Garrett Thomas: As most of you know by now OU 2015 OT target Garrett Thomas from Many, Louisiana will be announcing his commitment at around 11 am today. He tweeted out that he will be making his choice from the following list of schools: South Carolina, Michigan, Ole Miss, Oklahoma and Texas.

After talking to some of our sources in Louisiana, we got a good sense of where Thomas is likely headed. We certainly won’t ruin his announcement, but we’ll just say that unless something has changed, or the information we received was incorrect, it’s not looking great for OU. But we should know for certain in a few hours.

Isaiah Langley and the Cali CBs: Yesterday OU CB offer Isaiah Langley announced his commitment to USC. As we noted back on May 30th, he seemed to be a USC lean. There was a point in the spring where OU was making an impression on Langley and his family, but towards the end of May we heard it was likely going to be USC.

Talking to a source in California, we’ve been told that USC is looking to take 2-3 CBs. With Isaiah Langley and Taeon Mason, USC now has two commits. And we’ve been told that Iman Marshall is likely to end up at USC as well. So the question I’m sure many of you are asking is whether this will make room for OU to pick up a CB out of California. The problem is that these aren’t the days where USC was the only major player out west. UCLA and Stanford are recruiting forces as well now.

UCLA took three corners last year so one would guess they’ll take at two CBs this year. And they picked up a recent CB/ATH commit from Stephen Johnson III. In talking to OU offer DeChaun Holiday, we get the sense that he’s a UCLA lean and never really got the sense that OU was a strong player in his recruitment. In fact that last time we caught up with Holiday he didn’t really give a strong indication that he’d even take an official to OU.

Another OU offer, Frank Buncom IV, is a heavy Stanford lean. So really that only leaves Ykili Ross and Stanley Norman. As we noted in a recent update on Stanley (here), OU seems to want him as a WR though a number of schools are looking at him as a CB. So it’ll be interesting to see if OU does the same. Especially if they pick up a WR commitment from Humphrey. Back on April 5th we reported that Ykili Ross would be making an official visit to OU (though that exact date has still yet to be set), so clearly there is a chance with Ross. But we’ve spoken to his father a number of times and get the sense it’s not going to be easy to get Ykili out of California. However, the two other local schools he’s considering are USC and UCLA, and as they fill up it may help OU.

Summer Note: “We’re gonna have tight ends again!” That was a quote from a source we talked to earlier this week. We’ve already mentioned that Carson Meier has been standing out in summer workouts and 7-on-7. We’ve heard that now from multiple sources. We do think that Meier may see the field a little this year and should certainly see it a lot later in his career. But there seems to be a lot of excitement about the depth and potential at the TE position as a whole.

We heard great things about Blake Bell and his development throughout the spring and into the summer. But we also recently heard that Isaac Ijalana really looks the part and is a very strong guy that may end up being quite the blocker. We thought he actually looked more athletic than we expected in the spring game. Taylor McNamara had one reception in the Sugar Bowl for a key first down, so we’ll be excited to see how he has continued to develop as well. We haven’t heard much about him in the offseason, but that certainly doesnt mean he has failed to make progress. We gather notes about different players from different sources and it’s obviously impossible to get input on every single guy. In general though, we get the sense there is optimism about the TE position and it should be a featured position this season.

Coach Stoops was pretty vocal last year during press conferences that using a TE was important to him and there has been a concerted effort to continue to develop that position. And we’ve heard that this year the TE position should be a strength in a way that it has not necessarily been in the past 2-3 years.

Big 12 Banding and Branding: This is an interesting article/video titled “Big 12 Conference Announces New Branding Initiatives.” I personally like the logo but thought it was really interesting to see the Big 12 taking a very clear position to band together and start (or at least appear to) try and capitalize on their collective strength. Some of the language used by school administrators in the video sounds like messaging we’ve heard out of the SEC for a long time. The SEC messaging was born out of a more organic unification but was clearly taken to a new level by deliberate branding.

– UPDATE (9:15 am): Many of you are already aware of the recruiting event, The Opening (invite only, sponsored by Nike), that is taking place this week up in Oregon. OU commit PJ Mbanasor is there taking part (and performed very well yesterday) as are a number of other OU offers/targets. Just wanted to post a quick link to the results of yesterday’s workouts in case you hadn’t seen some of the numbers already. If you have any specific questions, be they about an individual player or whatever, feel free to post them in the comments and we’ll do our best to answer.

– UPDATE (11:15 am): Garrett Thomas has committed to Texas.

– UPDATE (3:45 pm): I (Jordan) figured you all would enjoy watching this. Here is some 1-on-1 tape of the WRs vs. DBs from yesterday’s action at The Opening. I’d suspect K will be along with his thoughts at some point as DB play is really more his forte. Knowing the football junkies that many of you are, I’d expect a lot of you will watch the entire thing. But for those who don’t have that kind of time, I’ll list the times you can skip to for those players more specific to OU.

0:48 – Jaylon Lane, 1:29 & 5:06 – Will Sunderland, 2:39 & 3:21 – PJ Mbanasor.

  • Jim says:

With Langley and Marshall (presumably), USC’s secondary is going to be salty. Sounds like Marshall absolutely dominated The Opening this week.

    • vargo05 says:

Not to mention what they got last year in the secondary. If Adoree Jackson becomes a CB, they got 2 5-star guys last year with him and John (Juju) Smith. Add 4-star Jonathon Lockett and John Plattenburg from Houston Lamar and they had a serious haul last year too.

    • vargo05 says:

USC has a nasty class in general going this year.

