Defensive Line Recruiting: Spoke to 2016 defensive end, Teton Saltes out of New Mexico recently so I wanted to give you all an update on him and a general overview of the defensive line recruitment:

Teton Saltes – For those of you who don’t recall Teton, he is an extremely athletic defensive end out of New Mexico that we introduced our readers to a couple months ago. To refresh your memory, Saltes is a 6’5 240 lb defensive end prospect who started playing football for the first time last year. Saltes grew up playing basketball (both parents were division 1 basketball players) but was convinced to try football by his high school coach and quickly starting to impress scouts. Saltes mother is from Oklahoma and he still has a lot of family in the state.

Coach Mike Stoops visited Saltes this past spring. An offer didn’t happen but it still sounds like an offer is very possible. Saltes tells me that he continues to speak to coach Mike Stoops regularly. In fact he said he just spoke to him earlier this week. He also said that he was actually supposed to take a visit to Norman this month but a scheduling conflict prevented that. Saltes feels confident that the regular communication between him and Mike Stoops is an indication that an offer will happen sooner or later. I tend to agree.

Xavier Kelly and Chris Daniels – Nothing new here but just as a way to summarize the defensive line recruitment just wanted to offer up some notes on Kelly and Daniels. A lot of folks may feel like the defensive line recruitment is a bit slow but it’s worth noting that with OU likely (eventually) landing Du’Vonta Lampkin, by this fall OU will have Lampkin, Gallimore, Campbell, Overton, Roberts and Mann as new defensive linemen. And that doesn’t count the fact that Deberry and McGinnis are jumbo linebackers who played defensive linemen in high school and could very well end up on the defensive line eventually. So with all that young talent, it stands to reason that OU isn’t throwing out a bunch of new offers on the defensive line.

Additionally Oklahoma appears to be in a good spot for both Kelly and Daniels. Daniels has already visited OU twice and is expected to return for a game this fall. When Brandon recently caught up with Daniels father it sounded like the most recent visit couldn’t have gone better and we got the impression that OU is very near the top of their list. The second trip was particularly important because Chris brought his mother along to check out OU and Norman.

Kelly also recently visited and told us that he would definitely make a return visit to Norman this fall for a game. Keep in mind also that OU has the advantage of proximity with both Kelly and Daniels; Kelly being from Wichita and Daniels from Euless, TX. – (Super K)

Tyrie Cleveland: OU made top 10 for 2016 WR Tyrie Cleveland (Houston, TX). We haven’t had a chance to catch up with Cleveland just yet.

    Ed Gray

    • Sooner 76 says:

The other day, I watched the 1956 OU-Okla A&M game on Youtube. Ed Gray was the starting left tackle. It was fun. They had the 4th team playing towards the end of the game. That was the game in which on the last play Clendon Thomas switched positions with one of the tackles so he could score a TD. Now I can’t remember if it was Gray or RT Tom Emerson. Poor Aggies. LOL

The split-T was sick when it was run to perfection, and Jimmy Harris ran it to perfection and then some.

      • EasTex says:

I listened to Sooner football on the radio back then. They ran Bud’s “Go-Go” offense and even with a huddle they ran three plays a minute. The team was so deep and talented that they didn’t really have a first team, they ran entire units on for the other so they wouldn’t get worn out. I can’t remember who the radio announcer was back then, but they were constantly trying to keep up with all the action.
        Good times.

thanks for the list……I started listening & watching in 1952 but none of the announcers really stood out till bob barry & jack ogle …….very, very good pairing and the standard by which OU broadcasters are measured to this day…..also like john brooks as a play by play guy…Merv is very good in his role as well.

          • EasTex says:

            Thanks, bud.
Now I remember the name “O’Halloran” from the memory vault.
At one point in time, Walter Cronkite did OU football, but I don’t remember the year/s.

          • 47 Straight OU Know says:

Did not see this until after I posted the first one apologies please..

When Toby Rowland was hired last spring as the radio voice for OU football, I went searching for a list of the Sooner broadcasters throughout history. I couldn’t complete a full list, though The Oklahoman archives were a big help.

But thanks to Michael Dean, an engineer for the OU football broadcasts and public relations director for the Oklahoma History Center, we now have that list. Dean used The Oklahoman archives and information from Sooner Magazine to produce what he believes is the list going back to Walter Cronkite in 1937, when WKY radio first started airing games.

            1937: Walter Cronkite (WKY)

            1938-39: John Shafer (WKY)

            1940: Charlie Inglis (WKY)

1941-42: ”From what I can derive from Oklahoman articles and boxes with the broadcasts in 1941 and 1942, there may not have been an OKC station carrying the OU games, only WNAD,” Dean wrote, referring to a Norman station. “The boxes with the starting lineups in the articles written by Harold Keith list WNAD and the Oklahoma Network including KSWO Lawton. No announcer’s names are given. The exceptions are the specific games I’ve listed, where Harold Keith included the information below.

