, Murray will be permitted to take part in practices and the spring game. As a result, OU fans everywhere will be anxiously anticipating any glimpse they’ll possibly be allowed to see whether or not the ultra-talented Murray will prove capable of developing into the star many believed so strongly he’d be coming out of high school.

Glad to hear you guys are doing a breakdown of each position group. I suspect some of the other position groups won’t be quite as simple of a breakdown as this one was.
Excited for the season to get here so we can see everyone in action!
RB figures to be pretty easy, but other than that you’re probably right. I know K is much more confident about WR than I am, but that group and LB are easily my two biggest question marks for this team heading into the spring. With OL probably coming in at #3.
Do you think that as part of this breakdown, there could be one on position coaches and possible scheme changes etc?
Probably won’t broach the coaching thing. And as to the scheme, at this point it really wouldn’t be anything other than speculation until we start getting some feedback from practices as to what they are actually doing.
Good stuff Jordan. Looking forward to seeing what you have for the receivers analysis.
K is handling the WRs and that s/b up tomorrow. I’ll have RBs tomorrow as well, fwiw.
All good points. LB takes the cake for me, and I might even slide OL up to 2. We saw how important that was in the Playoff game.
Well, after getting through last year with that OL, I am confident in BB. Lb’s another story. WR will surprise Westbrook can be another Saunders.
Kendall definitely has a lot of confidence signing with OU knowing Murray is eligible in 2017, Haven’t seen Murray play, but 5*’s and 3 Texas state titles is impressive. Will be interesting to watch it unfold. Personally like Kendall a lot + he’s already enrolled. Hand picked by LR.
The LB group is the position I’m most curious about. Of course we’ll have Jordan Evan back, but other than him, they’re mostly unknowns. I think DeBerry will show us all why he was the prize of last years class, and I expect Mark Jackson may see the field as a freshman.
I agree, I’m curious about Tay Evans and Bolton; they’d better get with it before Kelley hits Norman.
Thanks TFB………That is all.
Love the position write up idea. While thin at Qb, I trust Riley to have Kendall groomed pretty well by start of season. Of course we will still get the “it’s a close race” and “these guys are battling for the starting spot” lines so there is THAT to look forward to. 🙂
Lol…”Knight was winning and Thomas was threatening the starter…Mayfield needs rotator surgery…etc…”
Hoping Murray hits about a 6″ growth spurt over the next year.
He’s got an adam’s apple, so it’s doubtful he will grow anymore from here on out.
Didn’t appear to slow Brittney Griner..
Man Murray is tiny, I mean tiny. I run around the OU campus every day and I was waiting at the light with him the other day by the athletic dorms. He is all of 5′ 9″.
Jitterbug
Not a term I like thrown around in regards to our QB. Move him to RB or WR. 🙂
Maybe he’s 5’9″
The backup QB spot is really THE big question going into next season. It will be fascinating to see how it unfolds. If I were allowed to guess what happens I would say that even if Austin Kendall does well in Spring and Fall practices, Mr. Conservative (aka Bob Stoops) will request that Cody Thomas rejoin the football team. For insurance purposes of course. Not denigrating anyone’s abilities. Just more about Stoops’ not wanting to gamble on a true Frosh.
Kind of agree and kind of don’t. To me THE big question going into next season is at LB
I agree that LB is a big question – no doubt. But we are one snap away from disaster at QB. That scares me, which makes it the big deal.
No doubt. But to be fair that would be the case virtually every year. Maybe not w/ an inexperienced true freshman behind your starter, but even if Knight and/or Thomas were still here would you really feel all that confident were Mayfield to go down? I know I wouldn’t.
Outside of the NFL, and even then it applies a lot of the time, if your QB1 goes down and/or misses an extended period of time, general rule is you’re pretty much screwed, with some exceptions.
Do you guys think we hang on to robison with murray coming in? Havent heard anything on that front since the “decisions” tweet he put out after the murray announcement.
QB’s usually flip early in the process if they are going to.
He was still recruiting after that, so I’m assuming he will wait and see. If Murray blows up and there’s no transfers, it’s likely we lose him.
Hadnt seen where he was still recruiting for us, so that sounds like a good sign.
I would expect him to flip between now and mid summer if he was going to, so Im not sure how much he can take from murrays spring practices. Lots of kids can kill it in practice.
Kyler Murray will be key this Spring & Summer practices. His Speed & Agility can replicate Houston’s & Ohio St QB’s ability. Houston & Ohio St basically run the same offensive playbook ( Ohio St runs the ball a little more ). Hopefully our Defense will be ready for the Dual Threat QB’s this upcoming year.
If not we may have to put us a want add for a D-Coord…
Heck of a scout team QB.
I love this post. Having the ability to go against a super slippery guy like KM in practices can only serve the defense well. 5 star ratings aren’t just handed out Willy nilly so it’s obvious the kid has some serious talent.
I believe Kendall will surprise some folks. As mentioned in other comments, he was hand picked by LR and being on campus early should further his development tremendously. Looks to be a plus athlete who can make all the throws. Obviously in a perfect world Baker stays healthy all year but I don’t think that’s realistic due to his style of play. Get the kid a ton of reps in spring and build his confidence should there come a time in the season he’s forced into action.
Boomer!
Handpicked is right. LR was recruiting the kid while he was at ECU.
While there is concerns about certain positions,at least this year we have players that have us wondering IF THEY CAN PLAY. Wasn’t too long ago we were wondering WHO was left to play!
Personally, I was relieved when Cody Thomas chose to focus on baseball. I’m not going to belittle the kid. I’ll just say, I wanted to see Kendall have a shot to backup Mayfield and I’m pleased that it is so.
Nice write-up. Thanks!