    • HoustonChiver says:

I really hope Mbanasoraus Rex sticks as a nickname

  • Jason Vos says:

How many CB’s is OU taking? Seems like we have quite a bit on campus already and then Mbanasor

    • vargo05 says:

Prob 2 or 3. Obviously PJ is there and Johnson could be seen as a S or NB type. He’s not gonna be a CB, but NB is another story all together.

    • Boom says:

Seems like we have a lot but we really don’t have that many CB’s.
      freshman – Thomas & Windham
      RS Fresh – none
Soph – Taylor, Austin, & Sanchez
      Jr – Johnson
Sr – Wilson (if he stays at CB)

      • vargo05 says:

You’d think with that limited depth we’d be able to easily find some CBs to come to OU.

        • Boom says:

We can but M. Stoops & BJ Wright want certain types of CB’s. The eliminates a lot of players.

          • vargo05 says:

Absolutely agree. They won’t offer just anybody. Def need to get who you want for your system.

      • SoonerPhins says:

Is Marcus Green going to be a CB or a NB?

        • Boom says:

Good question as I asked the same to K. Sounds like Marcus has a ways to go in being a CB. Not sure where he will fit but K said he is working hard so that all you can ask. Wish him well.

          • SoonerPhins says:

He has plenty of time to work that out. I figured he would red shirt anyways.

        • Super K says:

          I’ve been told NB.

  • Sooner Ray says:

Curious to see if we can use the tight end and full back or if they will alternate based on the situation.

    • EasTex says:

I wonder if we could actually see some three TE formations this year?

      • Zack says:

I’m curious if Conner knight will get some work at TE this year or next apparently his cousin says he’s up to 245 and stands 6’5. I know he’s primarily worked as long snapper but I’m wondering if they will try to move him at some point with horky coming in.

        • EasTex says:

I would love to see how he performs in that role.
I can visualize Mc, Bell and Ijalana in a formation.

        • EasTex says:

As good a LS as Horky is, I’m concerned how he will hold up in blocking until he can add some bulk.

          • Kody K. says:

That’s a good point that I hadn’t really thought about, Tex.

          • J.K. Abbott says:

Horkey /LS won’t block. They snap and go. By rule the defense can’t line a 0 tech on Horkwy and deck him at snap. He protected by rule and can’t be decked by a DLineman. The Olineman take away A to C gaps inside and spill everything outside.

          • Kody K. says:

Correct you are. But they do often execute blocking assignments down the field and cover punts. But your right, blocking is not their forte. Not off the snap anyway. Good point. You always have good stuff to add. I always like reading your posts. I’d like to see you add an article of your choosing to the open post sometime.

          • J.K. Abbott says:

Why thank you sir. I love talking ball. My first varsity coaching position was specials as a HS coach in Texas. I had punt team. My HC told me that “if we got a punt blocked I was fired”. I researched and watched punt schemes until the cows came home. When your ability to put food on the table comes down to punt execution you get it right. Been running the same punt for 20 years. During that span we’ve had only one blocked and zero returned for 6 points.

          • Kody K. says:

That’s very commendable. R U coaching in Oklahoma right now?

          • J.K. Abbott says:

because of Federation rules that protect LS on punt Horkey won’t be asked to block. He will snap and go. The big butts on most punt schemes take away the inside gaps and everything is spilled outside. OU’s love birds /up backs have Anybody that leaks A to B gap. Most LS are gunners/hawks. Woods was a great snapper but a liability in coverage. If you watch punt most LS will be the first in coverage because of their lack of protection responsibilities. Generally one rusher from the outside is unblocked. He will be unaccounted for away from the punters dominant foot. If the timing of the snap and punt are on point that outside guy can’t get there.

          • Zack says:

Good point we had a pretty good LS a few years back as far as covering kicks I can’t remember his name but it seemed like he made every tackle after punts because he was the first one down.

          • J.K. Abbott says:

Yes sir Zach. Hard to account for the snapper because by rule DLineman can’t engage the snapper. Those level two guys have to be conscious of the fake and try to hold The LS up. As soon as Boulware sees the LBers holding the LS up it’s time to run the fake

          • EasTex says:

That was Winchester. He was fantastic in kick coverage.

          • J.K. Abbott says:

This is why more and more kids that specialize in long snapping are kids that can athletically be a gunner /Hawk. Because the Defense /punt return can’t deck the LS they will assign a level two kid/LBer to pick him up. Horkey will give these guys fits trying to hold him up because of his athleticism. In the old days punt return guys didn’t account for the snapper because he was a big butt and couldn’t get to the return guy anyway. That won’t be the case with Wes. He should have a couple of tackles per game assuming OU has too punt. Guys like Horkey are worthy of a Scholly because he can we a heck of a weapon.

          • Indy_sooner says:

His scholly makes sense now. Haven’t heard that explanation till now, thx

          • ToatsMcGoats says:

Nice input, J.K.! Might sound a little weird, but you’re one of my favorite posters on this site!

          • EasTex says:

Thanks, JK. I hadn’t even considered that.

        • blaster1371 says:

From the bits and pieces I’ve read about the Knight brothers I wouldn’t be surprised if Conner gets some sub time this season but plays more of a role his junior and senior years. Think of him as another Ratteree type. Conner comes across as an intelligent kid who is very coachable.

      • Defend Colfax says:

Anyone else really excited about where Jay Boulware has our special teams headed?

      • Sooner Ray says:

In short yardage, I would love to see a double tight with a fullback on the hip and Bell and Perine in the backfield. Could power run or release a couple for a play action pass. Unstoppable on paper. 🙂

  • Big Higg says:

Are Quick & Mixon on campus yet?

    • wolfbuilder says:

Yes have been for a while

      • Big Higg says:

Oh…jw cause I hadn’t heard anything about them yet lol

        • Jordan Esco says:

People are absolutely raving about Quick. Mixon has impressed as well, but the guy who we’ve heard has REALLY stood out at RB is Samaje Perine.