            * Missouri 1941, Ernie Mehl & Fred Weingarth, KOCY

            * Tulsa 1942, Paul Minor, KVOO (Tulsa), and Les Mezger, WNAD

          • EasTex says:

            No apology needed.
Good stuff, the history of OU football is rich and long.

What legendary Sooner your Uncle is.

          • HoustonSooner says:

Thank you! Not only was he a Sooner great on the field He is a great man off the field as well.

          • EasTex says:

Of that I have no doubt, as that seemed to be the case with most of Bud’s players from that era.
Sadly we have lost many from that era, but they will never be forgotten.

          • HoustonSooner says:

Yes he has lost a lot of teammates and some are not coherent any more. But those guys who played in that era were just good people from what I have been told and what I can remember.

        • 47 Straight OU Know says:

Apparently played on both sides of the ball.
          All-American: Clendon Thomas

          Clendon Thomas

          Clendon Thomas, HB – 1957
Clendon Thomas was named a consensus All-American in 1957. He led the Sooners in scoring during both 1956 and ’57, also leading the nation in the category during the 1956 season.

He was a key to Oklahoma’s national titles in both 1955 and ’56. With his nine touchdowns during his senior season, Thomas set the three-year scoring record at the University of Oklahoma. His combination of speed, strength and lateral movement made him not only a great halfback, but also an excellent defensive back. Against Notre Dame in 1956, Thomas returned a Paul Hornung pass for a touchdown.

The two-time all-conference selection was drafted in the second round by the Los Angeles Rams in 1958

          • Sooner 76 says:

They ALL played both sides of the ball back then, my friend!!! All 11, even QB Jimmy Harris. The ends played standup DE on the LOS; the tackles and guards played down. The center and fullback were inside LBers. The two halfbacks and the QB were the defensive backs.

They played the first team both ways for several series, and then the second team both ways for several series and repeated that until the game got out of hand and then the third and sometimes the fourth team got some PT.

Clendon Thomas was indeed a great Sooner. And a very classy move to play tackle so the tackle could score a TD in his last game at OU.

          • HoustonSooner says:

Yes he played both ways at OU and he played in the NFL for the Rams and Steelers. Played DB in the NFL. In his days at OU he was in the same backfield as Sooner great Tommy McDonald.

    • EasTex says:

Good choice, he was first on my list, too.

  • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

    Wife: “You making French toast?”
Man: “No. Reading an Open Post.”
    Wife: “What’s open?”
Man: “The post. Don’t worry ’bout it, okay?”
Wife: “What are you hiding from me, Jim?!”
    Man: “What the…? Why, what…?”

Man: [Walks to window and looks out. Sighs. A piano plays softly with melodrama]. “Ain’t that the question, huh?”
Wife: [Walks behind man. Places hand on shoulder.]. “What question is that, Jim? You can talk to me. What is the question?”
Man: [Turns and stares back. A tear forms at his cheek]. “Who is Stephen Dale?”
    Wife: “Who is Stephen Dale?”
Man: [Slams fist against wall.] “You see right through me.”

  • Sooner 4Ever says:

    21st! Sooner!

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

So if Texas doesn’t release Lampkin until after the start of fall semester then he couldn’t play this year even if he did come here right?

    • Stephen Dale says:

      believe you are correct………..

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Stephen, I’m surprised you are not advocating Lumpkin is going to OU because an SEC school doesn’t want Him?

        • Stephen Dale says:

I would think most SEC teams would take him if he is as good as many on this board has indicated………

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

Probably destined for a redshirt regardless

    • Sooner 76 says:

Actually, they can only hold him until the first day of class. But then he would miss fall camp at OU. So, he would still be able to enroll at OU and probably would be eligible, but of course he would redshirt in all likelihood.

He probably would redshirt even if he came to OU now.

I will want him at OU, however.

      • Cole says:

I’m to a point where I would rather him not go to OU. The top three DL targets on OUs board, Imo are better than him.

        • Krys Allen says:

Just bc they are on the board doesn’t mean we will land them. IMO if Lampkin comes to OU, by the time he is actually playing no one will really care how he got here.

    • Bob Edwards says:

The first day of classes at UT is the 26th, the first day at OU is the 24th. The last day to register at OU is the 28th. It’s a pretty tight window to make it to OU. In addition, there may be NCAA paperwork (eligibility clearinghouse) that might take some time to work through. So yeah, theoretically he might be able to play this year, but from a practical standpoint it is highly unlikely. And if he could, he might not be eligible the first couple of games till all the paperwork cleared.

