BREAKING: 2017 RB Trey Sermon Commits To Oklahoma

Image via Gridiron Football

Oklahoma accomplished a couple things on Friday adding a commitment from 2017 RB Trey Sermon (Marietta, GA) and dipping into SEC country to swipe one of, if not the top running backs from down south.

On film Sermon looks to be an ideal fit for this OU offense, with the athleticism to run around defenders and the strength to run through them. And also displays good hands, which will only help in this Lincoln Riley (assuming he’s still in Norman this time next year) offense catching the ball out of the backfield.

Regardless, it’s quite the coup for Bob Stoops, Jay Boulware & co. considering Sermon held offers from the likes of Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Michigan, Ohio State, Tennessee, and many others. And Sermon’s commitment is certainly welcome news after Ceedee Lamb’s decision earlier on Friday to decommit from the Sooners.

Proximity and scholarship for academics. It’s a 40 mile straight shot from where my parents live and where I grew up. It’s also a pretty good school. Only problem is the constant SEC chanters I come across. Aside from that it ain’t a bad place

        • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

All valid reasons lol. I guess I just assumed you were from Oklahoma and went away for school. One of my best friends growing up was a big UGA fan so I’ve always had a dislike for them ?, only in spite of him of course.

          • UGA Sooner says:

90% of my friends are UGA fans. I completely understand where you’re coming from. It was wonderful when a couple buddies of mine went to see the ladies gymnastics match here in Athens and the Oklahoma women stomped the UGA women. And now Sermon? I’ve got bragging rights for months

Lincoln Riley is not a good coach.

    • Dick Bump says:

      Sure.

    • SoonerinLondon says:

Easy, big fella. I seem to remember us getting all excited about Josh replacing Stoops, after he’d barely become a D1 OC.

Let’s let him prove himself first.

      • Rick says:

I was under the impression he had pretty well accomplished that this year. Seems he was voted the top assistant in the nation last year also, so not just through my crimson colored glasses assessment.

        • blaster1371 says:

I second your observation …..and my Crimson glasses are in the garage somewhere.

    • RBear says:

He’ll interview every year if not just for the experience it’ll give him- ultimately, he’ll be offered what he can’t refuse.

    • Stephen says:

Wouldn’t be surprised. Bob won’t be there 10 more years

      • soonerthunder says:

That’s what people were saying 10 years ago and before, too. I remember. I remember all the reasons: He likes FL, he’s Catholic, he has a home in such-and-such, he doesn’t want to coach much longer, he’s friends with the AD at such-and-such school, etc., etc., etc.

He’s only 55. His mentor is 21 years older than him at a much worse school to coach at and still coaching. Bottom line: No one knows.

AND, most OCs under BS after Leach have been here for several years before they left. I’m not sure if you are real good, and you know you are and have success, you would leave too quickly.

#1) Why would you want to go coach at a North Texas? You could, yes, quickly, but if you are real good, why? You want a big time program if you are real good. North Texas is a dead end job of a few years, that if you want a bigger time job you have to earn your way through the assistant job once again to get, not go from UNT to a big-time school.

#2) A serious big-time program will probably want someone with a little more experience at a serious big-time program like OU. There are just too many successful assistants a big-time program can get that are proven big-time assistants at big schools rather than take a chance on a guy without long-time success as an OC at a big-time school. Think about it? Would you want OU taking a chance on someone you don’t know somewhere in the U.S. who has been an assistant one year at a big-time school when you could get people from USC, Stanford, Oregon, ND, Clemson, Bama, FSU and had proven themselves over years? They are learning how to run a big-time program being at OU and the likes. You don’t learn that at East Carolina.

Personally, I think things will work themselves out. If Riley is big-time, I think he will prove it and stay for several years until a big-time program opens up and he’ll get a big-time job. If he has moderate success at OU, I think he could go to a TT or will go to something like a North Texas.

    • blaster1371 says:

When Rikey’s name was being mentioned for various openings Stoops said, he (Riley) has bigger things in front of him at OU. Now that could be a chance at championships or HC consideration. Not sure Riley would wait another five years or eight tops for the OU position but given how much he makes now it’s not like he would have to live off red beans and rice until then.