        • vargo05 says:

Mixon is a guy you shouldn’t be surprised to see lined up in the slot or anywhere where he can get a chance to catch the ball. At camps last year he pretty much had to be matched against corners, most of whom couldn’t cover him, due to the fact that there weren’t any LBs who could come close to covering him.

          • Jim says:

vargo05, I became privy to some VERY inside information yesterday (by absolute chance), and I’ll just say as of right now, don’t be surprised if you don’t see Mixon much, if at all. I had an interview with a gentleman yesterday who is as connected as I’ve ever met. He told me things that shocked me.

          • EasTex says:

            That sounds ominous.

          • Zack says:

I would like to know the details

          • Fear The Magic says:

If you really do have some reliable inside information its kind of cruel to put a negative teaser like this without at least giving a hint of what you’ve heard.
seriously dude either fess up or just dont say anything at all.
            smh.

          • Jim says:

Don’t be a dick. If you want the info, go to LT, get VIP permission from the site, and find the Insider thread. Then come back and apologize.

          • Super K says:

Language bud. Please delete the first sentence. Thanks!

          • Kody K. says:

forget about apologizing to Jim, just come back and give the rest of us the scoop. lol!

          • Fear The Magic says:

LT is a trashy site IMO and I never go there. I assume many of the posters on here feel pretty much the same as I do on that. Assuming I wanted to actually get that information from LT what makes you even think Id be granted VIP permission considering Im not even a member to begin with??
As for your apology, I think you know what you can do with that.

          • Jim says:

Now you just sound butt-hurt. Anyone can get VIP on LT. LT happens to be a melting pot of all kinds of Sooners, so I’d say it’s eccentric, not trashy. If you don’t like it, that’s fine.

Super K corroborated my story earlier, and he agreed about not releasing the story due to possible wildfires. So again, if you knew squat, you would understand the need to apologize.

          • Fear The Magic says:

Eccentric? If your idea of a bunch of juvenile posters trying to out cool each other by constantly throwing out the F Bomb is your idea of eccentric then thats on you…to me its just plain immature and while not every poster is like that the vast majority sure seem to be. To me its trashy but to each his own.
Now if you want to pursue this conversation until you get an apology ( which ain’t happening ) then I would say that you’re the one thats “butt-hurt”. Get over it. I originally stated ( and I paraphrase ) that one shouldnt come on here throwing out teasers on inside information without some substance in as far as what that inside information concerns.
As for your inside information I can only assume it has to do with Mixons tweet that implies that hes very homesick.
            Now are we done?

          • Sooner Ray says:

Happen to have that VIP status, I’ll run and check it out. The tweet from him yesterday didn’t sound good.

          • Boom says:

            Curious, the tweet from who.

          • Sooner Ray says:

            Mixon

          • TheFuerte says:

            What did the tweet say?

          • Sooner Ray says:

In short, no friends and boring dorm life.

          • Sooner Ray says:

That’s exactly what I’ve been expecting, left you a “like” on the post.

          • Zack says:

            What’s the scoop sooner ray?

          • Boom says:

            What is LT?

          • Zack says:

            I’m pretty sure it’s landthieves. I don’t go there

          • Sooner Ray says:

There was a tweet show up from Mixon saying he wished he had friends here and the dorm life is getting old.

          • Zack says:

Ah ok I guess that’s strange maybe it’s a girl like what looks like happened with lj moore. But I suppose Jim had some other news if it’s something somewhat privileged. But now I’m gonna run to twitter and check this out.

          • Super K says:

Fear…please edit and remove the “smh”. Let’s be respectful. People are free to say what they want on here without feeling attacked.

          • Fear The Magic says:

Done. My apologies K. I just found that really frustrating.

          • Super K says:

            Thanks Fear!

          • Shifty says:

            We’re all brothers here!

          • Jim says:

            Brothers fight. 😉

          • Super K says:

            Thanks bud!

          • Shifty says:

Brah, you can’t do that…lol…at least say something pos about another player and leave the neg out

          • Shifty says:

If Mixon didn’t played that might just crush a poster or two over on scout

          • Fear The Magic says:

Im guessing you must mean Scouts resident 5 star junkie lol

          • Super K says:

Can you email us at [email protected] ? I got your kind email and tried to respond but our email didn’t go through.

          • Super K says:

[email protected] anytime you or anyone want to share any info/tips. It’ll always be private if you make that request. But we will have to share it with shifty…he’s on old online buddy! I kid 🙂

          • Jim says:

I’ll hit you up after I get back from lunch.

          • vargo05 says:

My email is [email protected] if you want to share with a tightlipped fan. 🙂 Don’t really expect you to, but thought I’d throw it out there.

          • Jim says:

            Email sent.

          • Kody K. says:

“If anything ever comes of what I’ve heard and becomes public, I’ll then share it.”…………. If it becomes public, why would we need to hear it again from you?

          • Jim says:

I just meant from where/who I heard it and how the story developed. That’s all.

          • TheFuerte says:

So can you at least tell us what type of situation we are dealing with? Devon thomas? Bomar? Or is it Jermie Calhoun type situation where he really isn’t living up to he hype?

With respect, to put my feelings in perspective, I feel like you told me, “heard something about your girlfriend, but I can’t tell you, so go ask somebody else.”

          • Jim says:

LOL, it’s not anything negative like Thomas or Bomar’s situations. Not even close. I would look for Super K’s post on Perine later this week. I’m thinking it will provide more insight w/o exposing the sensitive points. I hope that’s not too vague.

          • TheFuerte says:

That’s good to hear. Sorry, my brain goes to worst case pretty quickly.