Then there is the question of whether he is ready having missed summer workout and fall camp.

      • SamSooner says:

        Thanks, Bob.

I hope every texsa commit and every recruit that has an offer from texsa is making a mental note of how texsa operates.

        Just let the kid go.

        • D Hunter Sanchez says:

          “Let my (OU’s) people Go…”

        • Bob Edwards says:

While I don’t think it hurts Texas that much for reasons I have stated elsewhere. I do think the right thing to do at this point is to let the kid go. It might actually generate goodwill if they did. Right now they just look petty.

    What do you guys think?

Is there a movement in Houston for kids to stay home and go to UH?

oh and thanks for the OP so early K

    • Defend Colfax says:

Yes. Houston is benefiting from a bunch of big time kids wanting to stay home to represent their hometown. Early commits or not, I think they have to have a pretty good year to hold on to some of this interest.

I just received this link and found it interesting. The story is called “Taking (and failing) the most important test all NCAA coaches must pass.”
It makes me wonder about all the requirements that coaches have to contend with to remain in their profession that we know little or nothing about.

        Yep.
I found some of the info valuable.

“If you see the word commit, that means someone who has

      • ToatsMcGoats says:

I’d take the kid from Tulsa Union over him anyway…

      • Brien Brown says:

Yea Brown is good but most def a 17 kid and Jordan said awhile back that it was likely for OU to take 3 DB’s this year. So with Chandler on board I’d look for 2 more at least and maybe Mayden knows the kids we got this year are the real deal and that Chandler is the real deal and that could of scared him off. I think it’s UCLA or Michigan for him just a gut thing.

Big 12 Conference Realignment/Expansion: (If it were to happen)

Which 2 teams do you think are the most realistic options?

    • Dustin says:

Would like to see: Missouri, Nebraska
      Most realistic: Louisville, Cincinnati

      • EasTex says:

I do like the idea of UCF if for no other reason the rich recruiting grounds in Florida.

        • BleedCrimson says:

I like UCF as well, along with either Louisville or Cincinnati

        • John Garner says:

Well, if you’re thinking UCF, why not USF as well. UCF, however, plays a better brand of ball. They did beat Baylor which we seem to have a tough time doing here lately. I’d go east for sure, not west to BYU or Boise as suggested at ESPN.

          • EasTex says:

I agree, go East. At least the time zone change doesn’t hurt as bad and the football and recruiting are much better.

          • Bob Edwards says:

No teams west of the current ones. Distance BYU – WVU 1927.5 Miles. Yeah let’s bump up all the minor sports travel cost so we can get a small bump on the TV viewership. Actually, that sounds like some the B12 brain trust would come up with.

          • Jeremy Phillips says:

I agree, if you’re going to expand & west virginia is staying in.. You need to go east. UCF, USF, Cincy, UConn, Memphis… Some combination of those…

        • Dustin says:

          Florida just seems too far.

        • Boom says:

Dustin said, Louie/Cincy & UCF & USF = 14 schools. I will get hammered but the Florida schools would grow like Baylor & TCU. Not ideal because to me to make a conference strong it has to be regional.

    • Fear The Magic says:

Rumor has it as..dropping TCU and WVU and adding Nebraska, Missouri, Colorado and A&M.

    • Bob Edwards says:

Add TAMU and Nebraska. Then take Texas and bolt to the SEC.

Most realistic ones aren’t worth adding.

      • SamSooner says:

Bob, I agree. It’s sad to say that OU will need to join another conference or a serious implosion would have to happen in another conference for the Big XII to add a quality team.

      • OohRah Mama says:

Take Texas? Didja lose, ah say, didja lose your head, son?

        • Bob Edwards says:

First the story doesn’t work if the hero doesn’t have an evil villain to defeat. Second, since we are going to the SEC they all have historical rivals they play against every year. If we don’t take Texas then they will end up giving us someone like Vanderbilt or Kentucky.

          • McKinzie says:

I’ll argue this point just a little. Arkansas really doesn’t have what is considered a “historical rival” in the SEC. There is still a huge chunk of their fanbase who does not have a team to hate.

          • OohRah Mama says:

That last one is a good point, and one I hadn’t considered. As long as Texas is a picked-upon & ridiculed (no matter in what conference) it’s good. And as long as we make it clear they are trailing to the SEC following us, not the other way around, that’s good too.

    • Zack says:

They missed the boat with Louisville, Pitt, uconn, and Syracuse. That would have probably crippled the acc (which at the time was most likely to be in our shoes) and that may have meant fsu and Miami would have been looking for a new landing spot. The big 12 could have been the first to 16.