  • Tmac says:

This dude’s offer list is over the top! Welcome aboard Mr. Sermon!!!

    • Dick Bump says:

I think that’s more meaningful than “stars”.

      • Rick says:

        Baker agrees with you also.

        • Dick Bump says:

I’ve been transferring games from DirecTV to DVD. After watching the games again, it made me realize Baker Mayfield did some amazing things last year. He’s a great example of Stars not telling the whole story. It’s going to be a long summer.

          • Rick says:

Exactly, he was, he is, and yes every summer to me, seems to get longer and longer waiting for that first snap of the season opener, and every season seems to slip by faster that the previous one. Funny how that happens.

          • Dick Bump says:

Ain’t it the truth. It’s amazing how fast the football season passes.

  • Hotrod33 says:

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

    Boom.

  • blaster1371 says:

Kid looks legit. I like that he is not like so many HS backs in that they get yards by getting to the edge before anyone else can set it. Sermon is going between the tackles and picking up a boatload of yards after contact. He reminds me more of a lighter Perine than A Mixon 2.0. Sermon, Anderson and Adams will make a lethal backfield.

    • RocketCitySooner says:

Someone once said that the most important lesson for a high school running back to learn in his transition to college is this. He is no longer the fastest man on the team and he cannot win by outrunning everyone else to the corner.

      • blaster1371 says:

I know you aren’t quoting me but I say that quite often. We had a kid at the school where I teach who gained 2200 yards one season by just sweeping the edge and outrunning everyone. He was also a student of mine and we talked about speedat the next level. He got invited to a camp and I don’t why but there were underclassmen from the school out there with them. He had a rude awakening. Said one DB back pedaled and stayed even with him about twenty yards downfield. Another time he had a linebacker cover him like a blanket on a post route. I showed him the video of Tapper running Cooper down from behind in the opening drive of the sugar bowl….. Told him THAT was a 270 pound DE!

  • JrsySooner says:

Why the hell is there always reference to….if Lincoln will be here next year..stop saying that its unprofessional speculation and uncalled for. You (TFB) plant this seed of doubt and it hurts the hard work coaches put in…you undermine your own credibility thinking you have a magic crystal ball that reveals the future.
Just stick to the facts you will be respected more for it

    • Dana Rogers says:

JS – don’t mean to aggravate you further but were it not for unprofessional speculation this site would cease to exist. As far as planting seeds – I would truly be surprised if any coach on OUr football team gave 2 hoots about what we say around here.

I do however have 1 fact to contribute… Mr. Sermon says he’s headed this way! BOOMER!!!

    • Doobie74OU says:

First and foremost TFB stick to the facts better than any other site I have ever been on sometimes to the point that they honor their word to a young man that has asked them not to reveal something and it later gets leaked by other “unprofessional sites”
Second, if you don’t think it is reasonable to think there is a possibility the Lincoln Riley won’t be here next year then I don’t know what world you were living in. He was linked to big time SEC coaching vacancies last year and if this offense continues to improve there is NO reason to think he won’t be linked to other jobs next year.
And finally it may be considered “uncalled for” and “undermine your credibility” if you call out a website for doing what they were solely created to do which is talk about the past, present, and yes the FUTURE of OU football. They have not said he will be gone, He needs to be gone, or Oh my god the sky is falling we lost our OC what will we ever do? None of those things! They simply stated a possibility that everybody in there right mind should acknowledge as a possibility.
If you don’t agree with me that is cool, I don’t mind at all. We are both just expressing our opinions. However, if you don’t like TFB you can feel free to exercise your right to not come to the website anymore! I for one hope that doesn’t happen and also hope that TFB continue to do what they have always done which is be the best possible source of information on OU athletics.
Sorry that was a bit long winded! LOL!

    • SoonerinLondon says:

I don’t think it is inappropriate to speculate, since he was actively interviewing for jobs after last season. It’s fair to assume that he would have taken a job, if offered, and not out of the realm of possibility that he will interview again next year.