          • PLAW0720 says:

Any word on Flowers? I know he is a FB, but after a great spring, haven’t heard anything so far this summer.

          • Super K says:

We haven’t really asked bud. Just assumed he is doing well because of how he looked in the spring.

          • PLAW0720 says:

Thanks, SK. I just get really excited about the FB’s going back to Stanley Wilson and Lydell Carr. I sure hope Flowers can carry on that tradition like JD, Fat Daddy, and Rip. Boomer

    • Travis Coyle says:

Almost all freshman reported first week of June.

  • madman says:

Any new news on kahlil McKenzie? He’s supposed to announce today

    • SoonerPhins says:

It will be Tennessee if he does announce today.

      • madman says:

I thought that would be the case. Well he will get to see how great the vols are when they come to Norman this fall

        • SoonerPhins says:

I think he is a Tennessee Legacy, but don’t hold me to that, so they might have always been the favorite. A good Stomping of Team SEC wouldn’t hurt though lol

    • Jordan Esco says:

Unfortunately, that ship sailed a while ago.

    • Indy_sooner says:

So, so good. Sorry , couldn’t resist. Reminds me of Mixon with those two DBs .
I saw that it’s down to OU and someone else for this cat. Wonder where that puts us now that we have Anderson.,

      • SoonerPhins says:

Looks like its down to OU and Baylor according to 247.

        • Jordan Esco says:

will be interesting to see how much Anderson committing affects OU’s chances here. have heard it might have already played a role in Jamabo cooling some on OU.

          • Kody K. says:

If I was Jamabo I would applaud the Anderson competition. What would seem dissuading is the all the top talent directly in front of him already at OU.

          • SoonerPhins says:

The Price of being an OU running back recruit. OU will always be loaded with RB talent as long as Gundy is there.

          • Kody K. says:

Maybe we can get Gundy to start recruiting linebackers for us too.

          • Tulsa Terry says:

I’ve always wondered if Gundy should have a prominent position in overall recruiting.

    • I like Boomer Sooner says:

Do want. Isn’t he from the same HS as Rex Burkhead?

    • J.K. Abbott says:

Man I love the Soso kid. Great balance for a kid that has such a Dynamic frame. His pic with Coach Stoops is ridicules. Talk about passing the “eye test”.

  • Jordan Esco says:

I think this got mentioned elsewhere, but just in case.

    • SoonerPhins says:

I feel sad some times when I see OU’s name mixed in with 3/4th of those other schools…

  • CcrBoomer says:

Bob Bowlsby hasn’t really showed he has done much for one to just jump on this banding and branding bandwagon. Although not many commissioner’s could do as bad as Dan Beebe the Texas yes man did.
I think i’am going to take the wait and see approach before buy into all this conference hoopla

  • SoonerPhins says:

Quick question, who has gotten more “Buzz”, Alex Ross or Samaje Perine? Who do you think will be the next top contributor after Ford?

    • vargo05 says:

From what I’ve read I’d say Ross seems to be the more likely big contributor, and possibly even moreso than Ford. Seems like he finally “gets it” and is ready to play football for his team.

      • thegoodmagneto(CJ) says:

I believe the Brainiacs had some notes on Mr.Ross a few days ago in Open Post.

      • EasTex says:

Ross will have to be really impressive, he is a full year behind Ford in experience.
        I still feel Tulsa’s #53 pain.

        • SoonerPhins says:

I think #1 ULM is in the same boat

        • Kody K. says:

Good stuff Tex. Ford runs like an angry man! I will be surprised if Ross passes Ford on the depth chart this year.

          • EasTex says:

Ford is a punishing runner. Ross seems to be more of a break away/take it to the zone type of runner. I’ve never seen either of their 40 times.

          • Kody K. says:

wouldn’t it be cool to see all our running back race at the same time. In the 40 and the 100. It wouldn’t prove anything necessarily, but it would be fun to watch.

          • EasTex says:

If they heard you wanted them to run “gassers” they would be very upset. LOL

          • Doobie74OU says:

Yeah I also think it will be hard to pass Ford but if Ross really “gets it” now and he blocks well and he catches the ball out of the backfield he can carve out a nice place for himself in this offense. Everybody keeps saying he has a burst and gear that Ford doesn’t have so it would be great for both to preform up to their potential!

          • EasTex says:

Some fantastic RBs on the roster. I want them all to contribute and succeed.

          • Kody K. says:

I expect a lot of rotation at that position unless someone can prove he is incontestably the man. Yea, Ross has great top end speed, but he needs more space to get it going. Ford is there by the time he hits the line of scrimmage.

        • Doobie74OU says:

Yeah I believe he ran over Jordan Phillips like that before last season during Oklahoma Drills! He knows how to “Bring the Wood!” (pun intended LOL!)

      • AmaGoh7 says:

        Big year for Ross imo.

    • Super K says:

We’ve mentioned Perine is get a lot of praise this summer but in the past couple days I’ve heard some MAJOR praise for Perine that I’ll add to a post later this week or next. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve heard Ross’ name mentioned to the point that there are some who feel he may be the starter at some point this season but again, the staff is gaga over Perine.

      • Jim says:

Part of what I heard yesterday, is that Perine is pushing for starting time already.

      • Kody K. says:

Can’t wait for that post K.

      • DCinAZ says:

I’m not surprised by Perine getting heads on a swivel at all. I don’t envy coach Gundy’s task in finding a role for all these guys. It’s an embarrassment of riches.

  • ToatsMcGoats says:

I was wondering about DeVonte Bond…last I heard he was doing okay. Any news on him?

    • Jordan Esco says:

Still progressing nicely, will def. have a role on that D this year. May start as more of a situational pass-rusher just to get his feet wet at this level, but expect it to develop into more.