    • Boomer4life says:

      Miami and FSU.

    • Brien Brown says:

Well wishful thinking would be add, Arkansas, Tulsa, Iowa, BYU, ND, and Miami. Now I say wishful thinking and you look at my teams and I think Arkansas, ND, BYU, and Miami add appeal I think as far as name wise and some interesting matchups. I say Tulsa and yes I know they struggle in a weak conference but, OU and OSU do baby brother a solid and get them in and it would help Tulsa recruiting and I think TU gets some recruits by being a Big 12/ 16 now. Iowa cause well we already go play ISU. Realistic no expansion at all more like a greater chance of OU and OSU leaving for SEC.

      • Brien Brown says:

I mean OU and Texas not OSU.

      • EasTex says:

Since 1957 no person on Earth HATES the hunchback leprechauns more than I do and would blow a gasket if OU was to be in the same conference. Miami isn’t far behind. BYU just doesn’t fit.

        • Brien Brown says:

Oh I agree sir I said wishful thinking but ND and Miami would add lots of appeal that you can’t deny and no BYU doesn’t but they would benefit as would we with recruits out that way.

          • EasTex says:

I can’t emphasize the depth of my hatred for the fightin’ frenchies of ND.
Miami isn’t as distasteful as they were in the 80’s-90’s.
BYU couldn’t join the conference in football only, their other sports teams would join and there is the problem, scheduling for other sports.

        • Boomer4life says:

Tex…I’m getting this weird feeling you don’t like ND.

          • EasTex says:

I don’t know why it would be considered weird, they are magically delicious disgusting.

        • SamSooner says:

I do not have any love to give to the Irish or the Canes.

    • Randy says:

ND, Cincinnati/BYU, Louisville and Central Florida.

    • SoonerOracle737 says:

Just a guess but I would think Louisville and Cincinnati only because they would add to tv market. Any Tejas team would not. Florida teams would add to the coveted viewers, but I am not sure those teams would want to travel so much. Just keep in mind – the teams that we add will have to bring in new eyeballs to the commercials or else it doesn’t work.

    • BigJoeBrown says:

If I had to pick….Arkanasas and LSU
      Most Realistic….Louisville and Cinncinati

I would like/hope the Big 12 pushs itself east rather than west.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

Is the $570M number I seen correct on stadium expansion total cost? Man ESPN keeps saying how OU is dialing it back when it appears they increased the total by $200M+

    • Zack says:

It was originally estimated that the reno was going to be around 350-400 million. But from what I understand it’s going to be done in phases and each phase will be voted on prior to starting. I could be wrong, I’m not really keeping up with it because I think it’s somewhat fluid.

      • Soonerfandave84 says:

For over half a BILLION, the Palace on the Prairie should be the best stadium in college sports.

        • Zack says:

As far as the stadium I never thought it was “underperforming” I liked it and really it’s the crowd that makes the environment and our crowd is going to be the same regardless what the stadium looks like.

Now the other improvements that catch recruits eyes like the weight room and improving the common areas for athletes, is what I’m wanting to see get done.

          • EasTex says:

Can’t wait to hear the crowd again.

          • Boom says:

I think the crowd is changing to a certain degree. A lot of folks in their late 70’s or early 80’s are not going as much. My father who went all the time is now 84 and it’s to tiring for him. These folks loved OU football but not very loud if at all.
I see the crowd becoming younger over the next 5 years, which is only my humble opinion.

          • EasTex says:

            The crowd is ever evolving.
That was the loudest game in Owen Field history, would love to see that event eclipsed once again.

          • Boom says:

no kiddin. I haven’t been to a game in a long time but I would even get into it if I was there with a good crowd. Not the ref bashing or cussing but overall excitement.

          • jimintexas says:

I look at OU games sort of like ordering tamales. I order tamales at many places that are MOR. But the great ones are worth suffering through the many mediocre ones. I measure my season ticket ownership in decades and try to make a couple away games a year, plus texus. The games like this TT game and NE a few years earlier, make it all worth it. I am only 66, so hope to go a couple of decades more

          • Drew says:

I remember being at that game, right next to some drunk Tech guys. Was an absolutely amazing experience.

Me neither. Man, I love delivering butt whoopins like this! I’ll allow some this coming season.

With no Mayden, I hope they offer Mayberry he commits then we are done at CB. Need 1 S 2 at the most then Secondary is done for ’16. But I really like Mayberry.

    • Tim A says:

Never mind. Saw something else reporting he is on crutches – but apparently (hopefully) just a minor knee injury from running stadium steps and only out a few days. We will need him in ’15 for sure.