    • soonerinks says:

Think he could be a very good pass rusher but man he looked lost in pass coverage in the spring game. Am sure they will be working on that aspect.

  • J.K. Abbott says:

Can you say ACE Set?? One of the hardest formations to adjust too. #personnelgroups #DCheadaches

  • rphdenton says:

….fwiw, after anderson committed, oui stated more than once that that was it for rb’s and gundy is working on ’16……soso had the offer for a long time and didn’t pull the trigger, anderson did

    • SoonerPhins says:

I would be fine with just taking one RB. Either way OU will always be loaded for the RB spot.

    • Zack says:

I think Anderson is better than soso. Soso’s film looks nice but seems like he just tries to get the corner and out run people won’t be as easy in college especially since he got clocked in the 4.6 range I believe at the opening.

      • Boom says:

All HS kids try to hit the corner. I remember the Dallas Cowboys took some RB high in the draft in the early 90’s who ran 4.6 at best. He did OK, some guy named Emmitt.

        • Zack says:

No doubt that’s one reason I’ve though clay would still be able to have a nice nfl career because of what emmitt did. But my point was to be an elite runner they have to be able to do more than just try to get the corner and run.

          • Shifty says:

Following your blockers can’t be overstated

          • Boom says:

Scouting report said, Emmitt had the best vision of any running back he’d seen since Jim Brown. I point is we all get caught up in 40 times and sometimes that isn’t the measure of a great RB

          • Jim says:

LOL, my wife can attest to that. Everytime I see a guard and/or center pulling, I sit there and say to the RB on TV “follow the fat guy. follow the fat guy.”

        • SoonerPhins says:

Emmitt also had one of the best O-Lines in the nation too.

        • Shifty says:

prob ran behind one of the all time great O lines…imagine if Sanders ran behind that line…he had over 200 on the boyz with the shitty line the lions had

      • EasTex says:

Watching Anderson’s video, his patience and trust in his blockers is amazing for such a young man.

      • Kody K. says:

I’m not complaining. Very satisfied with Anderson. If Soso happens to come on board, I’ll be happy with that too. Seems like were almost getting too much of a good thing at one position.(don’t take that the wrong way) I wish we could spill the recruiting success at the running back position over to the linebacker position for more depth. We need a tough inside backer who can hold up to and disrupt an offensive power running game. Maybe a reincarnation of the Boz without the antics.

        • paganpink says:

I would take a reincarnation of the Boz WITH the antics in a heartbeat!

        • Zack says:

I agree I hope this is the year we get the linebackers we definitely have top athletes at all the skill positions. If we took another running back which I would rather take an extra WR, then I hope tyreik gray would be the other back.

  • rphdenton says:

    1) just curious, did ou ever try to pull wickline away from the pukes……..2) between tam, wickline and the other tx schools, bb has his work cut out for him in that area of the country

    • SoonerBold says:

As highly thought of as Wick is, IIRC he only had two OL drafted in his entire time at Okie Lite

      • Jim says:

Regardless of draft results, he took what was considered a major weakness into the top-rated line the conference in one year. Dude is good. Took no-names and succeeded.

  • Chris White says:

Can we all take a minute to appreciate Jay Boulware??

    • soonerinks says:

      I will.

    • Paul Warfield says:

As soon as Boulware reconfigures the punt coverage team we can. Oklahoma putting so many offensive linemen on that unit is what contributed to the poor coverage and return for touchdowns. I know they want bigger players as personal protectors and that Oklahoma was short on tight ends, but your defensive linemen that are over 260 lbs should be in that role because they can still run and cover. As opposed to the offensive linemen who can’t.

    • DCinAZ says:

      Absolutely. And he deserves it.

    • Boom says:

Yes. Jay, go get Josh Moore & Jace Sternberger as a TE’s and all will be better.

    • J.K. Abbott says:

Big Amen too that Chris. Teams that put an emphasis on Specials generally are more successful then not. Especially at the HS level. It starts at the top with the Head Fred too make the time and emphasize What I call Impact Teams. Remember how pitiful OU’s specials were under Blake’s regime? It cost the Sooners games. Impact / Specials are a third of the game and their execution are crucial. I love the fact that Stoops and Co aren’t just giving lip service to them and are offering Scholly’s to specific specials. As fans we take them for granted until they cost us. With limited practice allocations by the Double AA it’s up too the emphasize specials.

  • Jim says:

Admins, I just emailed you the story.

  • Kody K. says:

Anybody think Flowers could add depth at linebacker as well as fullback. I know it’s unlikely, but it seems like he is built for it. Plus he is such a good athlete.

    • Super K says:

Probably could have but he’s all offense and he’s great 🙂

    • DCinAZ says:

Man I dunno. He seems like he’s going to be too much of a weapon on offense. I don’t envy Defensive coordinators in trying to account for all the weapons this offense will have over the next few years.

  • DCinAZ says:

Really like the BIG XII branding initiative. It’s about time!

  • Kody K. says:

Anybody have thoughts on linebacker P.L. Lindley(6’2-262)? I would have thought he would have been the force to contain Henry a little better in the Sugar. I guess I expected him to be more of a presence last year. What should we expect out of him in 2014?

    • Jordan Esco says:

I wouldn’t expect much more than what we saw last year. Limited type of role probably, spot duty for the most part.

      • Kody K. says:

Hoping to hear something more positive, but thank you.

        • Jordan Esco says:

I wouldn’t necessarily take it as a negative as much as there is just a bunch of depth in the front seven right now and he doesn’t really have a specific role. Not quite big enough to play DE and not quite quick enough to play LB out in space, IMO.

  • SoonerPhins says:

Is Mixon not happy at OU? Are his recent twitters something to be concerned about? Is he Home sick? Just basically what I gathered from conversation below and his twitter. He needs to go talk to G. McCoy if he is home sick.

    • Jordan Esco says:

K knows more and can choose to share if he’d like, but yes Mixon is very homesick from what we’ve heard.

      • Zack says:

More to the point where mixon may never play for ou though?

        • Jordan Esco says:

You never really know w/ these Cali kids, IMO.

I don’t think it’s quite to that point yet and if you’ll recall, something very similar happened a couple years back w/ Taylor McNamara and he’s obviously still here. I’d just give it a little time. But at the same time, it could be something to keep an eye on (for now).

          • Zack says:

Hmm well I guess if he’s here at the end of august we can hope this passed. I hope it’s not another lj moore situation. Maybe he’s a bit of a recluse because it seems like the rest of the freshmen are enjoying the summer.

          • Jordan Esco says:

Considering every indication of his personality I feel like we’ve ever had a glimpse of, recluse would have been the last possible word I’d ever have used to describe him. But I agree that things certainly seem off at the moment for whatever reasons.

          • Zack says:

Recluse may be the wrong word but somewhat of a guy who keeps to himself or depends on tight circle of friends.

          • lovethemsooners says:

Wouldn’t have anything to do with the steep competition going on at the RB position would it? We’ve read plenty of reports where folks are raving about Perine. I’m thinking depth chart, playing time, and homesickness are in play here.

          • ToatsMcGoats says:

Perine is definitely killing it, but it’s July. Mixon has more than enough time to turn heads. As versatile as he is, I can’t help but think that he’ll see plenty of playing time in the upcoming season. Anyway, I would have thought that steep competition would have driven him. I guess it’s probably the homesickness that has got him down. Hopefully he’ll get over it and start having a good time.

      • Big Higg says:

Well that sucks…but it’ll probly get better for him when game time approaches

      • Daryl says:

I can totally see him being homesick for sure. BUT if you look back at his tweets from just 5-6 days ago they seem very positive. He welcomed DGB to the team and mentions getting a “natty”. He loves the new uni’s, apparently Trevor played a prank and he thought it was funny. There seems to be a lot more positive than the last 2 tweets.

        • Kody K. says:

what was his last 2 tweets?

          • Zack says:

            Here’s a link I can’t screen capture it. https://mobile.twitter.com/Joe_MainMixon

          • Sooner Ray says:

See if you read through all his tweets, His birthday coming, he’s not with his friends and family, and he’s been going through a brutal summer workout where he isn’t the big dog on campus, It’s all hitting him pretty hard.

          • EasTex says:

The fact he is 17yoa has to be considered. If he can hang in until the fall semester starts and the campus comes alive I think he will see things differently.

          • Sooner Ray says:

Yeah Tex, he hasn’t even experienced the college life yet. People have been reaching out to him all evening and his spirit seems to be on the upswing for now.

          • EasTex says:

I didn’t leave home for good until I was 19 and it was tough. I can’t imagine what I would have been like if I was on my own for the first time at 17.
That first week of fall classes he will meet so many nice young people and make new friends(some for life), his mood will change dramatically.

          • Kody K. says:

            Thanks Zach.

  • Jordan Esco says:

re: that video I just posted. Unsurprisingly, I thought Iman Marshall looked every bit the part of one of the top CBs in the country. Wish OU could get a player like that (and I wish even more that I didn’t have to wish OU could get a player like that, smh).

    • Kody K. says:

Love that last sentence in your post. Says a lot about our recruiting. Not being negative, I just feel OU has earned the position to have blue chippers knockin down our door just like Bama does.

      • Jordan Esco says:

Should be the case, but as we are all painfully aware it clearly isn’t. And, yes, it can be depressing at times (at least for this guy anyway).

        • Kody K. says:

I’ll drink to that. I just don’t understand it. We are at the top of so many categories: Best university town & stadium, players in NFL, championships, winning percentage, tradition and I could go on all day. We should pretty much be picking up any player we want. I mean we should be a lock for having the top five recruiting class every year. AND I’M SOOO TIRED OF HEARING THE ACRONYM SEC!!!! I just don’t get it.

          • Kody K. says:

It’s kind of insulting that we have accomplished so much in college football (past and present) and schools like A&M swoops in and out recruits us.

          • Boom says:

Are they really out recruiting us? They are out “staring” us but let’s find out if they are real athletes that fit a system. Let’s see how these 5*’s do.

          • Kody K. says:

I not talking about stars, I’m considering simple math. Looking at the 12 committed players that had offers from both TAMU and OU, 9 of them chose A&M and only 3 has picked OU so far.– 75% have chosen the Aggies and 25% the Sooners in a one on one comparison. If you want to add stars into the equation it gets worse. Of course, It’s early in the process and much will change. But, that is where it stands right now.
            GO SOONERS!

          • Boom says:

Great, we will see how their year turns out. UT used to get a lot of ours too and they can’t even get anyone drafted.

          • Kody K. says:

very true and point well taken.

          • DCinAZ says:

That’s 9 players that will either be kicked off the team or regretting their decision at this time next year.

          • ToatsMcGoats says:

It may be because I’m an OU fan, but it seems to me that there is much more hate for Bob Stoops and OU than a lot of other schools. The only thing that I can chalk it up to is the fact that OU wins. Period. Nobody hates a loser (e.g. Kansas, Iowa State). You’ll never hear someone say “Geeze, Kansas ALWAYS beats us. I HATE those guys. Can’t they let someone else win every once in awhile?” (unless it’s basketball, of course). I have, however, heard these words from a Mizzou fan about Bob Stoops and OU.

          • Kody K. says:

Some real good thoughts in your post. I love Bob Stoops and was panicking when there was a rumor that he was heading to the Browns. But I do think he comes off arrogantly and defensive with the media at times.—a better than everybody else attitude. He does not seem friendly and relaxed like Jimbo Fisher. I am convinced he could do without this part of the job. I’m not sure if this hurts public relations with the media or not. I’m just saying he is a much better head coach than a liaison to the Associated Press.

          • EasTex says:

The press hasn’t been very pleasant with him either.
He will take up for himself and his team…and I like that.

          • Kody K. says:

Poignant clip Tex. Bob sure can be intimidating. Hate to be the one to ask him a stupid question in front of cameras.

          • EasTex says:

Bob doesn’t seem to care for stupid very much.
He is very different when the press isn’t trying to question his or his teams ability.

          • CcrBoomer says:

He has changed a bit at his time at OU. I think he does well with the national media. But Bob has always been very short with the local media. I get the feeling there is a few he would rather not even talk to lol

          • Kody K. says:

Excellent observation. I never even thought to make that distinction between local/national in that regard.

          • paganpink says:

I just think that it’s a combination of really really dumb questions they ask them oftentimes, and a little world weariness of being asked that SAME dumb question for the 5th time in the same press conference. I know it’s all part of the game and all that but I think Bob just doesn’t suffer fools gladly, and it is very evident when they start into the asking the same thing again and again he just wants to be anywhere but there! Many of those guys are just lazy about doing their jobs and their homework for interviewing the coaches. Unlike our guys here at TFB!

        • leatherneck1061 says:

If we were to finally get #8 this season, and then OU completes the renovations they’ve outlined, we could see a real transformation of our fortunes on the recruiting trail.

    • Zack says:

Xavier Lewis and Darius slayton stood out to me the most. Lewis I guess committed to lsu yesterday he looked better than tolliver in that drill…Sunderland though? I may have found somebody I like less than jamile Johnson.

      • Kody K. says:

Here we go picking on JJ again! LOL just playing with you. If he becomes a star at OU I’m going to remind you about it all the time though.

        • Zack says:

Haha I would be glad to eat crow if JJ turns out to be a stud. But after I posted about JJ the other day I went and watched sunderlands film it was ok but then the numbers he posted a 30 inch vert for a guy that looks that athletic? Only one other DB and a couple WR were worse the others he was higher than were linemen. His 40 and shuttle not bad though.

          • Kody K. says:

I know you would be grateful to eat the crow, because you are a true Sooner. But be forewarned, I won’t forget to feed it to you. LOL

          • Zack says:

But speaking of safeties I’m confused why Justin Reid doesn’t have an offer from every school I saw 9 offers on 247. His brother was pretty good and he looks smaller but good film.

          • Super K says:

Because coach Mike hitched wagon to Sunderland all the way. I don’t agree with the move but it is what it is.

          • Zack says:

I guess mike thinks he can coach the heart into Sunderland. He looks like a solid player very gabe Lynn or nic harris like. He looks the part but IMO he’s always going to leave fans wanting more.

          • Kody K. says:

yes…yes….good post. Looked like he didn’t even want to participate in the drills. Didn’t look like he was there 2 repruhzent.

          • Zack says:

His film is like that too. He’s a solid tackler but for a safety you want to see him meet the ball at the receiver and he doesn’t do that often enough IMO.

          • Paul Warfield says:

Based off what? A few reps where they have him in off coverage? He was dominant at the camp in Dallas against top quality division 1 talent.

          • Super K says:

No that’s an opinion I’ve held for a while. The opinion I offered wasn’t based on the two reps. In RE the Dallas camp, I had a couple friends who are DB coaches in Dallas at both camps (NFTC and Rivals) and they are not high on him. The word I got from the NFTC camp is that they initially paired him with some poor competition and he did well and then once they merged the kids and he competed against better talent he didn’t do well. But really, the camps don’t play much into my opinion. I’ve never seen it on film.

          • Kody K. says:

I’ll have to look into this one. Thanks for the heads up.

          • CcrBoomer says:

            http://247sports.com/Player/Justin-Reid-42248
247 has him 50% OU and 50% LSU
4.7 gpa offers from Northwestern, Harvard,Princeton sweet!

          • Zack says:

That literally changed today haha. There were 2 votes today on crystal ball for ou so I wonder if mike visited him recently. Earlier it was 80 lsu 20 tcu.

          • CcrBoomer says:

Must be an offer from OU headed his way is my guess? I really like this if its the case. I wonder if something is up with one of the other 2 safeties if so?

          • Zack says:

Well I think Reid may blow up soon especially just because of who his brother is and the fact that it looks like lsu isn’t going hard after him. I believe haughton is still a guy we need. My top targets would be mckinley, haughton, Reid then Johnson and then Sunderland.

      • Super K says:

Lewis is an extremely polished CB. Knock on him is his speed but if you ever talk to coaches or scouts they almost always complain about a CBs speed. You can never be fast enough haha

  • Travis Coyle says:

Mbanasor stayed with his guy the whole time. I’m so happy we got him!

    • Super K says:

We haven’t pulled a complete CB like Mbanasor in a while. Good get by the staff! Great vid. Really some talented guys overall.

      • Boom says:

Sunderland, did he not have a good day or was it that he is a safety working as a CB.

        • Super K says:

Those 1 on 1 reps are tough for anyone so I wouldn’t read too much into them.

      • Kody K. says:

Yea, Colvin wasn’t as polished coming from high school. If he progresses at the same rate as Colvin did at OU………look OUt!

  • Stephen says:

Are we still in the chase for Malik Jefferson? That guy more speed and size than Striker. Ran 4.39 40yd dash at The Opening!

  • Chris White says:

I really want Iman Marshall. Definitely the most impressive in that video

    • Super K says:

Surprising to see someone that big move as well as he does. But he really knows how to use his size to redirect and knows how to leave his man and play the route.

      • Kody K. says:

Iman plays so relaxed and effortlessly. I boxed for years when I was younger and when I learned to really relax in the ring is when I started to become a complete fighter.–especially defensively–slipping and countering.

      • Doobie74OU says:

Really interested to see if Julian Wilson does become the starter and really shine at CB will it make an impression on some of these bigger CB. At 6’2″ 201 if he has a good couple years playing CB he will NFL scouts all over him! If they have the speed I just love larger CBs

    • Zack says:

Marvell tell looked pretty good. That double move deddrick Thomas put on Iman Marshall was nioce.

  • Zack says:

    http://www.varsitypreps.com/max-wariboko-cb-co-2016/

I thought I would share this link. It’s a spotlight on Max wariboko the writer had max as the top corner in oklahoma for 2016 class. Great last sentence speaking to him needing to get bigger to become a better prospect.

    • rphdenton says:

….actually, I find it sad that the offers he has, perhaps with the exception of Tulsa, are due to who his brother is and the pkg deal……..if, for some reason, they go separate ways then we’ll see what the genuine interest is

    • Kody K. says:

Zack- I had an amusing thought after reading that article. What if we lose Josh this year because we refuse his demand to offer his little brother. Then, next year Mike falls in love with Max and recruits him hard, but he loses him as well because he wants to follow his big brother. Then, years later both Wariboko brothers from Oklahoma become All Americans at, let’s say, UCLA. Wouldn’t that be a beotch? By the way, I hope we still land Josh. It erks me when we lose our in state kids.

      • Zack says:

That would suck but if they end up at ucla they can kiss their dreams of all Americans goodbye. I don’t want to dog too much on ucla and I really don’t know much about their football tradition. But I’ve heard about their early 2000s teams being very doughie and I’m sure mora would improve the conditioning but mora doesn’t exactly have the best track record so I could see them falling off after a few more average seasons.

I hope we land josh. He and Barnett would be big time together at 6’4 and 340 each. And really I hope Max improves enough to be a guy that ou would want after his junior season.

    • Super K says:

Love that site and the owners! Great guys and great football guys. But disagree with this particular writer in this instance.

      • Zack says:

I strolled onto that site today for the first time because Warren I think(?) did a prediction for 247 for Justin Reid and has him going to ou.

  • SECsooner says:

Our DB recruits didn’t look so hot on those clips. They’re gonna need some coaching.

  • Zack says:

FYI Sunderland Gibson and newsome should be on espnu 7 on 7 right now. All are on alpha pro team

Iman Marshall looks legite….! Hope we end up with him at OU

    • Zack says:

I don’t think we have a good shot at him but he did want ou to offer him so maybe we manage to get an official out of him. If so then you never know but we need mixon to pick his head up and show up for Cali this year.

    • Kody K. says:

This will be a tough get. I will officially throw a big party if we land this one. I’m making an early NFL draft prediction for Marshall. Sadly, I don’t think this kid gets out of Cali for college ball. I would trade Mixon for him if was fantasy football or even a real deal trade because we need top corners more than we need top running backs right now.

        • Zack says:

          Lol

          Edit….still lol.

        • Kody K. says:

Funny. I’ll give you that one.

          • CcrBoomer says:

I really hope my Sooners struck gold with Mixon,Quick,Samaja, and Flowers. I got into a pretty heated discussion on another board with some sec fans that claimed that there wasn’t another team in the country that had stock piled more talent at RB then Georgia and Bama had. I honestly despise that whole conference

          • Kody K. says:

For sure! I’ve had my entire fill of all the SEC propaganda. I’m also disappointed in ESPN. Don’t get me wrong, they are a great conference. But, they are not the only ones who can play football. SEC # ditch the almighty complex.

So I ran into this article, and I was curious as to what your(JY, K or Jordan or any Brainiac) response would be.

    http://collegesportsblog.dallasnews.com/2014/07/oklahoma-projected-starters-sooners-easily-have-deepest-defensive-line-in-the-big-12.html/

Interesting part to me was predicting Ndulue as the starter over Phillips.

Although he did have some quotes which really made me think he doesn’t know that much about OU, i.e. when speaking about Tapper- “His athleticism isn’t where it needs to be.”

    • EasTex says:

The guy started off the piece by saying OU forced 5 turnovers. It was 4.
      Then the Tapper comment.
      /sheesh

    • Jordan Esco says:

      Trust your instincts.

The idiocy of the Tapper comment aside, he isn’t going to get more athletic. Your athleticism pretty much is what it is.

Also, Grissom didn’t have nine sacks last year. He did have nine TFL, but only had 4.5 sacks.

Additionally, as you’ve pointed out, there is no way in hell Ndulue starts at NG. If (and I stress if) Phillips wasn’t ready to go, then Wade would be the guy. Ndulue will rotate in some, mainly on passing downs, but he won’t be the starter.

      • Eric Hoffpauir says:

Yeah. If Ndulue starts at NG in our base defense, it means that our DL has run through a scary string of injuries. Do not want.

      • I like Boomer Sooner says:

Thank you! I hadn’t really considered anyone other than Phillips and I wanted to see if I was crazy for not really considering anyone else, and since I consider you guys the #2 experts for prediction of starters (#1 is the staff but they never want to share), I asked.

        Keep up the good work!

        • Jordan Esco says:

You’re not crazy at all. This person just clearly doesn’t know what they’re talking about.

  • SoonerGray says:

Ummm….how has no one mentioned Christian Kirk? He and Iman def stood out the most to me without a doubt. Well, Alize Jones certainly looks the part, as well.
